According to medical journalist Diana Korte, vaginal births after cesarean, or VBACs (pronounced vee-backs), are occurring at a rate six times greater in the 1990s than they were in the previous decade, and with more support from those in the medical profession. This is good news for the many pregnant women who want a vaginal delivery after previously delivering babies by cesarean section. Also good news is The VBAC Companion, a clearly written and thorough guide to lead women step-by-step through the process of planning for a VBAC.

Korte, author of Every Woman's Body, gives firm reasons for VBACs--they are safer for both mother and baby--and backs them up with medical facts. Strong chapters on overcoming fear, planning your VBAC, finding VBAC-friendly doctors and hospitals, and experiencing a VBAC make this book invaluable. The appendices provide fascinating statistics about infant mortality rates and cesarean and VBAC rates around the world, as well as extensive listings of resources.

        Book Description

Essential advice and information for any pregnant woman who has previously delivered by Cesarean.

        5 out of 5 stars I had a successful VBAC b/c of this book..........2007-08-08

This book helped me once I switched doctors and decided to pursue a VBAC. It gave me all the questions to ask my new doctor about VBAC and it educated me on the risks versus what the REAL risks were. And beleive me, the good outweighs the bad when it comes to pursuing VBAC. I had a successful VBAC in May 2007 so I know what I am talking about. READ THIS BOOK!!

        5 out of 5 stars A great guide to a successful VBAC!.......2007-06-16

I bought this book to learn what is involved in attempting a VBAC and help me make the decision of whether or not to try for one. This book was very helpful in giving me background information about VBACs (which my orginal doctor didn't provide because our local hospital no longer supports VBACs) and insights into the safest way to attempt a VBAC. This book gave me the information and confidence that I needed to search out another doctor who did support VBACs. It helped me outline my questions for that doctor and their hospital to determine if it was worth it for me to try for a VBAC. If I hadn't read this book I wouldn't have known what questions to ask, and therefore not felt as confident in my ability to make this decision. I decided to go for the VBAC even though it meant driving an hour and half to a hospital and doctor who would support my decision, and I am so glad I did. I was successful and my recovery was so much easier and faster than after a C-section. I only wish the book was more up to date in its discussion of the current medical attitude toward VBACs. When it was written VBAC were on the uprise, but sadly now the trend is for many hospitals to not allow VBACs. I would have liked more current information and strategies in finding a doctor and hospital who will support a VBAC.

3 out of 5 stars Great book, but in need of an update!.......2006-05-09

This *was* a great book if you're looking for support and resources to have a VBAC. Unfortunately, with a copyright of 1997, this book is now out of date. In the last decade, new studies have been done and new recommendations have been made by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. As a result, attempted VBAC rates have plummeted and VBAC friendly hospitals and doctors are harder to find--which is no longer in sync with the book's rosy predictions that VBAC will become more popular. Another problem with the book is that many of the sucess stories sing the praises of pitocin and cervical gel to induce and augment labor. We now know through published clinical studies that these interventions greatly increase the risk of uterine rupture.

Addressing some of the earlier negative reviews, this book is not designed to help a woman decide between a VBAC and a repeat cesarean. It's a resource for the woman who's already decided on a VBAC so she can achieve her goals. Secondly, I'm sorry if some of the reviewers don't like what the book says about pain medication in labor or midwives vs. doctors, but it's all true. The average c-section rate at many hospitals is around 30%, while the average transfer rate from midwife-staffed birth centers (because they can't do cesareans) is around 10%. Epidurals restrict a woman's movement and slow labor, both of which can lead to "failure to progress". Can you have a VBAC with an epidural and an OB? Yes, but you can *statistically* increase your chances for sucess by following the book's advice.

If this book is revised/updated this year, I'm sure it will be a five-star book!

