Few figures in modern French history have aroused more controversy than Marshal Philippe Pétain, who rose from obscurity to great fame in the First World War only to fall into infamy during the dark days of Nazi occupation in World War II. Pétain’s brilliant theories of firepower and flexible defense, as well as his deep empathy for the soldiers of France and the horrific trials they endured on a daily basis, mark him as one of the greatest Allied generals of World War I. Yet today he is best remembered as the nearly senile marshal who was handed the reins of power in France in the midst of the disastrous 1940 campaign and tasked with seeking terms from Nazi Germany. His leadership of Vichy France from 1940 to 1944 and his postwar conviction of treason and lifetime exile to the Ile d'Yeu made him a scapegoat for the nation.

This later perception forever tainted Pétain’s military reputation as a soldier who served France his entire life and led the French Army through the crucible of Verdun, the morale crisis of 1917, and on to final victory in the Great War. He was despised for his actions as an octogenarian in June 1940. With the bulk of the French Army already destroyed and Paris itself wide-open to attack, Pétain, then eighty-four, immediately sought an armistice with Germany to halt further bloodshed. While others fled, Pétain took what he considered the braver course by staying and doing what he could to safeguard the remnants of his army and his nation. So began his descent into collaboration, treason, and the destruction of all that he had accomplished and stood for throughout his life.

A Helpful Sampling of Darwin Correspondence.......2007-06-01

In May of 2007, the Darwin Correspondence Project, based at Cambridge University, announced that it had placed an additional 5,000 largely unpublished Darwin letters onto its excellent web site (darwin-online.org.uk). This website is a treasurehouse of the first order for anyone interested in Darwin and Victornian intellectual history. Of course, Cambridge University Press has published a number of volumes in its Darwin correspondence series. However, for a quick dip into Darwin's letters, to get a feel from what is there, this collection covering the period up to the publication in 1859 of "Origin" is a handy introduction. The book has a Foreword by the late Stephen Jay Gould which places the letters into the context of what as going on in Victorian science. The editor, Frederick Burkhardt, has added a helpfujl Introduction and "Editor's Note." The letters are in chronological order, the first being written in 1825 while Darwin was studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh. Next are letters relating to Cambridge, the offer to make the Beagle voyage, the voyage to South America, and Homeward Bound. So there is plenty of coverage of Darwin's epic trip. But the letters continue after his return up until publication of the Origin. The editor has included some helpful notes, a Biographical Register, Bibliography and Bibliographical Note, and suggestions for further reading (a bit out of date since the book was put together in 1996). All together a very nice and inexpensive package loaded with interesting information and providing the opportunity to come more directly into contact with that most scintilating of minds, that of Darwin.

I recommend this autobiography to anyone interested in any field of science, or anyone who wants to read about one of the most influential men of all time. It is a very well written autobiography, and is easy to follow. It contains material to catch the interest of anyone form the biological scientist in the field to the average person making up their summer reading list. For the student that has taken any biology class that talked about Darwin, it adds an entire new dimension to his theories when you feel like you know a part of the man by reading his very words. I would recommend this autobiography, to anyone who wants to read a well-written autobiography about the life of an extraordinary scientist and man.

This is volume two of a two volume set.

In choosing letters for publication the author has been largely guided by the wish to illustrate his father's personal character. But his life was so essentially one of work, that a history of the man could not be written without following closely the career of the author. Thus it comes about that the chief part of the book falls into chapters whose titles correspond to the names of his books.

Charles Darwin, the discoverer of natural selection, was born at Shrewsbury. His grandfather was Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802), physician, radical, free-thinker), his father Dr. Robert Waring Darwin, F.R.S. (1766-1848), and his mother was the daughter of Josiah Wedgewood (1730-1795). After five years at Shrewsbury grammar school, Darwin studied medicine at Edinburgh University (1825-27) and then, with a view to the Church, entered Christ's College, Cambridge (1828). Even before he went to Cambridge, the young Darwin took numerous natural history excursions and delivered his first scientific paper.

At Kent he devoted his attention to the great work of his life -- the problem of the origin of species. After five years' work he allowed himself to speculate on the subject and drew up some short notes in 1842 which were enlarged into a series of conclusions in 1844. These conclusions were to become the principle of natural selection and the germ of Darwinian theory. Darwin delayed the publication of his findings.

Darwin will be remembered as the leader of evolutionary biology. Although he was not the originator of the theory of evolution, nor even the first to apply the notion of descent to plants and animals, Darwin was clearly the first thinker to gain widespread acceptance among nineteenth century biologists.

