A great tale of World War II.......2005-03-06
I could barely put this book down. It was a reviting story from the first page to the last.
The author also did not get into the "I'm so great" attitude that so many people do. Fighter pilots seem espcially prone to this idea.
It was also written in a nice simple matter that takes the time to explain what was going on for those who are not familair with the Second World War.
It is a great first person account of the air war in the Pacific.
Yah...my book has the authors signiture in it so HA!.......2004-11-17
Having met Bruce Porter, I can honestly say the guy is a jewel. Sure, I was all of ten then but he was just a nice, funny guy. His book is a illustration of this. His opening anecdote is of how the Marines "stole" him from the navy. From there it is the very best of history written by a man who was there.
I highly suggest this book to historians, Marines, vets and aviators the world across. Anyone else too.
ACE is a winner!.......2000-06-13
ACE is a good look at the world of WWII night pilots. It brings with it the Marine punch that delivers the grit and form to keep a reader enthralled.
Book Description
Featuring a new foreword by the author, this is the classic feminist analysis of sex that galvanized a cultural revolution. Originally published in 1976, The Hite Report revealed the most intimate sexual feelings of 3,000 women: what they like and don't like; how orgasm really feels, with and without intercourse; how it feels to not have an orgasm during sex; the importance of clitoral stimulation and masturbation; and the greatest pleasures and frustrations of their sexual lives. The most shocking revelation was that orgasm is simply and easily achieved with the right stimulation, and that sex is a cultural institution - not just a biological one. Hite explains in her introduction that while society has in theory made great strides with regard to female sexuality since the book's first edition, the dissatisfactions with their sex lives some women voice today are reminiscent of the issues raised in the 1970s..
Customer Reviews:
BAD SCIENCE.......2007-08-26
You can put fresh lipstick on a pig but the results are still ugly. The horrible data collection for this book was scientifically discredited in 1976.
The author sent out 100,000 questionnaires, received 3019 and used 1844. From this small, self-selected response she drew her conclusions. First, ask yourself, "If this was cancer research, would I bet my life on a 1.844% sample?"
The questionnaire had 58 essay questions requiring "as much detail as possible." Second, you must ask yourself who took the time to answer. Was it the self-validated career women busy with interesting hobbies and a successful, loving relationship or was it the lonely, bitter, unsatisfied woman sitting at her kitchen table at Three in the morning? Do you have the time and inclination to write a long detailed essay on your sexuality? If you do, this book is about you. If not, I recommend "Heterosexuality" by Masters and Johnson or "The Janus Report on Sexual Behavior." Both offer a more scientific approach to research and more reliable conclusions.
Not a Kinsey Report.......2007-08-19
When I read both this report and the one on male sexual behavior, I was hoping to see something akin and updating to the Kinsey Report. Kinsey's report on sexual behavior in both sexes furnished quite a bit of data more valuable than Hite's because he asked basically the same questions in his interviews with both sexes. Shere Hite didn't do that. This gives the reader only a few areas to compare the sexual behavior of males and females.
Hite stays completely away from the important subject of childhood sexual experiences, obviously, by complete absence of coverage, treating it as a taboo, off-limits subject, whereas Kinsey did deal with it in both sexes. One does not become a sexual being suddenly after childhood, but during childhood as well. Not all childhood sexual experiences are from sexual abuse, contrary to what using "childhood sexual experiences" as a search word on the Internet would lead one to believe, but are mostly from experimentation, either on self or with others or both. Although sex doesn't figure nearly as much in a prepubescent child's life as it does later and children instinctively sense that certain things about it are not appropriate for them, nevertheless the subject does excite their curiosity and they do have strong feelings about it. Kinsey knew this and was bold enough to investigate it as best he could by interviewing adults about this subject, relying on their recollections, since it was obviously off-limits to interview children and probably should be.
Hite also betrays a distinct feminist slant by highlighting abortion, the darling of the feminist movement. The best you can say for the relevance of abortion is that it is a byproduct of female sexuality. But, for that matter, so are pregnancy and childbirth, both of which Hite didn't touch. Nor did she cover menstruation, which is quite relevant, usually negatively, to a female's sexual experience.
To allow one's prejudices to shape research is very bad science, and I'm afraid Shere Hite is quite guilty of that and damaged the usefulness of what should have been a scientific report.
glad to have read this as an adolescent boy.......2005-04-25
"The Hite Report" (on female sexuality) is a seminal and indispensible text. It is by turn shocking, inspiring, disturbing, titillating, and sometimes boring, but always informative. What you get is practically PURE information, but of a sort rarely found elsewhere -- if sex weren't sex, the report would be a bone-dry academic snoozefest. Along with a bit of methodology and comment, the book's content is simply collected testimonies of American womens' subjective experiences of their sexuality. The reader is left to draw his or her own conclusions. As a study it assumes no strong thesis (unlike some of Hite's later work), therefore as a critic one can't say much more about it. That said, although the good people at Amazon insist we reviewers focus on the "product," I have something to add about my experience of the "product" that may be of more interest.
