AA's Godparents: Three Early Influences on Alcoholics Anonymous and Its Foundation ..........2005-10-04
I really like this little book and I especially enjoy the letters between Bill Wilson and Dr. Carl Jung. This book contains very valuable information for anyone interested in some of the early influences on Alcoholics Anonymous and its foundation. There are many 12-step recovery groups based upon the AA model and this little book can provide insight to those group members also.
Interesting History of the Program.......1998-06-30
There is some very interesting reading here that gives some details into the founding of the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. All three of the men mentioned in the title have very signifigant roles in the development of this program. If you are finding yourself interested in the history of the program, this is definitely something you should read.

Preschool Circle Time.......2003-11-08
I am a preschool teacher and found this story in a box of my husband's old books. When reading it, the kids love to join in and say 'goodbye' and 'I can...flop!'. Its the only story so far that has gotten all of my kids to sit and listen in circle time at school! The 4 year-olds give this a thumbs up!
Move over, Dr. Seuss!.......2003-06-05
This charming book sends my two- and four-year-olds into hysterics every time we read it. A little monkey (Minnie) attempts to fly to no avail, and continues to get bad advice from his winged friends. It really tickles the little ones' funny bones every time Minnie flops instead of flying. I can't believe it wasn't written by Seuss--the text is just as tight and well-rhymed as his books.
I finally found IT!.......2002-07-23
I read this when I was a 7 year old child in the 70s... I have looked a lot of places (libraries, stores, etc.) for the past ten years to no avail...
This book is a wonderful example of what good friends are like. I got teary eyed when I told my wife about the story. I definitley plan on purchasing this for my children.
Why Can't I Fly.......2001-05-26
I liked when the monkey said "I can fly, I can fly". He didn't have any wings so he couldn't fly. I liked when he can't fly, he flopped. I liked the book. It was good!
Why Can't I Fly?.......2001-05-17
My book that I'm reading is Why Can't I Fly? The book is about birds trying to help Minnie the Monkey fly. At the end Minnie tried one more time. Then the birds quickly got a blanket so Minnie could land in it. Minnie landed in it. Then she said I can fly! Minnie said goodbye. I will give the book three stars.

Description:
Based on a meta-analytical review of experimental results presented in the scientific literature, the objective of this study was to quantify the short-term growth responses (periodic basal area growth (@DBA; m^2/ha/decade), periodic total volume growth (@DTV; m^3/ha/decade) and periodic merchantable volume growth (@DMV; m^3/ha/decade)) of semi-mature black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) stands to nitrogen-based fertilization treatments (one-time dosages of nitrogen (N), N and phosphorus (P), N and potassium (K), and NPK). Specifically, five fertilization treatments were assessed: (1) [84@?kgNha^-^1
<140] denoted N; (2) [196@?kgNha^-^1
<252] denoted 2N; (3) [196@?kgNha^-^1
<252]+[84@?kgPha^-^1
<140] denoted 2NP; (4) [196@?kgNha^-^1
<252]+[84@?kgKha^-^1
<140] denoted 2NK; (5) [196@?kgNha^-^1
<252]+[84@?kgPha^-^1
<140]+[84@?kgKha^-^1
<140] denoted 2NPK. Analytically, the procedure consisted of three sequential steps: (1) identifying relevant fertilization studies via a systematic search of the scientific literature and associated electronic databases; (2) obtaining and critically reviewing the identified publications for their specific applicability in terms of species, experimental approach, treatments applied, growth parameters measured, and duration of response; (3) determining the mean percent change in periodic growth of the fertilized stands relative to comparable unfertilized control stands by growth parameter, treatment, site quality class and species, employing regression analyses. In total, 112 and 161 fertilized-control observational growth response pairs were derived from 24 black spruce and 37 jack pine experimental installations, respectively. Results indicated that among the 30 black spruce relationships assessed (3 response variatesx5 treatmentsx2 site quality classes), black spruce stands situated on (1) good and excellent quality sites exhibited significant (p@?0.05) and consistent positive