An Irish Cleric Fighting for Dixie.......2000-10-29
The Confederacy's Fighting Chaplain, Father John B. Bannon by Phillip Thomas Tucker, is an excellent biography and Civil War History. The book gives the background of Father Bannon, beginning with his education in Ireland and his service in St. Louis. The conflicts which were tearing St. Louis, as well as the nation, apart are well reflected in the life of Bannon as he was making his decision as to how to respond to the gathering storm. Not limiting his narrative to a mere recitation of facts, Tucker acquaints the reader with the factors working on, and the thoughts going on within Bannon's mind which led him to his conclusion that the Confederacy represented the cause of freedom and Christian civilization in America. The chapters covering Bannon's service as chaplain for the First Missouri Confederate Brigade skillfully blend the details of the chaplain's life with the greater history of the War in general. The final section of the book relates Bannon's unique service as a diplomatic agent on behalf of the Confederacy and his role as personal emissary from President Davis to Pope Pius IX. Davis had asked Bannon to undertake a mission to Ireland to attempt to dissuade Irish from enlisting in the Union Army. It was Bannon's initiative to undertake the overture which almost resulted in recognition of the Confederacy by the Vatican. The unique intertwining of Bannon's roles as chaplain and diplomat within the larger story in which he played a part, make this a very worthwhile addition to the Civil War literature

Interesting book about an interesting man.......1999-11-20
It is false that this book is ONLY for "mathematician fans and armchair philosophers" as the Amazon review insinuates. The book contains many mathematical and serious philosophical articles as well as invaluable personal information about one of the most interesting logicians of all times... Useful and inspiring. A good antidote against dessicated academics!

This book is awesome!.......2001-06-19
This is a great book. It has answers for all your kids put you through. I have a lot of parenting books, but this one really gets down to the nitty gritty of how to react to your kids' behavior. It tells you specifically what to do. Any parent who has kids ages 2 to 12 will benefit. I've even tried some of the stuff on my 13 and 14 year olds. Works great!

Customer Reviews:
The name is B. Smith not Wannabe.......1999-12-10
I receive B. Smith and her work as very original, tastefully done, professional and with lots of flare and detail. She has an eclectic style, which I feel is smart in the sense that people of different styles (contemporary to modern) can connect with her. She's a phenonmenal women that wears many hats or should I say aprons. I've just learned she has highly acclaim and prominent restaurants in the New York area. If I'm not mistaken, I believe she has a restaurant located on Wall Street. That's pretty impressive. I have admired B. Smith's work for a long time and would definately say she's not trying to clone herself to be Martha Stewart,II. So, reveiwer from PA give Ms. Barbara (B.) Smith more credit than that... she's earned it.
Classy Lady.......1999-12-01
I have not purchased Riturals and Celebrations, yet. However, I plan to purchase it TODAY. B.'s books are hot in bookstores and running low on the shelves. I have no doubt that it is five star because she is a five star lady. I am an aspiring fan of B. and truly enjoy her TV program. It's all that and more. She definately has STYLE and CLASS. You go Ms. B.! P.S. I WANT HER MAGAZINE and can't find it. Can someone help me out? P L E A S E!
She has Style and it's all her own.......1999-09-27
This was a great book. It was not just a cookbook but it provided great ideas for entertaining. What a refreshing experience to find someone black, beautiful and creative providing great advise on entertaining. The reviewer from PA has it all wrong about this being another Martha Steward copycat. She has very little in common with M. Steward except they are in the same business. B.Smith provides her own style and appears to really enjoy what she is doing. One other thing she doesn't have in common with M. Steward is that she appears to be a very nice person inside and out.
and she's coming home..to.......1999-08-06
Scottdale, & Everson PA welcomes outstanding author-at 125th Homecoming, Booksiging,at Providence bookstore, & Parade..'99 Committee says thanks.
A wonderful book! I loved it........1999-02-20
B. Smith is so inspirational and real. I loved this book and I have given it as a gift to all my friends. More books from B. I want to be like B.!