1 out of 5 stars The Author's Personal Bias is Loud and Clear.......2005-08-24

This book was a waste of good money. While it did provide a number of facts supporting VBAC - it also implied that midwives were to be trusted over doctors, that birthing centers and home births were preferable to what was labeled dispargingly as "a high tech birth" (ie: a hospital setting.) Women are encouraged to labor naturally and are threatened that if they give in to the nefarious epidural that they will have their labor stall and will find themselves undergoing a second c-section. Should you attempt a VBAC and end up in c-section anyway - the book informs you that your child will be at risk for a lengthy stay in NICU due to breathing problems. Diana Korte is a medical journalist - not a physician. She should be more objective in her coverage, but any arguement in favor of a second c-section is glossed over and the implication is that doctos want the higher fees of a c-section and that women who choose a follow up c-section are being self indulgent or are somehow too emotionally inhibited to labor naturally. My first labor ended after a grueling and excruciating labor in an emergency c-section. Had we not gone to c-section my baby would have died. I'm not anxious to have a second c-section and I find that contrary to the suggestion by Korte that if I undergo a second c-section that I shouldn't consider myself a failure, that her book's message is exactly the opposite. For Korte the only safe and joyful birth is a epidural-free, intervention-free, duola and midwife assisted, doctor-free birth.

        1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2005-08-04

I was very disappointed after I read this book. I was hoping for an unbiased view of both sides of the issue and instead found myself getting more and more upset as I read. All of the benefits of vbac were put out in great detail while any negatives were simply glossed over as "rare risks" and not spelled out in any sort of detail. 95% of the stories were from people who successfully vbac'd saying things like how they felt so much better about themselves, etc. It really gave me the impression that if you don't at least try you are a failure and are not doing what is best for your baby. I was also very upset about the statistics in the back. There wasn't a key to determine what the numbers meant and what was being compared. I had to deduce a lot making me really unsure of what I was reading and it just gave me no confidence in the material. I definately wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who was trying to make up their mind what is best for them. If someone has already decided to vbac then this book would be good because it would make them feel like there isn't much to worry about at all and if you didn't do it you were crazy.

3 out of 5 stars Nuclear ladies delight.......2005-11-13

The housewife in the atomic days of the Fifties was the ideal person for manufactures to sell their products to and what better place than her kitchen, didn't every home need new appliances, furniture, color schemes, lighting and especially gadgets to make everything so effortless, well, that was the promise. The two hundred plus colorful pictures in this book provide a backward (though essentially superficial) glance at what was on offer.

Unfortunately this book is a sequel to the publisher's previous title 'Atomic Home' (ISBN 1888054891) and like that book it has the same faults, short blocks of copy that don't relate to the photos on the same page, none of the images are dated (would it really take too much effort to say that the painting on page thirteen is a Saturday Evening Post cover for September twelve, 1959?) pictures overlap each other, colored backgrounds and shapes (with a different color on each spread, too) frequently get as much space as the illustrative material.

Of the three chapters the one devoted to Gadgets and Accessories is the most intriguing, thousands of small companies across the Nation must have churned out handy gadgets and rather uniquely they all seemed to be sold in dreadfully designed packaging. Just how often would the spaghetti fork (page 154) with a small handle at one end to rotate the tines, be used, most likely never? How about an automatic butter curler...no home should be without one! There are lots of ads showing these dubious products and some incredibly flat still-life photos as well.

Atomic Kitchen is a colorful look back to that suburban palace but for a more organised view check out 'Inspiring 1950s Interiors' (ISBN 0764304585) admittedly its excellent colored photos cover the whole house but there are fifty-two kitchen sets to be seen. Gadgets get a good showing in Michael Goldberg's 'Groovy Kitchen Designs for Collectors' (ISBN 0764300105) with three hundred photos of appliances and gadgets and some actually look like they could be useful.

5 out of 5 stars THE SPACE AGE KITCHEN OF YESTERYEAR!.......2005-07-26

Odd the way style is...the once considered tacky and gaudy kitchen designs of the 1950's are now hot among collectors and homeowners today as everyone is going retro. Walk into a Target store and see how they've adopted to the look of the 1950's with their brightly colored new appliances and gadgets. I guess after years of having everything being so uniform and style not mattering, people are again looking to spice up their homes with color. "Atomic Kitchen" is a great source of reference for people looking to capture that retro look, or just take a glimpse back in time some 50's years ago to see what homemakers of the time had available to them.