Back in the late 70's, my mother, in uncharacteristic daring and playfulness, shelved an early edition of the "The Hite Report" next to her cookbooks on the kitchen bookshelf and left it there. Years later, around the age of 13, her son (me) noticed this book was not like the other ones. Needless to say, after reading just a bit standing there in the kitchen, the son absconded with it to his room and read the whole thing. And reread. Many times. It was years before it got replaced next to "Larouse Gastronomique. " To this day, it lives there, and I've never asked Mom if she ever noticed its leave of absence.
My primary purpose at the time was titillation, but underneath my arousal was a sense of wonder and curiousity. Feminine sexuality was demystified for me even as my awe grew. Looking back, I see how I formed the basis of a deeply respectful understanding of the power of ALL sexuality. I accepted how taboos, shame, etc. might form around sex, but that sex in and of itself was not just neutral, but beautiful and precious. I authentically experienced what many (I believe) can only offer as a platitude or abstraction.
I could go on about what good I think "The Hite Report" did for me, but more important to me now is that it helped me become both a good lover and a good friend. As a young adult, having been taught to think I was "just a guy," I was repeatedly surprised to find myself being more insightful, accepting and compassionate about the twists and turns of many of my female companion's sexuality than they, their girlfriends, their mothers, or even their therapists could be. I don't say this to brag, but as a heartfelt testimonial to the educational and maturational value of having read this book during the right formative years. I was fortunate. In fact, I paused to write this review while shopping for a copy for a friend whom I wish could have read it 15 years ago.
Everybody, regardless of gender or background, should be availed of "The Hite Report" at the apporpriate age by the approriate person (and perhaps the report on male sexuality too). The only drawback to this report is its age; while it is incorrect to call it outdated, mores and customs do change, and a study like this should be repeated at least once a generation.
Should be a mandatory read for ALL hetrosexual men! ;-).......2005-04-06
I read this book when it first came out in 1976. I was 13 at the time, and boy oh boy did it make a big impression on me. I am so glad I had this book at a young age, so that, growing up, I knew from the get go that I was a normal, healthy girl. This is an amazingly informative book. I have to say that I disagree with the above reviewer in that I do not believe the book and its graphic content were there for simply "shock value", but were actual feelings, of actual women, from all over the United States. The fact that it was so graphic is perhaps an eye opener, but all the contents are presented in a fashion that makes it obvious that this is a serious work and not some sort of sleaze. All heterosexual males should read this book, because there is not a better reference of information regarding womens sexuality to be found. Highly recommended.
A couragous author!.......2000-06-09
I admire Shere Hite's courage to cover such a controversial topic, but that doesn't make it a good book. The focus was more on making people shocked at such a controversial topic than on covering such a controversial topic. Even so, it brought up many taboo topics that should've been out in the open years ago. Good book, not well balanced. Shere Hite is a good writer. Someone who can rackle this sort of sexual topic has to be!

a nice intro to veganism.......2007-04-08
easy recipes. this book is small and easy to pass along to family members who need a little understanding on how to cook vegan and the reasons to do so. i just passed this book along to my sister, as the recipes are not outlandish or intimidating to a non-vegan.
great for new vegetarians/vegans.......2006-12-03
This is my favorite cook book. My favorite recipe is the super easy vegan fudge (no candy thermometer needed, even chocolate connisseurs can't taste the difference.) There's a good selection of main courses, dessert, snacks, and breads - it isn't one of those fake vegan cookbooks that are really just side dishes of vegetables or carbs or cheese dishes. Also, it doesn't rely too heavily on "weird" ingredients like egg replacers, tofu, or tempeh, though there are some recipes in there for those looking to experiment, so it's perfect for beginning vegetarians or if those ingredients aren't available, and all the recipes are vegan, so you're not relying on cheese to make the food taste good - you're actually tasting the food! My copy is stained because I use it so often. I wish I had more vegetarian friends to give a copy to!
Good book for beginers..........2005-12-28
This was the second cook book I haver purchased and one of the most used(its held together with packing tape after a good 10 years of use. The banana bread alone makes it worthwhile.
A very good beginner cookbook.......2005-09-03
I know that when trying to fine a good cookbook you read a billion reviews, so i'll make this short.
I'm seventeen years old and a brand new vegan, so i started out knowing nothing. This is the first cookbook i bought, it was simple and easy to follow, and it's recipes have "normal" ingredients. Once you learn what your staples will be: nutritional yeast, tofu, TVP, beans... it's easy to keep them on hand no matter where you live. Believe me, i live in rural north dakota, i know the value of "down to earth" ingredients. This book is an inexpensive must-buy, very beginner-friendly.
