Product Description
When Captain Gronow published his reminiscences in 1862 he claimed that it had been his lot 'to have lived through the greater part of one of the most eventful centuries of England's history'. As an observer of life, of the foibles and oddities of Regency England and France under Louis XVIII, Louis Philippe and Napoleon III, he is unsurpassed. His descriptions of the war in Spain, of the battle of Waterloo, the Paris riots of 1848, and the Coup d'Etat of 1851 are brilliant first-hand accounts of great historical importance. Contrasting these are vignettes of gentlemen's clubs, gambling dens, theatre life, Eton College, the Houses of Parliament, and the cafes of Paris. Gronow's friends and acquaintances were legion -- from literary life come portraits of Byron and Shelley, from the demi monde Harriette Wilson and Sally Brooke, from politics the eccentric Mr Blackburn and Lord Melbourne, from Paris characters as diverse as Alexander Dumas and Madame de Stael. Gronow published four volumes of memoirs in the 1860s and from these Christopher Hibbert has sifted the wittiest, most illuminating observations to produce this fully annotated and brilliant kaleidoscopic picture of Regency and Victorian good living.

Gossipy and fun - and yet............2000-12-07
This is a very difficult book to review as I liked it a lot, but I still have a number of reservations about it - mostly about its editing.
But first, let me tell you about Captain Gronow - he was one of life's observers, and might have slipped through history with only the vaguest of mentions in a few diaries had he not needed to resort to his pen in the 1860's in order to support himself. He wrote four books which were stacked to the gunnels with anecodotes, slanderous stories and all sorts of gossipy snippets. These were snapped up by his Victorian audience who were keen to read about the sinful vagaries of that Bygone era of the Regency.
Christopher Hibbert has done a pretty good job in collecting together some of the better stories and putting them into this one volume. He has also created some sense to the mass of stories by organising them into chapters. These chapters include subject headings like "The Prince Regent, His Family and Friends" and "Rakes, Dandies and Men about Town". So it makes it an easy volume to browse for those of you reading this for fun.
There are a few things with this book that I do find difficult. The first is that Hibbert never questions the veracity of what Gronow says. There are several apocryphal stories in here which Gronow tells (the one of Brummell's aunt being milkmaid is one which springs instantly to mind) - which I feel, as the editor, Hibbert should have at least footnoted. Gronow was writing up to 50 years after events, he certainly could not have recalled all the detail and I think that makes it vitally important that the editor checks the facts. Indeed, it is probable that Gronow lifted this story straight out of the pages of Brummell's first biographer - Captain Jesse - anyway.
Secondly - Hibbert should have checked the dates. Gronow mixes up the dates of the battles of Nive and Nivelle. An easy thing to check, and it is not like Hibbert doesn't know his Peninsular War detail.
Thirdly - while most of Hibbert's footnoted descriptions of Regency People are very good and succinct - he does make at least one mistake mixing up Frances, Lady Jersey with her daughter in law, Sarah, Lady Jersey.
I certainly do feel that of all the edited volumes of Gronow's books to come out so far, Hibbert's is definitely the best. And unless you have a plethora of Regency Books yourself and understand the times well it wouldn't be nearly as much reading Gronow without a good editor to explain some of the events and people Gronow is gossiping about.
However I feel that Gronow could be edited better still. One day perhaps......

Book Description
Wade Hampton Frost was the first professor of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University, in the first department of epidemiology in the United States. He began his remarkable career with the US Public Health Service, where his greatest contributions included the recognition that mild and asymptomatic childhood polio produced lifelong immunity, and the development of methods for tracking influenza epidemics. From 1919, as a professor at the School of Hygiene and Public Health at John Hopkins, he trained many future leaders of American public health programs. He also made substantial contributions to epidemiologic methodology, including developing the concept of an index case during investigations of tuberculosis in Tennessee, the use of life-table methods for estimating secondary attack rates, the use of age cohorts for longitudinal studies, and-in collaboration with Lowell Reed-the first mathematical expression of the epidemic curve. Drawing on personal papers, recorded interviews, and archival material, Thomas M. Daniel recounts the story of Frost's life and work, and elucidates his seminal contributions to epidemiology and public health. George Comstock, Emeritus Centennial Alumni Professor of Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins has provided an introduction. Thomas M. Daniel is Professor Emeritus of Medicine and International Health and Emeritus Director of the Center for International Health at Case Western Reserve University.