The book begins with an introduction to...the kitchen and points out how the kitchen came to replace the family hearth as the central gathering place for friends and family. As new, smaller homes were built in the 1950s, the dining room was often replaced with a larger kitchen in order to serve both functions of preparing food and eating it. Thus it became important for homemakers to be able to express their style but also have great functionality as well. For the first time, appliances not only had to work good, but they had to look good as well. Color was the order of the day. Not only with small appliances but large appliances as well. Consumers had an entire rainbow of colors to choose from, from bright reds and yellows to soft blues and pinks, and everything could be color coordinated.

Atomic Kitchen provides hundreds of vintage advertising that display the latest and greatest in new items for the home...all designed to be better and make your life easier. The 50's saw an explosion in new gadgets for the home. You had to have a handy new gadget to do everything from opening cans and jars to crushing ice, to making waffles. If there was a task that needed to be done, some manufacturer was going to come up with a new, electric way of getting it done automatically. Rival had an entire line of such items like the Juice-o-mat, Slice-o-mat, grind-o-mat, ice-o-mat, and who knows how many more. One could buy knife sharpeners, potato chip makers, sandwich toasters, ravioli makers...no mundane task was ignored it seems. But even with all these new appliances, they were still heavy-duty, often made of stainless steel and built to last years...unlike the almost disposable appliances we have to contend with today.

It's such a treat just to browse through this book and see the many wonderful items, many long-forgotten, that were in use fifty years ago. These ads give us a glimpse into an era when these new appliances must have been looked at as life-savers for people's kitchens. Just a fantastic book!

            5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one!.......2004-12-16

Wow! What a fun and interesting book. It brought back many delightful memories as I was a young girl in the 1950s with a Mother that absolutely loved to cook. I was especially tickled to see the "sandwich toaster". Mother used to make all types of delicious sandwiches using that gadget! If you enjoy collectibles, you won't want to miss this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book. Highly recommend........2004-12-14

Like the author, I too am a collector of kitchen gadgets. I collect gadgets from all time periods so I was intrigued by the Atomic Kitchen and its focus on the period following World War 2 and up through the 50's. The photos are clear and crisp. Many from popular magazines I recall seeing at my folks. I found the book to be informative and insightful. While I am a collector, I would recommend this book to any one with an interest in kitchens and collectibles.

4 out of 5 stars Trip Thru Time.......2004-12-14

Must admit, I have no clue as to how the other reviewer could not enjoy this trip thru time. It reminded me so much of my childhood and the things my mom had in her kitchen. I could almost smell the cookies from the oven. The author really did a great job!! I have already purchased a few other copies as it is going to make a great Christmas gift for my sisters Doris and Shirley.

Her teacher, Miss Marigold, has assigned everyone in the class to bring a snack for "Healthy Snacks Day." There are no special qualifications, other than that it it has to be healthy. Blue's friends all seem to know exactly what to bring, but Blue isn't so sure.

Blue thinks about the problem and gets help from Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper. Together, they work together to create a wonderful healthy snack. Blue also learns a little something about trying new foods.

This is book #22 in the "Blue's Clues" series. It features an illustrated version of Joe, unlike some of the books which contain photographs of Donovan Patton as him. This book is pretty fun. You get to see Joe and Blue in chef's hats and it teaches a number of things related to healthy eating and cooking, as well as problem-solving.

5 out of 5 stars The true food of all good Democrats.......2006-09-26

Any book about hot dogs which ignores jalapeno peppers, ketchup, mayonaise and the Democrats has missed the essentially American flavour of this food.

Maybe Graulich is a Republican and doesn't know better. They're used to eating pointy little sandwiches with the crusts cut off and stuffed with unmentionable fillings, while daintily sipping tiny cups of tea flavoured lightly with lemon. Good Democrats chow down on franks with beans washed down with keg beer; to go upscale they put their dogs in a bun, dress them with local flavours ranging from peanut butter to mayonnaise, chopped onions and jalapenos and quaff beer from a bottle.

In short, hot dogs are pure Americana. They should be served in as many ways, as many places, as many flavours and to as many Americans as possible. When Tommy Jeff wrote about "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness . . ." it is safe to assume, had hot dogs existed then, he would have understood the meaning of happiness. Graulich wants to prove dogs deserve culinary status, which is like entering Hagar the Horrible in a Miss America pageant. It's a quirky challenge, and he does it with elegance, style and good taste. But really, do hot dogs have "good taste" or do they just have to taste good?

