For Garry Owen in Glory.......2003-11-25
An excellent account of the true Vietnam experience. I know the author and saw many of his pictures that did not appear in the book. Unfortunately, one reviewer refers to the author as a desk jockey. This individual obviously didn't read the book and is missing out on a fairly accurate recollection. There were no desks mentioned...this account is a true depiction of a soldier in the field in Vietnam. There is one vivid account of a night ambush the author participated in to stop the movement of supplies to the North. It is graphic and sad and shows the horrors and futility of war. There are many good books on the subject of Vietnam. I would rate this as one of them although I would have liked to see more expansion on the subject and more photographs. The book may lack the exageration of other books of this type but it purposely doesn't include dialogue...just the author's memories of his experience. It is grass roots, but that's what makes it special and unique.
An Airmobile Platoon Leader?.......2002-01-21
This book is about a typical desk jockey, who spent his entire tour in 'Nam trying to get out of the field. He whined whenever he didn't get his way, or had to sleep out in the bush, with his unit. WAHHH . And then, finally, he gets "wounded", when a tree fell on him! Well, he just loves wearing the big yellow patch on his right sleeve, but he far from earned it. Officers like him (are you listening Lt. Robinson!) are the reason I only spent 3 years in the Army, after joining and intending to make it a career. If I could give it no stars, or even negative stars, I would. Save your money.

Book Description
Omer Stewart is most noted for his career-long study of the Peyote religion. His mentor, A.L. Kroeber, instilled in him an abiding respect for cultural variation. Applying this fundamental principle to his work in the 1930s, Omer was surprised to find himself at odds with many notable colleagues. With characteristic self-confidence, he was undeterred in his effort to document the religion, defend its practice, and push open the door to applied anthropology.
In Cannibalism Is an Acquired Taste, Carol L. Howell weaves together taped interviews with Stewart; excerpts from his letters, notes, and papers; and recollections of family members and others. The result is a fascinating sketch not only of Omer Stewart as a person but also of his contributions to the field of anthropology and the academic and social milieu in which he participated. A must for anthropologists and anyone interested in the art of biography.
Customer Reviews:
Life story of Omer Stewart, a defender of religious freedom........1998-09-24
Omer Call Stewart was a man with many missions. He was among the first to study the use of the hallucinogen peyote in the Native American Church, and he was a stalwart defender of Native American religious freedom in many influential court cases. Omer Stewart was a student of Alfred Kroeber and produced important ethnographies of various Ute, Paiute, and other American Indians in the western U.S. He began his religious life as a Mormon and ended his life as an atheist who sincerely supported and respected people's religious commitments. He was a longtime teacher and practitioner of anthropology who embodied what it means to be a social scientist. Cannibalism is an Acquired Taste is his life's story.
Carol Howell's book on Stewart is a wonderful blend of family stories, good science, and the early history of American anthropology. Howell has compiled a series of interviews with Stewart and his family, pertinent letters from Margaret Mead, Ruth Bunzel, and other contemporaries of Stewart, and manuscripts that illustrate key points in an anthropologist's life. The book could have been a wild melange, but instead it wonderfully illustrates Stewart's many interests and wide range of involvement. This mix of views makes the book appropriate for a variety of audiences, ranging from people interested in anthropology to those simply interested in the life of one of the more interesting personalities of the twentieth century. Throughout, the blunt honesty and yet true humility of Stewart shines through.
For an anthropologist, Stewart's life is an alluring case study of how a professional comes into being. The passion and mistakes of a young anthropologist are clear in Stewart's early work with Julian Stewart and Alfred Kroeber. His journey from being a committed Mormon disciple to being a practicing scientist devoted to understanding the wide-ranging aspects of human culture is fascinating for anyone who has seen their own life change. From the 1930s to the 1970s Stewart constantly found himself in the midst of the key controversies and central areas of anthropological research. His life traces the change from Indians being non-citizens to their being active participants in national politics and issues. As an anthropologist, I can't think of a better or more fully described life of a student of culture.
For the curious lay-person, the honesty of this account of Omer Stewart's life is striking. He serves as a wonderful cursor tracing many of the changes of the twentieth century. From his travels as a Mormon missionary in the twenties to his discovery of anthropology in the thirties to his service to the Chief of Staff in the Pentagon in the forties, the first half of his life illustrates the radical shift in U.S. policy from isolation to world leader. The second half of his life cuts a course of social activism in racial integration, Indian religious freedom, and scientific debate. For Stewart, the practical consequences and rightness of an endeavor often weighed more heavily in his decisions than did anthropological theory or the opinions of his mentors. At times, we--the curious voyeurs--want to know more about issues such as Stewart's friendship with famous people such as Robert Redford--the Sundance resort is on the old Stewart ranch above Provo Canyon--but the focus on this biography is squarely on Stewart and the issues at hand, not on gossip.
I recommend the book highly to anyone who is interested in the practice of anthropology or in the active pursuit of Native American rights. Stewart was an anthropologist who did not shy away from a fight for people's rights. In this time when we often do not know what many individuals think or believe, Omer Call Stewart is a bright light illustrating how to live a life that is true to one's convictions. Carol Howell's book is a fascinating synthesis of sources that paints a picture of Stewart that is strikingly on target for those who knew him. Omer Stewart's wit was an acquired taste, but unlike cannibalism, it ultimately worked for the good of humankind.

