This volume continues the best and most detailed study of the Revolutionary War in the South. In more than 1,000 documents, it traces the British evacuation of Georgia as well as General Nathanael Greene's ongoing efforts to force a British withdrawal from South Carolina.

Despite evidence that the British were planning to pull out of the lower South, Greene twice turned down British proposals for an end to hostilities in the region, and the fighting and killing continued. Mistrusting his enemy's motives, Greene reasoned that only a militarily strong and politically unified America could convince Britain to abandon entirely its campaign to subdue the new nation. Greene's efforts to bolster his forces were thwarted, however, by an increasing war-weariness among the American people, a lack of supplies, and an outbreak of malaria. Despite these problems, Greene and his army enjoyed some success with the British withdrawal from Savannah and a decrease in the threat posed by Indians on the southern frontier.

Great for Gentle Yoga.......2007-01-11

I am a yoga instructor but am used of teaching moderate/vigourous vinyasa flow. I wanted some further input into designing yoga classes - very gentle yoga classes as I have a mother with a stiff neck and a mother in law with a compression fracture of her spine...both of which require PT. In any case, I found this book very helpful, it provides chair modifications for many postures and brings awareness to simple asanas/stretches that can be extremely beneficial. It is not a flashy book and the pictures are dated - think old people in 70s sweat suits - but if you can get over that the information is, for the most part, very helpful.

As a Yoga teacher I frequently review yoga books for ideas and new information. I am very excited about Easy Does It Yoga! Could it be that finally Yoga has come of age? This book might just persuade the Yoga doubters to view Yoga as an acceptable exercise that truly will benefit the mind, body and spirit in the present and on into aging. The author, Alice Christensen, has written a comprehensive and compassionate book on Yoga and its tremendous health benefits for the older person, and indeed, anyone physically challenged by bad health, addictions and inertia. The various disciplines of yoga are discussed and benefits illustrated by case examples. The exercises are well detailed in words and pictures. Nutrition is covered in a reader friendly style that lists detailed menus of wholesome foods. Easy Does It Yoga should be required reading for any business involved in the health care needs of today's older population.

Not quite what I expected.......2005-10-08

Instead of original recipes, many of Ms. Broihier's call for using ready made mixes, ready made cookies and ready made chocolate bars...Not my idea of a cookbook... what do I need the cookbook for? I could just bake the cake mix, eat the cookies and enjoy the chocolate as is.... the rest are pretty common.... take some heavy cream and whip it with some flavoring or other.....when she does offer some original recipes, many include non low carb items like real flour etc. Even small amounts, are not part of my ingredients any more....

I purchased both low carbs cookbooks by Kitty Broihier. I am a vegetarian but still cook meat for my family, I get very bored with the same old stuff so these cookbooks have really helped me, I made the herbed top round roast and my husband and mother in law loved it. I also discovered the salads and veggie dishes in the back, I made the corn beef hash using a deli meat substitute- it was very tasty and I didn't feel like I missed the potatoes at all. As for the low carb dessert cook book I made 3 desserts for Easter (there were 21 people at my home)- pumpkin pudding, ice cream sandwich cookies, and the black forest cupcakes- trust me I am no dessert cook but these recipes were easy and yummy, I was completed in preparing and cleaning up ect... w/in @ 45 minutes, everyone tried them and loved them, there were no leftovers.

Disappointing Shortcuts.......2005-05-01

I am a serious baker, and was excited about the idea of a dessert book that would allow me to make guilt-free sugar-free cakes and pies. Guilt-free, yes, but that's about it. I don't mean to sound like a snob, but I'm not interested in cake recipes that call for Sweet-n-Low brand cake MIX as their main ingredient. I thought this was supposed to be a cookbook? I can get those kinds of recipes off the side of a box.

Fine if you're interested in quick and easy. Not very satisfying if you want to make from-scratch desserts with real ingredients. I'm afraid I'll be sending this back.

I received this book as a early Christmas gift and WOW is it fantastic. Classic desserts and creative desserts abound in this cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow and the nutritional information is printed with each recipe. Even a novice like me can make amazing desserts. There is a section in the middle with great photographs to get you inspired. I made the truffles for the office holiday party - they got rave reviews. The low-carbers of the office were impressed. If you are missing dessert - this is the book for you. If you enjoy making and eating dessert - you cannot go wrong with this book!

A book that reveals a great deal, but leaves a lot of questions........2007-07-03

What do you call the part of the blade that rests on the backspring...that is the kick. Lots of good information on taking knives apart and putting them back together, but you will find yourself asking questions that aren't answered. On the flip side, there isn't anything better out there.

