Book Description

Alicia and Jack Boyd began their married life as all other young couples do, full of love for each other and hope for the future. Jack was excited when his orders finally came through for training as a helicopter pilot. Becoming a pilot was his life-long dream. Jack was overjoyed, in spite of the possibility of serving a one-year tour in Vietnam.

To Alicia's sadness and confusion, the Jack Boyd that returned from serving his country in Vietnam was not the same eager young soldier that she'd married. Something happened to Jack in that remote Asian war that would forever mar the family.

The Vietnam War has raged on for years, leaving real destruction strewn in its path. During that time, it robbed Jack Boyd's siblings of a brother. It took a son from his father and mother. For years his children lost a dad, the grandchildren lost a grandpa, and Alicia Boyd lost her husband, who was her love and her best friend.

The family fought this war for more than thirty years, scarred in the long struggle by many landmines along the way; and although each member of the family has been wounded in battle, they received no medals, no recognition, no awards, and no rewards. They waited that heart-wrenching year for his return from overseas; and wait still. During all these years, they found themselves walking in the Shadow of a Vietnam Veteran. For now they remain imprisoned in those shadows, becoming the Silent Victims of that war.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An amazing but heartwrenching book.......2004-01-29

Shadows of a Vietnam Veteran: Silent Victims by Alicia J. Boyd is an amazing yet heart-wrenching book. It chronicles the life of a family and their trials and tribulations of dealing with the after effects of the Vietnam War. The author began up front saying she didn't use her real name or one of her children's but that everything else in the book was "true as I remember."

Having been previously married and with three children the author was surprised later on when she met her "true love" soldier. Once married they had three more children and the family blended well together.

The book begins with her new husband departing for Vietnam but then back tracks showing how Jack and Alicia met. Their first couple of duty stations together including a tour overseas. Then it was Jack's training for helicopters to get his wings and warrant officer bars. Shortly thereafter he received his orders "to report to the 1st Air Cavalry in Vietnam" in May 1966.

"The year seemed like an eternity." The family waited daily for his letters. When they arrived they were light and airy not delving into what was really happening. Likewise Alicia didn't report everything happening at home to Jack either. The family watched the news every night and worried about his safety knowing his unit was flying in very dangerous conditions.

When Jack arrived back in The World was when their problems began. The man they knew before his tour of duty in Vietnam was not the same man who returned to them. "Alcohol became his protector from the awful memories." At that time according to the author she "was aware of no counseling nor classes that the army offered to these returning soldiers or their families." Although he was now assigned as an instructor pilot he drank more and more. He finally turned to civilian life instead of chancing having to return to Vietnam.

Thus Alicia, Jack and their family began their journey of moving from place to place. They both held various jobs in different places. While there were good times, there seemed to be more bad ones. There were times when they "had no money, no jobs and no work prospects." Jack would go in and out of treatment programs. The children were affected, as was the marriage.

When really important things happened such as when one of their daughters was burned Jack was able to control himself and deal with the situations at hand. He finally got involved with the Post Traumatic Stress Clinic and that seemed to help-when he attended their sessions.

Throughout the book I kept waiting to read where Alicia and/or the children sought help for their own anguish. Unless I missed it, none of them ever went to an AL-ANON meeting. And while they weren't providing Jack with his alcohol they also didn't seem to be doing anything to make him stop other than take him to the VA Hospital occasionally.

This is a book that must be read. I know that many Veterans and their families have gone through similar events. AND sadly most everyone is too proud or afraid to ask for help. This family needed it. Had they gotten it right away perhaps their relationships wouldn't have fallen apart the way they did. I kept wishing that the author used her real name just because I know folks that might be able to help her and her family even now-years after the Vietnam War ended.

2 out of 5 stars A story of alcoholism.......2002-01-13

I read this book with great interest as my husband is also a Vietnam vet with PTSD. While Alicia Boyd's husband is certainly a victim of PTSD, he is primarily an alcoholic. I was saddened as I read the account of their life together and her husband's descent into the depths of alcoholism. I found little hope in this book and finished feeling that she needs to go to more alanon meetings and stop enabling his destructive behavior. I hope he finds recovery from the devastating disease of alcoholism.

