    Book Description

The public has a right to know and decide about aviation safety issues and information. Flying is a public trust and commercial passengers assume that trust is engaged with responsibility by those in power. This fact extends far beyond those with a pilot’s license, the FAA, the NTSB or any other regulatory agency. Since air travel belongs to the people, as such, it deems unquestionable safety as the foremost factor afforded to all those who board an aircraft in that trust.

The purpose of this book is to challenge you the reader to see that you have and hold a responsibility in your hands, whereby, you become the agents of change within and throughout the airline industry.

1 out of 5 stars An Apalling Matter.......2002-01-01

This book is tedious, has little direction, and is badly written. Entitled "An Explosive Matter" the book briefly summarizes fuel tank explosions. Drawing facts from earlier aircraft accidents, the authors offer little analysis beyond `there was an empty fuel tank, a spark, and then an explosion - empty fuel tanks are hazardous'. After this `analysis', the authors go on to criticize recent advances in aviation such as ETOPS, and the reduced 2-pilot cockpit arrangement in more recent airliners. The two-sentence justifications made in support such criticisms are total garbage. The extensive use of capitals and exclamation marks do nothing to improve the appeal of the book which is plagued by frequent factual inaccuracies (e.g. KAL 007 being shot down in 1996, and the combined death toll of SR111 and TWA #800 being 659 deaths) and both spelling and grammatical errors; I still find it hard to believe that NTSB is spelt wrong over 5 times!

        Book Description

This unique book investigates the synthesis, kinetics, and thermal decomposition properties and processing of energy-producing materials used in propellants, explosives, pyrotechnic, and gas-generating compositions. Thermal Decomposition and Combustion of Explosives and Propellants provides several mechanisms and stages for the thermal decomposition and combustion reactions of most flammable compounds and their mixtures, such asaliphatic and aromatic nitrocompounds, nitramines, nitroesters, organic azides, furazanes, tetrazols, difluoroamines, polynitrous heterocycles, and onium salts. The authors examine the classic problem of the dependence of explosive activity on molecular structure, using applications to predict the stability, compatibility, and the stabilization of explosives and propellant components. They also offer experimental results examining factors such as subsurface decomposition, evaporation, and dispersion of materials, which can be used to control combustion of condensed systems. Providing several approaches to stability, safety, and controlled combustion of flammable substances, Thermal Decomposition and Combustion of Explosives and Propellants is a multi-dimensional resource for graduate students, researchers and professionals interested in chemical kinetics, the combustion and synthesis of high-energy materials, criminal forensics, and the field of explosives, powders, and solid rocket propellants.

5 out of 5 stars Explosive Effects and Applications.......2001-04-04

This is a great book for engineers who want to gain some basic knowledge about explosives. The book has detailed chemical descriptions and design equations. It is a very valuable book, especially for me, since I will be going into the Air Force. I would reccomend this book to anyone, but engineers will get the most out of it. My only negative comment is that the price is rather high, but that is pretty normal for engineering texts.

                Book Description

An illustrated and comprehensive handbook for women on coping physically, mentally and emotionally with "the change".

The hormonal changes in women during menopause have a dramatic impact on physical, mental, and emotional health. Although menopause is universal for women, no two go through it the same way.

The Menopause Bible is a contemporary reference book that explains what it is, what happens, what can be done to minimize its effects, and how to maintain optimal health. The book is designed to help all women whether choosing a drug-free transition or medical intervention.

The book covers every aspect of menopause:

In-depth and up-to-date information on the controversial hormone replacement therapy (HRT) includes the risk factors, who can benefit, recommended monitoring procedures, and courses of treatment. While women with menopausal difficulties were once treated solely with HRT, now there are a number of options, including alternative treatments such as herbal replacement supplements.

Illustrated with full-color anatomical drawings and helpful photographs, The Menopause Bible enables a woman to take active control of her overall health at a critical time in her life.