The Incomplete Book of Pocketknife Repair.......2007-03-22

A newcomer to pocketknife repair, this books gives me a start, but doesn't take me very far. It's a small and slim book to begin with (130 pages) but take away the appendix-like materials that are peripheral to repair (such as knife maintenance, sharpening, a section on angles for drill bit points (!), several reproduced Starrett reference tables, types of handle and blade patterns, and other peripheral information you can get from other sources) and the book's down to around 100 pages. Take away the section on the tools used for repair (which is definitely helpful, but there's a full page illustration of what a drill press looks like, another full page illustration of what a bandsaw looks like--you see where I'm going with this) and you're down to around 75 pages. Those remaining 75 pages are well-illustrated with big photos, but there isn't a whole lot of text here. What text does exist, is very good and informative! There's a 28-page sequence showing the repair of an old Case congress slipjoint, which is the sort of thing I purchased the book for, but new blades suddenly appear from nowhere in one of the sequence photos, and no explanation is given where they came from, how they were made, or how they were fitted to the knife. So after I've read the book in about 30 minutes, I find myself wishing the author simply spent more time talking to me about this subject and showing me techniques. He's obviously an experienced pro; just a little stingy with information. On the other hand, it's certainly a decent start, and I'm unaware of any other books out there on this subject, so if you're wanting to learn knife repair from a book, this appears to be one of your few options. I would recommend you get the book because the information that's here is good. Just don't expect the COMPLETE book of pocketknife repair!

this book should've been called the incomplete book of pocketknife repair. dont buy this book thinking it will walk you through step by step. bad drawings, bad photos, much omitted detail. this guy should've hired a writer to co-author.

From 1926 until her death in 1954, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo created striking, often shocking, images that reflected her turbulent life. One of four daughters born to a Hungarian-Jewish father and a mother of Spanish and Mexican Indian descent, in the Mexico City suburb of Coyoacn, Kahlo did not originally plan to become an artist. During her convalescence from a bus accident in her late teens, Kahlo began to paint with oils. Her pictures, mostly self-portraits and still-lifes, were deliberately naive, filled with the bright colors and flattened forms of the Mexican folk art she loved. At 21, Kahlo fell in love with the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera; their stormy, passionate relationship survived infidelities, the pressures of Rivera's career, a divorce and remarriage, and Kahlo's poor health. The couple traveled to the United States and France, where Kahlo met luminaries from the worlds of art and politics. She had her first solo exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York City in 1938 and enjoyed considerable success during the 40s, but her reputation soared posthumously, beginning in the 80s with the publication of numerous books about her work by feminist art historians and others. In the last two decades an explosion of Kahlo-inspired films, plays, calendars, and jewelry has transformed the artist into a veritable cult figure. Portraits of an Icon is not another book featuring Kahlo's beloved, tortured self-portraits. Rather, it offers another kind of portrait of the artist, a means of seeing her through the eyes of those who surrounded her: modern masters of the camera such as Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, and Martin Munkacsi; leading photojournalists such as Giselle Freund, Bernard Silberstein, and Fritz Henle; and Kahlo's relatives, lovers, and friends, among them Guillermo Kahlo, Nicolas Muray, and Lola Alvarez Bravo. The images span Kahlo's life, beginning with a photograph of a self-possessed chubby four-year-old, her fists full of wilting roses, and ending with the image of an emaciated, wasted figure laying on her deathbed, dressed in pre-Columbian finery. They follow the artist's trajectory from precocious child to famous artist, bringing into focus the painter, the paintings, the patient, the wife, the daughter, the lover, the friend. They permit a look into her bedroom, a seat at her table, a visit to her hospital room, a stroll through her garden, a view into her collections, and some play with her pets. While many of these images provide us with a unique opportunity to glimpse the woman behind the facade, others, though less revealing, are equally fascinating in allowing us to view one of the most intriguing of the artist's creations--the construction of a self-image as carefully crafted and conceived as any of her works of art.

Addictive reading........2005-05-08

Patrick Seale's "Abu Nidal: A Gun For Hire" is addictive and non-stop reading. A book tracing the inner working and operations of Abu Nidal's terrorist organization. Abu Nidal started a resistance group which splintered from the mainstream palestinian opinion in the 70's. Abu Nidal's would transform his group from an extreme palestinian group into a work-for-hire organization that would carry out terrorist attacks against the enemies of his sponsor of the day. Most importantly Abu Nidal broke early on with the PLO and did everything he could to destroy the moderate palestinian voices.

