John Logie Baird: A Life
ASIN: 1841830631 |
Book Description
A heavily illustrated autobiography of John Logie Baird, the central figure in the invention and development of television. His memoirs are written with blunt candor and caustic wit. They cover the wild escapades of his early business career and the dramatic pioneering days of his scientific work, when he transmitted the very first television pictures ever seen.
Customer Reviews:
John Logie Baird - The deluded Inventor.......2005-10-24
This is apparently a semi-autobiographical account of the `inventor' of television or a system of televising moving pictures by wireless that was mechanical and in the end scientifically discredited.
It is a bitty and somewhat incoherent account (finished off by his wife and son) from a man whose methodology was sincerely flawed and who never really recognised the fact. The text is generally meandering and full of irrelevant stories and lacks even basic accounts of the way his cumbersome system of recoding on cine film and then scanning the photographic images by a revolving mechanical disc was never really regarded as instantaneous TV .
In the end he was only the one of many around the world to develop a system to actually send moving pictures by radio - but not as we know it today!
A thousand things you didn't know about John Logie Baird.......2005-01-25
Autobiographies are usually full of pretension, self delusion and self importance, with a small measure of reality. Not this book. Read an autobiography by a man who writes his life story within a framework of harsh honesty. Enjoy his dry caustic wit and his amusingly frank assessment of others. Be enlightened to find that JLB was not the mad professor poring over weird and wonderful contraptions, but a sophisticated and cultured man who built a formidable business empire around the television systems he pioneered. Read about a man whose immortality is steadily gaining momentum.
Book Description
Birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it. People do it too—have babies, that is—but sometimes they need a little help getting there. Often the problem is simple and can be handled without medical intervention. Unfortunately, in many cases it’s more complicated and can lead to a long, costly, and emotionally trying treatment process. Each year, more than 6 million people become fertility patients in the United States, alone. And they’re just the ones who can afford treatments which can cost as much as $20,000—with no guarantee of success.
Ready for a baby but having a hard time conceiving? In this friendly guide, fertility patient, Jackie Meyers-Thompson and fertility expert Sharon Perkins use humor, heartache, and the real-life experiences of actual patients to cover the complete fertility story. In jargon-free language, they clue you in on the essentials of human reproduction and what can impede it. And they tell you what you need to know to:
- Take control of your fertility
- Optimize you chances of conceiving
- Know why you’re not conceiving
- Understand your treatment options
- Find the right doctor and work with him or her
- Navigate the confusing world of fertility treatments
From basic life-style changes to in vitro fertilization, Fertility For Dummies covers all the basic and high-tech fertility choices available. You’ll discover what you need to know about:
- The female anatomy, the logistics of getting pregnant, and behaviors you should or shouldn’t change before trying to conceive
- Fine-tuning conception efforts using methods to predict ovulation, best sexual behaviors, diet, vitamins and supplements, and more
- Tests for diagnosing fertility problems and understanding the effects of various diseases on fertility
- Choosing a specialist and choosing a treatment, including intrauterine insemination and fertility injections
- In vitro fertilization, what to expect physically, emotionally, and financially
- Third-party reproduction—working with sperm donors, egg donors, embryo adoption, and surrogates
Relax, discover your fertility options, and let Fertility For Dummies be your guide to having a baby.
Customer Reviews:
Thanks for my gorgeous baby........2005-10-31
The book covers fertility options in great depth and if it only suits dummies I am not sure what that says about the many experts out there who couldn't seem to solve my problem. It gave me questions and answers that the experts couldn't and after 8 years trying and many $ spent and with my biological clock about to expire - this gave me what I needed to ask the right questions, get the right tests and surgery done, and finally fall pregnant ! You've nothing to lose by reading it and checking if there is anything you might have missed elsewhere.