Book Description
When you're raised by a grandmother whose life ambition is to see that all of her family and friends are fed palate-pleasing traditional dishes, the apple strudel doesn't fall far from the tree. Whenever people came to visit Marla Brooks's grandmother, the first question was always "What can I get you to eat?" soon followed by "Here, have a little bit more." Over time, Ms. Brooks has come to follow in her grandmother's footsteps, and always has something tasty to offer guests.
In this time of healthy cooking and healthy eating, crowd-pleasing and satisfying, full-flavor meals are often left behind. This cookbook contains no calorie counts, carbohydrate statistics, or other nutritional guidelines. You don't have to be a Jewish grandmother to cook like one, nor to eat like one. But it's often said that in a Jewish grandmother's way of thinking, love and food are synonymous. If that's the case, this is a book full of love.
Wholly dedicated to good old-fashioned taste, these family recipes--many from the author's grandparents' delicatessen--include everything from knishes to blintzes, with some borscht and kugel thrown in. There are also recipes from celebrities such as Richard Simmons and Dr. Ruth Westheimer, and crowd-pleasers like brisket, matzo ball soup, chicken wings, and much more. Whether you are a novice cook or an experienced gourmand, these recipes are easy to prepare and sure to please.
Customer Reviews:
My sister the yiddish author!!!!.......2006-03-14
The author of this excellent Jewish cookbook is my sister and I'm very proud to say this. The cookbook and the pictures including the stories behind it are a tribute to my family. Although the average reader has no real idea on how the Slobod family survived through their turmoil etc. this cookbook has excellent receipes that anyone not only Jewish folks should try. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has or hasn't tried Jewish home cooking. You'll love every receipe in the book.
An excellent cookbook for making comfort, homecoming, celebration or just plain family supper dishes.......2005-11-07
How to Cook Like a Jewish Grandmother: Old-Fashioned Jewish Recipes is a cookbook focused on plain, old-fashioned taste. Recipes do not include any modern nutritional guidelines or calorie counts; they focus on creating food that is pleasing to the palate, in accordance with the principle that "You don't have to be a Jewish grandmother to cook like one." Recipes are straightforward, using easily available ingredients and spelled out with simple instructions. Sample dishes include Fried Salami and Eggs, Grandma's Pickled Cucumbers and Onions, Betty's Tater Dogs, Heartwarming Baked Apples, Matzo Meal Fried Chicken, and more. An excellent cookbook for making comfort, homecoming, celebration or just plain family supper dishes.
Great.......2005-10-22
You do not need to be a grandmother or Jewish to cook like you. This book shares the love the author had for her grandmother, which is filled with delicious recipes for any occasion.
Marla Brooks is an Los Angeles-based entertainment writer. Her family ran Slobod's Delicatessen in Philadelphia in the 30's and 40's. She grew up eating fantastic food, and decided to share these wonderful recipes.
Throughout this nice book, there are photos of her family. These photos help show readers how much Brooks' family and heritage meant to her.
The recipes are not difficult at all, so you do not need to be an expert to enoy this book. And if you are, you may enjoy the comfort of having home cooking as opposed to gourmet meals.
As you may wonder, there are some terminologies that a lot of people would be unfamiliar with. Brooks includes an index to explain Jewsih words and terms.
Some of the tasty recipes included in this book are: Grandma's Hot Beef Borscht, Passover Potato Latkes, Yummy Lentil Soup, and Grandma's Old-Fashioned Gefilte Fish. Also, due to Brooks' profession, she managed to obtain recipes from other Jewish entertainers, such as Richard Simmons and Dr. Ruth Westheimer.
The book is broker down into the following chapters: Breakfast / Brunch; Appetizers; Soups and Stews; Salads; Sandwiches; Entrees; Vegetables and Side Dishes; Desserts; Holiday Dishes; Glossary and more.
For regular meals or parties, surprise your family and friends and whip up some meals from this book. It will take you back in time and bring back the feeling of comfort!
Simply Delicious!.......2005-08-24
With all due respect to Ms. Sidlow's grandmother, I disagree with the previous review. As the book clearly states, these are "Old Fashioned Jewish Recipes, not "Old Fasioned Kosher Recipes" so what's the big tsimmes about it not being Kosher? I grew up on many of the recipes found in this book and enjoyed it immensely. As the author explains in the introduction, the majority of these recipes come from a family delicatessen which catered to a largely immigrant neighborhood in the 1930s, and if kreplach, blintzes, borscht, gedempte fleish, chopped liver, kasha, latkes, corned beef and grebenes aren't Jewish, then I don't know what is. Personally, I'd rather have a piece of honey cake than mandel bread any day and while Ms. Sidlow is entitled to her opinion, its all a matter of taste, isn't it? This book reminds me of home and I loved every mouthwatering page of it.
Definitely not MY grandmother!.......2005-08-20
I think my grandmother would be horrified. There are a couple nice recipes but for the most part, this book is not very jewish or kosher...Bobby Vinton's recipe for stuffed cabbage? Come on now! Not even one recipe for mandelbread. If I could find my receipt, I'd probably return this book.

