      Book Description

In this revolutionary work -- a landmark that signals the true beginning of feminist medicine -- a doctor, a philosopher, and a scientist prove that by postponing marriage and motherhood, women have accelerated the aging process, resulting in earlier menopause and, ultimately for thousands, earlier death. In Sex, Lies, and Menopause, T.S. Wiley, Julie Taguchi, M.D., and Bent Formby, Ph.D., turn thirty years of medical and cultural wisdom on its head, challenging both

the medical establishment and modern feminists who believe women can delay childbearing that menopause, a natural state of female maturity, does not have to lead to potentially deadly medical conditions.

Sex, Lies, and Menopause offers strong evidence that the use of synthetic hormones leads to cancer and advises women to turn to natural hormone replacement therapy -- derived from plants, not drugs -- to help them elevate their estrogen level for greater energy, libido, and intellectual capacity. A groundbreaking effort of creative insight and astute research, this book fearlessly tackles one of the greatest health crises facing American women today.

Provocative, empowering, and scientifically sound, Sex, Lies, and Menopause addresses the inherent benefits of natural progesterone, reveals the lies advanced by the medical and drug establishments, and challenges women to demand a medical future where their health comes first. The research presented here will at last allow women to create their own plan of action by safely putting themselves on the path to better health and hormonal balance at any stage of life.

      1 out of 5 stars Poorly done.......2005-10-17

While purporting to expose "the shocking truth about hormone replacement therapy," Sex, Lies, and Menopause is poorly written, even incoherent at times, and only adds to the confusion about HRT. The book is poorly researched, hard to read and contains glaring inaccuracies. In short, I found this book a real disappointment, especially during such a trying time in a woman's life.

      5 out of 5 stars Menopause...do your research!!!!!.......2005-07-22

Ladies....how many of your friends have been diagnosed with cancer...how many of your daughters take birth control pills...female cancer is an deadly epidemic and this book will tell you why it has happened and what to do.
Ms Wiley has written a great book on the overview of the BIG LIE that American medicine has (and still is) telling women.Any Dr who suggests synthetic hormones has NO CLUE and you need to RUN out of his/her office. Each woman has a different menopausal experience and if yours is not good then read Wiley's book and Dr Uzzi Reiss's book "Natural Hormone Balance for Women".
I had read over 20 books and knew I needed help, but had difficulty finding a Dr who was more interested in fixing my health than endangering it with HRT. If you want to find a Dr who can really help and prescribe just for your needs, contact the Women's International Pharmacy...go to Google and type it in...they are GREAT...they will send a list of physicians in your state who work with women to re-establish health and balance...women who have no problems with menopause have had low estrogen levels all their lives, so the loss is not as great and the symptoms are minimal.
Do yourself a favor....if you KNOW you are not yourself and are tired of feeling all the odd things menopause brings...take control of your health..find a proper Dr., do saliva tests, hair analysis, and blood tests and find out what is causing your problems! It is not an easy fix, but you will find out what your body needs to feel good again and not endanger your life...you can greatly improve the quality of your life and possibly save your daughters from real danger as they age as well. GOOD LUCK!

4 out of 5 stars No Lies. Good Info.......2005-07-03

Great book that helped me go for bioidentical hormones. I've now been on them six months and plan to say on them as I feel young and sexy. Before reading this I knew that the horse-derived pharmaceuticals were a problem. Wiley also let me know that diet changes using soy aren't the answer. I'd give this book 5 stars except for the weird chapter titles. Couldn't figure out what they meant. But otherwise the book is clear and makes its point well.

      5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-06-24

Regardless of what your prior knowledge might have been on the subject of menopause, you will find this book extremely informative. It is a must read. Forget what you think you know about natural hormones - such as what can be bought online or at health food stores. This book goes beyond the courageous Dr. John Lee's books.
Most of what we know about hormones comes from the scientific and medical professions. But so much of the research is either based on incomplete or faulty information. Many conclusions and recomendations for treatment are based on this lack of information. In recent years we have all been on a roller coaster - one day hormones are on, and we must take more, the next day they cause cancer and need to be suppressed. It's enough to make your hair fall out! The Woman's Health Initiative has done some research that has again caused many to jump to conclusions. From those conclusions there have been some scary extrapolations. Most of the research on hormones was not done using bioidentical hormones. That means most of the hormones used were a synthesis of mare's urine. (Yes pregnant horse urine is what you are taking if you are using traditional synthetic hormones.)

