Lectures on Revival.......2007-10-10
A much needed volume in our day, when true religion is at a low. What we need in our day is revival. A return to preaching that searches the heart, convicts of sin, and focuses on the need for regeneration (a Spirit-wrought blessing). The letters alone are worth the price of the book, with many who were leaders in revivals of by-gone days. The likes of Archibald Alexander, Heman Humphries, Samuel Miller, Edward Payson, Ashbel Green, Edward Griffin, just to name a few. The Lectures themselves are "GOLD". Nature and Defense of Revivals gives us a Biblical view of what Revival is. Obstacles and Divine Agency in Revivals shows us the things to be avoided as well as the Author of revival. Treatment Due to Awakened Sinners will give counsel of how to treat those under awakening. Means of Producing and Promoting Revival is great counsel(NOT as Finney prescribed). Foreward by Lloyd Jones. A GEM of a book, get it read it, re-read it.

Book Description
The name of Albert Einstein, firmly attached to the important physical theory of Relativity, has become of interest to the whole world. Accounts of Dr. Einstein's work are already many and various, but his personality has not yet become well-known. Mr. Moszkowski, a profound admirer and close companion of the now famous professor, lifts the veil in this entertaining and informing volume, and in describing many long and profoundly interesting discussions he has had with Dr. Einstein on all kinds of subjects, scientific and other, he illuminates for us the thought-world and personality of the great scientist.

Pity poor Robert Pritikin: his father Nathan, who almost died of heart disease in the 1950s but saved himself with his famous low-fat diet, was extraordinarily disciplined. He could eat a dinner of brown rice and then go for a run. Robert, on the other hand, craved cheeseburgers and just wanted to hang out on the couch. It turns out that Robert had the "fat instinct," a natural, evolution-favored tendency to eat calorically dense foods and conserve energy. How he beats that instinct--and how you can, too--is the heart of his Breakthrough. The book shows how to eat until you're full several times a day; enjoy the food you're eating; use exercise to create cravings for nutrient-rich, carbohydrate-based foods; and stay on the program even if you're traveling or out with friends at a restaurant. The Pritikin Weight Loss Breakthrough is the answer to all the anticarbohydrate, pro-protein and pro-fat books out there, citing legitimate research to defend its positions and offering dozens of recipes to help facilitate the plan.
Book Description
For over 20 years, THE PRITIKIN PROGRAM FOR DIET AND EXERCISE by Nathan Pritikin has set the standard for people wanting to eat healthier, citing the healthy intake of grains, vegetables, and fruits, while avoiding foods full of fat and cholesterol. Now, through research at the Pritikin Longevity Center, his son Robert Pritikin has discovered the genetic key that unlocks the secret to why people crave the "wrong" kinds of food. With THE PRITIKIN WEIGHT LOSS BREAKTHROUGH, Robert Pritikin demonstrates how people can live longer, healthier lives, without the fat.
Customer Reviews:
Probably the best book of its kind.......2003-11-14
This is probably the best book of its kind because it is one of the only books I've seen out there that is scientific, practical and non-gimmicky. In an industry where there are more weight loss gimmicks coming out everyday this book rises to the top and is a great relief in a world of silly weight loss gimmicks.
Here are just some of the great and practical ideas Pritikin proposes:
-Don't just cut back on calories, the metabolism slows down and our willpower gives out eventually when we feel deprived, better to eat in a high fiber/low fat filling manner that satisifies you completely without any starving.
-Once we cut back on a lot of fatty foods and excessive meat and substitute it with high fiber and complex carb eating, we lose the craving for those bad foods.
-Excercise helps keep up our desire for these healthy foods.
