Book Description
If I Get to Five is a one-of-a-kind book by a one-of-a-kind human being. The medical world knows him as Fred Epstein,M.D., the neurosurgeon who pioneered life-saving procedures for previously inoperable tumors in children. His patients and their families know him simply as Dr. Fred, the 'miracle man' who has extended them both a healing hand and an open heart. Throughout his career Epstein's young patients have been his most important teachers and trusted guides. They are children who-often by sheer force of will-have refused to relinquish life and all its gifts. In this inspiring book, these children teach us the lessons we all need to learn in order to live life to the fullest-lessons about seizing the moment and facing our deepest fears, about embracing the joy and wonder of everyday life. Most of all, they teach lessons about uncommon courage-the courage to do what's hardest, to believe in what we don't understand, to love without boundaries. If I Get to Five takes us inside a world unlike any other, from the high-stakes, high-tech operating room where life and death are separated by a heartbeat to the sickrooms and recovery rooms where parents discover the limits and power of their faith. But most compelling of all is the journey inside the hearts, minds, and souls of the wisest children you will ever encounter. No one who reads this remarkable book will ever look at children-or adversity-in the same way.

Surprises You.......2007-02-16
I had to read this for a class. Thing is, I went in thinking it was too fluffy and idealistic. But for some reason I couldn't stop reading, and when I was half way through it I realized that I was actually being affected by the readings. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys inspirational stories, who are going through hard times with a medically fragile child, or who need to be reminded why they got into the health profession in the first place. He writes about many of his patients, the lessons each one taught him about life, how he deals with pain and loss, and explains medical jargon. I enjoyed this book and would gladly recommend it to anyone who asked about it.
One of my favorite books because.......2005-06-01
your heart feels every emotion. You can read this book in one day you will not want to put it down. Page to page you want to know what is going to happen to Dr. Fred. Not often can learn of someones struggles, and ask the hard qusetions to yourself. The "whys" in this man's life are hard to understand. Until you know that to him living is enough. This book will make you laugh, cry, never want to give up.
Courage and Character.......2004-12-15
During the summer or 2004, I was at a junction in my professional path where I found myself in desperate need of encouraging words. I went into the hospital bookstore and found this. The book is simple, the narrative is not as flamboyant as John Stone's "In the Country of Hearts", but it strikes a chord, confirming a fact that we already know to be true: children are much more capable of opening their hearts and minds than adults. To capture the stories of these patients requires a man of courage and character, and I get the feeling that it's exactly what makes Fred Epstein a very special man, and physician.
On a side note, this book was instrumental in finding a neurosurgeon for my niece's classmate. I had just read the book, and gave it to my mother to read. Just two weeks after she got the book, we heard that this little girl had a tumor and had been flown to see some specialists in Miami. After communicating with that family, they were able to get a consult from Dr. Epstein, and she is now recovering, although her prognosis still remains uncertain.
Whimsical clichés about sick children, but no real depth.......2004-09-23
Fred Epstein is some sort of folk-hero of a man: Moved by righteous anger to battle against the evil cancers that threaten the lives of innocents, he performs miracles, curing "inoperable" tumours in his bespoke Neverneverland kids hospital.
Whilst parents of a sick child may find solace or interest here, this book (and I appreciate that this view will be unpopular) did nothing for me.
The narrative reads across between a religio-medical manifesto and a self-help book. For every hundred words of anecdote about a child who fought cancer, there's another hundred of pop-philosophising. There are glimpses of the children's brilliance, and one can appreciate the resilience that Epstein is trying to convey, but there is just too little detail here to do more than produce a colour-wash of feeling. It is this that fails to portray the depth of the situation, as any parent could easily empathise and little more understanding is offered by this book. Rather than giving a true insight into the life of a paediatric neurosurgeon, or any more than a superficial glimpse into the lives of his patients and their parents, this comes across as a pseudo-religious pick and mix of ideas, faith and assertions set against a candy-floss coated spiel about the courage, pluck and strength of children.