Miniature Edition-- Be careful NO ONE notices that !!!!.......2007-03-13
This product is garbage.
If you look at the picture it says Miniature Edition.
It is NOT the same as the Full Edition of this book by the same name.
it really just went right in the garbage.
it told me NOTHING useful.....
I saw the Full Edition in a book store & that is the one you want...
Miniature edition is worthless.......2006-11-05
THIS REVIEW CONCERNS ONLY THE MINIATURE EDITION!!!!!!!
Okay it's partly my own fault for not paying closer attention to the very small picture of the cover that says "Miniature Editions" and ordering this one. However, having read the book in all of 10 minutes or so, it's USELESS. Do not buy it for any reason. Spend the extra 10 bucks for the full version. I knew more about massage before reading it. All this does is let you sound like you have half a clue standing around the watercooler.
massage for dummies.......2006-09-01
well, i guess i clicked on the uber small version. Which really isnt work it.
Nice and easy to use.......2006-08-10
I bought this book for my 12-year-old daughter, who is interested in becoming a masseuse. The book has a lot of different techniques, including reflexology, massage for babies and massage for animals. Unfortunately, our cat was not amenable to the techniques described.
She researches each body part and experiments her implemented techniques on (quite willing) family members. The photos, diagrams and explanations are at her level and she very much enjoys it.
Highly Recommended For CMT's and LMT's As Well.......2005-02-10
I spent about $10K on an excellent massage school and find myself referencing and learning new things from this book. My schools textbooks and style of teaching was very medical & stiff. I found myself talking to my clients in this manner.
Reading about massage in a language for everyone helps me to communicate better with my clients. A client that understands & feels comfortable with the conversation always comes back.

Why buy a book? A video is so much nicer........2006-01-14
I'm turned off by these dummies books. Is there ANYthing they don't have a book on. ANd I'm not a dummy. It's so much nicer to look at a DVD, especially when there's not only baby massage info, but information from a QUALIFIED therapist on baby development and natural exercises and interaction to do with your baby to make sure he is developing well. I recommend Aimee Ketchum's DVD (very inexpensive for the top quality and plethora of information in it) and WEE Exercises (also very well done).

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful photography, but..........2007-03-30
That's about all nice I can say about this book. The photography is stunning. Unfortunately, the recipes, if followed to the letter, fail to produce anything that looks like the photographs. Or anything I've ever eaten in an Indian restaurant. Or anything I would want to serve for dinner. Multiple tries have resulted in bland food that is unappealing on many levels. There's got to be a better book out there.
Gourmet Indian Cooking -- Gourgeous Color Photos & Recipes!.......2003-09-13
In the past year, I've researched dozens of Indian cookbooks and only found four worth buying because of their authenticity and deliciousness: Royal Indian Recipes (by The Ashhok Group of Hotels; perhaps now lamentably out-of-print), Camellia Panjabi's The Great Curries of India (lamentably her recipe for Kulfi is watered down, but the rest of the book is great), Amma's Cookbook (written by an Indian mother-chef, but incredibly high-brown in presentation and taste), and Chandra Padmanabhan's Dakshin: Vegetarian Cuisine from South India. The Noon Cookbook above was THE FIFTH BOOK I've ordered, even after I promised myself never to buy another Indian cookbook after the first four. As an overview of Indian cooking, it is not as ambitious as Ammas's, but it is the closest to Royal Indian Recipes in presenting the superlative best in Indian fine cooking. If you want an excellent Indian cookbook library consisting of fabulous recipies and color photos of authentic-tasting high-caliber Indian cuisine, starting with Noon's book wouldn't be bad. Incidentally, someone tried to hide Noon's book in the Professional Cooking section of the bookstore I visited. Perhaps the person who "hid it" in the professional cooking section of the food section thought only a serious professional or amateur chef deserved this book. In my opinion, everyone deserves this book. It's magnificent!

