A leader in the field!.......2005-10-13
This is simply the best book writen on this subject. Many books make bold claims, but DR Bland takes complicated subjects and makes them easily undestandable. This book makes sense andis backed with links to appropriate studies. He doesn't expect yo to leap blindly. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the latest in healthcare technology.
Marketing materials?.......2005-06-28
Large portions of the text are repetitive. The term 'Genetic Nutritioneering' is repeated a few time on every page. The material on genetics is highly simplified, and really has no impact on the nutritional advice.
Bland suggests we take control of our genes, which isn't a bad idea. In Bland's terms, we need to learn to 'express' the genes for health. The genes that worked hard in youth can be encouraged to express themselves, again. While this is a nice slogan, its meaning is very vague. What isn't going to 'express' some gene? What is key step in a gene's expression? What causes a bad gene to be expressed? How does one deal with a race between two genes seeking expression?
The pragmatist wants some process for quickly assessing what a specific food or supplement will do for their metabolism. Everyone has a somewhat different metabolism and somewhat different set of foods which are easy to digest. Most of the people reading 'nutrition' books are interested primarily because they see their digestive system as unique and special. Thus, it seems logical to look for advice that goes past 'population wide' recommendations. Towards these ends, Bland is vague. For example, at one point Bland advises the reader to stop eating tomatoes for a few days. This test will determine if tomatoes cause an unpleasant gene to be expressed, one that causes gastro-intestinal distress. Most people would have run this simple test long before they knew anything about genetics. At other times, Bland simply quotes the standard 'population wide' recommendation.
In my view, the suggestions don't really rise above 'eat the right fruits and vegetables and you will feel better.'
the best book on the subject!.......2000-02-03
this book is simply the best on the subject, and it shows how proper nutrition with suplements can control genetic diseases.in the past ,the world of medicine was sure that there is nothing to do with genetic-diseases,but no more!.this book explains these mecanisms in a realy wonderful way.you will have a better understanding on genetics wether you are an unhealthy person or a therapist of any kind(especialy natural-healer).we are not changing our genes,we are only give them a better nutrition in order to make them express themselves in the best healthy way.this book is highly recommanded!.
A book that helped.......2000-01-26
Too often health books fail to deliver anything other than conjecture and unsubstantiated claims. This is one book on my health that made sense and gave me the tools to make rationale decisions about my health future. I liked the way the book took complicated scientific issues and made them accessible to me years before my doctor would understand them. I recommend this book for anyone wanting the latest in health research that can be applied to their own lives.
21st Century Medicine and Nutrition.......2000-01-17
The focus on this book is to bring the latest research on how to create from a person's genetic template the best health outcomes as they age using personalized nutrition and lifestyle tailoring. The book is science-based from both the clinical research experiences of the author in the Functional Medicine Research Center and from the hundreds of scientific studies from other researchers cited in the extensive bibliography. This is a "how to" book as much as a description of when, why and where medicine will be changing to become "personalized medicine" in the 21st century.

Straight from the Keys, Delicious Dishes for Everybody.......2006-10-13
Keys Cuisine is one of the five best Florida/Gulf Coast cookbooks out there. Well, that's my opinion. I've been updating my Amazon "So You'd Like to Guides" and I have one on Key Lime Pie. Take a look at it if you want. Anyway, I've included fifty cookbooks (the maximum Amazon will allow) in all my guides, so I've had a chance to go through my collection. And quite a collection it is, I've got hundreds of cookbooks and I go through them all the time. That's my problem, how to organize them. While going through what I wanted to include in my guides, I started separating them into piles, the ones I couldn't live without and the ones, if I absolutely had to, I could give away as gifts, you know, like if we moved into a very small place.
Keys Cuisine is one I could never part with. I love the food and the atmosphere of Florida and the Gulf Coast, have spent a lot of time there, as I'm a sailing lady. I'm also somewhat of a gourmet chef. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, or galley, depending if I'm at home in the States or on our boat in the Caribbean. The recipes here will make your family, or even just yourself, if you live alone, drool. They are mouthwatering good and that's the truth.

problem with key lime pie.......2004-01-29
I used the recipe for " Manny's Key Lime Pie" p.189 All seemed to be going well - the key lime mixture tasted great. Problem was that the directions said to "beat the egg yolks and condensed milk until creamy". It did not say to cook it. I thought this was problematic. All those eggs yolks should have been cooked, not just beaten. I followed the book instructions and only cooked it when I had made the meringue and placed it on top. I cooked it for the required 5 minutes but it was still very liquidy. I have it in the freezer right now and am hoping that it works. Did you miss in the recipe ? Should it have been cooked instead of beaten ???
The most comprehensive guide to the Florida Keys.......1999-06-22
I found this to be the ultimate way to "eat" my way up and down the Florida Keys. Then to be able to take the flavors with me and prepare them at home is a real treat.
One of my favorites!.......1999-06-03
This is an awesome cookbook! If you are interested in adding fish to your diet in unique ways, this cookbook is a must-have! There are also tons of other recipes, including a whole chapter devoted to key limes, and the recipes are well written and easy to follow. I have eaten at Marker 88,home of one of the featured chefs in the book, and the recipe for Andre's Snapper Rangoon is to die for! I find the recipes very innovative and delicious!

