Excellent Account .......2007-05-17
This book should be a must read to all of those who have any interest in Guadalcanal. The book is written in such a way that a reader can get lost in the tale. As you read the book you will swear that you hear the guns roar, feel the jungle humidity as you turn page after page. The author was a very central figure in the battle. It is written in such a way it makes you feel you are talking to the guy. His perspectives brings a new light to understand the why behind what happened. He really covers the intangible things extremely well behind the critical decisions effecting the battle. HE even covers the important but seldom discussed things like the divisional training before the battle.
The con side of the book is it's perspective. Readers should understand he was at the top of the chain. Thus the story is told from that perspective. If a reader wants an understanding of the grunt on the line they should check out another book like the famous Guadalcanal diaries.
A definite must read for any serious student of the war.
"It was another of those beautiful evenings when even the snipers were quiet.".......2007-01-12
General Merrill B. Twinings memoir of the Guadalcanal is amazing. His knowledge of events leading up to the invasion and what happen on the island, are details few know about. He describes how a lot of the records were destroyed. His work is little known but so important to what happen. But its his easy and fun to read narrative of life leading up to and on Guadalcanal that add so much more. I salute you General, for the service to our country.
Instead of a battle quote from The General, I will quote some humour from him about a the Divisional head quarters head cook. I think he would like it.
"Butch Morgan, the world's finest cook, lived a life of quiet despair. He had replaced the blacksmith's forge with a portable Marine Corps field range called, for some strange reason, a Buzycott. Surrounded by all this splendor, poor Butch had nothing worthwhile to cook."
I will leave this with the thought that Good Marines are always hungry and will appreciate the Generals quote :)
A Marine officer's WW2 memories.......2005-07-16
"No Bended Knee: The Battle for Guadalcanal," by Merrill B. Twining, is a memoir by a U.S. Marine Corps officer who served on the headquarters staff of the First Marine Division during World War II. The book is edited by Neil G. Carey and features a foreword by Lieut. Gen. Victor H. Krulak, USMC (retired). Gen. Twining tells of the the Marines' stay in New Zealand in preparation for battle, the amphibious assault on the island of Guadalcanal, combat on the island, and the aftermath of his time on Guadalcanal.
This is a fascinating account of the massive effort to transform this island into what Twining calls "an unsinkable aircraft carrier." He offers a comprehensive and compelling look at how all the various individuals and organizations contributed to this epic effort, among them Marine aviators, Navy Seabees, the Army Air Corps, Navajo code talkers, native workers, U.S. Coast Guard personnel, Army National Guard troops, and more. He tells about American relations and encounters with British, Australian, and New Zealander personnel.
Twining writes about the diseases, deprivation, and harsh conditions faced by the heroic personnel at Guadalcanal. But it's not all grim and serious. He offers colorful portraits of the people he served with and includes funny anecdotes--the book actually made me laugh out loud. Gen. Twining skilfully weaves interesting technical details about military tactics and gear into the compelling human story. Whether writing about techniques used to cool machine guns in the heat of battle or the merits of different boat loading techniques in an amphibious assault, Twining always offers some fascinating insights into the practical realities of war.
But what really makes this book remarkable, and even fun, is Twining's tone. Yes, he is a serious military professional, with respect and affection for the many remarkable men with whom he served. But his voice is also often quite feisty and cutting. He doesn't hold back when criticizing many instances of military stupidity and short-sightedness. At times his writing even has a blisteringly satiric edge. "No Bended Knee" is a spirited and superbly written addition to the glorious canon of American military memoirs.
More like 3.8 stars.......2002-02-02
I would say more like 3.8 stars than four but it is a great book worth the read. Filled with details I hadn't heard before, like how the came to have so many .50 cal machine guns in the face of massive shortages. But, and maybe some will disagree, and maybe I'm wrong and reading too much into it, General twinning mentions through the book that he is the highest ranking survivor of the campaign. He seemed to use that to take shots at people who can no longer defend themselves, and that turned me off. I don't want to take away from what he did, it was above and beyond the call,he is a true hero and I am grateful for his service. I just felt he should have left a few of his opinions out or written the book thirty years ago.
