Book Description
This important collection reveals as never before the quality, extent, and variety of the Italian American contribution to American literature. Bringing together fiction and poetry as well as academic essays and newspaper articles from the 1800s to the present, this volume covers a wide field of cultural experience. Including many previously unpublished pieces as well as classic works, and enhanced by an insightful and entertaining introduction by Regina Barreca, Don't Tell Mama highlights both the unity and the diversity of the Italian American experience.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding!.......2006-08-27
If you enjoy stories about Italian American's you won't be able to put down Gina Barreca's anthology. A notably missing work is a recent book that probably would have been represented had it been around in 2002 - Amatore Mille's ELEVEN DAYS IN AUGUST - a heartwarming memoir about a Wall Street sales executive who "vacations" from his NY job each year to rejoin his Italian family in their Italian sausage sandwich business at the Wisconsin State Fair - a must-read for lover's of Barreca's book!
Another Gina Barreca hit!.......2003-05-25
Once again Gina Barreca wows the reader with a wonderful book by a talented author who does beautiful anthologies as well. She finds the reality, the humor and the depth in any situation. Those who love her writing should check out "They Used to call me snow white, but I drifted" "The Penguin Book of Women's Humor" "Too Much of a Good Thing is Wonderful" and the Washington Post Magazine where once a month she and Gene Weingarten do a column together. They are publishing a book together in 2003 that will also be great.
Recipe.......2003-03-19
Into a medium sized book add: a little under one hundred Italian American writers spanning an almost equal number of years, a liberal amount of humor and irony, chopped up tragedy, mixed with redemption, olive oil (of course!), and finally one terrific editor (Gina Barreca). One need not stir liberally as the contents tend to mix and mingle well on their own. What do you get?
The most complex and multifaceted Italian American anthology that anybody has ever cooked up. Bravo!

What to say-and what not to say-when a friend or family member has an eating disorder.
When a friend or family member shows signs of an eating disorder, the first impulse is to charge in, give advice, and fix what is wrong. But these tactics-however well-intentioned-can backfire.
This compassionate guide offers ways to tackle the tough topics of body image, media messages, physical touch, diets, and exercise-along with a special section on talking about these issues with children. It includes information about when to get professional help, how to handle emergencies, and answers to difficult questions such as "Am I too fat?" or "Is this ok to eat?"

Customer Reviews:
Not Impressed.......2007-09-16
I'm disappointed with this book. I was looking for something with quick man-pleasing recipes using common ingredients. These recipes require too much prep, and often use odd stuff like dry wine and pearl onions. Just the thought of trying to find some of these ingredients at my grocery store deters me from trying any of the recipes.
The Slow Cooker book I was looking for.......2005-11-21
I wanted a basic but diverse slow cooker book, with kid friendly recipes. I also wanted real ingredients, not just "add two cans of soup" recipes. That weeded out almost all the cookbooks on the bookstore shelf. Best Loved had a good range of recipes, including versions of things I already make (like pea soup, or marinara sauce), so I took it home, and I'm glad I did.
These recipes vary from basic family fare to more complex flavors, and so far all of the recipes I've tried have gone over well. I can't wait to try the hot fudge cake!
Also great if you need to lose a few pounds..........2004-03-19
Watching your weight and what you're eating can be a full time occupation but I don't have a personal chef at home to do it for me. THIS BOOK IS REALLY EXCELLENT. It has a lot of tasty recipes and although this book is not intended as a weight loss diet, it has recipes that are pretty healthy! I especially like the soup recipes, they really look pretty healthy, there are a bunch that utilize lots of veggies and different spices. A lot of the recipes don't say anything about butter or margarine but the food turns out quite flavorful. By reading through the recipes, you can assemble a nice collection of spices that will really flavor up a lot of your meals. It just takes practice.
Since a crockpot can yield quite a bit, depending on your family size you could have plenty of leftovers. You can freeze some of it and have it a week or two later for some variety.
The other thing I really liked about this book is that it has a nice sturdy hardcover you can wipe off, the pages are thick and glossy, the photographs are very inviting and there are lots of them. There is one recipe per page with nice large clear letters so the text doesn't look so tiny and voluminous to appear like the dish takes a lot of effort. Overall, a really nice book!
A great first book of slow cooker recipes........2002-12-30
There are lots of different recipes in here. But the best thing is that they aren't all "add a can of cream of whatever soup." There are a few of those, too, but these are actual recipes that anyone can make. You throw everything together and a few hours later, you have dinner!
Some of the recipes include pictures; most don't. One thing that's a little surprising is the variety of recipes. There are dinner recipes, of course, but there are also appetizers and hot beverages, sides, and desserts. (Fruit and Nut Baked Apples! Yum!)
If you're not already a slow cooker convert, what are you waiting for?? This is not just for people who work all day, this is for anyone who has errands to run, and doesn't want to rush dinner at the last minute. With this cookbook, you will find something to please everyone in your family, from elaborate (spareribs simmered in orange sauce) to simple (macaroni and cheese).
Lots of Choices.......2000-11-14
This cookbook is filled with lots of great recipes of many kinds. I have found more useful and very tasty recipes in this book than any of the other slow cooker cookbooks I have. It is well-organized and the directions are very clear. I highly recommend it for someone who has just gotten or is getting a slow cooker. Is a great source of new ideas for someone who already has a slow cooker.

