    Book Description

Author Ted Gruhn enlisted in the Navy as a carpenter's mate in September, 1941. On his firs voyage at sea, headed toward Pearl Harbor, he asked a shipmate if he thought the cook would bake a cake for his birthday?December 7. Ted Gruhn missed the attack by a day, but would see plenty of action at sea over the course of World War II, including Leyte Gulf and the biggest sea battle of the war at Okinawa. He served first on a destroyer, the USS Farenholt, then on a destroyer escort, the USS Abercrombie. Gruhn?s wartime duty began as a shore patrolman in Honolulu, where he patrolled bars and whorehouses and came upon a murder in an alley. Shipboard, he was resourceful, requisitioning CO2 canisters to keep beer cold, and participating in ?borrowing? a second film projector so he and his mates could see movies without interruption for changing reels. All the while, he was corresponding with a girl back home, who he married while on brief stateside duty. This is one sailor's story, but it mirrors those of thousands of other brave young servicemen who gave their all during that terrible time.

This little volume contains a series of letters written by Benson Bidwell on how he came to create flying cows. The surgeon-as-rock-star mystique seems like it must have come straight out of Hollywood, but the myth had to begin more concretely. A good candidate is Minnesota's Dr. Walt Lillehei, the hard-working, hard-playing father of open-heart surgery, whose life is told in garish color in King of Hearts by journalist G. Wayne Miller. From his early brilliance, recovery from deadly lymphatic cancer, and dramatic repair of seemingly hopeless heart cases to the disintegration of his career at its peak thanks to an army of personal enemies and conviction on tax evasion counts, his story is consistently surprising and engaging. Fast cars, hard drinking, and plenty of women filled his time when he wasn't turning lives around with a few strokes of his scalpel, and the reader will find the surgeon's actions almost unbelievable--rarely endearing, but occasionally saintly. Combining this melodramatic biography with the fascinating story of the struggle for open-heart surgery, considered impossible little more than a generation ago, Miller makes a compelling case that the daring scientist was simply another side of the arrogant, absent-minded playboy. No ordinary biography, King of Hearts is breathless reading--you'll find yourself surfacing every few chapters to remind yourself its nonfiction. --Rob Lightner

        Book Description

Few of the great stories of medicine are as palpably dramatic as the invention of open-heart surgery, yet, until now, no journalist has ever brought all of the thrilling specifics of this triumph to life.

This is the story of the surgeon many call the father of open-heart surgery, Dr. C. Walton Lillehei, who, along with colleagues at University Hospital in Minneapolis and a small band of pioneers elsewhere, accomplished what many experts considered to be an impossible feat: He opened the heart, repaired fatal defects, and made the miraculous routine.

Acclaimed author G. Wayne Miller draws on archival research and exclusive interviews with Lillehei and legendary pioneers such as Michael DeBakey and Christiaan Barnard, taking readers into the lives of these doctors and their patients as they progress toward their landmark achievement. In the tradition of works by Richard Rhodes and Tracy Kidder, King of Hearts tells the story of an important and gripping piece of forgotten science history.

        Book Description

In this book, the author has drawn together one hundred of the best pasta sauce recipes, encountered after many years of living, eating and cooking in Italy. Many of them are simple sauces that can be cooked in a few minutes. Others are elaborate confections from the kitchens of great Italian families. All of them adapt well to the needs of other countries, and other climates.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but be careful.......2007-05-06

This book was rather amazing. All of the recipes turned out great, and many of them were very simple. The traditional pasta sauces like Pesto and Pomodoro turned out quite well, and several simple vegetable sauces also turned surprisingly good for how simple they were to prepare. Simple grocery store canned tuna was turned into something wonderful in Seed's recipes for Tonno e Limone and Tonne e Pomodoro. And my favorite recipe I've tried so far was a lemon sauce made from heavy cream, two lemons, a little grappa, and nothing else. It just provided a very silky, lemony coating to some very fortunate linguine. The best thing about these recipes is that they work in a weekday throw together meal or as the pasta course in an elegant Italian dinner. It's a really versatile book, and very nicely illustrated to boot.

The only downside is that the recipes are a little imprecise for my taste. Too often, I found myself asking "do I simmer covered, or uncovered" and other various forks in the recipe road where the author provides no direction. I understand this is part of the nature of Italian cooking and if it turns out well, who cares? But a beginning cook is probably going to find this a bit confusing, and those who like precise recipes down to the letter are probably not going to like it as much as I did.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful and relatively complete catalog of pasta dishes........2005-09-16

`The Top One Hundred Pasta Sauces' by Diane Seed, Illustrated by Robert Budwig, is only slightly misnamed in that it is really a book of the author's top 100 favorite pasta dishes. Every recipe is a combination of a specific shape and variety (dried or fresh) of pasta, a specific cooking method (baked or top of the stove), and a specific `finishing touch' of cheese, parsley, basal, or what have you. The best evidence that this book deals with dishes and not sauces is the concluding chapter which includes two different recipes for that ultimate pasta dish, the timballo or macaroni pie.