The book recreates Abu Nidal's operations, its mode of operation and some missions it carried out by interviewing collaborators, defectors and opponents. The book starts by tracing the steps of a new recruit in the group, and then exploring the claim from a senior PLO officer: that either Abu Nidal's Organization was infiltrated by the Mossad or Abu Nidal himself was working for the Mossad. The exploration of this claim takes the rest of the book as Patrick Seale reconstructs the various terrorist strikes carried out by Abu Nidal. In this book, Lebanon appears only as a backdrop to the mainline story.

In any case, Abu Nidal's strikes consistently undermined the efforts of the PLO and the palestinian cause which he claimed to be assisting. Attacks would set back any attempts from the PLO to become a political force to represent the interests of the Palestinians in the exile and on the occupied territories.

It was Abu Nidal's group who carried out the attempt to assassinate the Israeli ambassador in London in 1982. This give Israel the excuse to start its long-planned invasion of Lebanon in 1982 by claiming that the the cease fire had been broken by the PLO.

In addition to the detective work, the interviews and the puzzle that the book tries to assemble there are various bits of insight on the events of the 80's and early 90's on the Middle East which will help understand the mood in the region.

Abu Nidal's mysterious death appropos.......2002-11-26

Abu Nidal purportedly committed suicide in Baghdad a few months ago by shooting himself in the head a few times. As English author Patrick Seale probably would agree, Nidal's mysterious death was appropos of a murky life given to terrorism for profit from whatever financial source was available.

Abu Nidal: A Gun for Hire has many of the characteristics American readers find so grating about British journalism. Among these are the author's penchant for injecting himself into the story and then indulging in a baseless conspiracy theory which requires the writer to make every fact fit his premise (in this case, a far-fetched theory that Nidal worked for the Mossad). All that said, this book probably is more relevant in the aftermath of September 11th than it was when published a decade ago. The author gives textured explanations for the root causes of terrorism, and provides the mechanics of how these horrific crimes actually are implemented.

Seale also gives us a look into the sad history of Abu Nidal and other Palestinians who suffered at the hands of Israeli settlers. He follows Nidal as he evolves from a young expatriate into the recipient of patronage from the likes of Saddam Hussein, and finally into a quasi-businessman who becomes a freelance killer for profit. As an interesting aside, Nidal had been expelled from Iraq at the time this book was written. The terrorist Seale portrays is essentially a cowardly, bigoted man who loves money and whiskey more than radical politics and the Palestinian cause. In fact, as his career gains momentum Nidal murders far more Palestinians than he does Israelis and other Westerners. To underscore his actual motives, in one grimly amusing vignette Nidal has an in-law slain to settle a business dispute.

Abu Nidal: A Gun for Hire was published shortly before serial killers, terrorists and other criminals became media darlings and topics of the talk show circuit. It is interesting to read a relatively recent book that required the author to gather actual facts rather than rely on the self-serving declarations of his subject matter. Even with all its flaws, Seale's book is a valuable tool to understanding terrorism.

Very Good if not a Bit Dated.......2002-04-16

The book is a very interesting account of this terrorist's career. It covers many of the different organizations he is part of or works with and the countries that use him or support him. The book also tried to give the reader a better understanding of the Israeli / Palestinians war and why it effects Nidal. I found the most interesting part was just the detailed accounts of what he has been involved in; this is a very sick person that is out for as much death and destruction as possible. The book is well written and detailed. The author keeps the books going in a straight timeline. I would say that it could use an update on what he has been up to the last ten years. If you are interested in terrorism, and right now who is not, then you should pick up a copy of this book.

Detailed Account of a Deadly Organization.......1999-06-15

Seale, a noted expert on Middle East affairs, uses his expertise to create an engaging story about Abu Nidal and his terrorist organization. Not only does the book provide a detailed history of Abu Nidal, but it explains the whole of the Palestinian problem in relation to Abu Nidal and his efforts. With close ties to influential sources Seale is able to add a thread of authenticity to the tale. In some parts of the book, Seale acts out the role of a private detective, piecing together clues about Abu Nidal and his possible ties to Mossad. However, the book is entertaining and educational, a great addition to one's library.

An ideal expose of a terrorist organization.......1997-10-02

The value of this book is not just the portrait it paints of its subject, Abu Nidal. His entire oranization is clearly and thoroughly documented: its structure, incidents (with dates), movements, and interworkings. Through his penetration into the organization and subsequent writing, Patrick Seale has written this remarkably detailed intelligence report. Anyone with any interest in international terrorism should go out of their way to procure a copy of this book.
