      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars OK book but seen better.......2007-09-02

It has good ideas and variety. I found it to be to wordy before and mixed in with the how to parts. Also, some ideas referred to a previous one, which was good, but would have been better if added as a continuation or a variant instead of several pages apart. I will probably redo the ideas for my own personal use and easier reference. This book has stimulated memories and ideas. It is worth having. Those wordy fillers are useful too.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent ideas.......2007-02-23

The introduction in this book is a beautiful tribute to her grandmother. All grandparents would gain much by many of the ideas in the book.

5 out of 5 stars This is awesome!!!.......2003-08-15

This book is full of creative, imaginative ideas! For anyone who wants their grandkids to do more than just watch tv and play video games, you must get this book!

      5 out of 5 stars great ideas.......2003-05-12

I have been a preschool teacher for thirteen years and have two children of my own. This book by Peggy Epstein has great ideas. This book has exactly what today's children are craving. They don't need the latest toy or video out on the market. what children need is time with the people that they love. This book has lots of ideas that don't cost any money and has little preparation time. Give this book to anyone that wants to connect with a child. Open any page and you will find ways to interact with your child, grandchild, neighbor or friend who needs five minutes of uninterupted time with you. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful book ~ wonderful ideas for fun activitities!.......2003-05-12

I LOVE this delightful little book! But don't let the title mislead you, "Great Ideas for Grandkids! 150 Ways to Entertain, Educate, and Enjoy" is for ANYONE who likes to have fun with children (i.e., educators, new parents, aunts and uncles, care givers, home school, etc.). This book is full of GREAT fun and easy-to-do activities to amuse both young and old. It has lots of wonderful ideas of things to do, and most use simple props easily found at home or school. Additionally, it would make a great inexpensive gift for school teachers, especially elementary school ~ and the timing is PERFECT, the school semester is almost over. This book really does inspire readers to have fun!

        5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous series.......2003-11-24

I own this and all the Country Garden series of cookbooks. They are all visually gorgeous, and all written by professional chefs. Each book surrounds a featured ingredient which is seasonal. I must admit that many of the recipes could be considered "chi-chi," but for cookbook collectors, this series is really wonderful. I'm sorry they stopped adding to these books, and very sorry that they are going out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly beautiful photographs and luscious recipes!.......2003-02-15

When I first unwrapped this book, my mouth dropped open in amazement! The first thing that strikes you about it is how gorgeous the photographs are....but as you read the recipes, you realize that there is no let-down here. They sound just as delectable as the photos are beautiful.
A delight for those who love to cook, an inspiration for those who want to cook, and even if you don't cook at all, this is a beautiful book to have!!

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice book with basic info and beautiful ideas.......2005-03-20

I just recently fell in love with succulent plants, so my husband bought me this book (and a few others) for Christmas. I enjoy leafing through it for ideas. It has lots of beautiful photos with ideas for growing succulents and cactus. The book is about 100 pages and when you open it up, most pages have a full-page photo on one side and text on the other. The text discusses some background info on the plants pictured and a "How to do it" section that describes the plants needs. One thing I really like about this book is that as you page through the book, the pages that cover specific plants have a summary of info of that plant in the margin. This always includes the basic info you need - light, watering, fertilizing, etc.

This book isn't as in-depth as some, but it's more of an idea book. It has photos of plants both indoors and out. It's a great basic info & idea book for the beginner.

3 out of 5 stars It was okay..........2002-10-06

Luckily I found this book on sale because I probably would have been a lot more disappointed if I had paid more than [price]for it. The beginning section I found to be rather interesting, it's more of a general care section. The rest of the book however are tips for more specific species. If you have one of these species of cacti or succulents, it is a bit informative. If you're looking for a very general book, with some general tips, it's an okay book. If you're looking for something in depth, don't get this book because you'll be highly disappointed.

                    2 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing.......1998-01-14

I originally looked at this book because it had information on something that I was interested in -- propagation. However, I am now a little bit wiser.