5 out of 5 stars very nice book.......2007-03-15

I realized I had to buy several books on menopause because they all add a little bit more to the puzzle. this is a really nice book. it's quality. not cheaply put together. the pages are glossy and the pictures are nice. it not only tells me all about the symptoms, options, etc... but how to put on make-up as you age, how to tell if you have breast cancer with all the options. how to do exams. Just a wide variety of things. it covered small details I didn't get in other books. It was a good purchase...

I've never eaten at the restaurant (but think I saw it when I visited San Fran years ago). The book is written in simple sturdy english. The recipes are authentic. Best of all, I like the fantastic fables and hearsay of not-so-old China (and personal anecdotes)as related by Chung. Enjoyable to read, even if you never intend to try out any of the recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Chinese food will never be the same after trying this book.......2000-09-21

For those who love to eat or cook Chinese food, this book is a must-have. It details about 50 tasty recipes from Hunan province in China, and is totally authentic. The author has avoided "spicing down" recipes for American readers -- garlic, hot chiles and other Hunan staples are used boldly and creatively, and your taste buds will be crying out for more after trying these gems. In fact, my wife, who is herself Chinese, relies on Henry Chung's book more than the Chinese-language cookbooks she brought from Taiwan. It really is that good.

I have searched for a copy of this wonderful book for over 5 years and have recently found it,it is my most treasured of many cookbooks! I have been a customer of this wonderful actually fabulous restaurant in San Francisco for over 20 years, it just seems to be just as wonderful as before! This book has allowed me to duplicate my favorite hot and sour chicken many times over. what a shame it is out of print, Henry is very much alive and the place still a success. what a wonderful, simple and accurate book, hopefully this book will someday be back in print and I may share it with my friends.

5 out of 5 stars The Absolute Best Hunanese Cookbook -- Ever.......1999-08-10

It is a shame that this cookbook is out of print. My copy (bought at the original Hunan in 1990) is sadly stained and dog-eared. I begged at my last visit (7/98) for another copy -- no luck, but they were kind enough to give me an even more aged brochure which includes just a few recipes, but it does have the recipe for their wonderful hot chile sauce (not included in the book). As for me, I'm headed on my first visit to China next week. Don't think I'll find another copy of Henry's great book, but I might find the source of his inspiration.

By the way, the restaurant now serves a "more reasonably low fat" version of Double-Cooked pork. My advice is to go back to the original recipe, with the flour drenching and wok-frying -- it is a knockout you will always remember (pork fat rules!)

Stunningly Beautiful Photos of giant pandas in their natural environment. In addition, to photos of pandas along streams, in the snow, climbing trees, with their young, or eating bamboo, there are also rare time sequenced photos of a giant panda leaping/jumping in the wild (p40,41,62,63). There are also some very cute photos of baby giant pandas (p46-55,69). Of particular note are the essays by Dr. Hu Jinchu who is a professor of biology and director of The Rare Animals Research Institute of Nanchong Teacher's College, the director of the China Wildlife Conservation Association, and the co-author of the scientifically ground breaking book "The Giant Pandas of Wolong" with George B. Schaller, et al. Understandably, the conservation information is dated, for example when the book was publish it listed only 12 giant panda reserves ( now there are 33 nature reserves where there are giant pandas ). The only real complaint that I would have is that some photos are split between two pages - I would have preferred to not have any of these photos split in two.

This is a great book for quilters of all levels. The blocks are relatively easy to piece and the birds are beautiful! The book has so many great ideas of how to use the quilt blocks. I am going to get a lot of use out of these patterns - both for myself and gifts for others.

I am giving this book 5 stars, in part because having picked up the book at the quilt shop I could not put it down. I just had to own this book. The photos of finished projects are varied enough to give you some great ideas of your own. I can't wait to get started on some of these birds!

Having said that, I agree with a previous poster that the instructions for the actual sewing together of the projects are very confusing. I read through the complete instructions for several of the projects and I can see a beginner having a heck of a time with them.