Tiger Woods success in golf (and in life) is not an accident. There s no doubt that he was born with a special talent, but Tiger also has nine traits that have allowed him to express that talent in extraordinary ways. These nine traits have helped Tiger become a champion, and they can help you lay a solid foundation for an outstanding business career and a fulfilling life. Tiger Traits describes how Tiger developed his natural talents and created a compelling dream for his life, who his heroes and mentors were, and how all of this helped him not just on the golf course but also in his journey to become a top entrepreneur in the world of sports. The lessons Tiger's life teaches us how to acquire confidence, use mental models to create success in advance, take intelligent and enthusiastic action, improve incrementally to produce massive results, tap into the power of personality to gain allies and build teams, and create greater success through giving to others can help any businessperson to attain greater success and satisfaction.

Written by success coach Nate Booth, Tiger Traits: 9 Success Secrets You Can Discover from Tiger Woods to be a Business Champion is a unique guide to business and life lessons that anyone can learn from golf prodigy Tiger Woods. From "Identify and Develop Natural Talents" to "Be Confident", "Let Actions Do the Talking", "Be Likeable", and "Be Grateful, Give Back", each of the nine positive character factors is scrutinized at length, its benefits analyzed and illuminated through real-world examples. An excellent motivational and self-improvement guide sure to especially resonate with professional golf buffs.
TIGER TRAITS Reviewed by Ralph Williams.......2007-04-16
Nate Booth's Tiger Traits has a wonderful way of exposing the tiger inside each of us. Even better, Nate takes on the role of a seasoned, professional caddy and shows each of us how to play the championship course of life. As anyone who plays the game of golf will tell you, there's more than one set of tees to play from. After reading and applying Nate's observations, I will feel much more confident playing the game of life from the championship tees.
When Nate writes about discovering one's natural talents, he gives us clear direction on what we should look for. When it comes to our individual weaknesses, he shows us how to manage them with honor.
While many may buy this book because of its reference to Tiger, I recommend this book because it gives all of us a better chance to tap into the natural and developed gifts of the author, Nate Booth.
In closing, I bought a copy of Tiger Traits for each of our five grown sons. It's a club I want in each of their bags.