responses (concurrent increases in all three growth measures) to N and 2NP treatments (i.e. mean increases of 22.6% in @DBA, 16.9% in @DTV and 17.9% in @DMV); (2) poor and medium quality sites exhibited largely insignificant and (or) inconsistent responses to fertilization (i.e. a significant (p@?0.05) mean increase of 12.6% in @DBA to the 2N and 2NPK treatments (p@?0.05) only). Among the 45 jack pine relationships assessed (3 response variablesx5 treatmentsx3 site quality classes), jack pine stands situated on (1) good quality sites exhibited significant (p@?0.05) and consistent responses to all five treatments (i.e. mean increases of 17.3% in @DBA, 15.4% in @DTV and 14.5% in @DMV); (2) medium quality sites responded significantly (p@?0.05) and consistently to N, 2N, 2NK and 2NPK treatments (i.e. mean increases of 28.3% in @DBA, 22.1% in @DTV and 22.7% in @DMV); (3) poor quality sites exhibited significant (p@?0.05) and consistent responses to 2NK and 2NPK treatments (i.e. mean increases of 23.5% in @DBA, 19.5% in @DTV and 19.5% in @DMV). The delineation and selection of a single optimal treatment for a given site quality class was not possible given insignificant (p>0.05) differences among the various treatments that exhibited significant (p@?0.05) mean responses. The overall result of this review suggests that short-term productivity of black spruce stands situated on good and excellent sites and jack pine stands situated on good, medium and poor sites, could be enhanced during the later stages of stand development through N-based fertilization treatments.

THIS BOOK HAS GREAT RECIPES FOR EVERY TYPE OF POTATO DISH YOU WANT TO MAKE. IT'S DIVIDED UP BY DIFFERENT CLASSES, LIKE "THE CLASSICS" WHICH HAS RECIPES FROM "CLASSIC" POTATO DISHES. EACH SECTION HAS SOME TRADITIONAL AND SOME DIFFERENT RECIPES FOR EVERYONE'S FAVORITE TUBER. CHECK OUT THE OTHER WILLIAMS-SONOMA COOKBOOKS AS WELL. ALL ARE GREAT IN MY OPINION.
Excellent Variety of Recipes.......2003-07-13
Let's face it, in America potatos are a traditional sidedish. This book actually teaches you how to use them to make everything from the simplest to most elegant dishes in an easy-to-follow fashion. I actually consider this to be one of my favorites in the collection because it does not require as many specialty ingredients as the other books.
The BEST potato cookbook!.......2003-04-25
We first checked this book out from the library, but soon it was apparent that no one in our family was going to let it be returned, so here I am to buy it!
Every recipe we have made has been wonderful. Many family favorites are contained here. And our favorite part? Pictures for EVERY recipe!

"Though good Italian cooking should be rooted in strong regional traditions," Biba Caggiano writes in her introduction to Italy al Dente, "I also believe that one should not follow rules slavishly because ... food adapts itself to new modes.... Flexibility in the kitchen is essential, the quality of ingredients is everything, and simplicity of execution is a must. Another important prerequisite of the Italian cook is fantasia, or imagination and creativity."
One might view this book, then, as a guide to Italian fantasia, Biba style. Start with brodo, or broth, and move right along to Bean, Cabbage, and Rice Soup. Or Barley and Porcini Mushroom Soup. Biba Caggiano has been in the Italian food game long enough that she is determined to come up with special treats for her old fans and new followers alike.
Both elegance and simplicity lace their ways through this cookbook as it addresses Italian foods found most often at the front end of the meal: soups, pasta, risotto and rice dishes, gnocchi, and polenta. Biba is determined to take the reader right to the heart and soul of Italian cooking. Risotto with Duck Ragu? Case closed. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
Pasta, polenta, gnocchi, risotto, soup--these are the heart and soul of Italian cooking. Simple, hearty, and filling, these dishes can satisfy any craving, any time.
Do you like pasta? Biba gives you pasta--three chapters of pasta, eighty-seven recipes in all. Prefer your pasta stuffed? How about Eggplant-Goat Cheese Tortelli with Fresh Tomatoes and Black Olives or Spinach Cannelloni with Duck and Wild Mushroom Stuffing? Want to try a new spin on lasagne? Lasagne with Walnut Pesto and Ricotta might be just the thing. If you like to keep it simple, Biba can feed your hunger with inspired but quick-to-the-table recipes like Spaghetti with Hot Anchovy Sauce or Pasta with Spicy Broccoli.
