      Book Description

"The Father of Russian Aviation" - was how Professor Nikolai Zhukovsky (1847-1921) was named in a decree of the Council of People's Commissars signed by Lenin and issued on December 2, 1920, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his scientific activity. Indeed, Zhukovsky's contributions to Russian aviation were exceedingly great. He worked out important theories on which the calculations of modern aircraft are based; he trained a large number of qualified aviation engineers and research workers for Soviet aviation; he founded leading research and educational aviation institutions. An outstanding mathematician, Zhukovsky possessed exceptional ability in solving complex engineering problems.

His researches covered a vast range of subjects. He contributed to science over 180 works dealing with the most varied problems of science and engineering. With equal success he conducted research work on problems of pure mathematics, theoretical mechanics, astronomy, ballistics, building mechanics, hydraulics, aerodynamics, the theory of the airplane, and more.

Many of Zhukovsky's theories have won a permanent place in world science and are successfully applied by engineers throughout the world. His work presented a happy combination of theory and practice, and his findings always constituted a new step forward in the development of the given branch of science. Of particular significance for modern aerohydrodynamics was Zhukovsky's famous theorem of the lift of the wing, which he formulated in 1906.

It is bread and not butter that is the enemy in Dr. Atkins's popular and controversial low-carbohydrate/high-fat diet. In In Atkins for Life, he continues his decades-long crusade against low-fat eating. Atkins argues that low-fat meals are high-carbohydrate missiles, causing the body to produce excess insulin, which then produces fat, slows down metabolism, and tips the scale. Instead, he urges readers to stop counting calories and fat grams and start counting carbs to rev up their metabolism and burn fat as an energy source. The question of whether "ketosis," the fat meltdown he advocates, is healthy or harmful is a central question of this sequel to the bestselling Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. Packed with recipes, menus, carbohydrate counters, and strategies for staying with the plan, this book is less clear than its predecessor. It veers back and forth between how to begin and how to maintain "a controlled carbohydrate lifestyle." It is also more promotional, with photos of satisfied slim folks and pitches for the branded Atkins products. Still, with its pages of testimonials and studies about weight loss, lowered cholesterol, and increased energy, it is hard to argue with Atkins's results. He puts his proof in the pudding. --Barbara Mackoff

4 out of 5 stars Back to the Tried & True.......2007-04-10

I am going back to Atkins again. I was on this diet, dropping 30 pounds. My doctor said it was dangerous, to get off. After gaining back the weight,(plus a few pounds more) I tried: Weight Watchers and Calories & Fat counting. I have just maintained a 10 pound up & down for three years. After reading that the Adkins diet was most effective in taking weight off, I am going back. I ordered the book because I threw my old book away.

5 out of 5 stars Long term low carbs.......2007-03-31

I'm not sure about the health detriments, but this diet just didn't work for me. In order for it to work properly you need to watch your intake and not over-do it. This isn't a magic diet.

Excellent book, easy to follow. I have lost 51 pounds following Atkin's diet. This book will help me keep it off.

1 out of 5 stars Something Fishy Here.......2004-06-08

I purchased "Half Scratch Magic" to use for family meals, and have been pretty disappointed. The recipes look very tasty (to read), but do not generally cook up as well as it seems they should. Novice cooks be warned: the authors -really- love fishy flavors, and seldom tell how strong the fish will be in the finished recipe. Also, they often give misleading or insufficient directions (such as adding broth to "deglaze" when there was so much liquid in the cooking that no browning occurred to "deglaze", or occasionally leaving out cooking temperatures).

My number one complaint with this book: The "quick and easy meals" selling point is wildly inaccurate, because the authors fail to allow for prep time. The authors assure you that these meals will whip up in a jiffy. The recipe I made last night, "Beef Curry", called for the chopping of one large onion, two large tomatoes, two garlic cloves, and two tablespoons of fresh minced ginger. It took me an hour just to do all of that chopping, plus 20 minutes to cook. 1 hour 20 minutes is not a jiffy.

My recommendation: get it from the library and try a few recipes before you buy it to see if this cookbook is for you.

3 out of 5 stars Useful (especially if you have a sweet tooth).......2003-03-22

There are a lot of interesting ideas in this book for a quick but novel meal. I've tried some and plan to try many more. Be warned, however, that a fairly large number of the main recipes are pretty sweet, using products like chutney for flavoring. I could have done with fewer of these, but that's what makes horse races.

