Book Description
For much of World War II, Germany's most threatening maritime force was the U-boat arm. Their deadly attacks on Allied supply lines are well documented, but they also carried out numerous clandestine operations, landing in neutral countries such as Ireland and Spain, and along the U.S. and Canadian shorelines to conduct espionage and sabotage. North African landings aided Rommel's Afrika Korps. In this fascinating book, U-boat historian Jak Mallmann-Showell has gathered together a collection of firsthand accounts and remarkable photographs--many of them previously unpublished--showing how these landings were executed. This fresh perspective on the Kriegsmarine and their world-wide exploits between 1939 and 1945 will be a welcome acquisition for anyone interested in the naval campaigns of World War II.

Walcott the man and scientist.......2001-12-27
The author researched his subject over decades and the book represents a labor of love. Geologists, of course, will appreciate the subject, however, it will be of interest to all who follow the history of science. Ultimately, the book is not about rocks and fossils, but about a person. The author weaves in excerpts from Walcott's extensive diaries, so that we follow Walcott's thoughts, his methods and dealing with adversity. As a teenage amateur collector of fossils, Walcott came to the attention of such greats as Agassiz. While working on a farm, he was eventually recognized for his talent and was hired by the newly formed Geological Survey in 1879. He was subsequently sent to the Grand Canyon. In 1882-1883, he spent more than a cold winter month in remote and rugged areas, some never previously visited by other than prehistoric Native Americans. He displayed discipline and fortitude by recordinmg detailed and comprehensive data under hazrdous conditions and extremewheather. Walcott may not have finsihed high-school, but eventually became the Director of the U.S. Gerological Survey and Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. While starting his career as a "scientist," he was adept at dealing with congress and adminsitrations. His administrative duties did not prevent him from continued major contributions to science.
Walcott Part One.......1999-12-14
Charles Doolittle Walcott was a great man... a hard working, self taught scientist and dedicated administrator. Unfortunately, in Yochelson's overblown biography we are subjected to detailed descriptions of every ailment suffered by Walcott and his immediate family and after 468 pages are abruptly told that the final 20 years of his life constitutes another story. The two decades that include Walcott's tenure as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution represents a period that would certainly be of greater interest to most readers than the day-planner chronology that occurs here. At times, Yochelson had this reader captivated with accounts of Walcott's Cambrian discoveries with a fine presentation of the rigors of fieldwork in the remote west of the late 1890's. Most fossil collectors and armchair paleontologists will enjoy these sections. I only wish the bulk of this biography was equally compelling and completed the story of Walcott's remarkable life.
This book ain't never gonna be a bestseller but. . ........1999-03-01
Yochelson does detail the early career of an important American scientist by bringing together all of the relevant source documents. The context is the XIXth c. amalgamation of classical geology and paleontology. From the perspective of the late XXth c. we see the geological debates in which Charles Walcott was involved as our "big picture" stuff--the ordering and naming of rock and time sequences, major rock correlations, index fossils.
This book is not literature, but rather, an example of the meat-and-potatoes variety of biography that is long on factual reportage and short on speculation and imputation. Nonetheless Walcott, the man, shines through as the last of a dying breed--a decent, unpretentious and hard-working scientist.
Readers need to be aware the book stops well short of Walcott's collecting trips to the Burgess Shale in Yoho National Park, British Columbia.

I could have started a review of this book in several ways:.......2001-09-23
Monumental
(In the sense that Walcott's eternal busy-ness is a monument to human endeavour and achievement. And it's a loooong book.)
A necessary first biography
(In the sense that it sets out the chronology of a life, but in no way sufficiently addresses any one of Walcott's multiplicity of interests. This biography is data for other biographers, historians and historians of science to use for reference.)
Unfulfilling
(In the sense that a casual fan of the Burgess Shale fossils will be unsatisfied with respect to the explication of their significance to science, and to the history of science.)
Tearful
(In the sense of having read 1022 pages [including the first volume of Walcott's early years] of what is essentially a daily diary, and knowing that those diary entries would ultimately cease with his death. The day-by-day, season-by-season chronology develops a rhythm and momentum--a stateliness--into which the reader finds himself or herself drawn. Speaking for myself, I was unprepared for any of it to end. [Thank you, Dr Y!])
Readers need to be patient with Yochelson. He explicitly discusses his approach (page 435) in this first full biography of a truly huge life-Yochelson felt compelled to choose between chronology and theme. He opted for the (thankless, lifeless) former. Some readers will find this approach to be unsatisfactory.
Having now read both volumes I feel replete, as well as depleted. I have two wishes:
1. That others (not excluding Ellis Yochelson himself) will take up the themes of Walcott's interests (geology, paleontology, conservation, forestry, photography, aviation, business, art) and treat each of them in a dedicated way.
2. That the Smithsonian takes steps to return to the Dominion of Canada all of its fossil collections made by Charles Doolittle Walcott. (Yep, that's my wish.) (disclosure: I am a US citizen and taxpayer)
(apologies for length)