Polenta and gnocchi are the quintessential Italian comfort foods and Biba's hearty recipes serve up satisfaction and surprising variety--Potato Gnocchi with Osso Buco Sauce; Saffron Gnocchi with Mushrooms, Prosciutto, Asparagus, and Cream Sauce; Polenta with Fontina, Butter, and Sage; and Soft Polenta with Pancetta, Garlic, and Hot Pepper, to name only a few.
Risotto and soup--what better choices can one have on a cold, wet evening? Whatever you're in the mood for--or have on hand--there's a risotto to fit the bill. Savor Risotto of the Fisherman; Risotto with Roasted Butternut Squash; Risotto with Three Cheeses; or Risotto with Sausage, Beans, and Red Wine. And soup lovers will delight in what Biba has to offer--from thick vegetable minestre like Tuscan Chick-pea and Pasta Soup and Artichoke, Leek, and Rice Soup to lighter fare like Angel Hair in Broth.
Italy at Dente keeps the flavors direct and the recipes simple. If you like Italian, this is a cookbook for the kitchen counter.
Italy al Dente is Italian food that is "just right." There singular recipes are perfectly on target -- precisely the food we want to eat every day, day after day: the simply perfect pasta, flavor-filled gnocchi, hearty soups, steaming risottos, and comforting polenta -- the tastes we crave when we think Italian.
Legions of Biba admirers -- who have brought hundreds of thousands of copies of her cookbooks -- know that no one hits this high note quite as well as she does. Recipe after recipe, each is a peak moment, with dishes like Simmer Spaghetti with Uncooked Tomato Sauce Squash-Eggplant Tortellini with Butter and Sage, Ricotta Gnocchi with Walnuts and Gorgonzola, Barley and Porcini Mushroom Soup, Soft Polenta with Bolognese Meat Sauce, and Risotto with Roasted Butternut Squash. This is simple cooking at its best.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Book for Pasta Lovers.......2001-03-22
IF you love pasta, you MUST have this book. I have made so many of the dishes in it and everyone loves them! Instructions are very easy to follow too!
Another Great From Biba.......2000-02-25
This book is definately one any Italian cook should have in their reference library. As the owner of over one hundred Italian cookbooks myself, this book is one I often find myself using. There is a great mix of recipes, both traditional and those with a contmporary twist, but all the recipes I've tried have been superb. As the Italian Cooking Host @ Bella Online, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Italian cuisine.
Another Wonderful Book By Biba!.......1999-12-08
Another WONDERFUL Book by Biba!
The Queen of Italian Cuisine! She has written a beautiful book with easy recipies and beautiful pictures...Not quite as good as her others but is a strong contender...
Biba turns out some of the best books and recipes around........1999-10-17
I have lost track of the various recipes of hers I have tried...all were a success. The directions are clear, and easy to follow. The recipes are just like "homemade". Make one of her dishes and your back in "momma's kitchen". I would recommend her books to anyone who wants to learn what Italian cooking is all about. If you have been fortunate enough to see any of her cooking programs on TV - she is an absolute delight. No nonsense - gets to the heart of matter and makes you want to run into your kitchen and start whipping up whatever she happens to be making. Mangia...Mangia!!!!!
Biba writes from her soul and cooks from her heart........1998-11-04
I have been following Biba Caggiano's work for the past 15 or more years and she still amazes me. Her cookbooks are always the best for Italian Food I have ever found. She seems to find recipies that always work and come out the way they should. Her cooking show on TLC was as good as her books and is dearly missed. If anyone get's a chance to visit her restaurant in Sacramento, California please do so... Probably the best Italian Restaurant in the USA..From her first cookbook to her most recent they are books that need to be in every kitchen..I would not want to be in the kitchen cooking without my friend Biba!!!!
