Book Description
The color of Portugal, the austerity of Germany, and the love of family are the cohesive elements behind "Touching The Moon." In this penetrating and detailed memoir, author John Coutinho provides readers with a distinctive view of a life well lived and remembered as he recalls his boyhood growing up in Washington, DC, his education in Germany, and his later years working with the team that put the Apollo on the moon. Coutinho places readers in the heart of the times and places he describes. He brings his story to life with crystal clear recollection and offers penetrating insight into many of the historical events that transpired, such as Hitler coming into power in Germany, or the excitement of working at Grumman on the Apollo space program and being an instrumental part of putting a man on the moon! In "Touching The Moon," Coutinho does more than deliver an interesting memoir; he provides readers with a glimpse into a bygone era that will remain in history forever.
Customer Reviews:
Both a space history and a memoir.......2004-09-09
Dr. John Coutinho worked for Grumman Aerospace as an engineer/analyst for decades and has written many engineering articles and some books: Touching The Moon examines the people, industries and practices behind putting the first men on the moon, and provides a legacy for any who came after. His is both a space history and a memoir, charting the industry as a whole and its vast changes in practices and attitudes.
A wonderful look at a time gone by.......2004-02-17
This is a book by one of the members of the GREATEST GENERATION. People aren't made like this anymore. A pity.
Looking through the author's eyes, you can live in a time gone by- full of history in the making. Even if you didn't live for much of the time covered in the book, you can become wistful for it.
This is a story of a man from a proud heritage who lived his life as honorably, and steadfast as was possible. It is a life well-lived, and surprisingly entertaining to read about.

Recipes call for the oddest things..........2006-12-27
I started reading the book and was very pumped up on starting the "soy zone". I was so happy to read about how Dr. Sears' Soy Zone recipes are easy and he even gives you a list of foods to stalk your pantry with. Well, then I got to the recipe portion of the book (CH. 5) and I'm taking it back. What the heck is Stevia extract powder or Agar Flakes? Not to mention the endless list of ingredients for each recipe. The first few chapters made it seem like the recipes would be easy and you could get by without spending a ton of money. Unfortunately, I am a student who works and I want to live a healthy lifestyle, but I think I'll just stick to a vegetarian version of South Beach Phase 2!!! Much more practical. Unless you have a ton of time on your hands and have no problem buying a million (okay so that's an exaggeration) different ingredients and are able to cook every single meal at home, then I don't see how this diet is realistic.
5 Stars for Information, 3 Stars for Recipes.......2006-04-15
I'm quite amazed at how my hormonal levels have balanced out using his diet plans for chicken and fish.
I bought the Soy Zone to broaden my food recipes, but the recipes could be a lot better. I don't know anyone who wants to eat 8 ounces of tofu at dinner, or even at one sitting. I think someone on his team needs to do serious research and find better cooks. There's far better food out there which could be converted to the Soy Zone, but if you're a vegetarian, I do feel this is a good place to start.
I lost 35 lbs with this diet.......2005-11-30
Four years ago I lost 35 lbs on the Zone diet and I have kept it all off since then because this diet teaches you a new way of life, a new way to prepare food and truly understand what you are eating. I have been a vegetarian for almost 20 years and this book makes sense and offers healthy meals. I'm only ordering it again because my copy is so worn out. If you want a no nonsense way to lose weight and you can remain dedicated, then this diet WILL work for you, but it's mind set that is a large part of weight loss, you can't just think that buying this book and eating some of the food will make you lose weight.
High Soy High Risk .......2005-06-26
Barry Sears' bestselling Zone diet books have helped millions of Americans get off high carb diets, lose weight, balance blood sugar and boost moods and energy levels. He has even dared to tell readers that "no cholesterol lowering diet study has ever decreased total mortality." Right on. But the regular Zone Diet was challenging for vegetarians, particularly vegans, so Sears came up with THE SOY ZONE, billed as "the healthiest Zone diet ever." Sadly most people who have gone on this high soy protein diet sooner or later sing the low carb blues. More than 70 years of studies link soy to thyroid damage, manifesting most often as hypothyroidism, a cause of weight gain, fatigue and brain fog -- ills people "enter the Zone"to avoid! In addition, soy contributes to many other health problems, including digestive distress, reproductive disorders, infertility, immune system breakdown and even -- health claims to the contrary -- heart disease and cancer. Soy is also widely acknowledged now as one of the top 8 allergens. Contrary to popular myth -- and soy industry marketing hype -- Asians use soy in the diet as a condiment, not a staple food. They not only eat much smaller quantities than found in "The Zone" but different types of soy food. In short, this is a dangerous diet in which possible benefits are far outweighed by proven risks.
much better book than Enter the Zone.......2004-05-20
If you are a vegan, vegetarian, or just a person looking to add more soy into your diet because of the health benefits you've heard about--oh yeah, and you're interested in the Zone way of eating--get this book. One more thing--bypass Sears' frist book "Enter the Zone." First of all, "Enter the Zone" is only offerred in hardback...uh, it's been out for amost 10 years now, so I think a paperback is warranted. Much of "Enter the Zone" is about how fabulous Barry Sears is and how his diet has worked for all these olympic level atheletes--great! But certainly not me. "The Soy Zone," on the other hand, includes all of the important information from "Enter the Zone," including how to calculate your lean body mass in order to figure out your protein needs, and once you've got that, you can figure out how many blocks of protein you need to consume--the basis of the Zone diet. "The Soy Zone" also goes into detail about how the Zone works by regulating insulin and glucagon levels, and everything else you'd need to know--without the self-aggrandizing. And it's in paperback! Wahoo! The recipes offer an easy way to add soy into your diet if you are not a vegetarian/vegan, and if you are a vegetarian/vegan, the recipes show you how to beef up (er, soy up) the amount of protein in your food.