In a nutshell this book asserts that hormones should be applied using not only natural bioidentical hormones, but applied in the exact way and amount that they are made in the body of a young, healthy reproductive woman.
The book also illustrates the connections between hormones and heart attacks cancer. Synthetic hormones probably cause cancer but the lack of hormones may cause heart attacks. Though there are other books on bioidentical hormones, such as Suzanne Somers new book "The Sexy Years", I do not know of one that advises their application in this manner or goes this far.
You may have many ideas about hormones and aging or you may have no information. This book tells you why no information on this subject can be deadly. There are so many implications involved in this kind of hormone replacement therapy; issues pertaining to our youth-crazed culture, sexuality, religion, spirituality and the authority of the medical and pharmaceutical professions. This book addresses all of them.

Susan Wiley has put together all of the relevant research on hormones and her honest look at the scientific and medical community is sobering. Yet she manages to maintain her sense of humor, which you will feel as you turn the pages. This is a brave book and all of the people involved should be applauded for putting their proffesional necks on the line. If you are in your twenties, if you are approaching menopause or past menopause, or if you have had a partial or full hysterectomy' or yep even if you are a man, this book is for you.

In the interedst of full disclosure
I am repeating this review from my website http://www.marlasapothecary.com
Since putting the review up on my site I found a homone specialist who was also excited about this book. I have now been on this protocol for a year. I feel great, I look great (At least I think so) , I would recommend it to anyone and I do.

2 out of 5 stars Read "Natural Hormone Balance for Women" instead..........2005-01-30

My CNP told me to read this book (Sex, Lies and Menopause), and said we'd use its schedule (it's in an appendix at the end) for bioidentical HRT. It's a good place to start, but be careful about following it specifically without monitoring yourself. Dr. Uzzi Reiss's book, Natural Hormone Balance for Women, gives clear information about various hormones, and the symptoms of deficiency and oversupply, something that is completely omitted by Wiley et al.

I hope the authors' science is better than their history, sociology, and editing. I've found numerous instances where they contradict themselves and are flat wrong when they're describing women's social history.

I don't like the gimmicky old rock-n-roll song titles for their sections; it makes it hard to find information on a particular topic, and is a sneaky way of making you wade through their ranting to find the information you want.

And I really don't appreciate their assertions that their book is "about biology, not politics", when their explanations of our biology can't even be separated from their speculations and commentary on women's social history and the politics of women's place in society. The whole "Lies" section is more about politics than about biology! They assume that all doctors are either ignorant or in drug companies' pockets and will oppose you if you ask for their help in using bioidentical hormones, so you will just have to force them to do what you want, armed with the information and directions in their book. They make snide comments about the women's movement and feminists. And their recurring rant about drug companies and profits from drugs (and I'm no fan of drug companies!) make it sound like natural hormone therapy is free, which it is not!

To use another reviewer's phrase, it's hard to sieve the "pearls" out of the "muck". Hint: the most useful information is in chapter 10, "Satisfaction".

They do have some interesting ideas, and some things do make sense. But I know too many healthy, vigorous old ladies who didn't do any kind of HRT to completely accept their assertion that cancer is the inevitable result of menopause.

I'm afraid that if they are sloppy about their history and sociology (not to mention plain old word usage - e.g, effect/affect, choose/chose) they're also sloppy about their science.

Natural Hormone Balance for Women has much clearer information about biology - the effects of various hormones- and how to use bioidentical hormones, with none of the political claptrap Wiley and company offer.

A wonderful resource for anyone considering ( or actually living )on the water. Lin and Larry share all the tiny bits and pieces of their daily routine that let you feel as if you were living with them. Although it was not written as a how-to, it contains lots of simple recipes and creative insights into the daily management of the ship's provisions and crew I promise you that this is a book that you will keep in your reference library and read again and again.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-06-20

Another Great book from the Pardeys.

Could barley put it down long enough to write this review. If your thinking about cruising in a boat, this book is essential to food stores and preperation as well as crew comforts.

