Book Description
The fighter pilots-their aircraft and aerial battles fighting for France These two books are brought together in a single volume by Leonaur for the first time. They concern the lives, adventures, dogfights-and sometimes violent deaths-in the skies over the battlefields of the Western Front of young Americans who found common cause with France at a time when their own nation remained neutral. Their squadron was originally entitled the Escadrille Americain, but it became the internationally renowned Lafayette Escadrille and subsequently became part of the infant American Air Force. The first book, Flying for France is the account of one of the earliest groups of Americans who rallied to the tricolour. Drawn from among soldiers of fortune and the ranks of the Foreign Legion they flew the Spads and Nieuports bearing the Indian Chief head insignia which became the hallmark of their skill and daring. The second title Our Pilots in the Air is a is an account written as 'faction' by a serving officer and published shortly after the war. Nevertheless, it has the ring of historical authenticity whilst retaining its entertainment value.

Thomas Lancaster, Hope helps you see how science and Scripture brilliantly intertwine. Promoting neither legalism nor vegetarianism, Holy Cow! gently challenges followers of Jesus to take a fresh look at how they live out their faith and what Christian obedience looks like.

Clean or Unclean?.......2007-08-30
After years of hearing that Christians are under the "New Covenant" and that "Old Testament stuff does not apply" to us, I was stunned to realize that it may apply more than we think. Just the fact that scientifically it can be shown that the unclean meat really is not good for us and the Torah gave this information 1000's of years ago caused me to really question what I had been taught. Gee...maybe God really does know what is best for us ;)
The irony that the church, as a whole, is griping at people for having an occasional glass of wine, but tells them to eat that ham for Easter is classic. It is very eye opening to research and see WHY ham is eaten for Easter ;)
I appreciated that this book was not overly graphic about the unclean meats. I have seen some that made me ill with the graphic detail about the unclean meats.
The author does a great job of showing her point, but allowing the Holy Spirit to convict. She guides without condemning. She uses sound hermeneutics to show Scripturally why this is valid.
As for me, after my research, I no longer eat the unclean meat. I am also looking at what else the Torah says that the church has told us to ignore because it is supposedly no longer valid.
Just call me the semi-kosher pro-Torah gal =)
Holy Cow, God DOES care........2007-03-14
This book was informative and gives the reader a chance to decide for themselves what is approved food. I believe if more people knew what God's instructions regarding "approved" food for his "chosen" people, there would be much less sickness and disease in America today.
I don't know why as a Christian I was brought up thinking ham was a perfectly acceptable Easter dinner. The scientific reasons that pork and shellfish should not be consumed should be reason enough to make it a forbidden food for Jews and Christians alike. I gave up Biblicly unclean foods about a year and a half ago and feel 20 years younger!
A Fantastic Treatment of a Deserving Topic.......2007-01-05
Traditional Christian doctrine tells us that God gave dietary laws to Israel, but then abolished those laws when our Messiah came. There are quite a few New Testament scriptures to back up this view, to be sure -- I used to rely on them heavily myself to defend my non-kosher diet! I became suspicious that something was amiss when I came across Isaiah 65:4, where God expresses his disgust with the practice of eating the flesh of pigs and other unclean meat, in the same chapter as giving prophecies that have yet to be fulfilled about the new heavens and new earth. It doesn't make much sense to tie these two things together if the dietary laws have been abolished in the past. After a lot of reading, thinking, and praying, I came to the conclusion that my traditional viewpoint was wrong.
I probably could have saved myself the trouble of further research if I had read this book first. Hope Egan combines discussions of food-related scriptures with some basic scientific principles to show why we were simply designed to eat certain types of animals, but not others. She makes it clear that this is not a salvation issue, but a way to be obedient to God in one more area of our lives. I was impressed by her common-sense approach to this topic, and the fact that she is forthright without being pushy. She touches on the history of both Israel and the Church to show the proper context for New Testament scriptures, and how these scriptures came to be misinterpreted as the increasingly Gentile church lost touch with its Judaic roots. At the end of the book, there is a sizeable appendix with excerpts from Thomas Lancaster's writing, where he discusses several specific New Testament scriptures that are often used against the dietary laws. There are also helpful and specific lists of clean and unclean animals. The book focuses on the dietary laws, but in a more general sense, the authors also defend Torah observance as a whole.
If you are curious about the dietary laws, this book is an ideal source of food for thought. If you read this, I hope you do so with an open mind and a soft heart. I give it 5 stars for the excellent writing and the unique (but applicable) subject matter. Shalom!
Does God Care about What We Eat.......2006-03-09
Very interesting and informative especially as how to why some animals are unclean.
This book changed the way I eat.......2006-01-31
Like the author, I loved ribs too. The thought of giving up pork, shellfish, and other unclean animals seemed extreme. After all, God declared them okay in the New Testament, right? Well, Hope explains those passages and others in a way that made me realize that God does care about what we eat. What really got me was when Hope pointed out Genesis 7:2. God tells Noah to take SEVEN pairs of the clean animals and TWO pairs of the unclean animals. Since God told this to Noah BEFORE the Law, then Noah must have known which animals were clean and unclean. I believe that God loves us completely, and cares about every aspect of our lives, including what we eat. He has created a huge array of wonderful life-giving and sustaining foods that will allow us to live healthy lives.
I have shared this book with several friends and now need to buy more. If God is challenging you about your food choices, and you want to fulfill God's mission on this earth, I highly recommend you read Hope's book with an open mind and a soft heart. God bless!