5 out of 5 stars Shadows of a Vietnam Veteran: The Silent Victims.......2001-04-10

This book is spellbounding. Very hard to put down. This family has endured and stayed together thru some extreme hard times. It is amazing to learn that this is how we treat our veterans. We all take our normal everday life for granted. This book shows us that we should count our blessings for our quiet normal life. All families would benefit from reading this book. We could all learn how to stick together and work through it. My praise goes out to this wonderful mother that continues on when it would have been much easier to just walk out. This is a sign of true love and commitment.

5 out of 5 stars A Different Frontline.......2001-04-07

If you thought the Vietnam War was over, read again! Alicia J. Boyd boldly takes you to a different front line of battle and shares a gut-wrenching side of conflict tht many of us have never seen or want to admit to seeing. Deny it no longer: war is ugly, freedom is costly and we owe a tremendous debt to our veterans.

5 out of 5 stars Holy War.......2001-03-24

This is indeed a book you read in one sitting. You want so much to see the cliche's that your heart has grown to hope for. Not so in this book. It hits you like the private chill you get when a loved one opens their heart over a cup of coffee across your kitchen table. You know these people, you see them in the supermarket, at school functions with your kids and over the back fence mowing. You presume they have problems like everyone. You're wrong, and even as the story unfolds you're not sure you can handle the ride. You thought you'd buried Vietnam too when the terrible truth is the people we sent to fight it are fighting it still. I give this book 5 stars for Valor. The author isn't Tolstoy. She's still at War, she has no Peace. Didn't support our veterans the first time? Read this book and pray. Support them now.

    Book Description

The strange and eventful story of one of the great unsung heroes of modern science. Robert Hooke was a scientist and architect and during the late 17th century there was hardly a scientific advance or discovery that he did not have something to do with, or lay claim to. He payed his part in the invention of the barometer, the thermometer, the spring-driven watch, the air pump, the diving bell, the telescope and the calculator. He was also Christopher Wren's assistant in rebuilding London after the Great Fire of 1666. However, he died a pauper and his story is little known. Why was it that Hooke never won the reputation of his famous contemporaries, Isaac Newton, Robert Boyle, Edmund Halley and Christopher Wren? Stephen Inwood goes in search of the man and uncovers this troubled and troublesome chatracter and a story full of incident. Dr Stephen Inwood was born in London in 1947, and was educated at Dulwich College and at Balliol and St Antony's College, Oxford. For twenty-six years he was a college and university history lecturer, but he became a professional writer in 1999. He lives in Richmond, west London, with his wife and three sons.

4 out of 5 stars Even reading about his busy life makes you tired.......2005-05-20

Towards the end of his life, Robert Hooke was worried that many of his inventions would be claimed by others, as had already started to happen. This volume gives much credit to the man who is often overshadowed and almost forgotten - because he was born in an era of many extremely talented individuals.

Stephen Inwood has drawn extensively on material from Hooke's era and more recently to build up a picture of a very busy man, who is now remembered if at all for his work on springs ("Hooke's Law") and his arguments with Isaac Newton. Probably Newton's most famous words ("standing on the shoulders of giants") were written in a letter to Hooke. The weight of history sees the deified Newton crushing to oblivion some of those he stood upon. This was orchestrated more by his ardent admirers than Newton himself, although the father of gravity does not emerge from his debates with Hooke totally exonerated.

There are good insights into the Coffee House culture that was present in the last half of the 17th Century, and the workings of the newly formed Royal Society. Hooke was a pivotal individual in the early years of this august body, and his regular papers and experimental demonstrations were extremely prominent in their weekly meetings for 30 years. Hooke had a grand dream about the usefulness of science, and the expectation that everything would be explainable in the fullness of time, even if not in his lifetime. In short, he had a limitless confidence in the problem solving ability of science, turning his back on superstition that was so prevalent around him.

