Book Description
Major McKinley is the first complete account of the Civil War service of President William McKinley, the last of the Civil War veterans to reach the White House and the only one who served in the ranks. McKinley enlisted as a private in the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry (later commanded by another future president, Rutherford B. Hayes) and was the regiment's commissary sergeant when his bravery at the Battle of Antietam led to a commission and an assignment to Hayes's military staff.
McKinley regarded the end of slavery as the significant outcome of the war and valued the contributions of the black soldiers in the Union army. After the war, as a young lawyer and congressman, he defended the rights of freedmen and did so long after others had tired of the cause. He also reached out to former Confederate soldiers in an effort to help restore unity to a divided country. This initiative eventually overshadowed and diminished his advocacy of civil rights.
Drawing on a wide variety of sources, including McKinley's own papers and the diaries and letters of men who served with him, this book presents a new picture of McKinley as a soldier and provides a fresh appreciation of his later life as a veteran in politics.

Book Description
The public perception of the making of the atomic bomb is yet an image of the dramatic efforts of a few brilliant male scientists. However, the Manhattan Project was not just the work of a few and it was not just in Los Alamos. It was, in fact, a sprawling research and industrial enterprise that spanned the country from Hanford in Washington State to Oak Ridge in Tennessee, and the Met labs in Illinois.
The Manhattan Project also included women in every capacity. During World War II the manpower shortages opened the laboratory doors to women and they embraced the opportunity to demonstrate that they, too, could do "creative science." Although women participated in all aspects of the Manhattan Project, their contributions are either omitted or only mentioned briefly in most histories of the project. It is this hidden story that is presented in Their Day in the Sun through interviews, written records, and photographs of the women who were physicists, chemists, mathematicians, biologists, and technicians in the labs.
Authors Ruth H. Howes and Caroline L. Herzenberg have uncovered accounts of the scientific problems the women helped solve as well as the opportunities and discrimination they faced. Their Day in the Sun describes their abrupt recruitment for the war effort and includes anecdotes about everyday life in these clandestine improvised communities. A chapter about what happened to the women after the war and about their attitudes now, so many years later, toward the work they did on the bomb is included.
Customer Reviews:
Good idea, badly flawed execution.......2002-12-21
Although attempts to profile female contributions to great undertakings are appreciated, ýTheir day in the sun,ý is fundamentally flawed by the authorsý bias toward academic, primarily physicist, researchers and by the authorsý failure to understand the mechanisms and downstream effects of Manhattan Project technologies. This has lead to a poorly organized document that spends pages on the contributions of a truck driver, secretary, or clerk whose husband was a Los Alamos or Chicago Met Lab physicist while ignoring the contributions of the tens of thousands of women who worked at other facilities, often in professional scientific or engineering capabilities. This is partially due to the uniqueness and historic significance of the atom bomb. However, other successes growing out of the Manhattan Project touch our lives every day: the medical isotopes that delineate a blocked heart artery, the separations that make good vaccines and new plastics possible, and the nuclear power reactors that remain our cleanest electric energy generators.
The authors indicate that the limitations on their research imposed by the availability of published documents or potential interviewees were responsible for their omissions. However, in preparing reviews of the technology developed at a variety of Manhattan Project sites, my working group found reasonable access to both people and written records. Also, epidemiological researchers who have evaluated clinical effects, mortality, and morbidity of Manhattan project staff have been able to contact significant portions of former workers. Recent epidemiological studies of ýfemaleý illnesses (e. g., breast cancer) make the omission of the bulk of the Manhattan Projectýs female staff for reasons other than bias or intellectual laxness difficult to understand.
Woman and the Atomic Bomb.......2000-01-14
This work chronicles the role that women played in the Manhatten project during World War II in the fields of mathematics, chemistry, physics, health biology, etc. It also provides an interesting account of the role of women in the physics discoveries during the early twentieth century which made the development of nuclear weapons possible.
This book is especially valuable since this information has not been treated in any kind of systematic way in any previous historical accounts of the Manhatten project.

Customer Reviews:
THIS BOOK IS GREAT!!!.......2007-07-01
OK, I'm a guy and trying to get over my ex of less then 8 months being with her, it has taken me over 6 months to try to move on.
