Reading to Know.......2006-10-06
This book starts with lot of myths related to entitlement, autonomy, romantic love, gender myths, marriage. Recognizing some amount of narcissim in all relationships, does not make it seem so very pathological...
Not the best book available on the subject.......2006-07-01
I read any book about narcissism eagerly, but this one disappointed me. The title "Narcissism and Intimacy" implied to me that this book would explain the frustrating and psychologically devastating maze that is life with a pathological narcissist. It didn't. Maybe because it is a book more about therapy than real life experiences, I found it murky and did not teach me anything new about the subject. Usually I find it heartening to read accounts of the impact of the narcissist on the lives of their significant others, but I really got nothing out of this book. I also got the idea the author was discussing regular narcissism, a personality trait, as opposed to pathological narcissism, a personality disorder. If you want to read a great book that will explain everything you want to know about pathological narcissism, read Sam Vaknin's book "Malignant Self Love", which is long and a little expensive, but really the ultimate book on the subject and worth every penny. If you want something shorter and less expensive, try "When Your Perfect Partner Goes Perfectly Wrong" by Mary Jo Fay.
Love and Marriage Aid.......2005-09-26
I feel that this book will help both men and women understand not only themselves but their spouse better. All of us have varying degrees of narcissism and in order to love someone we need to learn to control our own needs for the betterment of the two as one and the one we love. This book helps with giving one a better understanding of how we can do that and what may be holding us back from really experiencing true love and intimacy.
Narcissism and Intimacy.......2003-11-17
A defining dimension of pathological narcissism is the inability to foster and maintain intimacy. Intimacy is not only feared - it is despised because it is perceived as 'common' and 'degrading'. The narcissist idealizes his sources of narcissistic supply and then habitually discards and devalues them. This book is instrumental both as a somewhat iconoclastic introduction to narcissism and as an anatomy of the frustration that is life with a narcissist. Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited".
Interesting, but by no means enlightening.......2000-04-04
This book is more of a therapist's guide to dealing with a few particular narcisstic marriages. The only thing this book does is to discuss certain narcisstic personalities in a marriage situation. That's about as far as the author takes the topic. Narcissism is only talked about in a marriage setting, not in terms of any love or relationships outside of a marriage. While the author does give some interesting examples and does well comparing and contrasting narcisstic and non-narcisstic personalities, the examples are few and are very particular to certain types of marriges and are hard apply to anything else. The author also doesn't give any clues on how to go about changing narcisstic patterns if you're stuck in them, which is what I was hoping to find when I bought the book.
Book Description
“Nearly every crucial fact regarding cocktail construction...is elevated by Wondrich’s erudite and estimably sharp wit.”—Wine & Spirits
Anyone can lift a glass—but drinking with class, taste, and wisdom is a completely different matter. David Wondrich, Esquire magazine’s renowned “drink pundit,” is here to remedy that sad situation and restore a tradition of intelligent, sophisticated drinking. Wondrich simply provides the liveliest history of drinks imaginable, serving up wit and wisdom that will help you sort out the classic from the crass and master the fundamentals of mixology. The highlight: the delicious drinks themselves. The recipes, with loads of information and variants, appear on pages brightened with vintage photos that perfectly capture the spirit of each cocktail. There are daiquiris, amusingly named gin drinks like “William Seabrook’s Asylum,” a Whiskey Sour, Margarita, Vodka Martini, and a barfull more!

Must Have.......2007-01-09
David Wondrich is funny, informative, clever, and knows how to piece words together to paint an elaborate picture in your mind. The pages are slick, colorful and filled with well thought out graphic details that would make a graphic artist drool. Most bartenders--in the real world--will only make about 25 of the 250 cocktails in the book, but that doesn't matter because the researched history makes up for it. Also the square shape of the book is oh-so-cool.

