Get the whole series!.......2006-05-15
I've read a lot of books on herbalism, but this series of books is a unique and extremely valuable find. Dale Pendell covers a wide variety of herbs and their affects on the human mind, body and spirit. What makes his book different from others is the poetic way in which he conveys his information. It makes reading the books far from dull or dry, and some herbal books read like medical textbooks in that sense. The authors brilliance, wisdom and sheer depth and bredth of knowledge shines through in this series, and I can't think of any other books that cover the "poisonous" herbs and substances in such a way. Read Pharmako/Poeia and you will probably want to buy Pharmako/Dynamis and Pharmako/Gnosis. They are all valuable to the herbalist, folklorist, entheobotanist, or anyone who just wants to know about the uses and side effects of various plants that are often stigmatized in our culture. Subjects range from:
Opium
Marjuana
Alcohol (beer, wine, distilled spirits)
Absinthe
Salvia
Tobacco
Nitrous
Kava Kava
And even, fossil fuel.
But don't think that he advocates the use (or abuse) of all these plants. He gives you the information, what they do, their history, and side effects. You will find no propaganda or scare tactics, just the truth (and the truth of what some of these plants can do is scary enough without embellishment!)
Another plus of these books: They're aesthetically pleasing. I honestly can't think of any problems with this series of books: Informative, accurate and beautiful. Dale Pendell is an asset to the herbalist community.
A Joyous Journey.......2005-09-10
I was sorry to reach the last page of this mind altering, funny, informative and absolutely joyous book. Hadn't had this much fun reading a book since I read Milky Way Marmalade! Should be required reading for every parent, teen and politician.
I just discovered Dale Pendell has a 2nd book Pharmako/Dynamis and have already ordered it!
The Poison Path and Kindred Spirits.......2005-01-03
"Finally" is the word that succinctly describes how I feel about this book. Every page, I mean, practically every line, contains wit, humor, insight, and wisdom all written with the utmost eloquence. Pendell's breadth of knowledge in his not-so-small area of expertise is simply awesome, in the true sense of the word. This way is not for all, however, and the type of person attracted to Pendell's work, as he puts it himself, is probably eccentric. What makes perfect sense to me is scoffed at by my friends. So I keep things to myself more often, the views and practices found in this book not being an exception. This is a volume full of ancient herbal lore and methodology (but not just confined to that), it is exceedingly fun to read, and I couldn't love it more. I've got volume 2 on the way, and as another reviewer has already mentioned, Mercury House is sluggish when it comes to releasing these books. Volume 3, which for me is going to be the most interesting, was due to be released August/September 04 and now that date has been pushed back to August/September 05, and I do hope that it doesn't take any longer than that.
Wonderful overview of medicinal plants...........2003-04-06
PHARMAKO-DYNAMIS and PHARMAKO-POEIA by Dale Pendell contain much of interest to gardeners, artists, historians, drug counselors, and drug users. Pendell suggests that how a plant substance is defined (poison, drug, medicine) depends on the dosage, length of use, and intent of the user. In other words, if plant-based drugs are "abused" the problem lies not in our plants but in our selves. He says the reader can begin anywhere in either of his two books and arrive at the same place. I read PHARMAKO-POEIA last, not because it isn't interesting, but because coffee, tea, and cocao are covered in DYNAMIS. As a tea drinker, I wanted to find out more about my herb of choice before I ventured onto others.
POEIA includes a wonderful section on Absinthe which may be related to the seduction of angels. Students of 19th Century French art history and the Belle Epoch know about Absinthe. Absinthe is that lovely green substance the Impressionist painters liked to portray, which according to some was the devil's own drink (he being a fallen angel). Wilde was fond of Absinthe, and may have been using it when he wrote "The Portrait of Dorian Grey." On the other hand, it may have been his drug of choice when he developed his witty and amusing stage plays. Readers associated with Lewis' Screwtape Letters will recognize Absinthe's plant name-Wormwood. Wormwood was probably the bitter herb offered Christ in his last hour of agony and Revelations 8:10,11 has something to say about it. Artemisia is Wormwood's proper name, and the Greek Artemisia is the Roman Diana, Goddess of the Moon. Pendell says Oberon uses `Dian's bud' to reverse the effects of a love potion in A Midsummer Night's Dream. What was Shakespeare thinking??
Besides Artemisia and Valerian, Pendell discusses a few other suspect plants I grow in my own garden, such as Papaver, the Opium Poppy. Oh the feds tried to ban it once, but all the little old ladies came after them and Poppy reigns supreme in American cottage gardens. According to Pendell, the worldwide persecution of the Poppy plant continues even though Poppy plants (and Cannabis) have killed far fewer people than tobacco plants. This is wonderful wise book for crafty gardeners and their friends.