Whilst there are undoubtedly some amazing stories here - not least Epstein's own as he struggles to recover from a brain haemorrhage with the distant hope of operating again - they are glossed over and whilst any individual's story would be fascinating, these soundbite snippets and clichés form an insubstantial whole that fails to do justice to Epstein or his charges.
Epstein is clearly writing from the heart and to not enjoy his book is not to denigrate the fantastic work he has done for these children and their parents. For parents of children facing surgery, this may be a valuable support and readers who appreciate this tale might also like Albom's Tuesdays with Morrie. For other readers interested in the processes of treatment and recovery, but not fans of the self-help platform, I recommend instead McCrum's My Year Off, Diamond's C: Because Cowards Get Cancer Too and Vertosick's When the Air Hits the Brain.

Please ! don't let this one go unread........2004-02-06
I read alot but I don't write that many reviews. This one has to have one. I was ok for the first one hundred pages but on page 108 something happened and I read the rest in tears. This is a great lesson for parents of sick children and parents of seemingly well children. After all we as parents are not given any promises. I checked this copy out from the library but I want my own copy to make notes in and keep on my own shelf. I plan on letting my friends and family in on this little gem.

Using the many tricks up her sleeve, nutritionist Evelyn Tribole can get just about anyone to eat healthy. Hate the thought of tofu? Try her Chocolate Marble Cheesecake, with tofu replacing some of the cream cheese. Her daughter did, and now she's a convert. Don't want to add fiber because it sounds so bland? Try her Dark Fudge Brownies, with puréed black beans giving each brownie as much fiber as a slice of whole wheat bread.
With more than 100 recipes that sneak fiber, calcium, and other nutrients into the diet, Stealth Health can turn even the most devoted junk food junkie into a health nut. For "vegetable haters" there's Chicken Chile Verde, which features finely chopped spinach masquerading as green chilis. For "fruit skimpers," try the Purple Cow sMOOthie with mixed berries and nonfat frozen yogurt. And if you're a "milk miser," drink up your calcium in the delicious form of Home Express Coffee Latte. (Tribole came up with these and other labels to describe nutritional problem areas, and you can take her diagnostic quiz to find out which one fits you.)
Each of the book's eight chapters features recipes, nutritional information, and charts showing five ways to "sneak" healthy foods into meals. And if you still need more convincing, Tribole weaves in the scientific evidence for the role of nutritious foods in fighting everything from cancer to osteoporosis to heart disease. Tribole, who has celebrity clients and has appeared on Good Morning America, says the way to get finicky children to eat healthy is to whip up one of her recipes without telling them the ingredients. "This approach works well with adults, too," she writes. "The basis of Stealth Health cooking is tasting is believing."
Book Description
A nationally recognized nutritionist and bestselling cookbook author has tasty, easy solutions for vegetable haters, fiber deprivers, fruit skimpers, and fat lovers everywhere.
It's no secret that a plate of broccoli is better for you than a bag of french fries. But given the choice, who wouldn't choose the latter? Now, for the many people who want to eat more healthily but don't--whether because of food aversion, intolerance, or lack of availability--health expert Evelyn Tribole offers simple and delicious strategies for "sneaking" healthy foods into a daily diet. Stealth Health offers a chapter-by-chapter guide to each of the key food groups with easy strategies, helpful charts, and mouthwatering recipes that maximize nutrition for the whole family--from sweet and sour pork, red pepper hummus, and twice baked potatoes to mango mousse and blackberry crustless pie. Customer Reviews:
A great start for getting on the path to more healthy eating.......2005-05-24
The purpose of this book is to assist the average person with "sneaking" more healthy food into their diet. These stealth tips take on a variety of forms, from adding grated vegetables to baked goods to identifying foods that meet a variety of nutritional needs to creating delicious yet healthy meals.
