The horrific story of how American POW J. Mackowski escapes.......2000-01-04
In the foreword, John Wallace describes how he encountered a quiet former prisoner of W.W.II in his upstate New York town. Wallace befriends the man, John Mackowski, and soon takes an interest in bringing the amazing story Mackowski had to tell out into the world.
POW 83 is a powerful account of the Japanese atrocities committed against captured American forces whom had occupied the Philippines prior to Japanese conquest. Mackowski's story is compelling and moving, as the reader can only wonder how many times the survivors of these concentration camps had to evade death. Wallace tells the story just as it happened; with all the near experiences Mackowski encountered. However, what is best about this novel isn't in the text. Had the Allied forces not been successful in defeating Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan in the last World War, certainly so many stories like Mackowski's would never have been told. The Democratic freedom of speech would no longer exist had the Allied Forces failed in their efforts. So alas, what is so truly compelling about POW 83 is just that Mackowski's story is finally being told (like so many others). Mackowski's horrible ordeal represents the enormous sacrifice of an entire generation of young men and women, for the sake of Democracy.
In our modern age, it is almost impossible to read POW 83 and accept that such a travesty could occur. The sadness is that everything Wallace writes in POW 83 is fact.

"Outstanding and Compelling!.......1999-12-17
This is an important book told in authentic and entertaining fashion. This razor-sharp tale of American Prisoners of War in the Japanese Death Camps, their struggle, their pain, holding onto their honor while being savaged by guards should be mandatory reading for every American. John Wallace has remarkable talent and has produced an excellent book.! "

One mans journey through the worst part of WWII.......1999-12-09
"POW-83" is a very moving and informative non-fiction book. The author details the life story of a young man who grew up on the streets of Brooklyn and is drafted into the army nine months before Pearl Harbor. He fought on Bataan and Corregidor until he was captured in 1942. What happened to those brave American soldiers in the Japanese Death Camps will horrify you. The author also manages to put together the final moments of most of the 750 American POW's aboard the Japanese "hell Ship" the Shinyo Maru, on September 7, 1944. When only 83 men escaped. The events recorded in this book are part of history and should not be forgotten. The author's style was simple and to the point. There's no fluff or filler here. I recommend it highly.

A system that works, with some additional research.......2005-02-24
I found this book to be a mixture of practical, helpful information for laywomen to get acupuncture health benefits, and useless spiritual hokum. Clearly, the author has done some in depth personal research into her techniques, and I have benefited greatly from it. I only gave the book three stars, in part because there is a lot of nonsense in the book. There were several too many "miraculous" cure stories in the book for my taste, and far too much amorphous spirituality. Acupuncture works without all of that. Once you wade through that, the book is very helpful. However, the second reason that I only gave the book three stars, is the extremely poor quality of the graphics. If you have little experience with acupuncture, you MUST GET ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ACUPUNCTURE POINTS USED IN THIS BOOK. The drawings provided to help you locate the points are terrible, offering absolutely no landmarks to find the correct point. If you go by the graphics in this book alone, good luck finding the right point. I recommend reading this book, then visiting this website: http://yinyanghouse.discuss-acupuncture.com/acupoints/
which has wonderful, accurate graphics of the various points described in the book. With this additional information, you will be able to make this system work.
an important contribution .......2005-01-04
I found Jeanne's book by chance. I am interested in alternative type of treatments. I was researching some books and her book was mentioned. At first, what attracted me was the idea of: taking charge of your own healing process. After reading the book, I have found in its pages not only that kind of knowledge but also wisdom.
Nowadays, it is easier to find books on: energy healing, energy medicine, alternative therapies and related topics. It is difficult to find books that give you the opportunity to recognize that in a healing process one of the main actors must be "your Self". Jeanne helps you to recognize this by discussing not only her own healing process but also by providing stories that show how healing comes from within.
The ancient healing system discussed in Jeanne's book has been analyzed in other books as well under titles referring to Chinese therapies, energy medicine, acupressure and so on. However, if you want a good and simple introduction to this ancient healing system particularly applied to women health difficulties and illness, you will find that information in this book.
Those readers who have experience on these topics can also benefit from this book since it provides a different perspective on the use of the forbidden pregnancy Chinese acuppresure points. It also provides a method for working and using these points in a healing process. I am using that method to deal with allergies that I have suffered from childhood. From the beginning, I have experienced a relief in many allergy symptoms which suggest that by using those points I can more effectively deal with my allergies.
Finally, "Woman heal thyself" is a book that could help women in being aware of their own healing capabilities and knowledge. A knowledge that in the past was not uncommon and was practiced with dignity, compassion and love by those women who began searching for answers like Jeanne.
It works!!!!.......2003-10-28
I was skeptical at first having tried several "alternative" healing techniques. But at 37, after years of a period that you could set a clock by, my periods became totally irregular. Bleeding before, during (excessively), and after. The doctors wanted to put me on hormones. I had a very negative experience with these in the past. Anyway, I tried this and within three months my periods were just fine. Little cramping, average to light flow. I stopped doing them several times and the irregularity came back. So now my copy is falling apart because I take it with me always. Although I don't agree with her pressure points as a birth control method or with some of her philosophies, the pressure points work!
Look no further for answers to your women's health issues.......2001-08-30
This is the book if you're seeking solutions to problems with conditions, diseases and syndromes of the gynecological organs. Jeanne is compassionate and very good at explaining what goes on, where it came from and how to fix it. She is open and honest, using her personal experiences to teach us how to heal ourselves. All of this is done without drugs or surgery. My husband is a practitioner of Oriental medicine. Through him, I've had an opportunity to study accupressure and the energy meridians. Jeanne's book is by far the best I've ever come across at getting this important information out to the Western public. Read it and start your way on the path of health.
A fascinating book about recovering feminine power within........1997-08-24
After I read this book, I knew I had to have Jeanne appear as a guest on my TV talk show. I found the contents of the book fascinating; likened to finding a hidden treasure.
We as a society give so "much of ourselves" away that it truly felt good to read something that could give one such a sense of empowerment.
Thanks Jeanne for the research and insight. Pat Barnes