Fantastic first hand advise and ideas from cruisers of 40 years.

      Read it !!

5 out of 5 stars Right On Target!.......2006-06-15

"Larry came below shivering and blue-lipped. I got him out of his wet clothes, warmed some freshwater so he could wipe down, and got out his dry clothes. But it wasn't until he had had some hot, solid food that he started to warm up and stop shivering" (p. 357); the real situations experienced during extended cruising and appropriate responses are the focus of this comprehensive book which contains relevant advice on nearly every cruising situation imaginable, with a strong emphasis on how those situations impact the crew.

The authors are professional sailors and have been full-time cruising sailors for over forty years. Their vast experience and precise writing skill enable them to expertly address a wide range of topics, and the book clearly demonstrates their mastery of the care and feeding of sailing crew.

The book is divided into 52 chapters and two indices. Each chapter presents a logged day of a sailing cruise, noting weather and sailing conditions, and covers items which are appropriate to that particular stage of an extended cruise. The concepts are emphasized with enjoyable anecdotes which illustrate the importance of preparation and adaptability. Topics include nearly everything imaginable, ranging from menu planning and food purchase and storage, through cooking methods and preservation techniques, to fishing and keeping the crew well-clothed. The authors' cruising experience ensures the hints are appropriate across a variety of weather and climate conditions. For example, rough-weather food preparation is contrasted with calm-weather cooking using limited galley facilities. The text dispenses with theory and focuses on the reality of small-craft living.

The tone of the book is personal and engaging; the coverage of the topic is masterful and authoritative. Now in its revised 3rd edition, the book is superbly edited and particularly well-balanced. The writing style is accessible and inviting and the material reads like a long letter from a personal friend--albeit a well-spoken friend with indisputably good advice and an incredibly interesting suite of daily experiences. Not only does the book instruct and encourage, it positively portrays cruising and draws the reader into the author's world.

Part adventure book, part how-to guide, part personal history, and part cookbook, the text is fun, creative, and sure to please. Regardless of the reader's level of sailing experience, the book has much to offer and ensures that the care and feeding of sailing crew will not only be possible, but an enjoyable component of future cruising.

      5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised!!!.......2003-12-05

A couple of months ago, I attended a seminar taught by Lin & Larry called Confident Cruising. What a treat to meet this inspiring couple! I have offshore dreams myself and since I know I will be in charge of my own galley, I bought The Care & Feeding of Sailing Crew. I thought it would have a few recipes and hints on how to store food. Little did I know that the book is so much more: You travel with Lin & Larry on a 45 day passage from Japan to Canada and during the passage, Lin teaches you everything you need to know about provisioning, food care & storage, galley layout, cabin care - the list goes on and on. I haven't finished the book yet - I'm with them on day 30. They are eating mostly canned food now but Lin is still preparing great meals! I love Lin's style of writing - you really feel like she's talking to you over a cup of tea.

      BUY THIS BOOK! IT'S FANTASTIC!

I love the way Lin Pardey just says it like it is. This is not a book full of check lists of ingredients, this is the one book that will prepare you for the experience of:

      Shopping in foreign marketplaces
-how to avoid buying cat instead of rabbit
-what to buy first and why
-what foods lasts and what don't fair so well
-where you will find better (and sufficient) provisions and where you will not
-why you should stock up on toilet paper

Dealing with the ups and downs of daily cruising life including:
-how to calm the fish that is thrashing on your deck
-why you should cook as soon as you see a storm coming
-when you're likely to feel tired
-galley tips for making the cooking experience more enjoyable

She also includes a few recipes along the way, and to top it all off, it's a great read! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Imagine Thomas Edison as a cat--in your home. What havoc would that incredibly creative, intensely practical intelligence wreak upon his environment, always trying out new ideas, striving to better his last effort?

Edison used his mind for profit. My cat, Joie--French for "joy"--uses his for fun. Both are recognized as innovators in their fields, demonstrating the power of creative thinking and persistence to achieve original, truly impressive, results.

A collection of "Joie Stories," The Himalayan Laundry Basket relates Joie's adventures as a kitten in such diverse environments as closets, recycling piles, and the vet clinic, and then progresses through five years of unbelievably creative mayhem. We watch him tear wallpaper off walls, swing on hanging lamps and pictures, and surf flattened cardboard boxes across conveniently smooth floors. The household's other cats also provide opportunities for fun, especially "Grampa Adanac," Nobel Peace Prize nominee (almost).

