A great war story.......2002-03-19
This book kept my interest the intire time. Not once did i put it down. It really makes you picture everything
A wonderful book.......2002-01-25
For a person who is not extremely fond of war stories, I found, to my surprise, that I could not set the book aside. The stories are truly moving, and I felt as if I were in the shoes of the author. The author does a beautiful job of balancing the intense, emotional aspects of war and the more enjoyable personal experiences of traveling and forming new relationships. This delicate balance gives the book an honest and realistic feel, while giving the reader an interesting representation of what Vietnam was really like. I wish all such books were as candidly and genuinely written as this one.
A darned good book.......2001-12-21
While apologetic about his "accented" writing, the author smoothly and simultaneously blend the clinical with the emotional. Perspectives and comments are incisive and his familiarity with American history surprising. While observing the progressive transformation of an immigrant into an American citizen I also sensed rebellious knuckles in smooth surgical gloves. Riveting, upfront, entretaining, sad, funny. You may not agree with the politics but the facts are irrefutable. An excellent read.
Sharp MentalFragments.......2001-12-06
This book is riveting and powerful. Before you open it, give yourself some time because you wont be able to put it down. Put on a surgical mask and gloves because you're going to be right there operating on casualties and risking your life while doing it. Funny, sad, serious and very enlightening. I loved it!

A great study of a great man.......1999-01-02
When Edgar Allen Poe died in Baltimore in l849, John G. Morris was already one of that city's prominent men. His "Lutherville Female Seminary," a pioneer educational insitution in this country exclusively for women, was to open just five years later.. As the Civil War loomed on the horizon, Morris was a Union man in a Southern city. He used to run to the train station to wave flags and shout "Hurrah" at Union troops passing through Maryland . A Lutheran Pastor and much more, Morris helped found Baltimore's world famous Peabody Institute and achieved world class recognition as an entomologist. Like many l9th century clergymen, he saw himself as a shaper of culture and destiny for his country and his city. His relationship with the Smithsonian Institute in Washington was just one of his many cultural and patriotic achievements. If "What is Past is Prologue," Dr. Kurtz has given us a valuable insight into 21st century America in his well-written biography of John G. Morris.
Book Description
Dr. Patti Feuereisen has been working with teenage girls for twenty-five years and has been a pioneer in helping abused girls find their voices. What she discovered in listening to hundreds of girls was not only that sexual abuse of young girls is in fact epidemic, but if the abuse can be processed when girls are still young—in their teens and early twenties—remarkable healing can take place. Girls and young women who are given an opportunity to speak out will most often go on to thrive as adults; without such an opportunity the traumatic effects of their abuse will often continue to cause them difficulty long into adulthood.
Invisible Girls weaves together powerful first-person narratives with gentle guidance and seasoned insights to help girls through the maze of feelings that swirl around the abuse experience. This gives every young woman who struggles with the scars of sexual abuse the courage that comes from knowing that she is not alone, while other girls come out from behind the veil of secrecy to become vibrant, healthy, and whole.

Resourceful Book for Abused Teens.......2007-09-12
I am a clinical social worker in Louisiana. This book has been helpful for several of my clients. The book includes several girls' stories, which have helped to normalize my clients' experiences. It also includes a question/answer section that seems to cover many topics that teenage girls may be afraid to ask themselves. I also found the "Resource Center" at the end of the book helpful. Dr. Patti has a website and is resposive to questions via that site.
Terrific!.......2007-05-06
This is a wonderful and very helpful book. Dr. Patti is also a great person!

A special book just for girls!.......2006-07-31
This is a brilliant and inspiring book!! I would give it 6 stars. A big thank you to all the girls who came out with their stories about abuse, and a special thanks to Dr. Patti for her wonderful work. Her girlthrive website is also a great resource.
I highly recommend this book to anyone, survivor or not, we can learn so much from it and teach ourselves and others around us about awareness.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Social Worker's review.......2006-07-11
As an intern during graduate school, I worked with girls who had experienced sexual abuse/incest. In my attempt to read every book on the topic, I found Invisible Girls. I couldn't stop talking about it. I wanted all of my peers and colleagues to read it as well. This book is beginning to help me define my professional career path.
Superb resource for all - survivors and professionals.......2006-04-26
An excellent and invaluable resource to all who have been touched in any way by sexual abuse: this book is compassionate, insightful and healing in its portrayal and treatment of sexual abuse of children, adolescents and young women. The real-life experiences are presented in a way that is sensitive, thoughtful and wise. They will resonate with the experience of most anyone who has suffered the affliction and trauma of sexual abuse.
As a mature, adult male (in my 50's) who is the survivor of childhood sexual abuse, I was able to recognize my experience in the stories presented. Even more, it gave me the tools, skills and empathy to approach my sister who still suffered the debilitating effects of her own childhood experience of sexual abuse. This book and its treatment gave us both the courage and confidence to break free of the grip of secrecy so that we could approach our other siblings and begin a process of family healing.
Finally, as one who accompanies others as guide/director on their spiritual journeys -- I find this book invaluable - and highly recommend it as an insightful and practical aid in understanding and supporting those who struggle with the scars and unfreedom of sexual, physical and emotional abuse.

