This book is a wonderful family read. The history on Japan is very interesting. I learned a lot about WWII that I did not know. It left me with a deep feeling of gratitude for the men who are fighting and have fought to protect our freedom. It also made me reflect on what I am doing with my life that is worthwhile. Definately worth your time. Jenny Robbins

    Book Description

Memoirs of a Poor City Boy: From Penniless Youth to Chemist and Doctor is the fascinating life story of George Francis Kamen. Amidst a background of poverty, George obtained a coveted college education and medical training. Always the pragmatist, George earned a degree in chemistry to back up his medical education. He went on to conduct groundbreaking research in the treatment of multiple sclerosis and other neurological diseases with hydrocortisone injections and a salt-free, low-fat diet: The Kamen Diet.

The author practiced medicine at a time when medical research sometimes was conducted with only a verbal agreement between patients and doctors. His treatments with hydrocortisone injections and The Kamen Diet also were found to be beneficial in patients with diabetes and cirrhosis of the liver.

Published articles on Dr. Kamen¡¯s research with acrolein ranged from the effects of shock associated with burns (1943) to Mengo-Semliki virus immunity (196), some of the earliest research on retroviruses. Dr. Kamen is listed in Leaders in American Science (1960) for his work on Multiple Sclerosis.

Now retired and living in Sarasota, Florida, Dr. Kamen hopes that by publishing his memoirs, readers might find the courage and determination to realize their own dreams against any odds.

Rosalynn Carter's "Helping Someone with Mental Illness" is a powerful tool that anyone--families, social workers, doctors, consumers--can put to good use. There are other such books on the shelf, such as Surviving Schizophrenia: A Family Manual, but Carter's is by far the best. She has managed to weave the deeply moving stories of many individuals into a cleanly organized discussion of every salient issue: diagnosis, treatment, scientific research, stigma, advocacy. Her descriptions of the different mental illnesses--schizophrenia, depression, manic-depression or bipolar illness, and the anxiety disorders--are particularly cogent, and her 20-page list of references is alone worth the price of the book.

Carter never sugarcoats a hard truth or omits a painful statistic, but somehow her voice--warmly personal but also respectfully reserved--comes through so strongly that it is almost as if she is in the room with the reader. Coauthor Susan K. Golant, whom Carter thanks for her organizational skills--among other things--has done her work in a particularly unobtrusive way. This is much more than a book; it is a companion.

Reading Carter on mental illness is like reading Dr. Spock on child care. Having advocated for the mentally ill for most of her adult life, she is an acknowledged expert by now, and she writes with the authority one might expect. But her special status as a mother also subtly informs her text. Discussing caregiver burnout, she writes, "Having dinner at 6:00 p.m. each evening, going to church every Sunday, or watching a favorite TV show every day are all simple ways of maintaining a sense of control. Routines can create structure and a feeling of safety." Readers will be particularly grateful for Carter's constant, explicit suggestions for beating the stigma that often surrounds mental illness. Perhaps no book can be perfect--Carter writes little about post- traumatic stress disorder, a common affliction--but Helping Someone with Mental Illness comes very, very close. --Peggy Moorman

    Book Description

The first thing you need to know is that life isn't over. "The good news," writes Mrs. Carter in Helping Someone with Mental Illness, "is that with proper diagnosis and treatment, the overwhelming majority of people with mental illness can now lead productive lives." Based on Mrs. Carter's twenty-five years of advocacy and the latest data from the Rosalynn Carter Symposia for Mental Illness, her book offers step-by-step information on what to do after the diagnosis: seeking the best treatment; evaluating health-care providers; managing workplace, financial, and legal matters.

Mrs. Carter addresses the latest breakthroughs in understanding, research, and treatment of schizophrenia, depression, manic depression, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other mental disorders. She also discusses the emotional and psychological issues in caregiving for people with mental illness and offers concrete suggestions to help erase the prejudice and discrimination based on misinformation about mental illness. Her book is also a rich clearinghouse that guides readers to hundreds of specialized resources, including organizations, hot lines, newsletters, videos, books, websites, and more.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Educational.......2001-10-27

This was one book I did not hesitate to buy as I know so many people with the mental illnesses.