Recently got this book for myself and was very pleased after having a look . The projects in the book are foundation paper piecing which gives very accurate results . The Birds given are just soo beautiful , I am looking forward to complete a sampler quilt with all the birds in it . There are various other projects too. If you are looking for a book with complete instructions and variety of projects , with paper piecing and birds ...this book is for you !!

4 out of 5 stars I'd have given it three stars if "Paper Piecing" wasn't in the title.......2007-02-17

The directions for the paper piecing are awesome. That said, the sewing instructions for the projects in the book have a lot to be desired. I sew a lot so I was able to make my way through making a pillow out of a bird block. I started out following the directions in the book but finally gave up and went my own route. Beginner sewers would have a lot more trouble. I gave it four stars because it is mainly a paper piecing book and it does that part well. I would have given it five if the directions for sewing the actual projects would have been better.

I really enjoy this book and have shared it with bird loving friends and relatives! My daughter wants crib bumper pads made with these birds on them for her infant daughter. It is a fun book to look at and I can hardly wait to get started making some of the blocks. Only down side is I wish there were MORE birds in the book. I will be looking for vol.2.

This book is a very useful guide to a large variety of Florida plants, as well as a superb collection of truly stunning photographs. It can be used for simple visual identification, but its organization by family and its binomial key make it user-friendly for the botanist as well.

1 out of 5 stars Includes invasive species!.......2006-04-10

Don't buy this book! It says it lists native wildflowers, but lythrum salicaria (purple loosestrife) is listed in the table of contents. This species has been listed as an invasive species or noxious weed in about thirty states. Its sale is prohibited by law in several of those states. Obviously the authors did not do their homework. I wouldn't be surprized if there were other invasives listed in there too.

                      3 out of 5 stars Good content, don't like how it's presented.......2002-12-29

This is one of the better books when it comes to information about growing native plants. The authors are not shy about their opinions and the book is better for it.

On the down side, the book is not nearly as exhaustive as Cullina's books. I also don't like that it puts the photographs apart from the text, as this makes for some annoying page-flipping. The quality of the photographs is also rather amateurish.

A tepid recommendation would be a hearty one with a better layout and improved pictures.

                      2 out of 5 stars too garbled.......2002-09-05

I have an extensive collection of books on native plants - and the plants
to go with them! This book is one of my least favorite. The information is
not well sorted or presented. I would recommend C. Colston Burrell's
"Encyclopedia of Wildflowers" in preference to this book.
Or Carole Otteson's "Native Plant Primer" with trees and shrubs in addition to
                      herbaceous perennials.

5 out of 5 stars The bible of native flowers!.......2001-07-25

I never thought I would take a gardening book to bed with me. This one is a pleasure to read and taught me a lot about identification and gardening uses of native wildflowers of the southeast and northeast. It's the first book I grab to look up a species. Lots of full color photographs have made it much easier for me to identify the plants I want at the nursery. The two authors are coming from different perspectives - one has a natural meadow/woodlands landscape and the other uses native plants in a more controlled garden setting along with exotics. Between the two of them, the reader gets a balanced idea of the possibilities of introducing native flowers to their own yards. I only wish the index combined scientific names with common names, rather than having two separate indexes. It would also be convenient if the plant photos were on the same pages as the descriptions. But those are minor criticisms of an overall superb book.

5 out of 5 stars good for everybody.......1999-02-03

This book is helpful for anyone interested in gardening. The scientific names are beneficial and the color photos are exquisite and provide assistance in identifying plants. An excellent book for the novice or the amatuer.

                      1 out of 5 stars Native plants???.......2007-08-30

Invasive plants are an increasingly big problem in the US costing tax payers millions of dollars. I'm not too thrilled with a book titled "Go Native!" that appears to be promoting exotic invasive species of any type in a North American Landscape... but then the author's title did additionally state ":Gardening With Native Plants and Wildflowers in the Lower Midwest". Many people assume all wildflowers are native plants. This is simply not true. Many wildflowers are extremely undesirable invasive plants that have naturalized and are wreaking havoc in our environment. Native plants don't naturalize because they belong in the environment in which they occur. The term naturalized is almost exclusively used for exotic plants that can quite successfully outcompete native plants. If one is really concerned about the environment and wants to "Go Native", it might be best to consider selecting a more appropriate book.