How to find what you are good at and then use it to make your life better.......2007-04-07
One of the staples in the business - motivation literature is the use of sports and sports heroes to illustrate a set of constructive traits the author shares with you. Here, Nate Booth has written a book that motivates the reader by illustrating the nine principles he provides in the book (and a tenth bonus principle online) through the life and career of the phenomenal golfer, Tiger Woods. The author is clear that Tiger has NOTHING to do with the book, does not endorse it, and is in no way affiliated with him. I guess this disclaimer is necessary in this age of total marketing, branding, and so forth. However, if you go to your bookstore and look at all the books based on the lives of various people without their endorsement, you could fill many shelves.
The main focus of the book, as I read it, is about taking control of your life by finding out what you are truly good at (the author provides you with some sound ways to tell), to develop a compelling dream around that talent, to get the right role models - teachers - supporters who will help you along the path, being confident, getting the right mental models, talk through actions, continually improve, be likeable (as an aside, while Tiger is famous and charismatic, I am not sure he is necessarily likeable nor am I sure he is concerned about it), and giving back.
Booth provides a post nine-hole (nine-principle) cool down where he summarizes of what he was trying to teach through the book and hopes the reader has learned. He also offers some recommended reading.
The book is NOT only about Tiger. Booth provides some excellent quotes from all kinds of past greats, from Aristotle, Woodrow Wilson, Winston Churchill, Mark Twain, Walt Disney, and even Jiminy Cricket (and many others). I enjoyed these brief quotations a great deal.
If you enjoy motivational reading and are interested in Tiger Woods, this is a book for you.
My Post-Book Cool-Down.......2007-04-06
Tiger Woods had to wait two years after winning his first big tournament, to win a second one. Did he ever get discouraged? You bet, but he never let consistent losses kill his spirit. Dr. Nate Booth urges us to apply the principles of winning to our business problems, for the solutions that worked for Tiger might also help us earn more money and success. The traits of likability (it is said that Tiger never forgets a face and always remembers the names of the children and wives of everyone he meets) will put you in good stead when it comes to your career and success will be a birdie in the hand.
Booth is an exciting and spirited writer. I would love to see him do a fullscale informercial that would help us put the story of Tiger in perspective. He's got a nice balance of inflation and restraint, and he knows his facts. Most people know Tiger is of mixed race, but Booth has the eugenics at his tingertips. For the record, "his father is half African American, a quarter American Indian and a quarter Chinese, and his mother is half Thai, a quarter Chinese and a quarter white." Booth allows us to see Tiger's rise to fame as steps on a Joseph Campbell like journey--the hero with a thousand faces, and here, a thousand races.
All the same, there's something a little crazy about this book, for although it says in big letters that Tiger Woods and the Tiger Woods Foundation have nothing whatsoever to so with TIGER TRAITS, it's selling largely on Woods' name, not on the name of Dr. Nate Booth I presume. Isn't there a law against this kind of abuse? It would be like if I wrote, say, a cookbook and called it "Tiger's Recipes," as long as I had a disclaimer saying, "These recipes were not tasted nor tried by Tiger Woods, but they were inspired by his joie de vivre." I would call that cheating, but apparently in the world of business books and motivational speakers, anything not nailed down is fair game.

The Secret Life of Tigers documents the family life of three tigresses and their cubs from soon after birth to adulthood. An extraordinary account if records for the first time the active role the male tiger plays as a father.

Wonderful book!.......2001-07-10
Simply the best book ever put together about tigers. Valmik Thapar knows his subjects! He explains more about tiger behavior and family life than any other author reporting on the topic. His greatest work is probably on the role of the tiger father--he proves, with ground breaking photographs, that male tiger fathers actually care for and are affectionate for their young. It's a very good book, by the world's foremost expert on tiger family life. I give it an A+ and a must for any true tiger lover!

With the life of Samuel Seabury on the pages discribed in detail and the photos that acompany the text you can get a real feel for the man and his time. All of this against the backdrop of New York City Politics. Samuel Seabury was known in all circles as standing for the height of ethics in his time. Something lacking on todays political landscape. A facinating read that never slows page after page.

Customer Reviews:
Should be titled: Easy Quilts from Snippet Projects.......2002-03-09
If you wished the first book had more info about making snippet projects into quilts, this is the book for you! I was going to give this book three stars because I felt the title was misleading (I'm not interested in quilting and was looking for new snippet projects), but I give the book five stars because it contains solid information about incorporating snippet projects into quilts. Regardless, I'll pay more attention to the sample pages next time.
I enjoyed the large project gallery and have even applied some quilting techniques to framing my pieces, but I think most people buy this book on the assumption that it contains much of what made the first book so great: lavish coverage of the snippet techniques, step by step project instructions, and a large gallery of projects made using discussed techniques.
Instead, this book does a quick review of the snippet process before launching into the quilt info. The projects and gallery center on pieces that only use a snippet piece to enhance it. For example, a recreation of an anicient Egyptian costume contains a sphinx made with snippets and in the piece based on plane nose art (like the Enola Gaye) the woman's dress is made from snippets.
If you're just beginning, buy the first Snippet Sensations book. If you're intermediate and want to flex your skills on more advanced pieces, skip this book and spend the cash on some new fabric and try making a piece based on a picture you'd find in of those Dover books (art, coloring, etc.). No matter you're skill level, if you think you'd like to work big and/or want to make wall hangings or something similar, this book is a good one to add to your library.
Best book ever for Beginner or Advanced Creative Quilter!.......2001-12-18
I have had a heck of a time starting to quilt, as I am afraid of color selection, that is- until I bought this book! This is the most fun I've had in years! The designs are beautiful, fun, and belive it or not, EASY! I am just a beginner! You can complete a project in about a day! This book is fantastic! The other snippet book is wonderful too! If you don't buy these books, you are a crazy quilt, or a bump on a log cabin!
don't waste your time.......2001-08-31
If you have read one of the Snippet books, it seems you've learned all she has to teach. My book arrived yesterday and it is on it's way back today. Flipping once through it was enough. She even uses the same pattern of the dolphins as your included pattern and the vase and flowers that were promnent in her first book...which by the way I loved.
More fun, part two.......2001-08-07
I really enjoyed the first Snippet Sensations book. This book helped me to add to my creativity. If you did not purchase the fist book, this book also explains every step thoroughly. Let your imagination go wild! Thank you, Cindy, for this wonderful technique.
You'll love it!.......2001-07-05
I am not very artistic or crafty but I decided to be brave and try to do a snippets flower vase project. After watching the author construct one on Home & Garden TV, I ordered the book, selected my fabric and supplies, then jumped right in. I was so worried that it would look tacky. But, much to my delight, it turned out fabulous. I still can't believe that I created something so beautiful. Now I am excited about doing a second project to give as a present to my sister. This was soooo easy. The book really helped by providing such wonderful pictures and easy, detailed directions. I would highly recommend giving this book a try. I've just recently purchased the author's first book, Snippet Sensations, to get even more ideas for my next project.