I went to the Library to just search for something AGAIN as ALWAYS but this time the book on the shelf stood out. Never seen it before. Something was telling me to get it.
I could not put this book down when I got home.I read it cover to cover in one evening. The small work Exercises in this book are really great, I mean REALLY GREAT AND FAST to do and you can remember for every day use. I like the "SELF-ESTEEM BOOSTER" and " HOW TO FALL OUT OF LOVE". The next day I had to order it on line. I took notes for keeping. And when I get my book it will be highlighted alot on things to remember.
I have bought many on line e-books on getting over your mate, and things like that, but this book is really great to get. Don't waste you money on E-books out there. Put your money on this book first. It may not be the the best for you, but it moved me, made me cry sometimes reading it, but it was for the good. GET THE BOOK!!!
Right time, right book, lucky me.......2007-05-09
During the two months after my break up, I went through a roller coaster ride. My emotions were everywhere, and worst of all, when I felt better, I always feared that it was just my imagination and that I would soon feel worse again. I got a lot of support from my friends and family, but inside my brain painful images that reminded me of my past would pop up involuntarily from time to time.
The biggest obstacle this book has helped me overcome is related to the fact that one of its authors is a hypnotist. I have only read half way through the book, but I believe I have found everything that I needed already. The techniques they presented in the first half uses a semi-hypnotic sort of way to help you manipulate and recode your memories so that you can change your way of thinking - from the root. Ever since following the instructions in the book, I really do feel like I was able to stop thinking about my ex and stop feeling pained.
I think most books helping you deal with break ups are shallow. Many books are just out to make a buck on someone who is desperate for help. This book is much better than the other break up book I bought, but books alone cannot help you get over a heartbreak. I would recommend this to someone who is looking for that last thing to help them completely get over their break up.
Some Good Advice, But Not Totally Realistic.......2007-04-29
Although this book contains some helpful information, I wouldn't go so far as to say that it lived up to the author's claims of being able to "stop the pain of a broken heart in its tracks and bring about lasting improvements..." in my life, anyway. But then, maybe my situation is a bit different from those which Drs. McKenna and Willbourn reported.
That's not to say, however, that it won't work for others. Obviously, all our situations are different; consequently others will be affected or respond to this information much differently. But then, while I want the pain to stop, I'm not willing to stop loving my ex, which is where the good doctors' techniques ultimately lead the reader. Granted, falling out of love is the ultimate goal for many who wish to get over their exes. But at the same time, for many others - such as myself - it is not.
I also found their advice on eliminating jealousy and obsession by utilizing a technique to `white it out' not only rather simplistic, but unrealistic. For some - both men and women - being able to let go of either obsession or jealousy is hardly as easy as pretending that it can be erased. Just like love, jealousy and obsession are two very powerful emotions that take time to work through. This, I would posit, is where the utilization of Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), hypnosis, retraining and reframing are, in my humble opinion, more likely to work; along with a good dose of cognitive behavior therapy.
The reference to New Orleans Gestalt therapist, Anne Teachworth's theory, that we learn to relate to significant others based on the relational interactions we observed in our parents, resonated strongly. Although, certainly, there are often other factors involved, but there's no arguing (and quite a few studies in support of the contention) that - for the most part - children learn by emulating what they see and hear. Therefore, it only stands to reason that we are most likely going to carry these learned behaviors with us into adulthood and into our own relationships.
Once again, although the doctors offered some good advice, I was also struck by the fact that an equal amount of advice seemed insensitive and aimed at women while not taking into consideration that women don't think or respond similarly. Case in point: "Your past is your job to deal with. It is not your new partner's job. So rather than foist it on them, work through it with a friend or a therapist." `Foist'? This is the way most men think. It is not, generally, the way women think. Many women, in fact, are usually all too willing to hear about their partner's past issues if their partner is willing to share that part of their life with them. Additionally, in some cases this advice is not feasible, such as when one partner truly has no one else to talk to and is in dire need of talking about a situation that is potentially life-threatening. It appears that chivalry must, most certainly, be dead.
So...how does one mend a broken heart? I never quite reached the point by the end of the book where I felt that my broken heart had been mended by the advice offered. In my opinion, this can only be done by learning to love oneself. Because by loving ourselves we realize that we are deserving of love from others and that we deserve more than a partner who has chosen not to remain in our lives. Only then can one learn to let go of the pain of a broken relationship and go on to truly love another.
