Memoirs of a Cold War Son.......2000-04-03
This is a wonderfully introspective book, written by the intellectually driven Prof. Post. There are similarities to `Remembrance of Things Past', by Marcel Proust. The obvious exceptions are Post's evident heterosexuality and the length of the works. Post is continually in search for his identity and his role in the world, which is apparently a dynamic of his life. The level of detail is at times a bit overwhelming, especially in his military sojourn in Germany, although this is also a crucial episode, not only in his life, but in the search for meaning of `the cold war son'. He has a most wonderful interaction with his close knit family and his constant search for the meaning of his mother's psychological collapse during and post WWII, appears to be a driving force in his search for the meaning of his life. This is truly a gripping rendition of a man's struggle with his own psychology and a glimpse of the world events surrounding his formative years of identity.

Book Description
We are swamped with information and each day seems to bring new discoveries that must be considered. Never before in the history of science have so many scientists been as active as today. It has become a major problem for the expert just to keep up with the literature in his or her own field of research. Why, then, should experts and their poor students worry about the pioneers of microbiology, those half-forgotten scientists who a century ago devoted their lives to a new science that was on its way to revolutionizing medicine?
With so many new facts and problems screaming for our attention, it is easy to lose sight of the long road that we have travelled in order to get to the point where we are now. Tracing the path of those who have gone before us will help us to see our own scientific goals and efforts in a more revealing perspective.
The great figures who are at the center of interest in this book Robert Koch, Emil von Behring, Paul Ehrlich and Elie Metchnikoff were far from uncontroversial during their lifetimes. It is interesting to see how they were judged by their peers at the Karolinska Institutet when they were considered for the Nobel Prize.
Pioneers of Microbiology and the Nobel Prize has been written in such a way that it can be enjoyed even without an extensive knowledge of microbiology and medicine. In fact, a considerable part of the book portrays the state of medicine during the middle of the 19th century, when bacteriology can be said to have made its debut on the medical scene.
Book Description
It’s the End of Your Marriage–Not Your Life.
Few experiences bring more pain than divorce. Like the death of a loved one, divorce plunges us into grief and loneliness, heartache and depression. Perhaps worst of all, divorce makes us believe that all that is meaningful and joyful has come to an end. Do not believe it.
Better Days Are Just Ahead.
You already know that divorce is one of the greatest challenges you will ever face. Yet it also can trigger tremendous growth in several key areas, including your relationships, the way you see yourself, and how you live out your faith. No one is calling divorce a blessing. But it is something that you will live through and that can help to powerfully transform you into the person God has created you to be.
Whether you are in the earliest stages of divorce, are newly single again, are processing an earlier divorce, or know someone whose marriage is ending, New Life After Divorce offers encouragement and hope that this new life will be a good life–and the promise that healing, strength, purpose, and joy are around the corner.
Customer Reviews:
New Life Promise.......2006-01-16
I have read this book, and bought several as gifts for people in a divorce recovery group. Bill Butterworth is very open and honest about the pain he endured through this difficult transition. I also endured a painful divorce and work with a recovery group. I am always on the lookout for information that will reach out to others and assure them that divorce is not the end--God has a wonderful plan for you and He can and will heal your ravaged heart. I highly recommend this book.
Resonating With Truth.......2005-06-03
Whenever divorce hits your life, it hurts. Bill Butterworth had a wife of seventeen years, five kids, and a career as a speaker and writer on issues of marriage and family. Divorce definitely knocked the wind out of his life, and he didn't work for six months. As he writes in the opening pages of his book, "I lived each day waiting for the phone to ring, hoping my wife would say she wanted to get back together. That phone call never came." While he understands the pain of divorce, this book is focused on helping the reader gain encouragement and hope to get through it.
Butterworth combines pointed storytelling with wise how-to information and a mixture of some Scripture to help the reader take concrete steps forward. At first, he tackles the basics: the need for acceptance from self, the need for healing from God, and the need for help from others. Then he considers the advantage of time, distance and wise counsel combined with valued relationships and tapping into the power of forgiveness. The third section of the book examines some practical matters for many in this situation such as single parenting, getting along with your ex-spouse, and the different type of dating scene.
Butterworth writes with humor as well as vulnerability about his first date with Kathi (who eventually became his wife). "I asked her out for dinner that evening. She said, yes, and I was as excited as a schoolboy. I was also dumb as a schoolboy; I had neglected to handle a few key issues surrounding a successful date. Sheepishly I had to call Kathi to resolve my sloppy planning." While Butterworth planned a date, he didn't have transportation since he took a cab from the airport to the hotel. He writes, "'So I don't have a car. I was wondering if you would mind driving...' Those last words just seemed to hang out there forever. 'No problem.' She continued to sound sweet... You drive; I'll buy! Was the worst retort I could have used. So, naturally I used it. She laughed. I winced. But God allowed a wonderful evening to take place." On his first date, he even gave Kathi the Myers Briggs Type Indicator personality test. Yes --- really. The date worked out and they've been married ten years.
Anyone in a divorce is in the middle of some huge life changes, and Butterworth tackles these issues in the final section of his book. How do you manage change and the associated fears? He taps the ultimate resource for these situations --- God's power. "God's power is in His word, the Bible. For those of us who read these words, the Scriptures are our ultimate source of healing, encouragement and energy. He gives us the power we need to make it day by day as we spend time reading, reflecting and meditating on His truth." Also this final section addresses the often asked question, Where is God? And then, How Do I Get A Second Wind?
While it's been over ten years since I've walked the path of divorce, I found reading Butterworth's advice that those emotions were close to the surface of my emotions. The stories and the practical how-to information touched something deep inside and I could resonate with the truth in these pages. NEW LIFE AFTER DIVORCE is a solid resource to help the many people who are thrust into divorce. You can definitely see the author has walked the walk and talks the talk.