Excellent!!.......2002-03-18
I am an herbalist, and I found this book by Pendell and Snyder to be full of information that was presented in a fascinating way. Interestingly, finding information about herbal poisons isn't as easy as it might seem, but is still important. I can honestly say I learned a few things from this book that I did not realize, particularly from a historical standpoint! I can't wait to get my hands on the other two volumes as soon as they become available - however I have been waiting for almost a year for the promised second and third volumes of the book. I am hoping that the publisher or author can give us a firmer lead time for their final release.
Customer Reviews:
Too repetitive.......2003-02-21
While this book may have had some good recipes, the style of presenting them made me crazy. Every single recipe contained the same paragraphs telling the reader how to thaw the chicken and trim it of fat, etc.
Many recipes repeated the directions for how to cook the chicken (for recipes requiring cooked chicken) and that was also very tiresome. I think that the author must have needed to make the book longer and that is why she repeated all of these directions.
Sometimes there were 4-5 paragraphs following the list of ingredients and only one was not "boilerplate". Even the most novice of cooks does not need to have this information repeated over and over.
Simple and delicious.......2001-11-13
Marge Poore's Complete Chicken Breast Cookbook is the #1 dinner idea and cookbook at our house. I've bought copies for both my sons to use at their homes and they agree. This book should not go out of print!

Good book for selecting old roses.......2003-09-26
This little book (paperbound and measuring only 8"x5") is a very good tool for selecting old roses for your garden. The author is from England so you might want to consult other books to see if a particular rose will grow well in your region. However, the advice this author gives is highly worthwhile. He covers over 200 roses (arranged as "Bush" roses and "Climbing" roses) and devotes 2 lengthy paragraphs to each one. The descriptions are poetic and the author also suggests ways of using the rose in the garden (color schemes, etc.) Lists are included at the back of the book which notes roses by categories (colors, good foliage, shade, small gardens, scent, informal gardens, structures). Hardiness zone maps cover both the U.S. and Europe. The photographs are excellent and are mainly close-ups (although there are outstanding full garden shot photos in the introductory chapters).

!*!*!Amazing!*!*! .......2007-10-16
In the small town of Hrubieszow Poland, two lovers Meyer and Manya attempt to escape to terrible hands of the German Nazi Soldiers. When many atempts to escape fail, both lovers suffer deportation, seperation, and close-to-death situations. Going to camps such as Flossenburg and Aushwits both Manya and Meyer struggle to hold on, but at the same time rely on one day being together back in Hrubieszow. When both of them believe they will never be reunited with they're families after the war has ended, Meyer and Manya's son Michael Korenblit finds out some informations on his mothers family while making this book.
This book is the most amazing, Holocaust book I have ever read. There is not one book that has takin my breath away or have drawn tears to my eyes such as this one has. Imagine having nothing to hold on to, Do you think Manya and Meyer would have survived without one another? As hard as it got, thoughts of being with eachother kept Meyer and Manya still holding on. I recomend this book to anyone, because out there there really is a God and if you ever loose everything, faith is one thing you cant loose.
Love carried them home.......2007-06-24
I'll admit that this book started out a little slowly for me, but by about chapter 18, I began to be drawn more and more into the story of teenage sweethearts Manya and Meyer, Manya's little brother Chaim, and their friends (even though the writing style employed wasn't always that dramatic or riveting). The story begins when Manya and one of her brothers, Chaim, make the very difficult decision to leave their family in the hiding place in the wall of their house in the ghetto of Hrubieszow to join Meyer's family hiding in a haystack, in 1942. Perhaps I would have been more drawn into the story initially had it begun earlier on and slowly introduced the characters and situation, instead of starting off rather in media res. And perhaps the events might have come even more alive for me had the book been written in the first person instead of by two secondhand parties. It also kind of kills the dramatic surprise by revealing at the beginning that Chaim was discovered in early 1982, with the reader knowing all along he survived instead of only saving it for the epilogue, when it would have had far greater dramatic effect.