And, in case you're wondering...it took reading this book for me to see that I really didn't need anyone to tell me how to let go of the pain of my broken heart. The answer was always within.
Wonders for my daughter.......2006-04-21
I got this book from the library for my daughter. It did wonders for her after her boyfriend of 3 years broke up with her without warning. She had lost weight, was going to a counselor, her grades suffered, and she couldn't stop crying. This book helped her more than anything else. She's a very visual person and the book gave her visual exercises to do; and also practical things to do like changing your habits or changing the furniture around. She showed it to the counselor she was going to at college and the counselor liked it so much, she bought it to keep for other students to look at. I had to bring the book back to the library, but my daughter wanted to have a copy of her own, so here I am at Amazon getting her her own copy. This is a great book for anyone going through heartbreak or for anyone who wants to help someone in that situation.
Finally , REAL help.......2005-12-18
OK the wallowing in misery, self-pity, and denial is SO over. How I loved this book! I have been struggling mightily in a heartbreaking relationship with a really cold man - thinking he was something else, and thinking there were real feelings and a soul in there if I could only peel that onion back one more layer. It just got worse and worse until I hated myself as much or more as I hated him. Obsession, compulsive behavior, self-torture - what a waste of time and life! And who wants to win the "I hate you more" contest anyway? Hate is the worst! Over the years I think I've read every single "breakup recovery" books, some more helpful than others - but most of them have the same advice. "Rally your girlfriends, stay busy, excercise more, know it will eventually get better!" Yeah, whatever. The advice helps, but it really just distracts you from the pain, rather than helping you truly heal and throw out the pain for good. What's cool about this book is how it provides tools and excercises (I know, but these are really good tools and exercises.) you can use immediately, anywhere / anytime to change the way you feel and see your situation through visualization and self-hypnosis. It also had very keen insight into human behavior - both yours and others. If you're ready to pick yourself up and really move on, this is the one I would recommend. Good luck!

Book Description
After 10 years and 14,000,000 copies sold, the world's bestselling plant book gets a beautiful freshening up, in a companion volume filled with today's most popular plants and up-to-date techniques.
This is what gardeners have been waiting for and will absolutely have to own: the companion to the blockbuster guide they love and have depended on for years. Since the publication of the original House Plant Expert, gardening has evolved and tastes have changed: here, on every lushly illustrated page, is cutting-edge information and the latest trends in gardening. In addition to a widely expanded A to Z of plants, and an in-depth discussion of today's most popular species (such as bonsai, orchids, bromeliads, and herbs), there's inspiring information on a really revolutionary idea: roomscaping, or the art of creating attractive, stylish features in the garden by combining one or more plants with non-living items. Gardeners will see inspiring examples of water and glass gardens and multiplant containers, and even learn how to make a solitary plant stand out.
It may have taken a while to arrive, but The House Plant Expert Two is proof positive that good things come to those who wait!
Customer Reviews:
House Plant Expert.......2007-08-26
If I had known all the measurements in it were in metric only I would have never bought it. I am very disapointed--the book has no practical value for me whatsoever. Amazon needs to specifiy when a book is in metric only.
Wonderful easy plant guide.......2007-07-08
These Plant Expert books are really wonderful and it's very easy to look up different kinds of plants and also learn about plan problems.
Large Selection.......2007-05-12
Large selection of plants with their care. Nice photos of plants. Nothing on diseases of specific plants included.
very concise.......2007-01-16
I love how this book is arranged. Photos and/or drawings of each plant. Short and to the point information that is easy to find on the page. Secrets to success and special problems. The information is useful, understandable and interesting for the skilled plantsman without being boring and technical to the beginner. A must have for both.
Great advice, but you need volume one too.......2007-01-09
The biggest drawback to this book is that you must have book one also, else you won't have the complete volume of information you need for your houseplants.

Book Description
the Plant is a gripping tale of the near future, on a global scale, and follows the story of two friends - Johnson, the businessman, and Smith, the dreamer, both staunch supporters of Marijuana and Hemp legalization - who had founded an activist magazine in the 1990s.