I must applaud Rosalyn Carter one of the former First Ladies for her help in understanding Mental Illness and for trying her utmost not to see it as a stigma in this twenty first century......but for us to learn that getting help is the priority here.

From Depression to Panic attacks......Paranoia to Schizophrenia, caregiving with lots of love and understanding can go a long way. Buy this book to assist you if not now, sometime in the Autumn-time when friends and love ones will be taken under that dark umbrella. The treatments for each mental illness is remarkable.Thank you Roslyn Carter with help from Susan K. Golnat for a book that's going to help millions.
    Congratulations.

5 out of 5 stars A caring and compassionate work.......1999-05-12

The former First Lady's book is a very compassionate effort which can help a person who has to deal with mental illness for the first time no matter what the setting. Mrs. Carter gives a good over-view of the "whole picture" concerning all mental illness with enough detail to give the reader a good foundation in the subject. I think the really profound thing that I read in every line of the book was the real sincerity that Mrs. Carter has for her work. She really is serious about changing the way some in society look at individuals with mental illesses. I applaud her for her work and her book.

5 out of 5 stars facing the difficult challenge.......1999-05-07

An excellent resource for family members and friends who wish to help a person with mental illness. I especially appreciated the book's emphasis on biological *and* social risk factors for various forms of mental illness.

The section on building resiliancy in children at risk for mental illness is reason alone to purchase this book. It is a wise, compassionate, humane treatus on a very important topic.

5 out of 5 stars A first book for the reader uninformed about mental illness........1998-12-08

Rosalynn Carter's new book evokes compassion from the reader as she unfolds her personal experience of becoming aware of persons with mental illness. This affliction has many facets and is painful for the family as well as the patient. Carter leads the reader through various types of mental illness, noting symptoms. The reader may use the book as a reference and not a 'read for pleasure' book.

Carter writes simply and without exaggerating, so she is easy to read and to understand. With the resources listed in index "D", she equips the uninformed reader to bring understanding in his interaction with his/her co-workers and friends. This is especially important as mentally ill patients need support of those around them. They also need the same financial help that patients with surgical and medical problems receive.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Rosalynn Knows Everything About Mental Illness.......1998-10-19

Rosalynn Carter's book tells it just the way it is and how you can treat the mental illnesses' the way they should be. Reading her book you cannot miss having the right treatment. I myself also believe a lot of the treatment comes from support of the family and guidance that is a must ,a mentally ill person whom does not have that benefit will become a difficult road to travel.

Mrs. Carter started her journey many years ago and never tired of it, she is a true believer that if you want to get well you can never stop searching for the answer of which she never did.

Understanding the illness is the first battle. When I seen Rosalynn on the Larry King Live Show and she had introduced her new book, just by listening to her speak I knew she gave a lot of her years on research, she is very sincere.

Thank you Mrs. Rosalynn Carter, as I have someone in my family with the illness and you could not explain it any better than you did in your book " Helping Someone With Mental Illness ".

4 out of 5 stars Restoring an historic garden.......2003-06-05

Imagine buying a delapidated old manor house old manor house with a large overgrown garden for a very reasonable price and finding that not only was the house historically important but the garden, invisible under weed growth, had been designed by one of the most famous of English garden designers. Itýs hard to imagine who was most fortunate - the purchasers who lucked into this masterpiece but who paid for it many times over in the toil and expense of careful restoration, or the nation who almost lost a yet another treasure to developers.

The Wallingers, looking for a house that was fairly close to London, but within their price range, took a chance on a most unprepossessing house. This book tells the story of the restoration of the garden to the exact specifications of Gertrude Jekyll. It must have been a daunting task. The plans themselves, once they were unearthed, were difficult to read. To be honest, they look like a bunch of scribbles and scrawls and to have deciphered them at all is a remarkable achievement.

This book covers the first fifteen years of the gardenýs re-birth. It is a detailed account, taken from Rosamund Wallingerýs diary, but it is written with wit and style and her frustrations and triumphs are felt rather than read. And all along you can follow the illustrations of how the garden progressed from months of ripping up and burning to the glorious borders, wild garden and rose garden of the present.

