It is clear that all organisms have highly developed mechanisms for self-repair and healing -- but according to Dr. Weil, Western medicine often interferes instead of working with these systems. In the course of his argument, he describes several extraordinary case studies of drastic spontaneous healing. Perhaps the most valuable feature of the book is his more gradual eight-week program of strengthening the ability of your immune, endocrine, circulatory, and nervous systems to provide such spontaneous healing.
Book Description
"Memorable...Dr. Weil makes his case carefully and clearly."
--The New York Times Book Review
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
"This book is destined to become a classic."
--Joan Borysenko, author of
Minding the Body, Mending the Mind
Drawing on fascinating case histories from his own practice as well as medical techniques he has observed in his travels around the world, Dr. Weil shows how the mechanisms of self-diagnosis and self-regeneration have worked to resolve life-threatening diseases, severe trauma, and chronic pain. But spontaneous healing is also the essential element in the maintenance of our basic daily health. The book outlines an eight-week program that each of us can use to alter our diet, avoid environmental toxins, and reduce stress in order to enhance our innate healing powers.
The best medicine does not merely combat germs or suppress symptoms, but rather works hand in hand with the body's natural defenses to manage illness. Building on this fundamental truth and tapping into the intricate interaction of mind and body, Dr. Weil arrives at a major new synthesis of conventional and alternative medical treatments. At once practical and inspirational,
Spontaneous Healing gives each one of us the power and the wisdom to draw on the sources of health we hold within.
Customer Reviews:
Enlightening and Practical.......2007-03-27
Great book. Found the rationale to be sensible and based on common sense information. Loved the 8 week program. Am trying it now and find it is working for me very well. Overall, learned a lot about alternative medicine and how to take a different view of illness.
An Important Book.......2004-09-30
Andrew Weil's basic premise in "Spontaneous Healing"-that that body can heal itself-is one of my own most cherished beliefs, and I have found the experience of reading Dr. Weil at a time when I am recovering from an illness to be particularly inspiring and informative. That is not to say that the book is for those who are currently ill; indeed, Dr. Weil focuses as much on prevention as healing. But for those who are ill this book can be an illumination. I have read Dr. Weil's "Health and Healing" so I was familiar with his ideas about healing and medicine, but the lucidity of his writing here eclipses that early book and brings his points home as clearly and simply as possible.
Dr. Weil believes that allopathic doctors need to pay more attention to nurturing the body's inherent ability to heal, instead of administering medicine. He argues again and again that allopathic medicine, while extremely valuable in certain illnesses, is, for the most part, not a very good solution to many types of illness. Often allopathic medicine is merely suppressive. This is definitely the case with medicines that treat autoimmune disorders and digestive disorders like ulcerative colitis-once the medicine is stopped, symptoms often return, sometimes worse. This is one of the reasons I refused to take Colozal for ulcerative colitis. According to my gastroenterologist, Colozal treats the symptoms of colitis efficiently, yet one has to stay on the medicine indefinitely for the "cure" to be effective. In fact this is not a cure at all. Real healing occurs when the body is given a chance to heal. To this end, Dr. Weil suggests alternatives to allopathic medicine: lifestyle changes, diets recommendations, and certain tonics. These alternatives do not merely combat specific germs or suppress symptoms, but rather work with the bodies natural defenses to promote healing.
People have treated themselves successfully with alternative remedies for years. Here, Dr. Weil gives numerous case examples. Indeed, testimonials form the basis of much of his knowledge of healing. He argues, lucidly, that testimonials should not be ignored but taken very seriously; they should even be studied. While Dr. Weil scrutinizes the stories he hears very carefully, and is reluctant to take every story of healing at face value, he understands that "testimonials are important pieces of evidence." He writes: "They are not necessarily testimony to the value of particular healers and products. Rather, they are testimony to the human capacity for healing. The evidence is incontrovertible that body is capable of healing itself."
