Book Description

A military story...and a love story, too! "Battle of the Wac" is a true story about one of the more than 400,000 young American women who served their country during World War II. The story deals with the frustrations, the decisions, the work, the embarrassments, and the struggle to be accepted by the male soldiers, even in a veteran's hospital 40 years later. Also included is a tender love story covering those bittersweet years when planning for the future seemed nearly impossible, and a soldier's life during the battle of the bulge where he was wounded during a terrifying night while serving as the leader of a reconnaissance troop. The dates are historically correct; the events actually took place, although names of some of the participants have been changed, as indicated.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent war/love story.......2002-08-08

As the daughter of a WAC officer, I was deeply moved by Bessey's book. She is a credit to all WACs--a true lady in uniform. Not only does she reveal a gifted writing style, but she treats her subject with depth and beauty. Anyone who loves WWII history, women's history, or just great love stories, should buy this book. I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Great Story of Women in the Army in WWII and a Love Story.......2001-12-27

This is an excellent book about another little-known aspect of World War II and the 'Greatest Generation'. Carol Hossner Bessey was a small-town girl from rural Idaho who enlisted in the WAAC, which later became the WAC, to serve her country in World War II. This is her story- a story of the patriotism of a young woman who strived to do her part in a big war despite the occasional lack of respect from her male peers in the military. It is a story of friendships, of the many different women Carol meets during the war years. It is also a love story, telling the tale of the meeting and whirlwind romance of two young people in time of war who meet and fall in love despite the fact that the future is uncertain. The book follows Carol through her wartime experiences Stateside, mostly in Kansas, and also follows her future husband Grant's experiences Stateside and later as a scout in the Battle of the Bulge, where he is injured, and in the Army of Occupation.
Bessey writes in the spare prose of the newspaperwomen she has been for decades. She captures the feelings of young women off serving their country very well. As a male reader, I found it particularly interesting to read of the war from a female perspective. The book would appeal to anyone interested in women's roles in fighting World War II and also to anyone interested in women dealing with adversity. Bessey's experiences were not unique, nor were they action-packed. They are told engagingly and honestly, with no attempt to build them up, and what results is a satisfying, edifying read that gives the reader a new appreciation for the sacrifices of the thousands of women of 'The Greatest Generation' who served our nation in time of need.
The book is illustrated with photos that augment and heighten interest in the text.
I recommend 'Battle of the Wac'. It is not an action and adventure military history. It is a perceptive and sensitive account of women at war, one woman in particular, and a valuable addition to existing military literature.

    Book Description

The first book to clearly explain this new disorder and offer treatment options

Afflicting an estimated 3 million women in the United States, PMDD is an extreme form of PMS in which the physical and psychological symptoms are often so severe that they strain social, familial, and work relationships to the breaking point. Despite the rapidly growing body of scientific research into its causes and cures, PMDD continues to be a bone of contention among medical professionals, and many women who suffer from it are still told that it's all in their heads. The first consumer book written on this condition and authored by a nationally respected expert on the treatment of this condition, The PMDD Phenomenon:

5 out of 5 stars What a relief to know that I'm not crazy.......2007-08-13

I started this book yesterday evening and couldn't put it down. I have been suffering from PMDD since adolescence, although I didn't know it. I really appreciated the sections in the book that said that PMDD is a real, measurable condition - not a moral failing, or a lack of mental or physical fortitude. It is so nice to have a source of thorough information PLUS encouragement and understanding. It is helping my husband and I understand what I go through every month and why. This information is going to change my life, I can already tell.

4 out of 5 stars New angles on women's health.......2006-03-03

It is refreshing to read a bood that actually tackles women's health problems which really are not taken seriously. Too many women suffer and at this time the medical establishment should take a more serious and alternate view on how to research and help women suffering with PMDD. This book has been an immense help and many kudos to Ms. Dell for tackling this subject.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book!.......2006-02-27

I have been counseling women and their spouses/partners for over 5 years about all aspects of PMS and PMDD, more especially how to effectively treat PMS and PMDD using specific nutrition and other life-style changes. I have been symptom free of my own severe PMDD for over 4 years now following these methods. I found this book to be an honest, well researched and insightful tool in helping women (and their spouses/partners) to understand this disorder from the inside out. I highly recommend it!