1 out of 5 stars Native? Are you kidding?.......2006-04-10

This book lists several severely invasive, nonnative species in its table of contents. Euonymus alatus, Berberis thunbergii, and lythrum salicaria are all extremely invasive plants across the country. It is illegal to sell lythrum salicaria (purple loosestrife) in several states. At least thirty states list it as invasive. Berberis thunbergii, or Japanese barberry is listed by 45 states as a noxious weed. Don't support a book that sells invasive species as native "wildflowers."

3 out of 5 stars Good reference, not so good layout.......2002-12-29

I find this a useful book that I refer back to time to time, as I innately trust the author's advice. There is excellent info in here on a plant's propagation/division and planting requirements. I haven't found anything better.

There are problems: 1) I wish it was more exhaustive in the number of plants it covers, although for a primer it picks really good candidates. 2) It commits the common sin of putting the photographs in their own section instead of with the text, substituting nearly useless line drawings next to the text. 3) The book is topically organized -- plants for shade, using ground cover, developing woodland gardens, etc. I find this rather annoying, and I can never find what I want right away. I'm forever referring to the index. 4) It's presented on cheap paper stock in an amateurish paragraph format, with no page divisions for different plants. This makes it needlessly difficult to use as a reference.

In sum, there is a lot of great info in here, enough to recommend it. I just wish the layout was better.

5 out of 5 stars native plants can thrive in abundance with just a little stewardship.......2001-09-05

"Go Native...", written more as warm personal narrative, is as extensive as an encyclopedia without being dry, includes superb drawings and gorgeous color photos. It is a great help if one personally chooses to prepare for the low maintenance stewardship of our natural "wildlife" environment, maybe heeding Thoreau's simple joys of nature. "Perhaps it is time for each of us to consider taking a single step" suggests Harstad.
Even a modest land plot can be a natural theater of brilliantly sunlit landscape in constantly changing shadows and colors. Some, albeit greatly scaled down, might be reminiscent of those scenes from the 19th Century landscape artists, such as the Hoosier Group and the Hudson River School, that at the beginning of the 20th Century inspired today's goals in Conservation and Habitat Preservation. Or, as I can imagine, your own "...Brigadoon...look in your heart and there it will be."
Carolyn Harstad writes that native plants and wildflowers have the ability to thrive and survive on their own and when the "pioneers" came "...they wrote glowing reports... that the land through which they were traveling looked like an immense flower garden." Can we assume that similar sentiments inspired George Washington, Daniel Boone, Lewis and Clark among others of America's early visionaries?
Here is a small but highly pertinent cross-cultural reference: Eva Cassidy sings of seasonal moods in her typically heartfelt manner: "Autumn Leaves", "Fields of Gold", "What a Wonderful World", and "Blue Skies" on the cd "Live at Blues Alley".

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2000-06-30

This book was wonderful in describing the various plants that are native to the lower Midwest and which ones (that you would have believed to be native) are not. A must have for persons who would like to create a native yard. A great gardening tool.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic career and work book!.......2003-05-12

Do not let the title of this book fool you. Although it is designed to help people with specific types of disabilities choose a career, and find and keep a job, it is an excellent work with a wealth of sound advice of us all. Carefully researched and written in a clear and concise style, it is one of the best books on career and employment issues I have ever read.
The book consists of an introduction, 15 chapters, a bibliography, and an index. The book is a treasure trove of information and techniques that should be useful to everyone, not just people with the specific disabilities described in the title.
The book is well organized and written in a clear an easy to understand style that helps the reader to analyze and deal with the various issues faced by people with learning disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and Dyslexia.
However, as I read through the book I realized that these are issues that everyone faces when they are looking for a job, dealing with school, and handling workplace problems. The author's advice is applicable to all of us. Her thoughtful counsel about advancing in the work place, dealing with co workers, looking for a job, and all the other things she addresses, is good solid advice for all.
I highly recommend this book to everyone, disabled or not. I would call this book "Universal Design for Finding and Keeping the Job of your Choice!" Everyone should buy and read this book!

