SUPERB READ.......2003-06-03
Without self-pity nor malice Gilberg writes of a challenging childhood with two dysfunctional parents. This is far more than a retelling of this family's painful history; it's a book that encourages any reader to look into the deeper reality of the events in their family's life enabling reconciliation and healing to result. Gilberg's honest sharing, laced with love and respect for her father, left this reader glad to have "met" this
man. I like him. And it's a book that will bring some understanding and peace regarding our involvement in Vietnam which I also found helpful.
An Affecting Memoir-- Beautifully written.......1999-03-18
This is a terrific book, one that works into the memory from a series of photos and a set of fixed memories of a difficult man and a difficult childhood. it's so much more than a tale of dysfunction though. Its the elegant tale of a survivor, of a little girl and a nation.
This book is not getting the attention it deserves!

Good Story, Bad Book.......2007-07-21
Though meaning well, this book couldn't keep me wanting more. The story is riddled with poor grammar, minuscule chapters, and frequent mentioning of "the sickness." I swear, by the end of the second chapter, "the sickness" was mentioned so many times that "the sickness" lost all meaning to me, as she also tried to make "the sickness" sound overtly ominous. Whatever. And don't get me started on the somewhat open-ended finale. So how does she cope with her past and find a way to move on? Good question.
amazing courageous woman.......2006-03-22
I picked up this book, and could not put it down. I was riveted by the courage of this girl, who endured so much for so long. It is amazing to me that these things can happen, and in many instances right under our noses. This girl was at the mercy of her father, and the only person who could have helped her, was too being abused. I admire this woman, because she has come so far from where she began, she learned to let go of the resentment and hate that her father deserves. In letting go, she set herself free. I commend her for this, because now she has taken control of her life, and chosen not to let anything bring her down. I can only hope i would have half her courage.
eye opening account of what many children endure behind closed door.......2006-03-12
I had to read this book for a class in college.
Not only did the author make you feel like you were actually there, but I honestly could not put it down. (And I am sorry to say, I hate reading what my teachers assign me) It was an eye opening account of what many children endure behind closed door. I recommend this book esp. to Psychology and Education students, faculty, or even someone in the profession already.
Appreciating Daddy's Apprentice.......2000-12-28
Sandy Wilson's "Daddy's Apprentice" is an account that deserves serious attention. One of the many profound issues that this work addresses is that of the devices employed by abusers to intimidate their victims into silent compliance. The courage summoned by the author to reveal her secrets broke the fundamental bonds of her father's control. The themes of guilt, fear, and accountability are brilliantly woven between the lines of this text. The storyline is exciting and fast-paced, while deeper personal and social issues are subtly explored. The reader is not bombarded with the explicit details or the extent of the sexual abuse, however, the issues of power, violation, guilt, and perpetual dread are apparent. Meanwhile, the notion of "pigeon-holing," which is only mentioned directly towards the end of this memoir, is ever-present throughout this book. Sandy accepts a society that views her as "white-trash" and by this, our society not only minimizes, but compounds her sufferring. Nonetheless, the author does not depict herself as a martyr, a helpless female, or a heroine. She addresses her situation honestly, and reccounts her experiences without prejudice. This work not only lends understanding to a very sensitive subject for every reader, but empowers those who can identify with Sandy's struggle. As this is a true story, it cannot be neatly packaged up and shipped out. Therefore, the unanswered questions, the jagged edges, linger with the reader and offer a sense of wonderment at the vague line between what can be seen and what lurks in the shadows beyond. I invite those who pick up this book to examine such themes as co-dependency, enablement, the depth of trust and the depth of fear, isolation (personally and geographically), stereotyping, and the ease at which we can be manipulated by others. Sandy's gift to the public in sharing her story must be noticed and appreciated.