Simple AND Awesome.......2004-10-30
I began salivating as I leafed through this in the bookstore! The Warm Potato Salad with Apple Curry Dressing and Pork Tenderloin with Apple Chutney were perfect for a cool autumn dinner. Hot-as-Hell Chicken on Chinese Noodles was so simple; the sauce almost didn't make it to the table! I'm not a big dessert fan, but some of these are unusual enough that I will definitely give them a try. I enjoyed watching Caprial on PBS and am glad to have found her book. Probably, though, a bit of cooking experience is helpful.
Fantastic!.......2000-07-10
I highly recommend this book for its ease of recipes and use of familiar ingredients. My husband and I are vegetarians, but I much prefer cookbooks that are not vegetarian-exclusive. This volume has a whole section on vegetarian entrees that are just wonderful, as are many of the appetizers and, especially, the desserts. Do add this to your collection; you won't be disappointed.
Practical step-by-step elegance! A must have!.......1999-11-11
This cookbook may look intimidating, but it's not! Great flavor and practicality that even the novice could learn. Dive in and your hooked on Caprial's style! I give this book as gifts and put sticky notes w/ my suggestions. I have about 25 cookbooks and this one is a favorite.
A good recipe book........1999-10-22
Cooking is my hobby and I love to entertain. The first recipe I made from this book was the Pepper- Encrusted Salmon with Green Sauce. You must try it, it's delicious!! Whenever I have to entertain I look at this book but I find that the recipes have either ingredients that I can't find locally or they take too much time. I wish this book had less time consuming recipes like the one mentioned above with more common ingredients and more photographs, they are good guidelines to see if the dish turned out the way it's supposed to. Nevertheless, I have enjoyed this book.
You'd better already know how to cook!.......1999-03-08
The recipes in this book are flavorful and imaginative and for that reason one can overlook the lack of specific direction or omitted steps that appear on nearly every page. That is, of course, unless you are a beginning or inexperienced cook. Watch out, for instance, that in the recipe for Pissaladiere, that you must add the proofed yeast into the flour, and that you must proof the dough again for 20 minutes or so before adding the topping. The topping calls for "10 whole shallots". Shallots have a tremendous range in size. What size or weight should we use? This book is definitely for someone who can call on their own cooking expertise to make up for the lack of specific information.

Sweet stories that will touch the hearts of dog lovers........1999-04-10
These short, quick stories get right to the heart of the shelter worker's life. The plight of the dogs is often ugly and sad, but Lorraine tells the stories in a way that shows how warmth and tenderness always win the day. Each dog she touches, and who touches her, is proof of the inexplicable but wonderful connection we make with animals. In Nobody's Best Friend, there aren't always happy endings, and there are always sad beginnings, but the tales are uplifting nonetheless. You will come away unable to help but admire Lorraine's commitment to make the world a better place (one dog at a time), and if you're not moved to contribute to the cause, check your pulse. As an appendix to the book, Lorraine gives some great advice on choosing and living with your dog whether from a shelter or breeder. The language is unpolished and authentic, and the stories are told in a stream of memory that feels completely natural. Reading this book is like listening to a good friend telling you about her dogs. Curl up somewhere comfortable with your dog, this book, and a mug of your favourite, and bring a box of kleenex.

This book takes you into the ups and downs of an animal shelter workers life. You ride the emotional roller coaster of accomplishments and defeats. The true stories of the animals involved will bring both tears of joy and sadness to your eyes. When you read the last story......all you can say is GIVE ME MORE!!!!! You just want to keep going.
The training tips at the end of the book are not only comprehensive, but in the animals best interest.