On the cover is Joie beside his rendition of the Himalayan peaks, sideways--even the laundry basket isn't safe when he's around!

The Himalayan Laundry Basket is for cat lovers of all ages to enjoy, and will also appeal to anyone with a slightly wacky sense of humor, on the prowl for a good laugh.

As a beginner blacksmith with a professional engineering background I bought previously Alexander G Weygers: "The Complete Modern Blacksmith" largely because it had many "excellent" reviews. However, Blandford wins on most points. I have found Blandford very helpful on specific details, on leading me through principles and methods, with much clearer illustations properly referenced in the text, and with a wider scope of nedded information. In contrast Blandford has much better information on welding, and detail on forges and on aprons and is far better indexed. I have learned a lot from both books, but if I had to choose one it would be Blandford.

          4 out of 5 stars General Introduction...Worth Owning.......2000-01-14

Percy Blandford writes on a lot of shop craft topics and has clearly thought about them a lot. He writes well. This is a general introduction to metalwork primarily from a smithing perspective...that is, carbon steel work. It touches on other areas but really isn't suitable to the beginning welder, sheetmetal worker, or tool and die hobbiest. It would be best for the person who wants to make historic replica items from a forge who one who wishes to supplement historical replica woodworking with some basic metal work in brass or iron/steel.

An expert guide to the joys and challenges of parenting young children-from the renowned Eliot-Pearson Department that has helped children grow and learn for seventy-five years.

The Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development at Tufts University has always applied its resources to helping parents bring up happy, healthy children. Now the faculty offers a wealth of information and advice. It addresses questions such as:

€ Why is my three-year-old suddenly bossing her playmates around?
€ Should I worry when my son seems almost hypnotized by the TV?
€ How do I avoid unintentionally "labeling" my kids?
€ Will moving to a new house be too much for my child to handle right now?

Eliot-Pearson proposes that both child and parent are learners as they grow together. With this comprehensive book, you can look forward to more growth-and fewer growing pains.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, up-to-date information, covers topics that parents need.......2006-01-04

A great book that covers relationships with your child along with child development basics. Clearly written and based on years of experience and data.

It covers a great range of topics, including ones often left out of general parenting books, like issues of physical contact among preschoolers (what's appropriate, what's not) or friendships.

They have great suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter for parents who want to delve deeper into any one topic. It's easy to choose the chapters you are most interested in and read those first.

It's become one of the books I recommend to people, which is rare for me. I have read a lot of child development and parenting books and this is one of the best.

                5 out of 5 stars A New Favorite.......2003-11-05

This book has easily become one of my absolute favorite parenting books. That is saying a lot, as child development is my passion, and I have read nearly everything! This is much more than just a parenting book. It is a valuable resource for parents to learn more about their children's development, and how to grow together as families.

The authors do not water down the content, as many other "fluff" parenting books do. It is packed with valuable information and suggestions about how to parent your particular child. I appreciate how the book made me evaluate my parenting style and expectations versus my children's personalities. My son, in particular, has a personality that sometimes makes me cringe, because it is so different from my own at times. This book really makes you think!

The format is not exactly easy to just scan, pick, and choose. It is straight forward, with many little narratives and examples of various family issues and ways they can be handled. Many of the more complex issues are covered, too, such as "spirited" children, overly anxious kids, family conflicts, parent/child personality clashes, etc.

If you are seeking to improve communication with your children and become a more effective parent, I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars His hand is everywhere........2000-05-31

Nineteenth-Century America had its Henry Clay. His European counterpart was Georges-Eugene Haussmann. Emperor Napoleon hired Haussmann to make method out of the madness of post-Medieval Paris. Haussmann is principally responsible for the City of Light as we know it. "Today," the Baron's recent biographer stresses, "his hand is everywhere." Part of Haussmann's effort consisted of bringing pure water to Parisians. In the process he wiped out the cholera that was endemic to the City. Throughout life he modernized the ailing French infrastructure. Wherever he was posted, he brought in roads, canals, and rail lines. How odd it was that in a country so obsessed with pagentry and glory, Haussmann's funeral went by in a small church, virtually unnoticed.

