Book Description
The book "Growing up through the Depression and During the War" was written by myself, Tony Fiorentino, to give you an idea of how a young boy, along with his family, survived The Depression between 1929 and 1938.
My mother passed away when I was seven (7) years old and from that point on I had to, more or less, depend on my own wits and knowledge and become a young man who went into the Naval service during the World War.
I spent most of my time on submarines fighting the Germans and Italians in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico patrolling and training other future Submariners.
After almost being sunk three (3) or four (4) times, two (2) of which were with the assistance of our own Coast Guard, I decided to transfer to surface ships. I fought the Japanese through many of the campaigns in the South Pacific helping to capture all of the islands between Hawaii and Japan.
There are a lot of horrible stories of war experiences witnessed and told by me in this book.
Following the Japan surrender, I was discharged at Lido Beach of Long Island, NY on Dec. 15th in 1945. I returned home to New Jersey and my family and took advantage of the GI Bill of rights, which entitled me to learn how to fly. There are stories about flying, boating, motorcycles and women.
I tried to catch up on all the things I'd missed, in the four (4) years of service duty. I kicked around in New Jersey for the next couple of years and finally moved to Brooklyn, NY. While there, I belonged to a gang and was getting into quite a bit of trouble, being young and wild.
I eventually joined the Merchant Marine where I served from 1949 to 1953 and then sailed with the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey during the Korean War, to ports in Texas and South America.
After a few bad experiences and ending up in jail in Baytown, Texas, I decided I had had enough of the Merchant Marines.
I once again returned home to New Jersey in 1953 and went back to work for the Construction Union. Having bounced around with my motorcycle, flying and following the recovery from a horrible crash on my Harley, I joined the Moose Club and thought more seriously about my future. While bartending there I met a girl and decided I would settle down and get married, again, at 28 years old.
I feel sure that when you start reading this book, you will find many interesting stories and chapters, as many people have told me The contents of this book is about, Love, Naval service in WW 11 war, merchant Marine, Marriage, Young fun, Flying, Boating, Motorcycles, life in New Jersey.
I hope you all enjoy it very much as I have, living and writing it. God bless you all. And best wishes for all of your desires and dreams.
Sincerely, Tony Fiorentino

Book Description
The art of invention knows no color. But in the early days, patents for new inventions were not available to blacks. Until they were considered citizens, black inventors were ignored, or their masters took credit for their discoveries. After the Civil War, black inventors still had to fight educational disadvantages and prejudice. Their struggles and their genius come alive on these pages through the words of master storyteller Jim Haskins.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect Combination of Personal and Invention Details.......2002-10-12
This book is a must read for students (and teachers). Each short chapter describes different black inventors (men and women). The easy to follow writing will keep a student interested with its combination of personal information, facts about their inventions and facts about issues related to that time period. Find answers to the time period in which blacks were not even allowed to receive patents, which black inventors worked with Thomas Edison and why George Washington Carver never saw his mother again.
Product Description
Illustrated with over 50 illustrations, and fully indexed, this is a well written, well designed, well illustrated book. It's a vivid account of the great inventors and their inventions, from the wheel and the jib sail to the audion tube and atomic energy. This series should not be shunned for it's copyright date. On many subjects, the history of invention included, these books still represent the best introductions for young people available.
Customer Reviews:
A superb general reference (but somewhat dated).......2003-02-19
I think this is a grand book for the amateur astronomer and telescope afficianado. Learner has done an excellent job of tracing the history of telescope development in a way that the layperson can follow easily. His descriptions of the personalities and personal histories of some of the key players in this development adds to the "interest factor" for the less technically-oriented history buff. Admittedly the book falls short because it was published in 1981 and so says nothing about the more recent development of the apochromatic refractor so popular in amateur astronomy these days. In fact, the chapter on amateur telescopes could be arguably much more complete and descriptive than it is since it really doesn't delve into the development of the MCT, the SCT, etc. But limitations on the treatment of amateur telescopes aside, this is a terrific book!

