Book Description
One Foot on the Ground is a collection of short pieces on early aircraft in America and aviators, as experienced by Paul I. Roxin, himself a pilot and flight instructor prior to World War II. Roxin's 60-some stories are highly readable, lively and entertaining, and gives the reader a bird's-eye view of what early aviation was like in this country, from its rudimentary beginnings through World War II. The articles frequently cite the exploits (and sometimes misadventures) of well-known persons such as Charles Lindbergh, Douglas MacArthur, lowell Thomas, and James Doolittle, as well as others of lesser fame such as "Getaway Gertie," Marvin "Pee Wee" Horstman, and Doug "Wrong Way" Corrigan.

Customer Reviews:
Well-written memoir of historic aviators and aviation.......2003-10-28
From a first-time author, the anecdotes in this book quite readbly record much of the aviation history of the Rochester, NY, area and elsewhere in the United States. Involved in aviation for more than 60 years, Paul Roxin captures the character, adventures and challenges of general aviation since the 1930s.
In the centennial year of the Wright Brothers' historic flights at Kill Devil Hills, N.C., this book deservedly has attracted the attention of officials in the Pentagon, in Pensacola, the US Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Smithsonian Institution.
For a member of the Geriatric Pilots Association, this book is a fine accomplishment.

Right on the Money.......2003-08-30
I purchased this book as a "sequel" to another Liz Applegate book, Eat Smart, Play Hard. This is a must read for anyone interested in performing his/her best at a favorite physical activity or simply desiring a more healthy lifestyle. Since making a few changes to my diet I have lost weight and improved my performance during my endurance activities. What you eat and when you eat it truly matters. Like anything else, there is no magic here. You won't instantly smoke all your buddies on your next group bike ride if you make some changes to your diet. However, you can maximize your current abilities and set the stage for more physical gains. I have never felt better both during and post exercise. No fad diets will be found here. What you will find is a common sense approach to a lifestyle that is centered around healthy eating and exercise. Ms. Applegate is both encouraging of a healthy diet and realistic enough to know people need to have "comfort" foods every once in awhile. This book stands above the "fad diet of the week" chaos cluttering the bookstores.

low carb eating.......2007-02-11
This is a very helpful book for anyone trying to follow a low carb diet. The only negative aspect of the book is the choice of the printers to accentuate aspect of the recipies in an almost unreadable ink color. In all other fashions this book is an inexpensive guide to low carb cooking.

Book Description
A richly illustrated dictionary with full explanations of more than 1,000 terms and phrases used by horsemen past and present.
Book Description
A complete compendium of equestrian terms, THE HORSEMAN'S ILLUSTRATED DICTIONARY goes beyond simple words and phrases. In addition to providing easy-to-understand definitions of both esoteric and commonly used terms, Steven D. Price delves into their fascinating derivations. You'll learn, for example, that the name of the Percheron draft horse comes from the breed's origins in the La Perche area of Normandy, France; that "bishoping"--doctoring a horse's teeth to show a younger age--refers to an unscrupulous eighteenth-century horse dealer named Bishop; and that the "canter" gait is a shortened version of "Canterbury gallop," purportedly inspired by the pilgrims who rode to Canterbury at that pace. You'll discover that a "coop" does not necessarily hold chickens; find out why an "alligator" might be found in a horse arena; and learn that an "elevator" does not carry passengers but fits in a horse's mouth.
Edifying and entertaining, THE HORSEMAN'S ILLUSTRATED DICTIONARY is both a useful reference work and a lively, panoramic view of the culture and history of the horse. This beautifully illustrated volume proves that horse people of all interests can learn to speak one another's language. It makes a perfect gift for any horse lover.

Love this book!.......2004-12-10
This was exactly what I was searching for...beautiful, inspiring photos of projects that you can easily do for yourself. If has great graphic designs you can copy and use for stenciling, stamping, etc. Loved the cardboard spear and the textiles.
I must have bought 10 other books on exotic decor, ethnic decor and this is the only one that really thrilled me.
Wonderful.......2003-03-25
Shephard created a book satiated with texture, woven in embroidery of dyes and rituals. In African Accents, the author shares with us her stories through textiles. She recreates African accents for readers who have formerly collected pieces of cultural tradition and for the newly converted. Scanning through the craft section of any bookstore, one could notice a scarcity of African crafts, house style, and decorating books. With this book, Shephard undertakes a worthy task. The author's time spent in Senegal piqued her already flourishing interest in African design. Shephard prefaces each chapter with anecdotes, the significance of fiber technique, and facts about the fabrics used for the easy to follow hand-made crafts she shares later in the book. The author separates the fabric regionally and explains the social and rich cultural aspects tied into the various designs and processes.
