Book Description
One of the great medical stories of all time tells how one man worked under impossible conditions in a country under the merciless occupation of Nazism, to solve the problem of kidney failure and to change the course of human history.
Customer Reviews:
a brilliant 20th century inventor.......2004-03-25
In THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF LIFE Paul Heiney introduces us to a lively 90-something gentleman gleefully showing off something he invented -- a folding wooden bench. When Paul also learns that this spry fellow was the inventor of the first successful kidney dialysis machine back in the days before the (...)occupation of Holland, as well as a member of the American team which created the first artificial heart, he is moved to write the biography of Willem "Pim" Kolff.
Nowadays, kidney dialysis machines are so much a part of the medical profession, it is difficult to grasp what life had been like before their invention for people with kidney failure -- a sentence of a horrible, complicated death. As Paul Heiney writes in his Introduction about his first visit to the Kidney Unit in a British hospital: "Like the organs themselves, which lurk around the back of the body, inconspicuously keeping us alive, kidney units are often at the rear of hospitals, taken for granted and expected to get on with their routine task, basking in little glory." (Page 2)
RebeccasReads highly recommends THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF LIFE as a conversational biography, well-researched, rich in scientific details & the dramatic life & times of this venerable inventor.

Book Description
Named one of "The New Healers" on the cover of New York magazine, holistic physician Frank Lipman presents his seven-step program for cultivating habits that naturally strengthen the body's resilience.
Dr. Lipman's Seven Steps are:
Step 1: Take Responsibility for Your Health and Well-Being
Step 2: Remove Toxins and Decrease Your Total Load
Step 3: Recognize Your Unique Diet
Step 4: Replenish Nutrients and Balance Hormones
Step 5: Release Tension and Relieve Stress
Step 6: Revitalize with a Detox
Step 7: Reconnect to Yourself, Others, and Nature
In terms of health, most of us live at 50 percent of our capacity. Total Renewal takes us the rest of the way there.
Many people suffer from digestive disorders, low-grade toxicity, or fluctuating blood sugar levels. While not ballooning into full-fledged diseases, these conditions hamper our enjoyment of life and prefigure illnesses that loom in our future. Comprised of seven key steps, Dr. Frank Lipman's Total Renewalprogram reverses the unhealthy habits and poor functioning that we slowly develop and take for granted over the course of our lives, replacing them with new behaviors that leave us stronger, healthier, and more durable.
A prominent clinician on the leading edge of new concepts in complementary medicine, Dr. Lipman brings a vital, fresh voice to the literature of self-care and holistic health.