5 out of 5 stars A superbly written and illustrated biography........2000-04-04

This illustrated biography of Georges-Eugene Haussmann is a highly recommended pick for any who relish accounts of early Paris: The Man Who Made Paris Paris examines the life of an administrator who rebuilt Paris as a capitol "worthy of an empire". Vintage black and white photos of early Paris accompany a biographical coverage of the man who transformed the city in only seventeen years.

5 out of 5 stars very instructive book.......2000-03-31

This book helped me understand how really Paris was before Haussman did his work. I recommend this book to any person who is interested in Paris and it's history

                    Book Description

Tulsa, Oklahoma, ìthe oil capital of the world,î has a long and varied history. Evidence of a possible Norse presence dates to 1000 AD. An ancient people known as the Mound Builders populated the area, then disappeared just prior to the arrival of Spanish conquistadors in the 1540s. Osage Indians, as well as other members of the Five Tribes, called this part of Oklahoma home. French trappers made a brief appearance. Finally, outlaws like ìPretty Boyî Floyd and ìMachine Gunî Kelly cooled their heels in Tulsa while running from the law in the 1930s. ÝÝWhat Tulsa is really known for, however, is oil. The discovery of oil fields in Tulsa at the turn of the century caused an economic and social revolution. The formerly small town became a center of power, and fortunes worth millions of dollars were gained and lost. J. Paul Getty got his start in Tulsa along with his father, who was one of the first to ride Tulsaís tsunami-like oil wave. The town boomed through the 20s and 30s, and oil money built the town of Tulsa into the city it is today. Tulsa currently hosts a population of 380,000 people, and, in honor of its oil legacy, is home to one of the most prominent petroleum schools in the world. ÝÝ

                    Book Description

Reflecting Conrad's genius for narrative that focuses on the quest for inner truths, The Arrow of Gold is an exploration of the dangerous appetites of men and of human vulnerability, as well as a profound meditation on the emotional boundary between people. Boasting a cast of extraordinary and eccentric personalities, including the heroine Doña Rita, this is a story of adventure on the high seas, of the revelation of love, of the crushing weight of loss, and of freedom found in the recklessness of unadorned sincerity.

During the Carlist war of the early 1870s, a young sailor, the unnamed protagonist, joins the champions of Don Carlos de Bourbon, pretender to the throne of Spain. The Carlists use the eager youth's intense attraction to the sea to persuade him to run perilous enterprises for their cause, ventures he later learns have been financed by the beautiful mistress and heiress of a rich man's fortune. When he falls in love with her, he finds himself moved absolutely by this discovery, despite the fact that she is unable to return his love fully. In the end he is left alone with his first love, the sea, his brief time with the mysterious Doña Rita marking a tumultuous awakening to a life of passion, the desolation that hides in its shadow, and the possibility of rebirth in its wake.

Although not as well known as his earlier novels Lord Jim and Nostromo, The Arrow of Gold was critically acclaimed when it first appeared in 1919 and is still considered to be among the best of Conrad's later works.

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Back in print at last!.......2006-02-13

As popular with the critics as Conrad is, they tend to ignore this novel. It has been out of print for many years; I know -- I've searched and searched for it, to no avail. This would seem to be, as far as I can tell, the only Conrad work to ever go out of print, which leaves me mystified.

The story is semi-autobiographical, as almost all of Conrad's work is, but this story focuses on his youth, in France, and a swashbuckling affair of gun running, a rival sailor and of course, the object of highest, most earnest desire, THE WOMAN. Conrad idolized and despised women, book after book after book, never reconciling his love/hate passions. The Arrow Of Gold is more sympathetic to the idea of romantic love, but certainly not a primer for marriage.

If you like The Secret Sharer and Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim and Nostromo, the Arrow Of Gold will surprise you. This is Conrad of a different order, still near to the sea, but not of it, not a living part of it. If you are familiar with Almayer's Folly and An Outcast of the Islands, this tale will be more familiar to you.

I reccomend it wholeheartedly, without any reservations. As with any Conrad piece patience is the order of the day. He does not dazzle you with his first pitch, rather he beguiles y0u, pitch by pitch, until you're swinging at exactly what he wants you to swing at,and nothing else.