History has dealt with Robert Hooke too severely, and Inwood helps to address the balance. I am left a little breathless at the speed and scope of the tasks undertaken by Mr Hooke. Hindsight is a treacherous teacher, and can make the obvious trivial, whilst inappropriately assigning connections. Even allowing for the these tendencies, it seems that the legacy of Hooke is far reaching. He was ahead of his time, and could rightly claim to have done the founding work in many important areas [stellar parallax, watches, windmill, barometers, respiratory investigation, vivisection, celestial motion, telescopes, microscopes, navigation, light .......]. In some areas, his pioneering work was lost, and the advances not made again for 150 years.

The book would have benefited from some diagrams of the matters discussed; the mechanisms for watches, or the differences between reflecting and refracting telescopes, for example. This aside, the author does not hide Hooke's flaws, but dispels his reputation of being a bad tempered complainer. Hooke did have several major disagreements with learned gentlemen (Newton, Huygens, Hevelius). However Isaac Newton had similar disputes. What is important is that Hooke also had a large circle of friends, and several individuals with whom he worked successfully for many years (Sir Christopher Wren, Halley, Tompion and Harry Hunt).

Hooke is destined to be forever the bridesmaid, and never the bride. He was TOO busy, and if he started a train of thought, it was as if he had completed it in his own eyes. Many items of investigation were left unfinished, and only restarted when a rival had almost come upon a new or similar solution. This was the cause of many of his difficulties over establishing precedence in scientific matters. Not given the necessary credit, Hooke's work played the part of a catalyst to those in the wider community that was based around the Royal Society.

The final irony is that Hooke accused many at of the time of blatant plagiarism. He did not foresee that a significant number of buildings that he designed (and in many instances, oversaw the construction of) would be attributed others. There is much talk of "Wren churches" rebuilt after the disastrous fire of 1666. Hooke worked on not a few of these. Inwood details his working relationship with Wren, and rightly acknowledges his large contribution to both building design and the `project management' of getting a building completed. For most people, the contribution of Hooke to building would have been more than enough for a lifetime.

"[This book is] outstanding, well-written, and should be read by all men and women."--James Lewis, Jr., Ph.D., Executive Director, Education Center for Prostate Cancer Patients

Erectile dysfunction is a frequent consequence of prostate cancer and other prostate disease treatments. Though unwelcome and embarrassing, it doesn't have to end a couple's sex life. Both informative and practical, Intimacy with Impotence gives couples cause for hope. It discusses impotence in lay terms, provides information on the commercial therapies and medications both available and being researched now, and gives practical advice about lovemaking-from getting in the mood to commonsense suggestions to erection-less satisfaction. Written with complete honesty and compassion by a prostate cancer survivor and his wife, this is the essential resource for couples trying to reestablish intimacy and sex in the face of impotence.

This book makes you aware of many things nobody told me would happen after I had PC Surgery. Your whole system changes and without help it is difficult to live a normal decent life with your spouse. I should have bought it immediatly after surgery, 3 years ago, but didn't know about it until 2 months ago.
We Survivours of PC should unite to help others with the tremendous resources like this book and many others. Read the book, it will get you back on the right track. Love life is not over after PC!!

      5 out of 5 stars Helping others.......2006-03-01

I read this book to assist a friend that is trying to deal with his ED issues. He is single. I think that this book had addressed issues that are faced by married men as well as single men. I would like to see more books on this topic as it relates to single men because I believe that many single men believe that this limits their ability to have a fulfilling relationship with the opposite sex.

5 out of 5 stars A book for any couple.......2005-03-25

My wife and I are in our 70s with children and grand-children. We have had a very happy marriage, but did not really talk alot about our sex life together. I had surgery 18 months ago for prostate cancer and afterwards experienced impotency. This book was immensely helpful in working through this problem. We read sections together and felt that we could have used it years ago. We have better communication now than we ever did.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book as a couple before prostate cancer surgery!.......2004-10-05

My husband is a physician and I am a marriage and family therapist. This book covers, in a reader friendly manner, the proverbial psycho social medical waterfront concerning erectile dysfunction. The most important message is that about penile rehabilitation, ( to be done with doctor's approval ) to be practiced quite soon after recovery from surgery. Published in 2004, it has all the up to date information on both drug and other therapies. In our opinion, this book should be in the hands of every person considering prostate cancer surgery, so that they will be informed about what they need to do after follow up.

