Book Description
Snoring is no joke! Snoring is the most common sign of sleep apnea, a potentially fatal sleep disorder that affects approximately 20 million Americans. It is associated with heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes, and premature death, and is a common cause of driving accidents, yet it frequently goes undiagnosed. Snoring and Sleep Apnea is for people who have — or suspect that they have — sleep apnea. It is also written for their bed partners, families, and friends, and for health care professionals involved in sleep apnea management. The book provides answers to key questions, written in easy-to-understand terms, as well as the pros and cons of specific treatments. This extensively revised and updated third edition includes information on new surgical techniques, the treatment of children with snoring and sleep apnea problems, and new oral appliances for relief of snoring and sleep apnea.

apnea.......2007-09-25
I have been diagnosed with apnea and use a CPAP. I bought four books to gain a deeper insight into my condition. While informative this book does not cover the subject nearly as well as Sleep Apnea - Phantom of the Night. I would not recommend purchase of this book.
Great info - where did they get the pictures?!.......2007-08-03
Great information, well conveyed. One of the authors is a sufferer; the other is the spouse of a snorer so they know of what they speak. Couldn't help but marvel at the grainy, awful, poor resolution pictures that look like they came from a 1960 science book. I guess the small circulation / audience doesn't justify using current technolgy.
Very helpful and I would buy it again.
not what I needed.......2006-06-27
I bought this book because it purported to have a chapter on alternative therapies. The chapter was absolutely useless and insulting to those of us who consider acupuncture and other complimentary medicine before jumping into prescriptions and invasive medical devises. The book was worthless to me. I threw it away.
Excellent book!.......2004-11-07
Snoring and Sleep Apnea provides a thorough coverage of sleep studies and the use of the CPAP machine. It even offers drugs that can make sleep apnea worse - something not usually mentioned. Chapter 16 offers ideas on Alternative Medicine and Sleep Apnea which is also a topic that is rarely addressed. It discusses alternative medicine in a positive way while still warning the reader and suggesting some basic "rules of thumb" when investigating different treatments.
Doctor, patient's wife team up to create `great resource'.......2004-09-08
If you're struggling to stay awake during the day and find yourself nodding off if you are not actively doing something -- you should read this book.
If you are the bed partner of someone who snores loud enough to
keep you up at night -- this book is a must read.
If you have recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea you should
read this book.
"Snoring and Sleep Apnea" guides you down the path from the first realization that something might be wrong through the
diagnostic process and possible treatment options available to people with apnea.
The authors are sleep specialist Ralph Pascualy, paired with the wife of one of his patients, Sally Warren Soest.
This writing team may seem to be a little different at first look, but they do an excellent job of presenting the medical
information in clear, easy-to-understand language.
Pascualy and Soest take the reader through recognizing the symptoms of a sleep apnea, what to expect during a sleep study, how to locate a board-certified sleep specialist, and why you want to be treated by one.
The writing team provide real world examples of the various treatment options, and go on to explain who might benefit from each procedure or device -- and why.
The 272-page book includes pictures and descriptions of various masks and xPAP machines. It also provides a general overview of the features that can be found on these devices, and the problems that are solved by those features.
Although the information is slightly dated because it has been in print since 2002, most of the general information remains
constant and practical today.
The duo also discuss various surgical options available to people with sleep apnea, including the additional hazards general anesthesia poses on people with sleep apnea. They explore why a procedure that will help a 10-year-old child with apnea is useless to an adult.
The use of short case studies helps the reader to grasp the importance of understanding pros and cons of the treatment options before selecting one.
I cannot praise the frankness with which they discuss dealing with durable medical equipment suppliers. This area often proves to be the weakest link in the patient's chain of treatment. Frequently patients don't understand they have the right to demand better service, that they have the right to select another home health care company if necessary to get the proper level of customer service, as well as patient care, that should be expected.
A home health care company is the company that you will be dealing with if you need replacement parts or technical assistance at 2 a.m. because your machine has malfunctioned.
The authors demonstrate how proper follow-up, coupled with good communication with the home health care company is critical.
