    Book Description

When astronaut Michael Foale said good-bye to his family on May 16, 1997 to join the Russian space station Mir, it hadn't seemed like anything more than a routine mission. But within days of his arrival in space, everything started to go wrong. First there was a horrific collision, then a series of computer crashes which endangered the lives of the inhabitants trapped inside the ageing, orbiting module. Suddenly the dangers of space became terrifyingly real.

All the way through his ordeal, Michael - whose quick thinking and natural leadership quickly earned him a reputation as the hero of the mission - was communicating with his parents on a daily basis, giving them the exclusive, inside account of the events as they unfolded. His father Colin Foale, found himself becoming the mouthpiece on earth for the events that were happening 240 miles above him in space. As a former RAF pilot, Colin had first hand experience of the kind of split-second life or death decisions his son was facing in space. In this case, he could only watch as the events unfolded. In this gripping account of a real-life space adventure, Colin Foale has painted a moving portrait of courage in the most hostile environment imaginable. Through Michael's early interest in space, family tragedy, NASA selection and training, this is Michael's extraordinary story as told by the one man who knows him best. WAYSTATION TO THE STARS is the only account of the Mir crisis to give the truth behind the headlines.

4 out of 5 stars An Enthusiastic Astronaut.......2002-01-17

This is the story of Michael Foale's stay aboard Mir, as related by his father Colin. It would be hard to find a more enthusiastic and joyful astronaut than Michael, even though his life had been touched by tragedy he seems to have enjoyed every moment of what was an eventful and dangerous mission aboard Mir. Fire, collision, computer failure - the spacecraft was a basket case, but Michael was unfailingly cheerful as he helped patch it up as well as keep in contact with a multitude of correspondents by e-mail.

His father tells Michael's story as well as that of his family and he share's his son's delight in life. This is a remarkable story of what could so easily have been a tale of bitter disappointment.

Reccomended reading for those interested in the US-Russian space alliance in general and Mir in particular.

5 out of 5 stars Something special that makes me continue dreaming........2000-06-02

As a Brit, and having followed Mike Foales exploits at NASA this book just adds to the hope that some things really are possible, no matter how hard they may seem. But the beauty of it is simply that through this book, he seems just a normal guy, just like any of us. It doesn't swamp you with the science, but shows the human side to the challenges we face, and makes you smile through little things like him reminding his wife to pay the bills whilst he's on the Mir and promising to put the rubbish out again once he's back.

Having read "Dragonfly" I was worried that it would be a re-hash, but I can say that it most certainly is not. The tone is different (no doubt because it is written by his father) and it adds a far greater insight into what the crew experienced.

It was definitely "un-put-downable" and I've even re-read the book which, trust me, I rarely do. Definitely the best by a long way in comparison with "Dragonfly" and Linenger's new offering.

One wife of an Apollo Astronaut once said, "If you think it's hard being an astronaut, you should be his wife." In this book the viewpoint of Colin Foal, a RAF pilot with a distinguished career in his own right, shows the view of the Foale Clan here in the US and England whlie son and NASA Astronaut Michael Foal spends 4 months on the Mir Space Station. During his stay, astronaut Foale contends with an onboard collision, power failures and the workings of Mir, built for 5 years in space and still going on. On earth the Foale family contends with the media quick to point out the problems of the weary station without recognizing the achievements made by Foale and his Russian crewmates. A great read to gain insight into living on the Mir and how the family at home copes with the perils of spaceflight.

      Book Description

What is it like to grow up with a sibling who is difficult or damaged?

Few bonds in our lives are as psychologically and emotionally significant as the ones we share with our sisters and brothers, although little has been written about this formative relationship. In this first-of-its-kind book, psychotherapist Jeanne Safer takes us into the hidden world of problem siblings and explores the far-reaching effects on the lives of those who are considered the “normal ones.”