The long and short of it is you could pick up a copy of The Village Baker by Joe Ortiz, start at the beginning, bake your way to the last page, and open your own village bakery. A California regional baker since 1978 (Joe Ortiz bakes breads, and his wife bakes pastries at Gayle's Bakery in Capitola, California), Ortiz brings his years of personal experience and his endless travels through Europe to the one subject he holds so dear: good bread. And by good bread, he means the best of what France, Germany, and Italy have to offer, as well as notable contributions from great American bakers working in the traditional, village-baker style: dense, crusty, flavorful loaves of bread that support life in and of themselves. Ortiz holds out the promise that this can actually be accomplished in the home kitchen--with the highest standards.
Ortiz's book starts in the style of a primer with sections on the basic ingredients, kinds of leavenings, and basic techniques and procedures. He wants the newcomer to bake the very basic French loaf (think baguette) several times to get one decent loaf under the belt buckle. Then it's open season on regional breads, rye breads, and specialty breads. In a final section, Ortiz gives the true enthusiast professional style recipes and ideas. --Schuyler Ingle

Nearly 100 recipes, illustrated throughout.

Professional Boulangerie.......2004-12-15
I give this bread book the lowest possible rating, because it is worthless to the home baker, author comments not withstanding. If you are already a decent bread baker and wish to be a great one, this book is absolutely essential; for the rest of us, forget it. If you have worked in a boulangerie washing pans and weighing out flour and wish to become a journeyman bread baker, or a home baker who knows what a direct method bread is and can make one without a recipe, this book is a must have. It will show you techniques, methods, and philosophies that will make a great bread maker out of a mediocre one. In spite of the faulty instructions, I had no trouble with the breads I tried, and found the recipes to be reliable, even when baking something for the first time. If you already know your way around the bread kitchen and want to take the next step, this book is one of the few I know of that will get you there.
This book is a collection of the bread making techniques the author has learned over the years from small, artisanal boulangerie in France. The author has made the serious mistake of assuming that since these artisanal bakeries make small batches using no fancy or modern equipment, that the home bread baker can duplicate them; nothing could be farther from the truth. Most of the recipes in the book require experience and judgment to properly execute.
The main value of this book is as a repository of recipes and methods for high quality and flavorful breads as practiced by hard working bakers laboring away in small, neighborhood boulageries. It is a good antidote to the fluffy, flavorless mass-produced breads you will find in supermarkets both in this country and France. Many bakers have become famous using the recipes in this book, and only a small portion of the recipes have been commercially exploited; in this, there is much potential. Astonishingly, there is a collection of 4 dozen professional, ready to use commercial baking recipes; these are valuable recipes collected from some very famous and very successful boulangeries in France. In fact, most of the recipes in the first part of the book are scaled down versions of these professional bread recipes, which the author has adapted with varying success. Even here, however, the author has erred by not making the ingredient tables consistent; a few are in baker's percentage, but not all, the english and metric amounts are not always equivalent (something the author could easily have fixed by spending a few minutes with a calculator; as is, you have figure it yourself and scribble the correct numbers in the page margins).
One significant problem is that the author starts throwing around important terms, like levain, sourdough, starter, sponge, or poolish, without explaining the meaning of the various terms; indeed, in some cases the author uses these terms incorrectly. An experienced baker will be able to know the difference, but not the typical home cook trying to make bread. The author also commits the ultimate baking sin: measuring flour in cups and not weight, even worse not telling you how that flour is measure. A cup of flour can weigh anything from 3 to 5 ounces, depending on how you measure it. The difference is between great bread and an awful disaster. It also would have been nice to have a recipe listing in the table of contents or chapter headings, as there really are not that many recipes in the book.
It has chapters on ingredients, leavening, procedures, France, Italy, Germany, U.S., professional, and bread sculpture.
For the serious student.......2004-09-16
This book is good because of two reasons: It gives you a lot of authentic and traditional recipes and shows you how to use them. Joe Ortiz seems to be very forthcoming in that respect, that he teaches the techniques of the professional baker to a larger audience. He will teach you how to make bread without commercial yeast, but rather using home-made starters that will use "wild yeast" fromt he air. A bread like that can take about a week to make. The author is also very clear about the fact, that only experience can make you proficient home baker and that you will need well developed senses to decide when the dough can be taken to the next stage of its development. This means, you sometimes have to change a recipe slightly. Sometimes he will use recipes with a reduced amount of water to make the dough easier to handle, but in such cases a remark is added to the recipe (professional bakers seem to be used to handling very wet doughs with ease).
Reading this book really is like getting a glimpse into the inner workings of a professional bakery. There is a chapter about professional recipes that will yield dough quantities in the 80 lb range. First, I totally disregarded that chapter because I thought it's not of interest to the home baker, but then I discovered that it included a lot of good remarks about baking in general, that will improve your skills as a home baker too.