The first part of the book is devoted to recreating the essence of each separate style of fabric, (that is, if you choose to). Some fabric recreations are simple and others are intricate including embroidery and weaving. Shephard cautions that replicating the fabric does not replace the real thing, but could rather deepen one's appreciation for the years of apprenticeship. In reproducing the designs on the fabrics, the book includes actual sized symbols with their meaning. Some of the Ashanti designs on the fabrics, the author indicates, are the equivalent of the European family crest.
In part two of the book the chapters are devoted to each room of your home and the art of gift giving. Secrets and tricks are provided to lend your pillows, clocks and picture frames the professional touch. There is certainly no limitation of "how to" procedures. I tried a few myself and although the suggestion of the staple gun for the kente stool fell short of my expectation (probably the gun itself) I pulled out the old hammer and nail and my stool looked unfailingly as Shephard had promised. Some of the crafts, if you were not handy with a sewing machine would be better left to the local tailor. Yet, there was a time when a sewing machine was a staple in most family's homes. The art of sewing and the practicality of its uses have been forgotten. But if sewing seems impossible for you, Shephard happily offers other easy alternatives.
This is a consummate reason for a recommendation of this slim book to be on the shelves of all art leagues. The book makes it apparent that Spanish and French artists popular in the 19th and 20th centuries have gained much of their appeal with the use of African art infused with their own. Shephard's passion for the continent exudes throughout the book, aquatinting the reader with crafts and fabric otherwise inaccessible. It is a craft-book du nouveau, a comprehensive history lesson, and a full color tabletop book. It is a significant forefront of a happily growing movement. Through this thoughtful undertaking the beauty of the textiles, that have been admired and used for years, could now have intimate meanings and representations. Choosing that kente, Kuba or mudcloth after reading Shephard's book will add new substance to its use.

GOOD...............2001-09-28
I enjoyed lisa's book but I'm not much of a craftsperson. I love african style, and came away with some good ideas. Some of these projects require more than I am willing to give. I'm into simplistic projects that look like there was alot of effort. The projects range from easy to not so easy. The are some good internet sources but some of them are no longer avalible. I have not attempted any of the crafts in the book but I'm looking foreward to Lisa's next release (coming out in October). I think her next release may be what I'm looking for.
Lisa Shepard's African Accents Has Great Decorating Ideas!.......2000-09-13
Ms. Shepard's knowledge and appreciation for African textiles and crafts is shown with style throughout this book. The craft instructions are clear and easy to follow (even for a novice craftsperson like myself!) The photographs are terrific also, they act as real motivators to try some of these great decorating ideas. How refreshing to see a crafts and decorating book with culturally diverse appeal!
More Than "Just Another" Decorating Book.......2000-03-26
African Accents by Lisa Shepard is more than just another book with homey decorator projects for the Do-It-Yourselfer. As Shepard makes clear in her introduction, her passion for genuine African fabrics is based on admiration for their strong colors and designs coupled an educated appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into their creation.
Since she recognizes that collection of these beautiful fabrics may well be beyond the reach of the average pocketbook, she sets out to teach us how to duplicate the look with affordable materials and then provides detailed instructions for sophisticated decorating projects that are reasonably easy to accomplish.
Make your own stamps with potatoes, compressed sponges or rubber stamps to get the look of Adinkra cloth. Shepard provides over 20 different Adinkra symbols to copy together with their African names and meanings.
Choose from over a dozen images to create unique Korhogo designs (and I dare you to resist trying the panels and floor cloth projects in the book). Try mudcloth, Kuba cloth or Kasaii velvet.
The instructions are clear and the power of the designs would enhance just about any room in your home or office.
They would also be fairly easy for a school group or Scout troop to teach children about the strength and beauty of the cultures they represent. I can easily imagine a group of kids having a good time creating Adinkra stamps at a children's birthday party.
Shepard expresses the hope that working on the projects will increase the readers appreciation for the real thing. A quick glance through this lovely book will convince you.