Drawing on more than sixty interviews with normal, or intact, siblings, Safer explores the daunting challenges they face, and probes the complex feelings that can strain families and damage lives. A “normal” sibling herself, Safer chronicles her own life-shaping experiences with her troubled brother. She examines the double-edged reality of normal ones: how they both compensate for their siblings’ abnormality and feel guilty for their own health and success. With both wisdom and empathy, she delineates the “Caliban Syndrome,” a set of personality traits characteristic of higher-functioning siblings: premature maturity, compulsion to achieve, survivor guilt, and fear of contagion.

Essential reading for normal ones and those who love them, this landmark work offers readers insight, compassion, and tools to help resolve childhood pain. It is a profound and eye-opening examination of a subject that has too long been shrouded in darkness.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Important but Imbalanced .......2006-12-14

I opened this book with interest on many levels. To start with, I'm a social worker and looked forward to reading a book that deals with a subject few authors have looked at--the emotional toll of a special needs sibling on the healthy sibling. As a parent, I had particular interest. Of my four children, three had special needs and my youngest child was the "normal one." While she was growing up, I was acutely aware of the scars this might leave and hoped that this book could provide pointers about what I could do as a parent to ameliorate that effect.

The book is a contribution because it provides validation to so many people (some of whom have expressed themselves quite eloquently in other reviews on this site) who have suffered as a result of being the "normal" sibling. But the book offered almost no redeeming messages, especially for parents. There was some material on how "normal" sibs can heal themselves as adults but otherwise, the book was an unmitigately grim catalogue of one after another depressing story of being emotionally damaged, neglected and hurt by being the "normal" one. There were few if any redemptive messages and, worse, no guidance for parents of special needs children how to minimize the damage to their healthy children.

Perhaps because of my social work training, I worked very hard to make sure my youngest daughter got as much focus and attention as was feasible. When she was growing up, I felt it was essential as my healthy child's emotional needs--as much as time allowed--by taking her out to movies and ice cream, making sure I listened to her concerns, cuddling her and talking honestly to her about my own predicament of trying to be there for her AND her high-maintenance, intermittently very disturbed older siblings, and inviting her to speak openly to me about her resentments. I spoke to her teachers and school administration so they were aware of the home circumstances in which she was living and the impact that might have on her academics, homework, socialization, and in-school behavior. I arranged for her to see a therapist. For a while she found it helpful, then she stopped going and recently, she started again with a new therapist whom she seems to like.

But I know that these measures can't make up for the large chunks of time I haven't been able to devote to her, for the chaos that often characterized the household, and the trauma of being exposed to some of the scenes she unfortunately witnessed.

So I would have liked some guidance (I still would), not merely validation, commiseration and bemoaning, from the author of this book. The book was a good idea but essentially, it ended where the real work should have begun--in offering far more guidance and hope to the "normal sibling" reader and to parents as well.

      4 out of 5 stars Strong emotions.......2006-06-23

I think the subject of a sibling that is different is a very touchey feely one. However, I think peoples defense of people with disabilities and their own exclamations that this does not happen in their family does not belittle the fact that the caliban syndrome does exist. I believe in small families the syndrome is more pronounced and that in larger families with greater sibling support the affects of estrangement that is brought on by the different child can be countered by an understanding that responsiblity will not fall on one or two siblings alone.
I have a brother with autism who is two years older than me. Despite that fact of the variance her brother and mine, I found that indeed the symptoms she described were not mine alone. I have been going through therapy for the past year and not until this have I realized the profound emotions I have toward him. Despite the fact that he is only two years older I felt that he had been a stranger to me my whole life. He had from childhood been self-abvusive and physical lashed out at my younger mentally retarded brother. At age 11 he was sent to a live in school. Around this time I developed an acute abandonment anxiety. Strange as it was it wasn't until this year that I had tied the two pieces together.

