Book Description

Originally published in 1955, As Far as My Feet Will Carry Me has seen international success ever since. It has been translated into fifteen languages, sold more than 12 million copies, and is the basis for an award-winning German entry at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. Recounting an incredible real-life adventure, it tracks the destiny of German soldier Clemens Forrell who, in the aftermath of WWII, was sentenced to twenty-five years of forced labor in a lead mine in the barren eastern reaches of Siberia. Subjected to the brutality of the camp and the climate, Forrell dreamed continuously of escape—and then daringly effected it. From East Cape across the vast trackless wastes of Siberia, for thousands of miles and three years, with fear as his most intimate companion, Forrell fled treachery and endured some of the most inhospitable conditions on earth. In a long series of taped interviews with esteemed German author Josef M. Bauer, Forrell unfolded his remarkable story of survival. Bauer not only reconstructs Forrell’s arduous journey to the Iranian frontier and freedom; he also poignantly evokes the emotional content of Forrell’s brave quest—emerging as an affecting portrait of a man who strove and triumphed against all odds.

1 out of 5 stars Don't even think of buying this junk.......2007-09-22

I was very, very dissapointed with this book. After having read the amazing story of Theodor Kröger (a German who survived not only the Tsarist prisons but also the communist gulags) I wanted more of this and so I ordered this book. But what I got was a kind of telegram-style book with so much ommisions in the story, that you wonder why did somebody write it at all. If you can't get the story right, then don't tell it. Also, this is supposed to be a non-fiction story, but the dialogues between the lead character and his captors and/or fellow-prisoners are put on paper like they were held yesterday. If you're looking for a Papillon story, you better look somewhere else. I didn't even finish the book, it was a waste of my time.

5 out of 5 stars a wild ride.......2007-07-26

I found this book to be inspiring and motivational. It is the amazing tale of a daring escape and a treacherous journey across the frozen Siberian north. They only thing that disappointed me was that the ending was anti-climactic in my opinion. Just a simply amazing book, there is a reason why it has been translated in to 15 languages and sold more then 12 millon copies.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing .......2007-05-07

All the superlatives belong to this tale: remarkable, daring, unbelievable, amazing, incredible, beyond belief, extraordinary. That a person could 1. escape from a Soviet labor camp, 2. in the dead of winter, 3. from the farthest eastern point of Siberia, 4. after suffering from hunger and brutal treatment for three years, and still 5. make it home to Germany safely after another three years is a story for all lovers of survival dramas. The author expertly and faithfully chronicles Josef Bauer's account without glossing over the details of what it took to survive. I didn't come to like Mr. Bauer from this telling, however, I did feel a deep respect for his perseverance and stamina. Two other books of escape and survival that I recommend even more highly are: The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom by Slavomir Rawicz and We Die Alone: A WWII Epic of Escape and Endurance by David Howarth.

4 out of 5 stars As Far as my Feet will Carry me.......2007-01-29

Incredible story of survival and the will to live.

5 out of 5 stars This book was excellent, I couldn't put it down........2006-04-28

As for the other half negative reviews, like it being for a young reader, don't pay any attention to that. Obviously those reviews are written by people that can't look or think beyond their own egos nor actually try to imagine what it must have been like, what the permanent affects were after such an altering event, and obvious emotional scars that must have continued on and on... After I finished the book, I re-read the preface and understood why there seemed to be pieces "I" wanted answers to, but understood why they weren't there.

I recommend this book to anyone of all ages. It's absolutely an amazing account of someone accomplishing a journey home with EVERYTHING against him and the beckoning door of death at every turn. How he survived? It's beyond me....

Now, I will hunt for the DVD....if anyone knows where I can find the DVD, please find a way of letting me know. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent account of the frontline........2001-09-18

Jack Gordon takes you through the details of being on the front line in WWII. It's riveting to the point where you can actually picture yourself there with him. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and wished it was longer - I found myself wanting to know more. This is by no means a fluff piece, but a true account of what goes on in the military hierarchy and between peers, as well as the savage brutality of war.

5 out of 5 stars A graphic memoir from the front lines of World War II.......1999-07-03

Gordon brings to life his first hand experiences from the shores of Normandy through Paris into Germany to the end of the war. I recommend this book to all those who have not had to fight in a war, as it gives the reader the opportunity to see real war from the front lines. The book is written in a way that might give the impression that this is a non-fiction book.

Unfortunately, the experiences were very true. Not recommended for young children(under 10). Would be a good book for a junior high school or high school history class.

