A MUST-HAVE BOOK FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN THE TEXAS NAVY.......2002-05-16

Ernest Fischer did an excellent job of blending information about the personal and political life of a largely overlooked Texas patriot. Fischer has managed to keep the book both intersting and factual from the standpoints of Potter's womanizing personal life and his firebrand political life in early Texas, using primary references. Like the other founders of the Republic of Texas, Potter's life had rough spots that many would see as flaws. After being kicked out of the U.S. House of Representatives for castrating two men suspected of dallying with his wife, and displaying other personal character flaws Potter went to Texas for a new start in life. Fischer details how much Potter contributed to the formation of the government of the new Republic and the organization of its Navy.

Fischer has provided the researcher in Texas Navy history with many little known but important facts not likely to be found in other published books. It is also very readable by both researcher and lay reader, written in an elegantly simple yet factual style.

I would rate this book with four and a half stars if it were possible. This book is a must-have for anyone researching the Texas Navy, or just looking for an interesting read on what life and politics were like in early Texas.

Accessible, clear, effective, and useful power tools.......2006-09-14

I came across this book because of my growing interest in chakra balancing and energy-based therapies. A friend had recently taught me some simple mudras, and I'd experienced a significant positive change in 3 weeks' time from using them. I was interested in learning more, especially with a focus on healing.

Most appreciated: accessible, simple and visually straightforward layout. Clear pictures on oversize pages make each mudra visually accessible for the end-user. If your eyes are over 40, and your muscles less than limber, you can easily access this information.

I never have to change glasses, lean over to see what's on the page, squint, or otherwise leave my comfort zone to access an exercise. The author and publishers bring the information to the reader, rather than requiring the reader to come to the information. The book is accessible, easy to understand, and the exercises in it effective and powerful.

Following a high velocity car wreck caused by a drunk driver, I was injured and have experienced many years of disability and limited mobility. Sitting on a couch cushion on the floor, I'm able to use these mudras without difficulty. Using chakra balancing and healing mudras for as little as five minutes twice a day has had remarkable results.

A few months ago I would have called myself a couch potato; today I am more like a lotus. People who see me every other week comment on improvements in my flexibility, skin color, overall energies and peace of mind. Imagine having 5 people in a row look at you and say "Wow!"

That's what I've been experiencing. Doing this kind of thing does not require vast amounts of time; if daily practice is impractical or impossible, do it as often as you can-2 or 3 days a week, twice a day. Do it as often as you can remember. It can make a powerful difference. No matter how disabled, hopeless, tired, overweight, limited in range, or out of shape you feel, you can begin to heal.

Mudras and chakra work as described in this book are a gentle but very powerful path for healing. I'd recommend this book to anyone who seeks a positive change in their energies.

Fun, Practical, and Non-denominational.......2006-03-29

This is a great book on Mudras.
The pictures are fun...Mesko is shown sitting and applying each mudra while dressed with spark. She also provides the chakra(s) and color(s) for each mudra for visualization. It's practical and easy to follow, i.e. Mudras for recharging, concentration.... The Mantras provided don't contain multi-deity stuff, it basically refers to the Creator...I personally like this. To sum it up, it's a welcoming, organized and clear book on Mudras.

Disappointed.......2005-10-21

The presentation lacked validity and detail. I was disappointed as a teacher of yoga not to find sanskrit names and several basic mudras included. The book was too "sensational". I sent it back.

Simple hand gestures for coping with stress and more.......2005-02-15

In Healing Mudras: Yoga for Your Hands, author Sabrina Mesko describes how the use of simple hand gestures, or mudras, can help you cope with many of life's challenges, from preventing stress to healing a broken heart to calming your mind. The book is divided into sections on Soul, Body, and Mind, with each section offering at least 15 individual mudras. "Soul" includes meditation-focused mudras such as Happiness, Love, and Trust, whereas the "Body" section focuses more on specific ailments (eg, Protecting Your Health, Preventing Burnout, Eliminating Fatigue, etc.). Finally, the "Mind" mudras address mostly emotional well-being, including Releasing Guilt, Overcoming Anxiety, Diminishing Worries, and Removing Depression. Each individual mudra is given a 2-page layout which includes an overview of benefits, meditation points for the mudra (ie, chakras, colors, and mantras), and a large photo captioned with clear, concise directions for performing the mudra.

Mesko recommends practicing mudra for just 3 minutes a day to start, eventually building up to a 31 minunte daily practice. Although I haven't engaged in a regular mudra practice as she suggests, I have found that taking a few minutes to perform these simple hand movements does leave me feeling more calm and centered. If you are looking for a simple, easy method to add a bit of self-care and inner focus to your daily life, this book is an excellent place to start.

