1929. John Ruskin, the greatest Victorian bar Victoria, was an artist, scientist, poet, environmentalist, philosopher, and, importantly here, the preeminent art critic of his time. He provided the impetus that gained respectability for the Pre-Raphaelites. Counted amongst the great letter writers, this is a selection of his correspondence addressed to Dr. and Mrs. Chambers; Samuel Laurence, the artist; members of the Scott family including Reverend A.J. Scott and Miss Susan Scott; and others. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

A nice mix of types of cuisine, mainly healthy recipes, not boring or always consisting of cans of Campbells soup to give flavor. We liked the pasta and bean soup recipe. Also liked the mix of slow-cooker, make ahead and meals in less than 30 minutes.

Making dinner during the week has been my wife's biggest complaint for years. These meals don't take long to make plus our kids liked them. Giving her this cookbook, one of those robotic vaccuums and the book Prayers for the Working Mom have turned me into my wife's new best friend!

The second half shows readers how to inlay decorative elements into wood. Taylor is first-rate in making sense of a some-what unforgiving technique. Excellent.”—Library Journal

                    Book Description

This book describes how to design and produce decorative wood inlay bandings. It provides information often hard to find in a single location. Included are subjects such as: how to purchase and protect wood, how to design and create decorative inlay bandings, how to make a combination vertical and horizontal press. It touches on dying wood and wood veneers, and more.

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The best book available on the subject?.......2001-06-13

This book is a thoroughly amateurish effort. The layout is bad, the typography is ridiculously bad, and the illustrations are not clear or particularly helpful. Much of the book is extraneous to the subject, a folksy writing blend of which I am not particularly fond. The author does seem sincere in trying to be helpful.

Nonetheless, this book is, to my knowledge, the only dedicated overview of how to make your own banding. Moreover, it does this well. Total beginners may find the lack of information in some areas to be confusing, but my guess would be that anyone ready to make their own banding probably has enough woodworking experience to puzzle it all out.

Creating Beautiful Boxes with Inlay Techniques -- by Doug Stowe is a beautiful book that covers some of the same ground, but the emphasis on Stowe's book is more on the box than the banding.

Sometimes you can't buy the best book on a subject. You have to settle for buying the only book on the subject. I'm giving it an extra star just for existing.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent concepts for homemade Inlays; NOT for a Novice........2000-07-23

Mr. Loeffler initially expands on the terminology and concepts of wood and the woodworker's craft. It is very brief and introductory. The meat of the text is in Chpt 3 and 4, and sections of the remaining chapters. Chpts 3 & 4 provide the basic concepts to designing an infinite variety of inlay bandings such as multi-stage inlays, ribbon designs, one unqiue inlay he calls the "Duck" design. He covers the way the inlay core is assembled and built, the binding veneers used to bind the cores together, as well as how to manipulate the cores, binding veneers in multiple stages and sawing/cutting techniques to prouce the more elaborate and beautiful multi-stage designs. In addition, certain tidbits of valuable information is sprinkled throughout the text on issues one must be aware of when designing and constructing an inlay banding.

However - and this is a big however! - Mr. Loeffler does not expand into how one would (or could) exactly go about glueing the bandings, such as the types of glues to be considered, dry times, hold and set times, etc. He does not cover exactly how one would go about cutting the inlay banding from a core panel into the appropriate thicknesses using, for instance, a band saw, the tool he recommends - there is absolutely NO helpful or insightful informaiton on setting up your bandsaw, or other tool, properly cutting the panels to even thicknesses, or what blades and guide settings for your bandsaw. Lastly, no exact process is given as to how one would go about sanding the inaly bandings to even thicknesses and/or to an acceptable surface finish. As a woodworker, one must rely on your knowledge and experince with the bandsaw, power sander, and other shop tools in order to succesfully make inlays using this book.

Thus, although I highly recommend this book in order to understand how intricate inlay bandings can be designed and constructed in your own shop, I would highly recommend a good book on bandsaws (or accurately cutting veneers on bandsaws), and sanding techniques. Beautiful inlay banding designs can definitely be had using the concepts shared in Mr. Loeffler's book, but his book in no way guarantees that you will be successful at creating the finished product.

First impression: A cheap, homemade set of thoughts. (presentation/cover could be better) color pictures of the designs would have been better.

Subsequent impression(s): A well thought out and informative method book.