Darwin died suddenly, 19 April 1882, and was buried in Westminster Abbey.

A really informative introduction to Darwin, his ideas, his works, and his impact on science and society. Young people will get a great deal out this volume and will find it perfect for writing reports or preparing for classroom discussions. On the other hand, adults unfamiliar with Darwin's ideas will benefit from the author's impressive job organizing and explaining some potentially difficult to understand material.

This is a great book - for less than I'd expect from a quality hardback. It will give you the exercises and the knowledge - you need to provide the effort and motivation :-). A good value.

poor production distracts from good information.......2006-11-06

I have several gripes about this book:

1. The page layout of the 1st edition is terrible. The type size is too big, and the paragraph length is too long, making it difficult to just sit down and read. It looks like it was made using Microsoft Word, which detracts from the professionalism of the content. Cheesy clip-art doesn't help. This book would really have benefitted from a more professional editor and publisher.

2. Like another reviewer said, there are a number of typos, misspelling and instances of poor grammar. This again distracts from the "authority" of this text.

3. Some paragraph text was missing altogether, such as the "Ultimate Hangover Solution" in that section: it is about 1" of empty paragraph. So, it's unknown what the recommended "ultimate" solution for apres-ski hangovers.

That said, it does have excellent information about how to get in shape for skiing, and to improve your fitness while targeting skiing as a hobby/sport. There are good photos and diagrams, as well as step-by-step instructions for performing exercises properly. Hooge is a young author (in his early 30's); I think a 2nd "tidied-up" edition would really make this book worthwhile. Hopefully the 2nd edition (released in Oct 2006) will live up to this expectation.

I'm giving it only 3 stars due to the poor production; however the content seems pretty solid.

Be aware that this is a total fitness guide.
You need to be prepared to commit to a complete exercise program involving plenty of gym work as well as following a recommended nutrition program.

Like the other reviews, this book has very few information about skiing, but it is very detailed and informative about land training before the skiing season. Actually many of the methods described in this book can be used for other sports or just for being a healthy person. So if you are looking for something for actual skiing techniques this is not your number one book. But for land training it can be...

Lots of easy and tasty recipes.......2007-01-12

I bought this book 10 years ago and have used it time and time again to find quick, easy and tasty sauce recipes for pasta. The book contains so many recipes that I don't think I will ever make even a fraction of them. The best thing about the book is the recipes are listed in the table of contents under the main ingredients so you can easily find for example sauces made from cream which starts on page 3-1. Also, most of the sauce recipes do not require a long list of ingredients so they are easy and inexpensive to make.

I was disappointed when I recieved this book. It does contain a large amount of recipes and variations. However it seems more suited to a generation that knew nothing of nutrition and generally healthy eating. While I understand that not everything is 'cooking light' there seems to be zero consideration or mention of these modern day issues and concerns - no healthy alternatives seem to exist.

My advice is to keep shopping there are a lot of good alternatives available that cover all aspects of the sauce subject.

Mamma Mia .... atts a goooood book ..........2002-06-27

If you can't find a sauce in this book that you will love then, my friend, you must want to have sauces made with crushed flies!

The book is divided into 26 chapters based on the main ingredient for the sauces that you may be lloking for. ie. sauces made from buttur/olive oil; cream and meat or seafood;cream;;nutmeats;tomatoes;tomatoes and meat;uncooked cheese ;vegetrables ... ecte ect

Each of the recepies is clear cut SUPER FAST in most cases ( except the simmering for some sauces) and, MOST IMPORTANT, the author gives us a full list of the ingredient options.

I just made the four cheese sauce and if you can't find the Fontina, Bel Paeze or Gorgonzola cheese the recipie calls for he gives us a list of other cheeses to replace the ones asked for in the ITALIAN recepie. WOW .... you know there are very very few cookbooks with that kind of simple foresight...

I think the book must weigh in at over 500 pages ... has NO pictures (a disadvantage in my book) is all written in large capital lettesr and leaves a section for you to write when you tried the recepie and if you loved it or hated it ...

If you like pasta dishes this book is a MUST buy .........

A sauce for every occasion and then some..............2001-08-21

I have given this cookbook as a gift over and over since the sauces in this book are delicious and most are simple to make. Whenever I have some extra ingrediants I don't want to go to waste, I can always find a sauce to use them in and I have never been disappointed! It is "the greatest collection of pasta sauces ever in one book."