Easy Referance.......2005-08-03
This book was required reading for my Psychopharmacology class, and I am so glad this was chosen. It was easy to undersatnd and it is easy to referacne back too. I feel it should be part of any therpist's bookshelf.
An excellent resource for the mental health professional.......2004-10-07
Dr. Diamond's pragmatic and commonsense approach is ideal for mental health professionals without (and with!!) a background in psychopharmacology. The book evolved from a handout he gave to nonmedical trainees with whom he worked. It's insightful, based on real clinical situations, and provides what you absolutely need to know plus more in an understandable format.
A must have for a desktop reference!!.......2003-08-28
I am a school psychologist and with all the prescriptions that we need to know about in order to help students, this has been invaluable. New medications are always coming out and this book was very handy for knowing the side effects, which can be useful if a student is falling asleep in class and it is found that his medication causes drowsiness.
I would definetly recommend this book, I just hope they come out with another so that I can update myself on some of these new prescriptions that were not out at the time it was published!!
Saving lives, one reader at a time........2003-02-25
This book is a lifesaver for my family.
I struggle to keep a family member "on their meds" so they may continue to live independently. This book has explained, in a simple but sufficiently thorough way, things I've needed to know:
1) What the medications prescribed actually do;
2) Side effects of prescribed medications, so I know which complaints I hear about side effects are actually from the meds, or whether other health concerns should be addressed;
3) Relative costs of medications, so I can address complaints about the medications' costs;
4) Alternative medications, and why they might be prescribed;
5) Time lag - some meds may take weeks before they have therapeudic effect, even though the patient taking them experience side effects immediately.
6) Time lag - if a patient decides to stop taking their meds, there is often a period of time between that last pill and relapse.
Meds, even though they are less than perfect (don't we know!!) are still the miracle keeping mentally ill people alive and "at home", figuratively and literally. It is SO easy for the people who need these meds to stop taking them, with absolutely disasterous results.
Although psychiatrists and pharmacists may have had education in this, social workers, family members, and even general practitioners that are on the front lines dealing with this on a daily basis really do have a need to know this material.
I'd give this book a Milky Way's worth of stars if I could.
A Great book for Families, Social Workers, Consumers.......1998-10-13
We recently had the pleasure of a hosted discussion by Dr. Diamond at our web site.
One person sent me the following review of this book:
The following is an abbreviated version of the original article: Book Review: Instant Psychopharmacology by Ronald J. Diamond, M.D. W.W. Norton & Company, Inc., ISBN 0-393-70269-3 (pbk.).
Dr. Ron Diamond, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School, as well as the medical director of the Mental Health Clinic of Dane County, recently published a book on psychotropic medications. Written in a remarkably straightforward manner, this informative handbook is a rare treat.
Indeed, it's quite a resource for psychologists, nurses, and social workers who are often reading and incorporating various sources of data (chart notes, medical histories, etc.) to assist in treatment planning, answering clients' questions and/or communicating with physicians. Students in non-medical mental health fields will also find this book useful, especially the annotated bibliography. The handbook's bibliography includes web addresses for accessing psychopharmacology information through the Internet.
I would also encourage mental health consumers and their significant others to consult Instant Psychopharmacology. Although it is subtitled, "A guide for the nonmedical mental health professional", the author alternately addresses his colleagues and clients throughout the text. Diamond achieves an appropriate balance between offering detailed information (dosages and drug profiles) as well as general facts about neurotransmitter systems and how drugs work. The book's greatest strength is how clearly it's written Chapter One, "Psychopharmacology: The Rules of the Game", is a must- read for all consumers.
Another strength is how up-to-date it is, in terms of the various types of psychotropic drugs available. I can also appreciate its usefulness for researchers such as myself, who frequently ask study participants to list the medications they're currently prescribed.
In this regard, it's extremely helpful to have the appendices which list drugs by their brand names as well as their generic names. The book also deals with the somewhat sensitive topic of sexual side effects directly and matter-of-factly.
