2 out of 5 stars I was there too.......2007-08-15

I served in the Army JAGC during the time Lt. Col. Crouchet was a Military Judge and tried cases over which he presided. Col. Crouchet's recollections fit his view of the war and its participants. Not to say the events recounted didn't occur, only that they have been described as Col. Crouchet saw them. Others might place different emphasis on many of those events, and many would, I think, include telling events he omitted.

5 out of 5 stars Personal Account.......2001-09-23

Senseless violence, inexplicable rages, and bad judgment make up the very personal hell described in this memoir. These are...deeply personal accounts of the soldiers...as told by an author with 26 years of experience in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps.

5 out of 5 stars Women in Viet Nam.......1997-11-04

I particularly liked the idea of including Kathy in several chapters to explain that Viet Nam was not a place for men only.

5 out of 5 stars The only title by a US Military Judge who served in Viet Nam.......1997-11-04

The book covers areas that were widely discussed in the media at the time that they occurred. The Long Binh riots, murder & rape at the Americal division, the commanding officer who demanded a body count and a discussion of project 100K, which allowed soldiers to enter the military service who were not otherwise qualified. Also included are scenes from Saigon where high ranking civilians and military lived a life of luxury.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful resource from birth through elementary school.......2007-04-04

I bought this book after I had my first child 6 years ago. I have consistently referred to it and found the information very useful and the recommendations quite reasonable. It covers every subject you may encounter in a true reference format. The book comes in VERY handy when you have a sick or injured child, but are unsure if a trip to the ER is necessary. This book has been my standard gift to anyone expecting their first child.

      5 out of 5 stars It's a MUST have.......2003-06-13

This book is awesome. I'm a mother of 2 and didn't need any help with my first child, but my second child was very difficult and I found this to be an invaluable resource. It even lets you know when you should contact your doctor or when you should head to the emergency room. Being from Boston, I know that Boston Children's Hospital is one of the best in the nation. What is also great about this book is that it covers the developmental tasks of a typical child for a specific age group. It is a great basis to know if your child is under or over performing and helps you find your strengths and weaknnesses. It also has all of the growth charts in the back and an amazing appendix of different child illnesses. Anything you could possible want to know or have questions about when and if you need to be concerned is in here. It's like a Bible!

5 out of 5 stars The Only Guide that New Parents Need!.......2001-12-23

If you are about to have your first child, buy this book. If one of your children or grandchildren is about to have a first child, give this book to her or him as a gift. If you like this book as much as I think you will, you should consider having a copy at home and one in each of the family cars for situations that arise while away from home.

This book deserves more than five stars. It is the only comprehensive guide to childhood development and illnesses that I have seen. The content is remarkable for being easy to understand, concise, and representing many different perspectives (including those of moms, dads, elder siblings, physicians, and other health care professionals). The book exudes a respectful sense of optimism that parents will do a good job, and avoids taking stands about issues related to religious preferences. At the same time, the book is quite up-front about pointing out what works best for children and their families.

The book is organized so that the first four sections deal with developmental issues, from learning to mimic to toilet training to dealing with jealous siblings to school adjustment, on through the school age years in considerable detail. The fifth part gives you information on childhood illnesses, injuries, and conditions.

I particularly liked the way the development sections talked about how children usually regress just before making a major development, and that this is healthy. The book even points out the good sides of childish outbursts. I wish someone had told me these things many years ago!

Having been a parent of four children over the last 30 years, I checked out the book against every illness, emergency, and developmental issue that I ran into for my own children and their friends. In each case, there was relevant material that told me more than I knew when I had to deal with each of these issues, despite having read every book on child care that I could lay my hands on prior to the experience. In particular, the book is very good at explaining both the near-term and the long-term consequences of a situation. For example, one of our children went into severe convulsions with a sudden spike in fever to 106 degrees. The book points out that this happens to about five percent of all children, more often to boys, and that there usually are no long-term consequences. I wish I had known that at the time.

I would especially like to praise the chapter on child care, which has 31 pages that summarize the best and latest research on how to select the right kind of child care if both parents work. You even get what the ratio of child-care people should be to children at different ages. Further, there's an excellent section earlier on what's involved when a child is sick, including how parents should think about how to balance their work and the needs of a sick child who needs a parent at home.

Of particular value to new parents will be the sections in each area called "When to Call the Doctor" which gives you a sense of not only "when" but "how quickly" you should seek help.

To get some idea of how contemporary and extensive this book is, you will find a section on "Body Piercing Infections."

Unlike many books on childhood and pediatric illnesses, this one is not the views of one person. Instead, over 80 physicians and pediatric experts combined to share their expertise, drawing on individuals practicing at Boston Children's Hospital or teaching at Harvard Medical School. I have great faith in Boston Children's Hospital having often taken our children there to deal successfully with important illnesses. I am also pleased to say that one of our children has survived the experience to become a staff member in the hospital's emergency room.

