              Book Description

This volume is an autobiography of Michael Dewar, eminent developer of the semi-empirical method of theoretical/computational chemistry. The personality and charm of this bold, brilliant and frequently brash scientist is vividly demonstrated in his stories, ranging from his early discovery of the structure of colchicine by analysis of literature data to his application of theoretical chemistry to numerous questions of chemical structure and reactivity. Dewar describes his childhood in India, his studies in Oxford in the 1940's, and his subsequent Professorships in England and at the University of Chicago and the University of Texas.

It's true: it explains what many MDs neglect to mention in the office. Very useful reading -- BEFORE you go in to talk to the doctor. This will give you a framework for the best questions to ask. Unfortunately, the burden is on you, the patient, to ask them! Most docs volunteer nothing! Counterintuitive, I know, but it's the reality. Arm yourself with this simple, smart, easy to understand book.

I learned more about acid reflux in two days of easy reading then I learned from my doctors in five years. Great Book!

Until now, no one had outlined the consequences of untreated heartburn as clearly as this author who pretty much tells you everything you need to know about about how heartburn happens and how it affects your body. I particularly liked how this book made it possble for me to contact a consumer help book and find out how stress hurts my stomach.

This book is a straightforward guide to heartburn and its unpleasant sister, reflux. The list of potentially offending foods is very useful, as is the Part of Tens guide to heartburn web sites. Even if I still get heartburn, this book has given me some strategies for reducing the discomfort. Highly recommended.

              5 out of 5 stars Good Eating.......2006-02-28

This book is a guide to cooking Indonesian food in the American kitchen. It begins with a brief introduction to culinary traditions in Indonesia and general cooking techniques, followed by some discussions of spices and coconut. The remainder of the book consists of recipes, organized by type of food. The chapters include: rice, satay (barbecue), soups and noodles, chicken, beef, fish, vegetables, fritters, garnishes and chips, eggs, sauces and dips, and sweets. At the end of the book are some menu suggestions for a rijsttafel (buffet), traditional herbal remedies, a glossary of ingredients, and an index. There are no photographs and very few illustrations.

While the recipes include a sampling from all the major islands (Java, Sumatra, Bali, Borneo, Sulawesi, and Madura), the focus is on Java, Sumatra, and Bali. Many of the recipes include a brief introduction explaining the cultural significance or context of the recipe. Marks has included recipes for many well-known dishes, such as nasi goreng (fried rice), satay (barbecue), rendang (coconut stewed beef), soto ayam (chicken soup), gado-gado (salad with many ingredients), and rujak (green mango salad). On the whole, the directions are clear and many of the recipes can be prepared without a lot of fuss. Marks frequently includes useful notes about which recipes can be made in advance and which freeze well. He also describes which spices are essential to a recipe, and which can be substituted without a great loss in flavor. The chapter on vegetables is titled "Vegetables for the Vegetarian," but this is a bit of a stretch, since recipes in this chapter frequently call for shrimp paste, shrimp, and one even uses ground beef.

5 out of 5 stars A good basics book on typical Indonesian cooking........2005-02-27

I have quite a few Indonesian cookbooks to supplement what I've learned from my mom. This book covers all the basics that you might not find in other Indonesian cookbooks. By this I mean the staples that you might be able to order in a restaurant to supplement fancier dishes or would likely make yourself at home if you were living in Indonesia (e.g. lontong, rempeyek kacang, sambal bajak). While Marks and Soeharjo cover regional variations, they include them side-by-side in the book rather than grouped by region--very helpful for anyone just getting started in Indonesian cooking. I also love the short section on "Spices as Medicinal Remedies"--something almost always considered in Indonesia when deciding what dishes to prepare. You'll be able to make good use of this book if you love to cook Indonesian food.