Book Description
Tracking Dinosaurs is the first non-technical, popular science book on dinosaur footprints and what they reveal about dinosaurs and their habitats. Billions of dinosaur tracks have been found in recent years and through careful examination of these prehistoric clues, dinosaur trackers have discovered much about how and where dinosaurs lived. This book deals with this landslide of new information that has accumulated in recent decades, demonstrating that fossil footprints are neither rare nor insignificant as previously supposed. A complete guide to dinosaur tracking, the book begins with a discussion of the meaning of tracks, how tracks provide information about dinosaur locomotion, behaviour, ecology and environmental impact. Next, the author describes how dinosaur trackers find and preserve these fossil footprints. This is followed by a detailed description of where to find dinosaur tracks. Popular myths and misconceptions are reviewed and in many cases dispelled, leading to a new perspective on how tracks improve our understanding of dinosaurs. Did brontosaurs really swim? Did dinosaurs travel in structured herds? These questions and many more are discussed in an easy and straightforward style. Dinosaur enthusiasts will be fascinated by what is revealed in these pages, as will geologists and biologists with an interest in paleontology. The accessible writing style and numerous illustrations, including eight pages of colour photogtraphs, make this book appropriate for all people with a general interest in science and natural history.

Book Description
Make your wedding day even more special with handcrafted accessories and personal touches that guests will remember long after they've thrown the last handful of rice. More than fifty handcrafted projects are presented here, from stationery and invitations to accessories for the bridal party, table decorations and floral arrangements to favor bags no one will want to leave behind. The projects are divided into three main themes: Country Lanes, which bring the freshness and sunlight of the outdoors in; Color Brights, an explosion of festive hues that will add pizzazz to any event; and Vintage Whites, a cool and classic look that harkens back to times gone by. Hundreds of color photographs show the finished items, but you may wish to use the ideas included here as a jumping off point, because each and every project can be easily customized to make your wedding day unique.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiration for grownup bride who wants something special.......2005-04-11
I don't think there's an inch of tulle in any of the projects in this book. If you're really looking for "101 uses for tulle and gold ribbon," this is probably *not* the book you want.
The book is visually gorgeous, and the three wedding "themes" that are explored have a simple, somewhat eclectic, elegence to them. If you are the sort of person who likes antique shops, flea markets, Asian groceries, and gramma's attic, you will probably swoon. A little "Martha"-esque, only more personal and intimate.
I especially like the idea of incorporating texts into the design elements. Many projects use color photocopies of old letters, maps, and rebus-like cut-out letters that spell messages like "cherish."
I think this book will be a great resource if you are looking to create a wedding that has a a unique artistic sensibility.
For the Artistic Bride.......2004-06-19
When my daughter was preparing for her wedding last year, our crafty family was determined to do as much as possible with our own hands. This inspiring book helped us achieve that goal.
The book includes three "stories": Country Lanes, Color Brights, and Antique Whites. Each has associated stationery, decorations, flowers, candles, favors, gifts, photography, and accessories.
There are instructions for many of the projects, and all can be accomplished within reasonable time and budget constraints, by people with average crafting skills.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
OK--but not so great for older onset alzheimers.......2007-04-20
My mother is nearly 90. She's just beginning to develop Alzheimer's. This book would be good for those whose loved ones develop Alzheimer's at an earlier age, but I didn't find it very helpful.
36 Hours.......2007-01-25
Have not finidhed thid publication but have covered approz 125 pages. The info conveyed is excellent and has caused me to modify my approach to my wifs's condition. Unfortunately she has several other probems that complicate the situation. Rgardless this bookis vey helpful so far and I expect the balance to be the same.
Excellent Resource.......2006-12-02
Many books have been written about Alzheimer's disease. However this book gives the reader an easy to understand yet thorough explanation of what a family or caregiver should do when someone (s)he loves or works for has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
Susan Berg is the author of "Adorable Photographs of Our Baby, Meaningful Mind Stimulating, Activities and More for the Memory Challenged, Their Loved Ones and Involved Professionals".
Alzheimers Early Stages.......2005-09-17
A really informative book that points you in the right direction as far as finances, estate planning etc. I would recommend this book to family members who are caring for someone with this condition.
a godsend.......2005-06-07
I know my family is going to benefit so much from this book. It has what we are looking for -- all types of basic information, about the disease itself and practical caregiving information, presented in a very calming manner. We are in the tricky situation of the affected family member's refusal to go to a doctor, so we don't even have a professional as a guide through this situation....not yet anyway. It is great to have Mr. Kuhn's experience and depth of knowledge, in an easy-to-read and comprehensive guide.
