Book Description
The untold story of the women of the English Civil War, from Queen Henrietta Maria and other titled ladies to the ordinary women like the oyster wenches of Parliamentary London who labored beside the men digging the trenches around the city.
Customer Reviews:
marvelous!.......2002-06-19
A wonderful book, brimming with the fiery personalities of women long dead. Plowden's purpose in this book is not to give an overview of the English civil war (don't buy the book if that's what you need), but to show how women participated. She does this by giving specific examples from the lives of Queen Henrietta Maria, Ann Fanshawe, Charlotte Stanley, Mary Verney, Jane Lane, Mary Banks, Brilliana Harley, Anne Fairfax, and many more. Plowden draws her information primarily from letters, many of them between husbands and wives. While her focus is on the women, she does not hesitate to bring out the strengths and weaknesses of their husbands, and she shows the warmth and devotion of these 17th century couples with an intensity that makes their relationships seem enviable.
One caution: this is a very specific book about a specific subject. If you know nothing about the English civil war, you may be a tad confused. If you're interested enough, you'll still enjoy the book, but you'll enjoy it more if you already have at least a skeletal knowledge of the history and the major players.
One weakness: the organization of the book was at first confusing. It is organized more by individual women than by chronology, although the whole is chronological (we stay with one person for a while, then jump to another, then to another, finally back to person number one). This is a trifle confusing, but I'm not sure how I'd do it differently.

Budding scientists and those entering the fascinating world of science for fun or study will find both intrigue and inspiration in these three volumes. The original 3-vol. set presented detailed biographies of 150 women and men whose theories, discoveries and inventions revolutionized science and society. From Louis Pasteur to Bill Gates and Elijah McCoy to Margaret Mead, Scientists explores the pioneers and their innovations that students most want to learn about. Vol. 4 adds 33 additional biographies (Joy Adamson, Carl Sagan and more); vol. 5 adds 34 more (Hippocrates and Fred Hoyle, among others); vol. 6 adds 34 more (including Howard Aiken, Ptolemy, and Nancy Wexler).
Scientists from around the world and from the Industrial Revolution to the present are featured in fields like astronomy, ecology, oceanography, physics and more. In Scientists, students will find:
- Scientist biographies, each focusing on the scientist's early life, formative experiences and inspirations -- details that keep students reading
- "Impact" boxes that draw out important information and sum up why each scientist's work is indeed revolutionary
- Sidebar boxes that highlight individuals who influenced the work of the featured scientist or who conducted similar research, as well as related information of special interest to students
- Sources for further reading so students know where to delve even deeper
- Black-and-white portraits and additional photographs that give students a better understanding of the people and inventions discussed
Each volume begins with a listing of scientists by field, ranging from archaeology to zoology; a timeline of major scientific breakthroughs; and a glossary of scientific terms used in the text. Volumes conclude with a cumulative subject index so that students can easily find the people, inventions and theories discussed throughout Scientists.

Big help!.......2000-10-01
This book is a great book for anyone doing a research paper on a scientist or the work of a scientist. It's not full of graphic details, but it has enough to be helpful to a student in middle school or even high school, or anyone who is interested in science.