In summary, Instant Psychopharmacology is a wonderful resource. I strongly encourage consumers and family members as well as mental health professionals to consult it.

Dissapointing and bloated, but has nice pictures.......2002-12-15
I got the Lexicon with the idea that it would prove to be a useful identification tool for the various species and strains of cichlids I keep. In that sense, the book is fairly successful - there is a plethora of beautiful photos of many, many species.
There are some serious problems with this book though. The most glaring problem is that Axelrod, in at least two instances, has printed two copies of the same photo and called the specimen two different species !!! He uses the same photo, just reversed, for Aulonucara jacobfreirgei as he does for another Aulonocara sp. Same thing with two species of Apistogramma.
Another dissapointing feature about this book is the information content of the text - there isn't any. Axelrod's favourite topic in the text is himself. Axelrod is more interested in telling us about how important he is and about how much influence he has had on the aquarium hobby than he is in providing useful biological information. Oftentimes the text more resembles the ramblings of a senile old man than a scientific discussion of the species in question. Additionally, the length of the text could have been considerably shortened by replacing the often lengthy sentance about who described the species and when with the taxonomic standard of putting the name of the species' author(s) and the year of description behind the species name.
My final beef with this book is the poor taste of the author is his discussions of the classification of cichlids(actually, rants is probably a better description). Axelrod repeatedly poo-poo's the works of cladists (Axelrod calls them splitters)- challenging cladistic theory is all well and good, but in most instances the criticism is in the form of a snide comment about the other author or their classification. Never is any evidence provided to support Axelrod's claims/criticisms - one is left with the impression that the reason Axelrod opposes a new classification is simply that it is new and different than his ideas. Some of Axelrod's comments border on slander - this should never have been allowed to go to print.
The Lexicon had great potential, but overall it is a bloated, arrogant work. With proper editing it would have been much more useful. If you want a book with nice pictures, than this book is OK - just dont read anything in it :-)
A good resource for the cichlid lover........2000-12-14
I have to admit I was a bit disappointed when I got this book. It wasn't that the book wasn't good, but it simply wasn't incredible, which is what I expected.
The book does a good job of describing the major families of cichlids. Detail is provided about where they come from, what the environment there is like, and general information about the temperment of that family of fish.
Unfortunately there isn't always details about each individual fish.
The book provides a color picture of most fish, although the quaility is sometimes lacking. Unfortunately many fish are featured with only a color drawing, which in my opinion simply doesn't do the fish justice.
This is definetely a great gift for the cichlidiot!
An important book for the cichlid specialist.......1998-09-26
I purchased the first edition of this book as soon as it was available. It contains photos and drawings of as many cichlid species as possible. It attempts better than any other book to include every known cichlid. If you have purchased a cichlid species and want to identify it or confirm the name you purchased it under, this book is useful. There is a wealth of information on the hobby history of species and husbandry information on some. General information from introductory books about cichlids is seldom repeated here. There are species covered that have not been bred, or even never imported as aquarium subjects. Information will of course be sparse. Well known information about common species is omitted, but little-known information is here . If you will have only one cichlid book in your library, and want basic information, this is not that book. If you want several cichlid books, this should be one of them. And of course if you want the one book with the most cichlid pictures and the most cichlid listings, THIS IS IT. I enjoy Dr. Axelrod's observations and opinions. I've read a number of books and magazine articles by him, and you may have to reread and read other works of his to appreciate them fully. Dr. Axelrod has been very influential in the development and directions the aquarium hobby has taken since the fifties. I would give this book another star, but the first edition which I have is already missing some newly imported species and there are some cichlid photos I'd like to see replaced . That's probably not fair of me since there will always (I hope) be new species introduced to the hobby and better photos taken. If you want a good introductory book, I suggest THE CICHLID AQUARIUM by Dr. Paul Loiselle. I prefer the organization and index of the first edition of Dr. Loiselle's book, but either one is a find for the new cichlid enthusiast.
