4 out of 5 stars An intimate look at a soldier .......2005-07-28

Letters Home- A Soldier's Legacy provides the reader with an inside look at the life of a soldier through the letters of one man. The battles themselves are not the focus here, rather, it is an account of how one man found the strength and courage to go on through numerous letters home to family and friends. From training, through the early campaigns in Africa through the invasion of Italy, the war unfolds in a the personal story of a single officer. To have read his letters is to have known him.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the most moving book I've ever read........1996-11-25

What a privilege to read this intelligent, courageous young soldier's letters home. It is a rare opportunity to take a first hand look at the heart, soul and mind of the young American soldier during World War II. Historically, the letters validate American spirit, intelligence and valor. Bill Roger's letters are a national treasure. They are direct evidence of our national courage, honor, heart and hope. I wish every American had a copy of this very special book

5 out of 5 stars "poignant story...".......1996-11-14

"[This] poignant story is that of so many young men whose lives ended far too soon on a battlefield. Bill Rogers' letters capture the essence of World War II and the families who were caught up in it." Marilyn Grant--Montana the Magazine of Western History

5 out of 5 stars "reflections of a time and experience".......1996-11-14

"Rogers' letters and story are reflections of a time and experience...[he] was far more inquisitive, sensitive, and willing to share his thoughts and emotions than the average GI of World War II.... [The book] exhibits a freshness and honesty that are appealing...the work flows so nicely." Timothy K. Nenninger--Reviewer, University of Oklahoma Press

      Book Description

Leonhard Rauwolf, a Bavarian physician after whom the genus of tropical plants Rauwolfia is named, was the first modern botanist to collect and describe the flora of the Near East. His own account of his travels in the Levant from 1573 to 1575, published in 1582, provides a fascinating illustration of the difficulties and dangers of early scientific field trips.

Rauwolf’s three-year journey took him to Tripoli, Aleppo, Raqqa, Baghdad, and Jerusalem. In addition to his botanical investigations, he observed and recorded his impressions of the people, customs, and sights of these Levantine trading centers. For example, he was the first European to describe the preparation and drinking of coffee, and the first European of modern times to travel the newly opened route from Baghdad to Mosul. Written from the point of view of an early Protestant pilgrim, his depictions of Jerusalem and of religious life in the Near East, both Christian and Muslim, are of particular historical value.

Dannenfeldt follows Rauwolf on his journey, presenting the observations and comments of this sixteenth-century pioneer. Wherever Rauwolf has little to say, or when contrast is needed, Dannenfeldt introduces the accounts of other Renaissance travelers, providing important background material and a more complete record of European impressions of the Muslim world during the period.

            Book Description

Are You Seeking Relief from PCOS Symptoms?
If so, you join the estimated 10 million American women who have PCOS—polycystic ovary syndrome. If you’re like most of these women, you may not know a lot about the hormone disorder, but you’re probably painfully aware of its symptoms: irregular menstrual cycles, excess facial and body hair, weight gain, and adult acne. PCOS is also a leading cause of infertility. If left untreated, the condition carries long-term risks for endometrial cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. However, with proper treatment, the syndrome can be managed.
Living with PCOS sheds light on this underreported, underdiagnosed endocrine disorder and leads women to treatment that can rid them of troublesome symptoms. The authors, both of whom have PCOS, along with a nationally-recognized physician, cover such topics as:

            • Causes of PCOS
            • Overcoming symptoms
            • Choosing a physician
            • Getting a diagnosis
            • Receiving the best medical treatment
            • Infertility and getting pregnant
            • Coping with the emotional impact of PCOS

This book is a reader-friendly tool for gaining control over PCOS.

5 out of 5 stars Basic, but one of the better PCOS books.......2007-05-27

A few years ago it was hard to find books about PCOS, and even when you did- most likely your book store did not carry them. I read a lot of PCOS books that were not very well written. SO when I saw this one I decided to see if it was at my local library. It was. I read it, and then went out and bought it. This is one of the better books for understanding PCOS. The tone is positive, unlike some other PCOS books. It is divided well, and has a lot of good information, and references.
For someone who had been newly diagnosed this is definitely the book to start with.