Customer Reviews:
A great book for everyone.......2003-04-02
Hey, i read The Lucifer Crusade 3 years ago. I began reading it and was immedietally captivated by Mack Maloneys great writing style. He takes things and puts them into situations which you will never expect. Then when i finished the book, i stoped reading the Wingman series. Last year or so, i came upon the book and decided to buy the first few. After reading the first 2 books and then The Lucifer Crusade again, i was able to further understand the book. I loved it even more. Now i am continuing to read the series. Still however, so far i think that the Lucifer Crusade is easily one of the best if not the best wingman book. I would HIGHLY reccomend it to anyone interested in reading about cool airplanes, awesome battles which last for pages and pages, and hot love scenes. This book had everything. As you see, i give it 5 stars (although it deserves 100). If you are feeling like taking a chance, get messy, grab the Lucifer Crusade and have the best time of your life reading. I hope this helps you find what you are looking for.
Lots of action and intrigue.......2002-05-02
This is the third book in the Wingman series and it is right up there with the best of them. Lots of flying, lots of action, weirdness, sex, ghosts ... you name it. I realized about halfway through that this book, in a way, prophesized the Persian Gulf War. (It was written about a year before.) A lot of fun and awelcome change from more stuffy books of the action-adventure genre.
Lame techno-adventure.......2002-03-22
This was the first and only "Wingman" book I've ever read, a sort of straight, pulp techno-thriller series set in the aftermath of WWIII. (The US is still picking itself up after narrowly surviving an overwhelming Soviet attack; colluding politicians undermine the bare victory while the nation's splintering into numerous, autonomous zones further prevent it from taking action; global disintegration allows the rise of numerous freemens' armies and an every-man-for-himself mentality). Hawk Hunter was one of the US's most gifted fighter pilots prior to the war, and of course its only chance for survival in its aftermath. Flying the only known remaining F-16 fighter, and hitched up to the Pacific American Air Force (who largely fly lesser planes like the F-4 and the Tigershark) Hunter remains the only pilot capable of beating back America's enemies. In this episode (I mean, this book), Hunter flies to North Africa on the trail of the evil Viktor Robotov, a Soviet madman largely responsible for defiling both Hawk's nation and his girlfriend. Leaving Casablanca, Hawk links up with a group of British adventurers, self-styled modern knights on a crusade against a shadowy warlord known as Lucifer. All of North Africa seems desperate to get out of the way as Lucifer amasses a huge army to conquer that part of the world. Hawk quickly realizes that the feared Lucifer is actually Robotov in disguise. Against Lucifer's army, the modern knights claim the intact, if powerless derelict of an American aircraft carrier, planning to tow it across the Mediterranean to become a floating airbase from which to fly against Lucifer at the mouth of the Suez in what promises to be an epic battle....
...that never comes off. Because I enjoyed "War Heaven" I thought I could also like at least one of the "Wingman" books, but this one spoiled me for the whole series. None of the action has that "you are there" quality - and even when describing action occurring right then, the book sounds like it's talking about something that happened last week. The characters walk around like bloodless robots. The evil Robotov, when we finally meet him here, is the biggest cheat of all: just a moron in a dark robe ala "Darth Sidious"; the sort of dumb jerk who blames other people for his own mistakes and has to shout everything. (Why not make him Hawk's father while we're at it?) Then there are the military details and the action - the techno details are pretty thin and the air combat not quite thrilling. Let's face it, even if you didn't pick up this book for its hardcore military/techno-realism, you'll still be left hungry. Other technothrillers are out there with less implausible plots (not involving post WWIII war torn lands ala "Red Dawn") with more accurate detail, so why buy any of these books?
Action Packed.......2002-03-17
I liked the book a lot. I've only read four of the series, but I'm hooked on them anyway. If you like action packed novels that leave you wanting to find out what will happen next, then read this book. It will make you mad, glad, and leave you satisfied. A great book.
The only Wingman novel I ever read.......1999-03-16
Hawk Hunter was once a captain in the United States Air Force when the Soviet Union attacked and created a radioactive wasteland from Oklahoma to the Dakotas called the Wasteland. After World War III ended with an unjust peace treaty signed by a traitorous vice president, the Soviet Union splits the country in two creating the Circle in the east. The West Coast becomes Pacific Amermica. Hawk Hunter's now an officer in the Pacific American Air Force. As the book opens, two mercenary pilots from an outfit called the Ace Wrecking Crew, one of whom is named Elvis, find a man tied up in the hot sun of the Azores, the site of a former American base, and he's left to die by two of Lucifer's henchmen. Hunter then heads to Casablanca, a city built on a movie set. He meets with an arms smuggler named Lord Lard. He also meets another man who says he's joining the fight against Lucifer. Lucifer had put a price on Hunter's head and eveyone in this new world is out to collect the reward. Hunter soon meets the British members of the Gibralter Defense Force, former RAF pilots who tell him that World War III never really ended. The book reaches its climax when Hunter and Lucifer confront each other in the Rhub-al-Khali. Huter wants to bring Lucifer, whose real name is Viktor Robotov, a Soviet agent who created the Circle and started the Circle War. Hunter wants to bring Viktor back to the United States to stand trial as a war criminal but he's killed by Nazis. Elvis and his partner call him. He asks about the people from the carrier that they'd salvaged to stop Lucifer from breaking out into the Mediterranean. They say they didn't survive.