"Six Male Child Prodigies (perhaps) + An Author in 4th Dimension".......2005-12-02
"Nature's Gambit", David Feldman & Lynn Goldsmith, NY, Basic Books, Inc., 1986 ISBN 0-465-04861-7, HC, 251 pg. plus 8 pg. Notes & 8 pg. Index, 9 1/2" x 6 1/2".
With one prior book on cognitive development, Feldman's literary style seems to lack substance, is wordy, apologetic yet pompous & curiously exposes a surreal gambit. In Preface he bespeaks Gruber of Harvard "had once again recognized a deeper theme in my work ..." And, "prodigies had either been ignored entirely...or interpreted as freaks of nature -- exceptions...described but not explained" & he (author) wants "prodigy phenomenon"...recognized as a lawful example of development rather than...anomaly." He believes there is "a dimension to human evolution that is different from evolution in cats or pansies" & his study may teach us "how we might better choreograph our uniquely human dance." As, perhaps, a humble Literary First, Acknowledgements begin: "Although this book bears the name of a single author..." we find cover & title page imprinted "with Lynn T. Goldsmith." (We are told it is his wife).
The 12 Chaps. divided into 3 Parts cover his search, observations & sagacity on 6 prodigies & their gurus & some analyses of cultural encounters & assimilation issues with cohorts, siblings, parents & mentors. He expounds on the term "co-incidence...the major organizing theme...to capture...many sets of forces in development & expression of human potential" which require guidance. The 6 children in study are all boys, the author apologizing thrice for this happening. How "one is Italian" & "one is distinctly Scottish" is far, far beyond me, as is his expose that "Only one...is Jewish, which surprized me" (he fails to reveal if there should me more or none). The 6 prodigies are: Nils (9- music), Franklin (8-chess), Richy (8-chess), Billy (6-math/gen.), Adam (3 1/2- music/Omni), & Randy (6-writer) he observed on occasions over a 10-year period -- & also gleaned reports from one or both parents, sibs & teachers. He confides: "individual potential for prodigious achievement itself is obviously a critical precondition" for a prodigy -- a Pearl of Wisdom? Apologetically, "my wife, Lynn, wanted to be a ballerina, only to learn that her feet were not designed for standing on pointe" but tenders no personal disqualification as stud material. We do learn ages for prodigy domains is, in music (3-4), chess (5-6), math (10-12) & visual arts c. 15-25 & a neologism for multiple domains as "Omnibus prodigy."
Author notes mentor-masters oft use recapitulationistic teachings & "notion of reincarnation is simply an extreme form...of common practice." He decrees: "The reality of occasional deadly typhoons no doubt contributed to the Oriental notion of karma..." Author proffers: "If little Albert (Einstein) had been a girl, I think we would never have heard of her." (If my daughter Jennifer heard this she'd make him apologize).
Part III, Chap. 9 gets weird: "Nonbiological factors may also contribute to the transgeneration transmission of talent and... help explain... talent... tinged... with the unnatural & mystical ...perhaps astrology holds some lessons... although one must remain skeptical of the explanatory power behind astrological accounts... a delicate interplay of forces..."
He discusses zombies, metaphysical, prebirth memories, strong psychic aura, etc. & concludes: "as scientifically risky as it may be to propose broader forces than those of the Darwinian or neo-Darwinian sort, it seems necessary to do so if prodigy is to be comprehended."
Overall, the book falls short of yielding any new information on lives & times of child prodigies -- but exposes an author's prejudices & insecurities to the rest of the world.
Fascinating!.......2003-06-06
Anyone who has any interest in the phenomenon of child prodigies will find this book a fascinating read. It traces the early development of 6 children who are prodigies (able to work competitively at the adult level) in some field. Of the 6, the fields the children excel in are as follows: 2 are in chess, 1 is a writer, 1 a musician, 1 in mathematics, 1 is extremely gifted overall (one of the highest IQs recorded). The author explains why prodigies are more often found in some fields, such as music or chess, than others (such as writing- the writing prodigy was the only 1 of the 6 children studied who was not working at an adult professional level). The author delves into the "coincidences" of time, place, technology and parenting that allow these prodigies to develop. He draws on other examples of prodigies outside of his own 6 subjects. Among these is a severely handicapped youth who, through the dedication of his adoptive parents, was eventually discovered to have savant ability in music. Some may argue that one or the other child in the study may not be a true prodigy, but they are all interesting children to read about, and the author certainly makes some excellent observations on the development of human potential. I found this book hard to put down.