5 out of 5 stars Get Delicious Dinners in a Hurry.......2003-03-22

Linda West Eckhardt and Katherine West DeFoyd have another winner with half-scratch magic. They offer recipes that are easy, quick, and affordable to prepare but sophisticated in taste for today's cook frantic to get a nutritious, delicious dinner on the table in a hurry.

It has recipes that are appealing for a family with children or for a dinner party. The dishes contain flavors from across the globe taking them from the ordinary.

Many recipes can also be adapted to what you have in the freezer. I used a roasted leg of lamb in place of "pan-grilled rosemary lamb chops on white beans with tomato." After roasting the lamb I removed the fat and added all the other ingredients from the recipe. It was a hit.

The price fits into most budgets which makes it a book you won't feel guilty buying for yourself or to give as a present. What a marvelous gift for a bridal shower. If a bride can't cook from half-scratch magic she shouldn't be getting married.

5 out of 5 stars Hands down, the best foaling attendant book.......2007-07-22

As far as I'm concerned, this book is required reading for all foaling attendants. Thank you Dr. Karen Hayes for writing it. The book covers a single topic, and does it better than any of the other foaling guides I've read (and I've read quite a few). Those other foaling guides are on a bookshelf; this is the book that goes in the foaling kit! It has saved our farm from disaster on more than one occasion. Dr. Hayes clearly, calmly and concisely communicates the important facts and techniques the foaling attendant needs to know. The detailed diagrams make all the difference in illuminating exactly what is going on at each stage of parturition. Detailed descriptions of what's normal and what's not, techniques for resolving problems before they become critical, and advice on what to attempt yourself and when to call the vet are invaluable. You will find other fine books about breeding, mare care and foal care, but this is the best book on the actual process of protecting and caring for your mare when it's time to deliver her foal. Dr. Hayes' more general horse care [...].is also highly recommended.

I would like to have more information regarding what to do next. The information was good, and the illustrations are helpful, but I needed to buy another book to help with what to do with the foal once it had arrived.

This book was shipped quickly and just in time....I had about 5 reading days before my first foal was born. I highly recommend this book to all breeders.

                    3 out of 5 stars Not for Brand-New Beginners.......2004-12-08

For beginners, I would rate the book 2 stars. For more experienced winemakers, this would be a fantastic reference book.

After reading the reviews here, I purchased this book, to be our very first book to tell us how to make wine. At the same time, I was trying to purchase winemaking equipment as a Christmas gift for my husband and was hoping this book would help me know what to buy. The book has a lot of recipes and great details, but not a really simple step-by-step "how-to" for the person who knows nothing at all about winemaking. The 10 minute free video that came with the equipment I bought showed more step-by-step than this book.

                    There is no index.

I think my husband would take one look at this book and say "Wow, I don't have the time to read this and figure it all out!" It leaves me with the impression that winemaking is difficult, tricky, and time-consuming.

Example: When I was trying to figure out what corks to buy, it does tell to use 1 1/3 inch corks for wines you intend to drink within 12-18 months and 1 3/4 inch ones for those to be aged longer. But that's all it tells. It doesn't tell me whether to buy straight ones or tapered ones, #7, #8, #9, etc.

I am now going to buy First Steps in Winemaking, hoping that will have some simpler answers.

5 out of 5 stars New to Winemaking? So am I........2001-02-20

A friend over seas, living in a country where one must make their own, recommended this gem to me last year. Since then, although possessed of no previous knowledge or experience, I succeeded rather easily in making good wines. I also compared the wine from the recipes in Anderson book with highly recommended kits from Vino Del Vida. Although much easier and quicker, the kit product, while very satisfactory according to those who have tasted it, did not measure up to the superior wine made from Anderson's recipes.

Practical suggestions for equipment, where to purchase it and techniques are explained in a straightforward fashion. With a relative small cash outlay and this book, you can be well on your way to an interesting hobby.

4 out of 5 stars Great 'recipe book' for beginning winemakers.......2001-01-30

Some books are meant to be read, and others are meant to be used. This one definitely falls into the second category. Spiral bound, this falls neatly open to whichever wine recipe you are currently working on. There are recipes for apricot wine, kiwi fruit wine, ruby port, sparkling wine, and everything in between.