Customer Reviews:
No brainer.......2007-06-27
This one really is a no brainer. If you are taking a Statin (cholesterol buster) you should read this book.
Very Informative.......2005-05-14
This books has lots of usefull information packed in. And is very easy to read. I bought this book to see if Q10 would be a usefull treatment for gum disease. One of the key factors that your body is low of Q10. After reading this book and using the tools I learned in there I have increased my health 10 fold. My gum disease has disapeared, I am more alert and sleep more sound. Things I didn't even think Q10 could help with. Not to mention the appearance of my skin overall. I think anyone that is looking to help increase their state of health should read this book.
Moderately useful to me..........2004-12-05
I spoke with my physician yesterday about THE COENZYME Q10 PHENOMENA and he suggested the jury is still out on this topic. He says it probably won't hurt me but, it is relatively expensive and there is no real medical evidence that it does what some purport it does. Dr. Stephen Sinatra has an entirely different take on the topic so if you want to know more his experiences with patients his book is the place to begin. Sinatra is a cardiologist, but in my experience they don't necessarily know more about high blood pressure than an doctor of internal medicine (my doctor). Apparently, the some of the chemicals that show up in blood work that can be interpreted as "you just had a heart attack" can also show up for other reasons.
Dr. Sinatra says that when you improve heart health, you also improve your overall health. He says links exist between the heart and degenerative disease such as Diabetes, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's diseases. He says in his experience if Coenzyeme Q10 is depleted from too much exercise, pollution, eating poorly, or taking drugs that interfere with it, patients have a higher incidence of radical-based degenerative diseases. Based on that, I say, that perhaps what we need to do is be careful of the kind of exercise we take, eat well, and fight for the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts.
Dr. Sinatra also suggests the Mediterranean Diet with lots of vegetables and fruits is a good place to begin if you want to improve your diet. He includes 13 pages of recipes at the end of his book.
Literally a lifesaving book........2000-09-18
Coenzyme Q10 (often abbreviated as CoQ10) is essential for human life. It catalyzes the formation and utilization of energy in every human cell. Fortunately, our bodies manufacture CoQ10. Unfortunately, some people do not manufacture enough CoQ10 to keep them healthy, especially as they grow older. Research has shown that deficiency of CoQ10 is the major cause of cardiomyopathy, and congestive heart failure and these diseases can often be cured by CoQ10 supplementation. Even many heart transplant candidates have no longer needed a heart transplant after supplementation with CoQ10. Now it has been found that CoQ10 can also prevent -- and, sometimes, even cure -- cancer, as well a variety of other diseases. Dr. Stephen Sinatra -- a board-certified cardiologist -- is a world-renowned expert on CoQ10 and its health benefits. I beg your to buy and read this book and heed Dr. Sinatra's information and advice.
Aging? Try Co-Q 10.......2000-07-26
Again Sinatra has written an easily understood book. This one explains the body's need for additional enzymes to battle the effects that living in this busy, modern (and polluted) world. Co-Q 10 works with our immune system to rejuvinate our tissues. My father has been taking this enzyeme for his heart and is seeing improvement. It is becoming better known and discussed in the herbal/natural medicine circles. He buys his from a site, PapaNature, where he has had good service, additional information and other natural "medicines" as well. In fact, Sinatra's book is referred to there too.

"I learned early and well that the hand of the seasonal cook is the link between the good earth and family." Growing up on a family farm in Brittany, Monique Jamet Hooker witnessed both the changing seasons and the changing menus that accompanied them: Asparagus with Roasted Garlic and Ham in April, Scaloppine with Chanterelles in September, and Poached Cod with Saffron Sauce to keep out the chill of December. In Cooking with the Seasons, Hooker passes on the lessons--both the wisdom and the recipes--she learned at her mother's table.
Organized by months, each chapter includes a menu for a special occasion--Easter dinner in April or a bridal dinner in June--in addition to many other recipes calling for ingredients that are readily available at the particular times of year. Woven throughout the seasons are photographs of Hooker's family, headnotes and recollections of the simple pleasures she has experienced in every season of the year. Cooking with the Seasons is a book you'll find yourself coming back to over the years as you build your own trove of memorable seasonal meals.
Customer Reviews:
I LOVE IT.......2000-05-23
I find this cookbook to be wonderfully readable, whether for cooking or for curling up by the fireplace to read on a Sunday afternoon. I am not a very experienced French cook, I am just learning. However, I visited France for a period of time, staying with a French family. I find the recipes here to be much the same as the home cooking I recieved while in France. It may not be fancy Parisian fare with elaborate sauces, but it is not intended to be that. It seems to be written as a book for French (Brittany to be specific) country home cooking. True French cusine focuses on the freshest local ingrediants available, beautifully prepared, and that is just what is in this book.
French Style Cooking For Everyday.......2000-02-16
Cooking With the Seasons is an excellent book filled with delicious recipes as well as snippets of the author's memories of growing up in France. The variations listed at the end of most recipes give the everyday cook the opportunity to adapt to what is on hand. Monique's tips, which are scattered throughout the book, are useful bits of information to aid the cook with common delimmas.
I was disappointed to learn that the recipes had already been adapted to what is available in America. This is useful to those who live in the US, but to those of us anticipating a move to France or those who wish to create a truly authentic French dish, it is less than ideal.
Nevertheless, it is a beautifully done book with wonderful recipes, delightful memories, and great tips. It is a book that deserves a place of honor in any cook's kitchen.
An Everyday French Cookbook.......2000-01-27
A lovely book with charming snippets of memories from the author's childhood in France, this cookbook takes you through a year, month by month, using the ingredients in season and readily available to create wonderful, everyday meals. The recipes are well written, and offer tips for variations and substitutions. A feature I found very useful was "Monique's Tips". They offer practical answers for kitchen delimmas.
I was disappointed in the fact that the recipes were adapted to suit the ingredients most commonly found in the United States, rather than those found in France. This makes it great for creating dishes with a French flair in the States, but makes it less useful for someone who plans to use it as a cornerstone cookbook when moving to France.
All in all, this is a cookbook worth buying. The lessons Monique Hooker teaches about using what is on hand and experimenting with herbs and spices are just as useful in any country, with any style of cooking. Add to this the memories of childhood in France, and you have a book you will return to again and again.