Smith had become disillusioned with the seemingly unwinnable struggle, and disappointed with American society and its resistance to change, even when it means dramatic improvements to the economy and environment. He moves to Venezuela where he believes he can spend the rest of his life in peace and quiet, living off the land, and forgetting about the failing push toward a better world. Meanwhile, his friend, Johnson, continues to fight against insurmountable odds, adding a small team of bright, ambitious go-getters to his cause. With growing global terrorism and a near-World War at hand, federal and public fears due to the confusion between Marijuana and Industrial Hemp, and increasing and deadly opposition to the battles for Marijuana law reform, they truly have their work cut out for them.
Nearly two decades later, Smith returns from the depths of seclusion to discover that the world is nothing like what he left behind. What has happened is not only shocking, but, for him, life-altering.
From the Author, Dan L Dudgeon
"The story within the Plant spans over twenty years, and encompasses the recent past, the present, and the possibilities for the future. And although the cultivation of Industrial Hemp as a natural resource is not my only desire for the future of America, and inevitably the entire planet, I feel it is a very significant one.
The question posed by the book is: Can one plant bring about all the positive results promised by the research of the past, and the present struggles of so many Hemp supporters? The answer is of course my own personal perspective. But it is a great surprise, and you will have to read it to find out!"
From Skunk Magazine
Gas prices are ballooning ridiculously, the environment is turning to shit, the Middle East crisis is escalating to biblical proportions, prohibition has brought the War on Drugs to a head, and it seems global nuclear destruction is nigh. Yeah, so what else is new?
The plot of the Plant reads like a CNN ticker... Set in the not-too-distant future, Dan L Dudgeon seamlessly pieces together history, current events, and conjecture, making the plot that much more plausible.
Smith, the disillusioned anti-hero, is dragged back from the jungles of South America by his cannabis activist buddy from days gone by to help him lead a new revolution with the power of his mighty pen. A sweet love story is dispersed throughout between our protagonist and Annalisa, an ex-goth, gung-ho ingénue of the pro-hemp rag The H.E.L.P. Chronicles. She's no Mamakind, but I saw much of myself in her eager-beaver attitude. --Mamakind, Senior Editor

Written from the unique perspective of a clinician who has herself survived a mild brain injury, Brainlash offers important tips that will make the road ahead easier.
Customer Reviews:
For families and friends of brain trauma patients.......2002-05-16
This book is a must have for patients and families of brain trauma. It clearly states symptoms and stages of the trauma. It tells you what to expect. It isn't a medical description but a patient to patient description in terms that anyone can comprehend. It is one excellent book. Thank you Gail Denton for writing this book.
Recovery begins with understanding.......2002-04-08
This book is a guide to sanity for those who have experienced mild brain injury, as I have. In the fall of 2000, I suffered an accidental fall and spent the following 15 months in a struggle to recover my 'real self". With the aid of this book, I am now fully functional again and able to cope with the minor relapses. I strongly recommend this book to those who suffer, their friends and caregivers.
Brainlash reviewed by a head injury patient........2001-09-22
I have read a number of books on the subject as I am a person who has a brain Injury. This book, more than any other I have read, has been extremely helpful to me. First of all because it explains so well what happens to the sufferer, both physiologically as well as emotionally. The book also gives lots of possitive suggestions for coping as well as for healing.
I fulheartedly recommend this book for both patients as well as their family and friends. It gives much understanding into the issue of brain injury and also much encouragement. It is an uplifting book, at least for me it was!
Thank you Gail Denton.
GETTING BETTER STARTED WITH READING THIS BOOK.......2000-08-07
If you have suffered from a mild traumatic brain injury, as I have,"Brainlash" was the starting point of recovery for me. And I thank God for this book & Gail Denton every day. I quote a paragraph from the book that sums up the point I was at when I started to read BrainLash. "Brain injury races undetected, underdiagnosed, and undertreated through our society." "Between the medical professions ( untrained to recognize it), the insurance community ( unwilling to pay for it ), and the legal sector (unable to represent the loss or grasp the consequences), the mildly brain injured individual has little to rely on and less to go on." And NO!!!! your not going crazy, It just seems that way. The Book is easy to read and finially puts a name on, fully defines, and gives solutions to the symptoms feelings and thoughts that a brain injured person is experiencing but dosen't know why. It is also important to have your family and friends read it so they can try to understand what you are going thru even when you can't understand it yourself. From the resource section of the book I highly recomend that you consider attending the Sensory learning institute and having cranio-sacral therapy. It has been aprox 18 months since my accident and although I feel full recovery is obtainable, it is a long journey and my journey didn't start until I read this book and used its resources.