A Very Good IVF Resource.......2005-02-15
My Husband & I were getting ready to be thrown into the IVF arena. I had been looking for a resource book to help us through this daunting process but just couldn't find the right one. I went to the book store every weekend and kept picking up the same old ones trying to convince myself that "it would do" but the information just didn't seem to go into depth on the massive (expensive) subject I needed them too. Then came cycle day 1 and I called my doctor only to find out the IVF lab was closing in the next 2 months due to construction at the hospital where it is housed - we got thrown into IVF much quicker than anticipated. We went into the doctors office and got the specs on our individualized plan and the injection lessons but still came out feeling completely overwhelmed. I went back to the bookstore to pick up one of the other books I had been looking at just to calm down a little bit when I found this one. I have found it to be a very good resource if you are getting ready to go through IVF. I felt a lot more informed about the process which helped my anxiety to subside and believe me, going into this more worked up than you have to be is not a good idea :) The authors did a great job explaining the IVF process. The only areas I wish they had gone into more detail is on injectibles and labwork. They do touch on these subjects, I just wish they had gone into even more detail. But overall a very good resouce for IVF. Thank you ladies from a grateful (hopefully successful) IVF patient.
More of the same...........2004-04-12
If you have read any other books on infertility, don't bother with this one. It truly is for dummies, in that there is really no helpful new approach or information. It is more of a reproductive dictionary.
My new fertility dictionary!.......2003-06-16
This is my new fertility dictionary! I can look up all the technical stuff that I need to know while trying to conceive (ttc). It has given me a 'game plan' for what I need to do next. I have used this book to figure out the RIGHT questions before my doctor's visits and understand all that he said afterwards. I also really appreciate the personal stories. I have gotten down and out (even though I've only been trying to have a baby for six months) and worried about what it will take to get pregnant and hearing about other people the same as me has been kind of comforting. I have read some of the stories and suggestions about relationships to my husband as well. He and I have been at each other's throats during this process and at least it has given us some things to laugh about as well.
More so than any fertility book I have read so far, this book combines all the technical information with the emotional side as well.
A must have for anyone TTC.......2003-05-24
Having just hit the 2 year mark in trying to conceive this book is long overdue. One of the authors is an IVF nurse and the other is a 3 year infertility success story. They cover everything from starting out naturally through the whole IVF experience. They captured so many of my feelings and experiences, from being the human pin-cushion with endless dr appts to dealing with those difficult baby showers. It also has a great Cheat Sheat that covers common terms used on all the fertility message boards, the 5 most important tests, and normal blood test results during a cycle. It is filled with personal stories and I came away from it knowing once again that I'm not alone. I'm thinking about getting it for all of my friends and family members who have shared my experience so they can have a better idea of what it is all about. My last two years encapsulated in a Dummies book. Thank you Jackie and Sharon for taking the time to write such a comprehensive and important book.

sweet satisfaction.......2007-01-17
This cookbook is great and the recipies are really easy to follow. The Turtle Cake is awsome. I am looking forward to trying each recipie, specially the holiday cakes.
Great for no fuss baking.......2007-01-10
I received this book as a gift and absolutely love it. It makes baking simple and uncomplicated. Baking from scratch is good for some but most of us do not have that kind of time. This book allows for great tasting and great looking desserts such that no one would guess you took a shortcut.
Betty Crocker cake mix cookbook.......2006-09-20
This is an excellent book as the instructions are written in a clear concise format. Recipes include a variety of desserts--cakes, cookies, breads, and special occasion cakes for birthday, Christmas, and other holidays. Even the novice cook would benefit from this cookbook as I believe these are "never fail" recipes which is a good boost to the beginning baker! Tips are also given at the beginning of the book to make sure the baker has all the information he/she needs as well as a consumer Q & A section is given.
Cake Mix Doctor MUCH Better!.......2006-08-07
Many of these recipes are -follow the instructions on the box- and do something cute with the finished product: cut in pieces and make a bunny cake,a sailboat cake, a butterfly cake, a computer cake, etc., or add food coloring and make a rainbow cake. I was expecting more RECIPES.
Fun for Families.......2005-11-01
If you are relatively new to cake decorating, or want to make something a bit unusual for your family, this book would be a useful tool. It features cake recipes for use with boxed mixes, recipes for frostings and glazes, and recipes for cookies, pies, cheesecakes, and other desserts, as well as some decorating ideas.