Each chapter of the book is devoted to a specific dietary requirement, including increasing your intake of vegetables, fruit, calcium, soy products, beans, fiber, and iron plus decreasing your intake of fat. Author Tribole first makes a compelling case for WHY that particular nutritional need is important and then offers various suggestions for meeting this need. Every chapter also includes 5 ways to add the food to your meals, 20 ways to increase the food in your diet, and a nice selection of recipes. So far, the recipes I have (Harvest Granola and Breakfast Pudding) have been both easy-to-make and very tasty. I can't wait to make the Marble Cheesecake with Tofu!
My one disappointment with this book was the vegetable chapter. I was hoping that this section would give me ideas for my husband, who doesn't like most vegetables, but I thought that most of the suggestions were either things that I had already seen elsewhere or things that wouldn't work for someone who doesn't like vegetables to begin with. Still, I was impressed with this book overall, and I definitely plan to continue trying the recipes as well as the more unique eating strategies.
Healthy, yes; simple, no........2001-11-16
The recipes in this book are healthy but they are not neccessarily easy or quick to prepare. If you are cooking for others they may be fooled by the "sneak" ingredients but after all the shopping, chopping, & measuring entailed in preparing these dishes, the cook sure won't be fooled. Many recipes are very difficult to prepare without a food processor and some ingredients are not to be found in the average grocery store. I was hoping for recipes that required less preparation & simpler ingredients. The book was not a total dissappointment; the recipes were tasty but if you are looking for shortcuts to good nutrition, look elsewhere.
Yummy and Healthy.......2001-07-29
I have been wanting to purchase this book for a long time. However, I have been disappointed with other books that promised great tasting recipes for health and didn't want to waste more money. Finally,I decided to purchase Stealth Health through the used section of Amazon.com, which was a very good experience in itself. The good experience did not end there. Every recipe we have tried from this book has been delicious!!! My husband does not eat bran cereal, but did in The Date Nut Bran Muffins and didn't even know it(still doesn't know it). I used dates and nuts in half of the batch for my taste and raisins in the other half for his. I really dislike cauliflower, but couldn't even tell it was in the Twice-Baked Potatoes-and I was the one that prepared the potatoes. Both of us enjoy rice pudding. The Golden Rice Pudding and all of the recipes can be enjoyed without feeling quilty. As for the other Healthy Cook Books purchased in the past-they will be donated to make room for other books written by Evelyn Tribole.
Love the recipes!.......2001-01-17
This book is great! I've already tried three recipes and thought they were all tasty, esp. the Carrot Cake Smoothie! My only criticism of this book is that there don't seem to be many "quick" recipes, the sort that you can throw together in 30 minutes after a long day at work. The main dish recipes I looked at required a blender/food processor, a stovetop, AND the oven. For me, that's a little too much too accomplish after work!
Moms, Nutritionists, Dieters--Everybody Buy This Book.......2000-12-24
This book is by far the best book on eating healthfully. Why? Because Evelyn teaches you how to sneak "good food" (veggies, fiber, even soy) into "normal food". Yeah, we all know we should eat cruciforous veggies, more fiber, some soy, fruits, etc. But we don't. Evelyn shows you ways to pump up the nutritional value of foods you like--in a way that you won't even notice. Adding black beans to brownies is one solution--and it works (adds fiber, phytochemicals) and the brownies taste good, not healthy. She teaches you to puree cauliflower into your potatoes, so that you get the boost of nutrition. (I HATE cauliflower, but I don't mind eating it this way). All in all, I can't wait for more Stealth Health recipes. If you have kids, doubting husbands, or just plain don't like the taste of healthy food, buy this book. :) If you do like healthy food, this book will amaze you with how good healthy eating can taste.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful addition.......2007-01-14
I try to get books that have a lot of different styles and this one is a good book. I like it a lot.
Multi-use Book for anybody who loves using Asian fabrics.......2005-08-13
The wonderful color photos in this book go a long way to inspire lovers of Asian fabrics to try new techniques for sewing, stenciling, stamping, and creating graceful works with their stash of Asian fabrics.