A humble man of incredible events.......2000-02-09
General Twining's account is more than first-person as that portends one who witnessed history. He made it on Guadalcanal. This book is a superior account for one who desires to understand how war plans are made, how to train a unit and how to motivate men to do what is not normally done. He treats us to an excellent first-person insight of how one plans, equips, trains, and leads in combat. It is not a book from someone who sits in an ivory tower and has a better way of doing business. Finally, he reminds us of why we have Marines. A force that truly is ready to do our nations dirty business so we can stay free and secure.

One of the world's leading authorities on repetitive strain injury tells you how to prevent, treat, and recover from RSI
Living with repetitive strain injury (RSI) can be painful, exasperating, and devastating. If you've given up hope that there is any help for your symptoms, if you've tried medications, wrist splints, neck braces, and exercises-and have had only temporary relief-this book is for you. Dr. Emil Pascarelli, one of the world's leading authorities on RSI, offers a comprehensive, prescriptive, practical, and long-awaited sequel to his bestselling Repetitive Strain Injury. You'll read all about the advances in RSI diagnosis, treatment, and prevention that have occurred since the publication of the previous book. Inside is welcome advice on:
- Recognizing the early signs and risk factors of RSI before they lead to a serious or debilitating condition
- Finding the right doctor, the right diagnosis, and the right treatment
- Preventing RSI using commonsense solutions such as keyboard techniques, posture, and workstation setup
- Employing practical methods to regain the use of muscles, nerves, and tendons that have been damaged by RSI

A Great Service.......2006-11-24
Dr. Pascarelli has done us all a great service by explaining the various mechanisms of
RSI. He has done it in a way that makes a great deal of sense to the layman and has
been very helpful to me personally. Kudos to Dr. Pascarelli for writing a book for the
patients and sufferers of RSI, and not another book that only doctors can understand.
An author with knowledge, a helpful but confusing book.......2004-09-26
In a publishing climate and a culture where behind every commercial publication, you just know lurks some author and editor with $$$ in her or his eyes--particularly in such how to books like become rich in real estate, write a best selling novel, how homeopathy cured my pet anaconda, I found this book extremely informative, passionate about its subject, sincere, clearly written but, the major defect is its structure; Dr. Pacarelli has taken a lifetime of experience (he says he's treated 6,000 cases of RSI) and provided a clear explanation of the many causes and types of the disorder. You will learn that "carpal tunnel" syndrome, which is the media's and layperson's term for disorders arising many from keyboarding (in the past typical sufferers were more likely to be musicians, sewers, sign language interpreters, etc.) is the diagnosis in only EIGHT percent of the cases of hand and arm damage. Dr Pascarelli explains it all: there are anatomical charts of the muscle system, the nerve system, photographs of hand & arm anomolies among sufferers, diagrams & photos of the wrong way and the right way to sit at a computer station, exercises, treatments, ergonomics, etc. You will learn why your average doctor, even orthopedists don't make proper diagnoses, even treatment plans, and often lack the knowledge of the big picture of RSI that affects not just nerves, but soft tissue, musculature, mood, and a lot more. You will be given a chapter of illustrated exercise routines. You will learn (and understand through experience)that splints are basically worthless and often harmful (except perhaps for sleeping). You will learn a host of treatment modalities--some described in detail, lesser mainstream ones like Alexander Technique, Feldenkreis, and Rolfing--which he is not adverse to trying. He also is up to date enough to discuss devices like voice activated software and the like. The problem arises in that after a discussion of the many types of RSI, the treatment plans he advocates are not specified as to which particular RSI syndrome you have. They are all lumped together. Nevertheless, this book is written in a compassionate, authoritive, supportive tone, although the fact that he suggests some people might just not ever get better from RSI is pretty sobering and pessimistic.

Allergy Self-Help Cookbook.......2006-07-08
I borrowed this book from our local library before purchasing it for my own use. I found that the first few editions were very helpful, but was disappointed that the writer eliminated a lot the substitution and nutrition information from later editions.
My family found that we do not care for rice flour, it's too gritty, however because my son, who is intolerant to all of the food categories listed in the title, can tolerate gluten products we were able to substitute spelt flour and amaranth flour for most of the receipes. Our favorite was the pizza receipe, we used grated Sheep Cheese, duck eggs, and rice milk as substitutes for the ingredients he cannot have.
It is a wonderful book.