A book you can really sink your teeth into with a wealth of amount of material to study.
My new favorite introduction to artisinal bread baking.......2004-06-28
This book was written by Joe Ortiz of Gayle's Bakery in Capitola, California and published eleven years ago. At the time, the `Library Journal' said that good books for the home baker are few and far between. In 1993, Ortiz' book was just on the crest of renewed interest in artisinal breads. At the time, the most noteworthy books on artisinal bread baking were Carol Field's `The Italian Baker' and Bernard Clayton's `The Breads of France'. Peter Reinhart had written the small, quirky `Brother Juniper's Bread Book' which was long on one big idea, but not very detailed about some other aspects of baking. Bernard Clayton's giant `The Complete Book of Breads' did not even cover two of the three main types of yeast rising bread methods. It was more concerned with giving good, easy home recipes for a wide variety of different breads based entirely on `La methode directe' or the direct method. Therefore, Ortiz' excellent bibliography contains mostly works written in French.
In the last eleven years, a number of excellent books on artisinal bread have been written and published, especially by Peter Reinhart, Nancy Silverton, and Rose Levy Beranbaum. I have not read or reviewed Reinhart's award winning `The Bread Baker's Apprentice', so my favorite artisinal bread text before today was Beranbaum's `The Bread Bible'. Ortiz' book has just taken it's place. Beranbaum's book is almost twice as long and has a long introduction on ingredients and general techniques, but her presentation of the differences between the three major methods for yeast bread making simply do not succeed in making the subject quite as clear, as interesting, and as convincing as Ortiz' book. Beranbaum's book is still a great work with recipes for lots of types of breads that Ortiz does not cover. Before becoming too enmeshed with praise for Ortiz book, I must say I have taken a quick look at `The Bread Baker's Apprentice' and it appears to be the equal to `The Village Baker' on many points and may offer illumination on subjects Ortiz does not cover completely.
The heart of Ortiz book is simple artisinal bread made with flour, water, salt, and yeast. In some Tuscan bread, even salt is left out leaving three ingredients. In many breads, the yeast is captured from the ambient microflora, leaving but two ingredients added by the baker.
The thing that Ortiz makes so clear is the distinction between the three main methods for using yeast to leaven bread. The oldest method responsible for true sourdough breads, and the method most clearly characterizing `artisinal' baking is what the French call the `levain' method. With regional variations, this is THE method for rising dough until the production of brewer's yeast in 1810, a conversion which became complete with the production of baker's yeast in 1900. The `levain' method required at least 24 hours, as long as you had a viable starter. To create a starter required another four to seven days.
The direct method of leavening with commercial baker's yeast reduced production time from 24 hours to seven (7) or eight (8) hours. The problem is, breads made with the direct method simply did not taste as good or keep as long as levain breads, which benefited from the creation of acids as a byproduct of the natural fermentation. Hence, we get sour doughs from natural yeast fermentation.
The solution to improve the taste of breads without relying on the long and somewhat unreliable levain method was the invention of the sponge method or `Pain sur poolish', possibly named by the fact that it was invented by Polish bakers in Paris. This method creates a sponge from baker's yeast and flour on one day that rises overnight, when it is combined with more flour to form the dough. The overnight rising creates some of the acidic fermentation byproducts to give some of the sourdough tang. The brioche family, including challah is made using the sponge method. Italian bakers use a similar method, calling their version of a sponge a `biga' which is best for high gluten breads with a high water content for ciabatta and like breads.
Giving us an understanding of these three major approaches to yeast leavened bread may, itself, be worth the price of admission for this $20 paperback, but there is much more. True to the title of the book, the author' main focus is to give us an understanding of the traditional local professional baker, and to enable us to reproduce what this baker can do. To tell the full story, Ortiz gives recipes for many traditional breads as they may be done at home AND as they are done in the professional bakery. The professional recipes follow the same format used by other books for the professional baker such as Gisslen's `Professional Baking' and the recent Culinary Institute of America's `Baking and Pastry'.
In spite of the heavy use of French sources, Ortiz gives full coverage of Italian, German / Austrian, Italian, and American artisinal methods. That's right, American artisinal baking, headlined by the justly famous San Francisco sourdough. The only thing I miss is a reference to any special microflora native to the San Francisco area that makes this bread so distinctive. My hunch is that it is all due to the mist off the bay. In the section on American breads, Ortiz cites a large number of artisinal bakers, almost all of which are on the Pacific coast (that mist again) or in New York City. As the list is eleven (11) years old, I would verify any locations before getting into the car. Thankfully, I know that Zabar's in Manhattan is alive and well and still credited with having the best bread in New York City.
If you are interested in understanding serious bread baking basics, this is the book for you. Be warned, this is not simple quick stuff, but worth the read even if you never open a pack of Fleishman's yeast.
wow!.......2004-04-12
this book is by far the best baking bopk that i have(I have quite a few) it is one of the best values for your money and covers just about everything you need to know