If you're the sibling of a difficult brother or sister and feel overwhelmed this book will help you learn that you are not alone.
Again the symptoms described in this book are often brought about by extreme circumstances and may not accurately reflect everyones difficulty with a sibling who is just plain difficult. Still for someone with conflicting feelings to their siblings this book will raise the wordsb they dared not speak before.

5 out of 5 stars shedding light on a taboo subject.......2006-02-13

I found this book after one of my "difficult / disabled" sibling had died. I wish I had found it earlier. It is like a breath of fresh air, acknowledging that all sibling relationships_ aren't_ like some movies such as "Benny and Joon" portray it. If you think that's the "I learned so much from my disabled sister" viewpoint is the right one, don't bother finishing the review or reading the book.

One thing Dr Safer acknowledges is that _nobody_ gets off easy in this mess. If the "normal" child becomes the preferred one, he / she feels a lot of guilt and anger. If the "difficult" sibling becomes the preferred one, well, the "normal" sib feels guilt and anger. I was surprised to read that many "normal" sibs choose not to have children. I should have realized this by taking a look at my own family, but it never hit me until I read it in the book.

Dr Safer shares her own experience as well as about 60 or so other folks. Some stories seem extreme - such as the woman moving her family out of the country, until you read how the person got to this point. There is very little info on siblings who were brutalized by their disabled sibling, but the fact there was any mention at all was astounding. You never see _any_ articles in any magazine about "My sibling robbed me and beat me" or even worse fates. All it's about is "how to get your family together for the holidays" and it's about how maybe your sister dated one of your boyfriends 20 years ago. It doesn't deal with a sibling who is always drunk / high, can't be counted on to even show up for a family occasion and if she does, there _will_be some ugly moments.

I found this book extremely helpful in identifying the problem and getting some of the emotions out for the world to see. Hopefully Dr Safer (or somebody else) will do a follow up on this subject.

If you read this far, you probably _need_ to read the book. It made me feel so much better to see other people had the same sort of emotions I had regarding my sister. I hope it will for you.

5 out of 5 stars Are you the 'normal' one? Read this book........2005-12-31

At times, reading this book was so difficult I had to close it for a while. The feelings that it brought up were so intense, raw, and neglected for so long that it was difficult for me to face them. Reading this book has made me realize that in my plight I am not alone, and that there are actionable steps I can take in order to heal myself.

Some key quotations from the text that I, personally, found poignant:

      - (Healthy children) "grieve, they feel guilty, and they struggle to compensate by achieving for two."

      - "Fixing the unfixable, or saving the irredeemable, is a frequent occurrence in sibling dreams... Dreams in which a sibling no longer has the disability ... gives a brief respite that is both painful and pleasing to recollect."

      - (The 'normal' one's) "everyday trials and tribulations pale beside the catastrophe of their sibilings' predicaments, so it seems natural that they should never come first... As a result, many healthy siblings grow up with a hunger for attention that it never satisfied and that seems wrong to feel. Their needs, so consistently ignored, become invisible to themselves."

      - "The fallout from being invisible is to become self-effacing; perverse preeminence breeds perfectionism, morbid self-criticism, and fear of failure... Excelling is not an ideal; it is an emotional life preserver."

      - "... a nameless anxiety haunts them and makes everything they have seems (sic) tenuous or undeserved... compulsive self-sacfrifice driven by the belief that you do not deserve your advantages... At significant moments... it is excruciating to know how much better off you are and always will be."

As difficult as it was to read this book and grapple with all that I had so conveniently ignored for so long, recognizing the common traits of 'normal' siblings is key to becoming whole. Safer outlines those traits to be:

      - Premature maturity ("... expected to shoulder ... responsibility ... w/o complaint."
      - Survivor guilt ("Every achievement is tainted...")
      - Compulsion to achieve ("... must succeed for two...")
      - Fear of contagion ("... secret conviction that normality is tenuous or a sham.")