Stencils and patterns are included, as well as techniques that are simple and straightforward. The book is aptly named, because it really does inspire one to create beautiful objects with Japanese fabrics.
A nice introduction to adding a Japanese touch.......2004-02-26
This book is full of ideas for sewing projects with Japanese flair. It does seem to be meant more for beginner-intermediate sewers, as there are quite a few pages on how to do piecing and appliqué (by hand and machine), as well as basic embroidery. However, the introductions to dip-dyeing, stenciling and gilding are nice extras that you don't often see in quilting books.
Overall the designs are fun, elegant and easy to make. My favorite part of the book is the templates and motifs - they're rather simple, but still good additions to a design library.
I give this book four stars out of five because although it's well done, it lacks depth and inspiration, especially compared to other books on the subject. Wonderful as an introduction and for beginner-intermediate sewers and quilters, but those already familiar with Japanese motifs and textiles will gain only a little new insight.
Sushi anyone?.......2001-08-12
Calling all quilters with a taste for the Orient! This book has really super projects with a distinctly Japanese flair. The projects are refreshing and interesting. The book is divided into seasons. My favorite season in the book was fall. I liked all of the projects in that section!
The use of colors and material was first rate. The illustrations, especially the ones showing the individual cut pieces laid out and the fabric sample charts for each project were quite helpful. I wish other project books were laid out this way. It makes it much easier to get an idea of what you might do.
This is a fun book, both to look at and to use. I have already recommended this book to several of my friends and they have all bought one. If you like this type of thing, you might also like Fabled Flowers, Fantastic Fabric Folding and/or Quilting with Japanese Fabrics.

Customer Reviews:
Informed choices.......2003-09-26
This book is an excellent, easy to read reference, that informs women by giving accurate, up to date information regarding pregnancy, birth and family planning. Ronnie Lichtman,CNM has introduced a fresh format in which midwifery care is introduced and midwives are included throughout this comprehensive guide as primary healthcare providers for women. This book gives different alternatives regarding providers, birth settings such as hospitals, free standing birthing centers, hospital birth centers, and home births and different types of collaborative practices available.
Pregnancy is acknowledged as a healthy state, not a medical event and that our bodies are designed to bring life into the world, they are "biologically competent". Complications are discussed, but women should walk away with the knowledge that childbearing is safe and that they have many birth options available to them.
I applaud Lynn Simpson, MD and Allan Rosenfield, MD for continuing to believe as did Dr.Guttmacher, of each woman's right to have information about her body and of her ability to enter into a partnership with her physician or midwife and make informed choices.
As one her former students, I would like to thank Ronnie for expanding women's options for midwifery care through the sharing of her knowledge and experience, and for working so hard to provide her colleagues and midwifery students an open path in which to practice.
I highly recommend this book.
An important book, updated by Ronnie Lichtman.......2003-06-23
I've read many books on the subject and this one is easily the best. Ronnie Lichtman C.N.M., Ph.D. is one of America's foremost midwives. Her writing style and expertise add new dimension to an already great book. It has everything an expectant mother could possibly want to know. Though there are many books on pregnancy and childbirth, this is the one that will be passed down to future generations. I recommend it highly.
a must have for expectant mothers.......2000-07-14
This book is essential for expectant mothers. It covers in depth information on weekly fetal development, symptoms during pregnancy, preparing for the arrival of the baby, and birth and delivery. This book also covers multiple births, and family planning methods. This book gives detailed information on sexual organs and conception.

Alan Guttmacher, who wrote the original editions of this book, was a famous teacher, a humane and sensible doctor, and the beloved mentor of the second author, Irwin Kaiser, my father. Dad was revered and respected by his own patients, who, for him, were the most important thing in the world; and Dad was proud that Guttmacher's estate chose him to carry on the work of "The Book", which he did with enthusiasm and dedication through several issues, always keeping up with medical knowledge and current sensibilities, especially feminist concerns.
Dad died this morning, March 17, 1999, at the age of 81.

