Book Description
Lachlan McIntosh (1728-1806) was a prominent Georgia planter, patriarch of his Highland Scots clan in America, and the ranking general from Georgia in the Continental army. Often, however, he is known simply as the man who, in a duel, mortally wounded Button Gwinnett, one of Georgia's signers of the Declaration of Independence. This biography fleshes out McIntosh considerably and, just as important, uses his life as a springboard for discussing the rapidly shifting political, social, and economic forces at work during a crucial period of Georgia's history.

The book's structure ensures that the reader fully understands each aspect before progressing on to the next area. Ormond McGill totally demystifies hypnotism, dispels many of the myths associated with it, and reveals its spellbinding secrets. A continued star of our best-sellers list
Customer Reviews:
A definite 'must-have'! .......2007-06-27
Let me first start with explaining why I bought this book. I was looking for a nice book on the subject of hypnotism, perhaps even a book with some practical tips or 'how-to's' and so I searched and searched and obviously found a LOT of titles on the internet. Since Amazon always has reviews on the more popular books, I thought I'd take a peak there. Well, I'm glad I did!
According to some of the reviews actually posted as a reaction to other books about this subject, the New Encyclopedia Of Stage Hypnotism was a very good book to have, since it's really an encyclopedia in terms of the data it provides and can really serve as one. The only thing people tended to say about this book is that it doesn't give a good 'how-to'.
Well, I'm glad I've bought this book knowing this was a common critic, because they can't be more wrong actually. The largest part is actually about 'how to hypnotize'. The book is nicely divided into two large parts, the first gives a good introduction into what to expect and what hypnotism actually is and goes on into giving a lot of insightful tips, strategies and hypnotizing scripts that have already proven to really work to me. The second part is about what has been done by others over the years and has extensive and valuable instructions about how to make your own show, take care of and prevent lawsuits and all kinds of things you simply need to know if you ever want to take hypnotizing to a professional level.
As the book says in the first part, it's important to rehearse a lot of what has been taught, really until you master it, before continuing to the next phases. I think that's why some people feel 'as if certain secrets are not explained to the reader'. Well, the real secret is simply building up experience by practice. The book does mention this, but perhaps simply not often enough.
Having said this, I think this book is also really great for beginners eventhough the price-tag might seem steep and it is quite a big book for people who want to 'skip to the parts that matter and actually hypnotize someone'. Beginners will really like this book though, because like myself in fact, although I have seen some videos in the past, I had never bought a book on this nor practiced any of this, but I'm sure you would want very accurate and complete descriptions like this book provides. I can imagine a lot of smaller books simply do not give enough information to be of any use, because everything what I have read in the book matters, you can't quite leave things out. I don't think I will buy any more books on this subject either, since basically this book almost gives you EVERYTHING there is on the subject.
All in all, I can really recommend this book to anyone who's interested in hypnotism and especially interested in trying it out for real. This book really is a wonderful way of exploring the vast world of psychology, that at times can be both extremely interesting and entertaining.
Regards,
Erik Franken
Supposed to be the Bible.......2007-01-12
It's supposed to be the Bible of Hypnotism and in a way I guess it is. It covers nearly everything, with heaps of inductions, and yes he's the Master and all that. But I still felt a little cheated. Like there were pieces of information left out - like the secrets of how and why certain things work in some of the tests and inductions. Like a woman who gives you the recipe for her famous chocolate cake but deliberately leaves out the essential secret ingredient. I think because of this, some people will try to duplicate him word for word and fail. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe this works for him and he believes he's telling everything. I've definitely seen some of the same inductions worded and explained much more effectively by Gil Boyne. There's a lot of outdated stuff too, which wouldn't work in modern times, but was kind of cute to include, like the "sleep window" publicity routine broadcast LIVE over radio. WOWEE. Cute. He covers magnetism or "power hypnotism" which a lot of other texts do not. Important to check out. It's good to have this book if you're going to be a hypnotist, but I disagree with some people who've told me this is ALL YOU NEED. It's comprehensive, but it's not the BE ALL END ALL. There are other styles and points of view out there. But DO buy it. But keep the mind open to other stuff. After all, there are some hypnotists who don't even believe in hypnosis, and still do it!