The book does not select its top 100 from a study of other cookbooks, the author has selected these recipes from her own experiences with cooks throughout Italy from her base in Rome. That does not mean her selection of recipes is a lot different from what you get by polling 20 cookbooks of Italian recipes. Every recipe you may expect to find here is really here, even if a bit it may take a bit of looking to locate some favorites. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that the book has NO INDEX! If this were not such an otherwise so thoroughly delightful book, I would certainly consider this as grounds to demote it by at least one star.

But with some perserverence, you will find Pasta Puttanesca, Spaghetti Carbonara, Ragu Bolognaise, Rigatoni with four cheeses (mac and cheese), Pasta Primavera, Pasta with Pesto, Pasta and meatballs, and the aforementioned timballi recipes. The only `famous' pasta recipes I could not find were fettucini Alfredo, a Vodka sauce, or any gnocchi recipes, althought there were several cream based sauces and also many which were made with either wine or brandy. I must note that the `mac and cheese' recipe given here is unlike any recipe you will find in a book aimed specifically at American audiences, as it is made without either a custard or a bechamel sauce. I am really pleased to find this recipe, as I saw a similar one in another pasta book and thought it was something of a mistake. Turns out the mistake was mine, in not fully appreciating the import of some instructions.

I am certain the author did not base her selection of sauces entirely on popularity because the book covers just about every different type of sauce you can imagine, including the whole spectrum of ingredients from green vegetables to beans and lentils to mushrooms to seafood to pork and beef and lamb to olives to squash and pumpkin to nuts to lemon. And, the book is very nicely organized by these principle ingredients, except for the last chapter of special celebratory dishes which either include many different ingredients or include relatively expensive ingredients. This wide variety makes the book a perfect source if you happen to need a recipe with which to use up some frozen peas. Luckily, the table of contents is quite good at pointing to the right page for such a need, especially as this silly book HAS NO INDEX!!!

It is quite appropriate that the illustrator receive front page credit for this book, as the excellent color drawings, probably done with colored pencil or crayon, make this book a joy to browse.

Aside from the lack of an index, the book is also just a bit lax in referring from one recipe to another within the book. All such references are easily misunderstood, as when we are instructed to find something in the `third' recipe, where it is not said whether it means the third recipe in the chapter or the third recipe in the book (they meant the third recipe in the chapter, not my first guess).

I am very fond of the fact that almost all measurements are in both English and metric units. On the other hand, I have the feeling that the cooking procedures are aimed at someone with just a bit more a beginner's kitchen skills. Several of the typical little hints given in Italian recipes such as warnings not to cook the garlic too hard or to cut the basil at the last minute are missing.

While the book covers much more than just sauces, it is not a book on pasta, as there is not a single pasta recipe anywhere to be found. That is probably why there are no gnocchi recipes, as gnocchi is one form of pasta which is almost invariably made at home.

If you have no Italian cookbooks and like pasta (and you have no interest in creating a library of Italian cookbooks), then I think this should be the very next cookbook you buy. If you simply like attractive cookbooks, then you certainly cannot miss this one, as it is relatively inexpensive and will take up little room on your shelf. I have even almost forgiven it's not having an INDEX!!!

5 out of 5 stars terrific first pasta cookbook.......2005-03-30

wonderful intoduction to Italian pasta; worlds beyond just tomato and meat sauce, good though that may be. Highly, highly recommended: unusual, inventive sauces, many inexpensive and quick, but also several luxurious ones for special occasions or just to try. Thank God it's still in print.

5 out of 5 stars Best pasta cookbook ever!.......2003-06-07

A college friend turned me onto Diane Seed's cookbook, otherwise I might have overlooked such a slim volume, thinking that it didn't have much to offer. This little cookbook is packed full of terrific pasta recipes, all organized around the featured vegetable or ingredient: mushrooms, lemon, zucchini, walnuts, peas, spinach, etc. Most recipes are quick and simple to make, requiring only a few ingredients. One of the things I really appreciate about this cookbook is knowing that if I keep a few basic Italian cheeses and other ingredients on hand, I can whip up a really yummy dinner after stopping at the local produce market or farmers market for the fresh vegetables. Several recipes can be prepared with non-perishable items from the pantry, but don't taste like dinner came from a can.