Interpreting Human Anomalies.......2002-05-01
While "it remains true that the prodigy cries out for explanation," Feldman displays an array of insights which demonstrate that (as he approvingly quotes Richard Feynman): "The thing that doesn't fit is the thing that's the most interesting, the part that doesn't go according to what you expected." By drawing together the interplay, the reciprocal threadings, of physical, psychological, and cultural cultural levels in the development of prodigies, Feldman contends that the "end game" of our evolutionary process is to create conditions which maximally deploy the rich potential expressed in human history. Such an end game thus has survival value to our species by increasing the range of human skills and capacities in meaningfully specific ways. As Feldman states, "Prodigies are masterpieces of timing, individuals who manage to find a fully resonant domain very early in their individual life games." This book sensitively portrays, in a nested cluster of apt metaphors, how such a matching of individual and domain occurs. Any given society provides a fecund bed for very specific types of prodigies to flower. Certain times favor particular forms of talent, yet our prodigies often defy predictability and retain "an element of mystery and uncanniness." And, ironically, for all the efflorescence of talent, the development of a prodigy is intrinsically a fragile event. Feldman's penetrating look at such precocity provides a deeper understanding of its preconditions, structure, and outcomes. And all this is presented in the context of human evolution as psychophysiological-cultural reality. A wonderful, provocative book. Pour a cup of java or tea, and prepare to ponder.
nature's gambit.......2002-03-27
Child prodigy which defined in this book as God giving specific gift to achieve some specific task, is indeed nonexistence. The only thing I see in this book is six highly intelligent kids who had been guided to develope some specific skill such as music or chess by their parents and/or their master teachers. The author is a researcher who starts with a wrong assumption, bend his research mathod whenever he likes and at the end, has no courage to admit that his research is misguided and his research subject does not even exist.
The only thing that any parent of gift children can learn from this book is: let your children be, support them but don't push them. The worst thing any parent can do is to behieve like Adam's mother in this book.

Great Bible History.......2007-10-11
This bible dictionary was very helpful with additional information on the name or subject inquiry. Even giving some scriptures for follow-up. It is a great tool for biblical research.
Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary.......2007-10-05
Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Dictionary: Completely Revised and Updated Edition
I have purchased seven dictionaries, one for myself and the others for gifts for Christmas. I am so impressed with this dictionary because of its "down to earth" layman language. I have a Strong's and Vines but this particular dictionary gives me so much more information for my Bible studies and in depth studies of the Bible. I highly recommend this particular dictionary for all serious students of the Bible.
Horrible and Opinionated.......2007-07-28
I was looking for a "fact based" book. Instead, this dictionary is full of unsupported opinions and ideas that have no biblical or historical basis. Even many of the photographs have nothing to do with the words you look up. Many of the definitions are short and vague. The lengthier ones have very truth behind them; they are just private interpretations. I can't imagine anyone in search of a bible dictionary being benefited by this. If you want to understand the bible better, this book will steer you in the wrong direction and leave you more confused than ever.
Trustworthy & Complete Bible Dictionary.......2007-07-13
When I heard that the Lord's Workers, as well as the friends use this dictionary, I rushed to obtain a copy and am glad I did.
Clear concise definitions .......2007-04-04
I have used an early version of Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Dictionary (1986) and found it extremely valuable/and now the updated version in defining terms that although I had heard them all my life (72 years), I was still not certain of their exact defination and usage. For instance - "God's Kingdom" or "Kingdom of God/Heaven." It is the first petition asked in the "Lord's Prayer" - i.e. "Thy Kingdom come" but how many people actually know what they are asking for? Nelson's Bible Dictionary will tell you and much more! (Evil is conquered - living in a state of joy/peace/happiness) You could spend the whole day just reading in the "R's" such as Redemption/Repentance/Reconciliation/Rightousness, etc. How many people could define those off the top's of their heads? - look them up in the Nelson's Bible Dictionary - and you will be able to, accurately and definatively. I have taught adult Sunday Schools for years, and believe me - I have really relied on my Nelson's to bail me out a lot of times - in answering hard student questions! You will not be disappointed if you buy it - written/compiled by authoritive religious writers who cut across all denominations and the definitions are core info if you want to consider yourself a learned Bible scholar. Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Dictionary: Completely Revised and Updated Edition
Book Description
• How did the Exile change Israel's religious life?
• Why would Lot even think of throwing his daughters to a mob?