More religious oriented than practical.......2005-09-19
Too much "turn your problems over to God," too little practical steps to take to deal with the grieving of divorce and get on with one's life. But...my mistake. I was looking for a workbook for a client to use to supplement therapy. This is obviously not that.

I needed an infusion of new recipes.......2005-07-11
I ended up with a months worth of dinner ideas from this book, so far, we've had about 17 recipes from the book, and they have all been a hit.
Not for people who like cooking or living long lives.......2005-04-27
Be aware that the recipes in this book are either ridiculously high in fat and/or sodium (and I'm not a low-fat prude by any means) or rely heavily on premade ingredients.
Sample recipe: "Homestyle Chili. Open 3 cans of chili and put them in your slow cooker. Turn it on. Eight hours later, enjoy a delicious home-made chili treat." OK, I'm exaggerating a little. But you get the point.
This book might be acceptable for convenience cooks. Myself, I don't consider a chili recipe a real recipe when one of the ingredients is "canned chili." If you do, maybe this book is for you. Otherwise, there are wayyy better "one dish meal" cookbooks available.
The best cookbook ever.......2004-03-03
The recipes are easy, and tasty with a lot of variety.
Great looking casseroles and one-dish meals.......2003-07-02
I have not yet used any of the recipes in this book but I have
reviewed all of them. The only problem I have with it is that
some people may have to alter the recipes to get rid of some
of the salt and fat. They look absolutely delicious and a book
like this would be used over and over. Pillsbury
cookbooks are my favorites. Their recipes are excellent!
Ok, nothing special.......2003-06-07
I bought this book because I was searching for recipes which I can prepare in advance and leave for my family when I'm away. I have tried a few of the recipes (Bacon Cheeseburger Upside Down Pizza, Baked Ravioli with Meatballs, and a few others)and they have all been good. In other words, my family and I were never displeased with any of the recipes, but they were never excited about any of them either. But we are used to more flavorful dishes since I cook mostly Vietnamese and Mexican dishes. The recipes are really easy to follow though and the pictures are wonderful (most of which looked better than they taste). Overall, the book is great, the recipes are so-so. The dishes in here don't really excite the taste buds, but I'm sure with some experimentation and imagination, anyone can customize them and "kick them up a few notches."

