Helping Someone with Mental Illness: A Compassionate Guide for Family, Friends, and Caregivers

Rosalynn Carter's "Helping Someone with Mental Illness" is a powerful tool that anyone--families, social workers, doctors, consumers--can put to good use. There are other such books on the shelf, such as Surviving Schizophrenia: A Family Manual, but Carter's is by far the best. She has managed to weave the deeply moving stories of many individuals into a cleanly organized discussion of every salient issue: diagnosis, treatment, scientific research, stigma, advocacy. Her descriptions of the different mental illnesses--schizophrenia, depression, manic-depression or bipolar illness, and the anxiety disorders--are particularly cogent, and her 20-page list of references is alone worth the price of the book.Carter never sugarcoats a hard truth or omits a painful statistic, but somehow her voice--warmly personal but also respectfully reserved--comes through so strongly that it is almost as if she is in the room with the reader. Coauthor Susan K. Golant, whom Carter thanks for her organizational skills--among other things--has done her work in a particularly unobtrusive way. This is much more than a book; it is a companion.
Reading Carter on mental illness is like reading Dr. Spock on child care. Having advocated for the mentally ill for most of her adult life, she is an acknowledged expert by now, and she writes with the authority one might expect. But her special status as a mother also subtly informs her text. Discussing caregiver burnout, she writes, "Having dinner at 6:00 p.m. each evening, going to church every Sunday, or watching a favorite TV show every day are all simple ways of maintaining a sense of control. Routines can create structure and a feeling of safety." Readers will be particularly grateful for Carter's constant, explicit suggestions for beating the stigma that often surrounds mental illness. Perhaps no book can be perfect--Carter writes little about post- traumatic stress disorder, a common affliction--but Helping Someone with Mental Illness comes very, very close. --Peggy Moorman
Book Description
The first thing you need to know is that life isn't over. "The good news," writes Mrs. Carter in Helping Someone with Mental Illness, "is that with proper diagnosis and treatment, the overwhelming majority of people with mental illness can now lead productive lives." Based on Mrs. Carter's twenty-five years of advocacy and the latest data from the Rosalynn Carter Symposia for Mental Illness, her book offers step-by-step information on what to do after the diagnosis: seeking the best treatment; evaluating health-care providers; managing workplace, financial, and legal matters.Customer Reviews:
Very Educational.......2001-10-27
A caring and compassionate work.......1999-05-12
facing the difficult challenge.......1999-05-07
The section on building resiliancy in children at risk for mental illness is reason alone to purchase this book. It is a wise, compassionate, humane treatus on a very important topic.
A first book for the reader uninformed about mental illness........1998-12-08
Carter writes simply and without exaggerating, so she is easy to read and to understand. With the resources listed in index "D", she equips the uninformed reader to bring understanding in his interaction with his/her co-workers and friends. This is especially important as mentally ill patients need support of those around them. They also need the same financial help that patients with surgical and medical problems receive.
Excellent Rosalynn Knows Everything About Mental Illness.......1998-10-19
Mrs. Carter started her journey many years ago and never tired of it, she is a true believer that if you want to get well you can never stop searching for the answer of which she never did.
Understanding the illness is the first battle. When I seen Rosalynn on the Larry King Live Show and she had introduced her new book, just by listening to her speak I knew she gave a lot of her years on research, she is very sincere.
Thank you Mrs. Rosalynn Carter, as I have someone in my family with the illness and you could not explain it any better than you did in your book " Helping Someone With Mental Illness ".

Book Description
Fascinating account of the faithful restoration of a Gertrude Jekyll Garden working to the original plans. Filled with practical advice.Customer Reviews:
Restoring an historic garden.......2003-06-05
The Wallingers, looking for a house that was fairly close to London, but within their price range, took a chance on a most unprepossessing house. This book tells the story of the restoration of the garden to the exact specifications of Gertrude Jekyll. It must have been a daunting task. The plans themselves, once they were unearthed, were difficult to read. To be honest, they look like a bunch of scribbles and scrawls and to have deciphered them at all is a remarkable achievement.
This book covers the first fifteen years of the gardenýs re-birth. It is a detailed account, taken from Rosamund Wallingerýs diary, but it is written with wit and style and her frustrations and triumphs are felt rather than read. And all along you can follow the illustrations of how the garden progressed from months of ripping up and burning to the glorious borders, wild garden and rose garden of the present.
But this is a value-for-money book with the story of one familyýs life work , not just a collection of pretty garden pictures. Not many people restore gardens, we usually start off from scratch. So this is a whole new viewpoint, and there is much that we gardeners can learn from it.
A beautiful and inspiring book.......2000-08-28
Gertrude Jekyll's Lost Garden: An Adventure in Restoration.......2000-08-25
Rosamond Wallinger began research on the garden, discovered Jekyll's plans in the University of California's Bancroft Library, and `with the ignorance and enthusiasm of a true amateur', decided to restore the garden to its exact original glory
This story is a fascinating account of the labors, heartaches, and joys which accompanied the sixteen year project. It took her and her husband two years to remove the brambles and weeds which covered the two acres of original garden. The detective work required for the location of exact plants specified in the plans involved a global search and brought her many connections throughout England and Europe, gardeners who shared her enthusiasm for the project and provided information, seeds, and cuttings.
Wallinger, whose previous gardening experience was nearly non-existent, freely confesses the mistakes and mishaps which occurred during the project. Her meticulous records and beautiful photographs show the emergence of the now complete garden, the only fully restored Jekyll garden still in existence. Readers will enjoy the unfolding story, told with self-deprecating humor, which also contains practical advice and insight into the Jekyll's ,methods.
An eminently readable book of interest to garden historians, garden enthusiasts, and arm chair gardeners as well.
(The garden is now, in season, open to the public on a regular schedule, and visitors today can enjoy the paradise garden envisioned by Gertrude Jekyll nearly a century ago.)