Unlike many books, especially books that deal with medical issues, this one can be read from front to back -- or you can bounce around from one chapter to another -- totally out of sequence, finding the information that interests you most.
I wish I had known such a high quality resource was available in the early days of my family coping with sleep apnea and contending with some of the issues it presented. Instead, we walked the narrow road, learning as we went, and often getting bits of conflicting, often inaccurate, information about the disorder.
The authors show compassion to patients and their families coping with this strange condition that has stolen the productive person they used to know and love and guide them along the path back to a productive life.

Fun, easy and delicious.......2007-01-15
I bought this book before Christmas so I could give jar recipes to everyone in our very large extended family. They loved the cookies! I loved them so much I bought an extra set of jars so I could have several varieties on hand in our pantry for when the kids want cookies. Okay, for when I want cookies. The recipes in this book are very easy, fun to make, and surprisingly delicious!
Sorry I bought it.......2006-12-04
The oatmeal cookies in this book are terrible...Sawdust must taste better and it will be more moist. I think she cut back on the recipe quantity so they would fit in the jar...whatever she did it turned out very wrong.
Easy to use Cookie Book.......2005-09-06
I bought this book to use as door prizes at a wedding shower. I found the directions easy to follow. I am definately using the book again to make gifts to give. I received positive feedback from the shower, and several people asked for the recipes of the cookies so they could make them again. I highly recommend this book.
loved it.......2004-11-11
Very unique cookbook with easy to follow recipes. I gave these as gifts and everyone loved them! The Best Ever Chocolate Chip cookies are to die for!
Nice book, awful recipes.......2002-12-22
I didn't want to give these as gifts before trying out the recipes. The first one I tried made cookies that were about as dry and as hard as rocks. The second recipe made cookies that came out like pancakes that I had to scrape off the pan and throw out. I wasn't interested in wasting more time on any others. I modified one of my own favorite recipes to fit in a jar.

Book Description
Seasoned knitters know: the sassiest garments are often the easiest to stitch as long as you understand why and what you 're doing. In KNITTER 'S LIB, handmade knit designer Lena Maikon applies her learn-as-you-go approach to 20 original designs that provide instant gratification for the most fashionable (and impatient) up-and-coming knitter. Lena 's stylish patterns for bandanas, hats, scarves, bikinis, shawls, sweaters, tanks, bags, skirts, logs, pants, capes, and muffs combine both knit and crochet stitches, inspiring yarn buffs to break out their needles all year round. KNITTER 'S LIB is about knitting with open eyes it 's not about following the pack or even following the pattern. Lena eliminates the mystery of every project 's curve and seam, teaching knitters and crocheters of all abilities how to personalize patterns and create stylish, from-scratch designs with confidence and success.
Customer Reviews:
Too Much Tude and Not Enough Lib.......2006-08-02
This book fails to deliver on its promise, as stated in the title. Upon picking up this book, I was expecting to learn the magic of knitting garments without the servitude of following a pattern. Instead, I was given a lesson on how to crochet (as well as how to knit) and advised to make everything big and oversized. I detest big and bulky. I find it to be the most unflattering, even when "worn in the city," whatever that means. The "humorous" parts seemed more demented to me, invoking more "ehs?" and "ewwwws" than "ha, has." At times, I find the tone to be admonishing, almost impatient with the reader if one has not followed her instructions verbatim earlier in a recipe (which is in direct conflict with the book's title again, and I can see why she's not a math teacher anymore....) The math parts that don't make any sense that are carelessly thrown in are hard to understand and slow things down with confusion and many rereadings.
There are a few cute things to crochet in here, however this book is in desperate need of a new title and an edit job to get rid of the too many "I's." I certainly didn't feel very liberated after reading this book.
On the contrary--the patterns are lovely!.......2006-08-02
While I agree with the other reviewers that the book's message--"free yourself from pattern dependency"--is incongruent with the many patterns in the book (the author does address design elements in one of the chapters) and that this is mostly a crochet pattern book--I count 10 crochet, 8 knit/crochet (crocheted edgings, necks and waistbands mostly), and 2 knit patterns--the book is not without its merits!