There are also photos and descriptions of winemaking equipment, explanations of how to fortify wine, troubleshooting techniques, and much more.

True, not all ingredients are readily available everywhere. Many recipes require trial and error before they become perfect for your palate. That's the same for any recipe, though. Find out what raw materials you have available, open the book to the recipes which match your fruits, and have at it. You'll find that using this book as a springboard, you'll soon be amazing your friends and pleasing your palate with a product made right in your own basement.

3 out of 5 stars 4/99 A good beginner book and reference for the amateur........1999-04-23

I'd like to clarify by suggesting 4 stars for a beginner interested in beginning home winemaking and 3 stars for an amateur home winemaker. Regarding beginners interested in winemaking, this is a good starter book with explanations for the ingredients you're using without too much science getting in the way. I feel that this book should be used in conjunction with other books (perhaps Joy of Home Winemaking) to give potential hobbyists a better feel for winemaking. There are numerous recipes for fruits, berries, vinifera & hybrid grapes, and straight concentrates. The reservations I hold against the book is that I suspect it was written more for the west coast hobbyist with better access to some ingredients (ie. certain grape concentrates, brands of yeasts and acids), but that shouldn't prevent anyone from producing wine with this book. (3 stars) Amateurs already familiar with a couple of batches should find this a useful reference because of the variety of recipes and equipement techniques & usage.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative but full of recipe errors and omissions........1997-11-05

I've been studying the book now for a couple months and am both impressed with the detail and dissapointed in the inaccuracies. The apple and pear recipies I've tried were way off on volumes and the scrumpy recipe was literally impossibe. You may need some experience to know how to change some of the recipes to make them workable. Other- wise there is wealth of good info and I recommend the book very much in spite of its weaknesses.

Psychologist Janie Ward has written an insightful and brave book about parenting African American teenagers. The Skin We're In addresses the gap between "black baby boomer parents" and their hip-hop children, offering sound strategies to help adolescents gain confidence about their racial identity and to recognize and resist racism. Ward's portrait of parenting in the post civil rights era is fair and unflinching. She suggests that the new racism ("being pulled over for driving black") demands a new approach. Resistance used to be in the street, but now it's in the mind, says Ward. As she explains, "The African American family can provide a safe and loving context--a home space--in which our adolescents can question the social inequities they see." Ward frames healthy resistance to racism in terms of four habits of mind (name it, read it, oppose it, replace it) that can be learned and practiced in the family circle. This model is illustrated with vivid, moving anecdotes and annotated parent-teen dialogues. Her approach urges parents to combine elements of the dominant culture and traditional black culture by drawing upon the rich legacies of social activism and spiritual and folk wisdom.

Ward also addresses challenges on the street and at school for teens including coping with sex, friendship, materialism and low expectations at school. Two compelling chapters focus on gender issues, for example, how to steer boys away from the "tough guy" or "player" stereotypes and how to guide girls to discover their unique beauty in our "light, long, and lean" culture. In Ward's view, race defines the parenting process for African American families. An illuminating guide to creating a confident and vibrant racial identity, The Skin We're In offers parents and educators counsel that is both streetwise and spiritual. --Barbara Mackoff

                        Book Description

Shepherding children through the demanding years of adolescence can be a struggle for any parent. But black parents must also help their children confront the psychological fallout of racism. With this in mind, Dr. Janie Ward, who spent fifteen years researching the moral and psychological development of African-American boys and girls, offers parents a comprehensive four-step program -- Name it, Read it, Oppose it, Replace it -- that provides strategies for healthy resistance to negative social influences and complacency in children throughout the formative years. Ward offers parents advice on such topics as:

5 out of 5 stars Guidelines For Parenting African American Youth.......2002-03-09

The Skin We're In is the most compelling book I've read about race and raising children. The author, Janie Victoria Ward, Ed.D. has written her fourth book about raising emotionally strong, socially smart and spiritually connected African American youth. Ward spent years researching the moral and psychological development of African American boys and girls. Through her research she conducted a study of actual interviews and discussions with African American Youth and their parents. What she wanted to know was how did the tasks of parenting relate to the forces of racism. Her study and discussions is the basis for this book.