Great Book.......2007-03-26
Easy to learn . have more than 600 traditional and modern cocktail . explain everything such as Spirit , liquor etc . the book is really grat for bartender and for someone want to make a cocktail and to know the background of Spirits , liquor , wine , beer , etc ...
REally great for the bar
Great learning cookbook.......2006-10-15
I borrowed this book from the library because I wanted to get a little background knowledge on bartending. This book was a great and easy read. It shows you the different types of glasses and which type of glass holds what type of drink (there are pictures too). You learn about the basic bartender's equipment like shakers, blenders, corkscrews, and accessories and tips on what to pick. You learn about the different techniques and crafts to create that special drink and then most of the book is basically a cookbook of recipes for the 600 different traditional and modern classic cocktails. There's a little history on some drinks, like who made it or when was it created. The last chapter features some tips for preventing or curing a hangover. This is a very simple, easy-to-read book; nothing boring. Now I have a real basic idea of how bartenders make their drinks, or what those uniquweird-named drinks are really made of. Great keeper for the beginning bartender or bartender-wannabe. ;)
A great introduction to liqour.......2006-04-24
I'm not a bartender and don't plan on becoming one, but I received this book on my 21st birthday and have found it very helpful. I think the background information on major types of liqour is interesting. The author's comments throughout are very witty. I use the recipe index most often and have discovered some new favorites. On occassion, I have had to explain to a bartender what to put in cocktail that I have found in the book and wanted to try, although I'm not sure if that really speaks to the book or the quality of the bartenders! For the novice drinker, I think this is a great handbook. The cover is very attractive and it looks good on the bar at home too.
A thorough edition to any bar........2004-05-20
I wouldn't dub this as being one of the "best" bartenders guides on the market, but it would definately help out anyone from novice to pro.
Explains everything from setting up your bar to how scotch whisky is made. With a enough cocktails listed to keep the party going strong, and even the pickiest of guests pleased.
I'm a bartender, and I can personally tell you, you can never have enough bar books behind your bar. I've looked through two, three, sometimes even FOUR bar books in a frenzy trying to find some "off the wall" drink for a particular customer at any given time. Sometimes you find it, sometimes you don't... But you will increase your chances of finding the right drink with more bar books at your disposal. and that will always have a direct impact on your tips. The New American Bartenders handbook would definatly be at home behind your bar, for sure a useful reference.

A very useful book to invest in.......2001-03-23
I bought this book in speculation. I have in the past bought many curtain books and found them not particularly helpful. After reading this book, I went straight onto their website and ordered other books that they have written.
This is probably going to be the best book on Curtains that you will ever buy and thoroughly recommend it.
A very Beautiful Curtain Book.......2000-09-19
The Pictures and Designs are the very latest, some of them do not even require sewing. My husband, whom is a Curtain Track Installer for more than 10 years; whom had installed curtain in more than 1000 homes also feel that the Designs that Catherine drew in this book are not only simple but nice. We are all very impressed by the up-to-date, mostly Simple designs which are very appealing to customers of the young generation. We will recommend our Customers to take these Unique Patterns. We intend to order one more book and cut them as Samples for us to bring round to show our Potential Customers. Thank you Catherine Merrick. Fm: Felis, e-mail: thechua@pacific.net.sg

As a lactation consultant, I recommend this book to every.......2004-02-08
mother with a new baby who is ambivalent about going back to work. With the rising cost of mediocre child care, it is impossible for most people to justify the expense of going to work. Being with mom is an inherent need that all babies have, and it is just as important to meet this need as it is to feed them. This book is wonderful, and I highly recommend it.