First aid for survivors.......2000-07-14
When my daughter suffered a severe concussion in a car accident on Father's Day, June 18, 2000, I was desperate for information about what to expect, what to hope for, and what to accept about her condition. I surfed the internet and chatrooms looking for information, and many "survivors" of mild brain trauma and their family members unanimously recommended this book. I bought it, and found in it an invaluable comfort and resource. It has been a difficult month, but it looks like my daughter will have a full recovery, at least in part thanks to the information we found in Brainlash. Recommended!

Book Description
Born in Transylvania at the turn of the century, Bella Cohen Spewack arrived on the streets of New York's Lower East Side when she was three. At 22, while working as a reporter with her husband in Europe, she wrote this memoir of her early years, which she never chose to publish. The publication of
Streets more than 70 years later recovers a remarkable voice and revivifies a lost world.
With a sense of the telling anecdote, the young Bella describes the sights and sounds of her neighborhood, and introduces a wide array of people as her family moves annually to save rent or find a still cheaper apartment. Her mother works as a live-in domestic, then takes on sewing and eventually boarders, as well as a new and unfriendly husband. Bella's world also includes two younger brothers, one of whom needs constant nursing.
Streets includes the story of Bella's high school years-her mother was determined to make "a lady" of her daughter and would not allow her to work in a factory-and ends before she meets and marries Sam Spewack. At once street-smart and unsentimental Bella is a sturdy American hero who overcomes life's obstacles in a world that will later welcome her as a celebrated author.

I love that book!.......2001-07-22
this is my favorite book. if anyone has similar taste to me then i highly recommend them to read it.
i'm going to describe it as a story of a girl growing into a women on the streets of the lower east side of manhattan. she tells of different jobs and the boarders that her and her mother board to help pay the rent. its very hard for me to describe becuase of 2 reasons 1) you can't describe it you have to read it 2)i read it a year ago.
i was getting so into reading it that i never wanted it to end. to last forever. so i tried to do so by reading a limit of pages each day. i live in NYC and by reading the book i had grown a stronger love for the city and thats another reason i loved the book. i also loved the stories she has of her childhood. the down fall of the book? well, it was and made me sad. it was kinda a depressing book. you now. like a heart-acher.
it was indeed a pleasure to read and in the future, if you do read it, i hope you enjoy.
thats my review! i hope i helped!

Recommended to students of Jewish history & women's studies........2000-04-04
Streets: Memoir Of The Lower East Side was written in 1922 and published for the first time in 1955. This remarkable memoir of a young Jewish girl's coming of age in the tenement slums of New York's Lower East Side is gritty, candid, vivid, engaging, sensitive, and streetsmart. Bella Spewack overcame obstacles of gender, background, and religious discriminations to succeed as a celebrated journalist, playwright, and screenwriter. Streets is highly recommended, articulate reading and will prove of special interest to students of American Jewish history, Women's Studies, and biographies reflecting the triumph of the human spirit over social and cultural barriers.
The early life of an unusual woman, with comedy and sadness.......1999-09-09
This is a coming of age story depicting the harrowing early life of an extraordinary talent. Told with an amazing eye for detail and a highly developed sense of humor, this is one of the most moving autobiographies I have read. Bella Spewack writes of her thirst for knowledge and determination. In later life Bella invented the Girl Scout cookie, became a noted journalist and wrote successful plays and movies. Streets tells of the difficult circumstances of her childhood.
Fascinating, historical review.......1999-08-06
This book was written by a very eloquent author in 1922. At 23years of age, she carefully details her struggles of growing up inpoverty on the lower east side of Manhattan. This is one of a few books that deals with the difficulties faced by immigrants of to New York around the turn of the century. Her battles are those of a poor, Jewish girl growing up without a father in tenement housing. I thouroughly recommend this book to Jews, feminists and historians.