I would rate the decorating ideas in the neighborhood of the Family Fun cake decorating book. They are not amazingly difficult or complicated, and they don't require a lot of special tools. Some of my favorites are the 3D sand castle cake, reindeer cupcakes, and ballet slippers carved from a sheet cake. There aren't any fondant designs; most use frosting and/or other edible accents. If you are used to looking at the Wilton yearbooks for decorating ideas, this book is some relief, because it shows you ways to carve and shape cakes without purchasing a bunch of specialized pans. One down side is that several of the cake designs described in the book do not include photographs. Another is that only two sections of the book are dedicated to decorated cakes--the others are more traditional, with mostly frosting or glaze coverings and possibly some fruit or nuts for garnish.
The recipes are great for their sheer variety. Sections include Bake and Take (my favorite here is the S'mores cake), Wonderfully Indulgent (I want to try the Peanut Butter Silk and French Silk Hazelnut cakes), Special Celebrations, Heavenly Holidays (the candy cane cake is a cute idea), Come for Brunch, Scrumptious Desserts (includes cheesecakes, tarts, and baked Alaska cake), Cookies and Bars, and Frostings and Glazes.
I think cake mixes can be a great foundation for delicious cakes, but some of the recipes I've tried from this book haven't been too exceptional. The chocolate turtle cake was only okay, and the cherry-chocolate chip cake wasn't as good as I'd hoped, either.
Still, this book has a lot to offer. The add-in ingredients aren't difficult to find, there are recipes for a variety of tastes (mandarin orange to grasshopper fudge to caramel carrot to lemonade cakes), and cakes appropriate for diverse occasions.
I liked the tips for each recipe that suggest variations, and the diagrams for assembling shaped cakes are clear and well-done. I admit I also liked the nostalgic bits--a brief history of Betty Crocker's 50 years, and inset photos of some advertisements over the years. The book also provides helpful general recommendations for successful baking.
I think Betty Crocker also publishes another book focused on decorating that provides more photos (and some identical photos) of the designs outlined in this book. I think I remember seeing a photo of the sailboat cake, for example, in that edition, but this book only includes sailboat cake directions and a diagram. Still, between the two, I would recommend this version, simply because the variety of the recipes and general baking tips are more useful than the designs, which are cute, but not anything you couldn't design yourself with a little experience and imagination.

Excellent Cake Book!.......2007-06-27
This book has tons of great recipes for a cake mix. I honestly didn't know you could do this much with one! I can't wait to begin trying them out. I highly recommend this book!
Made a Believer Outta Me!.......2005-05-08
In my circle of friends, I'm known as a Master Chef. I can whip up delightful lemon curds, Sky High Meringue Pies, and shortbread that floats off the plate. BUT....I had NEVER baked a cake, never wanted to BAKE a cake, and didn't even LIKE cake...thanks to the miserable examples that I grew up trying to swallow in the 1960's! Dry, chemical tasting; they were featureless and a sure sign, in my myoptic view, of "Lazy Cooks", especially where Box Cake Mixes were concerned.
Enter 2005: I am asked to cater a British Tea Party...and one of the projects was to bake and decorate a CAKE! I expected to 'job it out' (having a bakery make it) but decided to tackle the Beast Formerly Known as Cake, instead.
I signed up for Wilton Cake Decorating Class. The instructor, who runs a famous bakery in Michigan, SWORE by cake mixes and insisted that they "had improved since my childhood". With her 30+ years of experience, she recommended ONLY Betty Crocker Cake Mixes and also recommended THIS BOOK, as a way to personalize the taste of cakes.
Well, in for a penny, in for a pound of butter, I say. I started the classes, I ordered the Betty Crocker Ultimate Cake Mix Cookbook, and four weeks later, I've baked over 12 examples from the book, pulled off the British Tea to accolades, AND...learned that CAKE.IS.GOOD!
This book is incredible! It has a history of HOW cake mixes have changed throughout the years; it explains what the ingredients "do" in a recipe, and it offers ways to make crisps, cookies, bars and other goodies with a mix.