Second Round is full of wonderful recipes that you will want to prepare again and again. Some of the recipes are for "southern dishes" but most are enjoyed across the nation. If you are a golfer it is fun to read the recipes submitted by PGA members or their wives. This is a follow up to Tea Time at the Masters which I think is even better. My books are worn from use which is not true of most of my cookbooks!

Brilliantly Creative, Clear and Concise.......2006-07-10

I have tried stained glass with several different instructors, but without a lot of success. The instructors had their own technique and were busy with a lot of students. This terrific book shows you the way and not only with words but with the pictures and all the steps needed. Obviously the authors are experienced teachers, creative and educated in their art.

I highly recommend this book to anyone from beginners to advanced. You will want to keep it for learning and reference. The book gives education on everything you would need to know about stained glass. Wish my previous instructors had read this book. Enjoy!

Interesting and Fun!.......2006-02-04

If you want to venture outside the realm of traditional stained glass creations, this book is for you! There are several projects in this book that take minor steps away from the traditional techniques and far more that go beyond. It was fun from start to finish...a must have for any stained glass library!

Great Intermediate Ideas.......2005-09-21

This was full of interesting, out-of-the-ordinary, ideas.
There are far better books out there if you are a rank beginner, but if you have started to master some of the beginning techniques and are looking to expand your "repertoire" this is the book. It has some really creative ideas for projects that are beyond the basics but don't require expertise either.
The directions are detailed and easy to follow with plenty of full-color photos.

Chock full of useful techniques.......2005-11-03

After I began taking a stained glass class, I ran to the library and the bookstore. My instructor is good, but he's only one opinion. I must have looked at a dozen books, but this is one of the two that I brought home. I'm certainly glad I did.

Like many such books, there are three sections: basic techiques, projects, and a gallery that shows what you can do (but offers no instruction -- just an ooh-ahh opportunity).

The techniques section is among the best I've encountered. In a sense, the info that beginners need is all about the same: the supplies you need, the types of glass available, etc. However, Creative Stained Glass always seems to have just a little more info that do the other books... maybe it's just four paragraphs about the kinds of solder instead of two, but at this point you need all the info you can get.

That first section is 40 pages, which is more than most books devote to the basics. The writing is friendly, too.

In addition, the projects are pretty! I've seen far too many stained glass books in which half the projects are, well, lame. The glass equivalent of a crying clown painted on velvet. The projects are more likely to be leaded rather than to use copper foil; most beginner books seem to choose copper. Each project has about three pages of instruction, plus the patter; my one quibble is that it often doesn't tell you by how much to enlarge the pattern.

I'm not positive I could have learned stained glass wholly from this or any book (this is one area in which a hands-on class makes all the difference), but this one would have given me the most confidence.

Overall, I've gotten the best advice from this book. I'm glad it's in my library. You should probably grab a copy, too.

My mother has a family history of osteoprosis. Severe, fatal osteoprosis. We were recommended this book by the physical therapist after her second bout with vetrebral fractures. It is understandable by lay people and includes very useful and simple changes to make in your life to combat the threat of osteoprosis. It includes testing and interpreting of tests, diet ,life habits, medecations, and useful exercises.

poor edition of an interesting book.......2005-03-07

This is a very interesting book, but I can hardly recommend this edition. For some reason they did not include any of the illustrations of the original book. The lack of illustrations is very obvious, since the text refers to various illustrations, which are simply not included. In addition, the publishers did a very poor job of proofreading the text, leaving in numerous obvious errors, both of punctuation and misspelling. Also, NO additional information is provided for modern readers, in the way of notes, definitions of words that are no longer currently in use, etc. In short, this is a very poor edition of this book.

Raised a Catholic by secular Jewish parents, she did not even know she was a Jew until the German occupation of her country in 1939 when she was twelve.

Whereas Anne Frank's diary ends with deportation to a concentration camp, Fortress of My Youth is the story of another young girl who tells us how she and her family were taken to Terezín, what food she ate there, what work she did, how her friends died from disease, how thousands were sent from there to Auschwitz, how her family members were killed, and how she escaped the gas chamber. But she also tells of love, joy, and sacrifice: musicians, writers, and intellectuals among the inmates who were determined to pass on their cultural heritage to the youth in Terezín; a network of Czechs outside the walls who smuggled in food; her singing in performances of Smetana and Verdi, the most profound experiences of her life.