The section on emergencies is not only good, it is also organized to help you prepare to handle emergencies before they occur . . . and to avoid them in some cases. Those pages are rimmed in pink so you can find them quickly if you are in a panic.

Give children the best informed and most loving attention you can!

5 out of 5 stars Brand new and a must have!.......2001-07-26

I have been a pediatric nurse for 25 years and a parent for 15. I wanted to get a reference book for new parents and found this one published this year. I'm a big fan of Dr. Brazelton and his Touch Points which are included here regarding child development. The disease section was very thorough and I particularly liked the asthma section. It has the most recent treatment modalities laid out simply and clearly. I bought this at a regular bookstore for full price because I had to see for myself if it was of any value. It is an excellent reference, a "must have" for any parent. ....

      5 out of 5 stars Calms the New-Parent Jitters!.......2001-03-22

I bought this book for my brother and his wife, new parents of a 10-week old girl, after the baby got her first cold. We wished we had bought this excellent manual sooner! Not only would the common-sense approach have calmed the new parents, but we could have saved an expensive doctor visit. The book has an extensive illness section that appeals to men who just want the facts, plus offers lots of tips and sidebar articles. A keeper!

        4 out of 5 stars Hands-On Therapy.......2006-11-06

This is a great book for people who like to knit, crochet or do needlework to help relieve stress, soften grief, and to give love. For me, crocheting is something repetitive, rhythmic and very calming. By slowing down to crochet for 30-60 min a day & focusing all of my thoughts & feelings on the intended recipient of the project, I am able to escape from the anxiety and stress of everyday life. I thought I was the only person who felt that way until I read this book. I don't know many people who do needlework and it was wonderful to hear stories from other crafters. The only part I disagree with is the title "Cheaper Than Therapy"--Crocheting is not always cheap! I sometimes spend $100 or more on a single project!

5 out of 5 stars A strongly recommended read for fiber artists and needlecraft hobbyists.......2006-03-11

Knowledgeably edited by Annie Modesitt, Cheaper Than Therapy: Joy, Healing And Life Lessons In Fiber is an impressive and memorable compilation of poems and writings drawn from a large selection of writers revealing the essence of the therapeutic nature sewing, knitting, crocheting, and spinning. The reader will discover hidden secrets as to why so many people take the needlecraft arts as such a popular and widespread hobby. Cheaper Than Therapy is a strongly recommended read for fiber artists and needlecraft hobbyists for its definitive ability to engage the reader from beginning to end.

Reading each of the essays in this book has taken me on quite a ride of emotions. I have been divorced, shopping at Super Yarn Mart, meditating, barn dancing, enduring Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and grieving. The common thread, the source of hope, the tool of choice is fiber and the authors of these essays have all experienced amazing life changes as they knitted, crocheted and shopped with fiber.

This is the first in a series of inspirational/motivational gift books that use inanimate objects as metaphors for enhancing the way we live. In this lighthearted look at personal problem solving patterns, "Cheaper Than Therapy: How to Keep Life's Small Problems from Becoming Big Ones", illustrates "The Lesson of the Paper Clips". Gina Greenlee uses playful images of pliant paper clips to show how choosing what seems to be the easy way out of life's small problems often results in bigger, more overwhelming ones.

5 out of 5 stars ITS CHEAPER THAN THERAPY.......2007-03-04

I first read "The Lesson of the Chopsticks" and must say that I was not disappointed reading "How to Keep Life's Small Problems from Becoming Big Ones"! Ms.Greenlee's unique view of life's everyday challenges is one we all can identify with on some level.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is in need of a boost to handle procrastination and prioritizing. Ms. Greenlee's uncovers a profound truth using vivid illustrations and metaphors to convey her point and shift us out of our "comfort zone". And, it's a LOT CHEAPER THAN THERAPY!

Finally, a most enjoyable and interesting book filled with practical and useful guidance that can be helpful for every age and every level. Each lesson is deeply meaningful, yet stated so simply. A true Gem!!!

5 out of 5 stars An opportunity to grow.......2007-01-29

Who knew that paying attention to inanimate objects could be so powerful? In "Paperclips", Ms. Greenlee has humorously and quite consciously given us a roadmap to sorting through the habits we all develop when faced with discomfort. Reading it again and again gives the reader a fresh way of envisioning life's way of offering opportunities to grow.

5 out of 5 stars Coping with Clutter.......2006-11-17

This charmingly simple book spoke volumes to me about the dangers of a disorganized life, and brought to mind several practical applications. If I don't hang up my clothes every night, my bedroom is soon an unworkable mess. If I don't take care of my mail (and other paperwork) diligently and often, it soon becomes overwhelming, and I can't find that piece of paper I really need. If I don't spot-clean the kitchen and baths (almost) every day, things get disgusting quite quickly, and germs can grow. And the list could go on. It's so refreshing to see a simple, highly useful truth presented in such an engaging way, and I look forward to the next "lesson." Way to go, Gina!

