Book Description
William Morton Wheeler, (1865-1937), a man of extraordinary learning in many fields and a brilliant writer and lecturer, is a significant figure in the history of biology. His studies of social insects, especially ants, contributed greatly to the biological sciences, but his interests and acquaintances ranged far beyond that one limited aspect of biology.
In this volume the Evans combine a well-written biography with an important contribution to the history of biology. Their study begins with Wheeler’s boyhood in Milwaukee and his year at Ward’s Natural Science Establishment in Rochester. His activities as a graduate student at Clark University and his early teaching at the Universities of Chicago and Texas enable them to present an inside view of the formative years of those institutions, as does his involvement with the founding of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole and the Barro Colorado Laboratory in Panama.
After a few years at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, Wheeler went to Harvard, where he stayed for the rest of his life, becoming professor of economic entomology at the Bussey Institution in 1908 and dean in 1914. His continuous and vigorous pioneering make his life story an important chapter in the history of biology.
At the time of writing the book, Mr. Evans was Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology, Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University. Mrs. Evans has contributed articles on the history of biology to several journals.

Book Description
Why do so many of our kids--raised in the most affluent nation on earth--fail to thrive and strive and enter adulthood lacking appropriate and effective coping skills? Drs. Swihart and Cotter have come up with a revolutionary theory on why our kids are having such a tough time of it today: It is because we allow our children to manipulate us, and the world around them, rather than teaching them how to respond to life and life's tough situations. The result is that manipulative behavior is directly tied to low self-esteem, which only heightens its negative impact on kids, families, and the larger communities we live in. The good news is that Drs. Swihart and Cotter have created a radical and clinically proven program for breaking manipulative behavior and getting our kids back on track. The program teaches parents to say no without feeling guilt; to resist the urge to feel responsible for their child's happiness; to view their children as emotionally competent and resilient; and most importantly, to realize that effective parenting means allowing your child to make mistakes and develop a sense of competence, which leads to enhanced self-esteem and an ability to live independently and successfully in the real world.
Drawing on their twenty-five years in private practice, the authors illustrate their program with examples of successful kids, as well as case studies of how parents have regained control and effectively blocked their children's manipulative behavior. The positive results will enlighten, and even astound you, and give you the tools needed to become a better parent.