But this is a value-for-money book with the story of one familyýs life work , not just a collection of pretty garden pictures. Not many people restore gardens, we usually start off from scratch. So this is a whole new viewpoint, and there is much that we gardeners can learn from it.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful and inspiring book.......2000-08-28

In 1983, Rosamund Wallinger (the author) and her husband purchased a turn-of-the-century manor house in Hampshire called Upton Grey, a large estate that needed many repairs and a derelict garden that was overgrown with weeds. While researching the history of the house, Wallinger learned that the garden was designed by the great garden designer Gertrude Jekyll. She had no interest in gardening before she moved to Upton Grey, but she did recognize Gertrude Jekyll's stature in gardening history, and so she set out to restore the garden to its original splendor, a task that would take more than a decade. She located Jekyll's original plans at the University of California and began a difficult process of translating the plans from Jekyll's bad handwriting and attempting to locate the plants that were originally used in the garden. Fortunately for us and herself, Wallinger kept a journal in which she documented her progress. The before and after photographs are amazing and the reader becomes quickly engrossed in Wallinger's project as well as a growing attachment to her menagerie of dogs, ducks and geese. This beautiful book will be an inspriation to any gardener, especially those have a formidable gardening challenge ahead of them.

5 out of 5 stars Gertrude Jekyll's Lost Garden: An Adventure in Restoration.......2000-08-25

During research for restoration of a derelict Arts and Crafts home, which had been designed by the famous English architect, Edwin Lutyens, to fit around the shell of an Elizabethan farmhouse, the new owners discovered that the original garden had been designed in 1908 by the legendary Gertrude Jekyll.

Rosamond Wallinger began research on the garden, discovered Jekyll's plans in the University of California's Bancroft Library, and `with the ignorance and enthusiasm of a true amateur', decided to restore the garden to its exact original glory

This story is a fascinating account of the labors, heartaches, and joys which accompanied the sixteen year project. It took her and her husband two years to remove the brambles and weeds which covered the two acres of original garden. The detective work required for the location of exact plants specified in the plans involved a global search and brought her many connections throughout England and Europe, gardeners who shared her enthusiasm for the project and provided information, seeds, and cuttings.

Wallinger, whose previous gardening experience was nearly non-existent, freely confesses the mistakes and mishaps which occurred during the project. Her meticulous records and beautiful photographs show the emergence of the now complete garden, the only fully restored Jekyll garden still in existence. Readers will enjoy the unfolding story, told with self-deprecating humor, which also contains practical advice and insight into the Jekyll's ,methods.

An eminently readable book of interest to garden historians, garden enthusiasts, and arm chair gardeners as well.

(The garden is now, in season, open to the public on a regular schedule, and visitors today can enjoy the paradise garden envisioned by Gertrude Jekyll nearly a century ago.)

My husband and I love this book. One of the major criteria for choosing our daughter's name was that the name was not too popular. This book gives a general popularity rating along with regional lists and lists of changing popularity over time. Also this book has the most extensive list of names I have ever seen in a baby name book. We spent hours reading this book even after we had chosen a name!

2 out of 5 stars Baby Name Countdown.......2003-05-01

This book was kind of disappointing because it only listed names without giving many descriptions, meanings or alternate spellings. It did however, give popular name lists for different areas of the country as well as ranks for previous decades. It does contain A LOT of names, but they are only in list form with nothing of use to help in deciding if a particular name would be good for you. I would prefer a book with more substance even if this one did have more names than any others I've found.

2 out of 5 stars Baby Name Countdown.......2002-10-11

This book definitely has a lot of names, but it is overwhelming and hard to use. There is a decent listing of popular names and their meanings (although the details provided regarding origin, alternate spellings, etc. are very sparse), but the section on unusual names is nearly useless. There are thousands of names, printed in very small print, with no information about any of them (origin, meaning, etc.). I regret buying this book because there are much more reasonably priced books that do a much better job of guiding your decision.