Beginning with the introduction we're given insight into Ward's comprehensive four-step program-Name It, Read It, Oppose It, Replace It, which are strategies used to promote healthy resistances to negative social influences that affect our African American children. In chapter four we're given detailed information about Ward's comprehensive four-step program. Each step is defined and followed by written scripts taken during her interviews and discussions with the youths and their parents.

Ward tackles some of the tough issues that confront our African American youth today such as dating, peer pressure and racism. What is interesting to note, is Ward's practical advice that she offers to parents on topics such as "Teaching our children to love themselves" and "Stressing racial pride". In no way does she sound preachy. She continuously stresses how important it is for parents to talk to their children about racial matters. One such way is to share your own stories of resistances with your children. This one point is like a beam of light that takes you through the entire book.

Ward brilliantly delivers her powerful comprehensive four-step resistance model with ease. Her message is clear and not written in a textbook style. Her writing is empowering from beginning to end.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is a good resource book. What grabbed me was the resource guide in the back of the book. The guide features lists of books, websites and videos that empower black families. I highly recommend this book to all parents, grandparents and caregivers involved with raising African American children.

Like Beverely Tatutum's "Why Are All the Black Kinds Sitting Together in the Cafteria?", Ms. Ward's work is a much needed call for Black cultural identity develoopment on the part of children of African descent. For too many Black children and teens in this country are experiencing an identity crisis--whereby hip-hop identity is associated with gangsterism and being smart is equated with being White. Ward's work calls for Black culture to be used as tool for Black achievement and identity. The only missing part of this book is practical suggestions or strategies that parents could use to help their children develop Black cultural consciousness. A sort of resource book or workbook would be useful companion to her work.

Negotiating a racist social landscape is the prime stumbling block to the success of African-American young people. How do parents equip their children for this daunting task? Dr. Ward's book is a significant tool. It offers concrete strategies for parents and illuminates the struggle with engrossing interviews. Dr. Ward's book should be read by all but her model for resistance should be embraced by anyone affected by racism.

                        Book Description

The gardens and landscapes designed by Fernando Caruncho, based in Madrid, are spectacular contemporary creations based on ancient principles and elements of garden art: geometry and symmetry; stone and water; bay, box, cypress, and olive. Caruncho's designs emerge from the great garden traditions of Spain where he was born and educated and undertook his first commissions. This monograph, the first published on his work, includes spectacular photographs of 23 gardens, as well as beautiful images of his plans and drawings.

Caruncho discusses his design philosophy and influences in a substantial interview with the authors. The garden-academies of ancient Greek philosophers - along with his own study of Greek and Roman philosophy - proved a significant source of inspiration. Important historic gardens - the Alhambra, the great 14th century Spanish palace; Zen-inspired Japanese gardens; the Boboli Gardens of 16th century Florence; and French formal gardens designed by André Le Nôtre and others - were equally consequential.

Featured in this volume are private and public gardens throughout Spain - Madrid, Bilbao, Barcelona, Majorca, and elsewhere - and one in Biarritz, France. Ranging from small urban spaces to grand country estates and even to a spectacular landscape formed entirely of wheat, Caruncho's garden designs combine influences from the past and present in masterly compositions that exemplify the formal garden for the new millennium.

5 out of 5 stars A Study Of Landscape As A Facet Of The Imagination.......2001-08-15

Mirrors of Paradise is a truly inspired presentation of a diverse sampling of Fernando Caruncho's architectural genius writ large on the landscape. A highly imaginative gardener by disposition, Caruncho possesses an idiosyncratic eye for wrinkles in the formal geometry of what is usually mundane. And the capacity to ingeniously comment on what he observes through design innovations which exhibit both wit and poignancy. To take but one example of this phenomena, in the Ollauri Garden which was designed in the mid nineteen-eighties, where a traditional water jet might be placed in the middle of numerous individual fountains making up a large flat reflecting pool, Caruncho plants single tall cypress trees in stone troughs. What a revelation this transformation of the ordinary creates! Such touches of imaginative whimsy permeate this man's work. But it is not caprice for its own sake. Every action is deliberate and conveys meaning. Every formal element tells a story. Mirrors Of Paradise is exceptionally well-designed, well-written, and contains a wealth of photographic images that do great justice to a man's work which is visually stunning, intellectually sophisticated and imaginatively pure.