In addition to delicious, easy-to-follow recipes, the illustrations in "Top 100 Pasta Sauces" make it a delight to peruse.

5 out of 5 stars Misleading Title, and not the best Italian cookbook..........2003-04-11

...but that's only because the best Italian cookbook is Diane Seed's "Top 100 Italian Dishes."

There is nothing to dislike about this book! The misleading title complaint is only because this isn't just a book of pasta sauces, unless you consider things like Fusilli con Polpettine (Fusilli with meatballs) or Penne alla Alberoni (baked penne with shrimp and mushrooms) to be just a sauce.

By the way, the meatballs and the baked penne are two of my top 10 favourite recipes -- I perfected the meatball recipe, and I'm forever messing around with the penne, using scallops instead of shrimp, adding sake, feta cheese, green and waxed beans (but steam or zap those first, I discovered). It is such a foolproof recipe that it is possible to experiment like that and still know that dinner will be ready in 30 minutes, and that your guests will love it and demand the recipe.

Warning: This is NOT a Westernized cookbook, it is an unapologetically Italian cookbook with extremely authentic recipes. There is very little meat in most of these recipes, and pairings of things that would rarely be thought of outside of Italy, like a main dish composed entirely of pasta, chickpeas, and celery.

However, if you are prepared to be adventurous, and would like a source of wonderful meals that take less than 30 minutes to prepare, then this is the book for you. Come home exhausted, put a big pot of water on, sit down and relax until it boils, then create Linguine alle Olive in ten minutes flat. Linguine, garlic, black olives, olive oil, parsley salt, parmesan on the side, is all. You can dramatically change the recipe just by choosing what kind of black olives, from regular mild canned olives to intense oily kalamatas (I recommend the latter).

This book is completely filled with recipes like that. I much prefer photographs of finished dishes in cookbooks, but the fanciful illustrations here (by Robert Budwig) turn the book into a work of art.

Not all of the recipes are quickies, but the slower ones are where Ms. Seed does most of her teaching. You literally have NO idea what Spaghetti Bolognese is until you have spent a couple of hours making her version (only a half hour of that time requires your presence in the kitchen).

I've had this book for several years, so it is now dog-eared and much scribbled upon. I must have made at least thirty of the recipes, with only one dud, and that just because my palate just couldn't encompass the idea of having lemon as the overriding flavour in a main dish.

In summary: a wonderful cookbook, mostly full of very simple recipes that call for little time and few (but excellent) ingredients, coupled with a few time-consuming spectacular creations for special occasions.

Now, do yourself a favour and check out the BEST Italian cookbook...

5 out of 5 stars Wow! So many different projects in all seasons!.......2005-07-17

In this book, they grouped the projects with nice symbols and by season to make it easier for you. There are Nature Projects, Back-to-School Projects, Bird Projects, Sport Projects, Pumpkin Decorations, and a whole lot more! The Cool Paper Book Covers in the Fall Season are a good project for kids (as well as a lot of other projects for kids). My favorite project in the book are the heart embellished Valentine Day cards. I haven't made any of those projects yet, but I am sure I will have so much fun making them! :-)

From Christmas to Valentine's Day, birthday parties to wedding celebrations, and everything in between, Celebrate Simply seeks to bring the fun back into holidays and special occasions.

5 out of 5 stars Emphasis on the person-to-person connections that holidays are truly all about........2007-04-07

Written by resourceful wife and mother Nancy Twigg, Celebrate Simply is a solid guide to learning how to celebrate the true meanings of holidays without excessive shopping and overspending. Although a spiritual as well as family-centered guide, Celebrate Simply primarily focuses upon practical strategies for joyful celebration on a budget. Chapters discuss meaningful gift giving, simplifying Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, wedding celebrations (and this is sorely needed in today's hyper-expensive wedding culture), Halloween, Thanksgiving and graduation ceremonies, and also birthdays and anniversaries. Enthusiastically recommended for all families regardless of income level, as the frugal suggestions are notable for their emphasis on the person-to-person connections that holidays are truly all about. "Look for free or low-cost activities that could serve as the theme and entertainment for the [children's birthday] party. Does your city have a children's museum? Is a local church hosting a free puppet show?"

This book isn't just about Christmas. It's about solving the problems of stress and overspending on any holiday or special occasion--and recapturing the spirit of celebration. Celebrate Simply provides creative examples and ideas for simpler, more economical, more meaningful traditions and gift giving.

Author Nancy Twigg writes from a clear Christian perspective, providing biblical and historical insight for many holidays and celebrations. Chapters are dedicated to birthdays and anniversaries, weddings, graduations, Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother's and Father's Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I have the first edition of this book and was excited to read the revised and expanded edition. I'm sure you could find a used copy of the original at a very low price, but I highly recommend the updated version instead. Nancy has added additional wisdom and insight along with new suggestions for gift giving and celebrating.