Personally, I'd prefer some recipes; let's say for Chicago, New York and Mexican hot dogs. But, that may merely show I'm a cretin. Let's be honest, a hot dog is not an effete French (or Italian, or Portuguese or whatever) dish that must be prepared by an effete chef to the effete taste of a effete snob and served in an efficacious artistic display. Instead, like pizzas, hamburgers and baking powder biscuits with cowboy coffee, the hot dog is pure American inventiveness that gives everyone a taste exactly to their liking. Kinda like voting.

Graulich succeeds admirably. The book is done with taste, style and beauty; the work of a true connoisseur. Can anyone expect more of a hot dog, or a book about hot dogs? It's so good even effete snobs may be encouraged to nibble. Fortunately, for the sake of Republicans, he even includes instructions on how to eat a hot dog.

            BUT . . . . . . . I still think someone needs to talk to him about jalapenos.

3 out of 5 stars pinks doesnt deserve to be on any list .......2005-02-09

pinks is THE most overrated place on earth. I drove 2 hours for that? bland hard skinned hot dogs with cheap wanna be chili on it. a 7/11 big bite is better. dont waste your time. read this book its honest.

            3 out of 5 stars Overlooked Pinks?.......2000-01-09

Overall Mr. Graulich didn't do a bad job putting together a fairly informative book about one of my favorite foods.

On the other hand, when he listed the hot dog stand locations, he included the Purple Turtle in Utah (I live only a few minutes from the Turtle and it is only a marginal dog) but failed to mention Pink's in Los Angeles.

You don't think about Saturn without rings, you don't think about Abbott without Costello. You don't talk about Bill without Monica. You don't discuss hamburgers without MacDonalds (Although I didn't read Graulich's book, 'The Hamburger Companion' maybe he did.) You don't write about the American Civil War and leave out Lee or Grant or Lincoln.

How in the world could a man write about hot dogs and not include Pink's in Los Angeles. They recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. Same spot, same great dogs. My grandfather ate there, my dad ate there, I eat there. They used to be open 24 hrs. And no matter what time of the day or night you went there was almost always a line. Their hours have changed slightly, but there's still always a line.

Shame on you Mr Graulich, I am having a hard time to resist the urge to use the pages of your book to line the bottom my bird cage.

You don't think of Lucy without Ethel, or Fred without Ginger, or Disney without Mickey . . .Hot dogs without Pink's? Never.

It's a perfect coffee table--make that picnic table--volume for food lovers of all stripes. It's hard not to smile reading this beautiful little book.

It features the work of eight artists, each with their own special way with dogs, and Karen Dowell's text covers territory sure to be entertaining and familiar to any dog person. A must for anyone who's ever had a dog underfoot in the kitchen, the bedroom, or the office.

5 out of 5 stars A beautifully written book - great for any dog lover........1999-01-10

Mrs. Dowell has written a series of vignettes describing the unseen bond between owner and dog. The stories are touching, humorous and always thought-provoking. I will never look at my dogs in the same light.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift book for the dogpersons on your Howliday list........1998-10-12

If I were wealthy, I'd buy every dogperson a copy of this book, but I'm not, so I'm doing the next best thing - telling you about it.

I received the book, "Cooking with Dogs" in the mail today and had to stop everything I was doing to sit down and read it. What a joy!! Author Karen Dowell, a member of TALK ABOUT DOGS List, has written vignettes about what it's like to live with dogs. Several artists have contributed their interpretation of her words. Pure poetry . . . and not ONE recipe, either!!

I highly recommend this book, for yourself and for the dogpersons on your holiday list - any holiday. Or "just because", since we dogfolks love to read about our favorite subject.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant, whimsical, loving view of dogs and their humans.......1998-08-26

We love our dogs, incorporate them into our family and, gradually, take them for granted.

With "Cooking with Dogs", the droll Dowell reminds us why we love our dogs and helps us understand what makes them tick, although not what ticks make of them.

Buy it. Read it. Smile a lot.