Misguided claims.......2005-08-27
This book makes some pretty false assumptions based on hyped, unscientific claims. Go to the reviews for "The Whole Soy Story," by Kaayla T. Daniel, and you will get previews of a book that alarmingly shows soy products to be a danger to health. Evidence is mounting that soy is an anti-nutrient, that in fact it is an extremely unhealthy substance. The way soy is manufactured, processed, and chemically altered, it has no remaining "food" value to speak of.
Not as good as I hoped.......2005-01-24
Far too many of the tofu recipes in this book consist of taking a block of tofu, slicing it, frying the slices and then covering them with sauce. (Tofu with Mole Sauce, I'm looking at you!)
Other recipes fail because they simply try to replace meat with tofu or tempeh, rather than trying to be completely new recipes in which the soy product can shine on its own, rather than as a substitute.
So far, there are only 2 recipes that I would recommend - the Spinach Burgers and the Brown Rice Pilaf. The rest? Meh. I'm still looking for a really good tofu cookbook.
Healthy cooking with great flavor.......2004-07-23
I purchased this book shortly after switching to a vegetarian diet. What a life saver, especially to the novice vegetarian!
Most vegetarian cookbooks I had found relied upon excess cheese for protien. Or worse yet, many books that claim to be vegetarian use such things as chicken broth, fish, shellfish, and other products which contain animal products (which in my book is NOT vegetarian).
This book is different from the others. It shows many ways to use soy products; not relying just upon tofu, but introducing tempeh, soy milk, and soy cheese. Yes! There is more to a vegetarian diet that just tofu (which is quite good when prepared correctly). And the variety of recipes are quite nice. The recipes cover salads, main dishes, and even some desserts. You can prepare an entire meal just from this book.
The instructions are easy to follow and the resulting food is quite tasty!
Whole Soy Joy.......2004-02-10
What a pleasure! -- a creative, easy-to-follow, healthy cookbook with recipes that TASTE GREAT! Greenberg leaves no soy question unanswered, from Soy Split Pea Soup to Tofu Tiramisu. The recipes are clear and very innovative, covering ethnic foods from all over the world, like Pumpkin Tofu Cheesecake and Soy Potstickers. Every recipe also provides nutrition information on calories, carbs, cholesterol, fiber, sodium, etc. As a food historian, I appreciate the intelligence and attention to detail in this book and what must have been years coming up with and testing all these creative recipes. An appendix on where to get soy products and information is also very helpful, as are the comparisons between soy products and dairy, other beans, etc. It's a great book for when you want to eat healthy but don't want to compromise on flavor. Mangia!
Lots of neat ideas.......2003-11-22
I bought this cookbook a few years ago when I had just decided to eliminate eating meat/fish etc from my diet. At the time I wasn't "ready" for all the tofu etc but I gradually grew to love it and I'm so glad I keptthis cookbook around. It has so many tasty recipes - there are nice bean salads, hearty stews, a paella, desserts etc. Each recipe has nutritional contents too. One thing that turns some people off is that many of the recipes that are take-offs on previously meat-laden recipes are called by their meat names (e.g. Soy Sausage Potato Chowder or the Soy Meat Loaf). It doesn't phase me though and sometimes helps me to get my husband to try it. Lots of interesting recipes for tempeh. Some recipes (like the curried eggplant) use soy yogurt too. Its a fun cookbook and so far so good in terms of being tasty. Definitely recommend this one!