How To Avoid Dissapointment: Read This Before You Buy.......2006-07-11
Whether you will love this book...or be sadly dissapointed...depends on what you want from it. Allow me to explain: If you want to learn how to perform stage hypnosis, and are looking for someone to exaplin what to do and how to do it (an easy to follow recepie) this is NOT the book for you. Why? This book is AN ENCYCLOPEDIA, not a "How To" manual. Analogy: You go to a friend's house and feast on a delectable piece of chocolate cake. You decide it would be neat to have the ability to make such a delectable chocolate cake yourself. So you ask your friend for the recepie. How would you prefer that your friend respond:
a.) By giving you a simple, step by step recepie for making her version of chocolate cake, one that teaches you EXACTLY what to do and in what order. Then, walking you through the recepie and actually helping you make your first cake. Or...
b.) By giving you a copy of The Joy of Cooking.
If you answered "a", then you will likely find that Ormond's Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism is not for you. You will be sad to find that it does not give you a simple set of instructions to follow, but rather OVERWHELMES YOU with too much information that actually encumbers learning.
On the other hand, if you are a collector of nice expensive books and want to add this reference text to your hypnosis library, you will likely be very pleased with it. This book is what it claims to be in it's title: An Encyclopedia.
Stage hypnosis is something that you need to understand conceptually, and then begin practicing in order to master.
If you want to learn how to be a comedy stage hypnotist there are a number of first rate instructors who can teach and mentor you through live instruction or through DVD home study. One highly recommended instructor is Geoffrey Ronning. You can Google his name along with the words "Learn Stage Hypnosis" and you will find his web site.
In summary: This book is great for the collector, but a poor choice for one who wants to learn how to perform a comedy stage hypnosis show.
Too much............2006-07-10
This book is too much, and I mean that quite literally. It's too long, too heavy and the style of hypnosis it teaches has been around too long. Slow old fashioned and labourious.
I brought this to compare with my favourite book on stage hypnosis by Jonathan Chase, ' Deeper and Deeper ' available from his site or amazon.co.uk It doesn't compare. McGills tombe reads like a clinical diatribe with no humour or pazazz. And for me if stage hypnosis doesn't have that then it has nothing.
Much of this book is directly 'borrowed' from the works of Coue, Braid and Eisdale and has little or nothing entertaining in it. The routines are simply banal or unoriginal and much of the history of the art is inacurate at best.
I've no doubt that McGill was a wonderful person but his book should pass on as well. Overpriced and over written.
Bill
The best book for beginers and advanced students of the art........2006-04-06
This is the ultimate book of stage hypnosis, I have to say that in the past I studied hypnosis for about 6 years but never learn anything about stage hypnosis, 1 month after reading this book I made my first show, I was very impresed by the clear and logical instruction. 6 months later (June 2005) I have the honor to be in Las Vegas in one of the latest seminars that Ormond McGill presented and my learning curve was amazing thanks to this book.
Today I?m in the way to be a profesional stage hypnotist in my country, thanks Ormond McGill for everything.

All these In a Jar books are great. Need a gift for anyone or everyone - these are spuer suggestions.
Too thin and crispy...dry.......2006-11-20
I'm making some of these gift-in-a-jar cookies for holiday gifts. I tried the recipe before actually giving the gifts away, and I am very glad that I did. The cookies turned out very thin and crispy, as if they didn't contain enough flour or oats. I experimented in my kitchen, and by adding about 1/4 cup oats to the jar mix, the cookies turned out very delicious.
I also think that it would have been nice if the book had given you more than six of each of the gift cards.