Total Renewal.......2007-06-08
This is a refreshingly open-minded source of health and medical information by a person's whose medical training began with the most traditional of medical approaches and expanded because of his receptiveness to his own intuitive sense and compassion. Tremendously valuable source of information and plan to follow.
Because we're all one and life goes on within you & without you.......2006-10-12
I must, at the outset, declare an interest in my review. I am a diabetes sufferer currently being treated with a regimen of drugs living in a country where the foods one buys from any supermarket are diametrically opposed to the maintenance of good health.
My concern here is with the book per se as opposed to the beneficial effects that I may have gained from following the guidance contained within. It should not, therefore, be taken as a testimony about the good works of the doctor's method.
Given these qualifications, the authors, Dr. Lipman and Stephanie Gunning have done an excellent job. Essentially the focus of the book is that western medicine has become too narrowly focussed on the treatment of the symptoms of diseases throught the widespread use of manufactured drugs. Dr. Lipman's background has led him to explore alternative methods of dealing with the diseases themselves and found that some of these methods have generated results which are hard to ignore.
The book chronicles a series of steps which people should follow in order to restore a sense of balance in our bodies and in our lives and thus enable us to be fit and well.
I would stress that Dr. Lipman is not advocating a wholescale rejection of western medicine. Instead he embraces a holistic paradigm which incorporates best practices from everywhere, utilising approaches from yoga and acupuncture as well as herbalism and other areas in concert with the traditional enlightenment medical science perspective. He advocates utilising our physicians as partners in our health which we need to take personal responsibility for and advising us to be assertive with our medical practitioners if we feel that our concerns are not being addressed.
There are some drawbacks however, to implementing some of the steps he advocates. Firstly, in my experience, it is not easy being a vegetarian in the United States even though he is not advocating a vegetarian approach. Similarly, for working parents in corporate America, there is often not the time nor the capability to prepare food in the right way. To those who say that one must make time, I would only say that those people have the means to sculpt their schedules the way that they want or they do not have to be like the other rats in this particular trap because their partners are bringing home enough money to allow them that luxury. The main issues are essentially twofold. The lesser of the two is the lack of provision of retail outlets where health foods and specialist vitamins can be purchased over the counter. For instance, although I only live thirty minutes away from the New York metropolis, the nearest health food store is a twenty-two mile, thirty minute car journey away. The more serious negative factor is the sheer volume of sugar and calories contained in foods of all descriptions which are available from supermarkets and food outlets all over the country. At a back to school night last week the principal was boasting of the replacement of colas in the drinks machines with healthy drinks, and healthy snacks instead of chips and candy, while across the street from the school the catchment are parents continue to chop for food at the local supermarket, totally oblivious to the damage these foods do to their health.
That aside, some of the practical problems of instituting such a program, the central point is one with which I do not dissent whatsoever. The key to a long and healthy life is clearly a sense of balance, a yin-yang from which many in the world have strayed. A recent study in England, reported in the Financial Times indicated that Britain is now the fat man of Europe indicated by the huge volume of people who are now considered morbidly obese. This problem has severe implications for life and health but also for healthcare costs directly and indirectly.
Total renewal is one guide to avaoiding such problems and I have no compunction about heartily recommending this book to all readers.
Total Renewal by Lipman.......2006-04-09
This is an excellent rendition for total self-improvement. The volume covers holistic exercises; such as, triangular stretches,
the wall pose, half dog pose and many more. The volume lists
strategies to reduce stress, maintain bone density, neutralize
blood sugar, decrease body fat percentage(BMR) and improve
aerobic calistenics. Regenerate the body with Glutamine, Gamma

fatty acids, flaxseed oil, Gamma-Linolenic Acid, Licorice Root
and Aloe Vera. Products which help leaky gut are Glutagenics,
and Perm A vite. Colostrum may be utilized to assist the immune
system in operating optimally. The author provides good protocols
for treating insulin resistance and metabolic syndromes.
He treats insulin resistance with a low-glycemic diet, limiting
intake of grains/cereals, exercise, non-starchy veggies and
Omega 3 , Omega 6 fatty acids and Glucobetics. A sluggish
thyroid may be treated with Thyrosol from Metagenics. Adrenal
exhaustion may be treated with Magnesium 300-500 mg.,
Zinc, Licorice Root, Siberian Ginseng and Ashwaganda (Indian
ginseng ). The authors deal with parasitic infections via
Grapefruit extract 300 millgm, Candibactin BR or Paraguard.
There is a resource section at the end of the book which shows
where to purchase the supernutrients. The book is an excellent
value for the price charged.

Fantastic Book.......2005-09-20
This is the best book on self-cure and healthy living, period.
It's easy to read and easy to follow. A friend of mine recommended this book to me a while ago and now I am recommending this book to anyone who believes in healthy living.
Dr. Frank Lipman provides detailed scenerio, and cures for 20th century health issues that he has helped his patients to overcome. I loved 'total renewal' book so much that I've been buying it for my friends and family members. The best part is that you don't need to 'join' website subscription if you are looking to cure your 'condition' like Kevin Trudeau's book on 'Natural Cure' does. In fact, I was quite shocked to see how Kevin Trudeau of 'Natural Cure' book never tells you about how to cure any illness in his book unless you become a member for his website which ranges from $10 to $500, which is just another way of making quick money.