Out of my 500+ cookbooks, THIS cookbook has been the MOST used one in the past month! And I've brought it to class, where the other 5 students also ordered it!!!
When professional bakers, who are making their mortgage payments and sending their kids through school via cakes, tell me that they use mixes 80% of the time, it's time to listen! You'll LOVE this book!!!
My favorite cookbook.......2005-01-12
I love cookbooks and this one, a gift from my sister-in-law, is my favorite. These easy cakes are unique and delicious! Impress your friends and family and save time too. I cannot recommend it enough.
From now on....It's dessert every day!.......2003-11-14
I love baking cakes & making sweets. But being a mother of two little ones I don't have enough time (or energy) to make cakes from scratch. This book is a treat for me, because I don't need a lot of planning ahead nor to spend too much time in the kitchen!!
A few days ago I made the Peanut Butter Cake & it looked impressive and was delicious!! I felt like a million dollars presenting it.
The book is full of appetizing pictures for nearly all the recipes, easy to use & follow directions, and has lots of tips & ideas. It also tells you how many calories are in a slice (for all you gals who want to know, although my advise is to skip that particular line).
In the book you will find all kinds of recipes for cakes, trifles, cupcakes, cookies & more.
Indulge yourself & your family.
Fun and delicious!.......2003-03-15
Every recipe in this outstanding cookbook is easy to make and delicious to eat! This book is in colour with lots of pictures, so you can decide what to bake based on how the cake looks as well as how the recipe sounds.
From quick "bake-and-take" cakes for church potlucks, to elaborately designed masterpieces for parties and weddings, to brunch cakes, this book has it all! Why no try the decadent Tres Leches Cake, or the fun Chocolate-Chip Cookie Surprise Cake, or maybe you want a cake in the shape of a train. This book has it all!

This books is not for beginners.......2007-08-10
This book have really nice projects. I bought this book because it has a large range of projects, from baby boots to pillow cases to bags. There are lovely pictures of what the finally product should look like so that you can see if you are doing it right.
Great basics.......2006-03-09
This is a wonderful book. My girlfriend has it, and having looked through it, I am going to buy it for myself. It has some beautiful patterns for beginner crocheters. Basic patterns are usually pretty unappealing, but these are gorgeous. The instructions are easy to follow too.
Two minor criticisms. First, it would have been helpful to have the yarn specifications well set out so that yarn substitution would be easy. Secondly, a set of photos with the finished product fully laid out, rather than draped over things, would make it easier to determine what the finished product will look like.
Overall though it is a fantastic book and well worth checking out.
Book Description
Operation Iraqi Freedom marked a new era in television war coverage. On-the-spot reporting by journalists, photographers, and cameramen captured combat in ways that are nothing less than historic. Sharing the triumphs, tragedies, and daily routines of the soldiers, viewers crouched in the trenches, felt the vibrations of bomb explosions, tasted sands borne on fierce desert winds. We were there -- embedded among the troops, eyewitnesses to the horror of battle. Historic television. Historic journalism. NBC news captured it all and was the acknowledged leader among all the network and cable news organizations covering the Iraqi war. This book + DVD package written and produced by NBC News presents a chronological narrative of reporting from the field supplemented by interviews and anchored broadcasts from Qatar, Kuwait, and the United States. The book includes a Foreword by Tom Brokaw, an Introduction by an NBC military expert, and a special dedication to fallen colleague David Bloom. Thousands of hours of images and words have been molded into a concise, eloquent summary of the historic events of the conflict, further enhanced by the photographic and video record. The DVD contains approxiamately 2 hours of live coverage of the war broadcast by NBC News, MSNBC, and CNBC.
Customer Reviews:
The best picture book about the 2003 War with Iraq........2006-06-12
Of all the picture books about the 2003 War with Iraq, this is probably the best. It has a little more meat than the other books, and the book goes into detail from the GI's perspective. I have read a number of these books, and this is perhaps the best. All of these books have great pictures, but there is little writing of substance in each of them. This one has a little more traction and substance.