This book is very nice, but I'd try the recipes before giving them away.

I love this book so much I bought one for a friend. I have used many idea's for our church fundraisers and they go over great!! My friend loves hers also!!
Very Informative.......2006-03-25
This cookbook is great! I will use it for gifts for those people on your list who have been kind to you and deserve a little something. With the family getting bigger, a gift out of a jar is the best gift to give because it's not pricey and someone will always know it came from the heart!

A great gift idea that is also decorative and fun.......2003-10-28
When you have an urge for cookies the easiest way to satisfy it is to grab a pack at the store. Of course, they taste better if you get a roll of cookie dough and bake them. Then again they taste even better if you get all the ingredients and actually make them from scratch, but who has time for that? Wouldn't it be great if you could just grab a box or jar with all the dry ingredients already measured so all you had to do is pour it into a bowl, add the egg and butter, mix and bake? "Gifts for the Cookie Jar" is a collection of cookie recipes that are appropriate for just this sort of gift. Each recipe has complete instructions for the correct measurement of the ingredients, the size of the jar needed and an appropriate layering order so you end up with an attractive and unique gift. After layering the ingredients into the jar, you add a decorative lid, and a small tag with the baking instructions (tags with the instructions are included in the book). Decorative and yet practical, all the gift recipient has to do is take the lid off, pour the ingredients into a mixing bowl, add the appropriate egg, butter, vanilla, or other perishable ingredient, mix and bake. Quick, easy, no searching for the recipe, no searching for ingredients, no quick trip to the store for a forgotten ingredient, and delicious homemade cookies; it's the perfect gift to give or keep available for yourself for that day when you want fresh cookies without the hassle.
Recipes include oatmeal-raisin cookies, orange sugar cookies, date and walnut cookies, malted milk crunchies, butterscotch snaps, toffee chocolate chippers, and butter pecan delights. These are really good recipes and an absolutely delightful idea. A highly recommended book, the recipes, instructions, the baking instructions tags, and the ideas for decorations make it a delight to read and create.

Book Description
A handy fan of paint chips is an indispensable tool when choosing colors for decorating projects. And, when it comes to selecting fabrics for upholstery, drapes, pillows-anything to do with textiles-fabric swatches are the necessary equivalent. They are the spark behind dazzling creative ideas, and they make deciding between, say, a sumptuous jacquard tapestry and a 1920s art deco pattern both manageable and fun.
Swatches, by noted fabric experts Dorsey Sitley Adler and Robert D. Adler, provides the ultimate guidebook on color and pattern concepts for decoration, fashion, and craft. Featuring more than 400 fabric patterns, the book includes vintage and contemporary selections from the largest textile library in the United States. The swatches are organized by pattern type, everything from stripes and polka dots to paisleys and conversational prints. A series of special color and style groupings-Seaside Splendor and Pastel Palette, for example-add an extra touch of inspiration. In addition, the book features informative text describing the origins of and typical uses for each pattern type. With a user-friendly, "small-and-chunky" format, Swatches will serve decorators, designers, and anyone interested in pattern as an invaluable resource. AUTHOR BIO: Dorsey Sitley Adler and Robert D. Adler are the founders of the Textile Design Group, the largest privately owned textile library in the United States. With a collection of more than four million pattern swatches that ranges from 19th-century historical patterns to contemporary fabrics, the Textile Design Group serves customers including fashion houses and color forecasters. This is the Adlers' first book.

Book Description
A compelling and revolutionary approach to parenting and family dynamics.
In this important book, Jesper Juul argues that today's families are at an exciting crossroads. The destructive values that governed traditional hierarchical, authoritarian families are being transformed. Instead we can choose to embrace a new set of values based on the assumption that families must be built not on authoritarian force or democratic tyranny but on dignity and reciprocity between parent and child. Children are emotionally competent -- that is, they always tell the truth about how they are feeling. Parents must begin to listen to and learn from the honest feedback they receive from their children. When we feel unhappy or dissatisfied with a situation in the family, it is almost always because we were unable to convert our loving feelings into loving behavior. To do so, we need to become fluent in what Juul calls "personal language" -- a language less concerned with "shoulds" than with our own emotional honesty.