Good, But.......2002-09-24
This is just one edition in the Wingman series. The armies of a band of conquering neo-nazis are posed to take over what is left of the former united states of America. First they have to stop in central America. Into this mess flies Hawk Hunter, always resiliant in his F-16 he flies though a post apocalyptic.
There is, of course one problem Hawk Hunter does all of this HIMSELF!! He dopes though the world and of all enemies he runs across with the help of allies he just happens to run into.
The Deathlands has a group of 9. Ben Raines and his rebels have an entire army, Hawk does it all himself, it is at times pointless.
Overall-Read only if you really REALLY like Hawk Hunter.
Incredible book that would make a great movie!!.......1998-06-08
An incredible book that draws the reader into the war-torn world of Hawk Hunter as he races to free the Panama Canal from the clutches of the Nazis. This is a must read book for people who love war novels!

Customer Reviews:
Once the action started it wouldn't stop!.......1999-04-26
I loved the way the author described the Freedom Express and their Howitzer appropriatly named the "Big Dick". Towards the end when the Freedom Express really looked like it was not going to make it was probably the best part of the book. And having the Ten Miles to Hell just added to the action. I think the author ended the book great with the last second cavalry charge by the 101 Airborne. I would recomend this book to anyone who loves the action to last to the last moment and the suspense to be killer.

Hunter is back for more!.......2000-03-26
Once again, Mack Maloney has written a book that I couldn't put down. Skyfire is filled with tons of action and even more mystery. If you are just starting the series, then this is a great one to start with. Series readers with find Skyfire to be an excellent continuation of the series!
Book Description
The reunited American continent is divided once again. While a brutal army of Nordic conquerors occupies the lands of the east, a band of Asian mercenaries seeks to dominate the American west. Worse yet, Hawk Hunter, has seemingly vanished into thin air!
Customer Reviews:
Great book, Got me hooked.......2000-02-15
This was the first of the several that I read. I got hooked immediatly. I found the love of my life.
I thought that this book was great.......1999-10-31
In half of this book hunter is thougth to be dead. In the book USA is taken over by the fourth reach. Hunter and his fellow americans tray to take it back. I have read 1-9 and this is as good as all the other books in the WingMan set.
"Fast, Entertaining Read.".......1999-07-18
Once again another quick, entertaining story from Mack Maloney. I liked the concentration on the dilemmas of the secondary characters like Frost and Fitz as they try to survive in an America under the heel of Neo-Nazis. As usual in Wingman, the bad guys are sadistic and perverted. The United Americans come up with some pretty elaborate schemes to battle the Nazis. Final battle was pretty good, though the fight scenes were not as awesome as in previous Wingman stories.
It started out really boring but came back fighting!.......1999-05-06
It started out slow with a lot of infomation from the previous story, but about half way through it came back strong. My favorite part was when the battleship sailed up through the Big Muddy(the mississippi). The way Hunter went into hiding so eveyone thought he was dead and then started to terrorize the Burning Cross really added to the excitment. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes adventure and a good read.