Several pages were devoted to David Bloom, the reporter who had a heart attack in Iraq. His live coverage was great, but the book paints him as a cut above the other reporters and NBC above the other news organizations. Other than this publicity, the book is well thought out and gives a detailed picture of the three operation to overthrow Saddam Hussein. This is a nice picture book and an above average read.
A comprehensive rundown of the invasion.......2005-08-30
I have several different documentary books and dvd's on the invasion of Iraq, a subject of interest for me given that I was there with the 3rd Infantry Division. This book by far provides the most bang for your buck, with hundreds of action-photos and maps covering nearly every aspect of the war. It is written from the point of view of the imbedded reporters, so usually only one unit of each type is featured (ie, 3-15IN but not 1-15IN or 2-69AR). The DVD especially focused on the lives of the imbedded reporters, but both the book and the DVD covered an immense amount of information and made it interesting. I particularly appreciated the way the DVD showed specific news broadcasts, portraying what it was like to be watching us on TV during the invasion; I also was glad to see that at the end of the book it is dedicated to the soldiers that lost their lives between March 21 and April 14, 2003, and a by-date list of those soldiers is given.
Above the fray.......2003-10-10
NBC has done an exceptional job documenting the imbeds' experience in Iraq. Not only was this war covered more comprehensively than any other, but the reporters' experiences add a depth of human emotion so often lacking in the dry stand up reports from a briefing room. But their story is just one part of a beautifully produced book and DVD. This book is filled with stunning pictures of "shock and awe" as well as the innocents caught in the middle. If you only get one book on the recent war iun Iraq, this is it!
Courageous and innovative journalism.......2003-10-03
This book has lots of behind-the-scene accounts from reporters who were actually there, as well as from the producers in the control room. There's also a forward by NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw and an introduction by retired Army general and current NBC military analyst Montgomery Meigs. The book comes with a full-length DVD produced by NBC News and presents highlights of their war coverage along with extra features such as postwar interviews and commentary. This hardcover book has lots of color pictures on its 144 pages and also comes with a DVD.
eloquent and objective visual summary.......2003-10-03
Operation Iraqi Freedom was a war like none other, and this book captures that feeling. Many people worldwide were against the war and will probably pass by this book as a result. That's unfortunate because but no matter what your personal politics are, this book is is a stunning chronology of the good and the bad of Operation Iraqi Freedom. For one thing, the photographs are absolutely stunning. They show both sides of this war and the innocent Iraqi people caught in between a murderous dictator and the world's only Superpower. The book also has a very personal touch. I really enjoyed the photos of NBC anchorman David Bloom. Several detailed graphical maps in the book detail the journeys of the NBC reporters in Iraq and talk about what they encountered everyday from sandstorms to terrorist attacks. If you are the type of person who sees things on TV and feels like it's just a movie, then hopefully the personal tales of these reporters will shake you loose. There's a few books on the market now that try to capture this conflict in paper form, but they just don't come close. Too many of these books let their politics get in the way (imagine right wing Fox News making a book about war) or they were rushed to market to cash-in on the war. Not this book. It's a very eloquent and objective visual summary of the events of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The book also comes with a DVD which is pretty cool. Lots of nice animated graphics and emotional reports from the front line. I highly recommend this book no matter what your feelings about the war were. This book is beautifully produced. The quality of the stories, photographs and objective reporting of events is outstanding.

A Jewish Feminist Reconciles With Her Faith.......2003-07-07
Letty Cotton Pogrebin was born in 1939 in Jamaica, Queens, New York. She was raised in an observant Jewish home, and studied Torah and Talmud. When she was fifteen, her beloved mother died of cancer, and Ms. Pogrebin, because she was female, could not be counted to form the necessary "minyan" to say the traditional mourner's Kaddish, (prayer), for her own mother. Her father, who never seemed, or apparently cared, to understand how marginal and rejected she felt, called the synagogue and had another man sent to their home, where they were sitting shiva. Time has brought change to the Jewish religion. Today a woman can form a minyon, the group of ten Jews necessary to recite formal prayers, in Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist Movements. But these changes did not happen in time for Letty. A few years later, while she was still in college, her issues with her father, and with the male dominated Jewish religion, became intertwined. Her feelings about her "father and her faith merged." She writes, "I also cut off my formal affiliation with Judaism. Merge the Jewish patriarch with patriarchal Judiasm, and when you leave one, you leave them both."