First of, the patterns are lovely! Most are pretty, happy and colorful (not garish), and simple enough to tackle especially for a knitter like me who is just learning to crochet and would like to learn how to incorporate crochet and knitting together. The author teaches you--through doing her patterns--how, why, and where to add crochet when it is part of knitting. Second, the author walks you through each pattern and explains why and what you are doing. She writes well and gives you clear step-by-step directions.
Her patterns are in the spirit of Stitch 'n Bitch though her patterns and color choices are prettier. Her designs remind me also of Joelle Hoverson's Last Minute Knitted Gifts. Yes, the patterns are simple and happy, mostly accessories, which I love! For a beginner crocheter, this is exactly what I need to start on--something small yet beautiful enough to inspire me. Some of my favorite patterns are: the Beach Bandanna, 1920's Cloche Hat (pretty), Kremlin Beret (original), Fargo-with-a-Kiss-Hat (fun), Bow-Wow Cowl, Hippie Bikini Top, Lara's Muff, All-Organic Tote Bag, and His and Her Clogs. (I'm not too crazy about the scarfs--they are not very pretty or original in my opinion.)
So while the title may not be the best one for this book, I give Knitter's Lib 5 stars for its lovely crochet/knit and crochet patterns.
Check it out at the library; don't waste your money!.......2006-04-12
There was nothing new or different regarding this book. The author did not provide any significant information that would help a beginner or slightly intermediate crocheter or knitter to get beyond the use of a pattern. I was hoping to get guidance to learn how to create one's own patterns; didn't get that.
Enlightenment!!!.......2006-02-28
This is the book I have been looking for for years! Not only does it provide a comprehensive lesson on basic knitting and crocheting stitches but it explains the reasons why stitches are used. This witty author takes a realistic approach to creating while also being unique! Thankyou!
Vikki Drummond
PS - The Sub-title of the book had me half sold!
Novelty.......2005-11-28
As one of the reviewers had put it, the title and contents doesn't match out, as the bk is more crochet oriented and the instructions for fair isle is a bit confusing to a novice.
But the book does have some interesting points with instructions on how to crochet flowers on to clogs and making a half sock on to the opening of a clog. Readable but otherwise don't think I wil get it.

Customer Reviews:
Magical, Quirky, Dover-esque Garden Interplay.......2007-02-21
Dover Publishing meets Monty Python - A magical, quirky little treasure trove of drawings, pleasing etchings, engravings, and mainly re-colored intaglio depictions that look back on the garden through the eyes of artists. Just as Versailles mania spread across Europe, no prince or princeling worthy of his title was content until he too had structured his garden in an imitation of Le Notre.
In Vienna, the Hapsburgs rebuilt Schonbrunn deliberately to rival Versailles. In Germany, Schwetzinger boasted a vast circular parterre with curved trellis arches.
Garden Mania thrives on the interplay and alternation of formal and informal. The highly styled late Seventeenth, and Early Eighteenth Century parterres, sculpture, arbors, and bosquets were bound to provoke a reaction - the revolt against formality and Classicism first began in England. Garden Mania is an inclusive compendium of garden fantasy, design and ornament that will especially charm artists familiar with Dover stylebooks. Noting however, Clarkson Potter of New York published this book. Thames & Hudson Ltd., London, originally published Garden Mania.
Book Description
Here is a constructive alternative to modern education. The author stresses spiritual values andhelping children grow toward full maturity learning not only facts, but also innovative principlesfor better living. This book is the basis for the Living Wisdom schools and the Education for LifeFoundation, which trains teachers, parents and educators. Encouraging parents and educators tosee children through their soul qualities, this unique system promises to be a much needed breathof fresh air.