                        Book Description

When Duchamp moved from Paris to New York in 1915, he was disappointed by the predominantly nature-based abstraction he observed, publicly proclaiming that American artists were too dependent on outmoded European traditions and had overlooked their greatest subjects--the skyscraper and the machine. Meanwhile, the artists associated with Alfred Stieglitz and his "291" gallery remained loyal to their belief in nature as a source of ongoing renewal for visual culture, and emphasized the crucial role that intuition and spirituality played in their creation of art. The crossfire between Duchamp and Stieglitz and their respective circles defined a critical moment in early twentieth-century American art. Debating Modernism includes reproductions of work by artists from both camps, from Charles Demuth, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Paul Strand to Man Ray, Francis Picabia, and Marsden Hartley. An essay by curator Debra Bricker Balken traces the threads of the debate through the 1910s and 20s, and also addresses the appearance of sexualized imagery in nearly all of these artists' works, a phenomenon that ironically unifies the two seemingly opposed camps. Jay Bochner's essay focuses on the artists' respective violations of American expectations about art.

                          Book Description

Man Ray (1890-1976) has long been considered one of the most versatile and innovative artists of the twentieth century. As a painter, writer, sculptor, photographer, and filmmaker, he is best known for his intimate association with the French Surrealist group in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s, particularly for his highly inventive and unconventional photographic images. These remarkable accomplishments, however, have tended to overshadow the importance of his earlier work-significant not only for comprehending Man Ray's future artistic development, but also for fleshing out our understanding of the visual arts in America during one of the most important and crucial phases of modernism's evolution.

The book, and the exhibition for which it serves as the catalogue, concentrate on Man Ray's production from 1907 to 1917. Conversion to Modernism is the first comprehensive, fully illustrated work to examine this artist's seminal years, beginning with his high school years in Brooklyn, his studies at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design in New York, and the time he spent in life drawing classes at the more progressive Ferrer Center.

From 1913 to 1915, Man Ray lived in a small artists' colony in Grantwood, New Jersey. It was here, studying with Samuel Halpert (a former student of Matisse), that he began to become the artist we know today. Throughout this period, Man Ray's work developed methodically, in a gradual but certain evolution to abstraction. This progression culminated in 1916 with the publication of a remarkably early and important formalist tract, wherein the flat planar surface is established as a common vehicle of expression for all the arts: music, literature, dance, architecture, sculpture, and painting. The last section of the book includes recently discovered photographs and other works influenced by the emergent Dada movement. Here is Man Ray in recognizable form just before he leaves the country for France in 1921.

                                  Book Description

Lost Landscapes is the account of an intensely emotional journey by an award-winning Polish writer and historian who searches for the remaining traces of the culture of Polish Jews-permanently erased by the Holocaust and the subsequent forty-five years of Communist rule.

Agata Tuszynska first learned about the Jews of Poland by reading the novels of Isaac Bashevis Singer, the Polish-born Yiddish novelist and short story writer. Surrounded by silent mementos of that lost world -- a cemetery full of broken tombstones, a cinema in an ancient synagogue -- she stubbornly refused to accept its passing, deciding to re-create it from the memories of its dispersed and now aged inhabitants. Her travels took her to small Polish towns, once vibrant with Singer's heroes and now empty of any Jewish presence, to the cafes of Tel Aviv and the Jewish neighborhoods of New York. There, speaking with survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust, with Singer's colleagues and co-workers, working with the patient persistence of an archaeologist, she removes layers of pain and trauma to uncover memories deeply concealed and often purposely forgotten. From these personal and tragic experiences emerges a broad and tangled tapestry of Polish and Jewish lives lived side by side, observed in brilliant and vivid detail.

                                  1 out of 5 stars dissapointed.......2003-04-03

I expected an objective tale of a prewar life of Polish Jews in Poland. Jewish writer Tuszynska failed in my opinion. She is one of many Polish Jews who when discovered their roots try to make a living writing about Jewish subjects. Some are better than others, some worst. Tuszynska's great knowledge of Singer is unquestionable but her observations reflect deep anti-Polonizm. Maybe if she tries harder in a future she can create a masterpiece. One star for Tuszynska's book for picking the subject but I believe Singer deserves better.

                                  5 out of 5 stars a wonderful book!.......2001-01-14

Agata Tuszynska's book is written with talent, great dedication and sensitivity to tell as much as possible about Singer. The book shows the author's deep honesty in showing Singer as a person the literary world admired. I found it one of the most interestoing books I have read recently.