5 out of 5 stars Healthy, Flavorful, Easy.......1999-05-13

I was first introduced to Indonesian food at a wonderful Rijstaffel (rice table) restaurant in Utrecht, The Netherlands, in 1994. Once I returned to the States, I lost touch with this cuisine. Fortunately, I recently found The Indonesian Kitchen. The recipes are clearly written and easy to follow. The ingredients needed are relatively easy to find if you have any Asian groceries in your area (and since we have a few here in western Montana, you should be able to find them just about anywhere). My family loves the dishes I've prepared from this book, and it will get used often! Spice up your life and try the recipes in this book. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE BOOK FOR INDONESIAN COOKING........1998-07-27

As a "meat-n-potatoes" American woman married to an Indonesian man, I have been looking for a good Indonesian cookbook for 15 years. THIS IS IT. Most other Indonesian cookbooks are written in Dutch or suffer from metric measurements. Recipes from other multi-Asian cookbooks have resulted in bland semi-chinese food. But this book results in authentic Indonesian cooking. All dishes have both English and Indonesian names so I can cook my husband recipes from his childhood. Everything I have tried has turned out delicious. Also the menu planning tips for "rice tables" or banquets help with meal planning. Spices and common ingredients are listed in Indonesian, Latin botanical, English, and Chinese or Indian if applicable.

The history, price range, manufacturer background accompanied by a photograph of each piece of furniture allows both first-time collectors and experienced connoisseurs to identify and appraise American antique tables, chairs, sofas and beds whether they have been found in the basement, at a garage sale, consignment shop or flea market.

From Shaker to Mission to mid-century Modern, these antiques from the seventeenth century to the 1950s -- 347 in all -- are described by an in-depth text. An index, upholstery guide and list of public collections help readers evaluate antiques like pros.

                      Book Description

This book features a fascinating collection of some of the most innovative tables, chairs and lights ever designed; those that push the boundaries of imagination, art, and design.

This is a must for any designer interested in not only beautiful and often innovative design, but how such furniture is constructed. Taking 50 of each of these objects (tables, chairs, and lights), this book follows the furniture maker from original brief through to finished object, and features the work of some of the most highly talented and accomplished designers in the world. It is visually stunning, with photographs and diagrams to illustrate the design and construction processes, whilst particular attention is paid to the materials employed.

A veritable tome, this book will become essential to all designers' reference libraries. This new value-for-money and re-sized paperback edition brings the book within reach of all design students who will value it.

There are tons of furniture books out there but this one is different from the norm. Not only does this book show images of the final product but it also has illustrations of how the furniture was built, the process of development and material call outs. This allows the reader to gain a much deeper understanding of the furnitures. I highly recommend this book.

The plans are described and drawn well. The style tends to lean more towards country or crafts, but the designs are well done. You could easily change the wood from pine to cherry, maple, oak or mahogany and get a different look. The important thing is that the furniture in this book is designed well.

                                        Book Description

The story of elegant Bostonians has been told many times, notably by John Marquand in The Late George Apley and Cleveland Amory in The Proper Bostonians. Now D. Roger Howlett writes about Boston Brahmin painter Gertrude Beals Bourne (1868-1962). Lavishly illustrated with color reproductions of her beautiful Impressionist watercolors of still life, seascapes, and paintings of flowers and gardens, the book chronicles the artist's life, times, and artistic style.

Born on Beacon Hill, Bourne grew up in the Back Bay and New York and began her career as a painter in the 1890s. In 1904 she married the architect Frank A. Bourne, and the couple moved to 130 Mount Vernon Street-known as "Sunflower Castle." Frank helped to found the Beacon Hill Association, Gertrude founded the Beacon Hill Garden Club, and the couple is credited with re-gentrifying Beacon Hill in the first two decades of the twentieth century. Among their friends were artists Laura Coombs Hills, Maurice Prendergast, his brother Charles Prendergast, and landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. After Frank A. Bourne died in 1936, Gertrude continued to paint and exhibit until shortly before her death in 1962. Her work was shown at such venues as the Boston Art Club, the New York Watercolor Club, the American Watercolor Society, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the National Gallery of Art.