A quick read that leaves you feeling refreshed and confident to face the challenges ahead. This is not a book you'll read just once but one you'll reference again and again.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE! Great Read with practical advise.......2007-05-05

What a great way to bring home the life lesson: "There are no great rewards without taking risks". This book, although small in size, is big on practical advice on how to achieve your growth potential. I am amazed at Gina Greenlee's ability to get to the heart of why we shun change or opportunities to improve our lives. You can tell that she has been there and walked the walk. Her book is timely for me as I am learning finally to face some of my own fears and anxieties. Whenever I get those unsettled feelings that she refers to, I can grab this book and in less than 20 minutes I get the encouragement I need to take on the challenge. The rewards ARE immediate: I gain the satisfaction of facing my fear and doing "it" anyway. Also, the seed of hope grows when I say to myself, "see, you can do this! And yes, it is cheaper than therapy. I highly recommend this book to everyone. Everyone has areas in their lives that they need to enlarge.

AWESOME!! A POWERFUL AND INSPIRING MESSAGE

"How to Take Risks to Create the Life - The Lesson of the Chopsticks" is a BRILLIANT use of metaphor for anyone on the brink of a life transformation or anyone who simply is ready to experience a different approach to an age-old problem -- fear. Ms. Greenlee's skillful use of the chopsticks as a metaphor for taking risks creates an instant connection to the infinite possibilities available to all of us.

As a family therapist, I can attest to the difficulty that many of us face when confronted with the idea of trying something different or new. The fear of criticism, rejection, self-doubt and the myriad of other inhibit us from pursuing our dreams with passion and living an authentic life. Ms. Greenlee not only helps us start the healing journey to overcome fear, with her unique lesson in using chopsticks, but she also provides the strategy to apply these insights in our lives.

This is a must read for anyone who is ready to explore the possibilities and learn to use chopsticks! I am sharing this little book with all my friends and clients.

I anxiously await Ms. Greenlee's next pearl of wisdom.

Although this is the second of a series, I read this first as I was intrigued by the title. I couldn't put it down and the illustrations drove the author's message home. I enjoyed it immensely and now plan to read the first book in the "Cheaper Than Therapy" series. Gina, when's the third one coming out?

This is one of my favorite books that I have at my office for my employees to read. I feel that everyone is able to get something positive from this book. The idea of trying a new approach at something like eating with chop sticks can be applied to any new project that you are about to do. Again this is one that I try to have everyone I know read.

Chopsticks is a "must read" for coaches. Using the metaphor of learning to use chopsticks, Greenlee offers a simple, yet poignant way to get us to look inward to create the life we want. The book also makes a great client gift to kick-off a coaching engagement.

A highly readable and practical guide to achieving that delicate balance of academic excellence and high self-esteem, Getting Our Kids Back on Track is a realistic look at today's families and their frustrations in trying to "do it all." Full of stories from all kinds of families, examples abound of different parenting styles, teaching methods, and children's personalities. None of these is presented as being "right" or "wrong"--but the author doesn't hesitate to offer suggestions. From homework battles to overbooked sports activities, everyday occurrences are examined and questioned: is it necessary, for example, to spend four hours each day shuttling kids to sports practice, or is there a better way of spending that time? Topics are relevant from kindergarten through the teens, and tend to focus on clear communication and regular examination of priorities to help families stay on track. For quick reference, author Janine Bempechat includes an appendix of questions that relate to each chapter--questions to ask both yourself and your children's teachers. While Back on Track is an excellent starting place for longer dialogues, there are no quick answers to questions like "How much importance am I placing on my children's education relative to other activities in their lives?" and "What do you think are my children's strengths, and how do you think I can encourage their development in those areas?" Still, the stories are warm and humorous, and the book as a whole is encouraging. --Jill Lightner

                Book Description

Getting Our Kids Back on Track is a no-nonsense guide for achieving academic success written by an acclaimed expert in the study of motivation and achievement in children. In this indispensable resource, author Janine Bempechat claims that the so-called self-esteem movement has actually worked to undermine academic excellence in our nation's schools. As an alternative, she offers parents clear-cut advice and details step by step how to create a structured, predictable, and consistent home environment that will inspire children to reach their full intellectual potential.

                5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2000-05-20

A very helpful and enjoyable read. The stories really helped to bring the book into the context of our daily lives. It was easy to relate to many of the families in the book...and Bempechat's advice was reasonable and easy to follw. She didn't make the reader feel like there was an absolute "right and wrong" way, but points out some of the pitfalls we, as parents, all find ourselves in when trying to motivate our children in school.

