4 out of 5 stars A valuable reference for the Outside Manager.......1999-07-29

This is a concise review about the current events happening in the airline industry. Although it is written a few years ago, it still provides valuable insights into an industry that has been experiencing tremendous change. The book could have been written better. It has some rough reading moments. The book get's more interesting in the second half of the book. Most importantly, it is quite accurate for what a business manager or an investor needs to know about the airline business in a quick 200 page summary! Perfect for learning about many facets of the airline industry in a week-end.

5 out of 5 stars Great First Step.......2006-01-10

This book isn't meant to replace a visit to your family physician, but to educate and inform parents so they can make the right decision. If your child has been diagnosed with ADD, this book will help you get a better handle on the disorder, help you understand what your child is going through, and help you help your doctor properly treat your child. If you suspect your child has ADD, but aren't ready to take your child to the doctor, this is a good first-step. Get All About Attention Deficit Disorder, read it, and if you feel your child meets the criteria for ADD, contact your family physician for an appointment.

4 out of 5 stars Clear and comprehensive.......2002-02-05

Dr. Phelan uses real life examples to illustrate his didactic narrative. He explains concepts clearly and cuts quickly to the heart of important issues. I particularly enjoyed his discussion of the process getting an evaluation for AD/HD. He advocates a thorough, systematic approach to diagnosis. He explains how to make sure that the professionals have covered all of the bases.

He discusses how AD/HD can affect both adults and children. However, he tends to put more emphasis or child and adolescent issues.

Dr. Phelan does not pull punches or sugar-coat the issues. He makes it clear that AD/HD can make life challenging for individual and family. This directness is both the strength and weakness of this tape (and book.) The first couple of chapters tend to emphasize the difficulties. You have to wait a while before you get to the parts that give you some hope. The first couple of chapters might have you thinking about trading your child in for a non-defective model. But stick it out--by the end of the book you will have a clearer idea of the steps you can take to resolve difficulties.

I am pleased that this book is available in an audiocassette version. Many families affected by AD/HD are already spread too thin. They may not have the time or the attention span to sit down and read an entire book. This particular audiocassette was produced in a professional manner. Dr. Phelan reads didactic material and actors dramatize family anecdotes. This breaks up any monotony and makes for an enjoyable listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars A major contribution to ADD studies, discussions, and plans........2000-09-05

Now in a newly updated edition, Thomas Phelan's All About Attention Deficit Disorder continues to be one of the most "reader friendly" introductions and explanations for parents, teachers and care-givers of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Phelan covers symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment for ADD children and adults. Highly recommended for personal, professional, school and community library collections, All About Attention Deficit Disorder will provide information, tools, and emotional support needed by anyone dealing with a loved one, student, or patient with this difficult, biologically based, psychologically impacting disorder.

I loved 123-Magic, this was just as good with Dr. Phelan's down-to-earth style. I was concerned about meds for my ADHD child, but this tape helped me understand the benefits along with other great ideas to help my ADHD 9 year-old.

The award-winning breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu planning series has been completely revised to reflect the most recent updates in nutrition values and exchange information. What hasn't changed is that fats, calories, and exchanges are already figured for the reader--automatically.

This cookbook had some very delicious recipes, especially if you're on a special diet. However, it lacked nutritional analyses, which are very important for me, a diabetic. I returned it in hopes of getting the third edition, but I found out from the American Diabetic Association that this cookbook has been discontinued as most of its recipes are in another in the series of Month of Meals cookbooks: All-American Meals. The third edition of this series of cookbooks have nutritional analyses.

                    5 out of 5 stars It's a no-brainer!.......2001-06-22

Using this book is a no-brainer - which is what I REALLY needed. My husband was just diagnosed with Type II diabetes, and his nutritional needs are critical. We are stationed in Germany and are in the process of moving. I was disheartened when I found that the military dietician is unavailable right now. Other books were confusing - trying to figure out 30% fat calories, etc. This book saved my sanity! The spiral binding and split page design are FANTASTIC and the food is GREAT. Directions are concise and it's easy to prepare a menu and shopping list from the book. Best of all, we're getting nutritious, consistant, easy meals and snacks and half the work is done for us. Some of the books in the series even include smart choices when eating out at fast food restaurants - another bonus. When our doctor and nurses saw these books, they were AMAZED. My recomendation: get all five!