Although the book is in black and white only, the diagrams and inlay patterns can be clearly followed and understood. It takes you from the basics of wood selection, terminology and inlay design and building through to the tools needed. This is a very basic book that every novice could use in a concise and understandable way to get started in inlay design. Absolutely no prior knowledge is needed or assumed. This is only to start, but the author make it look so simple that maybe no other book would be needed.

In reading this book, you understand what the values of African-Amrericans are. Also, you get a better idea as to how we can restore ourselves as a people. The only way that this is possible is through the use of villages values which are discussed in this book. I recommend anyone this book who likes African-American literature with some truth to it.

                            Book Description

Charles Ruckstuhl is the stepson of the famous horse artist and author, C.W.Anderson. He has known "Andy" as his family called him, since 1927 when he first met Charles' mother. Charles therefore knows Andy well enough to portray not only his genius as an artist, but also as a poet, a lover of music, and an expert horseman. This book is unusual in that it is not only a biography, but also a book not only of Andy's poetry, but also a compendium of his never-published pen-and-ink and pencil drawings, especially of trees that he loved for their natural geometry and design rhythm. This book also delightfully shows his sense of humor back in the 1926-1934 era when his cartoons were published in the New Yorker whose staff has generously provided Mr. Ruckstuhl with copies of his early work for them. Additionally, the book contains a series of never-published ditties or doggerels superimposed on typical Anderson cartoonism. The content is typical of the art deco era and carries with it naughty connotations of a society not yet immersed in problematical behavior. In contrast to this lighter side of life, the chapter containing his poetry and sketches of trees and Long Island expanses is indeed emotional. These 47 short verses were writtem for Mr. Ruckstuhl's mother each morning and were put on her breakfast tray daily during her remainng weeks. The short poems, in a most heart rending way, combine Andy's intense love for his wife, Madeleine, and simultaneously portray the dying flora of the past summer. The ebb of nature and failing human life combine profoundly in the melancholy domain of his pen.

In the voluminous Wagner bibliography, Thomas May's book occupies a special place. Concise but remarkably information-packed and accompanied by two CDs of excerpts, it is addressed to those who seek a deeper understanding of Wagner's operas. The controversies--artistic, human and moral--generated by Wagner's innovative ideas and reprehensible behavior frequently obscure the greatness of his achievements. May performs an extraordinary feat: although unflinchingly aware of Wagner's arrogance, self-aggrandizement, duplicity, faithlessness, hedonism, greed, political opportunism, chauvinism, and anti-Semitism, he communicates boundless admiration for the composer and passionate love for his works. Suggesting that the very schism between Wagner's flawed character and idealistic aspirations inspired "monumentally stirring meditations on the contradictory range of human experience," he correlates and reconciles his "monstrous ego" with his sublime genius. The evolution of Wagner's operas, from his early and incomplete attempts to the late, often extensively revised masterpieces, culminated in a lofty artistic vision: the "total artwork" which, combining all the arts, would result in heightened experience and spiritual elevation. Wagner wrote his own texts, considering poetry and music inseparable and himself equally master of both, an assessment not universally shared. May takes the librettos very seriously, following them from their historical or mythological origin to their final form with formidable but unobtrusive erudition. Among his references are the Buddha, Aristotle, Shakespeare, Thomas Mann, and T.S. Eliot, and he must have read everything about Wagner as well as Wagner's own often repellent autobiographical, theoretical, and political writings (which make one wish he had written nothing but music). May's musical analyses are equally riveting and absorbing. He traces the operas' ever-increasing depth, breadth, and grandeur, the growing importance and masterful use of the unifying leitmotif and the "Wagnerian" orchestra, and the often hidden strands that connect them despite their individual uniqueness. Opera lovers spurred by May's book to hear these works performed could not wish for a more knowledgeable, illuminating, and inspiring guide. --Edith Eisler

This guide aims to unlock the world of Richard Wagner and his works, his monumental achievements, and, ultimately, the great emotional power inherent in his art. Decoding Wagner presents a straightforward, fresh overview of what Wagner attempted to achieve with his "artwork of the future." Two accompanying full-length CDs illustrate and trace his growth as a composer.