Without the help of testimonials I would have never used Ayurvedic medication for my ulcerative colitis symptoms. Yet, I was convinced by the simple power of other's people's stories of healing. (One of Dr. Weil's "Seven Strategies of Successful Patients" is, "Seek out other who have been healed.") And now I can offer other people my own story of healing.
The sections on the role of spirit and mind in healing struck me as the most important in the book. Why has the medical profession abandoned the idea of psychosomatic illness? Dr. Weil cites several testimonials of people using the power of the mind and spirit to cure serious illness. He even mentions Dr, John Sarno, whose book "The Mindbody Prescription" helped me tremendously when I was first diagnosed with my own illness.
Simply put, this book is important. I recommend it highly.
A Phenomenal Book to Starting a Healthy Life.......2003-04-30
Being a current college student I face various abuses in my life such as alcohol consumption, smoking and stress. I wanted a book that would give me a natural way to repair my body and at the same time change my bad lifestyle. Spontaneous Healing: Discover and Enhance Your Body's Natural Ability To Maintain and Heal Itself by Andrew Weil M.D., provides its readers with vital information to promote healing internally and externally. It is through natural alternatives, methods and remedies that keep the body consistently healthy or eradicating diseases from the body without harming the balance of it. Andrew Weil who exposes the reader to alternative methods that the conventional medical community has diagnosed without success. Everyone should know the various options available to them and the book is a phenomenal guide in exposing its readers to the natural way to a healthy life.
Andrew Weil M.D has compiled various testimonials from his associates, clients and friends and listed the various illnesses that people have suffered and the success they went through by changing their lifestyle and not accepting the negative end that the conventional medicine has placed upon them. The story that made an impact on me was the story of Mark M. He is a man infected with AIDS virus and was projected to die in two years yet he defied the doctors prognosis by following his instinct by changing his diet and lifestyle. Mark M. is an example of a man that took matters in his own hands. This made an impact to me because sometimes you have to be proactive in you health and never settle with one prognosis. Always remember that this is you life and that one should knows what works for them.
The book has given me an insight to find a center in my life. It has given me tips on ways of dealing with stress and one step at a time guide to gradually having a healthy diet. Cleansing both my internal and mental mind made my body more holistic and healthy. It made me more aware of the various factors that can affect one's body in a negative way like stress and pollutants. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a healthy life from now on and in the future.
Another excellent resource from Dr. Weil.......2002-01-18
I bought Spontaneous Healing to be a companion to my other books by Dr Weil. I had truly enjoyed both 8 Weeks to Optimum Health and Natural Health, Natural Medicine. This is yet another excellent resource on how to integrate "alternative" medical practices with what you already know in order to achieve natural healing and wellness. Much of what he says are things that we already know: exercise is good, we need to eat more vegetables and fiber, get enough rest, and so on. But he also has new ideas presented here, as well as in his other books. I'm especially impressed with the breathing techniques. I was very skeptical that something as simple as breathing could have an impact on how I was feeling. But it really does make a difference! (The "waking up" technique saved me in college when I had no coffee).
My only criticism for this book is that the philosophy is "believe you'll be well, visualize being well, and it will happen." I agree that the mind plays a large role in our health, but I don't think that mind power alone will save you from all ailments. One example in the book is actually a woman who beat cancer without going through traditional treatments or chemotherapy. I find that wonderful and inspiring, but a bit unrealistic.
This book focuses on Healing in particular, so I would definitely take that into account when making a purchase. It talks about overcoming various health problems and has several good tips about health in general. But unless you're specifically looking for such a resource, I would recommed getting a book that covers health in a more general way such as Natural Health, Natural Medicine. If you're a pretty healthy person, this book really isn't really necessary.
The audio book reader was terrible, where did they find him?.......2002-01-15
I have long been a fan of Weil's works, and I bet this book is just as good as all the rest.
However the audio book is terrible. The nasal, robotic reader suppliments the work with unrythmic pauses that are very distracting. I was determined to listen to this book out of loyalty to Weil, but was unable to get through the first side of the first cassette. I have literally never heard a worse audio book.