                          Book Description

There is a dreamlike quality to many of the stories in this new collection from Wayne Curtis. In Wild Apples, he returns to familiar themes of love and longing, and the push-pull emotions which inevitably accompany any attempt to break free of the ties that bind. Simple pleasures abound in these evocative stories, be it fishing on the river, gathering beans for an evening supper (are they beans or has-beens?), or listening to the jukebox at the local diner. Curtis mines the shaft of everyday experiences, turning each one into a meditation on human nature. In the title story, an afternoon drive yields fertile ground as a father and son stop to shake down a gnarled crab apple tree for the sweet-sour orbs of autumn. With a seemingly effortless style, he casts his line into the river of the past, reeling in tales of youthful folly, the Christmastime birth of a little sister, and life on the Miramichi River, which could be any river, anywhere. In one of the book's poignant moments, his beloved mother Brycie describes her early life in her own words. The hardship she endured is underscored by her straightforward style. Curtis also shares his insight into well-known friends, including novelist David Adams Richards and Yvon Durelle, the Fighting Fisherman. His contemplation of the life and work of Robert Frost casts a fresh light on the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet. Wayne Curtis displays a unique sensibility; a talent for transforming the familiar into the unfamiliar, for making the old new again in this poetic blend of fiction and biography.

                          Book Description

When American teenager Richard DiLello wandered into the Beatles' Apple building in 1968, he was immediately appointed "house hippie." He began making tea, rolling joints, and listening to dozens of demo tapes. By the time Apple crumbled a few years later he was director of public relations. Along the way he noted many of the stoned conversations he heard and the insane bits of business he witnessed: one-man bands auditioning in the reception area, Hell's Angels taking over Saville Row, and the Beatles playing on the roof. Full of period detail, with a riotously colorful cast of characters, The Longest Cocktail Party is fast-paced and funny but also manages to be immensely poignant about the demise of the Fab Four and the death of the '60s dream.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent memoir of Beatles' Apple Corps years.......2007-03-21

This is an excellent memoir of the author's times in the Beatles Apple corps press office from 1968-1970. It successfully evokes - albeit somewhat crazily - the highs and lows of the Apple corps ideals and attempts at helping impoverished artists along. Funny and sad, cleverly written, evocative of the times, with a few Beatle anecdotes thrown in for good measure. Dilello especially provides a brilliant portrait of Beatles and Apple press officer Derek Taylor, and describes as well briefly some of the other Apple execs like Neil Aspinall, Mal Evans, Peter Brown and nasty Allen Klein. Reproduces contemporary news accounts to highlight big events, and has a decent chronology at end. Wally Podrazik's preface adequately describes the purpose of the book - - to give Americans a feel of the Beatles in London during the Apple period, which Mr. Dilello does very well here. Recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Conflict of imagination.......2006-05-12

I have to wonder if this guy ever set more than a foot inside the Apple offices. The author's chronology throughout the book, which he details profusely, is a bit askew and questionable. Entertaining, but I wouldn't consider this an authentic account of the Beatles final years; highly fictional at best.

3 out of 5 stars An entertaining read, but little else.......2006-02-17

Of all the Beatles books I've ever read, this one is hands-down the oddest. Not an exhaustively checked fact fest, but more of a space cadet memoir, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Richard Dilello was the "house hippie" at the Beatles Apple offices, a position that allowed him a ringside seat for what had to be one of the most entertaining, misguided, and heartbreaking business ventures ever conceived. It has its moments, quite a few of them actually, but the whole thing is awash in a tide of sadness because we all know how things turned out in the end.

4 out of 5 stars Great insiders view.......2006-02-10

Interestingly, not a whole bunch of the Beatles in there, but a great window on their time and place. I haven't read it since it came out, but I recall it is a really FUN book as well.

The most remarkable thing about this book is how it got there at all.
It wasn't written after the event but as it happenned and was made as a sort of Diary.
Its also great to read as a third person narrative.
The author doesn't parade his own opinions about anything he just tells it as it was.
More or less in on the ground floor as Apple began

The rows of grafted fruit will never tempt me to wander amid them like these. But I now, alas, speak rather from memory than from any recent experience, such ravages have been made!