The many devoted fans of Laurel Burch's art are drawn to her whimsical creatures rendered in richly saturated colors. In Laurel Burch Quilts: Kindred Creatures, the artist's followers will find 12 projects based on her endearing, instantly recognizable designs. Most of the projects are wall hangings (though there's also a picture frame and a bed cover) and most rely on fused and machine-stitched appliqué, along with occasional fabric painting. Complete, enlargeable patterns are given for each design; however, directions are quite sketchy and beginners are told to consult introductory guides. But Burch devotees who just can't get enough should enjoy these designs, which of course can be adapted to various media other than fabric. --Amy Handy

Laurel Burch Style.......2004-06-08
This inspiring book has excellent, clear patterns and directions that allow quilters to recreate the beautiful designs exactly. It also has suggestions that allow -- and indeed encourage -- you to use your own ideas. The instructions use a lot of fusing, painting, machine quilting, and even no-sew project ideas, so that you can get good results with speed. There are also ideas for beading and other extra embellishments. In short, the book offers maximum flexibility.
Projects focus on Laurel Burch's dynamic animal designs, with horses, cats, dogs, butterflies, birds, and bold flowers. There are wallhangings, bed quilts, and more, and the designs can be easily mixed and matched.
The general instructions are good and clear with attractive photographs. I think some previous quilting experience would help make these projects successful, but non-quilters might enjoy them too.
Laurel Burch fans will enjoy the book, even if they never make any of the projects.
Bold and colorful quilts.......2002-12-02
Like Mary Engelbreit, Laurel Burch has a distinctive and immediately recognizable artistic style. I got familiar with her work when picking out whimsical ceramic cat earrings for my wife's birthdays or other occasions, and always felt cheered by the bright color and fanciful forms of her artistic universe. As with anything this assertive and unique, you can tire of it, but somehow you can always come back to Laurel Burch and recapture the magic you felt when you first encountered her. It's a delight, then, to see her expand her artistic media into fabric with this book, Kindred Creatures. Mythical, magical horses, dogs, cats, birds, and butterflies gather in myriad combinations to form these breathtaking designs. As you might expect, Laurel doesn't limit her effects to fabric alone. These quilts are appliquéd and embellished with paint, fabric stamps, wire, and any other material that comes to hand. Despite the very clear and detailed instructions, there is lots of room for individual expression as you work on these quilts. This isn't a book of pastels or tea-dyes but a bright, bold excursion into a fantastic dream world.
Color galore.......2002-11-11
Okay, it is another quilt book that I feel can easily cross into wearable art. I actually made a black denim jacket and on the back made the horses with the rainbow manes is book. I enlarged the original picture 200% and appliquéd it on the back of my jacket. I have been in love with Laurel's work for years... could it possibly be the 70's that I got my first Laurel Burch earrings? Well now I created one of her creatures into wearable art. Just a tip, I allowed the black denim of the jacket be my background and simply appliquéd the horse faces and manes right on the jacket. Try it with your favorite kindred creature. I think the cats are next!
Laurel Burch Quilts: Kindred Creatures.......2002-10-01
This book has splendid colour illustrations that support the ideas in the text. I appreciate the author's attention to detail, in how to accomplish the complex and the simple tasks of design assembly of the quilts and wall hangings, plus her personal touch in making the projects attainable! She is a pro at her designs and in how she put this book together.