Good Variety But Some Health Concerns.......2005-05-04
I've had to tweak some of the recipes to get the desired results, i.e. for the Sweet and Sour Tofu with Vegetables (p. 122) I found I had to double the ingredients (except for the tofu) because it didn't make near enough, esp. not for 4-6 people like the recipe claims! My concerns mostly are with the nutritional content of a lot of the recipes. Soy cheese/milk/parmesan are called for in a lot of them, and these processed soy foods are not health promoting, in addition to having the health-harming additive 'carrageenan' in them. I wish it had more recipes without soy and processed soy products. Of course, in defence of the author, it was published back in 1993 when everyone thought soy, in any form, was good! I'd like to see an updated/revised Compassionate Cook get written!

Book Description
Not since Terry McMillan's 'Waiting To Exhale,' has a book been so raw, gritty and honest about love, loss, family, relationships, acceptance and trust and put a voice to the collective frustration felt by millions of people looking for love in all the wrong places. Stories I Wouldn't Tell Nobody But God,' the long awaited, debut novel by Rasheed Clark, is an emotionally charged, provocative and page turning story of four friends, Sista, Brian, Day and Nikki and the rollercoaster ride that they call their lives. Sista, who will lose the only man she ever loved, as she allows her weight to determine her self worth. Brian, who learned the hard way that a good woman isn't hard to find, he just has to be man enough to keep her. Day, who must learn to accept himself for who and what he is. Nikki, whose perfect world is shattered when she loved a man more than she loved herself and it almost cost her, her life, because of her man's infidelity and lies. Powerfully told, heartwarming and funny, 'Nobody But God' will leave you wanting more. 'Stories I Wouldn't Tell Nobody But God,' because there are many things, many people tend to keep to themselves, out of fear nobody but God will understand.

Really Enjoyed It! - Wifey to Dwayne Murray's The Mouse That Roared.......2006-10-08
I read you book Mr. Clark and I really enjoyed it. What else can I add? The book made me laugh out loud while simultaneously it pulled at my heart strings. Good luck to you and I will definitely read your upcoming books!
Even Then I Won't Say It Out Loud.......2006-09-25
Author Rasheed Clark did a good job merging the lives of Sista, a young lady dealing with self-esteem issues because of her weight; her sister Loretta who married a good guy, but disrespects him; their brother Eric, the one who cou ld not stay out of jail, and Brian, who was afraid to open his heart to receive love. Add to them Nikki, good friend of the family and Day (who was dealing with some family problems of his own), who are best friends with Sista and Nikki.
Stories I Wouldn't Tell Nobody but God opens with Sista dealing with her issues, the decisions she has made and the regrets she has to keep her company. While trying to come to terms with who she is, Sista's father passes away; she has a few bad relationships and she has to deal with her wayward sister and her youngest brother's indiscretions. By book's end, everyone who was a part of Sista's life revealed some secrets of their own which helped her to realize that help is as close as you sharing your problems or issues, even the ones you do not want anyone privy to but God. Coming to terms with problems and dealing with them is the real road to healing.
I found myself turning pages to find out what would happen next. The book is simply about the things we sometimes deal with in life with family and friends and the crazy things we do, but through it all we can find peace and happiness, even in the worst situations. I am actually looking forward to reading the sequel to this book. The author provided a sample chapter at the end of the book and it starts off so good, I was disappointed there was only a sample of what is to come.
This review has been revised as of 2/20/07 and the rating is actually four stars.

Great Book.......2006-06-20
This book was referred to me by a friend that I ride the train with. I really enjoyed reading the book. I felt so many different emotions while reading the book. There were so many funny parts to it. I was really fond of Brian in the book. He seemed to be so compassionate and caring. I laughed really hard at the story he told Day about the girl he dated and why he stopped. For those who do read the book, the thing he did to that girl was wrong but it was so funny!!! I cried, I laughed, I got angry and that is what make this book so good. I am grateful that this book was referred to me. This book was also touching to me because I am currently dating someone in the Philadelphia area. I want to say thanks to the author for such an enjoyable read and to my train friend. Please everyone, take the time to read the book. I believe this is the first book written by this author and for a first book it is great. I have read many first time books that were not that great but this one exceeded them.
What are friends for?!?!.......2006-03-16
Admit it, we all have them. Me. And yes, you! We all have secrets. We've all done and/or said things we wouldn't tell anybody but God out of fear nobody would understand. Author Rasheed Clark gathered up a few, mixed them together and created his debut novel. In a "telling it like it is, hold no punches" manner, Rasheed chronicles the drama filled lives of four best friends, Brian, Sista, Nikki and Day. They don't realize how much they need each other until tragedy strikes. This novel will make you laugh, cry and sure enough agree with everything these characters have to say. Mr. Clark covers every angle by dealing with relatable issues of love, death, and every day going-ons.