Customer Reviews:
Very solid, if not particularly innovative.......2004-08-01
This is a very well-written and well-organized book about problem-solving within families. It goes through the process in a step-by-step manner, and gives many example scenarios. Step One is setting a cooperative by clearing stating the problem in a non-accusatory form. Next, brain-storming is the generation of possible solutions, with no regard for whether the suggestions are feasible or tolerable; this opens up creativity, and can inject a little humor into an otherwise-tense situation. Step three is to evaluate the list of suggestions, based on feasibility/doability, tolerability to all parties, and projected efficacy. The agreed-upon solutions are then implemented and feedback is gathered regarding whether the results meet the family's needs.
My only concern here is nested in the population with whom I work as a clinical psychologist in a community mental health agency; we work with the most emotionally impaired youngsters and their families. The techniques described in this book require a higher level of maturity, frustration tolerance, self-control, and flexibility than some of our families can currently achieve. For our milder clients, and for families in general, the methods described should be quite helpful.
There really isn't anything new in this book, but problem-solving methods get a very thorough, detailed explanation here, with plenty of examples.
This is Part 2 of a 2-part series, that might have originally been planned for more than that. This book definitely makes more sense if read after Part 1.
Improve your parenting skills, but buy both Volumes 1 and 2........2000-05-17
This is part 2 of a two volume set. See my review of part 1. Although some parents may lean towards buying only one, you'll learn more if you read both volumes. Much of the information in part 2 assumes an understanding of the principles discussed in part 1. Part 2 covers communication and problem solving skills and how these skills can be applied to solve sexuality, academic difficulties, drugs and alcohol use. The last two chapters provide an excellent discussion on compliance vs oppositional/defiant behavior in children. You may want to look up other books by Marion Forgatch and Gerald Patterson. They are basic researchers in the field of child psychology and behavior who take their research findings (and the works of others) and present them in nontechnical terms for parents and mental health professionals.

Book Description
In recent years Rembrandt's oeuvre and influence have been hotly debated. A number of paintings hitherto said to be his, have been reattributed by some scholars to pupils or even to obscure followers, while other works have been radically reinterpreted. This lavishly illustrated book, containing essays by some of the world's leading scholars on seventeenth-century Dutch art, is the first critical review of the present state of Rembrandt studies finds itself in as a result. A new tradition of painting grew up in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century, in which artists were encouraged to explore the limits of their own capabilities. Rembrandt's portraits and other portraits and other paintings laid bare the inner life of his human and religious subjects in a way equaled by none. Greatly interested in everything he saw, Rembrandt set down the landscapes, and the events that took place in his own surroundings, in works that make him one of the greatest artists the world has ever known.Rembrandt: A Genius and his Impact is published to accompany a major touring show of paintings, etchings and drawings – which includes important examples by his pupils and followers – shown in Australia in 1997–8.

Book Description
Sent across the ocean by their parents and taken in by foster parents and distant relatives, approximately 1,000 children, ranging in age from fourteen months to sixteen years, landed in the United States and out of Hitler's reach between 1934 and 1945. Seventy years after the first ship brought a handful of these children to American shores, the general public and many of the children themselves remain unaware of these rescues, and the fact that they were accomplished despite powerful forces in and outside the government that did not want them to occur. This is the first published account, told in the words of the children and their rescuers, to detail this unknown part of America's response to the Holocaust. It will challenge the belief that Americans did nothing to directly and actively save Holocaust victims. Judith Tydor Baumel, Holocaust scholar and sister of two rescued children, provides an introduction explaining why, when, how, and where the rescues were carried out, who the heroes and heroines were, and which individuals and organizations placed almost insurmountable obstacles in their path. This account presents both recollections and experiences recorded at the time of the rescued children, their descendants, and their rescuers. The story demonstrates what a small group of determined people can do to change the course of history.

Don't Wave Goodbye.......2004-09-15
I just had the pleasure of reading a newly released book, Don't Wave Goodbye, published by Praeger Greenwood, June 2004 (1-800-225-5800) which offers the reader first person accounts of the "American" Kindertransports -- about one thousand unaccompanied children rescued from the Nazis during the Holocaust by American individuals and organizations. All the material was written by the children and their rescuers and are their own accounts. The children begin by telling through letters and remembrances of the de-humanization of the Jews; the systematic removal of rights, property and hope by the Nazis and Hitler. They go on to relate to us how their desperate parents were willing to send them to America in order to save them when they themselves could not leave. This was a daunting task as it required getting through a bureaucracy of red tape which sometimes took months and years. Then the accounts describe the childrens' voyages to the US, the culture shock and assimilation into western culture; the desperate searches for information of the loved ones they left behind which often ended quite tragically; and finally the journeys back to their homelands to find closure and peace. Don't Wave Goodbye offered up these accounts which were sometimes very painful to tell and painful to hear in order to help us appreciate the freedom that we have, realize that it is a precious thing and never take it for granted. These children were the lucky ones. They escaped the Nazis but so many more of them didn't. Don't Wave Goodbye shakes the reader into noncomplacency and demands action when human dignity is trampled into the ground. Protect freedom at all costs. Never take it for granted!