Not for the Weak or Close Minded Mentors.......2006-11-14
Where to begin?! My head is spinning with the amount of information and introspection this book provides. If you enjoy the payoffs of getting to the root of issues, this book is for you. The payoffs are sometimes right there and simple to achieve and some may require more persistence. If you prefer a life with little growth, confrontation and self awareness then keep watching tv, eating drive-thru fast food and most of all, forget this book.
Nothing worth while is ever easy, but the work done to get great results shows you that you're strong enough to stick it through. When you crack this book open, its a bit like opening Pandora's Box. You will find that each member of the family plays into the behavior we're trying to stop (avoid). If you can't take a bit of self-criticism, you'll miss valuable clues into the drama at hand. The book is not direct in the sense that it openly says 'parents are idiots and do everything wrong', but speaks to us in a gentler way by describing how our being manipulated serves something within ourselves as well.
So, as much as we would like to focus on the child (which this book does), we also need to run a parallel thought process on the hand -we- play.
There are 'assignments' provided which invite you to delve deeper and become better at identifying what you've just learned. It also provides clear information to resolving manipulation behavior and its fallout.
Its refreshing to read a book with such emphasis on self responsibility and integrity. I'm so happy I ordered this book, I think lessons learned will bleed over into other aspects of my life and allow me to improve at parenting and myself! Time to stand up and be the parents our children need us to be!
Book is definitely become my parenting guide........2006-11-03
Another reviewer commented that this isn't for every kid because some kids aren't the same "The book does not addresss children who do not fit into the box". I think he's wrong- I have one of those impossible kids that tests EVERY thing you say and has skillfully found every weak point in our parenting styles and is so energetic that he doesn't stop ALL day long. The authors are dead-on- and the solution is easy but takes lots of consistent effort and time (and cooperative parents). This book has been an eye-opener for how much manipulation takes place on the part of us as parents and how my child learned to out-manipulate us to get out of doing things, for example: "I'm too scare to walk upstairs by myself to brush my teeth", etc. We basically train our kids to get what they want because we often are at a loss (and afraid/tired of dealing with their outbursts) of how to consistently set limits (do we send our kids to time-out, spank, or make reward charts, etc). These authors point out these are all methods of manipulation that just teach our kids to out-manipulate us, the behavior returning once the "reward/punishment" is gone. In three days I have been at "war" with my son- constantly on him to do what I ask- using the stop, pause, redirect method. By day 2 I asked him to please go upstairs and brush his teeth- inside I was weary and afraid he would say no- but you know what happened? He says, ok mommy- and walked right up the stairs without a word of how scared he is. My job was to acknowledge his accomplishment as if it was expected of him "good job, you did it"...
whewww, I am so happy to finally feel like I can do something about his behavior that has really affected the happiness of our family - and child!
good luck, and please try this out! I recommend this book because it works!
Great advice, bad title.......2006-11-01
A better title for this book might be "The Anxious, Overly Reactive and Overly Involved Parent: How to Regain Control of Yourself and Raise Resilient, Resourceful, and Independent Kids," but that title is probably even more off-putting than the real one. The advice and methods are straight forward, uncomplicated, and just common sense. Most of the best teachers and parents I know use something very like stop/pause/redirect to teach their students and children to manage themselves.
To those reviewers who complain that the book is padded with too many examples, I think most readers want examples in parenting books because they provide a framework for applying the parenting advice. The most difficult thing about stop/pause/redirect is that it requires time and patience, and the authors do caution parents not to try it unless they can commit themselves to making the time (and managing their own behavior well enough) to be consistent.
Simply the best parenting book I have read .......2006-06-04
You can analyze and criticize this book but proof is in the pudding. I followed the principles taught in this book and with some follow through and commitment, it worked! This is not a light weight "how to" book. It is about principles, honesty and self responsibility and how to pass those values on to your child. The title of the book doesn't do it justice. As one of the previous reviewers suggested, it could be titled "Guide to Non-Manipulative Parenting".
a daughter of divorced parents.......2006-03-30
The book skates along the lines that yes parents are to be held responsible for their children's actions, which in my line of work I don't see a lot of. I get a lot of children that instead of sitting in their seat drawing or reading they are running around the restaraunt like holligans(if you are a parent of one of these children grab them sit them down and put something in front of them before they run into someone and gets burned by hot food or drink.) Children do need a clear and concise set of rules to follow, and to learn how to behave. But, and there is a but, I was that child who pushed those limits, who gave my divorced parents a lot of "stuff" over the early years, and all I wanted was attention, good attention, not bad, and bad was what I got, especially from my father. My mother pretty much raised me, my father ran in and out of my life and had nothing to do with most of it until I launched myself into adulthood. What Dr. Swihart doesnt write in his book is the impact on a child's life after a divorce when they're grown up. Maybe that should be his next book, but I doubt that he will write another. Hopefully he was writing about his own experiences and mistakes and not the mother's.
If you want to read a book to help you then do it, its a good book, blameful but good, but I say go to family counseling, the hands on experience helps more in the long run, or take child rearing classes they might even give you a better insight into the problem you have.

Customer Reviews:
Twenty Little Patchwork Quilts.......2007-10-07
Twenty Little Patchwork Quilts is an excellent book, showcasing traditional patterns with updated wit and style. The authors are talented artists, and the book is an excellent source for creating works of art with templates that already exist so the choice is the reader's--to make a replica of Marstrom and Cunningham's designs, or to take off and fly, using the templates as a starting point for further creation.
Not So Special.......2006-09-16
I once owned this book but gave it away. I didn't find anything special about any of the quilts in it and, given so many wonderful books on miniatures, I wouldn't recommend that anyone spend any money on this one.
Great but . . ........2002-03-20
This a wonderful book with lovely designs and a full color picture of each completed quilt. The paper templates are preprinted on heavy cardstock paper in the center of the book. My only complaint is....if you intend to machine quilt these, you will have to add a 1/4 seam allowance around each template. It is well worth buying for the beautiful traditional designs such as: drunkard's path, broken dishes etc.,
Excellent book for beginning or experienced quilters!.......2000-01-20
This is a really good value for the price. It shows 20 different quilt patterns for miniature quilts that could all be made into full-size quilts. It gives great easy-to-follow instructions and includes the pattern pieces you need. I am really enjoying it!