Book Description
The first comprehensive illustrated study of the use of amulets around the world and throughout history
• Explores not only the substances and symbolism from which amulets derive, but also the people and objects they protect
• Explains the differences between and the purposes of amulets, talismans, charms, and fetishes
All over the world and throughout history amulets have offered protection against negative forces, whether witchcraft, the evil eye, enemies, sickness, or accidents. Intricately beautiful or starkly simple, they come in an astonishing variety of guises: from stones, shells, and seeds, through animal tails, teeth, and claws, to beads, mirrors, needles, and bells.
With over 400 lavish color photographs, this book explores amulets from every angle, including their symbolism and the diverse material used to craft them as well as the people and objects they protect. Sheila Paine traveled all over the world--from Afghanistan, Russia, and Albania, to Cameroon, Tunisia, and Mexico--to research the form, properties, and use of amulets, whether for health and safety or as channels for spiritual or magical powers. Worn as necklaces, sewn to clothing, painted on buildings, or hung in vehicles, amulets guard babies and brides; warriors, hunters, and travelers; livestock, crops, and homes through magical, not physical, means. Malign spirits and hobgoblins at crossroads have been feared since ancient times, but modern dangers--car crashes, new diseases, even cell phones--have ensured an abiding faith in the magical protection that amulets afford us that is still widely evident today.

Book Description
This book provides a stunning look at the king who had an extraordinary impact on Roman-era Palestine. The author integrates historical, archaeological, and social analyses, writing with clarity and enthusiasm for his subject. The charts, maps and diagrams make this a very accessible tool for use in the classroom. Richardson portrays Herod in the complexity of his Judean and Roman frameworks.
Customer Reviews:
A fuller picture..........2003-06-05
In Peter Richardson's new book, 'Herod: King of the Jews and Friend of the Romans', we are given a much fuller account of the king who has graduated to being an archtype, almost mythical character who is the embodiment of evil.
'Herod the Great, as he is usually called, was much like Henry VIII, Catherine the Great, of Peter the Great: talented, vigourous, lusty, skillful, charismatic, attractive, decisive, influential--but a disaster in his personal life. Like them, Herod changed his nation's history.'
In a biographical study an author need not like the subject, but it helps if there is something to admire. Herod's personality is not attractive; had I been a contemporary I should not have wanted to spend much time with him.
This having been said, Richardson does find much of interest and intrigue in the character and the deeds of Herod the Great.
Herod was king of the Jews by virtue of his assistance to the Romans who were, during the 50-year period preceding the birth of Jesus and the beginning of the common/Christian era, consolidating power throughout much of the eastern Mediterranean lands. Herod married many times for increasing political and social purposes (a trend that would continue in the Herodian line -- John the Baptist was beheaded primarily for pointing out the marriage difficulties with a later Herod).
Herod the Great, founder of the line that would last and be an influence in Roman and Christian development for some two hundred years, died in 4 BCE, in Jericho, not long after the events that would have created the first Christian martyrs -- the slaying of the newborns of Bethlehem. The timing of his death in Jericho makes it appear to be divine justice, but independent verification of the Biblical story has never been found.
Richardson approaches the historical subject in a somewhat backwards fashion, examining the details of the death of Herod and the aftermath his will and the will of Rome in shaping his legacy to their ends. Using close sources such as Josephus, Richardson then proceeds to examine earlier, less well-documented periods in Herod's life, including his early service to Rome and his attempts at consolidation of power at different points. Shortly before key events that would bring him the favour of the Romans, Herod himself was on trial in Jerusalem for his possible usurpation of power that was not rightfully his -- this bravado, however, found favour with the Romans who followed his career with interest ever after.
Richardson also explores Herod's influence in the building up of Jerusalem into a great city as well as outside projects (major fortresses, palaces, religious and cultural buildings, commercial construction and infrastructure), as well as his support of and rivalry with various religious factions in Jerusalem and surrounding Judea. Herod's relationship with the Temple and priestly elite had ramifications throughout the religious fabric of Judaism of the time, which in various factions held differing beliefs about the appropriate constitution of the priestly officials and the practices these should perform. Herod incurred the disfavour of Sadducees, Pharisees, Esssenes, Herodians, Brigands, and others at different points in turn.
In the final chapters, Richardson turns to examine the role of Herod and his descendants in Christianity. He examines in detail the likelihood of Herod ordering the death of the newborns (or even knowing of the birth of a potential rival king). He examines also the role of Herod Antipas in the death of John and Jesus. Josephus confirms John the Baptist's death at the hands of Antipas, though recounts somewhat differently from gospel accounts. The gospels relate two independent traditions regarding the relationship of Jesus and Herod Antipas.
In all, this is a fascinating history that brings up great detail and context with which to read the gospel stories, the Roman history in the Middle East, and the Dead Sea Scrolls in a new context.
informative, scholarly and readable.......1999-01-08
The introduction and the first two chapters captured my attention, the book begins with Herod's death and comments on the internal (tragic) family matters. The author displays his impressive knowledge of archeology, ancient and biblical history to present to us a believable portrait of Herod.
A clearer picture of Herod.......1998-06-24
Herod has long suffered from the taint of infanticide and his associations with the birth of Christ, as portrayed in the Bible. Peter Richardson's book dispells the myths that have grown up around Herod, and make him a living, breath ing, interesting character in the period of Roman rule of Palestine, and the int ertestamental period of religious history. Herod the builder, Herod the supporte r of the Jewish diaspora and the Olympian games, Herod the master politician - e ach of these aspects of his character are brought vividly to life, and make clea r his very important position in the pre-Christian life of Palestine. This book provides important insights into the life of Herod, his skills as architect and administrator, and uncanny ability to read the political situation and shift all egiance in order to remain in power. An excellent book well worth the effort to read.