• What exactly were the differences between Herodians, Sadducees, Pharisees, and Essenes?
Lots of questions crop up when you read the Bible. For answers, you need insight into the Bible's culture, its people and how they lived.
What people wore, what they ate, what they built, how they exercised justice, how they mourned, how they viewed family and legal customsÂall are "manners and customs" and all vary from period to period throughout Israel's history.
Fortunately, this book is a lot more than just nice picturesÂalthough there are a lot of those, too. Each chapter furnishes an introduction to the political and physical setting of the period in Israel's history and outlines the basic structure of its social world. Then specific scenes drawn from the biblical text are studied in a way that sheds light on the daily life of the people of that time. Drawing from a variety of sources to recreate the society of ancient IsraelÂextrabiblical sources and archaeological data as well as the biblical text itselfÂDr. Matthews helps the reader to see the ancient world of Israel as never before. Once seen in this way, it will never look the same again.
Now in a new, revised edition, Dr. Matthews offers even more helpful insights into the biblical world. Over a hundred Scripture passages have been placed alongside the text to complement the discussion and to keep the relevant biblical passages in view. More than twenty new illustrations and photos help to give an even better "feel" for the world of Abraham, David, Jesus, and Paul.
Customer Reviews:
Great new book!.......2007-08-13
I have read several of Matthews' books, including The Old Testament Parallels, The IVP Bible Background Commentary, and his volume of the New Cambridge Bible Commentary series, Judges & Ruth. This latest book is just as well written and accessible. Matthews attempts to find realistic dates for Biblical stories, not always assuming them to be historical, and explains the cultural nuances of particular verses in light of his sociocultural knowledge of various time periods and regions. This book is suitable for all interested laymen, seminary students, and pastors.
A Help In Understanding Daily Life in Biblical Times.......2003-11-29
While the Bible is a fascinating book to read and study, it is easy to forget that the Bible was written over a long period of time. Though historians differ about exact dates, Abraham probably lived anywhere between 1,250 and 1,500 years prior to the birth of Christ, David probably lived about 750 to 1,000 years before Christ's birth, and between 587 B.C. and the writing of the New Testament, life changed almost daily. This is why understanding the daily life of different periods in Biblical history, and knowing that there were often vast differences in customs and practices in the differing periods, is so essential to understanding scripture. Life in Biblical times changed quickly just as much as life in our own day changes rapidly.
Biblical scholar Victor Matthews attempts to explain the life and customs in different Biblical periods in his book MANNERS AND CUSTOMS IN THE BIBLE. The book is divided into five major sections: The Patriarchal Period (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and his sons), The Exile and Settlement (Moses, Joshua, and the Judges), The Monarchy, Exile and Return, and the Intertestamental and New Testament Era (The Persians, Greeks, and Romans). Nearly two thirds of the book covers the period prior to the writing of the New Testament, but this is actually a plus since there are many other resources that cover the New Testament. Readers get bits of information about warfare, government policies, family life, gender roles, marriage customs, business and trade, and a host of other small subjects that make the book interesting to browse through and a must have for scripture study.
Though the book is set up in chronological order, it is not really a comprehensive history of the Bible, but a supplement that enriches a historical text. It has a scriptural index which will help people involved in preaching and in research.
Certainly this book will be helpful for people who preach and conduct Bible studies, but it will also be of interest to anyone who wants to see how our day and age is both similar to, and differs from people of Biblical times.
Disappointed.......2003-01-10
I thought that this would be about daily living but it is mostly about the politics through the different eras.
Wonderfully informative though emphasis on Higher Criticism........2000-12-22
Mr. Matthews offers a good overview of the period between the beginning and finishing of the Scriptures, uncluding the Maccabean period. It is amazing how much better one can understand the Scriptures when you have read this book. The social customs and manners of burial, marriage, food preparation, farming, traveling, city-builing, etc. are all covered in this volume. It is very good for those just beginning to study the Scripture, or those that have studied for some time without a clear understanding of the customs of the peoples written about. Despite all this praiseworthy detail, however, Mr. Matthews shows his true colors as a Higher Critic of the Scriptures. This means he denies the infallibility, inspiration, and preservance of the Scriptures. New and old Christians be ware of this, for once these doctrines are denied you may as well throw the book of God's Word away (if that may be said reverently). With this warning in mind, I would highly recommend the purchase of this book for any Christian or otherwise.