The reason this book is disappointing to me is only 1/3 is related to general care of cacti. The other 2/3's of the book focuses on common species of cacti and how to take care of that particular species. I also find this to be inaccurate, because care of species also depends a lot on what type of environment you put them in. My recommendation is if you are looking for a book on how to care for cacti, look a little bit longer.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!.......2002-07-01

This book hit it on the nail in so many ways. My partner and I have a 26year age gap and have question so much in the last 4years. This book helped us find so many answers to our questions concerning having children together and about our relationship. Since this topic isn't a subject that is easily conformed at the dinner table, I feel like I am normal in how I feel as does my partner. We don't feel like we are the only ones feeling the way we do now!

Some of the basic questions that it helped us through was how the child might feel having an older parent? How society might treat us? Death and divorce...all major topics in a relationship that are hard to talk about to anyone.

A lot of the book concentrated on second time children...having older children(in their twenties) and having young children(children under 10)at the same time. This doesn't really apply to us, but it was interesting reading. It even included a section on adapotion which was very interesting as well.

I hope this book can help other people as much as it has helped my partner and I.

3 out of 5 stars Could be very helpful for some; it just wasn't for me.......2000-09-04

This book is well written, although perhaps too academic in nature for my tastes. But I thought it would be more helpful to me for my situation than it was. I am 40 and expecting my first child early next year. I'm seeking information that will help me be appropriately supportive of my wife and a better father for my child. If I had known the book spent so much time comparing how fathers raised their second families with how they raised their older children I would not have bothered.

Perhaps I'm just not in the target demographic for this book, and perhaps I will re-read it in a few years and get some insights that escaped me this time around. But I just didn't find it very helpful.

I would recommend that men who are starting second families read this book, but those who have never been through a wife's pregnancy should look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars The only, best guide for men over 40 thinking about babies.......1998-08-27

This is the only book of its kind. Millions of men become fathers at 40, 50 or more, which is something that nature has designed us to do. But there is very little information on what the issues are or how best to cope.

The book has some statistics but mostly anecdotes of specific families with either delayed or remarried fatherhood. It gives some glimpses of societal changes as we all live longer and healthier and so may have children later.

It has excellent breadth, taking in subjects of stepkids, may-december marriage, adoption, fathers-at-home, etc.

The writing is clear and it's an easy read.

He was known first as a Warsaw ghetto smuggler, then as Comandante Enrico. He traveled under false identity papers and worked at a German border patrol station. Throughout the years of the Holocaust, Hermann Wygoda lived a life of narrow escapes, daring masquerades, and battles that almost defy reason.

Unique among Holocaust memoirs, In the Shadow of the Swastika, now in paperback, celebrates the memory of a man who received decorations from three Western powers and who, years later, was honored posthumously by the Italian city he helped to liberate.

"One of the best stories I have ever read." This is an eye witness account of an able bodied Jewish man who decided not to give up without a fight. Despite terrible personal loss he fought back, and helped many people along the way. It is extremely hard to write a review of such an unbelievable story. There don't seem to be any words to do it justice. The story tells a side of the war many people never hear about. It explains through Wygoda's experiences what the war was like for Jews from the very beginning. Why so many Jews didn't fight back, and how the Nazi's got them into those horrible death camps. I have personally thanked Hermann Wygoda's family for letting the world know him, and his unbelieveable story.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who does not believe that one man can make a difference in the world.