When I first recieved My cook book I thought it was a gag ! The book was funny with its comics and I like dogs. Being a self proclaimed gourmet I never use anyone recipes. Needless to say it sat around for a while then one evening I had quick need for Alfredo sauce my sauce is complex and the fridge was incomplete. I resorted to the the Dr dog recipe it was simple (half the calories of my Alfredo) and quite tasty. Once my resistance to cooking somone elses recipes was worn down and I next prepared Filet Steaks with Mushrooms and Maderia sauce. It was perfect on the first attemp and now I really think I am a gourmet. I recommend Cooking with Dr Dog to Gourmets, wannabe Gormets and anyone who wants to cook great food at home.

His philosophy about learning to make about 10 THINGS YOU ALREADY LOVE TO EAT, more if you like to cook, in a very low fat way took away all the bad about dieting. It's not just Grandma who loves knitting nowadays. Young urban professionals and Hollywood celebrities are turning a centuries-old pastime into a hip, stress-relieving hobby. No one knows this better than Lily M. Chin, named "Master Knitter" by Vogue Knitting and cited in major media for her chic designs. In this book she profiles the most inventive, diverse, and inspiring young knitters in the country who are giving the craft a fresh new look.

I received this book as a gift and am only too glad that I can return it for a differnt title. Out of the 20 designs in this books, all but a few accesories are dated and boring. If nothing else make sure you take a look at a copy of this book before you buy it.

                    2 out of 5 stars A bit dissappointing.......2006-03-17

I was a little disappointed. I thought there would be more designs from the author, but instead most of the patterns are from individuals around the country. There are 2 patterns in the book of any interest to me, and I still haven't made them and probably will not. Better to save your money and view individual's work on knitting blogs.

                    2 out of 5 stars Underwhelming.......2006-03-12

I bought this book for $3.99 at a closeout discount store. I'm glad I didn't pay more than that. Lily Chin is a "genius knitter" in my opinion. So why didn't her editor do a better job making a visually pleasing book? The pages are flat cardstock, and there are no pictures of the projects modeled by people. In addition, Lily's egotism really becomes apparent as one reads the text, which is not appealing to the average reader.

                    3 out of 5 stars The Youthful First-time Knitter.......2005-09-29

Although Lily's title is catchier, mine is more descriptive. I'm an experienced knitter who lives in a big city. The writing style is great, pure Lily, but the projects were too basic for me. I returned it.

4 out of 5 stars Unique...takes you inside the mind of a master designer.......2005-02-25

I like this book, it is akin to the adage "teach a person to fish instead of giving them a fish". Each pattern is prefaced by a few pages that go through how the design came about and all the myriad decisions along the way and the tips & details that make it a successful project, from fitting to finishing. The patterns may not be everyone's cup of tea (though I did like at least 4 of them to make, well worth the purchase price) but the thought processes are invaluable especially to the beginning knitter who needs to get into the mindset of tweaking patterns. I can think of only one instance which would have been a nice touch: photos of the knitters wearing their completed projects! But other than that, this is a knitting book that dares to be different in format and aim, and that rates a big plus for me.

You Make the Difference is designed for parents of all young children, especially those who are at-risk for developing a language delay. The principles of the Hanen "3a way" approach - allow, adapt, add -- are captured in this condensed, user-friendly book. The simple language, colorful illustrations and humorous cartoons help parents learn how to connect with their children in ways that foster the child's self-esteem and learning. The style of the book makes it especially useful for parents with low literacy skills and those who have other first languages.

                            Includes the following:

                            - colorful illustrations that reflect multiculturalism in America
                            - recipes for play dough and play clay
                            - game suggestions
                            - adding new words and experiences through music and books

                                Book Description

Painting was a vital source of inspiration for Australia's beloved novelist. This essential biography traces the influence of 20th-century Australian artists and European Modernist and Romantic artists, in his life and work. Based on entirely new research, this is the first study to make a strong connection between White's work and the visual arts. Also discussed are issues that White was deeply interested and involved in, such as the development of an open and diverse Australian culture; the importance of Aboriginal culture and feeling for the land; nuclear disarmament; the Green Bans; an Australian republic; antimaterialism; and spirituality and its creative expression.