This long-overdue portrait of a significant American Impressionist painter will appeal to art historians and collectors, as well as those interested in Boston history.

Boston Brahmin Gertrude Beals Bourne was born on Beacon Hill in 1868 and began her career as a painter in the 1890s. In 1904 she married the architect Frank A. Bourne, where she founded the Beacon Hill Garden Club and counted among her friends artists, architects, and all the leading members of the local gentry. Gertrude continued to paint and exhibit her work in such venues as the Boston art Club, the New York Water Color Club, the American Water Color Society, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the National Galley of Art right up to her death in 1962. Compiled by D. Roger Howlett (President of Childs Gallery) and with an informative introduction by Patricia Hills (Professor of Art History, Boston University), Gertrude Beals Bourne: Artist In Brahmin Boston is the long needed summation of Gertrude's life and work which is strongly recommended as an essential, core addition to any personal or academic American Art History reference collection.

Triumph of Hope From Theresienstadt and Auschwitz to Israel Now available in English, here is the award-winning and internationally acclaimed testament of a Jewish woman who was taken to Auschwitz while several months pregnant, where she was forced to confront perhaps the most agonizing choice ever imposed upon any woman, upon any human being … so that both she and her newborn infant should not die in a Nazi "medical" experiment personally conducted by the infamous Dr. Josef Mengele. And just as vividly, Ruth Elias recounts the aftermath of her imprisonment, and the difficult path to a new life in a new land: Israel, where new challenges, new obstacles awaited. "One of the most powerful memoirs provided to us by a survivor." —Indiana Jewish Post and Opinion "Well-written … not only provides a remarkably honest picture of the unspeakable reality of living in ghettos and slave-labor and death camps, but also what it meant to be Jewish in Europe… in the 1920s and 1930s.… This is one of the best Holocaust memoirs I have read." —Washington Jewish Week "The understated tone of this memoir adds to the author's powerful re-creation of her life as a young Czechoslovak Jewish woman during the Holocaust." —Publishers Weekly

                                        5 out of 5 stars "Hope" Personified.......2007-02-04

I read Holocaust memoirs because of my need to learn more of what my people went through during this time of hell on earth. How hard it must be to write down and re-live this part of one's life. After reading many such memoirs, Ruth Elias's story was extremely powerful to me, in that she is a woman (like me), married (like me) and a mother (like me). She survived through the most horrific and unspeakable horror that can befall a human being. How many of us could survive under these conditions, and yet continue to live, really live, and experience more of the good in other people and in life? She was capable of literally starting over and telling others about her experience. What a wonderful, strong and intelligent woman she is! Don't miss this one. I'm going to make it a permanent part of my book collection.

5 out of 5 stars What an amazing triumph!.......2006-06-20

This memoir goes to show that, despite what some people might say, it really is true that no two Shoah memoirs and experiences are exactly alike. Rutinko Huppner (now Ruth Elias) grew up in a rather wealthy family in the former Czechoslovakia, and after her young mother divorced her father when she was 6 years old, Rutinko and her older sister Edith were raised by a single father, with help from their uncle Hugo (their father's brother) and his wife Irma, along with a whole slew of grandparents and other aunts and uncles. Later on their father remarried, though Ruth and her sister, teenagers by then, really resented their stepmother and tried everything they could to make her life miserable. Being wealthy, Rutinko and Edith had access to things that their friends, neighbors, and classmates could only dream about, such as sausage for school lunch, a car, being driven to and from school, vacations in the mountains, musical instruments and music lessons, and a lot of other great stuff. They even had the money and connections to get permission and papers to leave Czechoslovakia for England after the Nazi takeover in 1939, though she and her sister decided not to go through with it due to their father's ill health and wanting the family to stay together through this difficult time.