It`s a Wonderfull Book.......2001-01-07
I am just sixteen years old,but a big fish and marine life entusiast. I think this is one of the best books on tropical reef fishes ever written. When I received this book on the holidays,I was incredibly happy. Even though I recognized many of the species, there was some new and many new views of species I`d already knew. It covers all kinds of fish, from sharks to anemonfishes. And the colour of them are the most striking I`ve ever seen on animals. My favorite chapter is probably the first one, about sharks & rays. In second to it,there are the Scorpionfish and the Moray Eel chapter, although the angelfishes are the most beautifull fishes, the sharks are the coolest and most fascinating. At all,I will give it an high rate and I am a great fan of the author,Helmut Debelius, who has made many other great fish books which I also own,but this one is the best! But I would like if it was a little bit longer (a book of 450 pages would have been good)and have covered a little more about the behaviour of the fishes, and their reaction to divers, showing additional photos.

Book Description
The potato is the fourth major staple of the world and is still rapidly gaining importance, especially in the tropics. An outstanding point of this book is that both the crop ecology and the modelling of a broad range of biotic and abiotic factors are treated by the foremost scientists studying the subject today. These factors include environmental factors, such as temperature, solar radiation and carbon dioxide, as well as air and soil borne diseases and pest. The use of models in practice (decision support systems) and in science (modelling sustainability and agro-ecological zoning) is treated. Although the potato crop is used as an example, this book gives the current state of knowledge of both the crop physiology and modelling of a field grown crop and as such is of interest to any scientist dealing with field grown crops.

Book Description
Through his treatment of many men and women as a chiropractor and therapist, Dr. Clyde W. Ford discovered that the body can be the key to unlocking and opening the door to healing from physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. Dr. Ford has used touch to help his patients recover from a wide range of conditions, including chronic muscle strain, addictions, dysfunctional relationships, and abuse. In this revised edition of Compassionate Touch, new material on False Memory Syndrome (FMS) has been added. Dr. Ford discusses how reputable scientists noticed that under certain circumstances, patients recalled events that did not take place, forcing clinicians to be more cautious in diagnosing for sexual abuse treatment. Illustrated with numerous examples from this practice as well as his many workshops, Compassionate Touch also includes exercises that can be done individually or with a trusted partner.

Book Description
By any account, German-speaking Jews have made among the greatest contributions to world culture in this century--one thinks of Wittgenstein and Husserl in philosophy, Freud in psychoanalysis, Kafka in fiction, and Paul Celan in poetry. Yet most Jews were exiled from German-speaking lands (when they were not murdered there), and they have never been integrated within German culture as such.
The poet Nelly Sachs, who won the Nobel Prize in 1966 for her poetry on the Holocaust, and the critic Walter Benjamin are two such German- Jewish writers: born just over a century ago in Berlin and exiled from Germany in the 1930s, both were acclaimed after World War II (Benjamin posthumously), yet neither, to this day, is anything but an outsider to German literature. The present collection of essays addresses the uneasy relationship between Jews who are masters of the German language and the German literary tradition that still cannot accept the otherness of Jewish writers.
After a biographical and historical introduction by the volume's two editors, individual chapters are devoted to Sachs, to Benjamin, to their comparison, and to Sachs in an international context. Topics explored include the Jewish themes and motifs in Sachs's distinctive verse-dramas; the limits of poetic metaphor with respect to representations of the Holocaust; the relationship of Benjamin's theories of dramatic language to Sachs's verse- dramas; and Benjamin's theories of language, imagery, and gesture in the contexts of Western philosophy, German literature, and Jewish thought.
Before now, no work in any language has brought Sachs and Benjamin scholarship together under a single cover. Looking at these two internationally known and celebrated authors together reconfigures both the ways we understand them-- neither just "Jewish writers," nor indifferently German authors--and the ways we understand German literature.
Timothy Bahti is Associate Professor of German and Comparative Literature, University of Michigan. Marilyn Sibley Fries was Associate Professor of German and Women's Studies, University of Michigan.