1 out of 5 stars This is a lame book. There is a better choice!.......2006-01-08

I got this book and another "PCOS the Hidden Epidemic" It was nearly embarassing to own this one once I'd read the other. After being diagnosed I received care from a specialist with this disorder. It isn't widely understood and most doctors are fairly ignorant about the issues of PCOS. This book simply offers some of the same poor information that standard doctors have. If you are facing this issue, I recommend the other book. It is much more indepth and answers questions this book doesn't even know to ask.

            5 out of 5 stars Have PCOS?-Read this book.......2005-09-15

My new doctor recommended this book. This book is really helpful, both for those people recently diagnosed and for those who are trying to manage their PCOS. My favorite thing about the book is the fact that the authors go through each stage of a woman's life and discuss how the PCOS can affect it. I also like the descriptions of the symptoms and the options on how to best deal with them.

2 out of 5 stars too basic, not comprehensive.......2005-08-08

I did not like this book at all since it had very limited explination of what PCOS is about and treatment options.

3 out of 5 stars Easy to understand, but not comprehensive enough... .......2005-01-15

Very simple to understand for the newly diagnosed... but if you are the slightest bit knowledgeable about PCOS, this book won't do. There are clear, but generic explanations for the hows and whys of your bodies processes, and the role of hormones and how hormone imbalance will affect your entire body. There are also some good tips on how to deal! So if you have some of the symptoms and wonder if this might be you, or if you have just been diagnosed, you can get some general information here in an easy to understand format...
If you already know much about this syndrome and are looking for answers, I would look elseware!

                Book Description

Creating a beautiful throw rug from scraps is easy enough for anyone to master. Making Rag Rugs, a collection of 15 original designs from a variety of talented rug crafters, suits the skills of any crafter, from the rawest beginner to the most sophisticated talent.

This book shows how to utilize such simple recycled ingredients as leftover fabric, old clothes, and household textiles to create these beloved and time-honored rugs. The techniques are easy to learn, the cost is minimal, and very little special equipment is needed. Each project is accompanied by a detailed "what you will need" list, step-by-step instructions with color illustrations and full-color photographs of the whole rug, and close-up detail that brings the projects to life and makes them easy to achieve. Specification boxes detail the size of the rug and the technique used.

The designs in this book are contemporary and fun. The Retro Flower Rug is inspired by the classic flower shapes used by Andy Warhol and Mary Quant in the 1960s. Lavender Field is made from soft woolen blankets dyed in shades of green and mauve to represent lavender flowers, foliage, and surrounding fields. Lavender buds are even sewn into the lining to gently scent the room. A wonderfully rustic Braided Woolly Rug is made from cream and white blankets and black and gray coat and skirt fabrics. All of the basics are covered - from preparing the rags to finishing, cleaning, and caring for the completed rugs. Once crafters have mastered the techniques of hooking, prodding, braiding, and weaving, the next step is to design their own rugs.

I've been wanting to make a braided throw rug for a long time and got this book to learn exactly how. I've had success with my project so far and in part I think it's because of the pointers you can pick up from reading this book. It's got good illustrations and clear instructions and is a real saver of time and effort. I'd recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Basic rag rug making, no costly, cumbersome, loom needed!.......2003-03-03

After admiring my mother in laws homemade rag rugs which she had purchased at a church bazaar, I sent away for a few books on the subject, certain that I would be making rag rugs in a few weeks. Unfortunately, there are several methods used to create rag rugs, and some are more complicated than others. The books which I purchased had instructions for buying or hand crafting huge wooden looms, in which to weave the rugs. I recalled my aunt making rag rugs years ago, and I never remember her having a loom in her home. I was fairly confused at this point. I put the books away on a shelf, to collect dust! Then, by chance, I spotted Clare and Juju's book in a local bookstore. After leafing through it, I realized that THIS was THE book on making rag rugs, by hand, using nothing more than a marker, burlap, a rug hook, and cloth strips! This was the method that I recalled my dear aunt using, it even features the same rugs that I had first admired at my mother in laws. If you want a simple method to follow, resulting in beautiful, sturdy, handmade rugs-THIS IS THE BOOK! By the way, I purchased this book from Amazon and their other books as well. Just beware when choosing rag rug instructional books, read carefully the method highlighted, and you won't be disappointed! Good Luck!

                    Book Description

Eighteenth-century England saw the rise of a "peculiarly English" art form -- landscape gardening -- and a corresponding change in attitudes toward the natural world. While the French, who lived under tyranny, had tightly organized, restrictive gardens, the "free" English enjoyed gardens where they were at liberty to wander. John Dixon Hunt examines eighteenth-century letters, literary and critical works, biographies, paintings, prints, and drawings to trace the gradual movement from formal regularity toward a carefully calculated naturalness.