Every Fish But..........1998-04-09
If you want a book that shows you a picture or a drawing of every cichlid that there is then this book is for you. BUT if you want to learn about the fish you see then this book is not for you. It mentions very little in the way of behaviour, eating habits etc. If you want to keep cichlids in an aquarium, rather than go out and catch them, then this book isn't for you. I was very disappointed after I bought the book. It shows lots of very beautiful pictures but tells you little more.

Book Description
This book features more than 75 examples of glass, one of the oldest and most traditional of materials, in its many applications. These range from traditional examples to the new processes created by Ozone and Fusion Glass, which enable architectural glass to be both customized and texturized. Murano Glass is also featured, with its 1000 year old millefiori method updated to appeal to contemporary tastes. Scientific uses of the materials are also explored, including glass in fibre-optic lights and a new dermatological cream that contains millions of particles.
Glass is seen in all it's applications-- including architecture, furniture, lighting, and domestic products-- as well as in all its forms-- mosaic, sandblasted, etched, colored, texturized, and moulded.
Rotovision's "Materials for Inspirational Design" series explores the myriad possibilities of materials for today's designer. Each book in the series introduces the properties of a material and demonstrates some of its extraordinary possibilities.
Customer Reviews:
Visually sophisticated.......2003-01-13
Lefteri assembles a multitude of stunning photography and concise and useful information. As a practising industrial designer it is very useful to have resources that stimulate and inspire new ideas. We are at the beginning of the age of materials, and this book gives a good insight into the world of glass. As the author states in the preface, the book is not technically complete, however, it has a great layout and enough information to spark the mind.
Fantastic.......2003-01-10
Even if you're not in the design world, this book is a must.

For Beginners Only.......2001-06-02
This is a great book for the beginning gardener, but does not provide much information or inspiration for anyone who already knows the basics.
A must buy.......2001-03-30
Green Places in Small Places fills a void left by so many other gardening books. You've got a small place. It may be sunny, it may be dark. It may have soil it may have cement. It may even have people walking over it.But Kerwin Fischer will tell you how to make it a "green place." Green, pink, even blue.
Often using examples of a garden he voluntarily cared for in Manhattan, Mr.Fischer takes you from evaluating your space (chapter 1) through how to tend for your small green place through the seasons (Chapters 8-17).
The book is a welcome change from the many books that are often too "flowery" and abstract to help you get started. But the book does a good job of avoiding technical language (although it does provide a useful explanation of technical terms.)
Highly recommended.
A No-Bull Garden Book.......2001-03-13
This good is a clear step-by-step blueprint for creating a garden virtually anywhere. The author has a dry, ascerbic wit and is a great debunker of misconceptions about plants, as well as a bit of a plant historian. It's a really good read, as well as a really good manual.
Gardening, Not Design.......2001-01-25
Although a good book on planting a small garden this book is not, as I thought by its title, a book on designing small gardens. There are only two fairly complete gardens shown amidst the many beautiful pictures of plants. The book deals almost exclusivly with the planting and growing of flowers, primarily perennials, bulbs, has a chapter on houseplants and treats the subject of soil amendments, fertilizers and such. If you need to know what plants to use in your small garden, this book will help.
This is the most entertaining gardening book ever written........1999-09-15
This book makes me believe I can do anything in the garden. It's rare to pick up a "how-to" book that draws you in and and sounds personal. Green Places in Small Spaces is the antithesis of text book-type writing. This book is great, especially for a first time gardener, and one that doesn't have a lot of time or money to spend on gardening.
I liked the fact that the author spoke to me in the first person, gave good, solid advice backed up with anecdotes, and took me through the seasons. This author is also quite opinionated - - and it made the book a good read. This is the most useful and entertaining gardening book ever written, filled with great advice.

Book Description
When children are in distress or at risk in their homes, social service agencies may institute a number of measures. The most drastic entails removing such children from their homes and placing them in foster care. But placement often fails. Many children, some with severe and long-standing psychological, social, and educational handicaps, simply leave one unstable environment for another. In many cases, things just get worse.