. . .I have also a piece of good news to communicate, which will, I hope, lead to very favorable results for me. I think I told you when I left for Paris that my chief anxiety was lest I might not be allowed to examine, and still less to describe, the fossil fishes and their skeletons in the Museum. Knowing that Cuvier intended to write a work on this subject, I supposed that he would reserve these specimens for himself. I half thought he might, on seeing my work so far advanced, propose to me to finish it jointly with him, --but even this I hardly dared to hope. It was on this account, with the view of increasing my materials and having thereby a better chance of success with M. Cuvier, that I desired so earnestly to stop at Strasbourg and Carlsruhe, where I knew specimens were to be seen which would have a direct bearing on my aim. The result has far surpassed my expectation.

This is a rich resource for anyone interested in Agassiz or science in the age of Humboldt and Darwin, especially American science, but there are some things that potential buyers should be aware of.

This book consisits largely (over 80%) of letters written by Agassiz, and sometimes written to him by prominent scientists like Humboldt. The rest consists of introductions and links written by Agassiz's wife. This prevents it from being the kind of comprehensive biography that some readers might be looking for. It's better to start with the Lurie biography, which also offers a better understanding of the scientific era and issues in which Agassiz was involved. This book doesn't do justice to the fact that Agassiz was a highly controversial figure; you would barely guess that he was a major opponent of Darwin and thus destroyed his scientific reputation. This book goes beyond being Agassiz-friendly and into the realm of being a whitewash of history. A publishing defect of this book is that it lacks a functional index: it does have a list of subjects but they have no page numbers; maybe the page numbers never got transferred from the original book to this reprint edition. Another small defect is that the letters and linking texts are often not clearly separated. The positive side of this book is that it does reveal Agassiz more candidly than the Lurie biography.

Facts are healthier than fads. New myths and theories about nutrition splash across the headlines every day. Americans spend over $12 billion a year on worthless-even dangerous-nutrtion products. Total Nutrition replaces fads and ignorance with scientific fact."A feast of information," says USA Today. What's the best way to give a baby a healthy start? What is the right diet for someone with diabetes or heart disease or arthritis? Do sugar and food additives make children hyperactive? Can foods and vitamins protect against disease? How do foods and medicines interact? What weight-loss diet is both safe and effective? What should an athlete eat for top performance? The thinking person's guide to nutrition: With forty-one chapters packed with expert medical advice and over two hundred tables, illustrations, and sample menus, this book gives the clear, authoritative answers to all of these questions and more. As fitness broadcaster and columnist Gabe Mirkin, M.D., says, "It is so full of solid scientific information about food that everyone should own a copy."

This book is very old. If I would have known the majority of references would be to events and studies before 1988 I never would have bought this book. Twenty years ago is a long time in the nutrition field.

If it ignores biochemical individuality and pretends that all foods have the same effects on all bodies, the book is worthless and very dangerous nutritionally. It will certainly help some, though that is only because around 50% of people in the world would apply to its recommendations. For instance, foods can have different effects in different bodies.

If you want to know more about your body type before you begin a nutritional program, I suggest the following books instead. Most of the information presently known is from the sympathetic system side and very little is known about the autonomic, though these recommendations can protect you from such false suggestions of a 'common good program' for all people.

Know thyself, before you make a nutritional plan. With the following books you can:

Day, Phillip. 2001. Health Wars. Kent, England: Credence Publications.

Wiley, Rudolf A, Ph.D. 1989. Biobalance: The Acid/Alkaline Solution to the Food-Mood-Health Puzzle. M.D. Foreword by Howard E. Hagglund. Hurricane, Utah: Essential Science Publications.

Kristall, Harold J, D. D. S, and James M Haig, N.C. 2002. The Nutrition Solution: A Guide to Your Metabolic Type. M.D. Foreword by John R. Lee. Berkeley, California: North Atlantic Books.

Kliment, Felicia Drury. 2002. The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet: An Innovative Program for Ridding Your Body of Acidic Wastes. Chicago, Illinois: Contemporary Books.

If you are not one that wants the truth. Do not read this book. If you are sick of being ripped off at the super market and the BS health stores that steal your cash with fake pills and powders, then this is for you. This book is filled with nothing but facts that are solid as a rock. Nothing else.

If you want to see it some other way you can go ahead and fool yourself by ignoring the facts written here. Many of these things are not even a debate. They are simply the truth.

Reading this made me realize why so many doctors and people with a solid education in this field that I know laugh at all of the stupid rip off ads and all the money wasted.