I'm equally eager to read and use her other book on cat quilts because I know it will be another exquisite contribution to the art of beautiful quilts, wall hangings and reading. Thank you Laurel Burch! I can hardly wait to get started on the projects she suggests in this book. BRAVO!

Closely related to aloes and haworthias, gasterias are shade-loving, drought-tolerant succulents endemic to southern Africa. They adapt well to indoor conditions and have therefore become popular house plants.

A modern revision of the genus; a major taxonomic work........1997-10-17
This is a beautiful book, almost a coffee table type, yet it is also a scholarly work which involved enormous amounts of botanical field work. It's one deficiency in my opinion is a lack of adequate illustrative photographs. The color plates are impressive and of art quality but do not show the amount of variation within the genus nor what some species really look like. Otherwise a commendable effort.
The first modern study of these South African succulents........1997-10-17
Mr. van Jaarsveld has done all succulent lovers a great service by doing the botanical study and work necessary to present this modern taxonomic understanding of Gasterias.

A wonderful gift book..........2004-12-24
We want to share some feedback from several who have purchased this book. Many brand new moms are buying our book and then giving it to their spouses as a way of "announcing" to them that they are expecting. We have heard from several new dads who were surprised...but excited...to learn that they were gonna be dads from receiving our book!
Warning: Christian Content.......2004-03-30
This book is very good at helping men understand a lot of the things that go with pregnancy and childbirth, in an easy to understand methode (alphabetical order). However, I was not expecting this book to be focused on Christian religious beliefs. For a family who is not Christian, this was a little annoying, as we did not relate to the many stories from men in the church community. Basically at the beginning of each letter, there is a short story from a minister, or religious teacher about his experience with his own wife and childbirth etc. While the stories were very touching, they were filled with Christian language and references to the bible. If on the other hand you are a devout Christian, this is the book for you.
A Supportive Guide for Soon-to-Be Dads.......2002-04-12
Who do women turn to for information when they're pregnant? Many times they know other women who have either been through a pregnancy, or who are pregnant at the same time as they are. Who do the soon-to-be husbands turn to? Other men or women? I tend to think not. Let's face it...it's easier for women to discuss their pregnancies than it is for their husbands. Actually, it's easier for women to discuss lots of things :-). So if men don't turn to anyone else, where can they turn to to find the answers to their many questions about their wife's pregnancy? One good source is the book, "Congratulations, You're Gonna Be a Dad," by Paul & Pam Pettit.
As a mother, I was able to relate to many of the situations in the book. Men, on the other hand, will certainly gain a lot of knowledge, and read what it's like to be a dad from the many stories written by fathers. Soon-to-be dads will learn what it means when someone tells their wife that they are "glowing;" what a "growth spurt" is; and many more useful facts about pregnancy and fatherhood. And women...men will also get some tips on how to prevent and treat diaper rash -- now there's no excuse! I think soon-to-be fathers will gain a little more respect for women, pregnancy, and the whole process of reproduction after they've read this book :-).
My ParenTime recommends "Congratulations Youre Gonna Be a Dad" - It's informative, enlightening, a joy to read, and will help men prepare a little more mentally, for an event that will soon change the rest of their lives.

Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744-1812), patriarch of the Rothschild clan, fathered five illustrious sons who made the family name a by-word for banking, fabulous wealth, and Jewish philanthropy. Israeli historian Elon has pieced together the story of the dynasty's founding father, largely unrecorded heretofore. Mayer Amschel spent his life traveling between the humble Jewish ghetto of Frankfurt and the mansions of the prosperous Gentiles whom he served, particularly that of Prince Wilhelm of Hesse. Jews were severely restricted in most areas of their lives, and Rothschild had to conduct himself with appropriate servility in the presence of his masters. However, the displacements of the Napoleonic Wars gave the discreet Rothschild his chance to act as Wilhelm's agent, and his monopoly on the disbursement of the prince's loans was his entry into banking. It was all the start he needed.
Customer Reviews:
Illuminating the Myth of Rothschild.......2003-10-03
Captivating either in spite of or because of it's extremely short length.
Most important thing to note about this book, other then the observation that it is a very good book, is that author really does "paint" a portrait that includes both the Man AND his time.
I felt the attention to the society of Rothschild really paid off at the end of the book. Rothschild is important not merely because he generated a truly epic amount of wealth for his family, but because he serves as a symbol of the manner in which capitalism changed the lives of those who practiced it.
Certainly, the Rothschild clan has been the focus of much anti-semitism and conspiracy theory. As a Jew, I always felt such talk was ridiculous, but I was interested to find the so-called "grain of truth" which, coupled with a long standing, virulent history of anti-semitism served to transform the Rothschilds into a focus for so much bile.
For example, the Rothschild's lent signifigant amounts of capital to the family which held the postal monopoly for the Holy Roman Empire ("Thurn and Taxis" Post). This relationship enabled the Rothschild's to take advantage of the "intelligence gathering" capabilities of the Postal system to their benefit.
This was a theme at the heart of Thomas Pynchon's excellent novel "The Crying of Lot 49". Which I recommend to those who enjoyed in this book.
Like Niall Ferguson's two part saga of the family history, this book was written in cooperation with the Rothschild family.
I recommend this book both for the portrait of the man as well as the portrait of the place and time.
Model biography........2002-09-03
Model biography about the life of the founder of the Rotschild dynasty.
Out of the Jewish ghetto in Frankfurt Meyer Rotschild became Court_factor (business manager) of the richest man in the world in late 18th/early 19th century: the landgrave of Hessen.
The starting point of his fortune were gold coin transactions with the landgrave.
After establishing his financial house in Frankfurt, he sent his sons to France and England, where his son Nathan made a fortune during the continental blockade decreed by Napoleon; he succeeded in continuing to trade illegally in English goods with a margin of 50 per cent.
Excellent picture of the Jewish ghetto in Frankfurt and of the social position of the Jews at the beginning of the 19th century. This book throws also a bleak light on the social condition of the poor, where soldiers were ruthlessly pressed into service and afterwards sold (a common business practice!) and where children were summarily hanged for stealing a loaf of bread.
A model biography: all mentioned facts are based on legal and other documents.
This book gives short shrift to all myths surrounding the origin of the Rotschild fortune.
Interesting history lesson about dynasty's founding father.......2002-04-22
Heard the taped version of FOUNDER: A PORTRAIT OF THE
FIRST ROTHSCHILD AND HIS TIME by Amos Elon . . . Meyer
Amschel Rotschild (1744-1812), the patriarch of the clan,
fathered five illustrious sons who made the family name a
byword for banking, fabulous wealth and Jewish philanthropy . . .yet prior to this book, I had known nothing about the dynasty's founding father . . . Jews had been severely restricted in most areas of their lives in the ghetto of Frankfurt . . .how one man was able to get beyond that impediment and succeed made for an interesting history lesson . . . I also enjoyed getting a sense
of how it was to live in the eighteenth-century.
Enlightening and vividly dimensional portrait!.......1998-01-18
Mr. Elon writes a rich, enlightening, and engrossing portrait of a pivotal figure in European history. The context of 17th-18th
century Frankfurt and Europe adds dimension that has to be read. A wonderful read and a wonderful gift.
Bravo!