If you are a 'normal' one and are ready to face the issues that come with that head on, check out this book, grab a box of Kleenex, and find a quiet place to hunker down. As Safer writes, "It is no crime for your own life to come first." There is no time like the present to start living it.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful for understanding.......2005-12-13

Collecting signs and symptoms together and calling them a syndrome is helpful but why do Freudians name them after mythical/fictional characters? (Dr. Safer's name for the collection of symptoms exhibited by normal siblings growing up with a damaged or difficult sibling is the dramatic Caliban Syndrome.)

Dr. Safer seems right-on in delineating the personality traits characteristic of "intact" or higher functioning siblings: prematurely mature; driven to succeed; feeling guilty for their good fortune; fear of contagion. Dr. Safer doesn't provide any practical advice, though I would guess that her advice, as an analyst, would be to get started on analysis, asap.

The book is generally well written, though I did get bogged down in sections that were devoted to explaining the syndrome; why it was named Caliban, who Caliban was, and where it fits in modern Freudian theory. I also can't appreciate a discussion of dream analysis, but there's not a lot of that. As a previous reviewer said, there was a bit of repetition. On the other hand, it is reassuring to know that others share similar problems and have similar reactions and feelings, and it probably doesn't hurt to hear that more than once. So, my opinion is that it is a generally helpful book in providing a basis for understanding what happens to normal family members, especially siblings, when one or more members are damaged or difficult.

This book has excellent detailed drawings of the whole plant, and the bloom or seed head. The descriptions of the grasses are thorough and include fair-excellent ratings on wildlife and or cattle grazing. For a native grass enthousiast or a rancher, this book is excellent.

Many grasses have similar visual attributes, though. For the average person who has no previous knowledge of grasses and no alternate source with actual photos, this resource could be confusing by itself.

I decided to purchase this book since I liked the first Block Magic. I thought it may be too much of a duplication to the first, so I planned to give this book to my sister. Well, I just ordered another book to keep. The blocks are different and I am very pleased with color choices in the pictures. I have a hard time selecting colors for quilts and then putting the blocks into a pleasing quilt presentation. This book has more good ideas. Another wonderfull addition to my quilt book library. My sister and I are planning to trade finished blocks thru the mail, so much fun!

3 out of 5 stars I hope you like cutting out MANY tiny pieces :).......2003-10-31

Had I been able to preview this book before I bought it, I wouldn't have purchased it. I'm sure it will very much suit other people, tho - its just not to MY personal taste.

There is a wide variety of patterns included - 58 in all - mostly juvenile/cutesy. All patterns are pictured in full color (4 different pictures per pattern). 4 sizes are calculated for each block. The block directions consist of a chart outlining size/color of pieces to cut and then pictures of how the pieces assemble into a block (very few written directions). Most of the blocks require MANY pieces: Rudolph/40 pieces, apple/20 pieces, Misty the dog/32 pieces, percolator/26 pieces - just to name a few. Many of these pieces are TINY - the 6" rag doll block requires 3/4" squares!!!

At the end of the book are 10 "Quilt Maps" - a full color picture shows the project with blocks from the book, and the instructions make the block choices interchangeable, so the designs can be made MANY ways. (This was probably my favorite part of the book).

I would recommend the projects for people who have *some* sewing experience. You really would need a rotary cutter/mat/printed ruler(s) for accurate cutting of the many small pieces. Personally, I think the patterns are better suited to PAPER piecing than to piecing - and thats how I'm planning on doing them myself.