Those are the main ideas of his system. They are very practical and don't mislead people into some silly way of eating. One of the absolutely outstanding things about this system is that the hardest part is getting yourself used to eating a lot of fruits and vegetables. Believe it or not, that is the hardest part of this system. Once you get past that and develop a taste for fruits & vegetables, this "diet" just pretty easily flows from there. It's hard to believe, but this "diet" really does legitamately eliminate the need for calorie counting because if you really just watch the fat/sugar intake and keep your fiber intake high, your calories can't help but stay quite low (except perhaps for those that have compulsive eating disorders)because vegetables/fruits/fiber really do fill you up much more than the average high fat manner of eating. With this sytem, you can very EASILY trim 300-400 calories a day with just minor changes and no starving at all.
One other great bonus about this "diet" is that it's very economical. You can eat a healthy meal for .70 cents if you wanted to. Weigh that up against these low carb diets that have you spending $2.50 just for a low carb bar that you practically need to keep those diets going. Not to mention all these other low carb products out now (has anyone wondered how absurd it is to think that the low carb people think man can create better foods than nature has provided for us!) and the cost of large quantities of meat etc. It's about 3-4X the cost of eating the Pritikin way.
This system works and you can maintain it for life. One of the criticisms that this "diet" receives is that the low fat recommedations are excessive and impractical, what I've learned is that you can actually slighly exceed the low fat recommendations Pritikin makes and you will still be able to maintain an extremely reasonable calorie intake. So I would ignore that criticism because even if you only follow 85% of the strictest recommendations, you will get outstanding results! Even only following the Pritikin recommendations about 80-85% of the time, I still lost weight!
One tip I would add: Even though as Pritikin proposes in his book, you will lose weight if you follow his moderate excercise instructions, if you really want to see quicker results in weight loss, I would suggest doing more exercise than this book recommends. 3-5 days of vigorous exercise will make a HUGE difference in your results.
I think I can do this!.......2002-04-16
Finally, I'm reading about a diet that makes intuitive sense! Picked up this great book at the library last week and went on the program (they don't call it a diet) immediately. The program of veggies, whole grains, fruit, low-fat proteins leaves you almost constantly hungry, but Pritikin doesn't want you to remain in that state. You're allowed to eat whenever you're hungry, as long as the food is on the list of healthy foods. You're encouraged to walk at least 30 minutes, 3-4 times a week (to reduce your craving for fatty food), something just about anyone can accomplish. My husband and I enjoyed eating this way over the weekend, and we think we've found something we can keep up.
The book tends a lot toward the theoretical side, and less toward the practical side, but I enjoyed that. Many of the suggested recipes have lots of ingredients and aren't what you'd make for an average meal after a long day at work, but other than that, I really enjoyed the book! I might just have to buy my own copy, when this book becomes due at the library.
Excellent theory but not enough details on diet & exercise.......2000-02-05
"Breakthrough" contains a new rationale for the Pritikin program called the "fat instinct". Pritikin explains what that concept means, then shows how his theory explains why the modern (western) diet causes illnesses which people who eat "traditional" diets do not have, why other weight-loss plans fail, and why the Pritikin program works. Pritikin then spends some time defending his position on carbohydrates. The practical result of all this is a chapter on behaviors which can be used to "outsmart the fat instinct". This is followed by a too-short explanation of how to follow the Pritikin program, and then a recipe section.
This book does a great job of motivating the reader, explaining why the Pritikin program is necessary, and it gives new information about the behaviors necessary for dieting. However, "Breakthrough" does not give a detailed explanation of what the Pritikin diet and exercise program is. The Program is explained in one short chapter with a brief description of exercise methods earlier in the book.
I strongly recommend that anyone interested in the Pritikin program also purchase the book "The New Pritikin Program", which spends over 400 pages discussing things which "Breakthrough" just mentions in passing. Even though "Breakthrough" is the newer book, "The New Pritikin Program" remains the definitive explanation of what the Pritikin Program is.
Good, but flawed recipes.......1999-06-25
I have been through the 2-week Pritikin program in Santa Monica, so I'm pretty familiar with this lifestyle and have followed it for years. So I haven't read the text part of this book, but bought it for some new recipes. I have made two of them so far, and while I think they are (or can be) good, they are badly written. The quantities are huge and instructions confusing or incomplete. It's a shame because the chefs at the centers are very good and have some unbelievable recipes.