"Deborah, Golda, And Me," is Letty Cottin Pogrebin's story of her struggle to reconcile her feminism with her Jewish faith. She writes with intelligence, passion, honesty, and eloquence about her determination to fight against being a marginal person in her religion, and in her life. This book, in a sense is a record of many of the battles waged in her war for personal and political power.
She was active early on in the women's movement and was the founding editor of Ms. Magazine. When she reflects on the broad purview of feminism in the 1960s and 1970s, she cannot explain why she felt no curiosity about the status of Jewish women or the problems of Jewish girls in less hospitable environments then those in which she grew up. "I don't know why I wasn't motivated to investigate religious sexism, or to integrate some of my private spiritual insights into my general feminist framework. Even if I did not choose to act as a Jew in the Women's Movement, why didn't I at least act as a feminist among Jews? Why didn't I join forces with Jewish women who were fighting for gender equality in the synagogue, where I was aware of the gender inequities?"
She fought for equal rights for women, all over the world, and against anti-Semitism. In 1975, at the first of three United Nations "International Women's Decade" Conferences, the delegates passed a resolution that effectively identified all Jews as racists. The "Zionism is racism" resolution - called the Declaration of Mexico, (the conference was held in Mexico City), took Letty by surprise. "I could not believe that supposed feminists who had been entrusted with the inauguration of a ten-year commitment to improving the status of all the world's women - and who were pledged to address the monumental problems of female infanticide, illiteracy, high mortality rates, abject poverty, involuntary pregnancies, domestic violence, and so on - could allow their agenda to be hijacked on behalf of this unspeakable PLO slogan."
This is a deeply personal account, told with much love. I especially appreciate Letty's anecdotes of Jewish holiday celebrations with family, while her mother was still alive. Ms. Pogrebin also demonstrates her knowledge in Torah and discusses worthy Biblical women from the Tanakh. As she grew older, she, along with women friends, began to create Jewish rituals around life cycle events meaningful to women.
Letty Cottin Pogrebin continues to struggle for the rights of women in society. She was always a woman who I admired. Now that I have read "Deborah, Golda And Me," I am truly a fan!
great book, but some areas are a bit dated.......2001-04-17
I enjoyed much of this book--particularly the parts about her family and their effect on her and her Judaism. The parts about Palestinians go on a bit long, and they were hard to read in light of more recent developments. A lot has happened in the last 10 years, and I wonder what she would have to say about this topic now.
An eye opening book.......2000-02-08
This book was eye opening. As an Orthodox Jew and a feminist, there were many aspects of the this book I found hard to deal with. However, I have found that overall I was very impressed with the content of the book.
The author spends a lot of time reflecting on her own experience as a Jewish Woman in America, which was often very different from my own. However, when she got down to the nitty-gritty of being a Jewish woman, and the problems and issues therein, she hit the mark. I found myself reading excerpts in discussions with both male and female friends about the way women are treated in Judaism, especially in Orthodox circles.
As a mother, I found this book especially important as I raise my daughter to become a, G-d willing, enlightened Orthodox Feminist Jew.
One of the most important books in woman's studies........1998-02-19
This book, which was a bestseller, is certainly one of the most important books in both women's studies and Jewish studies. Written with love, with force, seamlessly incorporating meticulous research with the author's insightful wisdom, it is a book that will be read for many years to come. I bought 6 copies of this book for friends, and all agreed it was probably the best book of this ilk that they had read. Ms Progebin is an extraordinary writer, with a great heart, and the abilty to weave love into the most hardened or bitter of facts. To all women, and most especially to all Jewsish women, READ IT! You will be greatly helped.