Celebrate Simply is a well organized, handy reference book that I consult often.

If you dread the Holiday Season, or keep worrying about what is the "perfect gift" then you're going to like Nancy Twigg's enthusiastic ideas about how to CELEBRATE SIMPLY. She covers all the usual holidays, offering candid stories about some celebration catastrophes. Then she discusses ideas about gifts, sets out checklists & has an extensive resources section on just about anything you would want to know including how to soothe your pre-holiday jitters & the inevitable post-party blues.

While couched in Christianity, RebeccasReads recommends Nancy Twigg's offerings of what your grandmother used to know & which, in this strange new world, we seem to have forgotten.

If you are looking as I was to take the anxiety out of the holidays, save money, and put Christ back into your festivities, then this book is for you. I started implementing what I had read after reading the first chapter and it saved me dollars and stress, as I had a month where I had to buy three graduation gifts, a baby shower gift, and three birthday gifts. The author, Nancy Twigg, makes the book simple, easy reading, but it is packed full of helpful information. This book is a must-have for each home and church library of those who want to simplify all of the holidays. I highly recommend it to all people!

5 out of 5 stars Recapture the spirit of special celebrations and holidays.......2003-07-08

Are you one of the many people who look upon holidays as just another deadline in life? For many people the additional financial stress, time pressures, and other factors seem to take the pleasure right out of holidays and other special occasions. Nancy Twigg starts with an illustration of a holiday gone wrong that we can all sympathize with - Christmas. From there she discusses gift giving in general and the "rules" of gift giving that create stress. She shows how these "rules" are not valid in the context of meaningful gift giving.

The remainder of the book examines specific holidays and provides a healthy, historical perspective of the holiday as well as simpler and easier methods to celebrate. Throughout the book her Christian perspective is in the forefront even to the point of quoting several Bible verses at appropriate places. Specific holidays and special occasions examined include Christmas, Valentine's day, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, weddings, Halloween, Thanksgiving, birthdays, and anniversaries. The final chapter gives many selected resources to implement the ideas in the book.

Some of the ideas are wonderful lessons for children. I especially liked the Resurrection Cookies that are part of the Easter Holiday suggestions. Complete with the recipe and suggested Bible verses that apply to the preparation and cooking process it is a truly innovative activity. If holidays represent additional work and stress for you instead of holiday joy and excitement then this book is for you; especially if you are a Christian and want suggestions on alternative ways to recapture the holiday spirit with a religious focus. "Celebrate Simply" is a highly recommended read.

Excellent decades-long study of the illustrator and caricaturist George Cruikshank, best known as an early illustrator of Charles Dickens' works. Not merely about Cruikshank but a very full account of the social and material contexts of England at the time. The book even describes in great detail the methods of engraving at the time. AWolf in the Attic is a powerful memoir written by a psychoanalyst who was a hidden child in Poland during World War II. Her story, in addition to its immediate impact, illustrates her struggle to come to terms with the powerful yet sometimes subtle impact of childhood trauma. A Wolf in the Attic follows the author's life as she gradually becomes able to reclaim her past, to understand its impact on her life and the choices she has made, and finally, to heal a part of herself that she had been so long taught to deny.

I thought the book was excellent! I have read dozens of books about the Holocaust and this document certainly offers a different and vital perspective that has not previously been covered in the literature. As you progress through the book, it is quite clear that the after-effects for Holocaust survivors are persistent and nagging, and greatly affect them for the rest of their lives. Sophia Richman's experience demonstrates that tragic events that surround young children can stalk in their minds like "A Wolf in the Attic".

4 out of 5 stars A Unique Perspective on the Holocaust.......2002-04-02

"A Wolf in the Attic", a memoir by Dr. Sophia Richman adds a valuable perspective to the literature of the Holocaust. Dr. Richman was a hidden child in Poland who survived to tell her story of what it meant to transcend such an ordeal and then go on to try to strive for and fit in with normal life. This work is a unique exposition of a journey to overcome a traumatic past and to engage fully in life under renewed circumstances yet with the past just under the surface. The process of coming to terms with this dicotomy is at the heart of the work and is very moving. Dr. Richman has created a compelling narrative which reveals the two faceted experience of a life of achievement and momentum amidst unconscious symbols of tragedy. The fact that the author was successful in so many ways in overcoming her trauma is an inspiration. Her story is a special one amongst Holocaust memoirs. Dr. Richman's work is highly recommended for its humanity, complexity and poignancy.