5 out of 5 stars Jack London - Part Prolific Novelist, Part Wolf.......2007-04-15

After reading "The Call of the Wild" or more precisely, after being transferred to another place and time, or even more to the point after being totally submerged into the being of this animal, I'm left completely awe-struck by London's work.

To see what Buck saw, to feel the forces and the instincts that he felt... that is the power of this book. Here's a passage from the third chaper to illustrate what I mean:

"At the mouth of the Tahkeena, one night after super, Dub (a member of the sled-dog team) turned up a snowshoe rabbit, blundered it, and missed. A hundred yards away was a camp of the Northwest Police, with fifty dogs, huskies all, who joined the chase. The rabbit sped down the river, turned off into a small creek, up the frozen bed of which it held steadily. It ran lightly on the surface of the snow, while the dogs plowed through by main strength. Buck led the pack, sixty strong, around bend after bend, but he could not gain. He lay down low to the race, whining eagerly, his splendid body flashing forward, leap by leap, in the wan white moonlight. And leap by leap, like some pale frost wraith, the snowshoe rabbit flashed on ahead.

All the stirring of old instincts which at stated periods drives men out from the sounding cities to forest and plain to kill things by chemically propelled leaden pellets, the blood lust, the joy to kill--all this was Buck's, only it was infinitely more intimate. He was ranging at the head of the pack, running the wild thing down, the living meat, to kill with his own teeth and wash his muzzle to the eyes in warm blood.

There is an ecstasy that marks the summit of life, and beyond which life cannot rise. And such is the paradox of living, this ecstasy comes when one is most alive, and it comes as a complete forgetfulness that one is alive. This ecstasy, this forgetfulness of living, comes to the artist, caught up and out of himself in a sheet of flame; it comes to the soldier, war-mad on a stricken field and refusing quarter; it came to Buck, leading the pack, sounding the old wolf-cry, straining after the food that was alive and that fled swiftly before him through the moonlight. He was sounding the deeps of his nature, and of the parts of his nature that were deeper than he, going back into the womb of Time. He as mastered by the sheer surging of life, the tidal wave of being, the perfect joy of each separate muscle, joint, and sinew in that it was everything that was not death, that it was aglow and rampant, expressing itself in movement, flying exultantly under the stars and over the face of dead matter that did not move."

4 out of 5 stars The call of the wild .......2007-01-18

The call of the wild, by Jack London is a great book for all ages. Buck (the main character) is a tame dog in Santa Clara California living with Judge Miller, a man that everyone new and enjoyed. This changed when a rush for gold in Yukon made men need strong dogs to pull their sleds. Buck was a very strong dog and as a result, was kidnapped. He was then taken to Yukon where there was harsh snow and was very cold. He was treated poorly until he met John Thorton. John Thorton was very kind to Buck but then one day he died. Buck was left in the wild and became friends with a wild animal. I personally like it because it is always telling you what is happining in great detail. Jack London also got right to the point making it easy to understand.

The book The Call of the Wild is an excellent book. It is about a dog named Buck, who had to struggle while turning from a tame dog to a wild dog. He ran into cruel people, but a man named John Thorton saved his life. Buck and Thorton were devoted to each other until Thorton was killed. Buck then had to live by himself in the wild. I enjoyed this book because of the interesting plot and descriptive phrases. I would recommend this book to other fourth and fifth graders because it is marvelous.

Rahel Varnhagen (1777-1833) lived during the crucial period of assimilation in Germany, when it seemed imperative for Jews to escape their Jewishness.

                                            Intertwining Identities

Hannah Arendt's Rachel Varnhagen: The Life of a Jewess is the biography of Varnhagen that simultaneously attempts to define Rahel Varnhagen's gender and national identity as a resident in early 19th century Germany in Varnhagen's own terms, while Arendt refines her political theory. Rachel Varnhagen is portrayed throughout the book as a complex character; a Jewish woman in a German society at the dawn and immediate following years of the Napoleonic Revolution. Arendt is an accomplished political-philosopher who despised being called a philosopher. Arendt's rise to academic prominence came when she wrote Eichmann in Jerusalem; Eichmann was where she coined the phrase "banality of evil" in reference to the famous trial of the Nazi Adolph Eichmann. Arendt was on assignment in Jerusalem for the Eichmann trial as a reporter for Harper's because she could not attain a university teaching position. Arendt had not successfully completed the monograph that was to be her Ph.D. dissertation. During the National Socialist ascension to power in 1933 Arendt was forced into exile, therefore hindering the completion of the biography of Varnhagen and her doctoral dissertation.