Not just for dieters.......2007-03-31
I received this cookbook as a Christmas gift a couple years ago from my son who is a professional chef. We've notated many recipes in it as "Very Good" and "Excellent" ... favorites are the Salmon with Lemon Linguine and Mediterranean Fish Stew. If you enjoy cooking and good eating, you'll want this book in your collection. It's not just for dieters.
Awesome recipes!.......2006-07-01
If you LOVE to cook, you will love this book! Everytime I make a recipe from Low-Fat Living, my house is filled with such wonderful aromas. I have found the recipes easy to make, but some do keep you busy in the kitchen, which makes me very happy! Leslie's bread recipes are to die for. Some of my favorite recipes are the Cream of Cauliflower soup, Asian noodles with chicken, Asian dipping sauce, Artichoke and Olive spread, Asian Coleslaw with Orange Ginger dressing etc!!!!! Her recipes are VERY generous in portion size and so good. Her husband Robert K. Cooper has a book also called Low-Fat living that is more the technical side, but has more of Leslie's recipes! I have both books and read and re-read them all the time!
GUILT FREE EATING.......2003-09-19
I love this cookbook. In fact, I've just finished cooking the Southwest Turkey Meat Loaf in the book which has only 254 calories and 7 grams of fat per serving. I was actually searching for a PART II of this book when I decided to write a review while visiting the web. You'll love this book. The dishes are delicious. If no one ever mentioned low fat you certainly wouldn't be able to tell by either the texture or taste of the food. I have now for the last few months cooked strictly from this cookbook. The dishes keep my family satisfied and I'm excited about the variations. Some of the favorites we have are the Skillet Chicken with Mushrooms & Peppers, Buttermilk-Battered Baked Chicken, Crunchy Pita Strips, and the Sour Cream Apple Crumb Kuchen (okay so I ate it with ice cream). I love this book!!!!
Low Fat Living Works!.......2001-07-05
But only if you read the book and use the great recipes. :-)
Delicious and Delighfully Easy Recipes!.......2001-05-19
I am not a big fan of cooking. Opening a jar of spaghetti sauce to top some pasta seems like enough effort. I am also as happy with a simple piece of grilled chicken as I am with one smothered in rich sauces, so cooking books are not a high priority for me. I glanced through this book at the book store only because I felt the authors other book "Low Fat Living" was excellent. To my surprise I was immediately attracted to the simplicity of the recipes, variety and their appeal. The book presents foods that I enjoy eating, that are easy to prepare and it cuts the fat and calories. So enjoyable fare like chicken fingers, Mexican dishes, pasta creations and deserts etc. are a snap to make and healthy to eat. The author Leslie Cooper includes a lot of helpful information such as the hands on time, calories, servings, fiber, fat etc. So the foods prepared can be used if you are on a diet program like Weight Watchers (you can figure out the points)or need to watch your choleserol etc. Cooper includes items such as Mixed Greens with Pecan Vinaigrette, Miso Soup, Swiss Broccoli Soup, Pan Seared Crab Cakes, Sesame Chicken Satays etc. She also includes substitutions for some items. I found the ingredients easy to obtain. Most already in my cupboard or fridge. The beginning of the book devotes about 100 pages to ways to cook for health, fat trimming swaps, reading labels, calorie burning, stress blockers etc. Lots of useful information here. The book is wonderful on its own or as a companion to the "Low Fat Living" book, Leslie cowrote with her husband. It's important to note that this book and the other one is not about eating no fat or little fat. Its about eating healthy fats in moderation. Though the book is not spiral bound it does lie flat for ease of use. The only drawback with the book is the lack of pictures. Overall though its a super nice book and one I will refer to often for quick, healthy recipes!
Book Description
Graced with illustrations by the author, Crane Music introduces the two North American crane species. The sandhill, most often seen, is within easy reach of bird-watchers in the center of the continent. Less visible is the whooping crane, struggling back from near extinction. Paul Johnsgard follows these elegant birds through a year’s cycle, describing their seasonal migrations, natural habitats, breeding biology, call patterns—angelic to the bird-lover’s ear—and fascinating dancing. The largest and most spectacular migratory concentration of cranes happens each spring when the Platte River valley becomes the staging ground for an amazing gathering of four hundred thousand to five hundred thousand sandhills en route from the South to the Arctic tundra. Johnsgard describes this incredible event as well as memorable personal encounters with the cranes. His knowledge of them transcends natural history, covering their importance in religion and mythology.

I loved this book.......2007-07-12
This book was very helpful to me when creating my own large scale designs; her ideas on how to bring depth and perspective to a larger scene is fantastic. Especially interesting for me was the land and city-scapes. Some of the other styles were less appealing but the approach steps still added value.
A guide to creating machine-stitched applique from realistic scenes.......2005-10-07
Creating still lifes in quilts is becoming more recognized as a fine quilt art and Margaret Cusack's Picture Your World In Applique: Creating Unique Images With Fabric is the place to turn to for instruction. Use memories and pictures from life and transform them into lovely appliqued pictures with a guide to creating machine-stitched applique from realistic scenes. From selecting pictures to cutting and stitching fabrics, Picture Your World In Applique covers all the moves.
Warm and wonderful---I love it........2005-09-11
This book will give you important information on work safety, image and color selection, and stitching techniques. It also tells the story of a successful artist and how she works. The book has colorful examples of her commissioned work and how she brought them to be. Margaret Cusack's images speak of the loving and supportive family that is literally part of her fiber---and artistic inspiration. I bought three copies and will probably get a few more to give as additional gifts.
Fantastic book - great projects that look terrific!.......2005-08-26
I love this book. If you're interested in this kind of art, this book will appeal to amateurs, professionals, or just folks who appreciate art in general.