            Book Description

The Journey Through Cancer is an essential guide for all cancer patients, their families, and their loved ones. As a board-certified oncologist, with more than ten years of experience serving as physician, guide, mentor, coach, and friend to thousands of cancer patients and their families, Dr. Jeremy Geffen has learned how cancer often challenges the mind, heart, and spirit of patients and their families as deeply --- if not more deeply --- than it challenges the physical body. Yet this simple truth is often overlooked by Western medicine as it aggressively pursues the best ways to diagnose and treat cancer. Too often physicians focus almost exclusively on the physical dimensions of the disease, rather than caring for the whole person who has the disease. Dr. Geffen presents a groundbreaking seven-level program, used at his cancer center in Florida, that addresses every dimension of the person with cancer--physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual:

Education and Information, giving patients answers to questions about their disease and their treatment options.
Psychosocial Support, focusing on the need for and benefits of a strong support network.
The Body as Garden, exploring the vast array of alternative and complementary therapies.
Emotional Healing, helping patients and families deal with the often overwhelming emotional challenges of cancer.
The Nature of Mind, exploring how patients' thoughts and beliefs profoundly influence their journey.
Life Assessment, showing patients how to discover their life's deepest meaning and purpose.
The Nature of Spirit, connecting patients to the profoundly healing spiritual aspect of life we all share.
In The Journey Through Cancer, Dr. Geffen presents a revolutionary model of healing based on the best treatments available from every culture and paradigm of medicine, one that respects and explores every possible avenue and resource for healing and transformation, blending East and West, body and mind, heart and technology, science and spirit.

5 out of 5 stars a must-read for cancer patients and loved ones.......2005-12-31

When I was a happy and healthy 39 years old, I abruptly became the first cancer patient I'd known, with a stage III colorectal cancer. Once diagnosed, I put together the best medical team I could. Then I found myself with many equally crucial needs for help as I entered the strange and uniquely personal terrain of my cancer experiences. How will I get through this? What does this cancer mean for my life? Journey Through Cancer provided excellent questions, stories, and tools that helped strengthen and enrich my ability to navigate through cancer. I found Journey Through Cancer at the library, and it was the sole book I found that understood that cancer patients need more than prescriptions for treatment, diet and attitude. Journey Through Cancer coaches readers through a process of discovering their own best responses to the unique impacts of cancer on our lives. For cancer patients and their loved ones, this is a must-read book.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, compelling reading.......2003-02-19

My father is recovering from his second brain surgery in two months, and will soon begin adjuvant radiation and/or chemotherapy. I've been looking for information for him on what he can do to help the healing process from the inside. I recently checked this book out from my local library along with five others. I returned the other four, and haven't put this one down.

Brimming with inspiring stories of actual patients, facts on cancer types and treatments, overviews of alternative therapies, and many references to other books, tapes and organizations which may help you on the "journey through cancer." I know our family will be referring to this book often, throughout the journey, wherever it leads.

            5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2002-07-15

Dr. Geffen's book, A Journey through Cancer, was a revelation to me, because it showed me how MY participation in the healing process was vital to the outcome of the cancerous condition that had arisen in my body. Good as the doctors and nurses were, I soon discovered that they were most willing to treat my symptoms, that is the outer reality, but there was no inclination whatsoever to address the inner reality, that is the spiritual and emotional aspects of the patient. In most oncology centers, as far as I can see, the holistic approach is practically unknown, to all intents and purposes.

Dr. Geffen explains the basics of the disease and the treatments in very clear terms, so that we are aware of the various processes. These explanations were very helpful to me when asking questions of the doctors and nurses.

I learned from Dr.Geffen that true healing can only come from within ourselves, once we have been able to overcome our fears and denials, once we have reversed our tendencies to repress and withhold, and to view, or feel, that treatments are ordeals to be borne, instead of envisaging our whole being as coming into action in tandem with the treatments. In "The Hound of Heaven", the poet Francis Thomson says: "Fear wist not to evade as Love wist to pursue" - in order to heal, our goal should be to replace fear with love, and Dr.Geffen illustrates this in a singularly illuminating way.

One of Dr.Geffen's most compelling concepts is that of transformation: we are not at war, we are not trying to kill or destroy anything, our wish is to bring harmony throughout our bodies. There is intelligence in all our cells, and our wish is to make all of them aware of their inherent power for wellbeing and joy.