This book is good. It provides some basic technics on methods of training. I personally prefered "how to help gun dogs train themselves". But, this was a good book with good training ideas.
The Ultimate Guide to Bird Dog Training.......2002-03-06
This book is GREAT! My husband got me interested in training bird dogs after going on a quail hunt recently. I reviewed the books on Amazon that were available on the subject and chose this one to get an idea of what bird dog training would entail. I was skeptical that I could actually do this. I am hooked. This book made so much since to me! I am ready to get started with a puppy today. It is a lot of work I know but this book is an excellent way to get started. I know it will be an excellent resource after I get my pup. I have talked with a few folks that actually raise and train pointing dogs and they say I'm on the right track. I highly recommend this book.
The Ultimate Guide to Bird Dog Training.......2002-02-28
I ordered this book in hopes of receiving an up to date training book. I was somewhat disappointed. The book looks like it is a new updated training book; and even states inside that it contains the authors older material with new updated training methods, but I found it to be only dated marerial. The pictures are from the 70's, and not good ones at that. I do feel like the methods would work for a person training a pointer; I was trying to obtain information in the training of a lab for upland game, and this book was lacking in that reguards. If you are looking for a newer material, you may want to check other sources. I am trying The Labrador Shooting Dog next.
Ultimate Bird Dog Book.......2002-02-27
An excellent oveview for starting a pointing dog puppy. Uses techniques from various trainers. Highly recommend.. It works too!

In order to be a registered "Llewellin", a Setter must be directly descended from 6 particular "pillars", or foundation dogs, that resulted from the breeding kennels of two nineteenth century Englishmen, Purcell Llewellin and Edward Laverack. Llewellin bloodlines include Bondhu, Bomber, Gladstone, Tony O, Royacelle and Blizzard. Combinations of these lines have produced some of the finest grouse, pheasant and quail dogs ever. They are excellent for National Shoot To Retrieve and National Challenge competitions.
Book Description
For decoy enthusiasts and collectors who want to replicate the grace, flow, and imperfections found in antique duck decoys, this resource presents the process for carving the traditional, streamlined wood replicas. Chapters focus on every aspect of this classic art form—from selecting the proper wood and cutting out the head and eyes to body surface and tail detail. Additional sections offer tips on the painting of decoys, including information on selecting a color palette, blending paint lines, mixing paints, glazing, and aging by employing both ding-and-dent technology and water- and heat-stress methods.

Antique-style duck decoys.......2007-03-12
Another great book by Tom Matus. I finished both projects in the book and I'am very pleased with the results. The book has great pictures and clear instructions. Tom tells you how to carve, paint and antique birds. The wood duck was a hard paint job for me but the end result was worth it. Thanks J. Mallory
Another Great Book by a Master.......2007-01-15
After buying and trying Tom's first book. I was amazed that in the end, I had a decoy I could be proud of; all on my first try. I am not a stranger to woodworking so having a band saw and drill press helps, but you can always find a friend with one or order roughed out blanks on the internet. This book is a great opportunity to try another style of decoy. It is not a follow-on but stands independantly with start to finish photos and detail. The spring Woodcarving Illustrated has a companion Wood Duck Hen to the book's feature Drake. After talking with Tom Matus via web ring, the first thing I learned was this is art, not science. Variations are okay and his sketches are by hand. My first duck sits on my mantle, but it is water ready. That is the goal by the way. Nothing prouder than hunting over your own "rig"

No-Nonsense Guide to Culinary Herbs and Spices.......2000-05-09
This is the most comprehensive and authoritative guide to edible herbs and spices in such a small format. 280 species are listed, with clear color photographs, and concise descriptions of origin, history, culinary and other uses. Included is information you won't find in other books, including international production by country, and names of each herb or spice in Latin, English, German, French and Italian. And unlike many other herb books, this impressive encyclopedia isn't just about Mediterranean herbs -- it covers the globe. You won't find any crafts, recipes, or pictures of vinegar with herbs. It's small enough to pack for travel, hiking, or shopping at the nursery or Asian grocery store; any other guide with comparable content weighs in at 8lbs! The only shortcoming is that different varieties of major herbs, like the myriad mints and thymes, aren't covered individually.

Book Description

A Story of an Amazing Search for "The" True Religion.......2006-12-08
Abraham Carmel's story is truly inspirational. It reminds us that our priorities in life today are so misdirected. This man had one goal that he centered his life on: Finding a religion that he could flourish with, and that did not leave him full of doubt and contradiction. Like other reviewers, I had the privilege of being a student of Mr. Carmel (of blessed memory), but I knew little of his journey until I read this amazing book.
A remarkable man.......2003-06-16
A convoluted and strange path indeed.
Mr. Carmel, of blessed memory found his spritual home in a most unlikely place, and only after diligent search and much discouragement: from his family, his colleagues, and for quite some time, from the community he sought to join. He found joy and contentment as a high school English teacher. To hear Shakespeare from his mouth was an experience, but to be privileged to have known him well and to have been one of his students was a singular honor. Shunned for the most part by his family, he never married; his funeral was so large that traffic and bus lines had to be diverted for the crowd that assembled outside the Yeshivah of Flatbush High School. Such was the measure of the love his students and his adopted People had for him.
A remarkable man.
May his memory be for a blessing.
Conversion to Judaism.......2002-05-10
In the process of finding my way from the Episcopal Church to life as a Jew, this is one of the most power things that I read and re-read. It gives one an idea of where to go when the idea that Jesus was God incarnate no longer holds. I have recommended this book to everyone I have met on the path to conversion, and others with crises of faith, for over 25 years. It is still one of my most beloved books.
Touched by this gentle soul.......2001-04-12
The story of Mr. Carmel's spiritual journey is very worthwhile reading. His strange path from Anglican priest, to Roman Catholic priest and subsequent conversion to Judaism is well told. His modest, gentle and generous nature will come through to any reader. Plus it's very well written. After all he spent the latter part of his life as an English teacher.
I had the priviledge of meeting this wonderful gentleman, may he rest in peace. I approached him, and got to know him, because I found his story fascinating. Unfortunately he retired from teaching at my high school before I could formally become his student.