Landscape - Patterns, Perception, and Process.......2007-01-28
I bought this book for a class about two years ago, it was a not required, but my professor suggested it in addition to our required text. After the semester ended, the course was reformatted, and this book was not being bought back. This book sat on the shelf with others I've kept, decided to buy, or also have been left with until about November.
I really wish we had used the book, I wish that I had read it earlier because some of the design principles raised by Bell have dramatically helped to improve my work. I haven't finished the book yet, but it has helped me greatly to understand my own designs to explain them to others, as well as to form a starting point with the idea that humans have certain native proportions, angles, shapes, colors, and patterns that are perceived as beautiful. These concepts are necessary when you are involved in landscape architecture, and I'm very glad I ended up using this book.

I have long struggled with aspects of this part of our marriage, and this book has made a tremendous impact on my marriage already! I have already recommended it to many friends. This is the best thing I've read on this subject, and the author is so conversational and transparent that I feel as though I've made a friend

Notes from the Warsaw Ghetto is the moving account of the horror of the Warsaw Ghetto--written by the recognized archivist and historian of the area while he lived through it. Through anecdotes, stories, and notations--some as brief as was slapped today in Zlota Street,--there emerges the agonizing, eyewitness accounts of human beings caught in the furor of senseless, unrelenting brutality. In the Journal, there is the whole of life in the Ghetto, from the erection of the Wall, in November 1940, for hygienic reasons, through the brief period of deceptive calm to the eventual mass murders. It is a portrait of man tested by crisis, stained at times by the meanness of avarice and self-preservation, illumined more often by moments of nobility.