Tasty Recipes.......2007-01-10
I had gestational diabetes and needed a cookbook that would meet my dietary needs. I bought my copy from a bookstore and loved the recipes so much I bought this one for my sister-in-law since we're trying to eat healthy together. I have continued to use it after my pregnancies and love the simplicity of the dishes. They are easy to make, tasty, and have all the nutrition facts for each recipe. I especially love the Mexican-style Turkey Soup and the Cocoa Snickerdoodles!
Really great book!.......2006-10-23
This cookbook has incredible mouth-watering photos of the food which I love in a cookbook. It has easy to make recipes that actually taste great too. I liked the variety of the food in both ethnicity and flavor. It also has a good mix of comfort food and gourmet. It covers breakfasts to dinners, slow cook to instant - its all there. Enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best books I ever read..........2004-01-30
This is a very powerful book which I think everyone should read. I could not put this book down. Usually I do not feel strong enough about books to write a review, but this book is different. Since this is a true story, the readers can really see what life was like for the main characters. This is the most amazing love story ever!!!
Captivating & Beautifully Written.......2003-07-08
Not only is this a compelling novel made even more amazing by the fact that it is a true story, but the writing and the way the author captured the story - and his characters - leaves me in awe. The author did a wonderful job of portraying a camp from the inside and included enough historical facts to educate his readers, yet not weigh it down (which would be incredibly easy and sometimes happens in novels of this genre). I've read many books about this time in history - from historical documents to autobiographies and this one is among the best in its blend of fact and "personal story". You never for a second aren't aware that these people are real and lived through this amazing challenge. It will touch you forever and you will think about this amazing couple and incredible love story for a long time to come.
A novel everyone should read.......2002-06-13
Blanka meets Mirek in Dachau after managing to survive Auscwitz. When she arrives in Dachau, she is only thinking about surviving the present and doesn't feel much of anything. Mirek befriends her and she begins to feel again-- love, hate, fear, everything.
This story of courtship that began during a time in a concentration camp is compelling and strange. This is more than just a WWII concentration camp story; it is timeless because it shows how hope might be killed due to human depravity and despair, but it can also be restored through love, family, and feelings. There is so much more I could say about this book that just can't be expressed in a review-- so I'll just say READ IT!
I couldn't put Oasis down.......2002-04-28
This book is wonderful. It is so honest in such a dishonest time of history. You find yourself rooting for the main characters with all of your passion. You get to feel like you know Mirek (Karel) and Blanka like they were family. This book is such a pleasure. I will read it again and again until my copy if so worn, that I will have to buy it again.
A Great Book.......2002-03-20
My mother, a Holocaust survivor, never talked to me about her experiences in a Nazi concentration camp. This novel gave me a vivid picture of what it was like to survive such an ordeal and the deep scars that such an event can imprint on peoples lives. I am grateful to Blanka and Mirek Friedman for making public such a personal account of their love story and more importantly to Petru Popescu for using his obvious literary talent to bring such a story to life. The novel evokes life in a concentration camp with such force that by the end of the novel I got the feeling that I have experienced life in camp Muldorf.
Many years ago I read some of Petru Popescu's Romanian novels. His English writing is as powerful as it was in Romanian. Great book, I strongly recommend it.