This book provides high school students and adults with a variety of strategies to help them explore career options, find a jobs and keep the jobs. It encourages flexible, positive thinking about job options.

The book is formatted in a way that makes it accessible to its intended audience. The print is large, the and the goals of each section are clearly stated.

The author gives excellent information about asking for accommodations, but she does not lose sight of the individual's need for self-knowledge and personal responsibility.

5 out of 5 stars a great resource for physicians involved in counseling.......2000-12-02

This wonderful book is a great resource for all of those professionals who have occasion to counsel people with learning disabilities. Easy to understand advice on issues such as education and career are presented. Interestingly, I believe that the information in this book is also helpful to non learning disabled young people who need a common sense and practical approach to "learning a living". As a physician, this book has been a helpful resource on many occasions.

5 out of 5 stars a non learning disabled reader benefits from this book.......2000-11-25

Learning a Living is a helpful career and educational guide aimed primarily for those with learning disability. However, its common sense approach and pragmatic ideas are helpful for those of us who are also non learning disabled. A wonderful resource for learning disabled, those who live or work with the learning disabled, and those who are beginning to make educational/career decisions. Thank you, Dale Brown

I found this book to be simplistic and of no use. I am older than its target audience which seems to be 15-18. Do not by this book if you are looking for serious career advice.

                                  Memoirs of a beat survivor
This sub title sums up the whole hypocrisy of the white, middle class, hippy baby boomer generation. Guthries memoir takes us from a not so humble start in a good military school for Americas most privileged children to a failed suicide attempt in later life. Guthrie did not survive anything he voluntarily dropped out of society after he took from it all the trimmings that most of the silent majority aspire to achieve.
The same majority that he wants to buy his book to sustain his over extended hippy lifestyle

There is nothing exciting to be read here, it is not an extra-ordinary life like most biographies. But rather a series of tedious juvenile anecdotes typical of any American adolescent. The draft dodging chapter is mundane at best, but Guthrie tries to have us believe that he out smarted the system.

This book typifies all that was wrong with the beat generation. Guthrie done nothing in some great locations. He associates himself with the heavyweights of that time but actually does nothing to help them with either their cause or philosophy.

Guthrie like the rest of his generation basically just took what he could and put nothing back in return. This literary offering is another extension of that philosophy and serves only to demonstrate that the author, like the rest of his ilk is still on the take.

Not a good book didn't enjoy it at all

                                  5 out of 5 stars A LIFE ARTIST.......2003-10-28

Remember Woody Allen's movie "Zelig" that places the chameleon-like Zelig in all the important places among all the major people of the history of the time? Insert "Hammond Guthrie" as Zelig in all these places from LA to London, from Amsterdam to Tangier and you'll get an idea of the scope of this memoir. In reviewing it, the temptation is to reel off lists of the famous people that the author has known. But one has only to glance at the well-appointed index to see the illustrious names. The spectrum of his contacts - artists, architects, cartoonists, writers, musicians, film-makers and even scientists - boggles the mind. He has a talent for schmooozing with people from diverse cultures and persuasions, famous and infamous. He can be the hipster extraordinaire in L.A, the proper gentleman in London, the cutting edge artiste in Amsterdam, as well as the flamboyant "European with two wives" in Tangier. His adventures there read like a page from Tennessee Williams' *Suddenly Last Summer* or Lawrence Durrell's *Alexandria Quartet* (but with a more engaging spin).

Being all things to all people, he had his finger in every pie and his hand on the pulse of everything artistically innovative in the `60s and early `70s. In addition to being a painter, writer, musician and film-maker, he experimented with "...cinematic dissolve and juxtaposition of genre" in his "event rituals," tone poems and overdubbed happenings.