I used to be an opera singer and I have to say this is a fabulous book for any fan of Wagner. Tom May has done a terrific job of making this difficult material accessible, and the accompanying CDs help considerably. Even if you feel you have read everything there is to read about the maestro, you will find this book absorbing and very illuminating. Plus you'll probably want to buy a new recording of Tristan und Isolde as well [maybe the most beautiful music ever written, in my humble opinion]. I think Amazon may sell that too. LOL

5 out of 5 stars Very solid overview of Wagner's operas - 2 Good Music CDs .......2005-01-24

I found this to be an excellent overview of Wagner and his operas in a book of only 200 pages or so. This book is for someone who is fairly familiar with the plots of Wagner's operas -- no plot summaries are presented -- and gives a good sense of how Wagner developed as both a composer and dramatist. The book is written mostly around the ten major operas wrote -- a chapter for each with an extra chapter to introduce the Ring. Although the book is relatively short, the reader learns a lot about Wagner's sources, his use of these sources, and key features of the individual operas. A portion of the discussion of the operas is tied to the CDs - one for the Ring and the other for the non-Ring operas. The CDs are primarily "greatest hits" - from the operas, with text making reference to different points on the CD in terms of timing.

This book is probably not the first book you read on Wagner -- I would recommend "Wagner Without Fear" by William Berger as an introduction to Wagner and his work. For other readers, this book really provides quite a bit of diverse information in a small space. The book is well-written and meets the needs of many readers in that it written around individual operas. A reader can go right to the opera of interest, but I think may will also want to read through the entire book to better understand the context of individual operas and their place in Wagner's development.

The book has a good bibliography (though it would have been nice to have some annotation).

The book is a good value as is, but with the 2 CDs (primarily BMG recordings), it becomes an excellent value. Any reader interested in Wagner should consider owning this book. 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Accessible, lively and well-written.......2005-01-19

This is a terrific read: entertaining and briskly paced. May considers historical and social factors in Wagner's work without bogging down the reader with theory or dull historicism. In fact, this work brings me a greater appreciation for Wagner than I thought possible (I'm not, my apologies, an opera fan). I would recommend it to the casual theater goer, the fine arts critic, opera fans, and anyone interested in music or 19th century theater.

                              Book Description

Richard Wagner continues to be the most controversial artist in history, a perpetually troubling figure in our cultural consciousness. The unceasing debate over his works and their impact--for and against--is one reason why there has been no genuinely comprehensive modern account of his musical dramas until now. Dieter Borchmeyer's book is the first to present an overall picture of these musical dramas from the standpoint of literary and theatrical history. It extends from the composer's early works--still largely ignored--to the Ring Cycle and Parsifal, and includes Wagner's unfinished works and operas he never set to music. Through lively prose, we come to see Wagner as a librettist--and as a man of letters--rather than primarily as musical composer.

Borchmeyer uncovers a vast field of cultural and historical cross-references in Wagner's works. In the first part of the book, he sets out in search of the various archetypal scenes, opening up the composer's dramatic workshop to the reader. He covers all of Wagner's operas, from early juvenilia to the canonical later works.

The second part examines Wagner in relation to political figures including King Ludwig II and Bismarck, and, importantly, in light of critical reactions by literary giants--Thomas Mann, whom Borchmeyer calls "a guiding light in this exploration of the fields that Wagner tilled," and Nietzsche, whose appeal to "philology" is a key source of inspiration in attempts to grapple with Wagner's works.

For more than twenty years, Borchmeyer has placed his scholarship at the service of the famed Bayreuth Festival. With this volume, he gives us a summation of decades of engagement with the phenomenon of Wagner and, at the same time, the result of an abiding critical passion for his works.

3 out of 5 stars Uneven but worthwhile.......2006-07-08

Dieter Borchmeyer, a professor at Heidelberg, is prodigiously well read. How can the man have a life outside of books? (But his website shows that he does.) For each of the fourteen chapters of this book, Borchmeyer settles on a theme, sometimes a tangential one, but a theme. Whether it's a literary source that we've overlooked or the antithetical attitudes of Wagner and Ludwig on religion vs. art, the subject at hand is fairly tight. This is not a book, then, with a clear thesis, and it suffers a bit from that. Moreover it is uneven: to this reader some of the subjects Borchmeyer chooses simply lack much interest. On the other hand, his chapter on the Ring is one of the most insightful I've ever read. So here's what I'd suggest: by all means read it, but with some judicious skimming.