Very informative.......2001-08-31
Although I did find that there are a few recipes which do contain ingredients that are supposedly not in this cookbook, I found the recipes interesting and tasty. If you ensure you use light buckwheat flour as recommended in applicable recipes and follow other hints provided by the author, I've found the recipes to be very good overall. This is a very good basic cookbook for people, like myself, who are just starting to discover the world of allergy free cooking/eating.
Very disappointing cookbook.......2000-12-29
Review by Linda Coss, author of "What's to Eat? The Milk-Free, Egg-Free, Nut-Free Food Allergy Cookbook".
Nine years ago, when my son was first diagnosed with multiple food allergies, this was the first cookbook I purchased. It proved to be very disappointing. The title of the book is quite misleading -- the book does not contain 325 recipes that are "free of wheat, milk, eggs, corn, yeast, sugar and other common food allergens." Many of the recipes contain one or more of these ingredients, and a large number of the recipes contain nuts, which is probably one of the most common food allergen there is.
I tried many of these recipes anyway, with absolutely no success. I realize that my family is not accustomed to "natural foods"-style cooking, but we still found these dishes unpalatable.
Misleading Title Left Me Disapointed.......2000-05-28
My child is allergic to nuts, which is certainly a common allegen. I was very disappointed to find nearly all of the baked goods recipes contain nuts. I did, however, find the general information in the first chapters to be helpful.
Not exactly 325 recipes.......2000-05-07
I felt the title and synopsis were just a little misleading. I can't eat ANY of the allergens listed. However, only a handful of the recipes don't have all of the allergens. A little disappointing because I had high hopes that this book would be helpful.

GREAT BOOK ON REPTILE DISEASES.......2003-08-12
A great book on the many diseases associated with lower vertebrates (reptiles.) A great resource.
Book Description
This book collects the best articles from recent issues of Fine Woodworking on the subject of finding and working with wood. Wood is the one thing that woodworkers have in common and there is endless fascination with the working properties of various species, how to select and season wood and how to store it. Wood has a way of behaving as if it’s still alive, moving with seasonal changes in temperature and humidity. Learning to work with it rather than against wood movement is critical to successful woodworking.

A good IBD overview for the newly diagnosed.......2003-02-18
This is a short yet informative overview of inflammatory bowel disease. The possible causes, research developments, available treatments and surgical options are discussed. It is by no means a definitive text. However, it is a good place to start if you or a loved one have just been diagnosed with IBD. It explains IBD's vocabulary in easy-to-understand terms. It discusses the different forms of IBD and the various courses these diseases can take. I definitely needed this book to supplement the information I gleaned from my doctors. I had a much clearer idea of what to expect after reading it. This book also focuses on coping skills, alternative medicine and dietary advice. An appendix contains recommended titles for more detailed reading and provides contact information for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation.
Good Thing in a Small Package.......2000-07-04
This slim volume by co-authors Zonderman (a writer with Crohns Disease) and his gastroenterologist Vender packs a lot of punch in a brief amount of time. Very up to date in terms of medication information and surgery, the authors also do an excellent job of describing the symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease and WHY you are feeling this way (something I've yet to come across in any other book on IBD). I was disappointed in the primitive line drawings used to illustrate the book and in the negative attitude toward some alternative medical treatments discussed in the "mind/body" chapter (although I was pleased to see its inclusion). The authors should be commended for approaching the emotional aspects of IBD in a forthright manner and the book would be an appropriate addition to any IBD library.
Book Description
"It is estimated that as many as one million Americans have IBD [inflammatory bowel disease] -- with that number evenly split between Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis"
Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America
Crohn's and Colitis: Understanding the Facts About IBD is written by a leading expert in the field and provides the most current and significant information on these conditions. The book answers important questions and covers topics such as:
- What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease?
- What are the symptoms?
- How do you get Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis?
- What to expect when you have IBD?
- Dietary treatment
- Drug therapy
- Surgery
- Psychological factors
- Children with IBD, and
- Alternative medicinal therapies.
Learning as much as possible about the condition is an important step toward taking charge and alleviating the negative effects of IBD on daily life. With this book, patients will gain a better understanding of diagnosis and treatment and begin to lead useful and productive lives. While there is no cure at this time for either condition, Dr. Steinhart's expertise and realistic advice will go a long way to improving a patient's health and quality of life and providing reassurance to their loved ones.
