Been teaching this book for 3 terms now: one of the few important "war books" both men & women can participate in, respond to. As one student (Karl-Erik Karlsson) responded: "Gajdusek has written a very good book - no, it is a splendid book... it casts you between hope and despair...he uses the contrast between official military records... and the actual happenings...always searching for the right expressions.... a man so in contact with his imperfect language, it feels perfect...he plays with words, turns them around and studies them carefully...I REALLY enjoyed this book. I dare not call it a novel or anything else genre specific, because it is a transcendental text, crossing the borderlines of genre."

This is an excellent book on addiction. It is written for the lay person to understand. It goes beyond the physical aspect of addiction and explains the pychological aspect.

A closer look at the Dr........2007-01-14

I've been listening to Dr. Drew on Loveline off and on for about 10 years now. At first I was skeptical about his book, afraid that it would be a rehash of everything he says on the air. While he certainly discusses many of the same topics as the show deals with, he goes into greater depth and reveals a lot more about himself than he does during the show. Although Dr. Pinsky won't be winning any Nobel Prizes for literature, he has written a very accessible book, which will help the book reach a wider audience than it would if it had been written in a more elevated or hoity-toity style. It is certainly obvious than he is a very well-educated, knowledgable doctor, but he never rubs it in the reader's face. He is open, honest, and down to earth in this book, which will hopefully create awareness and help some people.

Having been with someone with several addictions - I got into reading self help books - this one I rate VERY highly - it explains well the trouble in recovery from addiction - covers drugs, alcohol and other addictions. Drew Pinsky is brilliant making it into a story of his life in treating patients with various problems.

Can't recommend it highly enough if you really can't see how addiction can take over your life - and keep returning.

Excellent, Modern horse breed book!.......2000-11-01

The Book of Horses is an excellent resource of horse breeds. The author includes many photos of modern representations of the breed. The text is brief but informative and interesting. Also included, are interesting facts relating to each breed. This feature is great. I especially enjoyed this feature relating to the many rare breed included in this book. I would recommend this book to horse lovers and people researching various horse breeds. Very nicely done!

This book has a valuable introduction tracing the development of Jewish participation in sport in the modern era. It also contains 'portraits' of individual Jewish athletes of distinction. It is a valuable resource .
However when one wishes to inspire the younger generation it is helpful to tell stories of the struggles individuals made to make their way . But perhaps for that , another volume is necessary.

The International Jewish Hall of Fame has plenty of reasons to be proud - and most are listed in this book. Not meant to be a complete biography, it gives sample snapshots of these legendary athletes, coaches and sportswriters. Obviously there is a rich and deep heritage in the Jewish community and this books fosters that well.

One or two paragraphs each containing stats and awards. I was expecting more fleshed out biographies, perhaps outlining any adversities these folks had to endure, Jewish or otherwise. No or almost no personal information.