Origami is a popular pastime for people of all ages and skill levels and provides fun for everyone. Now it's possible to have an endless supply of origami paper on hand! This paper is 8 1/2 inches square--the perfect size for young inexperienced fingers, or for creating large-size projects, such as doll hats and cups. Also good for trying more intricate projects where the larger scale helps to see subtle folds.
* 48 sheets of solid-quality paper in 8 bright, solid colors, plus gold foil
* 8-page booklet with 6 projects to begin folding right away
Customer Reviews:
Folding paper, in 8 colors with gold foil piece. 40 sheets........2000-06-30
You can make your own folding paper. Simply fold any sheet of paper diagonally, making a triangle. Do not crease the fold line. If the sides match where the paper meets, you have a square. If not, cut off excess paper, so that you have a perfect square. When I was a kid, I would even use newspaper and paper bags to make my own folding paper. 4 to 6 inch squares are the usual size used in classes. These sheets are bigger. 40 sheets, 8 colors (on one side, reverse side white) and a gold sheet. I haven't used it yet, but at least you can now figure out what you are buying.
Interesting Book.......2000-05-18
This is a very good book and is very explicative all the technics about origamic art.

Customer Reviews:
No other book on Crohn's or UC can even compare-INFORMATIVE.......1999-07-02
This is truly the book to have if your child has Crohn's. I wish that this book would have available when this whole ordeal started with my daughter (then 10 years old). It truly explains soooooo many things, In a nut shell this is the book to have, initially it may even give you more information then you are prepared to handle, but when you're ready, the information is there for your reading and using. A MUST HAVE BOOK!!
Excellent Guide to Crohn's and colitis for Parents.......1999-06-11
Every parent of a child with Crohn's or UC should have a copy of this indispensible guide. This book, recently published in coordination with the CCFA, is the first dedicated solely to the needs of children and teens with IBD and their families. It is separated into three sections: diagnosis, treatment, and living with the disorder. It contains a glossary of medical terms, a resources section, and a number of positive statements from children with IBD. Highly recommended for parents!
This book was exactly what our family needed at diagnosis........1999-03-22
This book was given to us when our daughter, age 10, was diagnosed with Crohns summer of '98. Her Doctor gave it to us on our first visit. I strongly suggest any parent in this similar situation needs this book. My head was spinning I had questions, at least I thought I did, I was confussed. This book helped me get a handle on what was going on, what treatments were presently available, and how we would survive and move on. I just can't say enough about this book. It is really reader friendly and that is important when you are in a new situation like this.

Excellent Truth- telling Story.......2006-11-09
This book is great! Although the conditions of the Jews were horrible, I enjoyed reading this remarkable story. It is more like three stories, becuse three young survivers each tell about their time in Auchwitz. Their names are Rachel, Frieda, and Tola. I enjoyed this historic book and you will, too!
Excellent!.......2002-04-12
This is a great book! I read it for the first time about a year ago, and it is still one of my favorite books! It is very helpful for school projects!
Digs Deep!.......2000-12-08
Kinderlager was a great book. It dipped into all the senses. In the book the feelings of three different people were expressed in three different books. The books were all about the time they spent in the Holocaust. In some way or another they all met up with each other in the labor camps. The book explains these peoples' experiences and grieving in great detail. The reason why I liked this book so much was because it was real. Just knowing those people really lived through those harsh conditions... it made the book more effective. I recommend this book to anyone don't miss out on the chance to read it!
3 Stories Written For All Ages........2000-10-26
This book is one of the few such non-fiction works thataccomplishes several goals while still reaching an audience that, inmy opinion, spans in age from the old to the very young. The graphicaccounts and descriptions may seem too harsh at first for youngreaders, however, the subtle tone and easy language turns a tragicstory into a recognizable tale of pain, perseverance, and ultimatestrength. I've been around these stories my whole life, and though Ifound it very hard as a child to read such accounts, I would recommendusing this book as a tool to teach children about the past so they canbetter direct their future...I hope you read my mother's story andhelp your children understand what happened, what can happen, and whatshould never happen again.
Book was an awards finalist........1999-05-17
This book was a finalist for the 1999 Society of Midland Authors Annual Book Awards contest in the category of children's nonfiction.