                      Book Description

Masha, a young Russian girl, is terribly afraid of the czar, whose piercing eyes glare at her from the portrait Masha's parents must keep on the wall. In the last decade of the nineteenth century, the czar's harsh anti-Semitic laws forbid Masha, who is Jewish, from going to school-something the bright, inquisitive girl desperately wishes to do. When her family immigrates to America, Masha not only achieves the long-desired education, but also gains success as a poet, and a love for her new country that will last all her life.

In a picture book inspired by Mary Antin's classic immigrant memoir The Promised Land, Rosemary Wells brings renewed vigor and freshness to a story of the fundamental American experience. 5 out of 5 stars A wonderful story about overcoming hardship.......2005-09-04

This book has a special meaning for me and my family. Both my husband's and my ancestors were Jews who left Russia after enduring centuries of discrimination and danger. As our children get older and time creates more distance between us and what our ancestors suffered, I find myself seeking out these stories so that they can appreciate just how privileged a life we lead now.

This is the perfect story to make that point. Without any hint of adult indignation or politics, the author tells the story from the point of view of the young girl who has to watch as her brother's nose is measured to see if he can go to school (he can't); who knows that her parents have to stay and work in one section of town because they are Jewish but does not understand why; who is desperate to learn and escape from an illiterate destiny as a shopkeeper; and who listens in childhood terror to a man broken as a boy by the czar's soldiers, for the sole "crime" of being Jewish.

The book is also honest about the Masha's/Mary's believable childhood desires. At one point, she encounters a wealthy non-Jewish Russian. When asked what she wants, she thinks to herself that she wishes she could have her hair and shoes. Adults would probably be too proud to admit to such things, but a child would not- and thinking those things under those circumstances doesn't make her any less Jewish or at all ashamed of such.

The most touching parts of the story are the interactions with her beloved father and her less seen but equally devoted mother. Though forbidden by Russian law to go to school, her father takes her deep into the woods to read the five books they own. Later, when her father leaves for the United States to make a better life for them, her mother works to secure the best life she can for her children. The most heartbreaking moment in the book comes when Masha, her mother and brother finally leave Russia; in doing so, they also say goodbye to her older sister, whom Masha will never see again.

The streets of America are not, of course, paved with gold, and Masha lives in a hot tenement near drunks and dope addicts. However, she remains studious and ambitious, taking shelter in school and in her parents' support. By the end of the story, she has mastered her new language well enough to have a poem published in the Boston Globe.

This is a wonderful story that, although set in the past, can resonate with younger readers, because although it is not 1894, there are still plenty of hardships both natural and man-made that people must overcome.

                        Book Description

An essential collection of stories and poems for young people that introduces U.S. Latino Literature

"There seemed to be no way out of the custom. Her arguments were always the same and always turned into pleas... `But, Amá, it's embarrassing. I'm too old for that. I'm an adult,'" Naomi says in Helena María Viramontes' story "Growing." Ever since Naomi hit high school and puberty, she noticed "There were too many expectations, and no one instructed her on how to fulfill them..." In her tradition-bound family and under the thundering brow of her father, Naomi struggles to stretch the limitations imposed by her family, even as her flesh stretches in her changing body.

Like "Growing," the pieces in this anthology for young adults bear the twists and pulls of youth: the struggles of discovering a new self and the trials of leaving behind an old one. This beautiful collection gathers a wealth of pieces well chosen for young adults: stories and poems that are studded with the challenges of negotiating identity and learning to love the bodies and worlds in which young adults find themselves.

Edited by well-known poet and prose writer Judith Ortiz Cofer, the collection includes work by some of the leading writers for young adults like Pat Mora and Nicholasa Mohr, by such celebrated writers as Tomás Rivera, Virgil Suárez, Jesús Salvador Treviño, Lorna Dee Cervantes and Viramontes, as well as some new voices that will become a part of the literary canon of the twenty-first century. For many students across the U.S., this text will serve as the first introduction into these diverse writers and U.S. Hispanic literature.