Best Cookbook for Everyday and Special Occasions.......2007-09-19
This is the first cookbook I look through when planning the week's meals, and often it is the last. Try the 20 Garlic Chicken for a great no-fuss company meal or the Cheesy Hot Dog Casserole to please the kids. The make-ahead meals are fantastic for nights when the babysitter feeds the kids or to give to friends after a move or hardship. I usually get requests for the recipe after sharing the make-ahead meals.
The book is well laid out and easy to read with not more than 2 recipes per page. The photographs are full color and well labeled, and there are plenty of them. The book is filled with tips and special sections, such as quick and easy dessert suggestions and a section on casserole cookware. The best part of the book may well be the extensive slow-cooker recipes. From soups and chili to roasts and barbecues, there is something suitable for your next meal.
I highly recommend this cookbook. It is my favorite by far.
Best Cookbook I own........2007-09-18
This is by far the best cookbook I have ever seen. The recipies are not only one-dish, but quick and easy, and most of the ingredients are items you have on hand. All of our favorite family dishes come from this book. I give this as wedding and housewarming gifts all the time. It is separated into three sections: Casseroles, Skillet Meals and Slow Cooker. Each section groups the recipe by items such as family friendly, entertaining etc. The only caution, if you have a Pillsbury Cookbook, you may already have many of these recipes within that book.
love this book.......2007-03-29
I have children with milk, eggs, and peanuts allergies. This cookbook has been wonderful for my family. We can only cook with a couple of ingredients mainly chicken, potatoes, rice, beef, and beans. This cookbook gives many variations using those ingredients. The recipes are quick and easy as well. My husband loves cooking with this book to.
Pillsbury One-Dish Meals Cookbook.......2006-07-11
Excellent cookbook for easy, on-hand type ingredients. Great for family meals.
NOT WORTH IT !!!.......2006-06-18
Thank goodness I got this cookbook as a gift, because I would have wanted my money back! Of the 10 receipes I tried, only 2 actually turned out decent. Many of them needed to be cooked for a much longer time than the receipe called for and all of the receipes that could be prepared ahead of time turned out very mushy and gross. I don't think they bothered to try some of their own receipes before placing them in the cookbook.
Book Description
This is the story of one man's struggle to develop the British War Dog School. Richardson began experimenting with military and police dogs in 1898, and in 1910 began petitioning for a British military dog program. He finally received official approval with support of officers who were unofficially, and successfully, using his dogs in the field. Over 2000 dogs were trained and sent to the front to work as Red Cross dogs, messengers, sentries and patrol dogs - the lives saved were estimated in thousands. Cummins recounts not only Richardson's struggle, but also the history of war dogs through the ages.
Book Description
The techniques are simple - the papers are cut, then folded, to create rosettes. These can then be built up with paper segments to create colourful, decorative and circular designs. Many different items can be embellished with these rosettes - photograph albums, journals, books, frames, boxes, cards and more. This book is packed with new and exciting ideas, and lots of information for all tea bag folding enthusiasts.
Customer Reviews:
Full of Creativity and Inspiration.......2003-04-27
This book is quite charming if you like working small. This book contains instructions on how to make dozens of projects using small squares of paper. Most of the projects require the folding of either 4cm or 5cm squares which is about the size of a tea bag, hence the name.
You can't truly appreciate how lovely these designs are until you make them for yourself. When I first looked at this book I was enthralled with the papers they used. After a brief search on the internet I found kcardinal.freeserve.co.uk/index.htm which has tiles of all of the papers used in this book. I simply copied the images to my desktop and had instant printable squares ready for use (after I cut them out of course.) A search for tea bag folding tiles turned up pages of free, downloadable, printable images for use in tea bag folding.
The only downside to this book that I have found is that the instructions could be a bit more detailed. I love origami and have some experience in this area so I was able to figure out where the author was going by looking at the images of what it is supposed to look like and fanagling my way a bit until I got it right. If you don't mind a bit of a challenge the rewards are quite satisfying. If you are new to origami do not be intimidated. I encourage you to make use of the techniques and soon you will be folding like a pro.
If you like origami and the intrigue of folding little squares that interlock or glue into a finished design you will enjoy this book. It is great to get the juices flowing and might even spark some ideas of your own!
Book Description

They also include other techniques to embellish and enhance designs: paper architecture, embossing, stamping and paper burning. This book is just what you've been waiting for - offering inspiration to beginners and all those who love this absorbing craft.
Customer Reviews:
Not What I Thought.......2004-06-11
This review is based purely on the fact that the book is not what I assumed it would be--I wanted it for the Celtic designs and thought that half of the designs would be Celtic but only two of the seven designs are Celtic--the other five are Oriental. There is nothing wrong with this . . . unless you want it for the Celtic designs, as I did!