Book Description
A memoir of life under Nazi and communist rule in Hungary and Romania, this book provides an eyewitness account of the social and political upheaval that shook Eastern Europe from the mid-1930s to the mid-1960s. As an underground resistance fighter, political prisoner, fugitive, and Communist Party official, Egon Balas charts his journey from idealistic young Communist to disenchanted dissident.
Attracted by its anti-Nazi stance, Balas joined the Hungarian Communist Party in 1942, after Hungary had entered the war on Hitler's side. He helped organize work stoppages and distribute anti-war leaflets. In his memoir, he offers a compelling account of his eventual imprisonment and ordeal under torture, followed by his adventure of escape and hiding.
Later, Balas rose to high positions in postwar Romania. Arrested again, this time by the communist authorities, he spent two years in solitary confinement. Unbroken, he was released after Stalin's death but was never forgiven for his refusal to cooperate in the staging of a show trial. Disenchanted with the regime, Balas started a new life as a self-educated applied mathematician. After several unsuccessful attempts to leave Romania, he was finally able to emigrate in the mid-sixties.
The book gives detailed information about the destruction of Transylvanian Jewry, and offers devastating indictments of communist procedures and personalities, particularly the ordeal that would-be Jewish emigrants faced with the Romanian Securitate, which controlled exit permits.
Egon Balas, a renowned mathematician, has been a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University since 1967. In 1995 he was awarded the John von Neumann Theory Prize of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.
Customer Reviews:
Truly outstanding!.......2002-03-12
This memoir lays out in exquisite prose a touching, insightful journey through a series of challenges that are almost incomprehensible to those of us who have grown up in happier times. As I read I could not help but wonder how I would measure up to the ethical and moral standards set by Professor Balas. His academic excellence and stature are well known to all of us who have worked in any field related to mathematical programming; this book makes it clear that in addition to being an exemplary academic in every way, Professor Balas is also a very great gentleman, in the best British sense of the word. I can only say I am proud to have known him.
Brilliance and bravery saved him.......2001-10-19
If ever I get imprisoned I'll remember to use a coffee-stained napkin and stale bread to make a chess set. I also learned from Egan Balas that to exercise in a confined space one takes an odd number of steps - else one walks in circles. Algorithmic ingenuity enabled him to successfully take up mathematics in his late 30s, against the conventional wisdom that good mathematicians do their work when young, and become an outstanding professor of industrial administration, applied mathematics and operations research at Carnegie Mellon University.
He tells stories of his lives - escaping death narrowly - "according to my own taste", making it one of the most compelling biographies I have ever read.
This would be an extraordinary thriller if it were fiction - but it's not, it's real. The highly personal account of how a Transylvian Jew became a revolutionary worker, a dapper diplomat, a tortured prisoner and a creative academic takes one through some absolutely awful scenes. Balas' craftiness enabled him to survive and his toughness under severe torture protected his friends. This is not some second hand account of Communist and Nazi hate, Balas drags the reader through his pain and suffering. There are happier moments - such as when he comes out of prison and addresses his daughter - not realizing that he's speaking to a younger sibling born in his absence and that his daughter has grown considerably.
For anyone who wants to understand willpower and survival in Hungary and Romania during the 2nd world war this is a must read. Besides historical interest, the story's suspense makes it an ideal gift for thriller and spy story readers.
A triumph of the human spirit against all odds.......2001-03-13
Professor Balas from Carnegie Mellon University is one of the most respected members of the Operations Research community. I am a big fan of Professor Egon Balas, having read his papers on the "Lift and Project" method in solving mixed integer programming problems.
Nothing moved me as much as this book though. I agree with the reviewer from Toronto, the book is definitely a great scientific mind at work, where Egon describes clearly and in vivid detail all that he went through, without any bitterness or resentments.
A triumph of the human spirit against all odds and adversaries!
A view into a dark period of my country.......2000-07-04
Truly a fascinating story. I was born in Romania and went to college in Cluj during the late sixties. The period of time between 1945-1954 was always a mystery to me. Egon Balas has opened my eyes on many aspects of my country's secret past. The book is very engaging and kept me captivated until the end. Egon's story is representative of what happened to Transylvanian Jews who were communists before and after the war. While not all stories have happy endings like Egon's, I know of many people with similar stories. None of them talked to me in so many details and so eloquently as Egon did in his book. I am greatful to Egon for making this very personal account of his life public, so that the story of the communist Jews of Cluj is not lost forever. Great book !
WOW!.......2000-04-07
Of all the books I have read in the last 6 months or so, this is one of the best. I really like the way E. Balas factually describes the most horrific things that happened to him. When I finished the book, I wondered about the loss of all those people like him, who could have made such a great contribution, but were killed instead. A great book.