The rose-hued nuclear family--breadwinner dad, stay-at-home mom, and two kids--held a lock on the American imagination long after it ceased to be much more than a skewed memory. Studying the paths taken by two families living in California's Silicon Valley, ethnographer Judith Stacey was struck by the ways each had reconfigured the nuclear equation. Pam Gama and Dotty Lewison had both been married homemakers raising kids, but there the similarities end. For Pam, divorce and remarriage created a network of children, an ex-spouse, and supportive friends who act as family. A self-avowed feminist whose gradual emergence into paid, sustaining work was the death knell to her first marriage, Pam saved a foundering second marriage by entering Christian counseling and renewing vows at a fundamentalist church that preached wifely submission. Dotty, despite coming from more conservative working-class stock, plunged wholeheartedly into community and feminist activism, eventually using it as a lever to first leave, and then improve, her marriage. Though the book is heavily skewed with Stacey's political sensibilities, it still digs deep to sketch the convoluted lives and contradictory philosophies of real people. First published in 1991, Brave New Families remains fresh and engaging today because it speaks to the dissonance between hard-line feminism and true-life stories. --Francesca Coltrera

                        Book Description

Judith Stacey has added a new preface to her classic study of how the traditional nuclear family has been supplanted by a variety of new relationships that are not defined by blood ties and traditional gender roles.

                            Book Description

This tender and moving memoir by the great Yiddish writer Chaim Gradetakes us to the very source of his widely praised novels and poems--the city of Vilna, the "Jerusalem of Lithuania," during the years before World War II. Centered on the figure of Grade's mother, Vella simple, pious, hard-working--this is a richly detailed account of the ghetto of his youth, of the lives of the rabbis, the wives, the tradesmen, the peddlers, and the scholars. We see Vella, desperate after losing her husband, become a fruit-peddler, struggling to survive poverty and to remain true to her faith in the face of human pettiness and cruelty. We follow Grade as he walks in the footsteps of his scholar father, a champion of enlightenment; we see him entering marriage, and his mother finding some peace of mind in a marriage of her own all of this in a world recalled with extraordinary physical and emotional intensity. Then, World War II. The partition of Poland between the Soviet Union and Germany is followed by the new German invasion of June 1941.Grade--believing, as do so many others, that the Nazis pose a danger chiefly to able-bodied men like himself--flees into Russia. In his travels on foot and by train he meets a fascinating, kaleidoscopic array of characters: the disillusioned Communist Lev Kogan; the durachok, or simpleton, a young prisoner who, mistaken for a German spy, is shot when he jumps from a train; the once-prosperous lawyer, Orenstein, who virtually becomes a beggar, dies and is buried by strangers in a remote Central Asian village. With the war's end, Grade returns to Vilna--to find the ghetto in ruins, to learn that his wife and his mother have gone to their deaths--and he is left with nothing but memories. But it is here, amid the devastation of a people, that he finds the compulsion and the passion to commit to paper the world that has been lost.

5 out of 5 stars A melancholy look at a place & way of life that is no more........1999-10-11

Mr. Grade paints with words a lively, personal look at Jewish life in the Jerusalem of Lithuania in the twilight of its existence. "My Mother's Sabbath Days" is written in a way that enables the reader to feel as if he or she is in Vilna with Mr. Grade. We share the burden of day to day life, the joy and peace of celebrating the Sabbath, and an unforgettable journey with the simple Jews of Vilna, right before the bloody tide of the Shoah swept into history this unique way of life in Eastern Europe.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book, a work of art, much more than a memoir.......1998-05-14

Grade is a brooding writer, but one who also writes with grace and humor. "My Mother's Sabbath Days" is a memoir in the same way that Jorge Semprun's "Literature or Life" is a memoir, or Proust's "Remembrance of Things Past." It is an artful recreation of a way of life, that is to say, a work of fiction in the most profound sense, a work that reproduces not only the surface of reallity, but its inner depths. Grade's reputation still lags far behind his deserts. He is certainly the equal of Isaac Bashevis Singer, but he recreates the world of Polish Jewry with less mockery and with a more brooding sense of tragic loss.