Book Description
An internationally known expert and Harvard Medical School professor offers an up-to-date guide for treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
Six million Americans suffer from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and they know firsthand the often devastating effects it has on their lives. Some symptoms, such as the nagging feeling you have left the stovetop burner on, can be mildly distracting. Yet others, like compulsive hand washing, the inability to throw anything out, or nerve-racking feelings of guilt, can be completely paralyzing and make it nearly impossible for sufferers to lead healthy lives. Dr. Baer gives readers the tools to assess their own symptoms, set goals, and create therapeutic programs for themselves. He also helps readers differentiate between OCD and other psychological illnesses such as depression. From the latest treatments to important facts on the medications currently available and how they work, Getting Control is thorough, concise, and positive--a lifesaver for anyone whose well-being is affected by OCD.
Customer Reviews:
more helpful for some than for others.......2005-08-21
This is a very good book for people suffering from compulsions--actual physical rituals such as handwashing, for example--but is less helpful for people suffering from "pure obsessions"--that is, ruminations without overt compulsions. A number of recent books address "pure obsessions" much better than this one.
this book wasn't right for me........2002-06-15
I was looking for a step by step process, but this book isn't written that way. If you're looking for a step by step process..this isn't it. One thing I don't like about this book is that it's more like stories of the authors patients and also the author keep saying I will talk about something in chapter so and so, I talked about it in chapter so and so....sign of a bad self help book.
Good Purchase!.......2002-04-04
I was extremely pleased with the easy to read and follow instructions in this book. I was able to follow the program quickly and easily. I would definately recommend.
A wonderful and amazing book.......2001-02-06
This book -- and a similar one by Joseph Ciarrochi called "The Doubting Disease" -- helped turn my life around when I was deep under with OCD. Now I am so much better, and I am forever grateful. If you have OCD then don't waste your life not reading this book.
The Book that will make your OCD symptoms go away.......2000-09-12
After reading this book,I practiced some of the anti-OCD methods described in this book, and was quite successful. Baer pulls no punches in this compelling examination of OCD,it's pain, and the methods used in recovering from it. As with Jeffrey Schwartz's Brain Lock, and Judith Rapoport's The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Washing,it's filled with other Ocd sufferers' experiences,so you won't feel isolated from the rest of the world. The book isn't that long,so you can be on the road to recovery in a few days.

Book Description
After growing up as a fully assimilated Jew, Paul Cowan embarked in his mid-thirties upon a journey to discover and appreciate his true identity and heritage. This "orphan in history" relates his search for these roots, detailing the path he took from his Park Avenue home to nineteenth-century Lithuania to a contemporary Israeli kibbutz, leading to remarkable personal discoveries that will move everyone who has yearned to know more about their past.
An Orphan in History is a classically beautiful, inspiring story of how one man evolved from describing himself as "an American Jew" to "an American and a Jew."
This story will inspire you to journey in search of your true self.