Very inciteful book. Great reference of the WWII era.......2007-09-24
After I read the book "Diary of Mary Berg" I was so intrigued that I looked up some of the other books that are referenced in the "Diary of Mary Berg". I bought 3 more books from different authors that lived in the Warsaw Ghetto and I have been very pleased with these books because they deal more with the uprising in the ghetto then the diary does. The stories are very emotional and heartfelt. I am not Jewish but I was just as eager to learn from these books about the history of that time. I encourage everyone who may be interested to read this book or others like it to get a better understanding of what life was like in the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII.
A Must Read for An Accurate Account of the Warsaw Ghetto.......2007-09-19
It is many years since I've read "Notes From the Warsaw Ghetto" but it remains fixed in my memory along with Emannuel Ringelblum, who emodies for me the human ideal. In a time and place where death and destruction reigned, a simple teacher, father and husband bore witness to the inhumanity surrounding him. Ringelblum and a few other brave souls, ojectively recorded the daily lives of the inhabitants in the Warsaw Ghetto in considerable detail; describing the planned and enacted starvation, disease (rampant typhoid), the demands of the Germans on the Jewish Council for more and more Jews to be handed over for "deportation" and "resettlement in the East" (in truth the freight cars would carry the deported Jews to death camps of Treblinka and Auschwitz).
His unearthed notes bore witness to the end of Jewish life in Poland and the attempts to maintain the vibrant society that once existed. Ringelblum's notes relate to us that despite the madness that had become their world, and the unknown future they faced, the Jews of the ghetto played music, sat in cafes (without food or drink), educated their children, worshipped, held political debates, prepared young zionist to make aliyah to eretz yisroel, collected arms and prepared to fight back. When the age old question arises; what does it mean to be a human being, I think one need look carefully at the Jews of the Warsaw ghetto to see how humanity can and does flourish despite the evil surrounding it.
A Wide Range of Jewish and Polish Behaviors.......2006-10-12
It is a little-known fact that, during the first two or more years of the German occupation of Poland, Jews were treated better by the Germans than the Poles. Emmanuel Ringelblum alludes to this (March 25, 1940; pp. 24-25), when Poles felt safer masquerading as Jews! Also (August 6, 1940, p. 45): "True, they [Jews] were beaten; but Poles were shot. True, Jews are impressed into work; but Poles are sent out of the country to work...Jews were deported from Cracow in the course of several weeks, Poles in a few hours." (p. 45). Also (January 22, 1942): "The question of who is worse off now, the Jews or the Poles, is often discussed." (p. 248).
Many Holocaust films exhibit a simplistic hagiography of Jews and demonization of Poles. In contrast, Ringelblum appreciates the diversity in the conduct of members of both groups, which can be summarized as follows (April 26, 1941): "[I] heard the opinion expressed that war reveals the best and the worst in people. It's like a high fever, in which everything is clarified. On the one hand, some Christians offer to help the Jews; on the other hand, bestial anti-Semitism; on the one hand stony hearts [among the Jews]; on the other, devoted self-sacrifice to aid those suffering from hunger." (p. 157). As Jews were being ghettoized, Poles showed sympathy in some locations and not in others (p. 45). The same holds for exploiting vs. helping Jews with regards to post-Jewish properties (pp. 51-52).
Polish hoodlums' attacks were not limited to Jewish victims: (February 27, 1941): "On the other side of the Jewish graveyard, young Poles have formed bands that attack Christians as well as Jews." (p. 127). Sometimes Poles came to the defense of Jews under attack by Polish hoodlums.
Ringelblum mentions positive Polish attitudes and helpful Polish actions towards Jews many times (p. 21, pp. 51-52, p. 64, 66, 91, 137, 152, 199, 216-217, 322-323). In terms of generalizations, at least some Jews believed that most local Poles were good to the Jews (May 15, 1941): "The Catholics displayed a far-reaching tolerance...Mr. Isaac estimates the percentage of saintly gentiles in Starograd at 95 per cent." (p. 170). Polish organizations are credited with doing away with Polish blackmailers (October 15, 1942; p. 322).
Ringelblum alludes to the Germans' torching of a synagogue in Lodz and then blaming the Poles for it in an attempt to divide Poles and Jews (p. 39). He also never loses sight of the fact that Poles were also victims of the Germans. He discusses the privations and mass murders of Poles, notably of the Polish intelligentsia, numerous times (p. 21, 26, p. 30, pp. 38-39, 137, 145, 154, 169, 259, 288). The Poles realized that they were "next" when they saw the Jews ghettoized (p. 91).
All illegal acts had to be conducted away from the prying eyes of the Germans and their informers of various nationalities. Ringelblum spoke of Jewish informers (p. 251, 339-340), Jewish Gestapo agents (p. 182, pp. 280-281), and the search for Jews hiding within the ghetto (December 14, 1942): "In 90 percent of the cases it was the Jewish police who uncovered the hideouts. First they found out where the hideouts were; then they passed the information along to the Ukrainians and Germans." (pp. 340-341). Ringelblum doesn't mention the fact that Jewish agents, specially trained for the unmasking of hideouts, were also sent to Polish urban areas, and into fields and forests, in order to uncover Jews hidden by Poles.
A recurrent theme in Ringelblum's diary is the avariciousness of both the Polish Blue Police (Policja Granatowa) as well as the Jewish ghetto police (e. g., p. 145, pp. 154-155). Also (May 25, 1942): "As a result, a smuggler has to buy off four parties: Polish, Jewish, and German policemen, and now civilian agents as well." (p. 278).
In common with other chroniclers, Ringelblum's harshest criticisms are directed against fellow Jews (September 22, 1942): "The Jewish police had a very bad name even before the resettlement. The Polish police didn't take part in the forced-work press gangs, but the Jewish police engaged in that ugly business. Jewish policemen also distinguished themselves with their fearful corruption and immorality. But they reached the height of viciousness during the resettlement...And now people are wracking their brains to understand how Jews, most of them men of culture, former lawyers (most of the police officers were lawyers before the war) could have done away with their brothers with their own hands...Very often, the cruelty of the Jewish police exceeded that of the Germans, Ukrainians, and Letts...For the most part, the Jewish police showed an incomprehensible brutality." (pp. 329-331).
Owing to the actions of the Jewish ghetto police, a relatively small number of Germans and their Ukrainian and Baltic collaborators sufficed to send over 300,000 Warsaw Jews to their deaths at Treblinka (October 15, 1942): "Why could 50 S. S. [SS] men (some people say even fewer), with the help of a division of some 200 Ukrainian guards and an equal number of Letts, carry out the operation out so smoothly?" (p. 310).
During the actual extermination process, there was the Jewish outcry over the fact that the world was not doing anything to stop it. But even what later became known as the Holocaust was at first contextualized by Ringelblum (June 25, 1942): "Why should the world be shaken by our suffering when rivers of blood are spilled daily on every battlefield? In what respect is our Jewish blood more precious than that of the Russian, Chinese, English soldiers?" (p. 296). Ringelblum concluded with several proposals for stopping the extermination of the Jews (pp. 297-298).
Historical Perspective on the Ghetto.......2001-08-19
This book presents a factual chronological statement on the conditions, daily tribulations, and perils of the Warsaw Ghetto. It is written in a documentary style rather than an emotional diary, thus providing a basis to compare and contrast against other "diaries". THIS SAID, it is a moving statement on Warsaw Jewry and their ability to overcome impossible odds, eventhough the overwhelming majority perished. The plethora of historical revisionists that now claim the Holocaust was a hoax must FIRST contend with "Notes"( aginst which they will lose). A truly powerful work.
Holocaust Horror.......2000-03-10
As we each sit in our little world each day perhaps having pity on ourselves. This book should be a guideline to keep us from self-pity. The author fairly reports from diaries gathered throughout the Holocaust Horror. He does not only blame Nazi Germans but Jewish Police. This is a bold, honest reflection into the eyes of children, adolescents, parents, as they were waiting for their fate. This book made me smile about humanitarism even when they truly did not have alot to share. This book made me scared for what the power of humans can do to weaken spirits. It made me cry to realize the horror they felt. I cheered hoping the author would go unharmed. I wept when I realized a man and his family perish because of a cause they firmly defended. True heroism.
Unquestionably, this is one of the best written books I have read pertaining to the tragic historic event. It is an easy reading book however, it is hard to put down once you start.
I will cherish my book always.