Book Description
When Duchamp moved from Paris to New York in 1915, he was disappointed by the predominantly nature-based abstraction he observed, publicly proclaiming that American artists were too dependent on outmoded European traditions and had overlooked their greatest subjects--the skyscraper and the machine. Meanwhile, the artists associated with Alfred Stieglitz and his "291" gallery remained loyal to their belief in nature as a source of ongoing renewal for visual culture, and emphasized the crucial role that intuition and spirituality played in their creation of art. The crossfire between Duchamp and Stieglitz and their respective circles defined a critical moment in early twentieth-century American art. Debating Modernism includes reproductions of work by artists from both camps, from Charles Demuth, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Paul Strand to Man Ray, Francis Picabia, and Marsden Hartley. An essay by curator Debra Bricker Balken traces the threads of the debate through the 1910s and 20s, and also addresses the appearance of sexualized imagery in nearly all of these artists' works, a phenomenon that ironically unifies the two seemingly opposed camps. Jay Bochner's essay focuses on the artists' respective violations of American expectations about art.

Conversion to Modernism: The Early Work of Man Ray
Francis M. Naumann , and Man Ray Manufacturer: Rutgers University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0813531489 |
Book Description
Man Ray (1890-1976) has long been considered one of the most versatile and innovative artists of the twentieth century. As a painter, writer, sculptor, photographer, and filmmaker, he is best known for his intimate association with the French Surrealist group in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s, particularly for his highly inventive and unconventional photographic images. These remarkable accomplishments, however, have tended to overshadow the importance of his earlier work-significant not only for comprehending Man Ray's future artistic development, but also for fleshing out our understanding of the visual arts in America during one of the most important and crucial phases of modernism's evolution. The book, and the exhibition for which it serves as the catalogue, concentrate on Man Ray's production from 1907 to 1917. Conversion to Modernism is the first comprehensive, fully illustrated work to examine this artist's seminal years, beginning with his high school years in Brooklyn, his studies at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design in New York, and the time he spent in life drawing classes at the more progressive Ferrer Center.
From 1913 to 1915, Man Ray lived in a small artists' colony in Grantwood, New Jersey. It was here, studying with Samuel Halpert (a former student of Matisse), that he began to become the artist we know today. Throughout this period, Man Ray's work developed methodically, in a gradual but certain evolution to abstraction. This progression culminated in 1916 with the publication of a remarkably early and important formalist tract, wherein the flat planar surface is established as a common vehicle of expression for all the arts: music, literature, dance, architecture, sculpture, and painting. The last section of the book includes recently discovered photographs and other works influenced by the emergent Dada movement. Here is Man Ray in recognizable form just before he leaves the country for France in 1921.

Lost Landscapes: In Search of Isaac Bashevis Singer and the Jews of Poland
Agata Tuszynska Manufacturer: Diane Pub Co ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0788198920 |
Book Description
Lost Landscapes is the account of an intensely emotional journey by an award-winning Polish writer and historian who searches for the remaining traces of the culture of Polish Jews-permanently erased by the Holocaust and the subsequent forty-five years of Communist rule.Agata Tuszynska first learned about the Jews of Poland by reading the novels of Isaac Bashevis Singer, the Polish-born Yiddish novelist and short story writer. Surrounded by silent mementos of that lost world -- a cemetery full of broken tombstones, a cinema in an ancient synagogue -- she stubbornly refused to accept its passing, deciding to re-create it from the memories of its dispersed and now aged inhabitants. Her travels took her to small Polish towns, once vibrant with Singer's heroes and now empty of any Jewish presence, to the cafes of Tel Aviv and the Jewish neighborhoods of New York. There, speaking with survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust, with Singer's colleagues and co-workers, working with the patient persistence of an archaeologist, she removes layers of pain and trauma to uncover memories deeply concealed and often purposely forgotten. From these personal and tragic experiences emerges a broad and tangled tapestry of Polish and Jewish lives lived side by side, observed in brilliant and vivid detail.
