Fred Burnham wrote "Taking Chances" and "Scouting on Two Continents" - biographies written from his point of view.
This book/novel fills in some of the holes in the facts of what the modest Fred Burnham didn't include.
The author draws upon information not available until 2000 - a collection of private letters between Burnham and Baden-Powell stored under seal in the Yale Library.
I have read many books about Fred Burnham and that mention Fred Burnham.
(Biographies of Winston Churchill mention Fred Burnham cause Burnham saved Churchill's life during the Boer War in South Africa.)
This book one is a welcome addition to my collection of African Tales.
Burnham's exploits never fail to amaze me.
His attention to detail is complete.
His ability to see detail, while prevailing in the most trying of conditions, are so advanced that mere mortals can only dream of having that level of perception of their environment.
He doesn't seem to have realized the extent of his mental and physical gifts.
Its seems like the complicated information that Burnham collected,processed,interpreted and communicated while scouting came to him as easily as if normal people were checking to see if it was raining.
But it wasn't that simple - he dedicated himself to the study of the details that would keep him alive in lands filled with tribal strife - the American West and South Africa.
In this modern world of instant gratification its hard for today's men & women, outside the elite military units like SEALS, SAS, Delta Force, to understand the importance of the art & craft of true scouting behind enemy lines.
I truly believe that Homer would have included Fred Burnham in the Iliad as a major figure if Burnham had lived in that time... That's how singular and brilliant he was.
Deperately needs an editor.......2007-05-06
It's good, but it was published on-demand by the author and could have used a professional editor to clean it up a bit.
Also, although it's a novel it would have been nice to have an introduction, bibliography, and notes, and generally some more explanation.

This was the first weight/diet related book I ever read and it had quite an impact on me. This book offers useful information about how to eat and usefull tips on how to control impulses to overeat. I'm not saying that this book is the end-all to diet books but it has many helpfull tips and tidbits that can help anyone learn to eat a little healthier.

This is a wonderful book. It contains the most current research in the field of weight management in a format lay people can easily understand. Cathy, very courageously, does not offer a quick fix. A great first quilting book.......2005-07-30
As a beginning quilter, I've been more inspired by the colors and quilt blocks in this book than in any other. The step-by-step "recipes" are a lifesaver for someone who's not sure where to start and make even the more challenging patterns seem accessible. The section on quilting techniques is not as in-depth as in some other books, but this book would be a more-than-adequate accompaniment to a basic quilting class or a beautiful supplement to a more comprehensive quilitng guide.

The Wondrous Landscapes of DIeter Kienast.......2001-11-02
This book reveals an extraordinary body of landscape architectural work that is at least notably accomplished and, at its best, reflects a comprehensive expression and thorough understanding of the forces and elements that celebrate the confluence of nature and man. It is what Konrad Osterwalder -who selected Kienast as the "founder figure" of the landscape architecture program at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology- acknowledges as the act of entering into nature while retaining an awareness of cultural perceptions.
Kienast's work is reflective of a marvelous simplicity of which Mies would be proud, and his use of materials -especially plants- manifests a managed and thoughtful approach, almost tender and certainly romantic. Grounded in horticulture and plants like so many European landscape architects, it is through Kienast's measured use of a broader palette of materials common to the landscape that his remarkable talent is most celebrated. Especially revealing are the observations of his peers, presented in short essays, that honor both the technical and aesthetic achievements manifest in Kienast's work. Captured in a variety of images, the seasonal impacts that interplay with Kienast's landscapes are an essential representation that pays just homage to the reflective brilliance of his expressive interpretations.
The text shares Kienast's view that it is only through variety that a place can acquire an identity. The spirit of such places can emerge and be recognized only through emancipation of a satisfactory (landscape) design, relevant utilization, appropriate care, and healthy ecology: these criteria surelywere essential to the works of many great American landscape architects including Olmsted, Eliot, Farrand, Church, and others. The underpinnings of the bridge between contemporary European and American landscape architecture continue to be sustained through this text.
This text places landscape architecture on a European meridian of great import to the larger discipline that carries its message well beyond European boundaries. It is an important work on a landscape architect who died too young (age 53, in 1998), with much work still to be accomplished. Perhaps others will follow a path parallel to Dieter Kienast: the landscape would surely be better for it!

I read this book that was loaned out to me by my son's daycare provider. (She also gave input on the proof-reading, she is a friend of Joni's....I think that's what she said and I did see her name in the book!)
I thought this book was a great book for any parent or person that will ever be caring for a toddler/child. My son is 22 months old and a lot of the things I read about in this book, he's been doing right at the age Joni writes about. I hope that I will be able to use some of what she says to help with any tantrums that my husband & I might have to deal with now that we have our 22 month old son and 3 week old twins!