Josh never conceived that Tony would end up in an arranged marriage and devoting his life to the Torah in a closed, cloistered world in which outsiders were not welcome. As Josh follows his brothers metamorphic path he grows to better understand his brother, as well as the most frightening and exotic territory for a foreign correspondent: his own family (Dani Shapiro).

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and sometimes moving story of two brothers.......2002-05-17

Like most books written about a family member, this book in the end is at least as much about the author than his brother. While discovering his estranged brother's newly religious life, the author inadvertently (advertently?) really tells you a bunch about himself. And he does not come across as a particularly nice guy, at least as a younger man. As someone else mentions, the first half the book is inferior to the second, full of his whining.
Another intersting facet is how rarely the authors of such books relfect on their own lives. The author's father comes across as rigid and intolerant (typical of those on the left who preach tolerance for everything but are intolerant for those who disagree with them), a sometimes financial and marital failure. The author comes across at times as selfish and self-absorbed, lacking any roots of his own. Only the mother seems to be a decent person where her children are involved. In the end, who has the better life - Tuvia or Joshua or Joshua's father?

4 out of 5 stars His brother's Journey to Hasidic Judaism.......2001-12-07

Hammer's book felt like a letter to a friend, describing in detail his cross section of feelings toward his brother's dramatic changes into the extreme world of Hasidic Judaism. Hammer's emotions change throughout the book - confusion, anger, amazement, and to a lesser degree, understanding. The distance between the brothers also seemed due to the religious brother's poor social skills and identity that had nothing to do with religious observant. Although this wasn't a "wow" book, it was a very touching story.

4 out of 5 stars No condemnation -- just honesty.......2001-06-19

Having walked at least part of Hammer's brother's journey into Orthodox Judaism, I wasn't sure what to expect from "Chosen by God," but was braced for scathing "objective" journalistic condemnation of the religious and particularly Chassidic lifestyle. Surprisingly, though, there was none of that here. Instead, this book tells the heartfelt story of Hammer's quest to understand not only his brother but his own Jewish spiritual leanings.

There are no cheap epiphanies in this book: Hammer doesn't come away a "convert", and neither can he bring his brother Tuvia back from the edge of extremism where even his wife Ahuvah feels he may get hurt. Rather, they find common ground: with hard work and compromise on both sides, they manage to cultivate a vocabulary that bridges their two very different worlds.

Neither brother, it becomes clear through Hammer's sensitive narrative, is "right" -- but they manage to speak to each other with love and come to respect each other's journeys.

A book like this will certainly have many fans among those who seek to denigrate "ultra-Orthodox" Judaism -- it is scathingly honest about the poverty and even criminal activity of a few of its adherents. But if that's all you're looking for, you will hate this book for its honest, truthful portrayal of the beauty and excitement of traditional Jewish spirituality.

Though Hammer initially suspected he'd lost his brother to a cult, he comes away from his journey accepting that this IS who his brother was all along: an extremist, perhaps, but one for whom Judaism is a good fit after all. The conclusions of this book aren't the usual trite condemnations of one lifestyle or another, but they are satisfying and real, which makes this book's contribution truly meaningful, rather than merely sensationalistic.

4 out of 5 stars Everyone is on a journey.......2001-05-09

This was an educating book regarding the journey of one brother into spiritual enlightenment while the older brother made a journey to human understanding. While we may not all agree that Fundamentalism (regardless of whether it is Jewish, Christian, or Islamic) is the answer, this book may help each of us to understand our relatives and friends that take that road. Worth the read, although the author is a little too close to some of the subject matter to be completely objective.

4 out of 5 stars Brotherly love is more powerful than religion.......2000-11-21

This book is a testiment to the power of brotherly love and acceptance. Josh Hammer has opened his eyes and heart to the transformation of his younger brother, Tony, from a directionless, lost soul to a devoted Hasidic Jew. Josh's apparent objectivity is never far removed from his personal feelings. He struggles with learning much about himself as he struggles to understand his brother and the life Tony has chosen sequestered in a world of faith and devotion to G-d. While not universal to all Baalei T'shuva (Returners to the faith), the book does give a realistic portrayal of the difficulties of the family in dealing Tony's transformation.