Book Description
Jack Kerouac is best known through the image he put forth in his autobiographical novels. Yet it is only his private journals, in which he set down the raw material of his life and thinking, that reveal to us the real Kerouac. In Windblown World, distinguished Americanist Douglas Brinkley has gathered a selection of journal entries from the most pivotal period of Kerouac's life, 1947 to 1954. Here is Kerouac as a hungry young writer finishing his first novel while forging crucial friendships with Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, and Neal Cassady. Truly a self-portrait of the artist as a young man, this unique and indispensable volume is sure to become an integral element of the Beat oeuvre.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing publication after grandiose promises.......2006-09-09
Kerouac began keeping journals in 1936, and continued for the rest of his life. The journals survive and editor Brinkley, writing in The Atlantic Monthly in 1998, promised us publication of "a multi-volume edition." Now it seems that all we will be getting is this 370-page book, covering only some of the material from the years 1947 to 1950, and with just a few pages from 1954 thrown in as extra.
The parts that have been selected for inclusion are apparently aimed at demonstrating the development of Kerouac's first two major works, The Town & the City, and On the Road. Strange, then, that nothing from Kerouac's 1948-49 journal of work on the latter book is included, although some of it did appear as a taster in the extracts Brinkley selected for publication in The Atlantic Monthly in 1998. That must surely be one of the most relevant journals for those interested in the development of On the Road and its omission here is a mystery. (Note: Although not in the hardback edition, Kerouac's On the Road journal has been added as a "postscript" to the paperback edition of this book.) Other journal extracts published in Atlantic, and also in the New Yorker in 1998, are missing from the published book.
In his introduction, it seems to me that Brinkley places far too much emphasis on demolishing the "myth" that On the Road was frantically written in three weeks in April 1951, claiming that Kerouac had begun it much earlier. This may be news to Brinkley, but I'm sure that most Kerouac readers are already aware of that fact. They will have known it since Tim Hunt pointed out that Kerouac began working on the book in 1948, attempting at least five different versions over the next four years. Hunt published this information, with extracts from the earlier attempts, in his PhD thesis in 1975, and in his book, Kerouac's Crooked Road, in 1981.
There's no doubt that Kerouac DID write the version that eventually became the published On the Road in a three-week burst on a scroll of paper in April 1951. However, examination of the scroll reveals that it differs somewhat from the published version, with the insertion of material from his journals being added LATER, at a more leisurely pace, when Kerouac retyped it onto separate pages.
What we have in this volume makes fascinating reading, of course, and offers a little more insight into Kerouac's mind, and his working practices. Brinkley admits to editing the journals heavily in places, and also to mixing together parts from different journals, with no clear indication of the individual sources. The result of this can only be confusion.
This book has been six years in the making. I imagine that all Kerouac scholars and enthusiasts who have been waiting patiently for its appearance will need a copy, and will find the contents valuable. However, I do believe that an important opportunity has been missed to make this the truly outstanding work it could have been.
Feel like I've known this good friend for years..........2006-06-05
which leads me to think...am I Jack Kerouac incarnate???????
Well, when I read some of this incredible book, I am beginning to think so and am certain that Jack Kerouac and I are not very unlike. I love when Jack talks about his love for Dostoevsky, probably my idol novelist after finishing Crime and Punishment late last year. It's great how this book shows well that Jack was a very well read and intellegent philosophically minded man and how all this philosophizing distressed him. You really get the sense of being right there and witnessing the thought of a great mind.
Getting past that, Kerouac, in his journals gives us a view of the young struggling writer, agonizing over his work ethic finishing up his first published novel, The Town and the City. He even counts the words and you see entries near the beginning which start like, "2000 words in" and it really makes you think, was Jack trying to create a romanticized perception of himself for posterity, like Nietzsche? It certainly seems so.
Yet underneath all of that, these journals reveal Kerouac for what he was, a man. We see that when he is cut, he bleeds. I love his philosophical discourses on whatever is on his mind and his reasoning usually concludes with Christ so, of course you can't go wrong following that path.
The historical merit of this work is astounding, especially when it tells of events Kerouac would later fictionalize in On the Road and other novels.