editorial rewies.......2003-07-09
Dear Sir, I have noticed the recent changes in the Amazon's Website of my book:"My Just War" and I would like to propose that some excerpts from other editorial reviews be also added: 1.From "Publisher's Weekly" of Jan.26,1998: 2.from "Parameters"US Army War College Journal.Spring 2001.From the"Canadian Jewish News",April !998;4. the "Jerusalem Post" and the "The Jerusalem Report", July 13 and August 1998. There were also many very favorable rewies in many local papers in the USA as well as in England. With many thanks, Gabriel temikn.
My Just War.......2002-12-13
My Just War was with a doubt a very good book especially if you're intrested in ww2. It had alot of detail about what Gabriel Temkin had to go through fighting both as a red army soilder and being a jew. I think that this book should also be made into a movie so that everyone could see what it was like to be a soilder during ww2. I would recamend this book to anyone who can read it might teach some people some respect for their elders.
Good first person account of the Soviet WWII.......2002-09-03
The book is a first person account from a non-Western perspective of WWII. I think one of the book's most interesting aspects is that it was written from the Soviet side, which I found very difficult to find (most eye witness books of WWII, published in English, are by Germans). The book is written in a simple style (you can see the author is not a professional novel writer) and is focussed on a very narrow window of the war, i.e. the window he saw. In that window though, some very interesting facts are relayed: treatment of Jews by the Germans and their allies, treatment of Germans and their allies by the Russians, etc. The other fact Temkin portrays very well is the attitude and atmosphere pervailing in the Russian army. Overall, the book can get trivial at times, but I would reccommend it to a WWII reader.
A wonderful and inspiring book - read it!.......2002-03-01
This is simultaneously a moving story of the ability of the human spirit to survive the unthinkable and a fascinating account of Russia at war, as seen from ground level. The real wonder of the book is that Mr.Temkin - who lost home and family in the Holocaust, who endured appalling privations in Soviet labour battalions, who survived capture by the Nazi and the suspicions of the NKVD of escaped prisoners, who fought his way from the Don to Budapest in an infantry unit, who built a new life after the war as a Polish academic, only to become a refugee again in 1968, and who ultimately created a new life for himself and his family in the United States - could not just prevail, but do so with the generosity of spirit that radiates from every page of this book. A sub-theme of the story, equally inspiring, is Mr.Temkin's relationship to his wife, who suffered little less than himself, but who stayed a faithful support over sixty years. There is enough raw material in this book for a dozen novels but, the personal story aside, the most fascinating aspects are the details provided of what it was like to be a tiny cog in the massive Soviet war machine, not in a crack armoured or artillery or Guards unit, but in one of the vast multitude of "rifle divisions" - infantry units equipped with little more than the weapons from which they took tier name and dependent on "the horse with ten toes" for movement over vast distances and on the four-legged variety for transport of their supplies. Mr.Temkin's division could boast two motor vehicles by the end of the war - US-made jeeps for senior officers, and for the rest differed little from the units that had fought in the Crimea almost a century earlier. Much of the story makes painful reading, and spares us nothing, including details of the trail of rape and massacre cut through the civilian populations of Eastern Europe as the Soviet army, thirsty for revenge, lunged westwards. Despite all the horror - and the knowledge of the underlying tragedy of the loss of almost all the writer's family - this is a book filled with hope and inspiration. Its greatest merit may be that it rescues from oblivion so many decent, unassuming and courageous people - family members, peasants, army comrades - who live again in these pages. It is a wonderful book. Read it - and give it to your children and friends to read as well.
Interesting first person account........2001-12-22
I always enjoy reading first person accounts. This book was fair and was worth reading because of the few first person accounts of WWII from the Russian perspective. I found it fascinating that the author and his peers could readily see the evil in Nazism but so quickly overlook the crimes and brutality of Stalin's Russia. Another fascinating aspect was to see how backwards and brutal the soviet army was at that time (both to the enemy and its own people), yet it's soldiers still fought on with conviction.