Book Description
The value and impact of popular culture are vigorously debated by the authors in this anthology. Popular culture is broad and diverse, including such varied topics as video games, films, fashion, pornography, professional wrestling, and reality TV. Some of the arguments are as new as today's latest technology, while others date back thousands of years.
Book Description
People continue to be concerned about media violence and the marketing of media violence to children. The authors in this anthology examine whether or not media violence is a serious problem, and if so how the government and society should respond.

A wonerful resource.......2000-05-21
This book is a wonderful resource for any project which requires two oppinions on each topic. It combines statistics and accurate facts with stories, opinions and professional stippulation. IT is very clear and easy to use. I recommend this book highly, especially if you feel strongly about a topic, but must defend, or wish to understand the other side of the story.

A true story about the people of Birobidjan, Jewish Autonomous Region, Russia, and two Peace Corps volunteers who came to know and love them.
Customer Reviews:
Like a good conversation on a plane.......2007-03-11
I enjoyed this book and am grateful for Sharon Dirlam making the effort to write it. Ultimately, though, I found the experience a little hollow. The book is a hybrid of a personal accounting of time and a series of reports on people, places and situations encountered. While some of the anecdotes may border on the banal, it does leave the reader with the sense of sharing the day to day rhythm of life in Birobidjan. However, occasional bursts of color do brighten the prose where the author appears to have taken some inspiration from an event or observation - and these make the book worthwhile.
The disappointing part about the book, though, was that it left me without much of a sense of where Sharon starts her journey, what she and her husband were looking for, or whether they found it. The book screams for answers on these point; the reader is gently picked up at the start and gently let down at the end, but there is little attempt to answer "why?" The author appears to lack a willingness to be vulnerable, choosing instead to make the experience more of a polite conversation with the reader; perhaps unconsciously reinforcing the position stated several times in the book that only those who have been through this experience first hand can really appreciate the anecdotes.
Adventure in the Russian Far East.......2006-12-28
'Beyond Siberia'', Sharon Dirlam's account of her two-year sojourn as a Peace Corps teacher brings an unfamiliar part of Russia to life. I found the structure and writing most engaging! While offering a chronological account of hers and her husband's experiences in Birobidjan, Dirlam includes many fascinating details about the life and culture they encountered. 'Zhag za Zhagem' ['step by step', page 54 and later], we see the philosophical and often humorous responses of their Russian friends to the difficult conditions of their daily lives. Dirlam's experience as a travel writer comes through in her vivid observations and pithy reflections.
This book offers a wonderful and varied cast of characters, succinctly telling anecdotes, valuable insights, and some interesting (and not always obvious) contrasts between Russian ways and those of the US. A particularly telling sequence in this regard is the story of Dirlam's return home midway through her tenure in Birobidjan--on Fourth of July.
When I finished this book, I felt like I'd been given a privileged angle of vision on an intriguing part of the world and its inhabitants, the Russian 'Jewish Autonomous Region' as it was once called. Highly recommended to teachers, Peace Corps volunteers, armchair travellers, and anyone with a curiosity about a little-known part of Russia.
Vivid account of living in Russia.......2006-12-20
"Beyond Siberia:Two Years in a Forgotten Place" is a vivid account of an American's experience of living and working in a remote section of Russia. Dirlam's manages to convey objective and insightful views of the people she learned to respect and learn from. It's an especially useful read for anyone planning to work in the Peace Corps, but for those readers like myself, it is one great learning experience that is lacking in many books about Russia. Highly recommended.
A Disappointment.......2006-12-10
As I read these other reviews I'm curious if they were reading the same book that I read. I gave it 2 stars only because I have read worse books. That is not to say that the information in the book is not interesting, or heartfelt, but I just feel poorly written. Dirlam repeats herself in many useless issues, such as the numerous times that she metions the reavealing dress of the russian girls. The book is also a bit scattered, it did not flow well. I would recomend against purchasing this book, rather for an excellent book on siberia read Colin Thurbron's "In Siberia" it will delight and amaze you.
Beyond Siberia is about being human.......2006-11-06
I could feel the Artic chill outside. Inside the room there was the warmth of friends, food, vodka and conversation. Sometimes an old grude is renewed. Always there is spontaneous outburst of group song... old Russian songs, the Beatles, the Beach Boys. "Beyond Siberia" describes life as it is with the struggles and joys, the hardships, the patience and endurance. It's about loyalty and the values of friendships living in this harsh climate region of high unemployment. The harsh realities shape the human body and psyche. It shapes their sense of community.
Sharon Dirlam observes. She observes the world around her with curiosity, intelligence, and a sense of quiet wonder. She is insightful, personal, and objective. It reflects her adventurous spirit, political and social awareness and her desire to bridge cultures through teaching english. It reflects her compassionate nature and sense of humor. This book is Sharon Dirlam's personal journal of 2 years of day-to-day living in this Siberian community with her husband, John, who also taught English. It is a MUST for anyone considering joining the Peace Corps or teaching English as a second language.