If you've read On the Road, loved it like I have and would like to get a more personal understanding of the mind behind that timeless tale, check this one out. You will be very pleased you did.
I think this book changed me even further than On the Road.
Philosophical, lighthearted, fascinating.......2006-05-12
This is one of the best books I've ever read. To read about Kerouac and his thoughts and his struggles as he tries to make it is thoroughly enjoyable. It's fun to listen as he ponders and have a look inside him as he tries to make a living writing. I couldn't put it down.
Deeper Than The Deep Blue SEE.......2005-07-19
These journal notes were edited with a focus on Kerouac's development as a writer...his gestation of ideas, his struggle with the genius of writing...so into it...so entranced, so obsessed...with his writing. It shows another dimention (demention) to the writer...deeper than TV's pseudo news..., deeper than newspaper critics and biographers have assessed ..Kerouac really bleeds...then drinks the sacrament...transmuting his deepest fears into the golden rolling prose of on the road...His word counts get boring...his lower life prejudices get sanitized in this editing...his belief in redemption crucified...yet we are confronted with a real writer of the spirit, a man beyond our common definitions.... nothing less than a Blake...yes a writer of his times and beyond...every word of on the road was drenched in long term turmoil...words that became light on an ice skater's blades, as she skates thru time...moon light... a holy spot light..
A Must Read for Kerouac fans.......2005-03-27
Turning the pages of this book is like seeing Kerouac's life in motion. Within, the reader finally gets a look at Kerouac's struggles becoming the writer he grew into. A combination of pain, lonliness and detachment molded his views and values, resulting in On the Road, Dharma Bums, etc. It's exciting to see how one of the truely original and great American writers approached life and writing. I would recommend this to any reader.
Book Description
This is the poignant memoir of a man who has spent most of his lifetime immersed in the evidence of one of the great horrors in human history. It is both a record of how it affected him and a revelation of the surprising ways in which his monumental work was received by his contemporaries. Even after thirty-five years, Raul Hilberg's The Destruction of the European Jews remains the most distinguished and comprehensive analysis of the Nazi destruction process. Yet at the time it was written, as Mr. Hilberg recounts in The Politics of Memory, both the manuscript and its subject matter were rejected by major publishers and university presses; and in the wake of publication the author faced a hostile reception from those who refused to believe that the Jews were less than heroic in their journey to the gas chambers. How his study was used and abused--especially by Hannah Arendt, Lucy Dawidowicz, and Nora Levin--draws Mr. Hilberg's attention, as does the more admiring reception for Destruction in Europe than in America. The Politics of Memory brings full circle a scholarly enterprise that in many ways has been a terrible calling. A courageous, powerful portrait of one scholar's self-directed search for truth. --Toronto Globe and Mail

Where it all begins.......2002-12-16
Hillberg wrote this as a Phd thesis, and therefore it is a carefully researched book. I have an original copy signed by the author, and it came at a time to be my first major purchase on the subject. I had a chance to hear him speak a couple of years ago and brought my copy along. He was amazed that any still existed. Because of the purpose, it is not a "story," but a well done place for any one serious in learning could well start. His beginning statement of the eras of Jewish history is still the best I've ever hear in the 45 yrs. of collecting--read it and see.
Summary of life & work of the greatest Holocaust historian.......1999-02-04
The memoir is a much needed supplement for the scholarly works of undoubtedly peerless Holocaust researcher. All the process of transforming of Holocaust studies from metaphysical reflections into a scholarly discipline is revealed before our eyes, with almost tragic touch of author's own fate as "controversial"(for some) and plagiated scholar. And also a personal note: Gauleiter Kube, a much maligned Hitler's boss of Belorussia, got in Hillberg's magnum opus Destruction of European Jews some flesh and blood which made me understand better the Holocaust reality in my native land.
Hilberg's works are surely uneasy reading for those who perceive the Holocaust through a comforting model reduced to "... a more familiar picture of a struggle-- however unequal--between combatants" (p.135).
The language of the book is unusual and its laconism , though sometimes veiling the sense, is accompanied by inner dramatic beauty and power.
In general, Hilberg's memoir is a mind-nourishing and thought-provoking book, a must for anyone with an interest in history of the 20th century.