Excellent "How To" advice.......2000-04-22
Using only the material contained in this book I negotiated (without the expense of lawyer, accountant or ex-IRS official) a fifteen cents on the dollar settlement of a past due account with the IRS. Excellent book for those wanting to improve journalism.......1996-05-30
Although he doesn't give any real examples of how to apply public journalism, Buzz Merritt explains the concept clearly and in a way that makes you realize how wrong the media is today. This book should be included in every journalism professor's classroom. If future reporters could understand what is needed by them, then maybe the public would start trusting the media and not lumping them in with the same category as politicians

Book Description
This book is intended as a practical guide to scientific, legal, and technical issues concerning wetlands. As such, it is written in the most practical terms, with numerous helpful examples and case studies of how specific issues should best be addressed. The book is organized in a way that exposes the reader in logical succession to the full gamut of complex scientific, legal, and technical aspects of wetlands. This book recognizes that wetland science, law, and technology are interdependent disciplines. Most other works focus on one of these disciplines while perhaps providing some cursory treatment of related disciplines. This book attempts to meld several different perspectives on the subject of wetlands and to show the interrelationships between the various professions that deal with wetland issues. The book is organized as a guide through the various scientific, legal, and technical components of wetlands. Within each individual chapter, extensive cross-referencing is provided to help the reader link related aspects of the issue being discussed. Further, within the presentation of each separate chapter is a discussion of how the various scientific, legal, and technical aspects of the subject interrelate. Each chapter has been written by a known authority with specialized experience in the topic being presented.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent, insightful, enjoyable!!!.......2002-03-17
I really enjoyed it and hung onto every word. I would recommend it to anyone even if your not a country music fan. I also want to add my own opinion about Vince Gill and his music. My husband has been in extreme pain since October 13, 1993 when he received disabling injuries from work. Since that time he has found the only song that helps ease his pain is Pocket Full Of Gold. He will crank it up as loud as it will go, put the head phones on and without medication his pain melts away in about 30 minutes. What other artist can do that, he hasn't found any yet but Vince.
Vince's Story by Jo.......2001-11-29
Loved the book. Always enjoy reading about Vince and his career. He's come a long way and still have many more years left to soothe us with his beautiful voice and words. Love, Debbie Vince and Amy's Sister In Christ
The nicest man in Nashville is showcased perfectly..........1999-08-24
I thought this book was more of an extended review of all of his albums. It did not go into much detail about his personal life, although it did shed a little light on a few personal things (including his family). Overall, I would recommend this book, but only to those who do not know Vince Gill as the person. This book showcases his interests, especially in golf, and also his charity work. I think most die hard Vince fans are going to know alot about him already.
Very obvious she didn't interview subject.......1999-07-27
Very dis-jointed...mentions his wife all thru the book, very close couple, then suddenly they are divorced, no explanation, no time-frame. If you read her notes on the final pages, you find out she never interviewed the subject...that's obvious!
One of the kings of country.......1999-07-01
I have liked Vince Gill for a long time. But after reading this book, he whent from something more then just a cute guitar player. He became real. This book shows him as a person who whent from bottom to top and worked hard for it. It also shows his love for jenny. He is not just a star who forgets about everything but music and It shows. This book is a must read, For Vinny fans or just music fans.