This Book Changed My Life!.......2001-09-27
I am so happy to have found this book when I did! It changed my life almost 13 years ago, and so many times I wonder how my life might be different if I hadn't read it. I strongly encourage every mom to read it, whether you are a new or seasoned mom, whether your currently work full-time or part-time or have chosen to be home to raise your children. I guarantee that you will find it thought-provoking! I was a career woman when I became pregnant with twins. I believed the ever-popular myth that women could easily "have it all," happily juggling the perfect family life with the perfect full-time career. As soon as I became a mother, I realized more than ever before that life is full of trade-offs: there are only so many hours in a day, so many days in a week, so many years at home in a child's life. I knew I had to choose my priorities carefully. This unique book includes material not easily found in the mainstream media. Through its commentary and essays, it begged me to think through my short and long-term priorities and choose what was right for me and my family. What's A Smart Woman Like You Doing at Home? helped me to see the "big picture" and helped me realize the path I wanted and needed to take to fulfill my wish of becoming the best mother I could be. Reading the material covered in the three sections, Searching for Supermom and Discovering Home * Startling Realizations and Gentle Discoveries * Mothers and Society -- Perceptions and Possibilities, was an eye-opener and a much-cherished gift! My thanks to the authors and the many mothers who shared their heartfelt stories.
We Are Not Alone!.......2001-06-05
Finally, a book for intelligent women who choose the challenging demands of staying at home to raise a family - a choice that requires use of every instinct and every ounce of intellect we possess!
"What's A Smart Woman Like You Doing At Home?" chronicles the real-life struggle mothers face when giving up (or putting on hold) the career they may have nurtured for years in order to nurture their children full-time instead. Without knocking moms who do return to the work force, this thoughtful book offers support and encouragement for new mothers who have trouble adjusting to their new and very different lifestyle, experienced mothers who need a "pick-me-up", and all mothers who have been faced with the question - what IS a smart woman like you doing at home?
For me, this book is like an old friend who is always there with an encouraging word just when I need it most. Hope you enjoy it!
This Book is Fantastic.......2000-12-08
This is a fantastic book, I recommend it to any woman who is pregnant or is contemplating staying home with her children.
It is a wonderful resource for women who are sick and tired of having former co-workers ask them what they do all day. And for women who have been told they are too smart to be wasting themselves at home.
It discusses some of the emotional aspects of being home and it doesn't sugar-coat how difficult it can be to make the transition from career to home. I read this book while on maternity leave with my first child. As a 30-something career woman I found this book a to be a fanastic help while I was making the decision whether to turn in my resignation or return to work.
in praise of freedom of choice.......1999-12-06
I think the review from "northeast USA" was way overblown. I too thought I would continue working when I became a parent - but that changed when I actually became one, and realized no other caregiver would love our child as much as we, her parents. This book does not condemn parents who work outside the home, but encourages mothers to make their own choice! So little of what is available in the media encourages the choice to be at home, it is nice to read a factual book that lets us know mothers at home are not throwbacks to the dark ages, and that we have the opportunity to make different choices at different stages of our lives.

Book Description
In 1948 R. O. Blechman, an eighteen-year-old displaced New Yorker and college freshman bored with life in an Ohio college town, wrote to the world-famous artist Saul Steinberg. His letter was a twenty-four-page illustrated and hand-sewn booklet entitled "Attention: Mr. Steinberg," requesting an original drawing "inscribed to me, please." A drawing did arrive, wrapped and carefully tied with red-and-white bakery string, thus beginning for Blechman a lifetime of admiration and study. Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) was one of America's most beloved artists, renowned for the covers and drawings that appeared in The New Yorker for over five decades. Attn: Mr. Steinberg tells the story of Blechman's life as it intertwines with Steinberg's and with New York, a city loved by both men that becomes a third character in this charming book. Both men profoundly influenced younger generations of artists. A generous sampling of their art-drawings, cartoons, and photographs-is included, many never before published.
Book Description
A legendary figure in his own lifetime, Rabbi Eliahu ben Shlomo Zalman (1720-1797) was known as the "Gaon of Vilna." He was the acknowledged master of Talmudic studies in the vibrant intellectual center of Vilna, revered throughout Eastern Europe for his learning and his ability to traverse with ease seemingly opposed domains of thought and activity. After his death, the myth that had been woven around him became even more powerful and was expressed in various public images. The formation of these images was influenced as much by the needs and wishes of those who clung to and depended on them as by the actual figure of the Gaon. In this penetrating study, Immanuel Etkes sheds light on aspects of the Vilna Gaon's "real" character and traces several public images of him as they have developed and spread from the early nineteenth century until the present.