Book Description
Do you know your chances of getting assaulted and injured by someone else in your lifetime are greater in your family by far than in any other group of people you are likely to be around? Why is the family so violent? One of the main reasons is society's belief that physical punishment is good for our children. Why Spanking Doesn't Work proves otherwise.
In this insightful, well-researched book, Dr. Marshall reveals what have been called "the best-kept secrets in developmental psychology." The author shows:
Hitting a child causes more behavioral problems than it solves
Spanking has been found to increase aggression in children
Cases of poor self-image and depression have been traced to childhood corporal punishment
Repetition of one's own childhood experience is a poor substitute for informed parenting
Inflicting punishment is easyanyone can strike a childbut healthy discipline practices must be learned. Parents who explore this book will be amply rewarded as they learn alternatives to spanking and other forms of physical punishment.
Customer Reviews:
Review.......2007-02-27
Having been formally trained in child psychology and special education, I was not personally comfortable with the tone and position the author rigidly assumes in this book and was unable to finish reading it.
It is time for a change.......2006-10-13
This book is a must read for any parent or potential parent. This book is well written and well researched. The author gets it right on the mark.
I didn't realize until much later in life the effect that this kind of punishment had on my emotional and psychological well being. And many other people are beginning to discover this in their lives as well. It is unfortunate that many parents believe and are convinced that discipline involving physical pain is healthy and appropriate.
It is time for us to evolve and stop taking the easy way out by simply following uninspired traditional methods. There are truly more positive and effective methods of parenting available. But, it must begin with an open mind, and a willingness to learn better ways. And this book is a valuable resource for those who wish to end this cycle of abuse. It is odd that violence is socially acceptable only when it is done to children, the ones who are the most sensitive and vulnerable.

Book Description
Robert Hobbs calls Beatrice Mandelman one of the most original and important of the Taos abstract painters. An artist since the 1920s, she moved to Taos in the 1940s with her husband, Louis Ribak, and became one of the leaders of the third generation of New Mexico painters. Although Mandelman worked for the Federal Art Project in the 1930s and was an accomplished social realist, in Taos she adapted the vocabulary of Modernism to the strong light and startling landscapes of New Mexico and developed her own unique style.
In the evolution of her work she has shown the influences of her early teacher Louis Lozowick and friends Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and other New York abstract painters. She also studied with Fernand Léger and Francis Picabia in Paris, but painting in the relative isolation of northern New Mexico allowed her to create an important regional variant of the international modern style. This book is not only a close examination of the life work of a lively and dedicated Taos artist, it is also about how Modernism developed and flourished outside of New York and Paris.

Jewish identity is proved by motherhood, and it's a fairly well-founded stereotype that women are the most powerful people in American Jewish families. (Think of Rhoda's mother or Woody Allen's Mother-in-the-Sky.) Yet many Jewish communities still view women as second-class citizens, which exacerbates the social alienation that immigration and assimilation have wrought on many American Jewish women. The Journey Home: How Jewish Women Shaped Modern America is Joyce Antler's attempt to find common ground among American Jewish women in the 20th century. The book interweaves social history, including Antler's memories of her own mother and grandmother, with the stories of Jewish women who have been influential in the vanguard of social and cultural movements such as suffrage, civil rights, birth control, trade unionism, and feminism. Bella Abzug, Edna Ferber, Gertrude Stein, Betty Friedan, and Barbra Streisand are among the leading characters in Antler's narrative, which is an impressive monument to Jewish women's achievements so far--and will be an indispensable comfort and guide to Jewish women in the future. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
Throughout the twentieth century, American Jewish women have made history, challenging the political and cultural constraints facing women in every aspect of American life. From suffrage to birth control, from trade unionism to civil rights and feminism, from education to literature and the arts, Jewish women have been in the vanguard, leading key social movements and shaping cultural consciousness.
Interweaving social history with lively biographical portraits, Joyce Antler profiles women ranging from Emma Goldman, Sophie Tucker, and Golda Meir to Bella Abzug, Gertrude Stein, and Wendy Wasserstein, examining the political conflicts and personal tensions that have animated their lives as they made their mark on American society. Meticulously researched and fascinating to read, The Journey Home is a valuable resource that will inspire all women.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read for all Women's History Fans.......2000-07-06
This book is a wealth of information for ANYONE who enjoys women's history, as well as labor, entertainment and political history. The author of the book, Joyce Antler, has done a phenomenal amount of research to bring all these women to life. The only criticism I have is that the title might put off some readers, thinking that religion is the main theme. In fact, although religion plays an important role in all these women's lives, thier personal histories are fascinating regardless of their religious background. This book made me want to get full biographies of all the women mentioned in the book!