It works!.......1999-05-19
I bought this book, read it, followed the directions and 7 months later I'm 50 pounds lighter. And I have no doubt that I can live with this diet for the rest of my life.
Let's cut to the bottom line -- there is one thing I can say about the Pritikin diet that I can't say about all the others: It works!

Book Description
In a letter to Sir Thomas Browne about his proposed magnum opus on gardens, John Evelyn stated his purpose: "to refine upon some particulars, especially concerning the ornaments of Gardens, which I shal endeavor so to handle that persons of all conditions and faculties, which delight in Gardens, may therein encounter something for their owne advantage."
In his Elysium Britannicum, or The Royal Gardens, Evelyn indeed produced a rich document, an assemblage of the horticultural knowledge and wisdom of the seventeenth century. An intriguing intellectual whom many have called a virtuoso, Evelyn was a garden designer, a noted author and translator of garden books, and a founding member of the Royal Society in 1660, where experimental science was at the heart of intellectual debate. Interlacing in his work practical, literary, and philosophical approaches to landscape architecture, Evelyn created the first large-scale encyclopedic work on the science and art of gardening.
Evelyn never saw his great work published. Until now, the entire Elysium Britannicum, or The Royal Gardens has never appeared in print. In an impressive transcription, John E. Ingram makes the document--of which only a single folio volume remains--accessible to a wide range of scholars. Complete with Evelyn's extensive marginalia, interlineations, and tipped-in addenda, the manuscript is expertly organized by Ingram to preserve the meaningful complexity of Evelyn's original.
The Elysium Britannicum, or The Royal Gardens was composed over a period of forty years, and Ingram's transcription reveals the challenge Evelyn faced in writing in--and for--a rapidly evolving intellectual culture. The work also displays many of Evelyn's own illustrations, including drawings of garden layouts, diagrams of inventions for plant and tree cultivation, and plans for the artificial and natural embellishment of the land, all of which were to contribute to the beauty and utility of the gardens.

Book Description
Ben Mandelkern was only 23 when the Nazis invaded his native Poland in September 1939. From then until the end of the war he one concern--survival.
Like other Polish Jews, Ben and his young wife, Helena, came face to face with the evil of Nazism as their families and friends were murdered by the SS. Ben himself was captured, but in an incredible display of clear-headedness and courage managed to escape from the train transporting him to Treblinka. Seperated from Helena he stayed one step ahead of their persecutors, participating in the Warsaw Ghetto uprising before finally being liberated by the Russians in 1945. Free at last, he struggled desperately to reunite with his beloved wife.
Escape from the Nazis is Mandelkern's remarkable saga, a tale of terror and remarkable heroism, and a love story like no other.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......1999-02-18
I am a Holocaust educator and have read literally hundreds of Holocaust books. Ben's story is one of the most remarkable I have ever read. Once you begin to read this story you can't put it down. I have been writing to Ben for 10 years now. After I read his book I was so moved by it that I sat down and wrote Ben a letter in care of the publishing company. I had the priviledge of finally meeting him this summer before embarking on a Holocaust and Hope journey to Germany,Poland and Israel. Knowing Ben has made my life richer. I would encourage anybody to read his book. Alot of my friends have read it and they, too, share my sentiments!
My Grandfather's Expression.......1998-07-29
I might have a slightly biased view of this book, because I am one of Ben's grandsons. I remember people telling me that he started this book as a way to relate his experiences in the war to his family in particular, his grandchildren. First it was the knife story, and maybe some others. In fact, the original title for the work was "Grandpa's Stories," but was later changed by the publisher. Anyway, the pages soon multiplied and my grandfather was in the midst of an entire book which I would hear in later years brought back painful memories for him. Now, about ten years later, I see people with the book who tell me that once they've started reading it (or very often re-reading it), they couldn't stop until the last page.