      5 out of 5 stars Must reading.......2004-10-05

This book not only covers all of the mechancial and pharmaceutical approaches to Erectile Dysfunction, but more importantly dwells on the social and psychological needs of the couple. Initimacy CAN be achieved with impotence, but NOT without love and understanding. This is well covered in the first half of the book.

This book is a "must read" not only for Prostate Cancer patients, but also to those suffering sexual dysfunction from many other causes whether they be physcial or psychological.

Like guardian angels, there are creatures that appear almost magically at the very moment their compassionate guidance and support is most needed. In times of change, loss, pain, or renewal, these animals, like signs on a long, dark road, guide humans through difficult choices.

The authors reveal the spiritual link that connects man to animal through true stories of people whose lives have been changed forever by relationships or encounters with animals. In co-author Charlene Johnson's inspirational personal story, a Labrador retriever she has never seen before saves her from a charging pit bull, then vanishes as quickly and mysteriously as it appeared. The wondrous stories continue, from the man whose dangerous encounter with an owl leads to a stunning breakthrough in his life to the heartwarming tale of the gentle dog that brought an elderly woman out of her apartment and helped her reconnect with people for the first time in years.

Animal Angels is a testament to the hope, love, and happiness that all people can find if they open their hearts and minds to the wonder of the special bond we share with animals and the life lessons they can provide.

        Book Description

The dyeing of textiles and other materials is a rewarding and delightful way to bring the colors of nature to daily living. In our technological age, dyes from plants offer subtle and diverse hues unavailable from synthetic dyestuffs. They connect practitioners to the environment as well as to the crafts and history of our ancestors. Dyes from native plants offer a special source of satisfaction and beauty. In this fascinating book, the authors have compiled extensive information to bring the techniques, plants, and lore of natural dyeing within every reader's reach. Chapters include discussions of color theory, dye equipment, dye processes, mordants, and easy-to-follow instructions for processing plants and dyeing fabrics. The core of the book is an exhaustive reference to the hundreds of colors that can be obtained from 158 commonly encountered North American plant species. The authors include detailed records of the various plant parts needed to produce different colors, cross-referencing each color to the Munsell color system, an internationally accepted standard for describing color. Finally, the book offers a practical botanical field guide that allows readers to locate and identify each plant in the book. Beautiful color photographs round out the volume.

        4 out of 5 stars A definite must-have for the natural dyer!.......2006-02-08

I happened across this book at my local spinning guild in Los Angeles. At first, it looked like the typical how-to book with limited new information, but as I leafed through it, I was immediately hooked by all the plants I DIDN'T know.

This book is definitely going to stay in the "most-used resources" part of my book collection. I'd recommend it for anyone interested in finding out more plants to toss in the dyepot! It's also good for those libraries in the central and eastern parts of the United States.

Which leads me to one of my quibbles with this book: it concentrates on the Eastern and Mid-West portions of the United States, and leaves out many dye plants common to the western states. Artimesia californica (California Sagebrush), all the Quercus species (California oaks) - these are the most notable for my area.

It should also be noted that there are many good dye plants that are NOT native to North America, such as Oxalis pes-caprae (Bermuda buttercup), and Cytisus scoparius (Scotch broom), and these are not listed in this book. It is, of course, the authors' prerogative to focus strictly on natives. However, dyers will need to use other resources to find the non-natives.

I do like that this book includes a description of the fermentation dye process, and the Munsell color notations of the colors given. However, in order to use this as a dye book, I'd like to see the colors and processes listed under each plant instead of in a separate chapter. I'm definitely going to make my own notations in this book -- which should tell you how impressed this librarian is!