Customer Reviews:
An awesome model for Education.......2006-04-14
I have 4 children, all whom have been raised in private schools implementing these valuable teachings. When education is not so much about academics and competition, but character growth, spiritual growth, service, and cooperation, you see some pretty amazing kids as a result. Academics are not underplayed (the average score of the high school students was 95% of national averages on National Aptitude Tests), it's just that academics are not paramount around which all else revolves. I see the results largely as the product of the children's education: caring, loving, generous, kind, self-aware, and yes very smart, individuals as a result of Education for Life. Certainly it is the most profound model of positive education in our age. I'd recommend livingwisdom.org and livingwisdomschool.org for more information. Certainly read this book and if you are not near a school that utilizes the principles you can still bring them into your own family with great success.
Recommended for parents and educators!.......2005-11-09
If the whole world were to follow the instructions in this book, there would not be any criminals in this sordid planet of ours. The existence of law-breakers in every nation shows us that the education system in this planet is at its infancy. If governments of every nation were to apply the principles outlayed in this book in the various schools, the whole world would have peace and harmony among the different nations. Suicide bombers would cease to exist and there would be a high level of tolerance among the different faiths.
The real meaning of education is for life and this book portrays this fundamental truth beautifully. It is easy to read and understand what J. Donald Walters is trying to say. My only hope is that educators will not ignore the beautiful message Walters is trying to convey in this wonderful book.
Meaning in Education.......2000-05-28
If education followed this model, we wouldn't be having all the problems in high schools resulting from the kids' perceived meaninglessness in these institutions.
First, a goal for education is established--educating for all of life, not just for the standardized tests or for job competency. Then we are given some ideas of how this can be done.
For example, Walters suggests helping students develop four Tools of Maturity. They are more basic than Gardner's eight multiple intelligences, and by addressing each Tool, every child's strengths will be found and recognized.
For me the most powerful part of the book is the section on Progressive Development. A rather different model of working with different children differently according to their energy level has proved very useful in my classroom. I know of only one other author who proposes approaching children differently in this way, and that's Lickona who recommends different approaches depending on moral development. Energy level seems easier to perceive for me.
The book could have more specific examples of how to implement the insights it provides, but I think it is meant to be a signpost for parents and teachers, pointing the way, but encouraging us to use our own intuitions to make the journey.

Book does Bada justice.......2004-04-02
I got to flip through this book thanks to my art teacher, who brought it to my seminar on traditional Chinese art, and had it passed around among the students. When my turn came, I simply sat spellbound for about 20 minutes, forgotten about the class, forgotten about everything excelt the amazing paintings that unveiled themselves before me. Unquestionably, Bada Shanren is one of the greatest artists that ever lived; moreover, his paintings simply do not age - I've asked many people, and most of them, even those who were familiar with Asian art, put Bada's paintings in the 20th century, in this way he's even superior to the great masters of the Renaissance.
This book is an excellent catalogue of Bada Shanren's works, one that does the godlike skill of the artist justice. The reproduction quality is uniformly excellent, and the accompanying text is a very informed and interesting analysis of the works.
If you're going to buy one art book, this should be it... if you can find or afford it, that is!
Magical Chinese artist of 17th century beautifully presented.......1998-05-14
Exhibit catalog with brilliant and interesting text about an enigmatic artist, of noble lineage with a style which appears contempoary but of it's time. A wonderful experience.

Book Description
A leading commentator considers the meaning of Israel after fifty years.
When Zionists first advocated a national home for the Jewish people, they also propounded a revolution in the values that Jews should live by, a whole new way of thinking about Jewish life and Jewish history. Has this revolution in fact occurred? And what have the consequences been for Jews and their neighbors? Especially given the extraordinary circumstances that link the United States and Israel, Americans may find the answers to such questions vexing--but the remarkable work of Avishai Margalit goes far to clarify the issues and enlighten the debate.
Over the past two decades, Margalit has written major essays for American readers about the political leaders, cultural crises, and historical background of the contemporary Israeli scene. In Views and Reviews these essays are brought together, with new commentary and observations, and their publication in one volume clearly shows that the whole is much more than the sum of its parts. From Ben-Gurion to Netanyahu, from "Israeli kitsch" to the meaning of the Holocaust for "the seventh million," Margalit enlightens the whole terrain of Israeli life and history. Views and Reviews brings a tragically conflicted country into sharp and memorable focus.