A fact:More money is wasted on the BS, lies, and scams this book tells about than spent on proven health care by professionals. Health care that does something more than empty your wallet.

There are a great many detailed instructions at the beginning of the book which is its best value I am a novice with chinese food. I haven't tried any of the recipes yet, but am looking at a crab and asparagus dish.

I enjoy cooking a great deal and like to experiment with different culture's cuisine. I own a vast collection of cookbook, but must confess that this is by far one of my favorites. It has a vast array of recipes. Unfortunately the ingrediates are not easily found in typical supermarkets. The recipes that I have tried are delicious, there are grea pictures and the instructions are easy to follow. I strongly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars For those not daunted by prep work..........2006-05-08

I've made some dishes from this book since receiving it two weeks ago - Ants Climbing a Tree (love the Chinese people's play on words; it's actually cellophane noodles with ground pork), Spinach in Bean Curd Cheese, Yangchow Fried Rice, Roast Pork Belly, and Beef Fried Rice. All have been tasty and well-liked by me and my family.

However, this is not the book for those looking for very quick, 4-ingredient type meals. For most of the recipes, there is need for numerous ingredients and much chopping, cutting, and other prep work. I'll take the Ants Climbing a Tree as an example. The noodles have to be soaked in boiling water. You then prepare the marinade, mince and marinate the meat, chop/mince/grate your other ingredients, and stir-fry; then cook everything together. The actual cooking is quick but, the prep work does take considerable time. I found this to be especially so in the Roast Pork Belly, which needs to be pricked, "painted," marinated, air-dried, and then finally, roasted. I have made roast pork belly in the past by simply (a) pressure cooking to tenderize the meat, and (b) seasoning and roasting in the oven - a process that was much less laborious with an extremely delicious end product. As such, I am not keen on repeating the labor-centric recipe for this in the book. For the other main dishes, I will simply plan on making them when I don't have to have dinner on the table in less than an hour.

The pictorial guide to ingredients is extremely beneficial and much appreciated. As my grocery store does not stock 99% of these ingredients, it will be helpful when I go to the Asian supermarket this weekend to stock up.

Altogether, I like the book and the dishes I've made so far, and I'm looking forward to making more (if not all) from it.

5 out of 5 stars easy to follow and a treat to eat.......2006-04-22

I received this book for Christmas and I have been cooking chinese food like mad crazy ever since. The best section of the book is the beginning which gives an overview of different chinese ingredients which might be unfamiliar to the novice. I've had success with each and every recipe I have tried---from the Tossed Noodles with Ginger and Scallions to Sweet Corn Soup. My favorite is the Dry-fried Four-Swason Beans on page 203. And also, my brother had been talking for months and months of a crispy seaweed dish that he loved to eat at chinese restaurants in England. I never had any idea what he was talking about until I found the "Seaweed" recipe in this book. It was so easy to make and he said that it was just as he remembered. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to start experimenting with Chinese food in the kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars THE book to have for Chinese cooking........2006-03-02

Having grown up in Shanghai, I consider myself fairly familiar with authentic Chinese food. I have used many different Chinese cookbooks both written in Chinese and English, and Yan-Kit's Classic Chinese Cookbook is by far the best. For anyone who is not familiar with the ingredients and methods unique to Chinese culture, the book's first few chapters provide a great introduction. I have tried maybe 1/3 of the recipes, and all of them lead to good results. I highly recommand this excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Not just good on paper, this has genuine practical value.......2003-11-26

I was under the impression that my daughter (now 31/2) was the way she was as a baby (difficult, to say the least) because I was lacking parental intuition and frankly, skill. Since adding a second child to the mix, I now see how different 2 children can be. This was similiarly experienced by the book's author, who now is delivering an actual strategy for determining some of the reasons why children are so unique and how to best parent them. This kind of "custom parenting" based on temperament is a new idea to me, and reading this book validated a lot of things I was already doing, as well as offering a lot of suggestions.

As an RN, as well, I am appreciative of the research that was involved in the development of the strategies in the book, and hope to put them to good use.

The last comment I have, is that it also contains a chapter entitled "Parents Are People, Too". I usually receive my input on how I'm doing as a mom from my husband and parents, but found this chapter to be very empathetic, and related to so much of it.

With that, I hope other people find this book to be helpful, and interesting to read. Happy Parenting!