A Journey through Cancer is a masterpiece of a rare order: it is imbued with knowledge, kindness, understanding, and above all it shows that the path of healing, and eventually of being, is through consciousness.

5 out of 5 stars In Appreciation to Dr. Geffen.......2001-03-23

I have been a person with cancer since June 1998. I am one who wants answers to questions about my health all the time. Mild depression sets in when I don't get it. "The Journey through Cancer" is definitely a journey through life as Dr. Geffen states. Take one day at a time. Don't fill yourself with questions and grab for answers. His "gameplan" enables a person with cancer to deal with cancer with less anxiety and makes us more in touch with reality. How I wish there were more Dr. Geffens in this world full of cancer whose compassionate nature and an open-minded understanding about various treatments will make it easier for a patient to relate with their physician.

I highly recomend this book to any person with cancer and their families. For truly understanding what we go through physically, emotionally and spritually will make the steps through healing an easier and less stressful one. It will definitely bring about a more loving and compassionate relationship between the patient and the members of the family. Knowing about cancer isn't enough. How we accept and deal with it contribute far more to healing than all medical practices combined.

My most wonderful gift? Dr. Geffen and I communicate regularly by e-mail. I was so happy to receive a reply to my congratulatory message and through his mail, I can definitely experience his compassionate spirit. Thank you Dr. Geffen.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to Put Down.......2007-02-21

I found this book hard to put down. Malkin gives very good personal & historical background of what it was like to grow up in Israel after most of his family moved there while he was young. I say "most" since some were exterminated in the Holocaust. That background information leads you into how he ended up in the "profession" that eventually put him face to face with the coldest mass murder that mankind has ever known. I look forward to reading other books about Eichmann and about Josef Mengele, and about their final fates.

5 out of 5 stars "Why do you do these things?"-Malkin's mother.......2005-12-26

"It is hardly a secret that innumerable German scientists, formerly engaged in research for the Third Reich, played a decisive role in the rocket programs of the United States and the Soviet Union. What remains largely unknown even today is that others, including more than a few rabid and unrepentant Nazi's, were brought into the employ of the Arab states, most notably Nasser's Egypt, to fight Israel. But we knew..."-Peter Malkin's chapter "Spy"

Peter Malkin is the Israeli spy who tackled Adolph Eichmann on a street in Buenos Aires and brought him to Jerusalem to stand trial for masterminding the holocaust, the shoah, along with a handful of other Mossad agents. The term "the final solution" was his. The ideas for the trains, the camps, the ovens were Eichmann's. He is the only person who was executed in Israel by the government. Somehow, he managed to escape detection for 10 years following the Nuremberg trials. This story is about his capture but it is not about his trial; those details are lacking in this book. Peter Malkin like so many other jews and Israelis lost many family members in those war years. A sister stayed behind in Poland with her husband and little children. His family immigrated to palestine when he was a little boy.

Malkin, a real life Gabriel Allon, was a master of disguise. He played pranks on close friends and family members, pretending to be someone else totally fooling them. Thus, his mother's comment after one succesful ruse. I had not expected such humor in this tale. One learns also about life in palestine before 1948 during the British mandate when Malkin joined the outlawed Haganah. One learns about the personalities of both Malkin and Eichmann. As I read this, I couldn't help but feel such sadness for Eichmann; he really is to be pitied. How could anyone imagine such cruel treatments to so many millions of people and then carry them out and have no remorse for it? It is to the Israelis' credit that they did not torture him, harass him, play psychological tricks on him as he had done to others. The Israelis came to bring him to justice and that they simply did. To me it is sad that Eichmann came from an evangelical family; how can a christian do such things? This I, as a professed christian myself, cannot understand. He went to the same high school as Hitler, a catholic. So many details of the shoah, Eichmann's many crimes, are left out, but enough are told to understand why Eichmann was a war criminal and that he did not get away with it. How can people still say that these genocides did not happen? Talk about denial. One might succeed in killing millions of people, but you cannot succeed in removing all the evidence and witnesses to such crimes wherever in the world they occur. And it is impossible to do so in this day and age given the technology we have now. Hallelujah.