If you are going to buy this book, save money and get the paper version.
Customer Reviews:
A must for any kitchen!!.......2001-01-09
My mother has owned a copy of the original "Three Rivers" Cookbook, since we lived in Indiana in the early 1970s. I find myself constantly calling her and asking for recipes. Some of my favorite recipes in the cookbook include sugar cookies and bon bons. The sugar cookie recipe is the best cookie recipe I have ever used -- great for holiday cookies; and, the bon bons are extremely tasty!! Thanks to Amazon.com, I am able to get a new copy of the original for myself and a new copy for my mom.
Simple and tasty........1999-03-14
A neighbour gave me this book when I just moved to US. I have used different recipies from this cookbook and I have gotten many compliments from my guest. Now I am getting this cookbook for my daughter.
This book got me hooked.......1998-12-07
I received this cookbook as a child. It was a gift from my aunt who lived in Pittsburg at the time. She also sent me Volume II. These were the first cookbooks that were my very own as a little girl and I'd have to say that they really got me interested in cooking "like a grown-up." These books with their clear and simple directions helped me make the jump from cooking with store-bought mixes to cooking from scratch. I especially love the fudgy brownie recipe and the zucchini bread recipe. I would definitely recommend the Three Rivers Cookbooks. My copies are well used to this day.
One cookbook I can't live without!.......1998-07-14
Don't be fooled by the publication date, this is a timeless cookbook filled with wonderful recipes. The Mexicali Stack-Up is great for a crowd or for kids and the Thumbprint Cookies are addictive!
Book Description
This book takes the complete novice--armed only with a gleam in the eye, and a basic knowledge of hammer, saw, and screwdriver--and walks him or her through the process of building a boat. The only materials needed are easily available from any lumberyard: plywood, 2x4s, nails, and wood glue. The process is simple, the result is extraordinary--your own boat, ready to sail, in just a week or two, for a fraction of the cost of buying a factory-built (boring!) boat. And the sense of accomplishment is beyond compare.
The main focus of the book is on building the 14-foot sailing/rowing skiff called "Mayfly." Full plans and detailed step-by step instructions are given, with numerous line drawings and photographs. Those instructions can then be applied to the other full plans included: for a dinghy, a motorboat, a rowboat, a canoe, and two other sailboats.
The only other book to compare is Harold Payson's venerable Build the New Instant Boats. But where that book leaves off, this book goes beyond: with chapters on making your own oars, making kick-up rudders, pivoting leeboards, sails, flotation compartments, water ballast, hatches, and tips for cartopping and trailering your boat, and much more. It is an introductory book that will continue to be pored over as the beginner transforms himself or herself into an experienced boatbuilder.
Also included are a catalog of twenty other boat plans for dreaming over, a guide to boatbuilding sites on the web, a guide to materials suppliers, and a bibliography of further reading.
A great book for families, for scout groups, for school shop classes, for anyone who enjoys messing about in boats.
Jim Michalak is a former aerospace engineer who has become, in the last decade, one of the foremost designers of small boats in America. He lives in Lebanon, Illinois.
Customer Reviews:
Gret Book!.......2007-07-30
This book takes you from buying materials to launching the boat. Very thorough step-by-step instructions and easy to read plans.
This book is a winner.......2007-05-22
This book is for anyone that might...or might not...build a boat. You can work from the included plans or order full size from the author. I have started a Jons boat and it is going well. This book has a lot of information and is reasonably priced.