                                  Book Description

Jaap Penraat can't understand the Germans' hatred of his Jewish neighbors in his hometown of Amsterdam. As the restrictions multiply and the violence escalates, Jaap knows he must take action to help his friends. He begins by using his father's printing press to forge identification cards and papers for Jewish neighbors and refugees, but as the Nazi grasp tightens, he is forced to take a more drastic path--leading twenty Jews on the dangerous first leg of a journey to Paris, the start of the underground pipeline to safety.

This initial group of twenty men is only the beginning; the number eventually grows to over four hundred Jews saved from certain death by Jaap Penraat's heroic efforts, brought to life in this vivid retelling.

5 out of 5 stars Forging Freedom: A True Story of Heroism During The Holocaust.......2006-08-22

During World War 2, Jaap Penraat a non-Jew risked his life to save 406 Jewish people. He was a man of great courage and character and with his friend, author Hudson Talbott, they tell the story of the dangers he confronted in getting Jewish people out of Holland before the Nazis captured them.

This book introduces the Holocaust to children and offers every reader regardless of age some valuable lessons in taking compassionate action on behalf of those in desperate need.

5 out of 5 stars *To do 'mitzvahs ' for Freedom was his calling . . . *.......2006-01-31

"Forging Freedom" impresses me with its factual account of Jewish people in the Netherlands suffering the terrifying power of Adolph Hitler in 1940. Here the impact of Hudson Talbott's art is significant; using somber tones, sometimes in the style of educational graphics, he makes his points dramatically.

Jaap Penraat grew to manhood having friends who were Jewish. His early neighborly task of lighting the Sabbath lights for Jewish families in his apartment block was considered to be a "mitzvah" - a kindness, a deed done from the heart. Not much later his heart responded to the terrible needs of hundreds of people in Amsterdam: for food, clothes, places to hide. There were few who understood the fate of those who were rounded up & taken away in boxcars.

But Jaap rushed ahead to devise a plan, falsifying passports & permits, and then brashly playing the role of transport leader so that a group of young men could be guided to "jobs of national importance" in the German defense industry - - when in reality they were being passed along an underground network from Holland through Belgium & France, to freedom in Spain & England.
At parting, Jaap and his childhood friend & refugee, Bram Dorland, gave each other the same message: "L'chaim" . . . "To Life".

There is a surprising immediacy in the way Talbott's message is conveyed. He could not be old enough to have a personal consciousness of that time. "Forging Freedom" published in 2000, tells its story hoping there is alsways another generation to teach the next the moral necessity of standing up for what is right. The fact that the bold courage of Jaap Penraat was recognized as a heroic by both the Dutch government and a Holocaust Commission backs up the authenticity to mcHAIKU's satisfaction. The important fact is that we must never forget.

Forging Freedom is a wonderful book. I have always hated reading about the Holocaust, but I loved reading Forging Freedom. This book is exciting, descriptive, and it really informs you about what it was like to be a Jew in Amsterdam during the 1940s. I think it is a great book for kids of all ages. I recommend this book to kids who want to read a nonfiction book that is easy to read, interesting, and concise.Forging Freedom is about a man named Jaap in Amsterdam during the 1940s. Even though he was not a Jew he risked his life to save his Jewish friends and neighbors. By the end of the War, he had saved over 400 lives.

5 out of 5 stars Forging Freedom: a very well done book.......2002-02-12

I read forging freedom during the war unit in my eighth grade english class. i thought it was a great book, and a great amount of infomation of how the jews were treated during halocost. after reading it i was amazed of how brave Jaab was and how clever he was. when my teacher told me that Jaab and Hudson were coming to my school, I was amazed. they were great guys, and having jaab talk to us about it in person was amazing. i also found out that jaab lived in the same town as me, all those times i had a brave man in my backyard and had no idea. this book was great and should be read by all ages so they can learn that brave people do exist and that the halocost was a very dangerous time and also a cruel time.

4 out of 5 stars Great Story of the Holocaust.......2001-03-10

I liked Forging Freedom even though it was sad at times. It was an easy to understand telling of the events of the the Holocaust. Our class was fortunate enough to meet the author and the man who the main character was based on. I was astonished to learn of the poor and terrible way that the Jews were treated. The main character was brave enough to aid his Jewish friends in gaining freedom. My favorite part of the story was when Jaap successfully snuck passed the guards. It was very suspenseful and I felt like cheering and was happy for him. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Holocaust stories. I have also read Number the Stars and Snow Treasure which were on the same topic. I enjoyed both of them as well. They helped me to understand the details of the Holocaust.