Attempting to Live a Normal Life in the German-Established Warsaw Ghetto.......2007-09-05
Owing to the fact that Korczak cared for children, it is not surprising that much of his diary is devoted to this subject. He mentions such challenges as child-care tips, discipline, and attempting to heal sick children. He also noted the pains of ageing that he experienced.
Korczak makes many interesting comments on various subjects. He often discusses what kind of God he believes in. He also writes: "The world doesn't know about a number of great Poles." (p. 8). Korczak mentions Jewish virtues such as cleverness and hard work (p. 102), but also comments: "Jews are cocky and that is why they are scorned. I believe that this will change and maybe even soon." (p. 106).
Unlike other diarists, Korczak devoted little direct attention to German Nazi actions in the Warsaw Ghetto. The consequences, however, were obvious: "A dead boy is lying on the sidewalk. Nearby three boys are fixing something with some rope. At a certain moment they glanced at the body and moved away a few steps, not interrupting their game" (p. 43). Korczak, an obvious intellectual, invited others to discussions in his flat about such topics as Napoleon, Leonardo da Vinci, freedom, destiny and free will, etc. (pp. 77-78). These Jewish behaviors shed light on comparable Polish ones. Holocaust materials have commonly featured the Poles engaged in normal activities (riding a carousel, attending Easter Mass, etc.) while the ghetto was burning--all insinuating the cold indifference of Poles to Jewish suffering. They were no such thing. We see that both Poles and Jews simply attempted to live lives as close to normal as possible in the face of all the horrors surrounding them.
In the introduction, Kulawiec elaborates on Polish efforts to save Janusz Korczak: "When it already became transparent that the days of the orphanage were numbered, friends from the outside proposed concrete plans for his escape. In one such final effort, forged papers were brought, a hide-out in the country prepared, and a safe route mapped out for him. As in all previous offers of help, Korczak declined even this last gesture inasmuch as it was not possible to include all the children in the plans." (p. xi).