Using examples from families in many different countries, Juul has written a book that challenges parents to see the years with their children as an exciting time of growth and development for the whole family.
Customer Reviews:
Every new parent should get this book.......2004-08-25
This book offers a very intuitive approach to child rearing. Your strongest tool as a parent is the model your own behavior provides. None of us hesitates to take credit when we can see ourselves in our children's good behavior. This book gently shows how their bad behavior is probably also a reflection of something they're seeing us do and shows ways to correct that.
One of the few liberal parenting books that offers concrete help with older kids rather than saying simply "If you raised them differently, they wouldn't be acting like this now."
No Parent Should Be Without It.......2001-10-01
There are not enough superlatives to describe how helpful this book has been to our family. With tremendous wisdom and a warm, pragmatic eye, Mr. Juul helps us redefine the ways we look at a child's behavior and our relationship to our children and ultimately, each other. This is a book that doesn't offer easy answers or 'tricks' to help in the raising of your child. This is a book that helps you see with a child's eye, hear with a child's ear, and feel with a child's heart in ways that feel so natural and obvious, you will wonder why you haven't thought of them before. But trust me, you haven't. It is a book that offers day-to-day skills along with the thinking that helps generate them, leaving the reader feeling smart and well-satisfied. This groundbreaking book should be on the shelf of all parents everywhere. If you read only one book on raising your child, this is the one.
I cannot recommend it highly enough.
A Fabulous, Important Book.......2001-07-01
Jesper Juul provides parents with such an amazing, simple, and absolutely vital approach to raising children that it rings true on every page. Some of what he suggests we as parents do is difficult - as it is against our "knee-jerk" reactions we may have learned from our parents, but all of it is right on about how we can raise confident, healthy, whole humans, right from the start. Juul suggests that we listen to our children, we trust them, respect them, and approach family as a unit all together, rather than view it as a political structure. As I read the book I was constantly saying to myself "but of course, this makes so much sense", and I was thrilled to have discovered a book that allowed me to see different possibilities with child raising. Anyone with a child will gain immensely from reading this book, seeing themselves (as I did, over and over again) in his numerous examples, and learning how to move on from there. Without reservation, I am grateful for this book and highly recommend it.
Essential reading for parents and childcare staff.......2000-11-21
This book takes a giant step forward in our knowledge of what children really need. It is based on a wealth of practical experience, but provides a profound theoretical basis for our interactions with children. And is easy to read. It has been available in Scandinavia for some time, and has been used by people I knew while living in Denmark in kindergartens and home environments with great success. (I read the Danish original.)
Fundamentally it declares that all children should be treated as unique human beings of equal value. It does not provide strategies or recipes for success. But encourages us to be ourselves when interacting with children, and to actively support them in developing their own sense of self. It explains that there is always a message in children's actions and reactions. And that it is by carefully listening to these underlying messages that we can support our children and find their true needs, and the reasons for apparent problems. In particular this applies to behaviour patterns that we may label as challenging, inappropriate or dysfunctional. The book is well-written, and reveals Jesper Juuls deep wisdom, love and understanding for both children and parents, as well as a good sense of humour and perspective.
If you have children - read this book!.......2000-11-18
This is an amazing book that will surely turn upside down any thoughts you ever had about raising children. Even though you may not agree with all the views in this book, there is so much food for thought and new ideas that you will return to this book again and again for interesting and mind blowing advice.
The book encourages parents to take FULL responsibilty for the family, but in a way that ensures that the child is respected. It offers a new way to raise kids that is not based on power (the oldfashioned way) or democracy (the way of the 70's). I highly recommend it!