This book is very good for the new cook or the old pro. I got it as a wedding gift but I didn't cook at the time. As I got used to the idea of being in a kitchen this book really helped me out a lot. I know use it a lot and find myself wanting to give it to all new cooks!

I really like Elian's artwork in needlepoint. She has a good sense of combining colours to bring out the most beautiful floral display. This book was not a disappointment. There are already a few projects that I would like to complete some day. It really is one of my favorite needlepoint book.

Pat Ross gives interesting information about flower arranging, but the real charm of this little gem is in the illustrations by Carolyn Bucha. Her watercolors are glorious. Next time you want to send flowers to cheer up a friend, give them everlasting ones in the form of this book!

This book is written for the layperson and, with the possible exception of the chemistry discussion, should be accessible to any reader. Gray is the first author (that I know of) to present a plausible electrochemical mechanism for homeopathy, based largely on research in quantum electrochemistry in the last three years. But that shouldn't scare off the average reader, as most of the chapters explain research results in terms understandable to non-scientists.

It is 1938. Berta Weissberger, twelve years old, lives in Hindenburg, Germany, with her mother and older sister. Her father has already left for America, and the family is awaiting the arrival of their American visas.

These hopes and plans are destroyed at the end of October 1938, however, when Jews are rounded up, loaded onto trucks, and driven to the Polish border. They are forced to cross a river into Poland and ordered, "Keep walking and do not turn back. Anyone attempting to turn back will be shot."

So begins Bertel's six-year terrifying odyssey in Nazi-occupied Poland. While living a life of constant vigilance and fear, Bertel grows into womanhood. Again and again, Providence steps in and saves her, guiding her to the right person or place.

It is Betty Lauer's abiding faith in a higher power that enabled her to survive while hiding in plain sight, during the dark night of Nazi Germany, and to tell this remarkable story of great evil and of the nobility of the few who dared to defy the evildoers. An extraordinary story of strength, resilience, hope, and salvation.

WW II in Europe from a girl's heart.......2007-05-16

This book is the choice of two reading groups and many individuals anticipating the visit by author Betty Lauer to our area. It is a vivid and gripping account of events in Poland and Germany of World War II from inside the feelings and emotions of an intelligent, courageous, and sensitive Jewish teenager. It is captivating reading and a major contribution to the documentation of the Holocast. Suitable for all ages.

An obstacle was the small print and very tight binding that made it difficult to keep the book open.

Written in a straight-forward style with at least surface artlessness, I found this an engrossing account of a teenage Jewish girl's struggle to survive in Poland after the Nazis took over. While it does not have the overpowering aura of authenticity that is inherent in Victor Klemperer's I Will Bear Witness (Volume I read by me on 11 June 1999 and Volume II on 7 Apr 2000), I was caught up by this account and though one knew she survived (else the book would not exist) one had to remind oneself of that as she went from situation to situation. I think it necessary for one to remind oneself repeatedly of the inhuman behavior of so many people during the Hitler years, lest one take civil liberty for granted. She does meet people who are human but also there are many who behaved in a way which they surely have regretted ever since--I hope.

While attending a Bat Mitzvah of a relative, I was fortunate to meet and talk with Betty Lauer, the author of "Hiding in Plain Sight". I told her that I enjoyed the book immensely but found it hard to believe that she could experience so many crises. She said"Believe me: it is true" I said that it must have been very difficult for her to change her faith. She said that was very easy because both of our faiths belive in one God. She is a very upbeat woman.

Magnificent attenton to detail and an almost photographic like narrative characterise this Un-run of the mill Holocaust memoir. The author Betty is a modest teenager who is bold while being matter of fact and subtle- and she is able to convey with great nuance what is felt like to navigate the Nazi oocupied Poland during the height of the madness as a teenager .This lengthy memoir, a tale of youthful triumph against such huge odds, is satisfying and keeps the reader on the edge of one's seat.

Hiding In Plain Sight: The Incredible True Story Of A German-Jewish Teenager's Struggle To Survive In Nazi-Occupied Poland is the story of Bertle Weissberger, a twelve-year-old Jewish girl who lived with her mother Ilona and sister Eva in Hindenburg, Germany when on October 28th, 1938 the Nazis began rounding up all the Jews in Hindenburg and forcibly expelled Bertel and her family into Poland. There for the next seven years Bertel learned to speak Polish, changed her appearance, used falsified documents, and lived as a young Polish woman under an assumed name in her struggle to survive the Nazi holocaust. Hiding In Plain Sight is a testament to the enduring human spirit and a welcome, highly recommended addition to the growing library of Holocaust Studies and eye-witness biographies.