Arendt studied under Karl Jaspers and Martin Heidegger the later of which she had an affair. She is most known in political philosophy circles for her study of totalitarian regimes in Origins of Totalitarianism. Arendt collected the published and unpublished letters of the famous salon, bourgeoisie-oriented Varnhagen to map Varnhagen's identity through the inner voice she reveals in her letters. Through reading the letters it is evident that Varnhagen is practically apolitical, but she struggles with her German-Jewish identity and her life as a woman. Arendt explores the complexities of this dynamic through attempting to slip into Varnhagen and convey to the reader Varnhagen's existence. While in the process of amalgamating the various stories of Varnhagen, Arendt also devises her political theory.

Varhagen was at the center of an aristocratic salon where literature and culture were often discussed and she was viewed as a Jewish exception to anti-Semitism. It was believed at the beginning of the nineteenth century that all anti-Semites had their exceptional Jew, and for the many attendees of Varnhagen's salon it was Rahel. In adding her political theory into the construction of Varnhagen's biography Arendt spares Varnhagen no sympathy, often thinking that these very exceptions furthered the anti-Semitic cause.

In essence what Arendt has done is constructed a philosophical-psychological biography delving into the subject's mind, breaking the barrier between subject and observer by using the letters as a background to reconstruct the thoughts of Varnhagen. Varnhagen wrote her letters as a narrative, waiting and watching for life to unfold, unwilling to participate in introspection. Fearing that contemplation of the past might lead to her rejecting her identity and denial of her self-asserted uniqueness.

Varnhagen befriended many of the most prominent novelists and poets; her salon suggested a milieu of sophistication. However, Varnhagen's letters allowed Arendt intense introspection on the feeling of being a Jew in a largely anti-Semitic culture and being a woman in a misogynist culture. Arendt's political theory is never more evident then when she wears the skin of Varnhagen and talks about the Jewish question. Arendt believes that the common Jew attempted to escape their Jewishness (Varnhagen was baptized) only to allow other Jews to flounder in their Jewishness; each individual sought to break from the community at the cost of leaving the others to be victims of virulent anti-Semitism. Arendt is at her sharpest when she philosophizes on the impact of the Napoleonic Revolution on Jews, "it would be incomparably more difficult to escape from a reformed Judaism than from orthodox Judaism; that association for the assimilation of the Jews could lead ultimately to nothing but the preservation of Judaism in a form more suited to the times (179)."

In the preface to the book Arendt says, "It was never my intention to write a book about Rahel; about her personality, which might lend itself to various interpretations according to the psychological standards and categories that the author introduces from outside; nor about her position in Romanticism and the effect of the Goethe culture in Berlin, of which she was actually the originator; nor about the significance of her salon for the social history of the period; nor about her ideas and her "weltanschauung," in so far as these can be constructed from her letters. What interests me solely was to narrate the story of Rahel's life as she herself might have told it. (81)

Rahel believed she let life happen to her and simply observed and recorded her situations. She was, "letting life rain upon her." She was an prophetic individual that simply aspired to convey what happened to her as destiny. But in this role as intermediary recorder of the past she observed and her unknown, but unconscionable future destiny she thought she was an exception; one that must succumb to destiny, but not attempt to influence it. An individual that was so shortsighted that she failed to consider the fact that the destiny that awaited her, the history that was being revealed and shaped her life was less important than her own life. She was romanticized by contemplation of the past and its unraveling into the future of which she only thought she was a part. Varnhagen was a paradox; waiting like everyone else for history and life to happen but yet she continued to assert her uniqueness. Varnhagen attempts to solve the paradox by waiting for history to unveil, but not discover who she was-only what she could be. In the physical world Varnhagen could not deny her Jewishness, but she aspired to be malleable, devoid of shape and identity, traveling on the waves of history as they splashed on the shores of her continuously unfolding destiny. Arendt best summarizes Varnhagen by saying, "she wished to stand outside reality, to merely take pleasure in the real, to provide the soil for the history and the destinies of many people without having any ground of her own to stand on (145)."