                          Book Description

During the economic depression of the 1890s and the speculative frenzy of the following decade, Wall Street, high finance, and market crises assumed unprecedented visibility in the United States. Fiction writers published scores of novels in the period that explored this new cultural phenomenon. In Panic!, David A. Zimmerman studies how American novelists and their readers imagined--and in one case, incited--market crashes and financial panics.

Panic! examines how Americans' attitudes toward securities markets, popular investment, and financial catastrophe were entangled with their conceptions of gender, class, crowds, corporations, and history. Zimmerman investigates how writers turned to mob psychology, psychic investigations, and conspiracy discourse to understand not only how financial markets worked, but also how mass acts of financial reading, including novel reading, could trigger economic disaster and cultural chaos. In addition, Zimmerman shows how, by concentrating on markets in crisis, novelists were able to explore the limits of fiction's aesthetic, economic, and ethical capacities. With readings of canonical as well as lesser-known novelists, Zimmerman provides an original and wide-ranging analysis of the relation between fiction and financial modernity.

                            5 out of 5 stars A book by a legendary entrepreneur.......2005-03-23

Every street is paved with gold, by Kim Woo-Choong, is a book
that will appeal to young executives. Kim Woo-Choong, is a self-made billionaire. Kim made his fortune by starting his
company Daewoo and by working day and night at exporting a variety of goods to the world market from 1967 to 1997.

When the Asian financial crisis hit, Daewoo and many other Korean firms where in deep trouble. At the time, Daewoo was in the middle of a massive global expansion funded by heavily borrowing funds on the world's financial markets.

As the crisis deepened, the company struggled to repay its creditors. During the time, Kim took steps to save his company by diverting Daewoo funds and securing illegal loans. Kim is currently a fugitive and in hiding. ( But it is my view that the Korean government at the time, is just as guilty as Kim for the inept way it handled the financial crisis ).

It is Kim Woo Chung's life story ( Daewoo ) and that of Chung Ju Yung ( Hyundai ) which is actually inspiring - the achievements of their companies ( via Korea's labor force ) within a 30 year period.

This book is filled with short-stories about how a business person should conduct him/herself in the world; what their business outlook, vision and attitude towards opportunity should be. Kim writes about the importance of dreams, visions, optimism and prompt business decisions to entrepreneurs. He gives many examples of how risk taking, hard work,
effective time management and the nurturing of skills can transform a business. Kim also stresses leadership characteristics and that hard work is as important as profits.

I found certain sections of the book very inspiring. Kim has a forceful way of expressing his ideas in many inspiring quotes. Many of his short stories, contain profound and thought provoking business tips.

1 out of 5 stars The Enron of Korea..........2004-10-18

Kim, like most Korean cheabols, built their companies from scratch thru dirt-cheap government loans and a protectionist environment that shielded their companies from competition at the expense of the consumer. After the bankruptcy of Daewoo dutrng the Asian Financial crisis, Kim has already fled his native country and is now living under a French passport since Korea doesn't have any extradition powers over France to get him. Kim is now a infamous and a shame to all Korean people and every business person would do well to learn from his mistakes.

1 out of 5 stars Every Street Is Paved With Gold : The Road to Real Success.......2001-03-21

This book's credibility is suspect, to say the least. The author's company is now insolvent (as of March 2001) and he has gone into hiding after allegations of embezzlement.

                            1 out of 5 stars What a jerk.......2000-11-10

This Kim Woojoong character is one of the biggest jerks in Korea. His street was paved with gold, sure. And he pocketed billions of US dollars for his own personal use, most of it borrowed against his heavily leveraged companies. He is probably single-handedly responsible for Korea's current economic woes. His companies are all bankrupt--financially and morally. And he got off free of charge, not hving to give up a single dime of his own money to save the thousands of employees who are now out on their ears, despite all their hard work. This book is an embarrassment.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the most inspiring book!.......1998-09-09

I liked this book because it changed the way I looked at life, in general and the way I live in particular. Although this book does not seem like a typical 'how to' book, it does more than that by example. The author's exemplary life style, extremely hard working, simple and modest puts the average complaining person to shame. After reading this book I personally have changed. The author's ideas about thrift, attitude towards your work, hard work and simple living are contagious. It is difficult not to imbibe these values after reading this book. It is a 'must read' for every one including and specially youngsters.