    5 out of 5 stars Thank you!.......2003-09-01

Finally someone who understands! Having being diagnosed as suffering PMDD only recently this book was an absolute God send. Now I finally understand what it is that's gripping me each month and I am not - as I feared losing my mind. For any woman who suffers PMS or worse please do yourself a favour and get this book, make your family read it, your friends, your boss... it's great to know we are not alone!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best!!!.......2002-10-25

This book is wonderful! It is easy to read, easy to understand, and for once I feel like I really understand what works, what doesn't work, and why. I highly recommend this book for every woman who has PMS, PMDD, or is even just a little cranky once a month. This puts it all into perspective, and offers all kinds of solutions. Top-notch! Plus, I trust the information because it comes from a woman doctor who is both a psychiatrist AND an OB/GYN.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Value and Great Recipes.......2002-11-09

I bought this book so I could cook the same foods my Irish-born husband grew up with. It has come through time and again. He swears the Brown Bread I make is exactly like his Mum's but I got it straight out of this book! There's a little bit of everything; from simple sauces to soups, vegetables, main dishes, breads and desserts and more complex recipes (like traditional Christmas cake that takes a couple of days to make!).

My one "complaint" would be that this smallish book likes to close by itself especially when I've got my hands in the flour so remember to weight it open beforehand.

However, I give 5 stars because you get a bunch of really great recipes for a reasonable price. So worth it!

4 out of 5 stars Great Value, Nice Illustrations.......2001-03-09

I love this book! The price is right and the recipes are delicious. Marlene Ekman has illustrated a number of books for Sterling, and her illustrations are always charming. If you are looking for a special St. Pat's recipe, you'll find it here! Easy-to-follow directions for even the most inexperienced cook. There's something for everyone! I highly recommend it! For those with a little more money to spend, try Celtic Folklore Cooking (great folklore/history background); Irish Heritage Cookbook; and Irish Traditional Cooking.

If you want to learn more about your family, now's the time to start. With the advent of the Internet, there's more information available than ever before, and it's easier to access now than in the good old days of musty libraries and records halls. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Online Genealogy by Rhonda McClure will have you wired and digging up dirt (or gold) in just an hour or two. Even the most ardent computer-hater will have to admit that the search is simpler, and McClure makes the case clearly. Her charming prose is well complemented by online images and hint boxes scattered liberally on each page. Specific sites are mentioned as well as general means of searching for family data, so even if one site disappears you can still get what you need. The book covers the basics of both gathering family data and online searches, so if you're not quite up to speed on one or the other, you can quickly figure it out. After you've browsed a bit and started collecting information, the later chapters help you to communicate with other researchers, mining government records, and even publishing your own results online. It's not hard to learn plenty about your family's history; whether you want to get in touch with your roots, glean medical information to improve your own health, or give your kids something to think about, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Online Genealogy is for you. --Rob Lightner

Online Genealogy is a fun hobby that is increasing in popularity. It use to be a hassle trying to contact libraries and record halls by mail or telephone.

The "Idiot's Guide..." will show you everything you need to know to get started setting up your family tree. Make sure you have as much detail, about your history, available when you begin your search, to make things easier.

If you already belong to a genealogy club, this book might seem redundant. But it is a nice reference to have when you don't feel like searching your bookmarks for a specific page.

I bought this for my mother, and she found it very useful. Of course she still writes half of her bookmarks down on paper.

I was very dissapointed in this book. It's not up to date and and seems more focused on bag growing than anything else. It would help if the author would add some illustration to this book. If you want a good book to read on hydroponics you'd better look elsewhere.

After seeing a friend's copy of Saffell's book all I can say is "thank heaven I didn't buy this!" Hilmur possibly is a great hydroponicist and insightful marketer of plant materials; but after submitting to his stumbling, barely-linear ramblings and tangential explainations if felt like a murder suspect zeroed in the sights of Lt. Cloumbo. "Oh yea, just one more thing..sorry I didn't mention it before..just a loose end to tie up..."

For the beginning hydroponics practitioner who might find Howard Rush's HYDROPONIC FOOD PRODUCTION: A Definitive Guidebook of Soilless Food-Growing Methods a little too much in detail and information, I recommend his simpler and more hobby/home gardener oriented HYDROPONICS: Questions And Answers for Successful Growing. Don't waste your time or money on Saffell's Shoe Strings!

While the book isn't completely worthless, it is very poorly written - it needs a good editor. The author states at the beginning that the reader should read completely through before acting on anything and that's good advice, because the book is full of "oh, by the way, you need to do (this) first" sections. The author's description of hydroponic methods is very vague and unclear, and includes very, very few illustrations to clarify matters.

I found the book difficult to read due to the presentation, and there was far too much time spent on the history of the people and how the parents died. I don't see how that can help someone with their grief, and quite honestly wasn't interested in how their people died, I was looking for help for myself. But even the format of the pages just looked confusing. I would highly recommend Harold Ivan Smith's "Grieving The Loss of A Mother", it is helping me to survive.