Customer Reviews:
Look elsewhere - ambitious efforts falls short, shallow and without helpful information.......2006-05-28
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic diseases which vary widely between patients and over time in the same patient -- so writing a helpful book about understanding and managing these two related disorders is an ambitious undertaking. Unfortunately, Dr. Steinhart's book falls well short of the goal, as the book does not have enough information to be helpful to a patient.
The text is too superficial and general. For example, the text devotes only 15 pages to discussing the causes of these two, distinct chronic illnesses -- which is surprising since the causes are not scientifically known and substantial lay controversy exists regarding potential causes like the bacteria that causes Johne's disease in cattle. Those pages include almost no details regarding the scientific bases for the consideration of the potential causes nor the learned rejection or ambivalence regarding some of those potential causes.
The discussion of dietary strategies is equally frustrating. Diet and medication are likely to be the two areas that most patients are interested in as well as the two areas that patient knowledge will be most helpful for (i.e., the patient can do little with knowledge of the cause but quite a lot with knowledge of dietary strategies). As Dr. Steinhart notes, no one diet is accepted as efficacious. However, the doctor devotes little time to the exploration of the many diets popular with the lay experts that patients are likely to be curious about - and a terse rejection is unlikely to be helpful to a curious patient. The one exception appears to be lactose-intolerance issues - if the text was devoted to other dietary concerns in the same way it addressed lactose intolerance, the book would have been much better
Additionally, much of the advice is frustratingly fruitless. Dr. Steinhart counsels repeatedly (and not surprisingly) that patients should seek advice from their doctors and not from Internet sources. However, any dutiful investigator will quickly find that the most fruitful source of detailed information is the Internet. Obviously, credibility issues abound, but doctors are not beyond mistake either. Dr. Steinhart does not provide a useful way to evaluate credibility or a listing of Internet sources likely (or unlikely) to be useful.
Also, perhaps things are different in Canada, but in the United States it is not likely to be very productive to seek to learn everything from your doctor. Most doctors meetings are quick, and the doctor has a list of things she'd like to accomplish. The time available for general inquiry is usually short, and appointments are often infrequent. The doctor can answer some questions or point the patient down the right research path, but the good patient will conduct a great deal of outside research - indeed, that is the point of books like this.
Similarly, the reader is advised that it is generally the case (hence, presumably not always) that denial, avoiding any response, and acting out of anger are "less successful" ways of coping. Although there may well be cases where denial, avoidance, and anger are successful, most of us would generally assume otherwise, and don't need to be advised as much. If, indeed, there are times when these "strategies" care called for, Dr. Steinhart provides no suggestion of what criteria to look for or what questions to ask.
In sum, Dr. Steinhart's book is an extensive exercise in "Ask your doctor," not particularly useful advice for the sufferers of these two chronic illnesses - 2 stars.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
On the first day of Francisco de San Antonio's trial before the Spanish Inquisition in Toledo in 1625, his interrogators asked him about his parentage. His real name, he stated, was Abram Rubén, and he had been born in Fez of Jewish parents. How then, Inquisitors wanted to know, had he become a Christian convert? Why had a Hebrew alphabet been found in his possession? And what was his business at the Court in Madrid? "He was asked," according to his dossier, "for the story of his life." His response, more than ten folios long, is one of the many involuntary autobiographies created by the logic of the Inquisition that today provides rich insights into both the personal lives of the persecuted and the social, cultural, and political realities of the age.
In Inquisitorial Inquiries, Richard Kagan and Abigail Dyer have collected, translated, and annotated six of these autobiographies from a diverse group of prisoners, five tried in Europe and one in Mexico. Each of the autobiographies has been selected to represent a particular political or social issue, while at the same time raising more intimate questions about the religious, sexual, political, or national identity of the prisoners. Among them are a politically incendiary prophet; a self-proclaimed hermaphrodite charged with having violated the sacrament of marriage for having married a woman; a female convert to Catholicism who betrayed her Jewish origins by serving as a rabbi and preaching heretical doctrine in the New World; and a morisco, an Islamic convert to Catholicism who claimed to have been circumcised against his will. In their introduction, Kagan and Dyer stress the "collaborative" nature of these texts, stressing the coercion involved and the purpose of the interrogations that solicited them. Making these invaluable primary sources available for the first time in English, Inquisitorial Inquiries will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of early modern Europe, colonial Latin America, gender studies, and religious history.