Twenty Little Log Cabin Quilts.......2006-07-25
A good introduction to making miniature quilts. I love log cabin, so this book helped me to make a tiny one.
Very Easy but Beautiful Designs!.......2003-01-31
I love this book! I made the block in a block pattern and it turned out beautifully. All directions are easy to follow especially for beginners and the patterns are on heavy cardstock in the middle of the book so there is no need to trace anything. Best of all, the seam allowances have been included so you just cut and sew! Hope you like it! Erin Pennington, Carmi, IL
Excellent!.......2002-03-20
... I love it. Each quilt has easy to follow directions and diagrams. Also, the templates are included in the center of the book on heavy cardstock paper. Every quilt is depicted in a full color picture. Plus, I made an Amish square in a square quilt in one Saturday afternoon. Just in case you are wondering, the templates ARE FULL SIZE fo you do not have to add a seam allowance to machine piece these.
A thin booklet with pleasant content........2002-01-24
This book by Gwen Marston like the others in the series "Twenty little quilts" that I have read so far has 18 quilts shown in color on the inside of the cover plus 2 on the backcover. The photos are small and you can see little detail, but you can easily grasp the concept of each quilt. Some of the colors are not to my taste, but that will just keep me from copying any of the quilts exactly.
Patterns are provided with both template and rotary cutting instructions. A short annotation with each pattern gives a little additional info about how the quilt came about and I appreciate that. The templates are included in a take out section in the middle of the book on light cardboard. Gwen says she makes little quilts to be able to try a lot of different ideas and you can either follow suit or develop the patterns into larger quilts.
I came across those books after reading Liberated Quiltmaking and find them a good additional source.
Book Description
Instructions, eye-catching patterns for 20 "quiltlets" that work up quickly and easily: Four Patch, Zig Zag, Baskets, Triangles, Monkey Wrench, Diamond in a Square, and more. Book Description

Customer Reviews:
As promised: 20 different and delightful little quilts.......2002-01-08
I enjoyed this book as it offers different ideas for one of my favorite patchwork patterns: the four patch.
The quilts are shown in color on the inside covers: 10 on the front and 10 on the back cover's inside. There is a short general section to help with the basics of quilting that I skipped and each quilt is shown with a drawing, material list and cutting instructions. Quilts can either be made with templates that are provided in the center of the book in a sturdy take out section or by rotary cutting.
The quilts are delightful and divers and I am looking forward to taking off on my own starting with the ideas in the book.

An Amazing Tale of a Hater who transformed his life.......1999-06-05
Larry Trapp hated all minorities, women, and committed his life to the cause of "white supremacy". However, as committed as he was, the work of one man, a Jewish cantor and his wife, broke through the barriers of hate, dissolving them. The author is masterful, and does a good job of describing how Trapp became so filled with rage - parents who beat him, and ravaged by a disease, diabetes, which ultimately killed him. Trapp told the cantor that he simply did not know how to change - and the cantor and his family took him into their lives. This story cannot help but touch everyone who reads it. I read the book twice, and wiped twice. It demonstrates that even the most evil-filled person may turn himself around. Trapp even went to the FBI and revealed all he knew about hate groups; he traveled to every youth group he knew, begging them not to join these groups. A unique, well-written book you won't forget.

Book Description
The riveting account begins in 1991, when Cantor Michael Weisser receives his first threatening phone call from Larry Trapp, Grand Dragon of the White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan of Nebraska. Trapp, a wheelchair-bound amputee holed up in a cramped apartment filled with automatic weapons, Nazi paraphernalia, and stacks of hate literature, had for years led a campaign of terror in Lincoln, Nebraska. But Cantor Weisser and his wife Julie refused to be intimidated by Trapp's escalating threats. Instead, they made a stunning offer of friendship; after an emotional confrontation with the Weissers, Trapp shocked everyone -- including himself -- by resigning from the KKK and breaking his ties with other neo-Nazi leaders.
Not by the Sword recounts Larry Trapp's life as a racist, his startling transformation in response to the Weissers' kindness, and his subsequent crusade to redeem his past by apologizing to his victims and speaking out publicly against racism and bigotry. Kathryn Watterson movingly describes how one family, along with other individuals from the Jewish, African American, and Asian American communities in Lincoln, feared, fought, and then forgave a man who had tried to destroy them.
This gripping tale gives the reader an inside view of hate mongering, and offers a powerful testament to the triumph of the human spirit and the transforming power of love and tolerance.
Winner of the Christopher Award.

Recollection.......2001-12-18
I was a member of the Congregation in Lincoln ten years ago, and knew Larry Trapp personally. This book is a great insight into how I remember the situation, and to that great deed of Cantor Weisser. I recommend it fully to everyone out there. It will help you understand the emotion and meaning Larry Trapp added to our lives.
Enlightening and inspiring.......2001-09-10
The first part of this book is a frightening portrait of a dangerous, unstable neo-Nazi. After reading what the book reveals about the personalities of some of these people, racially mixed families might pause before visiting certain parts of our country.
Cantor Weiss's ability to show tolerance and kindness to KKK member Larry Trapp is extremely moving and awe-inspiring. One of the things I learned from this book is that Weiss's capacity for forgiveness actually has deep roots in the Jewish tradition.