                        Book Description

Like most Christians, Mary Blye Howe was uninformed about Jewish ritual and tradition. To satisfy her curiosity she joined a Jewish study group held in the home of a Hasidic rabbi. A Baptist Among the Jews is Howe's first-person account of her eye-opening experience of studying with that welcoming group and how this experience led her to a deeper, richer relationship with her God. While learning about the traditions of Judaism and studying the Torah, Howe discovered a new world of worship and ritual that expanded her experience to include several different Jewish groups, among them Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox. She reveled in the joys of arguing with God (even though God always wins), synagogue-hopping on the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, and dancing with a sefer torah through the streets of Dallas. Page after page, we join Howe on her religious quest and discover how her once-narrow concept of God has expanded with her ability to read the scriptures and understand this new faith. Howe's profound and transforming experiences helped her develop a new sense of worship— one that eschews spectatorship in favor of participation.

4 out of 5 stars Not Exactly a Baptist Among the Jews .......2005-09-07

A Baptist Among the Jews is a great starter book for Christians interested in almost all forms of Judaism. The only 'denomination' she leaves out is Reconstructionism, explaining that this is because she had no access to it.

Howe takes the reader through study groups, Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform synagogue services, Torah retreats, and even spends time explaining her experiences with Chabad Jews, who are known for their black coats, fedoras, and their loyalty to a particular rabbi. By the time the reader finishes A Baptist Among the Jews he or she will have a lot of positive, in depth information about modern Jewish thought.

On the other hand (there's always another hand, isn't there?), the title leads one to believe that Howe is a conservative, born-again Christian (The Baptist part of the title) who is transformed through her experiences with some Jewish people. She is actually a pretty liberal Christian who enjoys "re-imagin[ing] scripture."

She attends and lauds a feminine re-imagining of a Passover seder with a Haggadah written from a feminist perpective, and says on page 102, "In my not-so-distant past, I, along with the churches I attended, feared seeing God as feminine, even while we hurried to add that God was not male. Translations of scripture that used feminine - or even inclusive - pronouns angered us because we believed that this was somehow changing God. No one, however, is changing God. We're merely expanding our *images* of God."

I am not saying anything is wrong with this, I am merely saying that the title of the book is disingenuous to portray the author as a Baptist-- The Baptist denomination takes the Bible literally, does not allow women in positions of power over men, they cannot be pastors, and they have spoken out against gender-inclusive languge in the Bible. Howe states several times in the book that she has belonged to several churches, each different from the last, and I did not get the impression that more than one of them was Baptist or even conservative. I could be wrong; that is just the impression I get.

I enjoyed this book - the writing is clear and the author is not overly wordy or bombastic. She writes almost like a reporter, weaving facts in with interesting personal stories. The only pet peeve I have is that she consistently says, "The Jews," rather than "some Jews," or "Jewish group." She says things like, "When I study with the Jews..." "..worshipping with the Jews..." as though there are about 20 of them. Most Jews are secular and do not study Torah or follow halakha, so the term "the Jews" felt weird when I read it every time. I don't think she would have said, "When I studied with the Baptists," or "When I worshiped with the Mormons," since it makes it sound like they are part of some little group that meets in a clubhouse once a week. Anyway, it just struck me as odd.

                        4 out of 5 stars Approaching God.......2003-10-23

"A Baptist Among the Jews" is a passionate blueprint for achieving ecumenical understanding and cooperation. The author has managed to transcend the confines of her narrow fundamentalist origins and allow herself to experience other approaches to the Divine. And "experience" is the key issue in this fascinating story of the author's acceptance and inclusion by the Jewish community. Howe isn't overly concerned with doctrine or dogma. She doesn't bring a list of theological preconceptions or doctrinal preconditions to her relationship with reform, conservative, orthodox, and even hasidic Jews. That a person can actually come closer to God in a faith tradition other than her own is perhaps the central lesson of her book and one that more people would do well to emulate.

This book is so filled with spirit and heart. As it unfolds, the reader is drawn into a deep understanding about spirituality with a sense of humor and feeling.

From the first page to the last, this book captivated me with Ms. Howe's experience among the Jewish religion and culture. This book is a must read for anyone who seeks to understand their own faith, be it Christianity or Judaism.