The family were able to go into hiding in a few different cities, where they enjoyed a relatively secure and happy life. Ruth and Edith even found the time to have romances and to be active in a secret Jewish youth group. However, there was eventually a raid on the area, and Ruth, Edith, their father and stepmother, and their aunt Irma were taken away to Theresienstadt (Terezin). Their uncle Hugo wasn't taken because he was very sick in the hospital and dying of cancer. Once in the large ghetto, they found themselves separated from their father, since men and women were quartered separately. However, shortly before they arrived, Ruth's boyfriend Koni and his own family had been deported, and this relationship ended up saving her life, since if Koni hadn't married her while she was sick in the hospital, she would have been deported along with the rest of her family when they were. From this point on out Ruth was along but for the friends she made, and she and Koni weren't even able to properly live together as husband and wife for some time. However, even in the ghetto love blossomed, and eventually Ruth discovered she was pregnant. After doing absolutely everything to try to find a doctor who would give her an abortion, she ended up being deported when she was two months pregnant, and was one of the few women who survived in that condition instead of being murdered on arrival. A lot of circumstances came together to save her life and to keep her alive even in spite of her condition, many of them decisions she had only a split second to make if she wanted to live. Eventually she had to make the most difficult and heartrending decision of all when her baby was born, so that the infamous "Dr." Mengele wouldn't kill them both.

Once she was no longer pregnant, Ruth was viewed as a healthy fit young worker, and was transferred, along with her friend Berta, who had also been pregnant, to Taucha, a subcamp of Buchenwald. In this camp, they were put into a special privileged work detail, which accounted for their eventual survival. After being liberated, their group of Czechs made their way home and found that, in the overwhelming majority of cases, their loved ones just were not coming home and that they'd had to start over again from scratch. I was surprised to learn that many young people like Ruth and her boyfriend Kurt just lived together after the war instead of getting married, since they had to wait two years before their missing spouses could legally be considered dead, even though everyone knew what had most likely befallen them. Ruth also had to make the difficult decision to divorce her husband, who had survived as well, because they'd just grown apart and she felt he hadn't acted very appropriately towards her when they were in the Family Camp at Auschwitz. A few relatives came back, but no one from her immediate family. It was with this new family of two that she left Czechoslovakia for Israel shortly after independence was declared, and just in the nick of time, before the Czech borders became closed.

Mrs. Elias went through some of the worst things imaginable (a number of times she even writes about how hard it was to just almost matter-of-factly type such heavy words like "None survived" or "They were probably all gassed"), and yet she came through everything alive and determined to start again, to make a new life for herself in her own homeland, to make sure that no one ever looked down on her or abused her ever again. It just goes to show that the human spirit is an amazing thing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Haunting.......2006-02-03

I have read dozens of Holocaust memoirs, and although they are always touching and intense, none have caused me to feel such grief for the author as this one. I literally had to stop reading and bawl my eyes out for a good 10 minutes. This woman endured so much, and with such grace, that you cannot help but be invested in her story. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars well written and inspiring.......2004-09-22

This book never lags and never loses your interest. It is very well written. It is an inspiring and insightful account of a woman's courage and determination to survive the Holocaust. I only wish the book continued because I wanted more. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A book that everyone should read........2004-08-05

I finished reading Triumph of Hope this morning, after starting it two days ago. I simply couldn't put it down. The author, Ruth Elias, is nothing less than extraordinary. The way that she expresses her memories, through her style of writing and description, helps us to get one step closer to understanding an experience, which we can never really comprehend, because we were not there. Mrs Elias's life is remarkable, and through reading her book I thoroughly believe that she is a genuinely lovely, kind and warm person. It is such a tragedy that the Jewish people of her generation went through turmoil and absolute hell. But through this book, Ruth's aims - to spread the message that the discrimination and racism they experienced should never be repeated - are being achieved when a single person reads her book. Her message is being spread over the world, and I am glad that i was able to read Triumph of Hope. I intend to share this book with my family and friends, so that they can read of such an incredible woman, and a generation of people who refused to give in. I sincerely recomend this book to anyone who is thinking of buying this, for themselves or for others.