I highly recommend that at least the several movies on the Nuremberg trials be seen too. Surely such trials as these are going on right now in the world today under different circumstances of course; these trials were unprecedented and important and are models of how the international community should respond to crimes such as these.

4 out of 5 stars The Man Who Captured Eichmann.......2005-08-08

In 1960 , a small group of elite Israeli agents secretly went into Argentina to capture the world's most wanted war criminal Adolf Eichmann , and bring him to justice. Their task was to to lead a team to Argentina to capture Eichmann alive, and to take him back to Israel for trial, so that the truth could be exposed to the world and so that the world would know why a Jewish homeland must exist!
The man who actually snatched Eichmann off the streets was Peter Malkin , a young Israeli who lost his sister and nephew in the holocaust, thanks to the work of Eichmann.

What follows is fascinating account beginning with the story of two men : Malkin , and the monster who he captured , Eichmann.
I enjoyed reading about Malkin's childhood and youth-he came to Israel, from Poland , when he was four years old.
Particularly interesting is the brutality of the British , in the 'Palestine' colony , towards the Jews.
This information makes it particularly sickening to see much of the British establishment, including the British media (epitomized by the hate speech of the likes of Robert Fisk, and the BBC), politicians like George Galloway Ken Livingstone and Tom Dalyell, academics like Tom Paulin and others, leading the international campaign to vilify and harm Israel, while glorifying the terrorists that cruelly murder Jewish men , women and children.
They are showing the same callousness in regard to Jewish men, women and children being murdered today, as they did during the British Mandate.

The book outlines the exploits of the Israeli agents in Argentina, the capture of Eichmann , and the conversations between Malkin and Eichmann , which reveal the chlling mind of a killer.

The book concludes with a short chapter , asking the question if a holocaust could happen again.
There are troubling parallels between the systematic vilification of Jews before the Holocaust and the current vilification of the Jewish people and Israel. Suffice it to note the annual flood of anti-Israel resolutions at the UN; or the public opinion polls taken in Europe, which single out Israel as a danger to world peace; or the divestment campaigns being waged in the US against Israel; or the attempts to delegitimize Israel's very existence. The complicity of the Allies in WW II is mirrored by the support the PLO has been receiving from Europe, China and Russia to this very day.

If remembering Auschwitz should teach us anything, it is that we must all support Israel and the Jewish people against the vilification and the complicity we are witnessing, knowing where it inevitably leads.

As with the holocaust, the same kind of Jew-haters will again attempt to appease Arab rage with Jewish blood and land. We must stand up against it. Jews are still dying for only one reason; being a Jew.

Like a Phoenix out of the ashes of the Shoah (as the holocaust is known in Hebrew) the reborn Jewish State of Israel arose. The great hope of the Jewish Nation - the national anthem of Israel is Hatikvah - the Hope.

4 out of 5 stars I could not put it down.......2005-03-09

Malkin's book is nothing short of a masterpiece. His early life's story in and of itself is compelling beyond his accomplishments later on. I really enjoyed his telling of fighting in the hagannah and later in the '48 war against the Arab invasions.

But the capture of Eichmann is the watershed moment in 20th century Jewish history that all should hold up as the defining characteristic of the Jewish people as a whole. We will not be the whipping boys of Europe or the world anymore. We will seek out our enemies wherever they are, regardless of the circumstances, and take them to be held up before justice.

The courage Malkin and his compatriots is the story of us all.

              5 out of 5 stars Powerful book.......2005-03-08

Eichmann in My Hands is a powerful book.

The irony of the courage of Mr. Malkin is a direct opposite of the cowardice and evil of Eichmann.