5 out of 5 stars A Man of Indomitable Will.......1999-03-19

I would like to share what my father, Harry L. Meyer, a B-17 radio operator during WW II, recently wrote me about this book (with his permission): " In the Shadow of the Swastika" is fascinating reading about the exploits of a remarkable individual. Hermann Wygoda was a man of indomitable will who was blessed with courage, ingenuity, resilience and, by his own admission, occasional good fortune which allowed him to escape some desparate circumstances. The horrendous conditions wrought by the ruthless Nazi regime in Poland and wherever it came into power is the stuff of an appalling nightmare. For a man of his ethnic persuasion to escape the suffocating death trap the Nazis created borders on the miraculous. To do so and ultimately become a respected leader of a heroic partisan resistance movement is the material of legends. His normal disposition was not to be a warrior, for I believe by nature and cultural influence he was philosophic, altruistic and tolerant. This is manifested in his just dealings with others even in the trying and dehumanizing conditions of war. I respect him for not passively submitting to his tormentors, but opposing them with determination and fortitude, thereby helping in no small way to defeat them. When the fabric of a decent society is threatened by the forces of an unconscionable tyrrany, it is to be hoped that individuals like Hermann Wygoda will always be there to oppose them. I have always been proud of my combat service in WW II, but by reading works such as this which so graphically portray the consummate evil of a regime that operated outside the scope of human decency, I am more proud than ever to have contributed in some measure to destroy it.

                      5 out of 5 stars Amazing true-life adventure........1998-10-26

If Wygoda's story wasn't documented, you wouldn't believe it.
"Audacity", he said, "is a prerequisite for survival", and Wygoda had plenty. Escaping occupied Poland, actually travelling into Germany to work under the noses of the Nazis (even those who could "smell a Jew"), and eventually commanding a division of Italian partisans, the author exhibited a rare courage and determination that earned awards from three Allied nations.
His story, written in later life for his children, is recommended for WWII readers, Holocaust students, and anyone else who enjoys true-life action adventures.(The "score" rating is an unfortunately ineradicable feature of the page. This reviewer does not "score" books.)

This powerful true story of Frieda E. Roos-van Hessen, a Jewish concert and opera singer, who along with her friend, survived one close call after another during the Nazi occupation of Holland as friends and family were lost to Nazi annihilation. In an era in which Nazism is operating once again among disillusioned young people, and in which revisionists are trying to deny the great horror of the Holocaust, it is appropriate for testimonies such as this one, to come forth to affirm the truth of that dark period in current history and to uplift the hope for a brighter future for generations to come.

"Life in the Shadow of the Swastika" begins with a letter written in 1949 to Felicia, Frieda E. Roos-van Hessen. Frieda shares with her daughter what life was like during the Holocaust.

"Before the war, the atmosphere in our home was that of music, and art and family." Frieda refers to herself as "daddy's little girl." Her father was "a businessman and captain of the corps of Engineers with the Dutch Army Reserve." Her life was pleasant with visits to the zoo and "presents from Sinterklass." Frieda went to school, learned to knit, crochet and embroider. Childhood was a time of laughter and joy. That ended when the nightmare began.

It was on a field trip to the mountains of Germany anti-Semitism first touched her life. The experience left her and her friends dumbfounded. That was only the beginning. Frieda's life took a drastic turn. Her family was in danger. A law was passed not allowing Gentiles to serve Jews.

"Life in the Shadow of the Swastika" by Frieda E. Roos-van Hessen is a tribute to the brave people that risked their lives to help the Jewish people in Holland. The story of the Holocaust should never be forgotten. Ms. Hessen is a courageous woman and an excellent writer. Her life is one to be celebrated. She is a beautiful woman physically as attested to by the photo on the back cover. She is a beautiful person inside as demonstrated to by the story she tells. The cover of this book speaks a thousand words, with a picture of the author at as a teen and the Star of David imposed on the shadow of a swastika. The story flows smoothly and is easy to focus on. The trying times come to life on the pages. I highly recommend this book to everyone, for this is a story that all generation must hear.

                                5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2006-07-03

An incredible debut novel. It is very well written and fast paced. The author manages to weave together multiple interrelated stories that build toward a fantastic crescendo. The beginning of the novel delves into war torn Germany at the end of WWII, as the Nazi's scramble to salvage and secure their secrets. The novel then changes gears to modern day society.
At large are secret societies, a serial killer, and an unlikely anti-hero. The best part is that this appears to be just the first novel of a seven part series. The author actually inserts a teaser at the end of this novel - he gives you the first chapter of his sequel. Overall, this is a great book and a great new author. I can't wait to read the next novel.