There are hilarious episodes, from getting a fake marine ID in Mexico to his elaborate and ultimately successful ruse to avoid the draft. Once he jumped out of a car he'd hitched a ride in when the driver told him it was stolen. He ditched the "supposed narcosi" the driver had given him behind the first bush he came to and "...to avoid the obvious, I ducked into the darkened courtyard of a quasi-subterranean establishment called the Fifth Estate..." where he met some people he would know for the rest of his life.

I most enjoyed the odd little serendipitous scenes such as the time when,
still in school, but working for the summer with his high school band buddies at a Lake near Tahoe, Hammond met three Angels who had descended on the town café, much to the perplexity of the waitress who made noises about closing at 9:30 a.m. When a smooth Latin voice intervened on his behalf, Hammond turned around to see "...three of the most ominous-looking human beings I had ever laid eyes on." After inviting them politely (he "knew enough to be very polite) to his band's evening at the local lodge, one of them asked Hammond if he "...drank beer or smoked dope." Says Guthrie, "I told him I certainly drank beer and had `tripped out on LSD once," but hadn't smoked any dope, which was the truth. (Never tell an Angel anything but the truth.") His "outlaw companions" cracked up at this. Then Hammond's benefactor handed him his "senior member of the Hell's Angels" club card saying that "...it might come in handy some day." It was signed, "Zorro."

Two years later, Guthrie saw a news article that identified the three "modern-day gladiators" that he'd met in his youth. More years later, flat broke in Barstow, CA "...where tumbleweeds go to die..." a biker wearing Angel colors roared up and Guthrie's "speed-drenched brain" remembered Zorro's "well-worn wallet card." He "...stumbled up beside the hairy behemoth" presented him with the card and asked politely for assistance. Whereupon, "...he sized me up for just a second, smiled as only an Angel from Hell can, and said, "Hop on little buddy and I'll take you anywhere in the country you want to go."

Or how about the time that Lawrence Ferlinghetti handed him the original hand-written pages of Jack Kerouac's *Scriptures of the Golden Eternity* or when Ginserg handed him a Tibetan Dorje and "...a numbing energy surged through my arm and my hand spasmed out in front of me like a humanoid dowser's wand!"

Guthrie met with William Burroughs in London, who helped in publishing his *Belfast Insert* which was an experiment in "cut/up writing." "Cut/up writing" explains the author, "is an extension of Tristan Tzara's early Dada prose taken to a painter's point of view and then reapplied to the written word. The resulting texts of combined structure and newly formed contents offer an unusual approach to the written space/time continuum." (There is a picture of the cover of Belfast Insert in the very interesting photo section of the book).

Of Emmett Grogan, Guthrie says: "I was especially enamored by his consciously plagiaristic use of Adolph Hitler's Mein Kamphian Diabologue at the Roundhouse in London, during the "Dialectics of Liberation" event, a counter-conference of hip dignitaries. At first he was vigorously applauded for his oration and then people cried out in staunch indignation when he revealed the origin of the words."

And although Guthrie's heartbreak at the loss of his wife to a drug smuggler was obviously real and excruciating, perhaps the subtext of his reaction was that the event served as an excuse NOT to take the plum of artistic success offered him by Willem Sandberg (his mentor and friend in Amsterdam) and limit himself to painting alone but to remain free and flexible.

All these experiences are liberally laced with copious amounts of pharmacopoeia of every kind from grass and hash to hallucinogens to amphetamines so these pages are compressed life. Elegant as champagne and caviar, rich as eggnog and cheesecake, the memoir runs cinematic-like reels through the imagination. Since the author's life is not over yet (his book begins and ends with his decision to kill himself) it's fitting that the very last words on the last page are "to be continued."

One can only hope that the words mean just that and that in the fullness of time, we will be treated to the rest of the story. It will be well worth waiting for.