4 out of 5 stars Dwell on your Child's Strengths.......2005-01-10

Stop Parenting and Start Coaching by Carol Carter, Gary Izumo, and Joe Martin is a quick read with lots of good information for parents of teens and for teens themselves. With helpful points to remember, which are easy to grasp and implement, the authors show how parents and teens will have a happier relationship, with better guidance for a successful maturity of the youngster, if parents adopt the same approach a good coach takes for his team. An example is that a parent has love for his or her teen while a coach has tough love. Parents often dwell on a youngster's mistakes, while a good coach builds on one's strengths. The book offers sound, easy to follow advice which proves itself in rearing successful and happy young people into maturity while maintaining good family relationships. A very helpful guide with a club parents can join for further support and monthly newsletters.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read- So informative!.......2004-06-03

This book is completely different from any parenting book I have seen before (and I work in publishing!). It's funny, insightful, and for once truly tries to understand the teenager's point of view. After all, isn't one of our teenagers' biggest problems that we don't listen?
This is a great investment to help improve your relationship with your child- don't pass this one by!

5 out of 5 stars Finding a New Way to Reach Teens.......2003-08-29

Sometimes, but not too often, readers are treated to something special that I call "A Lightbulb Book." This is the kind of book that turns on a mental lightbulb, throwing light on a dark area that has seemed impenetrable. As you read one of these books, you periodically thunk youself on the forehead and say, "Oh, so that's how it works!"

For those trying to rear teen-agers, "Stop Parenting and Start Coaching" is just such a book. It offers a novel idea for reaching teen-agers, an approach that makes so much sense that it's surprising nobody has caught onto it before. The authors offer readers a different kind of tool, one that might just catch teen-agers by surprise and with an open mind. This book would turn parents into coaches, guiding their children toward richer lives without nagging or preaching.

As an added bonus, "Stop Parenting and Start Coaching" is fun to read because the authors have chosen an unorthodox method of storytelling that also never nags or preaches. If you have read the bestselling "Who Moved My Cheese?"--a book that used parable to show business people how to cope with a changing workplace---you will be delighted to see a similar style in presenting big ideas in an engaging way. "Stop Parenting and Start Coaching" is more like reading a good story than a self-help book.

If you are a parent (or grandparent or teacher) who has tried the usual ways of reaching teen-agers, give this a try. It's less stressful than yelling and more fun than hyperventilating. It might even be more effective. Parents---excuse me, coaches---and teens can both be winners.

                Book Description

An intimate look, from a female perspective, at the world of the Hasidic Jew in pre-World War I Central Europe. This is a fascinating memoir of a young girl awakening to spirituality and religious consciousness in a unique place and time. Malkah Shapiro's tale, translated and presented in Rabbi Nehemia Polen's capable hands, is poetic and sensitive, providing a rich and inviting history for its readers.

5 out of 5 stars Window into a remarkable world.......2002-04-03

This beautiful memoir opened a window into a world that I knew once existed, but that I had never actually seen before. We have all heard rebbe stories, have learned from the books left by these men, and have read of the lives of their followers. This, however, is a glimpse into the private lives of the aristocrats of European Hasidism. I do not use the word aristocracy lightly. The world of European Hasidism was highly stratified. The Rebbe's Daughter was top drawer. She lived in a large compound of servants, storerooms, and guest rooms for visitors to her father. There were coachmen, cooks, and governesses. There was no idle luxury. Every member of the rebbe's family lived a life of constant and devoted service. They served the Rebbe's followers, but also, and far more importantly, they served God.

Devotion to Torah pervaded every aspect and every moment of life. There is a kind of awe-filled beauty to a life in which every action, every thought is examined and consecrated to divine service. Devotion to Torah was so complete that even in the icy Polish winter the family shunned clothing made of wool. Better to shiver in silk and cotton than to risk a chance linen fiber that may render a woolen coat forbidden shatnes.

I cannot decide which aspect of the Rebbe's Daughter is more remarkable. The way it shows us a vivid picture of a vanished time and place, or the way it opens before us the way of thinking of a mind totally devoted to Torah.