This book is wonderfully informative and entertaining. Bempechat speaks in language accessible to all parents about the struggles we all face trying to do the best for our kids' education. Her anecdotes and suggestions for dealing with everyday problems, such as homework, are right on the mark. Not at all preachy, Bempechat urges that we think about what works best for us and our families, to help us help our kids do well in school. A must read!

                  Book Description

Part memoir, part commentary, Life on the Fringes charts a startling Jewish feminist journey both solitary and engaging. Haviva Ner-David draws us into the many facets of her life's story: a complex modern Orthodox childhood (including a battle with anorexia); adherence to a unique combination of Jewish observances; the emergence of her feminist commitments and support of gays and lesbians in Jewish life; a serious engagement with Jewish texts -- and now, studying for rabbinic ordination with an Orthodox rabbi in Israel, where Ner-David and her family have made their home.

Over time, we see Ner-David take on both traditionally male practices -- donning a tallit and tefillin every day, wearing tzitzit at all times -- as well as those of traditional Jewish women -- covering her head, and observing in great detail the laws of niddah which govern a woman's separation from her husband in the days surrounding her menstrual period. Her personal wrestling and her halakhic analysis help us see Jewish tradition in new, more textured ways -- and lets us see new possibilities for our own lives.

Writing with warmth, vision, and passion, Ner-David unwraps her often startling package of Jewish choices, inviting readers into her many worlds, even as she challenges us to examine and deepen our own allegiances and Jewish feminist journeys. No one who takes seriously the intersection of feminism and traditional Judaism will be able to ignore this book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Memoir, But Non-Orthodox Jews Will Be Baffled.......2004-10-14

I read this book as part of a series on Jewish women pioneers in the rabbinate for my Jewish Renewal women's havurah. We liked the book, and respected Ner-David's commitment and fighting spirit in her pursuit of Orthodox ordination. She writes beautifully and perceptively about spirituality, her stormy adolescence, and her gradual evolution into a female Orthodox rabbinical student.

But as mostly non-Orthodox Jewish feminists, we were sometimes baffled by her persistence in trying to gain acceptance from an Orthodox community that seemed to mostly want her gone and was frequently very cruel to her.

I kept thinking --- "why doesn't she just get ordained as a Conservative rabbi? why throw herself against a brick wall?" Also, the parts of the book where she did technical analyses of the Orthodox laws of family purity, the mikveh, male rabbinical control of Orthodox women's lives, etc. were tedious and baffling for non-Orthodox feminists --- I kept thinking "this stuff is really offensively medieval --- why do you put up with it in the 21st century?"

But --- that's just my bias. The Orthodox feminists (see the Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance at www.jofa.org) have built a strong and viable women's movement of their own, and as an Orthodox feminist, Ner-David commands my respect for her willingness to stay and fight on her own turf, and we share a passionate commitment to Jewish prayer and spirituality.

5 out of 5 stars A thoughtful, important work for the modern religious Jew.......2004-09-08

This is a serious, reflective work on a modern woman's journey to find equality within traditional [read Orthodox] Judaism. The author lives in Israel, where the secular and religious world are much more polarized than in her native USA. Each chapter focuses on one issue - Halakhah, Mikveh, Torah, God - and her efforts to integrate an egalitarian practice in her daily life. A thoughtful work for readers who are serious about women's roles in traditional Judaism.

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opening Account.......2003-08-26

This fabolous book is an private view into the world of an orthodox feminist that should be required reading for all women and men especially Jewish girls in Jewish day schools who have questions about feminism and how to still be observantly Jewish but don't know who to turn to. I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to read this book. Robin Davina Meyerson, author of A Son Returns; True Stories of Serendipity and Divine Intervention

5 out of 5 stars A deeply thought provoking read..........2002-12-16

A huge Yasher Koach to Haviva Ner David on her fantastic exploration of post-denominational feminist Judiaism. This is a wonderful book for anyone struggling with their own place within the traditional Jewish community. I am so glad to have read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Universal questions and a unique life..........2002-01-03

This is a book I could never before have read with an open mind.

Fifteen years ago, I'd have dismissed Ner-David as an apologist for Orthodoxy, trying to cram modern sensibilities into a hopelessly outdated mold. Ten years ago, during my own tumultuous "return," I'd have sneered at her willingness to entertain thoughts of mixed seating, uncovered hair and egalitarian prayer.

It's only now, I think, that I'm ready to hear the honest questions Ner-David and others like her are asking and to understand that the Judaism we share is resilient enough to answer to -- and thrive from -- challenge and diversity.

Ner-David's narrative, interwoven with threads dealing with her own physical frailty, tells a story not of a senseless rebellion against Orthodoxy but of a young woman's awakening to a deeper, more genuine love of her tradition.

I wish Ms Ner-David a Yasher Kocheich -- may she never stop asking.