Paul Steinhauer, a child psychiatrist at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, argues that foster placement has suffered from a lack of proven or generally acceptable models of intervention. It has further been impeded by decreases in the funding of social services and by ambivalence, on the part of both society and the mental health professions, towards the child welfare system. These factors have combined to produce a high failure rate, decreasing morale, and widespread disillusionment and burn-out in both foster parents and child welfare workers.
In this book Steinhauer brings together the fragmented research that has been done in a number of different disciplines. From this body of work he develops a model of intervention based on an understanding of attachment theory, development theory, and the practice of mental health consultation. The model provides a basis for pragmatic decision making and step-by-step guidelines for implementation of many of its components.
Steinhauer provides an important tool in the struggle to protect society's most vulnerable population.

Collects Keaton's '40s comic strip, "Flying Jenny"........1997-09-09
The Aviation Art of Russell Keaton collects his
comic strip "Flying Jenny". Flying Jenny, the
story of a plucky female test pilot, ran during
WWII, until Keaton's death. The strip was very popular at its peak, and was rare among the adventure strips of the time, featuring a female
lead.
Keaton's work was very much a product of its
time, mixing a glamour girl artwork style with
its portrayal of Jenny as a talented aviator and
dedicated career woman.
Keaton's own interest in the still-young field
of aviation shines through in the technical
accuracy of his storylines and artwork.
In addition to collecting many of the Sunday and daily strips from the series, it also provides an
extensive section of Keaton's correspondance with
his collaborators and syndicate editors. The only
shortcoming of this collection is that it doesn't
include the complete run of the series, as other
Kitchen Sink collections do; however, the bulk of
the strips drawn by Keaton himself are included,
and the strips excluded are from the other artists
who filled in for him due to wartime duties or
illness.
The book also contains examples of Keaton's early work as a ghost artist on Flash Gordon, and some
of his other aviation strip work.
A great book for aviation afficionados, aspiring
cartoonists, WWII nostalgia buffs, or any
adventure comic fan. An important contribution
to the history of comics, with special interest
to followers of the Trina Robbins books on the
history of women in comics.

At the end of World War II, Britain offered to take in 1,000 young survivors of the German concentration camps; only 732 could be found. The Boys is the story of those children, mostly Polish and Hungarian Jews who, against all odds, survived the horrors of the camps. The title is slightly misleading, as there were a few girls in the group; however, girls under the age of 16 were murdered in the camps at much higher rates than boys. At the time of their ordeal, most of these children were in their teens, though a few were younger. By the time the war ended and the camps were liberated, many were near death. The youths' survival was certainly due in part to their own determination to live, but it was also a matter of chance--unexpected kindness, serendipitous opportunities, the luck of the draw.
Drawn together by their shared experience, "the boys" remained close after emigration to England, and even though several of them have since moved to America and Canada, they continue to celebrate their friendship with an annual dinner. Author Martin Gilbert has attended these reunions for 20 years. Three years ago he suggested the boys send him their recollections of life in the camps, and from these memories this book takes its shape. Harrowing, horrifying, yet deeply moving, The Boys stands as a testimonial to those who survived the Holocaust as well as those who did not.
Book Description
Fewer than 100,000 Jews survived the death camps. This is the story of 732 of those Jews--all under the age of sixteen in 1945. It is the story of what they lost, of what they, as children, suffered, and, most of all, of what they overcame. Robbed of their childhoods, orphaned by violence and bestiality, they ought to have become sociopaths. Instead, they rebuilt their lives and dedicated them to the memory of those who were not as lucky. Told in their voices, The Boys bears witness to the power of the human spirit.

Important testament to holocaust remembrance.......2006-03-08
This remarkable book consists of the comprehensive results interviews with and letters by 732 concentration camp survivors from the holocaust.