If you only get one boatbuilding book............2007-05-08
I am new to boat building, even new to boating (occasional canoeist), and have been reading a lot of sailing texts and boat building books. This one is the best, period. Experienced boatbuilders find it useful, but for those of us with no experience, it is a primer of basic boat construction. I loved the illustrations in Bolger's books and the other texts that I got through interlibrary loan. I borrowed Harold Payson's books from a friend, but the combination of clear writing with easy to comprehend drawings, and best yet, complete plans for 5 boats, make this the one book you have to have. Even if you have 10 books on boat building, you need this one. I finally decided to build a PD Racer as my first boat (NOT a Michalak design) and this book and the help of Dave Gray of Polysail were ABSOLUTELY the things that got me started and have kept me going. Without this book, I would have a pile of bonfire material and some bad memories, instead of a boat. Thanks Jim. And my next boat will be a Piragua! (And I wonder if an IMB can be rowed and sailed all the way on the Intercoastal?)
Boat building made easy.......2007-02-14
An excellent book that covers all aspects of building small wooden boats delivered in a simple and easy to understand format. Also goes beyound boat building to trailers and beginner sailing tips.
Well done Jim
Grandpa wants to build a boat........2007-01-09
And I think he can. The book presents several boats that are within range of the pocketbook and the infomation, including techniques for building them. This spring I am going to build the flatiron skiff. Versatile, lightweight, and inexpensive, it will be a great project. Grandpa

Book Description
Quite naturally, photosynthesis has achieved massive amounts of attention in recent years. Aside from being the most spectacular physiological process in plant growth, it is actually the key to our dealing with the potentially cataclysmic accumulation of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere. Unfortunately, while information is plentiful, all this attention has resulted in a scattered database on photosynthesis, with no contemporary starting point
at least until now. With the second edition of the Handbook of Photosynthesis, Mohammad Pessarakli once again fills the need for an authoritative and balanced resource by assembling a team of experts from across the globe. Together, they have created a comprehensive reference that in a single volume includes important background information, as well as the most recent research findings on photosynthesis. Completely Revised with Several New Chapters The handbook, a completely updated reworking of the critically acclaimed first edition, details all of the photosynthetic factors and processes under both normal and stressful conditions, covering lower and higher plants as well as related biochemistry and plant molecular biology. Divided into fourteen sections for ease of reference, with nearly 8000 bibliographic citations, the handbook contains authoritative contributions from over 80 scientists. It includes approximately 500 drawings, photographs, tables, and equations- all designed to reinforce and clarify important text material.

In 1946, a Russian-born American psychologist named David P. Boder toured displaced-persons camps throughout Western Europe, interviewing victims of the Nazi terror, most of them Jews. His published reports were not widely circulated, writes editor Donald Niewyk, and in any event few people wanted to talk or hear about the Holocaust so soon after it had ended. With the passage of half a century and the passing of the generation of Shoah, Boder's reports, collected in Fresh Wounds, stand as valuable documents in the world's memory. His interviewees talk about their years in slavery, of disease and death, and of the daily work of living with their Nazi captors. Many of the interviewees went on to live in the United States, and in Israel, where they founded kibbutzim.
Book Description
Every student of the Holocaust knows the crucial importance of survivors' testimonies in reconstructing the crime. Most such accounts, however, were recorded years or even decades after the end of World War II. The survivor narratives that make up this volume, in contrast, were gathered immediately after the war. In 1946, Russian-born American psychologist David P. Boder interviewed 109 victims of Nazi persecutionthe majority of them Jewsin "Displaced Persons" camps across Europe. The thirty-six accounts collected here possess an immediacy and authenticity that might otherwise be questioned in memoirs penned long after the events they detail.
These interviews encompass survivors from Poland, Lithuania, Germany, France, Slovakia, and Hungary, ranging in age from their early teens to their seventies. Their remarkable stories shed light on such controversial subjects as relations between Jews and neighbors or strangers who extended or withheld aid, opportunities for and obstacles to Jewish resistance, the victims' knowledgeor lack of knowledgeabout the fate that awaited them in Nazi hands, survival strategies, women's experience of the Holocaust, the Nazi practice of placing prisoners in charge of their fellow inmates, and the liberators' postwar treatment of freed concentration camp inmates.
In an introduction, Donald Niewyk describes this extraordinary interviewing project and traces the overwhelming obstacles Boder faced in finding an audience for the survivor narratives he collected.