5 out of 5 stars Grief for a child IS unbearable -- but we bear it.......2002-06-30

RECOVERING FROM THE LOSS OF A CHILD contains a list of do's and don'ts for helping bereaved parents. Donnelly says to let your caring and concern show, be available, say you're sorry about what happened, allow them to express their grief, encourage them to be patient with themselves, allow them to talk about the child, give special attention to bewildered siblings, reassure them that they did all they could, and talk about the endearing qualities of the child.

Don't point out that the parents have other children (no child can take the place of another). Don't say they should be grateful. Don't avoid mentioning the child's name. Don't avoid them because you're uncomfortable or feel helpless.

If you're wondering what to do -- this book will spell it out for you. It's another truly useful book for people who want to help someone they care about through the pain of grief.

4 out of 5 stars What "A reader from Cambridge" did not understnad.......2003-04-25

Further up "A reader from Cambridge" proved that he did not understand nothing at all. It's just for this guy that I do have to explain, that this book has nothing got to do with scholarships or so. It's hard to belive that he did not find out while reading the book to its end. He or she however seemed to have noticed in the end that he or she might blame himself or herself and therefore missed to leave the full name.

For the rest of the world I would like to say that this is not big literature, but an important book. Once individuals stop to be interested to investigate in their history and to try to understand what was happening when and why, we will loose a chance to prevent dark parts of human history from coming back. This is why this book has a right to exist and this is what we can learn from it. It gives us an example for ourselves. And Suleiman does not celebrate herself, as her critic says, but gives us an unproctected view into her feelings. This makes her vulnerable and the "reader from Cambridge" takes his freedom to eagerly touch her wounds.

I say it very clearly: Books like Suleiman's help to make sure that "readers from Cambridge MA" buy a book about the Iraque war the other day and complain that it is not really on the oil business.

1 out of 5 stars Just when you think French Teachers can't get more conceited.......2001-02-04

It's in no way clear what any of this has to do with scholarship, either on the level of literature, history, or autobiography. Suleiman is clearly her own biggest fan, and the book does nothing but detail her personal celebration of herself. It is, for example, in no way clear what her name-dropping accounts of dinner parties and non-attended talks is supposed to signify within the context of serious, reflective scholarship. If you're sitting a qualfiying exam anytime soon for a degree in Susan Suleimanism, by all means read this book, but it is a waste of time for anyone else. Let's hope this volume sounds a death knell for academic self-aggrandizement: come back to earth Ms. Suleiman.

5 out of 5 stars My thoughts on "Budapest Diary".......1999-12-15

This is a book exploring the author's search for a childhood identity forged in Hungary in the shadow of the Holocaust and her family's subsequent emigration to the USA. For many complex reasons, childhood issues had not been addressed for much of the author's adult life. The book is a wonderfully evocative memoir of childhood, a search for a national identity and an accurate and sensitive portrayal of the sense of alienation felt by those with the immigrant experience. It is set in the background of the diary written by the author while she lived and worked in Budapest in an academic capacity. As she explores the issues around Hungary's newly found freedoms in the 1990s, she examines them in the context of the uglier aspects of Hungarian and European nationalism which had decimated Hungarian Jewry. Although told from the Jewish viewpoint, it has broad appeal and addresses many important aspects of the human condition.

The author's considerable literary ability (she is professor of Romance Languages at Harvard) is evident in the exquisitely sensitive descriptions of events and emotions from both a child's and adult's viewpoint. She seems to have learnt well from the authors on whom she has based her distinguished career. Emotions leap at the reader from every page, often rapidly traversing the spectrum of joy, sadness, longing, confusion and humor. At all times there is a strong prevailing sense of the author's awareness of how her uniquely Hungarian Jewish background profoundly influenced every important outcome of her life and her world outlook.

The dilemma of being an outsider, yet identifying culturally and nationally with a sovereign state is well known to many Jews and constitutes the fundamental European Jewish experience. Many of those (myself included) who underwent this in repressive political systems fled to the western world and became very successful and yet experienced a sense of national and cultural alienation in their adopted societies.

Despite addressing emotionally charged, controversial and sometimes uncomfortable subjects, there is always a sense of lightness and what is almost playfulness. Not all issues are serious and there is one hilarious description of Hungarian toilets, which every Westerner must have felt (if not voiced) upon their initial experience with these dreadfully designed pieces of porcelainware.

Although an emotionally charged book, it never descends into unrealistic sentimentalism - the message seems to be that no matter what we do with our lives, where we come from has a profound effect on who we are and how we see the events around us. Acknowledging this can be liberating.