Then, along with moist, perfectly cooked fresh fish, you can enjoy tempting versions of beefy pot-au-feu, rich, wild mushroom risotto, and more lean delights.
Customer Reviews:
It gives you the basics on cooking with an electric steamer.......2007-09-10
Stephanie Lyness' book explains how long you should cook every vegetable, fish, rice, meat and desserts. How much water to put in the container and when to add more. Whether to use salt before or after steaming. The ingredients for the recipes are extremely simple and healthy as well. Although it was published in 1996 and describes 4 electric steamers which I haven't seen where I live, one of them is very similar to the one I've just bought, so, no problem at all.The book also gives you tips that I have never found in any other book of the sort. The recipes serve 2 or 4. I recommend: Rice pilaf with peas and mushrooms,Red snapper with lemon and ginger and Lemon cheesecake. I didn't rate it 5 stars because I was disappointed not to find any pictures.
Best Cookbook and not just for steaming.......2001-09-03
Not only is this the best steaming cookbook I've read but it is the best cookbook I've read and most important, used....and I use one or another of the recipes from this book almost every dinner (for five years now). The cabbage with bacon sauce is as simple as it is tasty. The recipe for steamed carrots with cilantro is brilliant. I, formerly never known as much of a cook, now have a reputation as a gourmet with some of my friends who have tasted these recipes. This cookbook has made cooking so much fun!....and easy too! I cannot recommend this book eneogh.

An informative book on how to teach kids about races........1999-03-16
I am a college student and I chose this book to read for my Race and Society class. The examples of situations, that could have possibly been avoided, had the kids been taught properly, were a wake up call to me. I never realized how easily kids pick up on small subtle signals that parents send nor did I realize how aware children are of differences. The book was very informative in teaching me about how adults pass signs to kids, unknowingly, and informative on how to teach kids about the multicultural society that we are living in. I am not a parent yet, but I am going into education. I think this has well prepared me for both areas, when the time comes.

Book Description
The Author, a member of a secular, non-practicing, Jewish family, is 12 years old when the Germans occupy former Yugoslavia. His family hides in a small village and eventually joins Tito's guerrilla. At 14 years of age he is appointed a military courier, given an outdated Italian gun and sent alone to roam through mountains, forests, and small villages of Croatia. Eventually, by orders and against his wishes, in the middle of the night, he boards an airplane that takes him to Italy. He manages to return back to Croatia, and after the war studies hard, makes up lost high school classes, and graduates on time from the medical school. Just when things start looking good, his father breaks down under the Communist pressure and the author is forced to take refuge in Bosnia. There he learns a lot about medicine and the slow-paced, oblique Bosnian culture: Everything is different than it seems, asking questions is not polite, and seeking the truth is a waste of time. This is a story of how a youngster coped with Fascism and Communism and how extraordinary events can bring out the worst and the best in ordinary people. How the author to keep himself sane in the turmoil learned to see the funny side of things, to understand what makes people tick, to keep both eyes open, and when the going got really rough- to recite poetry. This is also a story of two brothers who, facing the same difficulties, became very different adults and of a son who unwittingly repeats his father's history.
Customer Reviews:
This book is creating more buzz among Croatians than any oth.......2005-01-03
Stunningly powerful, this tragedy and triumph of a non-practicing Jewish family portrays a happy and privileged family life dedicated to medicine and intellectual pursuits. All that changed in late May of 1941, when first German motorcycle with machine guns arrived practically in front of their home. Forced to run and hide, first from Germans and soon from Ustashe, Julius family with two sons barely survives attacks and joins resistance.
The parents, father a doctor and mother a nurse, worked day and night to save wounded communist partisans. Their youngest son Stevo, the author, at age 14 is appointed a military courier, given an outdated gun, and sent to roam alone through mountains, forests, and small rural villages of Croatia. Their older son, 18-year-old bravely defends the territory of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Severely wounded, caught by Germans, he talks his way out with fluent German.
"Neither Red Nor Dead" is an inside story, full of details and naming names among 481 pages, explaining why communism failed in Croatia and former Yugoslavia (now referred to as f-Y).
After the WWII, in 1953, the Julius family suffers a fatal blow, when dirty communist politics in Zagreb pins the father, a hard working and totally dedicated head of a hospital, against the wall with false accusations. Meddling into hospital administration in a typical communist style, Dr. Julius sees no way out and commits suicide.
The elder son dedicates his life to the communist ideals, but when he critizes Slobodan Milosevic (now a war criminal), he is considered a persona non grata in the country he loved so much. He dies from cancer.
The author, Stevo Julius, educated in Croatia is now internationally recognized as one of the leading scientists in the field of hypertension.