Customer Reviews:
Okay, but not as good as the first one.......2004-01-08
People hoping to gain an understanding of how to write comic books really couldn't find a better source than "Panel One," the previous volume edited by Nat Gertler collecting comic book scripts and roughs by various creators. "Panel Two" is more of the same, but not as polished. There are more of the "thumbnail" versions of scripts, and some that are so detailed it's almost like reading the comic itself. Standouts in this book are Gail Simone's hilarious script for "Killer Princesses" and Scott McCloud's thumbnail script for "Zot!" (This was one of the super-detailed ones, it had me wanting to find the issue that followed it to find out how the story ended!) Others are interesting, such as the classic "Fatman" script -- but that one, unfortunately, was missing several pages. It was interesting to see the juxtoposition of the original script with the finished pages, however, so we were able to compare what changes the artist had made.
Overall, though, this book doesn't really add much or tell you anything you didn't know after reading "Panel One." It's an interesting addition, and certainly not a bad purchase, but it's not something you need or that helps as much as the previous book.

A new survey of an artist who served as a creative figure.......2004-07-09
MARK GERTLER is the first biography of the artist to be published in thirty years, and Sarah MacDougall provides a new survey of an artist who served as a creative figure for contemporaries D.H. Lawrence and Aldous Huxley. His haunting pictures were collected during his time and he was a part of London society; yet his ongoing lack of happiness led to his eventual alienation and suicide.

Works of witness to the Polish Jewish world destroyed.......2006-01-24
This book contains selections from seventy of the more than five- hundred Memorial books of Jewish communities in Poland. As the editors make clear in their introduction 'the memorial books' aim to make certain that the destroyed world of Polish Jewry will not be forgotten.
The books provide in some sense a record of the town they are written about, and often a picture of the people themselves. They connect up with the Jewish traditional Literature of Lamentation. In the words of the authors, " The memorial books came to be seen as substitute gravestones. " The memorial books are structured on a continuum from simple acts of naming to highly elaborated acts of narrative." The authors make clear that even a list of names serves the purpose of remembering. In their introduction the authors quote Shlomo Pultusker," When I review in thought my life in Rozhan, events, splinterrs of half- forgotten memories, appear before my eyes. People , formerly flesh and blood and everyday Jews, were transformed by the tragic events into figures similar to heroes in the dramas one reads.Of all the people of that time, individuals stand out whose names stick in memory..And to these people, most of whose remains lie in no cemetary, may my humble words about them serve as an eternal monument and redeem them from merciless oblivion. With trembling and fear of God I write my modest words, which are no more than a pale reflection of what was in reality."
Three million Polish Jews were murdered in the Shoah.
These books are the fragmented, inadequate witness of what they were.
From a Ruined Garden.......2002-06-17
Fantastic book. Reading it is like exploring the vanished world of polish stetels. Although I found only one chapter regarding Szczebrzeszyn I highly recomend the book. I wish there would be more translations of Yizkor Books.
an excellent presentation - a MUST BUY - MUST READ.......1999-04-05
This is a truly splendid compendium of excerpts from various memorial books written after the Holocaust to commemorate the vanished world of Eastern European Jewish life in the shtetlach of Poland. I read it in a sitting and will re-read it in the future. For anyone with the slightest interest in this vanished world, I URGE you to buy this book - give it to your friends, as well.
This book vividly describes a destroyed world.......1998-09-22
Rarely is a book published that causes an entirely new genre of studies to open up. This was the result of the first edition of this book printed in 1983. Before 1983, some scholars, librarians, and genealogical researchers knew of yizkher bikher in general, but up to that time there had not been a major focus on these books as social, historical, and genealogical sources of first-hand knowledge of destroyed communities, to some extent because of language barriers. But as more lay persons began searching their roots in the late 1970s, with interest building in the 1980s and exploding in the 1990s, they started to tap into these remarkable books. The publication of From a Ruined Garden, containing over 70 translated excerpts from Polish yizkor books, illuminated for many lay persons the lost world depicted in these books from which they had been cut off because they could not read them in their original languages, primarily Yiddish and Hebrew. The first edition has long been out of print, but again, in another bit of fortunate timing, a second, expanded edition has been published.
Reassembles the mosaic of pre-Holocaust Jewish life.......1998-05-26
What this book does, like nothing else, is to recreate the diversity of Jewish life in Eastern Europe prior to the Holocaust. Carefully selected excerpts from hundreds of memorial books in the YIVO library, this book isn't just about some shtetl, but about Zionists and Misnagdim and town councils and about town that, well, "most towns have a town fool, our town was so small that our village idiot was only half-crazy."