All that said, however, the book does a rather good job at conveying the increasingly trapped and horrific situation the characters found themselves in. Many of the decisions they made, and breaks from outsiders they got which ended up contributing to their eventual survival, could be attributed to only luck, since many other people in similar situations might have had far different fates for making or not making those same decisions. After leaving the haystack, Manya, Meyer, and Chaim returned to the new ghetto in Hrubieszow, where they were put to "legitimate" work, though always in constant danger of brutality and deportations. Sometime in 1943 (the book isn't very good at all about giving a specific timeline of when exactly a lot of this stuff happened), Chaim was taken, and then a bit later on Manya, Meyer, and a few of their friends were deported as well. Initially the young lovers were in the same camp, but were eventually separated, promising to meet again in Hrubieszow at the end of the war. The two of them went through a seemingly endless stream of camps over the next two years, suffering bestial treatments and conditions, but got through with a little help from their friends, and, most importantly, their love for one another. Under such intense times, what would have been just a routine teenage romance in ordinary time turned into something much more serious, emotions magnified as people turned and clung to those they already had a powerful connection to, nurturing and keeping alive the one remaining thing that they still knew for sure, that kept them sane, human, hopeful, normal. It seems amazing to people living in comfort in the present day that love could have survived and even flourished under such awful inhuman conditions, but after reading a powerful story such as this one, it doesn't seem like a surprising phenomenon at all.
Essential to understanding our history and how love prevails.......2006-12-27
I think this is an incredible book and I don't think the Editorial Review does it any justice. The Editorial Reviewer understood that the story was incredibly moving and wanted it to be written more fairy tale-like, however it is not any fantasy-like because it is and was SO REAL and I think Korenblit perfectly captures its highly-emotive atmosphere. I suggest this as a read not only for historical information about the Holocaust but as an overall life-lesson that love can make you strong and that among all evil there will always be some good.
EVERY person on earth should read this book!.......2006-10-02
I met M. Kornblit, received his book, and read it in two days! It caused me to be thankful for every minute I live in a peaceful country, every morsel of food I partake, every single material thing I have...It is truly the most unforgettable book I'll ever read.
A Story of Real, Enduring Love .......2006-08-19
I had the the privilege of meeting Mr. Michael Korneblit during a recent book signing at the Holocaust Museum in DC. He personally shared what the book is about, then apologized for "making me cry". I could not wait to read the book! Let me admit that I am an audible learner and not an avid reader, but this book is a turning point. It is easy to read and definitely holds one's interest. The authors wisely chose, in this case, to focus on the love story more than the atrocities of the holocaust -- yet certainly get the point across. This is a lovely story about commitment and integrity tested to the limits. God bless these families and all survivors or relatives of those lost. Thank you for this book.

A beautiful memoir of surviving the Holocaust.......2006-05-11
Until We Meet Again is written by the son of two Holocaust survivors. As he grew up his parents didn't discuss their experience with him because they perceived he didn't want to hear about it, while he didn't bring it up because he was afraid they didn't want to talk about it. The writing of the book was cathartic for all three of them.
It is the true story of the miraculous survival of two Polish Jews who were boyfriend and girlfriend. Although they start off in the same hiding spot and move on to the same ghetto they eventually become separated and spend time in many different concentration camps, sometimes the same ones but never at the same time. Their love for each other is the thread to which they cling throughout the grueling years of captivity. It is a wonderfully uplifting tale of hope and love.
I did not give it 5 stars simply because there are some even better books available: Shindler's List comes to mind. The writing gets a tiny bit repetitive at times, however they are conveying an experience which involved endless days of repetition so perhaps that is natural. I recommend the book highly.
UNTIL WE MEET AGIAN.......2005-11-19
UNTILL WE MEET AGAIN
I am writing about the book, Until We Meet Again. This book is written by two people, Michael KorenBlit and Kathleen Jager. This is a true story about the Holocaust.
This story includes both love and the hope to survival. In the beginning, the Korenblit family goes in to hiding in a hidden shelter under a haystack. They feared after a few months they weren't safe and decided to move out. They temporally stayed in a family friend's home
Later Meyer the third oldest out of six, hear German soldiers asking Jews to come out of hiding to come and work for them. Meyer takes up there offer and goes to work doing various jobs and lives very well. He also takes his girlfriend with him that was hiding with him in the hideout. After the Germans were finished with the Jews and no longer needed them they were shipped off to concentration camps. They later were transported to other camps across Europe.
This was the best book I have ever read. I really liked it a lot. The book had suspense, action and danger luring behind every corner. As you read on in the story, you will experience the pain and suffering of the Jews and how they overcame the Nazis and did the last thing they wanted for the Jews.... to live. My favorite parts of the story was when Manya, (Meyer's girlfriend), and her friends ran away from being deported and they dodged all of the bullets and hide under the barracks. I also liked this book because I like to read many books, and war books. Even the title tells you a lot about what is going to happen, because you know someone is going to get separated from someone else. This book shows many good examples of how the Holocaust affected us today. This book is overall extremely good