Alas Yugoslavia!.......2004-03-05
Neither Red nor Dead, an autobiographical memoir by Dr. Stevo Julius (Medvista, Ann Arbor, MI, www.medvistaa.com, Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com) is a great read! The author, who is an internationally known researcher in the field of hypertension, is now the Frederick G.L. Huetwell Professor of Hypertension at the University of Michigan. He describes his childhood growing up in a Yugoslavia that was occupied by the Nazis during World War II. He is separated from his family, becomes involved in the Partisan resistance, and then suffers excruciating hardship under the post-war Communist regime. Despite such difficulties, he survives and even thrives under these career-threatening circumstances.
His story is told in fine detail but with great charm, humor, and optimism. The descriptions of the Yugoslavian countryside, people, cities and politics are extremely informative and well written. The text maintained my intense interest throughout the 481 pages. Accompanying the text are maps showing specific areas of the country where the action takes place. One small concern here is that many of the towns are not depicted on the maps and so the most intricate details of his travels cannot be carefully examined.
While most of the account takes place in Yugoslavia, only the Epilogue deals with the authorýs leaving the country for Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan. Unlike the rest of the book, the facts leading up to this emigration are less detailed. The last chapter, The South Slavs, is an historical primer, which describes the background of the establishment of the Yugoslavian country after World War I. The author clearly displays the reasons for the internal strife, which has so damaged this territory in the past decade. I might suggest that the interested reader read this chapter first to better prepare for the unfolding of this fascinating memoir.
Dr. Julius maintains his wonderful humor, humility and sense of family and country throughout the book. There are many interesting literary details (stories and poems) included in the text. Most importantly, the writing is not at all medically oriented, so that readers of any background can enjoy the book. After reading it, besides offering it to my friends, I found that I would very much like to meet the author and shake his hand...
A Wonder-Filled Life.......2003-10-21
Reading this book has added greatly to my understanding of a significant set of social and political events in the Balkans. It is more important, though, in providing insight into the ways in which individuals cope and grow through being part of those events.
Prof. Julius is a wonderful scientist and clinician. This book addresses issues well beyond medicine and science.
For the American, Prof Julius' book provides a the history of the Balkan peoples and describes the maelstrom there during and after World War II. Often our histories overlook this region. Through his eyes, the very unique state of post-WWII Yugoslavia becomes plausible. Secondarily, more recent events in the area are more understandable.
However, it is the experience seen through the lives of his father, mother, and brother that capture the imagination in a unique manner. The struggle of the individual within large social and political movements is captivating. Late at night, when I wake from sleep, I often wonder about one or more of young Stevo's experiences described in the book. It is a life well-lived and aspects of his life will always remain with me.
More Than the Story of One Man.......2003-10-10
As a reader with only a vague awareness, understanding, or even interest in Yugoslavia and the history of the south Slavs, Julius' book not only opened my eyes to that part of the world but also enhanced my strong feelings of empathy for persons ensnared in the horrors and anomalies of war. His reminiscences of how he handled his ordeal are lively, pointed, and get to the heart of how people react in times of great upheaval. In spite of the serious character of this autobiography, the author was able to see the humorous side of the human condition. Maps and a brief history primer help explain the geography and the times. Not only for history buffs, this book gives all readers a better perception of events in a part of the world that has moved from relative obscurity to major importance in present times.
The Making of a Superstar: From Horror to Life-saver.......2003-09-23
Have you ever wondered what motivates those who make great contributions to society? Neither Red Nor Dead is the mesmerizing autobiographical account of a young teen-ager caught up in the horror of the Nazi invasion of Yugoslavia during World War II. Blessed with intelligence, incredible insight, perhaps an overabundance of courage and much luck, the author describes in great detail the activities of Yugoslavian partisans and a young boy, largely separated from his family during this horrible time. After the end of World War II the author and his family attempted to reconstruct some semblance of a normal life during the equally terrifying Communist takeover. We follow the trauma of life during the author's education in University and Medical School with amazement, laughter and sadness. It is difficult to put this captivating and fast-moving account down. What makes the epic so much more incredible is the recognition that despite the difficulties and personal loss sustained during this period, the author developed a keen sense of humor and used his brilliance and insight to make many major contributions to the benefit of mankind. This is the personal story of one of the great hypertension (high blood pressure) researchers of our age to whom hundreds, even thousands of people are indebted for his services as a physician, teacher, researcher and friend.