5 out of 5 stars Seeing the Sixties.......2003-03-06

Hammond Guthrie's road through the Sixties was sometimes happy go-lucky, fun filled and tremendously creative. A multitalented poet, painter and musician finding himself in a decade that encouraged the artist to invent cool new worlds. He portrays his many journeys and places in a newly published memoir "AsEverWas."
There are also darker worlds in Guthrie's life and soul. And their pain and despair get the same clear thorough treatment as the great highs and happenings
that at the beginning, energized his path and pushed him forward.
Hammond starts out in southern California. His mother abandons him. His father is sort of mixed up in the American Intelligence community and is distant. There is a second wife and Hammond actually chooses military high school over family life. The school is filled LA-Hollywood type uncared for rich kids and Guthrie learns about sex, drugs and rock n'roll.
Moving on to San Francisco the author dodges the draft and provides us with one of the best in-print accounts of the method acting involved in pulling it off.
Along the way, he encounters the Diggers, Bolinas, Allen Ginsberg, Carmen McRae, experimental film making, improve theater and the over dosed colorful world of San Francisco's fantastic hip. He also adds to the adventure by taking a beautiful bold wife.
And then on to post-Beatles International Times William Burroughs London and he fully feasts on its experimental artistic community. And then to 'the dope is almost legal' Amsterdam with its Provos and houseboats. And Hammond the painter is discovered by Willem Sandberg, a great presiding maestro of the international art scene.
Up to now the tale told in AsEverWas is filled with endlessly expanding light. The Sixties are nurturing the author, developing his multi faceted talents and preparing for a larger stage and an enthusiastic reception. He is about to become famous. And then (as it was with so many of us) the rug was pulled out from under our feet. Since we were off the ground for much of the time, it took us a while to notice the terrible turn, but it did hit all the more harshly for our tardiness.
Hammond's wonderful wife and pal for life gets attracted to a hard core gang of dope smugglers and there is one in particular that stimulates her fantasies. The remainder of the memoir is an account of the destruction of the marriage and the almost complete spiritual dismemberment of Hammond Guthrie. He blames himself for his wife's alienation and gives up his art as a kind of punishment sacrifice, in order to make amends and win her back. The pair move on to Tangier for a fascinating, weirdly amusing telling of Hammond's efforts to spring his wife's lover from a Moroccan hell-house prison.
It struck me that the end both of Hammond's marriage and his art does so much resemble the collapse of the whole Sixties with it's new found passion for criminality over creativity and for an inexplicable capacity not to see the tragedy of it all.
What gets the reader through it and actually enthusiastic about the book is Guthrie's cool writing style. When he's describing the bitter, the sweet, Burroughs, Richie Havens, his wife, his father, Allen Ginsberg, a Dutch houseboat or a Moroccan cafe, the author is always generous in detail, ironic, gentle and insightful. You see, feel and understand the moods, people and places that shaped an extraordinary decade, even if its ending wasn't up to its promise.
I took a different trip back then--more political and activist, Berkeley instead of San Francisco, Algeria rather than Morocco, it's more like Hammond was a very likable neighbor than a member of my commune. Yet pouring over his life and times teaches me much about my own.
And that rarely happens. For its style and its lessons, Hammond Guthrie's memoir is a rare and important achievement.

                                    Book Description

Isaac Orobio de Castro, a crypto-Jew from Portugal, was one of the most prominent intellectual figures of the Sephardi Diaspora in the 17th century. After studying medicine and theology in Spain and pursuing a distinguished medical career, he was arrested by the Spanish Inquisition for
practicing Judaism, tortured, tried, and imprisoned. He later emigrated to France and became a professor of medicine at Toulouse before openly professing his Judaism and going to Amsterdam to join the thriving Portuguese community there. Amsterdam was then a city of great cultural creativity and
religious pluralism. In this atmosphere Orobio flourished, and went on to become an outstanding spokesman and apologist for the Jewish community. This fascinating biography sheds light on the intricate life of a unique Jewish community of former Christians who had openly returned to Judaism. It
focuses on the particular dilemmas of the converts, their attempts to establish boundaries between their Christian past and their new identity, their internal conflicts, and their ability to create new forms of Jewish life and expression.