The title really does say it all.......2005-08-22
I am a fairly serious student of mixology (not to be confused with an actual mixologist). I have become interested in great-but-bygone cocktails. This book is a very funny look at just these. It is not, to quote [...], a "Wad-o-Drinks" book (that would be the Bartender's Best Friend by Mardee Reagen--also a really good book). But since most of those drinks are quite undrinkable, that's okay. It is also perhaps not as comprehensive as some the historical cocktail books (e.g. the Waldorf Astoria & Savoy cocktail books), but it more than makes up for this in being an entertaining read.
Remember "Rule 313: Never order a drink named after a part of the anatomy normally covered by underwear".
superior design, and witty writing.......2003-07-07
wondrich strikes just the right tone throughout, and is knowledgeable without being pedantic. his writing has a delightful self-mocking noirish pungency that really works. and the stylish art deco layout is a triumph. a keeper.
A bar book with a pedigree........2002-11-25
As titled, Esquire Drinks is INDEED a bar guide with pedigree. Every decade or two, Esquire Magazine takes a stab at the current state of drinks and soirees. As such, Esquire Drinks owes more in its lineage to the magazine of the 30s and 40s (and it's 1949 progenitor, Esquire's Handbook for Hosts) than what it would become later - especially in the 60s-80s. While the Esquire Drink Book of 1956 was essentially a revision of the earlier work, and the Esquire Party Book of 1965 was just plain awful, Esquire Drinks is an entirely new vision - as befits our newish millenium. That said, it maintains the wonderful haughty and judgemental Esquire "voice" of old. As such, it happily trashes much of the wrongheaded "Martini" headset of today whereby virtually all drinks are fruity and sweet with alcohol disguised. Author Wondrich trods imperiously where other guides oft fear to tread. If this sounds intimidating or pedantic, it really isn't. David Wondrich is a hell of a writer and instills great humor and panache in this lovely book. He also cares very deeply about all of the aspects heretofore touched upon... the history, the research, the Esquire connection, and the DRINKS. The drinks are old and new, and some are culled anew from Esquire magazines of the past, but all of the drinks carry the CHARACTER of classic cocktails and related libations. In other words, be prepared to experience subtle and sophisticated drinks and tippling at the hands of this book. Visually, Esquire Drinks owes much to advances in printing arts today. It is a carnival of color on coated stock and would certainly make for pleasant perusal on any cocktail table - providing inspiration and impetus for many an evening's advancement.

The unique Siamese
This is the cate for pet lovers. The Siamese is active, mischievous, exceedingly protective- and has a voice that been called a bark! In truth, the Siamese does purr. But he doesn't limit himself to purring. He has a dozen voices and uses every one every day and amuses himself-and us- with his endless variations of pitch and tone, growl and murmur. He talks a lot! Fortunately, it's all talk- even though some of it borders on oration. Rarely is the Siamese a loud-voiced cat, a singer. He just loves conversation... (cont.)
This book offers chapters on The History of, handling of, look of, feeding of, and breeding of Siamese cats. Additionally, it has plenty of color pictures, some big enough to frame!

Gallagher Guide ............... Molly's Reviews .......2005-05-31
Editor Gallagher has produced a book using contributions from real moms and meant to be used by real moms. From start to finish the new mom is offered suggestions on everything from which type of formula is best and why individual women prefer one over the other to what features to look for in a stroller. Moms who have faced late night diaper changes suggest one piece pajamas with zippers rather than cute footed garments that are hard to put on and take off. Women who have faced sleep deprivation during the first weeks following the birth of their baby offer good sound advice to new moms concerning the importance for baby AND mom to get enough sleep. Each hint is presented in clear, concise language and in type large enough to read easily. Chapters are filled with short easily read hints new moms can read while nursing or bottle feeding their new baby, while waiting for the train to pass by or the light to change. Format is sensible; few new mothers have time to plow through pages and pages of tiny print.
User-Friendly Guide -- Must-Have for New Moms.......2005-05-10
When you trade in your DINK status for a new-mom status, you cannot be without this guide. It is easy to use, practical, and offers loads of testimonials from moms who have been there, done that. I can't think of a more useful resource for new parents who are wading through the thicket of the early days. Its format is reminiscent of a travel guide, only its purpose is to offer you a roadmap through the confusing consumer chasm that baby superstores can be. Get this book before you need it -- you'll be glad you did!

Top Notch Reference Book for Moms.......2004-11-16
This book has loads of helpful advice from real moms. It is so easy to access just what you need in minutes. This isn't just for moms of babies-it's for moms (and even dads) of older kids too. I gave a copy to a friend who said-"The author's a genius!"
Best Baby Guide Ever!.......2004-10-30
I happened to receive the first guide (published in small quantities) as a giveaway and loved it. When I saw that a second version was coming out I jumped all over it!!!
This book has been such a wonderful reference book for me through pregnancy, childbirth, infanthood, and now into toddlerhood! I use it all the time and have pages dogeared for reference!
The advice of hundreds of moms just like me is invaluable, you get a good cross section of reviews and can choose a solution that works for you.
I recommend anyone pregnant, with an infant or toddler get this book NOW!
Nothing Special.......2004-10-20
Although the title tells you just what to expect, it's nothing special for the price. You could get the same thing that this book offers by asking your questions at any online parenting board.
Personally, I like to make sure that the people I ask advice from have the same philosophy of parenting. If I'm really in a jam, then I go to trusted experts.
I suppose my main problem with this book is that it is so unfocused.