These young people-both boys and girls-where settled in Britain after World War II , some stayed and made lives in Britain , while others immigrated to the USA , Australia , Canada and Israel.
Some of the boys made their mark in the Israel War of Independence defending the fledgling Jewish State after it was attacked by five Arab armies , aiming to anihilate all Jews in Israel (as the Arabs and anti-Zionists of the world aim for today i.e a second holocaust.)
Part of the book consists of harrowing eyewitness accounts of the survivors , hence an important testament to holocaust remembrance. The accounts are often graphic and bring the grim reality of what happened to the Jewish people during world War II to bear on us.
It is important to remember the holocaust again , at times when some , like Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and others , deny it's existance.
It is important to remember the holocaust , at a time when the Islamic world and their far-left allies wish to destroy Israel , the phoenix that arose from the ashes of the Jewish people , and subject the Jews of Israel to a second holocaust.
It is interesting to see how for most of the survivors Israel and Zionism where an important part of their consciousness.
Anti-Zionist propaganda aims to prepare for genocide of Jews , in the same way as Nazi propaganda did , and therefore all Anti-Zionist and anti-Israel propaganda should be treated the same as Nazism-with no tolerance.
Most holocaust survivors and their descendants today live in Israel.
The future of the descendants of the survivors needs to be preserved , and therefore Israel must prevail.
That is what we must fight for when we say 'Never Again!'
Neighbors.......2001-07-24
Martin Gilbert is probably one of the most prodigious historians alive. This book required interviews with the 732 survivors it profiles ("Boys" includes both men and women) and those who knew them after the war. Some were as young as eight or nine when the war started. Many themes Gilbert covers are like those one can read in other personal Holocaust histories. But the experiences in each case are unique.
Martin provides two statistics I find particularly haunting. While 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust--including victims of pre-war pogroms, ghettos, concentration and death camps and death marches--only 100,000 survived the camps. And while Britain agreed to take in 1,000 Jewish "children" under the age of 16 after the war, only 732 could be found alive.
But for me, the most fascinating part of the book is the repeated confirmation that those who returned to their homes after the war found the same kind of murderous hatred among their former neighbors as Jan Tomasz Gross describes in Neighbors.
In other words, Jedwabne was not unique. Gross has himself said as much and plans to write more on the subject. But Gilbert also confirms that murders of Jews by locals happened during the war all over Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, and to a lesser extent, in Hungary. It also happened after the war all over Europe--especially in the East. Returning Jews found neighbors who wished them dead, and in thousands of cases killed them. The "boys", obviously, survived. But many lost brothers, parents, friends, after the war, in Poland, Hungary, and elsewhere. Sir Martin Gilbert gives us the living proof. Alyssa A. Lappen
a must read.......2000-06-20
There were times I almost could not continue to read the book. I pictured myself as the mother watching in horror, the child, the sister, the brother, and it all seemed real and unbelievable.
But as with all Holocaust stories, if these fortunate, brave and lucky souls, could have survived and lived to tell the horrors that still invade their minds, the least I owe them and especially those that perished, is that I should read the account.
Inspiring, very well written, and everlasting impact.
"The Boys"ÿ.......1999-12-07
I can't add much to the excellent published reviews. This is one of the most outstanding books I have read. Read it to learn what Jewish life was like before 1939 and to learn of the horrors of the camps and forced marches. Yet the book shows that there is hope as the "boys" remember the words of their fathers "In a place where there are no men, be a man". If you could get an older teen-ager to get through the beginning of this book (which is a little slow), they would get a tremendous amount from this book.
Senseless hate and murder once again capture our attention.......1999-06-11
Reading the boys' descriptions of the inhumanity that they had been through, it is a wonder that they could focus on their future without revenge in their hearts. After liberation and their welcome to Windermere, it is so remarkable that they are motivated to learn and get on with their lives. I now think that the Jews as a whole have gotten a bad press. Who else, could one say, would not be obsessed with violence and getting even? I am proud of the link I have with them.
